(00:01):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by American Shooting Centers Guns
Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now here's Doug Pike. I am
in here on short rest. Ilike a pitcher having to come in from
the bullpen. I entertained some clientsat last night, actually the people from
(00:24):
Golf Club of Houston and Blackhawk Golfor Country Club in the suite at minute
made and it went really well forabout ten minutes, and then we got
into the third inning and poor JPjust wasn't he whatever he had the first
(00:45):
time through the lineup, it wasgone the second time, and he absolutely
got rocked. I think four.I want to say they scored I don't
know five or six. I thinkit was six runs in the third inning
the Rangers did, and we werekind of put behind the eight ball.
They'd already scored one. Garcia hita home run in the first and Tucker
(01:11):
countered in the bottom of the first, and then to make it even last
a little bit longer, there's ajinx thing going on with timing, I
think because at the golf tournament Iplayed in on Monday with my friend Tim
Garcia from over at Federal Maintenance Services. We were moving along pretty well through
(01:33):
about six holes, and then Timjust commented, you know, for a
scramble, we're moving along pretty good. And moments later, moments later,
guess what's happening. We're all stuckand plugged up. Hold on, I've
got to push something here. That'sweird. Try that is that working?
(01:55):
Yeah? There, that's better.I wasn't getting my volume through the microphone,
but now am. Thank you,Adam. And so the tournament that
started out looking pretty good turned intoa six hour plus round of golf for
no good reason. I don't knowwhat it is, although I can tell
(02:17):
you that there were people out therewho had bought maybe three mulligans, and
I think maybe from watching them, had translated that halfway through their rounds to
three per hole. There were peopleout there who were waiting for the green
to clear on par fives, whoset shots had left them two eighty to
(02:42):
ninety out into the wind, andso there was it's just unnecessary. Just
try to remember next time you're playingin a scramble you don't really you don't
really have anything to gain. There'sno trip around the world for the winning
team, and by the way,I also another typical scramble. Note.
(03:07):
I also heard from Tim that hehad played in a recent tournament. I
think it was he who told meplayed in a recent tournament where the winning
team turned in a score of fortyeight. Oh I know where that was.
It wasn't Tim who told me that. It was Rob Logan from here
at work, a tournament he hadplayed in recently, and the winning team
(03:34):
posted a forty eight four man scramblea couple of holes where you could buy
your way into a couple of shots. But yeah, twenty four under par,
that's what they turned in with astraight face. There's got to be
a better format, and maybe wecould talk about that some other time than
on Master's weekend. I apologize forthat real quickly. Back to the Astros
(03:58):
as the game kept getting longer, and ultimately look, I look up and
it's twelve to something, and thendarned if we don't turn around and put
up a five spot. So allof a sudden, it's twelve to eight
going into the final two innings, and we just just couldn't get there.
We just couldn't get there. Therewas traffic, We're leaving so many men
(04:19):
on base. That's a problem wehave. Our pitching staff is beat up.
We're missing two or three key piecesto what the Astros are going to
need to do better, and sohopefully we'll write that ship. So anyway,
there's a lot going on outside ofour worlds of fishing and golf,
(04:44):
and I hope that you get tomake an Astros game or two. It's
really fun. And if you can'twatch them, just jump on the jump
on the radio and listen here onSports Talk seven ninety or on a lot
of occasions. The game is alsosimulcast over on KTRH. To get a
little farther out, just blow torchit out there. KTRH is a fifty
thousand watt station, and I whenpeople ask me, how big is that
(05:10):
in terms that this audience will understand. I had a good friend of mine
years ago. He's passed probably gosh, probably ten fifteen years ago by now,
I think it is. But anyway, he had deer lease down in
Mexico. Back then, this isso long ago it was safe to hunt
deer in Mexico. And he whenhe got back into Houston, he called
(05:33):
to let me know. This iswhen I was doing my show on Saturday
mornings on KTRH, and he calledto let me know that he had stopped
on a hilltop on his deer leasein Mexico to just kind of scan some
stuff that morning and sipping his coffee, and he thought, you know,
(05:55):
what the heck, I'll give ita try. And he turns on the
AM radio and the old beat upranch truck and he tunes it to seven
point forty and there I was justloud and clear, coming in signal,
just skipping down, skipping down thecontinent all the way across the border,
just skipping across like well, nevermind seven one three two one two five
(06:18):
seven ninety. Email me Doug Pikeat iHeartMedia dot com. We are gonna
talk about fishing. We are goingto talk about the masters and anything else
you guys want to bring up.We're gonna talk about private property rights a
little bit too. In a bitright now though, I'm gonna go ahead
and talk to Dave. See what'sup. Oh, I'm gonna need your
I'm gonna need your help again,Adam. Click him in poor five or
(06:41):
B we go. What's that?Dave? Hey man, I'm at one
O five and oh I'm good foryou. I know what I'm looking at
Lake Conro. I mean I'm walkingback towards it, towards the hotel.
I'm staying that and man, Itell you what the water's tom Remember,
I gotta go to my nieces withthis afternoon. So we're here, now
(07:02):
are you? Are you just thereas a spectator or are you going to
be performing? Well, you neverknow, you know, all the field
players and everybody, We'll probably allthe young kids will be inside doing what
they're gonna do. We all goout outside and do what we gotta do.
You know. Yeah, you're notgoing up there without an instrument,
(07:24):
are you. No? I gotmy guitars in the back of the truck.
Hey, But though this was alittle canal over here, I guess
this is like far the south ofLake Canro. I mean, i'd have
to look on my map again. But anyway, No, this morning,
at this chicken place over here,Uh, I was sitting out here in
(07:46):
the car early this morning. Itwas dark. I couldn't exactly see what
they were, but there was threeducks walking around. Hey. One of
them had a white ring around hisneck, so I don't know, kind
of mixed man waddling around, waddlingaround and trying to see what they got.
But then the water looks good.Man, I see, man,
(08:09):
got any time? Got any timeto fish before the wedding? Well I
didn't breathe, I know, no, really no no. But anyway,
if I just look at the water, I'm happy, you know. Yeah.
And I think my brother lives rightdown that canal I'm looking at over
here. That's why water for aproperty costs more. David's therapeutic. You
(08:31):
can just sit there and just lookat just and I think dead calm water
is that spooks me because I knowwhat it does to fishing. But just
a little bit of a ripple onthe water, or maybe a little bit
of by waves, Yeah that's whatyou want. Yeah, it's a it's
a little bit of a ripple. But hey, I've been out here in
Lake Conrode in that last round withthat one fifteen Johnson on it. I
(08:54):
mean, and it was white capping. Man. I'm telling you what.
You gotta be cool, gotta begone. What did they say, go
to the bottom dog comfort? Ohyeah, you bet no, But it
is true. You gotta be careful. You gotta be careful always be safe
all right, man. Thanks,it's beautiful out here, all right,
(09:16):
all right, thanks, I'll seeyou audios. All right. Yeah,
speaking of water safety, I wantto bring up a story I saw yesterday.
Uh yeah, for having sakes peoplewhen when you're on a boat,
especially if you go out alone, wear a PFD and and use the kill
(09:37):
switch on the boat. Late Tuesday, I saw a story about a forty
seven year old guy named Jeff Caleover North Carolina. Experienced fisherman, young,
strong dude, ran a thirty twofoot k porn big legit offshore center
console and he knew his way aroundthe water. From everything I can read,
(09:58):
I mean, this guy is onhis game. Left the ramp about
four thirty in the afternoon. He'sgonna run out and just do a quick
trip offshore. And that's the lasttime anybody saw him. The family didn't
hear when they hadn't heard from him. I think it was around ten thirty
or so. He was reported missing, and the coastguards looking, and the
(10:18):
Navy's looking, and everybody he knowsis looking at just a fleet of other
center console captains around there looking forhim. They can't find anything anywhere.
They've searched seventy seven well more thanseventy seven hundred miles square miles of ocean,
air and water, find nothing. Then I think it was I want
(10:41):
to say it might have been Tuesday. They found his boat eighty miles eighty
miles east of the North Carolina Coast, Okay, no visible damage, all
his tackles still on board. Buthe's gone. And I don't know what
happened to him. But whatever itwas, it probably just happened real quickly
(11:07):
and something knocked him out of theboat, so he slipped, he tripped
and went over the side when theboat was moving. I saw one story
that said the boat was idling whenit was found, engines still running.
I'm not sure if that's the case. I didn't see any corroboration on that.
But yeah, that's that's a problem, and there's a simple solution to
(11:31):
it. Don't don't ride around outthere like you feel like your bulletproof,
because you're not. Jeff Cale's familywill tell you that right now, they
still haven't found the guy. BestI can tell, and may never who
knows what happened to the man whoknows. Let's go get Mike on the
phone. How about that, Mike, what's up, young man? How
(11:56):
you doing? I'm doing all rightfor a guy who had to watch the
Astros lose twelve eight. Well, you sound a little fuggy this morning.
It's allergies, that's all he is. I haven't taken my medication. In
regards to the scramble that shot fortyeight, Yeah, only thing I can
say about that is there's got tobe a little sandbagging going on there,
(12:18):
so I don't even think it washandicapped. Yeah, I mean, this
was straight up forty eight they shot, And I don't care how good you
are to shoot forty eight with. And granted there's say three shots maybe four
that they were one of those someof those money holes where if your team
will donate one hundred bucks apiece ortwenty bucks apiece or fifty bucks apiece,
(12:43):
you get an automatic eagle or anautomatic birdy or whatever. So maybe they
bought four of them, but that'sstill fifty two. That's still twenty under
par. So you have to birdyevery hole, at least no pars,
certainly no bogies, and and youhave to have at least two eagles in
there. And it's just it's justbeyond the pale. It's just really disappointing.
(13:09):
And how did they did they shooteighteen or nine? I don't know.
I don't know what they did,but whatever it was, it's it
just makes you suspicious. The otherthing I called about was I understand that
TPNW is stocking some lakes with somecatfish. They do that year round.
Oh I would not wear that.Yeah. Absolutely, there's a there's a
(13:31):
simple list. It's a they callit the Neighborhood Lakes Program or something like
that, and it's easy to findonline. There's a there's a little lake
close to where I live that getsstocked I want to say every two months
something like that, every eight weekswith a pretty good number of catfish.
And what kind of catfish I know. I think they're just little channel cats
(13:54):
or something. I don't know,but nonetheless they're they're catchable, and they're
edible and make everybody happy. Forsure. That's good for the kids.
Uh. Oh, it's good forthe kids. It's good for anybody and
everybody fishing. I'm no kid anymore, but I kind of liked to fish,
you know, and I used totake kids up there with my son
(14:15):
any friend he had who never caughta fish, any kid he had,
or friend he had whose parents wantedto get them out of the house for
a little while. I'd take thosekids fishing anytime they wanted to go.
And we had a blast, absoluteblast. Oh that's cool. Yeah,
but up a good day, allright, man, you too, Thank
you. I'll see you all right. We got to take a little break
(14:35):
here, click that, click that. On the way out, I'll tell
you about Carter's country. This isthe season is a good idea right about
now to think about getting a concealedcarry permit. You're not worried about your
hunting, You're not worried about anythingelse in the shooting sports except maybe getting
that concealed carry so you can youcan feel more confident as a gun owner.
(14:58):
You don't you have to have thepermit anymore in Texas to carry,
and there are a lot of rulesand regulations. Believe me, it's not
just freewheel and do what you want. It never has been and shouldn't be.
But if you go and take thisclass, they offer it every other
weekend, alternating between Saturdays and Sunday. So if it's Saturday, this weekend,
(15:18):
then two weeks from now it'll beSunday, and two more weeks later
it'll be another Saturday. You cango to the website and figure that out.
It's easy to do. What you'llget in that classroom session is information.
You get tons of information on whereyou can and cannot shoot your guns,
where you can and cannot even carryor draw your guns under current law.
(15:39):
And that's really handy information to havein case you ever do need to
draw that thing and have to makea decision really quickly, you'll know whether
you're within your rights. And thenthe shooting proficiency test is not nearly as
as difficult as you might think.Basically, what you have to do is
hit a piece of poster board attwenty yards. That's not hard to do.
(16:02):
And if it is hard to dofor you, if you haven't shot
enough to feel confident with that, then get a couple of lessons up there
at the range at Treshwood, that'swhere they do the classes. Anyway,
you can go in there on aSaturday, get some lessons, and then
go in and take the course onSunday and be confident that you can hit
that target. And oh, bythe way, Carter's Country has anything and
everything you could possibly need as ashooter. Whether you are a hunter,
(16:25):
whether you like sporting plays, whetheryou like long range shooting, whether you
just need something for self defense. It's all there at Carter's Country and it
has been for sixty plus years.Gunsmo and hunting stuff. Carterscountry dot Com
is the website Carterscountry dot com. This is Sports Talk seven ninety on the
(16:47):
go with iHeartRadio. Friends. You'vegot to try. The conversation continues this
as the Doug Fight Show, andon this Master's weekend, I'm waiting for
some live coverage and I'm hoping thatI will get it soon from the Masters.
But it's not popping up yet. We're just getting some kind of a
(17:08):
little scroll on here. I'll checkthis during the next break. There's a
site that I was looking at onmy own little laptop. Let me see
if it's actually live yet, andthen I'll know, no, that's not
what I want. I want this, and then I'll go to something.
(17:29):
Yeah that's not gonna get it.Okay, I'll figure it out. I
know it's up here somewhere, andI will figure it out. I guarantee
you masterss Live. I'm looking forthe website. I'll figure it out.
Not a big deal. I wantto stay on the outdoors for a minute.
And specifically a case that I saw. I think it was John who
(17:52):
sent it over to me this week, and I really want to hear your
thoughts on this. There's a thestory originated in Louisiana. And by the
way, if I sound frogy,Mike or whoever it was who said that,
it's probably because somebody set the thermostatin this studio at seventy six or
(18:17):
something like that, and it's hotas blazes in here, and I'm trying
to get the heat out and alittle cooler air in. I've left the
door open. I hope I'm notoffending anybody down the hall, but something's
got to be done because I'm justI can't breathe in here. So anyway,
over in Louisiana, this guy goesdeer hunting a year ago or so
or this past season, I'm notsure when. But the bottom line is
(18:40):
he's on his own property. Hehas driven to a back part of the
property to go to his deer stand, and he comes down. He hadn't
shot anything. He's just been sittingaround watching squirrels and maybe saw a couple
of deer. I don't know.Bottom line is when he gets back where
he parked his truck, there's agame warden park there, and he said,
(19:02):
God, excuse me, what whatyou doing here? He said,
well, I just want to Iwant to first of all, I want
to take your rifle from you, because, you know, for my safety.
And the guy said, he's thinkingto himself, what about my safety.
We're just two guys out here inthe middle of nowhere, and this
guy wants to take away my rifle. I'm a little concerned about that.
(19:25):
So there was some tension between themand some questioning as to whether this guy,
the game warden should or should nothave been on his private property.
And and just stay with me,because I'm I'm really I've got some real
questions here. So the game wardensays he just wants to ask him some
(19:47):
questions, and the guy said, for what, I haven't done anything wrong.
Well, you know, I'm justI'm just here to ask you some
questions. And they end up gettingthrough that and without any incident or anything
really untoward. The bottom line isthere's something called the open Fields doctrine that
(20:14):
allows federal law enforcement. And thisgoes back to the Prohibition era one hundred
years ago. It goes back thatfar to a time when there was a
real concern that moonshining was going on. There were people had stills way back
in the woods on their property sonobody could find them and nobody could come
(20:36):
in and mess with them. Andour Congress enacted law that made it okay
for pretty much anybody at the federallevel who wears a badge to go anywhere
on your land. Now, theycan't come in your house without a warrant.
They can't even come into your yardor go into your garage without a
(20:59):
warrant or probable cause. But onyour land, the way the open Fields
Doctrine is written, they can justdo whatever they want. They can come
in there, they can hang around, they can just pretty much stay as
long as they want, watch youas long as they want, and pretty
(21:19):
much run the rules on you, rather than you having rights to just go
enjoy yourself. I understand clearly, and I do support the ability of game
wardens to do what they have todo because a lot of times if they're
going to try to make a case, they have to actually witness the infraction,
(21:45):
because what happens otherwise is you're gonnahave somebody. You're gonna have somebody
standing over a dead deer, andgame warden's gonna walk up say, did
you shoot that deer? This's notdeer season. Oh no, I heard
a shot and this deer just camerunning at me and it just fell over
dead right at my feet. Crazy, isn't it. Well, yeah,
(22:07):
it is crazy. But the gamewarden didn't actually see the infraction, and
that makes the case a little harder. To make those fish in my icebox
oh no, no, no,I guess you know, I went to
the bathroom a minute ago. Iguess maybe somebody must have put those fish
in my icebox because I didn't catchthem, and so it makes the game
wardens job tougher. But in thiscase, the thing that caught my attention
(22:33):
was that not only did that onegame warden come on the man's property and
check him, which again I don'treally have a problem with that. If
I had one thousand acres, tenthousand acres, fifty acres and I was
out there doing whatever I was doingon that property and the game warden walked
up, I'd just say, howdo you do? How do you do
(22:53):
the thing that bothered the guy inLouisiana? And why there's a bit of
a stink being made over it isthat. Just a couple of weeks later,
the man's brother was hunting an afternoonout on the same property and back
at his truck was greeted by twodifferent game wardens who pretty much put him
(23:15):
through the same thing the other wardenhad put that other man through. And
this is this is all hearsay. It's all second person and third person,
because I wasn't there certainly, soI don't know the circumstances. But it
just it caught me as as somethingthat it's a it's a law. The
(23:37):
federal enforcement people can do this, and in fact, seven states have made
it pretty clear that they put constitutionallaw ahead of all of this, and
so there even their state, andI believe federal people are just not supposed
to be on somebody's land without goodreason. But it just it just caught
(24:02):
me out, and I'm wondering whichway you guys lean on this. If
you're not doing anything, then thisis the This is the thing that a
lot of people will say well,if you're not doing anything wrong, why
do you care if they're on yourland? It's my land, and I
know I'm not doing anything wrong,But why should I have to prove I'm
innocent before they have to prove Idid something wrong. I thought we were
(24:26):
innocent until proven guilty, or atleast suspecially suspected of doing something. There's
no there's no probable cause. There'sno real reason for them to be in
there other than that they just wantedto take a look at the guy and
talk to him. So I'm nottaking either side on this, really,
I'm just kind of curious how youguys fall. But if there's a way
(24:49):
to fall because there are poachers inthe world, then I don't have a
problem with game wardens going where theyhave to go. Good Lord, if
game wardens weren't allowed go through agate and and go dig around, there'd
be a whole lot more poaching problemsin there. Are there certainly would there'd
(25:10):
be a whole lot more poaching problemsthan we have now. Seven seven ninety
Email me Doug pick at iHeartMedia dotcom. Let me talk to David.
Bring it on. There we go, Hey, David, what's up man,
Yeah, I'm gonna rack it upa little bit, Doug. I'll
find the article and send it toyou. Uh. Not only in this
happen to believe on the East coast, maybe in North Carolina. But I'll
(25:32):
find the article. Not only didthe game boarding come on to the property.
Uh he pulled the memory cards outof the landowners game cameras. Oh
wow, that's uh and with nono reason, huh. I just wanted
to see what was on wow.Yeah, okay, Yeah, well I
(25:52):
think I think I think there wassome suspicion. Yeah, okay, but
I'll I'll have to find the articleand send it to you. See that's
that's where. Yeah, yeah, please do, David. I'd like to
see that one, because that's whereif there's probable cause, you know,
if it quacks like a duck andit's got feathers and a big beak or
bill on it, it may bea duck. But there's got to be
(26:15):
some sort of a line there. And I'm not sure exactly where it's drawing.
I'm really not We're gonna find out, though. We're gonna find the
article. Please, thank you,David. I appreciate it. Man,
all right, let me let megrab John real quick, Adam before I
go to break that'll make it clean. Hey John, what's up man?
What do you think? Well,I'm going then sent you to the article.
And what what I wanted to bringup was, I believe in Texas
(26:38):
the game wardens are allowed to comeon the property. All I have to
do is think that you might behunting. And well, I'd like every
poacher to be hung from a pieceof barbed wire like they do snakes to
make it rain. You know, that's a slippery slope. And what the
article hinted at was the guy feltlike you were calling the article. He
(27:02):
shot it in Louisiana. It's aone buck per day state, right,
he shot a buck in the morningand registered online, which they can he
did. Okay, so he suspected, Oh, they're ought to get me
now because I hunted this morning. They know I shot a buck, and
they're going to try to catch meshooting another illegally. So he thinks because
(27:23):
he gave them a hard time, that they're gonna they're gonna fix his wagon,
so to speak. And that andthat's sort of the slippery slope as
you get, uh, fear oflaw enforcement with a vendetta, and that's
a that's a that's a bad mix, right, Yeah, that would be
a bad mix anywhere that that wereto happen. Because if it's my land
(27:45):
and I shoot a deer in themorning on a a buck a day area
or even a deer a day area, right, there's no nothing says I
can't go hog hunting that afternoon. And and that's where that's where it's going
to be up to the game wardensinterpretation too. Well, I thought he
was deer hunting. Yeah, yeah, how do you prove that? And
(28:06):
so anyway, so that's where Ihave and you probably you've been in the
business a whole lot longer than Ihave been hunting. But game warnings can
come across your fans on your propertyif they just suspect your hunting. Isn't
that correct, I'm pretty sure itis. Yeah, I'm pretty sure they
can pull you over. If it'shunting season and you've got a cooler in
the back of your truck, theycan pull you over to check you.
(28:29):
And that that's just you know, again, like I said, I like
every poacher hung from a piece ofbarb wire. But but you know,
there's that slippery slow bothers me.Yeah, you can see it both ways.
I'm always going to air on theside of law enforcement because those guys
and the men and women who wearthat badge and go where they go and
(28:51):
do what they do and just walkinto camps of six eight ten deer hunters
all sitting with load of rifles nextto them and hope everything's going to go
okay. Uh, that touch aspecial kind of courage. I think it
really does, because if they're ifthey are bad guys, a lot of
things could go wrong real fast. And so I want them out there to
(29:14):
get those poachers so you can dowith them what you want with your barber.
But yeah, there is there issomething to be said. Ford.
I wonder how they get over theif you hate to get into law here,
but fourth Amendment is and that's whatthey cite. You have to have
probable cause, and how they getaround that in this situation. That's what
(29:37):
That's what the Open Fields deal didwas give them, uh, give them
a pass on probable cause, letthem go in. Doctrine will never override
the US Constitution exactly what. Yeah, and that's why here, that's why
they're challenging in the court. Nowwe're going to go with the constitution it
(29:57):
concept. Yeah, we seems almostantiquated these days, doesn't it. Who
would want to do that? Yeah, you know, first amend the second
man, you know who cares.Thank you, John? All right,
Yeah, I'll see audios. Ohmy word, Rick, hang on,
(30:17):
I'll come back to you when weget back. On the way out,
I got to tell you guys aboutblack Horse Golf Clubs up on Fry Road,
just a little way south of twoninety. You've heard me talk about
it many times, had a goodemail conversation in fact, with the guy
who's GM up there, Craig Hicks. He and his staff want nothing more
than for you to have just afantastic time up there at black Horse.
(30:40):
There's two golf courses there, theNorth and the South, both of which
are a lot of fun to play, both of which tend to be in
good shape most of the time.Sometimes the weather gets them, sometimes the
transition gets them, but they're alwaysworking on it to make sure that you're
going to have a great golf experience. And if you don't, just let
them know if the experience instance isbad, because you can't hit a good
(31:02):
shot, go to the other endof the range, you get some lessons.
That's the best thing you can dothere is just get yourself back into
a little bit better golfing shape. You can go up there on a day
like today because they have the twocourses and usually you and a buddy can
get out within about the time it'lltake you to warm up with a bucket
of balls. Go to black Horse, you'll see what I mean. If
(31:22):
you've never played there, you reallyowe it to yourself. It's a really
nice daily fee facility that also hasa membership option that gets you preferred tea
times. It gets you unlimited rangeuse, which is fantastic. You can
help you whatever lessons you get atthe other end, you can come back
up to the front end and justhit balls and hammer that good swing into
(31:45):
your memory banks, into your musclememory. Blackhorsegolf Club dot com is the

(32:07):
a little bit in here. Ithink it's below seventy five now at least
Oh my gosh, it was rough. Adam says he fixed this little toggle
thing I got to hit here,so I'm going to cross my fingers,
and it worked. How about that? What's up? Rick? Good morning
morning. I want to hear acouple of things here. First, I
want to tell you I got tolisten to your other show, if you
don't mind me mentioning your fifty plusthat comes on at twelve noon every day
(32:30):
on me thank you weekdays at noon. I want to change the name,
all right. I want to changethe name from fifty plus to adult and
beyond adult and beyond that sounds likesomething that you have to have be eighteen
to look at on the website.Well, I think it applast to anybody
eighteen and over. Okay, ifthey're smart, I think they can run
(32:53):
a lot. They may not canuse it today, but tuck it away.
Know where I'm going. I thinkit good. Let's tall property rights
for real, real quick for men. Okay, Yeah, you know a
lot about that guy, the lastguy on there, you know, he
was on you know, right on. I can't disagree with him. I'm
(33:14):
a real estate broker. Farming ranch. Guys. You know I'm licensed to
do that. I'm not a licensedattorney attorney, so therefore I can't get
living with you know, my drill. You don't have to do that.
But we are talking about something thatinvolves a lot of legalities. Sure,
and you know I have dealt withthis for forty five years full time my
(33:37):
business, on both sides of everysincere And the bottom line is this.
If you have one hundred acres ina game warden or a sheriff as he
mentioned, I'm just kind of readingwhat he said, has probable calls,
they can come on your proper Yeah. I don't have a problem with that.
(34:00):
Okay, Now, either that ora warrant. Now, if they
call your property, they're chasing somebodyunder probable calls obviously, but they cannot
come in your house. Yeah,that's a different They can't come that's a
different deal. Now, the onlyperson that they may have the right to
(34:24):
come in and search your houses isa game warden. Now their their their
trucks, say state police, andyou know they make and come in without
and come in only under the probablyprobable calls laws or whatever they are.
(34:45):
And if and if you don't letthem in. They're going and they won't
end. They're gonna get in.They'll get it warrant come legally, they'll
they'll they're they're coming, but onyour land. If they're they're coming across
your property. Now if there,if they tear your gate down and they're
driving across their property, obviously asa property on it, you have them
(35:07):
right to know what the heck isgoing on. They need to beat treat
you with the highest guard of respectand uh and they need to tell you
everything that is going on. Andthey and they're required to fix your spens.
Yeah, well that's how they cando Sure, yeah, I know,
but sometimes get them to do it. They't need it. But anyway,
(35:30):
you know, that's a real touchysubject as far as trespassers go.
Well, they don't apply, they'regoing to jail, you know if and
I'm not. I have been onboth sides of I had to. I
had to press charges to get themstone and jail on my eving, on
on my own property, and inother cases I did not. They just
(35:54):
took them to jail the last day. Got touch base on is this the
master's room? Rick? I hateto do it, man, but I'm
already at a break. You kindof burned up the whole segment. Man,
We're done, Yeah, we're done. Yeah, we'll come back to
it. I'm gonna get and I'llget to it a little bit, all
right, man, thank you?All right? All right? Yeah,
I hate to do it, butI want to stay on time. I
(36:15):
got to keep Adam happy too,and I gotta work without him. Rick's
just my pal. Primo Doors opentoday from ten to two, so that
gives you what two hours and fifteenminutes to go to their website Premo doors
dot com and look at a fewbefore and after pictures and you're gonna you're
(36:37):
gonna call whoever else is in thehouse and say, hey, you need
to come look at this. Maybewe need a front door, Maybe we
should get a new front door, because Primo Doors does that every day.
They have ten thousand selections something likethat. I don't know how many it
is, and that may seem overwhelming, but if you will take your enthusiasm
(36:57):
and a picture of your current frontdoor in the front of your house over
to the wear or they, excuseme, the showroom. It's not a
warehouse, it's a showroom. Overon North Post Oak, which is very
close to where I am here bythe galleria. You go in there with
that, with those pictures and sitdown with someone who will then walk you
through the process of eliminating like ninehundred and ninety of those doors, and
(37:23):
you'll have a good idea what's gonnareally suit you best for the front of
your house. That first impression thatyour home makes when anybody comes there,
whether it's relatives for a holiday,or a delivery driver or the neighbors are
just walking the dog, they'll love. Man, that's a beautiful door.
(37:43):
What a beautiful door. Where'd theyget it? Primo Doors is where they
got it. Family owned and operatedfor better more than ten years now,
and the owners have been in thedoor business in Houston for twenty plus years.
If you drop my name when yougo over there, when you call,
when you sit down to do thepaperwork, Jason Fortenberry, the guy
(38:05):
who owns the place, promised hewill give you your handle set. That
can save you several hundred dollars rightthen and there on the cost of that
brand new front door. Very wellfinished, more so than average. Most
door companies use a lot less varnishto seal that door for you and so
you don't have to worry about doinganything but just wiping the pollen in the
(38:29):
dust off of it for quite sometime to come. Primodors dot Com,
like I said, they're open today. If you're fired up and you got

I found something to lighten the mooda little bit and get off of
this legal give and take. Isaw a story I kind of got tickled
by up in Oregon, all wayway way up there in Oregon, northwest
(39:19):
corner of the of the country, almost a hatchery truck carrying one hundred and
two thousand young salmon had a littlemishap on the road and turned over and
its tank busted and those one hundredand two thousand salmon were out. That's
(39:46):
the bad news. The good newsis that the water gushing out of the
tank was flowing downhill and right directlyinto a live stream, not the digital
(40:07):
kind, the real kind, alive stream, and it the water was
sufficient to carry almost all of thosefish into that stream. So there they
were locked up and headed for whereverthey were headed. And who knows,
(40:28):
maybe one of those salmon threw alittle banana peel under one of the tires
of the truck. But nonetheless thesalmon were freed, and most of them,
the story said, made it outof captivity and off to start their
new life somewhere else. And ifI lived in Oregon and I knew where
(40:49):
that stream was, that's probably whereI'd be fishing a little more often than
usual for the next I don't know, several years, one hundred and two
thousand of them, It doesn't Unfortunately, there was no picture of the stream
that they fell into, or noreal word on exactly how big those salmon
were. I'm hoping maybe that'll whoknows, maybe that that will imprint on
(41:15):
them as their home water, andmaybe those one hundred and two thousand will
have a reunion in a in amatter of time. Either way, it's
a pretty cool story. Seven onethree, two, one two, five
seven ninety. Email me Doug Pikeat iHeartMedia dot com. I'm still seeing
debate online about the new trout ruletoo, and the tag deal on the
(41:37):
twenty eight. I think it isnow is in place that the commission last
I saw said Okay, that's good. So I think it's September one maybe
when they have a chance to printall this stuff. I think that's when
it's gonna that's when it's gonna gointo effect. I'm looking at my emails
(41:58):
now, leaning in on them. What's new. Okay, I got that?
Yes, thank you, I gotthat. David, there's that story.
I'm gonna go look at that. And Kevin Wade in the question always
comes into plays what's the difference betweenenforcement and harassment? And I'm one hundred
(42:23):
percent for enforcement. I'm one hundredpercent against harassment on either side. And
there there has been I hear becauseI don't run into game wardens that often.
Nobody does because we don't have enoughof them. First of all,
I wish we had twice as manygame wardens. But there's there's been a
(42:44):
change. I hear in the theenthusiasm over which game wardens enforced the law.
Back when I was guiding, forexample. There were a lot of
opportunities given to most people who hadmade honest mistakes. Say that, for
(43:06):
example, they had created their ownplug for their shotgun for dub season and
had cut the dowel a quarter inchtoo short so that an extra shell could
go into the magazine. Honest mistakein a lot of cases, and the
game warden would stand there and talkto that person long enough to find out
(43:29):
whether he or she actually was tryingto pull a fast one, or had
just mismeasured and maybe checked it withthree inch shells and now was using two
and three quarters or whatever. Therewas a lot of opportunity given for people
to plead a case honestly, andthe game wards have heard every story in
(43:51):
the books. I don't think youcould make up a story a game warden
hadn't heard before, not once they'vebeen in the field for a couple of
years. So they would either optto go ahead and write a ticket for
an infraction. They would either issuea written warning or issue a verbal warning,
depending on how honest and open youwere. I've heard that some of
(44:15):
the people going into game warden workare a little more cut and dried black
and white, no gray area whatsoever. You either did or didn't break the
law, and if you did, you're getting a ticket. And I haven't
experienced that yet, and nobody's botheredme, or at least there'd be no
reason to because I have my licenses. I don't I don't even take home
(44:37):
any fish. I don't know howthey get me for taking home one that
was wrong if I'm not taking any. But it's it's just the climate has
changed, the temperament of everybody outthere has changed, and part of that's
our own fault, because there aremore and more people out there from this
current generation of people who think theycan kind of do whatever they want.
(45:01):
And I've experienced that. I've seenthat. I've heard arguments around cleaning tables
and at boat remps between game wardensand somebody who thinks that they just why
are you bothering me? Why areyou bothering me? There are a lot
of I've heard this actually out ofsomebody's mouth, Why are you bothering me?
(45:22):
There are a lot of bigger criminalsout there, oh bigger really?
So what does that make you alot of bigger criminals out there than me?
Just a couple of fish, acouple of short fish, No big
deal. Ah yeah, it iskind of a big deal to everybody else
who's standing around here. So Iunderstand why some of the game wardens might
(45:43):
be a little less tolerant, especiallyif people are disrespectful to them. That
is a hard job, and I'llstand behind them anytime they need somebody to
back them up and remind people thatwhat the game wardens are doing is essential
to the future of our natural resourcesin this state, in any other state.
(46:04):
And if you if you don't wantto get in line, just go
go play pickleball or something, butjust don't be out there breaking the law
and then get yourself all worked upbecause you got caught. If you're if
you're a poacher and you get caught, you're gonna get the book thrown at
you, and rightfully. So ifyou've made an honest mistake and you maintain
(46:28):
your calm and you confess to thatmistake, there's a chance that you might
get a warning, and that you'reprobably only gonna get one of those,
but you're gonna get a warning maybe, But it's got to there's got to
be mutual respect, and there are, unfortunately here and there. I've heard
stories also of game wardens just beingmore forceful than necessary. And I do
(46:54):
know somebody who, in front ofhis two sons, young sons, got
a ticket once for not having afederal duck stamp, and that was after
the place where he bought it assuredhim that he had. He didn't know.
It was his first duck hunt, and he was assured by the people
(47:14):
who sold him his license that hehad everything he needed to go duck hunting,
and so he did. And thegame warden who showed up, and
this guy, I believe even hadhis receipt with him, he said,
look here, this is what theytold me I needed to buy. I
bought it, and that's why I'mout here hunting, and that's why I'm
presenting this to you. And infront of that man's two young sons still
(47:37):
gave him a ticket for that.So I don't know, I don't know.
I think we're going to punch theclock and go away from this for
a little while. I'll tell youwhat, We'll take a little break here.
We'll be right back on the wayout real quickly. Moody Gardens in
just a short couple of weeks isgoing to host the third annual fly Fishing
Film Festival down there on the largestscreen in Texas. It's amazing. I
(48:01):
mc the event last year and hadan absolute ball. I'm doing it again
this year and cannot wait to getdown there. These are internationally acclaimed and
award winning films from around literally aroundthe world. That theater is the only
one of its kind. It's thebiggest in Texas. Like I mentioned,
you're gonna have a good time. There's great food gonna be there, cash
(48:23):
bar if you want to have acouple of pops and maybe stay overnight at
Moody Gardens and watch both nights offilms. They're gonna be vendors there with
all the latest gear and some greatraffle items. You can register in advance
too for fly fishing lessons while you'redown there. Tickets are just fifteen bucks,
with one night and two night hotelpackages available, so you can do
(48:44):
what I'm doing and just stay thereand just immerse yourself in it. Moodygardens
dot org. Go there for thedetails, the ticket and hotel packages,
all of that. Moodygardens dot org. Holy ca, I can't possibly ignore
the masters any longer. I don'tthink. Let me get it up on
my screen, though, because whatI'm concerned with is that I can't.
(49:07):
It's just not showing up. I'mjust gonna type in Masters. I'm gonna
get right back to it. Believeme, I am going to get right
back to it. I don't wantthat. I want live stream Masters,
live stream. Here we go.Oh there's what I wanted to see watch
live twenty twenty four Masters. Iwas watching it here at work yesterday.
Yeah, there's something going on.I'm sure. Oh, nothing's on the
(49:29):
air yet. That's the problem. That's why everything's so slow. I wish
they would show the practice range.I think there's there's a lot to be
learned from watching how these guys warmup and the while each of them has
a beautifully, almost flawless looking swing, if you can watch them firsthand,
(49:50):
like I used to do when Iwas broadcasting from the the Shell Houston Open
out at Golf Club of Houston,I would I would instead of setting up
over on vendor row where all thefans were coming through to get their first
look at the facility on tournament days, I set up over by the practice
facility where I could watch these guyshit balls and try to learn something.
(50:14):
I don't know how much of thatknowledge stuck, because I still don't play
all that well, but it wasvery fascinating to watch how the routine and
the rhythm and how they they don'tshray far from a specific number of shots
hit with each club and a specificnumber of targets with each club, and
(50:36):
whatever they're doing, they'll do thatfor they'll do full swing stuff for a
while, then they'll go to theshort game area, then they go to
the putting green, and then theygo to the first tee, and it's
really interesting. I remember watching Camillavi Jagas once starting out with hitting hitting
balls at with a wedge to tenyards maybe fifteen, then twenty twenty five
(51:00):
and thirty there were, and Iwatched him hit quite a few balls and
when you look out to where theywere, they were kind of in little
piles about five yards apart. Therethat dialed in, which is something the
average ameter like myself is never goingto be able to do because we don't
(51:22):
get the opportunity to focus that closelyon that much precision. We're just trying
to make good contact more more oftenthan not, so to the Masters.
I have the leaderboard here in frontof me. I printed a copy of
it because I know it would beeasier to go down that and make little
notes on it. And in caseyou missed it yesterday while you were watching
(51:46):
the last night watching the Astros justimplode, we've got to get our pictures
back. Bryson Deshambo actually shot seventythree yesterday, but still wound up hide
with Scotty Scheffler, who shot evenParr, and Max Homer, who picked
up one shot to Parr yesterday. Now suddenly all three of those guys who
(52:09):
have been on pretty much everybody's listall week, all three of them at
six under par. Hoy Guard heshot seventy three yesterday and has only two
shots off the lead. Davis Mori, kaala, Well, they're the only
two at three under par and stillany any of those guys certainly within striking
(52:31):
distance, and you would almost haveto include the one unders. Now,
do I think Scotty Scheffler is goingto trip over his shoelace and shoot seventy
four today? No, probably not. I suspect that he will go out
and do just what he's been doing, hopefully in a little less wind that's
(52:52):
been a factor. And in fact, I've got a couple of quotes.
I'll talk about that in a littlewhile, but yesterday to Shoe but even
Parr like he like Shefferd did oneover, like the Shamba did one under,
like Homa did, Hoyguard won overDavis, even Parr, Klin Mori
Kawa got it to two under yesterdayand a Berg shot three under par yesterday,
(53:15):
which was just a miracle considering thatthe wind was blowing thirty plus miles
an hour. There were people talkingabout how they felt like they'd been run
over by a train, how they'dbeen in ten rounds with Mike Tyson.
That course beat them up, andthat course has a good way of doing
(53:38):
that, and in some cases it'sin some years, especially when the wind
blows like this, somebody usually alittle farther down the leaderboard than the names
I've mentioned, But somebody will sayit's unfair, and I don't know if
that's I don't know if that's notjust a little bit too far because everybody
(54:00):
out there playing the same golf courseand just because it doesn't align with your
way of thinking, then you know, I'm sorry. If it's not working
for you. It's not working foryou. But if the other guys are
out there and they're not complaining,at least not out loud, well then
you know you just got to gowith it. The cut line. I'm
(54:21):
gonna make sure that I'm right, because I saw it move once. She's
late yesterday. I want to sayit was at six Here we go,
yeah, there we go. Yeah, six over par makes the cut.
And when you look down below thatline, uh, here are the names.
Weir Rose, Zach Johnson, SirJoe Garcidwell he's he's getting older.
(54:45):
He's not gonna make many cuts anymore. There, Victor Hovelin missed it,
Burns missed, Jordan's Speith, Sosorry, Bubba Watson, so sorry,
Mal Naughty, so sorry, Schwartzel. I mean, there's some pretty good
players. Dustin Johnson, oops,so sorry. And it goes on and
on and on. A lot ofgood players did not make the cut,
(55:07):
the ones who did more power tothem. Six over par Is. Let
me get this thing to go upa little bit more. Where they go?
There they are? Why are thoseyeah there they are showing up.
Hold on, I'm gonna make surethat I'm right. On this cut line
again. Yeah, there it is. Yeah, six over par, made
it six over par through two roundsat the Masters. That just tells you
(55:29):
they they once again, they've setthis course up to where if you make
any kind of a little tiny mistake, you missed a landing area by six
feet on a lot of those greens, and your ball may roll down into
a collection area, it may rollinto the water, and either way you're
gonna have a very difficult time gettingup and down. I think one of
(55:50):
the things that's helping Scheffler is he'she's kind of he's got ice water in
his veins around the greens, andhe tends to put if he's out of
position in two, he tends toput himself back into a good position to
make a four, at least ifhe doesn't jar it. I watched a
little sizzle reel yesterday afternoon on thisthing, and there were a whole lot
(56:15):
of shots made from off the green, and it stands to reason, because
you're dealing with the best players inthe world, obviously, but man oh
man, they can play. Manoh man. I guess I can talk
about Tiger Woods for a minute.I should, because he's still there and
(56:36):
he set the record. I wantto say it's twenty four consecutive cuts made
at the Masters, and that ifyou saw him walk off yesterday after finishing
his second round, that I thinkmakes him feel like he's met the goal
he had set for himself. Andhis presser after the round, he talked
(56:58):
about how he was in great position, how he was only eight shots off
the lead going into the weekend, still felt like he had a chance to
win the tournament. If he'd havebeen hooked up to a polygraph machine,
I don't know that that would havegotten through without question. I think he
recognizes that he's played the best hecould play and is still significantly, significantly
(57:29):
behind the leaders. So he's gonnahave his work cut out to just stay
on TV. Well, he'll beon TV. Every shot he hits will
be on TV, it always is. But to really get into the conversation
by Sunday afternoon, which is whenit's gonna all heck's gonna break loose Sunday
(57:51):
afternoon, I'm anticipating. I wastalking to one of the guys from Golf
Clube Houston last night about this abouthopefully seeing on Sunday afternoon as they turn
for home the back nine at Augustaon Sunday. I would love to see
and very well might see five orsix guys at least within two shots,
(58:14):
and that will create a tremendous amountof pressure intension on those guys, and
some of them will crack, someof them will rise to the occasion.
And honest to goodness, if it'sthat close after after all but the last
nine holes of that tournament, itwould be anybody's game, and I would
(58:37):
have to go back to Scheffler,I really would. He's just been He's
just been the iceman. Nothing's phasinghim. He's not making big mistakes,
he's getting himself out of trouble, making sure he gives himself a chance to
get out of trouble. And he'srolling a few putts. We'll see.
I'm gonna take a break on theway out Bellville meat Market out there on
(58:59):
Highway thirty between Celia and Hempstead, about fifteen minutes either way north or south
from those two things. And whenyou get into town, you get in
the middle of town, what youneed to do, and if you don't
know, if you've never been there, just roll down your window and then
when you smell barbecue smoke, justdrive toward it. Drive toward the barbecue,
(59:20):
and the reward will be once you'veparked and walked inside. It's like
a little kid walking into a toystore at Christmas. But this is for
your palate. This is for youromnivorous needs and cheeses and spices and whatnot.
But it's mostly meat products, beef, chicken, pork, jerky,
(59:40):
dry stick, all these different options. They have two dozen plus flavors of
sausage in there, all nice, delicious pecan smoke sausage, and man is
it delicious. There are samples ofone or more of those different sausages up
on the countertop every day. There'salso the opportunity to eat lunch or dinner
(01:00:02):
there every day. I believe thatopens up at about ten o'clock in the
morning and stays open till seven o'clockat night. Where what you do is
on the way out there with thefamily, you make a list of what
you want to bring home for thenext couple of weeks, and then when
you get there, you drop thatlist off and then move about six or
seven steps to your left from themain meat counter and stand there. You
(01:00:23):
might have to stand in line fora minute if it's lunch time, and
get yourself a delicious barbecue lunch togo eat on the patio if you cannot
get all the way to Belleville MeatMarket. Most everything that they offer up
to and who knows, possibly includinga half a calf or something like that,
can be delivered right to your door. They're very good about that.
(01:00:44):
I've had I've shipped stuff as faras salt or Park City, Utah,
and it made it up there, absolutely delicious, fresh, ready to be
eating, which it was. Iheard in about an hour and a half
or two hours. They have eightyfive fifteen ground beachs. This is a
big deal. That's kind of alwaysa big deal there. Three fifty nine
a pound if you buy ten poundsor more, and who can't eat ten
pounds? A big family, gotgrowing kid. I got a sixteen year
(01:01:07):
old son. He could knock thatoff in a week easily. Belleville Meatmarket
dot Com forty two plus years theysay, serving greater Houston. I say,
serving probably half of Texas if youcheck license plates and driver's licenses going
through there every day. Belleville Meatmarketdot Com. This is sports Talk seven
(01:01:29):
ninety a Houston sports fan on airand on Facebook. They contact back to
the Doug Fike Show. I foundit interesting. There's a couple of things.
I'm gonna go over some notes fromthe Masters, and I would be
interested in hearing anybody's predictions who don'twhose predictions don't include on the podium.
(01:01:54):
If there was one in a one, two three spots, the Shambeau or
Chef Homer, if there are threeother people you think are gonna come out
of nowhere and beat all three ofthose guys, I'd be curious to see
and hear why you think that.I just I just don't see it.
(01:02:16):
It's gonna be one of those threeto win it, and I wouldn't be
surprised if they If they nobody's gonnarun away with this one, I don't
believe, but they could. Theycould very well distance themselves by another shot
or two, pardon me, Andthey're already two shots clear of Hoyguard and
(01:02:39):
three shots clear of Davis and Morikawa, and then it just gets worse from
there. So they wouldn't have toreally do a whole lot other than maybe
maybe work in a two under andget to eight and now suddenly on Matster's
(01:03:00):
weekend, these guys are having tochase bigger gaps. Everybody the field is
chasing even bigger gaps, and Ijust don't know that they can pull that
off. Somebody's gonna have to ricochetone off a tree and make an eagle
where they might have made double bogieto see that go down. It's just
(01:03:22):
that course is too difficult, andwith the wind the way it was yesterday,
these guys are gonna be The windI don't think is supposed to be
quite as bad today. I'm gonnatry to get a real let me see
if I can get to a agust weather. Let's see what the forecast
(01:03:45):
is for today. Uh yeah, fifty eight degrees currently wind at six miles
per hour. That wind is supposedto let me see if I can get
an increase the wind doesn't I amnot getting it on this thing. It's
only blobboll here. I'll just punchwind. Yeah, seven miles an hour,
ten at one o'clock, ten atfour o'clock, and just virtually no
(01:04:09):
win today. But their legs aregoing to be tired, their bodies are
going to be tired from the whippingthey took yesterday. And if you don't
think that course is playing quite difficult, know that eight. Whereas the statistic
(01:04:30):
here, I was just looking atit. Where did it go? Four
of the past ten Green Jacket winnersdid not make the cut Johnson, Garcia,
Jordan Speith, Bubba Watson. Imentioned them earlier. Uh Hideki Matziyama
made it by a shot, andJohn Rawm was only one better than Manciyama.
(01:04:57):
So they're still playing. But fourguys who owned green jackets, and
none of those four are really soold that you wouldn't think they'd be at
Dustin Johnson, why did he notmake the cut? Garcia? I can
see, but he's the kind ofguy who can just kind of hang around.
Usually in these things, it beatthem up. It beat them up.
Terrell hadn't two years ago. Terrellhadn't called augusta national unfair at times
(01:05:24):
which it made some headlines. TheHome of the Masters doesn't doesn't tend to
draw too much criticism because everybody hopefullywants to end up there, and nobody
who ends up there wants to beshown up by the golf course, if
that makes sense. But it waswindy, it was blowing forty miles an
(01:05:46):
hour, forty miles an hour, thirty to forty miles an hour sometimes and
balls moving that the new rule actuallyon wind caused movement of the golf ball,
is that you just put it back. You just put it back where
it was and play on. Anda couple of times yesterday, at least
once that I know of, andI think there were others, balls got
(01:06:11):
blown by the wind on the greenand ended up rolling off the green and
down into collection areas fifteen twenty yardsaway. That would have been had the
old rule been in place and itbeen just well that's the way it goes,
that could have been just disastrous forsome of those guys. So,
even with the advantage they had ofbeing able to put those things back and
(01:06:33):
not worry about it, when you'restanding over the ball and oh my gosh,
the wind's starting to blow harder. Here comes a big gust, and
your heart just sinks in your throat, because if you're anywhere near that golf
ball and it moves, you getcharged a stroke. Not anymore at least,
and it's still it's still one ofthe no matter how you cut it,
(01:06:55):
it's one of the greatest tests ingolf and set up every bit as
difficult, I think as the USopens, and in some cases I do
kind of agree with the players thatit can be a bit much. The
grass is just cut. The turfis cut so tight around the greens,
(01:07:18):
and that's why those guys get toput as many times as they do around
the greens. At most other tournamentsyou get six or eight feet off the
green and you got fluffy stuff everywhere, and it's a little bit almost the
opposite of that. At the Mastersat Augusta, they shade that stuff down.
(01:07:38):
And I saw a couple of ballsyesterday. I can't remember what hole
it was on, but they weren'trolling that fast. And there is a
little collar right at the water maybethree four feet maybe six feet wide in
a lot of places of turf beforea thicker, heavier turf before the ball
would actually roll in the water. And one ball I was watching was just
(01:08:00):
barely rolling down that very shaved partof the contour. And then right when
it got to the thicker stuff thatI thought, well, wow, that
ball's gonna hold up right on theedge of that, it accelerated, it
got even faster and blush another ballin the water. These guys aren't used
(01:08:21):
to that, and I'm sure itgets in some of their heads. I'm
sure, especially people who are fairlynew to the golf course. They haven't
played many Masters, and not manypeople have. But it's got to be
just a deflating feeling to hit whatyou think is a really good shot and
have it land within ten twelve feetof the hole and then spin back,
(01:08:42):
just a tiny bit, spin back, maybe four or five inches, but
then never stop, and down anddown and down it goes. And your
shot that you're thinking, oh good, I'm gonna get a birdie out of
this, man, I know thatputt. I can handle that. And
then you look up again and you'rein a drop air area somewhere. It's
tough, man. All Right,We're gonna take a little break here.
(01:09:03):
When we get back, I'll getinto a little bit more. I saw
a couple of questions come in aboutthe Masters. I'll try to get to
them. If you are wondering whatto do this summer, you can do
like most of us in this audience, do and fish a little more and
a little more and a little more. And if you're gonna fish, you
might as well be registered in thetwenty twenty four CCA Texas Star Fishing Tournament.
(01:09:28):
Early bird registration is open. Theevents sponsored by Texas Ford Dealers,
Academy Sports and Outdoors Progressive Insurance. Those are the big main sponsors. You
can get the fish from Memorial Weekendall the way to Labor Day for a
chance to win a bazillion prizes. There's all kinds of good stuff. There's
boats and trucks and trailers and giantgift cards and all kinds of things.
(01:09:53):
And for the kids college scholarships, that'd be a nice thing to tuck away.
Huh. Lot of kids are goingto win, and yours can be
one of them. If you're registeredbefore the tournament starts, before you go
fishing. You don't have to registerbefore it starts. You just have to
register before you catch a fish andtry to enter it in the competition.
(01:10:15):
You want to wait till later,go ahead, but you're risking catching the
fish of a lifetime and it beingworth a scholarship and the kid not being
entered, or you not being entered, and maybe you miss out on a
you catch it one of those tagredfish, you miss out on a truck
a boat, motor and trailer.Sign up, now, get it done.
(01:10:36):
You'll be helping conservation in this state, as CCA has done for fifty
plus years, and you'll be enteredto win some incredible prizes. Star Tournament

(01:11:00):
This is the Doug Fike Show.Let me see if he was the
first group two three, It lookslike we got three groups on the golf
course. Now. I just watchedRicky Fowler tee off, and that looks
like Mansiyama going right behind him,and they are, well, there's a
bunch of guys at six over andall. They're all just getting out of
(01:11:23):
the golf course trying to get intheir Saturday and Sunday rounds. I anybody
who's more than maybe two over atthis point just stands no chance, as
far as I'm concerned, not thatI'd ever be that good. I wish
I were, I wish I wereeven half that good, but I'm not
so ill. I'll concede my inabilityto play and just enjoy watching the best
(01:11:47):
in the world go at it.This is probably as good a test as
anywhere in the world of all thetalent that's available to golf. The US
Open draw, the Open Championship ofGreat Britain draws Players Championship. Yeah,
but this one right here, thisone in the US Open, I think,
(01:12:10):
are the two most difficult tasks tothe most difficult hurdles to jump in
golf. And it would be fun. I wonder. I do wonder sometimes
how they set up Augusta National GolfClub when it's not Master's weekend, because
(01:12:30):
they clearly can't expect the average memberof that golf club, who's probably a
fourteen handicap, to navigate that coursein less than five and a half or
six hours. And nobody's going totolerate that, especially men and men and
women of their stature and position inlife. They don't have six hours to
(01:12:54):
play round of golf. I wouldsuspect that a lot more pen placements are
towards the middles of greens. Iwould suspect that, well, first of
all, very few people are playingfrom the same tea boxes these guys are
playing from, which is another thing. Altogether. It's very interesting to see
these courses set up for the highestlevel of competition, and if there's a
(01:13:18):
good opportunity coming up in June.We have a live golf event coming to
Golf Club of Houston in June. And if you've never been to that golf
course, when you go out there, pardon me my throw. It's a
little dry this morning. When yougo out there, look very closely at
the and even if you have beenout there but not played the actual championship
(01:13:42):
teas, just go back there ona couple of holes and look at how
much farther it is than where youand your friends are playing. Look at
how much how many more you areLook on the scorecard at the yards from
the tips and the yards from whereverit is you and your friends are playing,
and it's just an amazing different There'sa really good camera angle on right
(01:14:04):
now on the TV feed from onefairway. I think it's is that more
coal? Yeah, it's more coalsstanding there in the fairway. And then
the angle was up and looking backdown to where you can really see how
much undulation there is just in thatone fairway. It's amazing how up and
(01:14:27):
down and up and down these guyshave to walk. This is day three
at least of it, and youcan almost bet that they've all played at
least one practice round coming in,and how they're conditioned so that they can
do that. It's even more amazing, though, that the people who played
this tournament twenty thirty years ago andweren't in nearly the physical condition that these
(01:14:53):
guys are. This is what theeighty eighth Masters something like that, and
back then most guys were eating cheeseburgersand drinking beers after their rounds and not
taking care of themselves like these guysdo. It's it's fascinating, fascinating to
me. I played a course it'svery similar to Augusta over in at Pearl
(01:15:17):
River Resort in Mississippi, and afantastic golf course had pretty much the same
amount of elevation change and whatnot. And one of the rounds I'll never forget
was played under cart path only conditions, which made it we didn't have to
(01:15:38):
walk every fairway. We just hadto park the cart and walk over to
the ball and hit. And bythe time we were done, I was
just gassed. My legs were justabout to give out, and I wasn't
hitting the ball very well that day. Anyway, and I was trying to
score. We had a little wageringgoing on my friends and I back then,
many many years ago, and Iwas trying, like the Dickens to
(01:16:01):
play well. And by about thesixteenth or seventeenth hole, I was just
spent. I just had almost nothingleft. So hats off to all of
them. I'm glad they're doing whatthey're doing. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety email on me, Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. I
may swing back to fishing in alittle bit. I'm gonna take this next
(01:16:23):
break here on time, hopefully andhelp Adam stay where he needs to stay
to do the business side of thisshow. So why don't we do that,
And then I'm gonna make a coupleof adjustments and take a look at
some emails too. During the break. On the way out, I will
remind you that this Moody Garden's FlyFishing Festival is coming up very soon April
(01:16:46):
twenty six and twenty seven, twoweekends from now, and I hope you
all can make it down there.I don't know if the theater would hold
all of you, but it willhold most of you, So come on
down. I'm gonna be there.I'm gonna again. I had a blast
last year. And the beauty ofthis year is that both nights have different
films. I look forward to that. Last year it was the same films
(01:17:10):
on Friday night and Saturday night. This year totally different films. So go
ahead and plan to make a dayand a night and a day and a
night of it to where you cansee all of these films, because every
one of them, if it's anythinglike last year, is going to be
absolutely fantastic, absolutely fantastic, andyou're going to see them on the largest
(01:17:31):
screen in Texas, which was impressiveas can be last year. It's just
amazing. You're going to run intosome old friends, you can make plenty
of new ones while you're down there. Great food too, and you got
the cash bar until you run outof cash, so long as you're not
driving anywhere. Afterward, raffles, fly, fishing lessons, great vendors from
local and national companies, and meon the microphone hopefully to make sure we
(01:17:56):
all have a good time. Ticketsare just fifteen bucks and there are one
one and to night hotel packages available, and make a weekend of it,
which I highly recommend to get thefull experience. I was there last year,
like I said, and it justabsolutely had a blast. I know
you will too. Moodygardens dot org. That's where you go for details.

seven ninety dot com. Back tothe Doug Fike Show. The Masters is
underway and I just watched Ricky Fowlermiss a putt presumable. I think that
was his par putt actually, sohe's gonna slip back to seven over par
and I am gonna take a quicklook at emails to make sure I haven't
(01:18:43):
missed anything. Can I some ofthe attention to detail items that Augusta does,
Yeah, that the viewer sitting onyour couch and I have not been
to Augusta, but I certainly knowa lot of people who have, both
(01:19:03):
inside and outside the ropes, andthe feeling I get is that their attention
to detail at Augusta is just unparalleledanywhere in the world of golf. Now
that maybe somebody may disagree, somebodymight have been to something that they consider
(01:19:24):
a better setup or a better patronexperience, but by and large, they
do tend because they're not trying touse this as a fund raiser. They
don't need to raise funds at Augusta. They for the most part, if
you can get tickets, you're notgoing to get beat up. Now,
(01:19:46):
if you buy them secondhand, youmight pay a premium, but you can
you can get things that you willenjoy at reasonable race. Boy, there's
the Masters Champions dinner. I'll bedarn from last night, right I'm seeing.
Yeah, that's a pretty special groupof people right there. Holy cow,
(01:20:08):
Wow, that is impressive. Yeah, they do a very fine job
of that. The grounds are immaculate, as you know, and they have
crews stationed all around that golf courserain or shine, to deal with anything.
In fact, that's something that happenedyesterday. I was I think it
was John Rahm who got a littletwisted off about a bunch of stuff on
(01:20:30):
a green when he was trying toputt, and they set out actually I
believe he went in March's ball andthey sent out some a couple of guys
with blowers, just handheld blowers tosweep the green clean. And it still
wasn't to Rom's liking. If Irecall the story correctly, and he had
(01:20:54):
a little something to say about that. But my goodness, you're dealing with
all these different kinds of trees, shedding all kinds of stuff all year round,
and short of chopping down every treewithin thirty yards of a green when
it's blowing thirty miles an hour, there's not much you can do about that.
I think, I don't know.I think you just got to play
on in that stuff. Let mego talk to Ray. See what's up?
(01:21:17):
What's up? Ray? Oh?Just another damn paradise, Doug,
how are you? Yeah, I'mfeeling the same way. I kind of
enjoy where I'm sitting right now.I'm talking to you guys about fishing and
golf, and I'm watching the Masterson TV. It's not so bad.
Right. Well, I am actuallyon the road heading back to the house.
I got some got some things Ineed to do. But before I
(01:21:39):
do that, I wanted to giveyou a little story about Master. Sure
years ago, i'd say mid nineties, early nineties, I was living in
South Carolina. I was a plumberfor a long long time and getting my
hands dirty and all that. Wedo work all over South Carolina and North
(01:22:00):
Carolina. We built hotel, andwe were building a hotel up in that
area there the Masters, and thiswas my first experience with this. The
week like a few days before andall through the Masters and a few days
after, we and everybody else onthe hotel would just stop work because the
(01:22:27):
hotel, the additional hotel, theavailable hotels, or people to stay in
the hotels would basically uh up theprice of the hotel. There was no
there was we were you know,we were we were from all over the
Tri State area over there, sowe had to stay in hotels while we
(01:22:49):
were building the new hotel. Andit was just didn't make sense for the
workers to, you know that thecompanies to do that because the hotels were
so incredibly expensive. Oh yeah,we just took a week vacation, did
for you. Yeah, that's allyou can do. They're gonna make hay
(01:23:12):
while the sunshines the grounds at theMasters. I think that those the members
of Augusta National don't really care aboutmaking a few extra bucks. But the
hotels, the restaurants, everything surroundingthat tournament, they're gonna they're gonna bring
out the special menus for the Masters, I think, and I guess more
(01:23:33):
power to them, right, gotit? Got it? I was just
thinking about something about that overturned trouttruck, the delivery of all the you
know, if it's not if I'mif I'm not mistaken. Trout have a
great sense of homing. And whenthey mature and it's time for them to
(01:23:55):
spawn, you know, up thegreat that they go to. What do
what do lab raised and grown troutdue? Where did they what are their
instincts? Take them back to you? It's actually salmon, do that.
(01:24:17):
The salmon are the ones that godown and then come back right to the
same stream in which they were spawned. And who knows what will happen in
that spawning age for these poor salmon. They might they might swim straight up
that same stream and then take aright and go back and just sit in
the middle of the highway and flipflop around, who knows, looking for
(01:24:38):
the trip. But yeah, Ithink that'll be their new imprint. I
think I don't know that salmon farmraised or or hatchery raised salmon. I
don't know how they would imprint excepton that they're taking them out and stocking
them upstream in traditional spawning areas,I'm sure, And as young as those
(01:25:00):
fish are. I bet that's whatthey imprint on. I'm sure that's what
it is. Otherwise they just belost. Yeah, that's a pretty interesting
thought though. All Right, Ray, all right, buddy, Yeah,
thank you man. I appreciate thestory. All right, let me go
to that do this. I'll tellyou. Thinking about the hotel prices and
restaurant prices and whatnot. Like Raywas talking about, I remember years ago,
(01:25:25):
many many years ago, I wasstanding in a jewelry store in Georgetown
in the Caymans, Okay, standingin a jewelry store and just talking to
the guy. I was down therefor about a week doing a little bit
of business and just talking to theguy about this, that and the other,
thinking about bringing something home. Andall of a sudden, the guy
(01:25:48):
say excuse me, and he startstaking trays of jewelry off the countertop and
out of the cases and going intothe back with them and then coming out
with different cases of jewelry. AndI couldn't help but ask I said what
are you doing man? And hepointed out the window and he said cruise
(01:26:13):
ship. And what he was doingwas there were there were trays of jewelry
priced at X when locals were in, when people in town for more than
a day were in and trying todo business with him. And then there
were the trays for the tourists fromthe cruise ships. They had a little
(01:26:36):
higher prices too, if I recall, maybe a lot higher seven one three
two one two five seven ninety emailon me, Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot
com checking my emails again the windforecast. Really wanted to know. I
think I mentioned that a minute ago. All I saw was maybe the highest
number I saw for today is tenmiles an hour, and if that's anything
(01:26:57):
like a Galveston Bay forecast, thatmeans it'll be a probably fifteen at least
before the end of the day.But nothing, absolutely nothing like yesterday.
And looking at live feed right nowof the oh, that's probably the second
hole I can't remember. But anyway, there's not a cloud in the sky
over there, and there's not apine needle or a leaf moving in any
(01:27:23):
of the trees that I'm looking at, So uh workout is hit it in
a bunker. There'll be a lotof that today already, some arrant drives
being hit by guys who are usuallypretty steady and I can't help but wonder
if that's a product of tired legsalready after the forced march and the and
(01:27:45):
just the stress of playing in twentyfive thirty mile an hour wind, just
the anxiety over you know, ismy putt's gonna sit there? Is it
gonna move right as I try tostrike it? All these things going through
their heads that they normally wouldn't dealwith. There's a good shot. Whoa
who was that? I didn't evenget to see. I just I looked
up and the ball was in theair, and it's about twenty foot twenty
(01:28:09):
foot or for prime might know. That's not Tiger. Tiger shouldn't be out
yet, should he? I guesshe is. Certainly is okay? Tiger
was? Oh no, yeah, that's from yesterday. That's why there was
no way he was out. It'ssea time twelve forty five Eastern time,
I presume, so eleven forty fivearound here. It's gonna be a good
(01:28:29):
day at the Masters, There's noquestion about that. If you get to
watch, watch and if you don't, I don't know why. This is
something that even non golfers might enjoy, just kind of listening to the announcers
a little bit and watching what isI still think probably golf's greatest spectacle.
(01:28:53):
It gathers the best in the world. All Right, I gotta take a
little break. I'm gonna do thatand get out on time for Adam because
I missed it by a mile. The first hour American Shooting Centers is on
West Timer Parkway between Katie and Highwaysix. You absolutely cannot miss it unless
you could miss a pyramid. InEgypt, the big burns that are the
(01:29:16):
backstops for all of their shooting areasare clearly visible from a long ways off,
and they go well. The pistolrange starts at five yards, the
rifle range goes out to six hundredyards. Additionally, on the property,
I think there are ten trap inskeet fields, if I'm not mistaken.
(01:29:41):
There are three sporting clays courses, because the current owner at Rigi is a
sporting clayze not just a fan,but he's also an expert shooter in sporting
clays, so that he loves that. There are also several five stand setups
around the property and a beginner wingshooting area for young people and adults who
(01:30:03):
have just tried never have tried toshoot a moving target. A lot of
fun. If you have trouble hittingbull's eyes, you have trouble breaking clay
targets, get some instruction. There'splenty of it available out there. There
is plenty of instruction in every shootingdiscipline, and it is a very safe
place to enjoy the shooting sports howeveryou would like to do that. One
(01:30:26):
of the best places I've been toever. It's the biggest non military shooting
facility in the entire state of Texas, and that's saying something. American Shootingcenters
dot Com is the website. Gocheck it out. American Shootingcenters dot Com.
The Dougpike Show on Sports Talk sevento ninety we start the third hour,
usually the beginning of golf talk onthis program, but with the Masters
(01:30:49):
going on, it's kind of hardto ignore. Scotti, Scheffler, Bryson,
Deshambeau, Max Home at six,Nikolai Hoyguard at four, and it
goes on from there all the wayto the folks who are out there now
grinding. Matsiyama Fowler six over par. Matsiyama is already birdied a whole.
(01:31:10):
He's up to five now. He'sbetter off than he was to start the
day, and good for him.He seemed to be playing pretty well.
He just teed off on I believethree, so he must have birdied two
maybe one. I'm not sure.I can't watch it as much as I
would like to, because then Iwould have to neglect that you guys,
and I'm not going to do that. What's up Forrest? What's going on,
(01:31:32):
mister pick? No, I'm watchinglittle golf. Who knows. I
might even go play a few holesthis afternoon. They're putting well, they're
driving well. Well. The guyswho are on TV right now can putt
and drive way better than you orme or both of us put together on
our best days ever. But they'renot doing as well as that the other
(01:31:56):
guys who will come out later.Let's just leave it at that. Yeah,
you're talking about Tiger. I rememberthe old comments and Fuzzy Zeller back
in the day what he was goingto serve at the Masters. Oh my
god, here I said that.So what's on your mind this morning?
Well, I'm still in the processof drinking coffee. I'm taking the weekend
off, and uh kind of kindof been neglecting the homestead as as they
(01:32:18):
say, and uh about to fryme some bacon and fry some eggs into
bacon grease, you know, theonly way to do it. Sure,
But uh, but I'm sitting here. Uh you know, I talked to
you a little bit about last week. I actually sitting here trying to enjoy
the bass Masters in Florida. Andyou would think the bass Masters in Florida
would be a show. I'd like, you know, frogs, chatter bag,
(01:32:41):
spinner baits up up in the dirt. But there, I mean,
there's several of them doing it.But they still got to show the guy
out there with the spotlight, youknow, out there Forida face in the
middle of lake. And it's gotto be Jordan Lee, probably my you
know, for whatever reason, myleast favorite Fisherman's kind of like watching Taylor
Swift Eddie watching him. But uh, but now, like we touched all
(01:33:04):
a little bit last week, Ishould be back up there where I lost
my what I honestly think would havebeen my first share of Lunker. And
and and for a tip for yourfor your listeners, I'm gonna say viewers,
I guess they're looking at their radio. I don't know, but uh
a tip for your listeners. AndI had been catching you know, fish
(01:33:25):
up to five pounds pretty much itwill all day throwing a fluke on fifteen
pound floor carbon. That was debatethat day. I was catching them another
thing if you site fishing or whatwhatnot. And uh even caught someone an
a rig. But so I gointo a wind blown pocket because people,
you know, you know how peopleshout from the wind. I go look
(01:33:45):
for the wind. That's what powerpoles are for. So I go in
the back of a wind blown pocket. It's twenty five miles an hour.
Good drop my poles. Fan cashedaround and catch a five pounder. I
said, well, there's a mainlake point. I'm going to go around
to the next pot. I didgo to this. So I go around
this point and on the point it'sit's madded hy driller, about thirty feet
(01:34:06):
of mattered HyG drill. And Iknow it's a clear area between the hydrill
and the bank right catch fish.So I see some movement up there,
some some fry, some shad gettingchanged around. So I'm going to nose
up there, drop the poles. And I still have this rod with fifteen
pound floor of car. But I'mabout to throw over thirty foot of hydrill
mat instead of picking up my frogrod with sixty five pound braid. No,
(01:34:29):
no, no, go ahead exactly. So I loved that. I
love that. Uh that fleuke upin that hole is sure enough. Number
ten washed to voetgch happens And uhso I don't. I don't feel the
bottom. I'm kind of working working. It's like, where does she miss
it? All of a sudden,I seen my lions start to tear across
this Oh my god, across thishole like a bonefish. And uh,
(01:34:54):
I said to her, And shecome out of the water. Dug,
I've got a nine on the wallback then, back when I was dumb
enough keep bass, and I thinkshe could ate that fish. She come
up, showed me one time shereached straight at me into that hygh drilling
matt. Wow it see you.And I was like, I just sat
in the bottom of both about fifteenminutes, say okay, God, I'm
(01:35:15):
ready. Yeah, I quit,I quit man. But yeah, it
was. It was a tough day. But you know, we caught a
lot of fish. You know,I'm sure you've seen my posts. But
good fish. But the losing that, you know, once in a lifetime,
but you remember that. And that'ssomething about bass fishing. Yeah,
there's there are so many choices nowin lines and and I'm still I still
(01:35:39):
think like a saltwater fisherman more, even though I'm fishing a lot more bass
now. And what where do youdraw the line on when you will use
lighter flora carbon and when you wantto use heavier break Clearly thirty feet of
mad at hydrilla, you need ananchor rope to pull that stuff. You
know you can pull through that. But otherwise where do you change up?
(01:36:02):
What do you what are your strategies? How many different setups do you carry?
Well? I carry I keep aroundtwenty bait cast combos and four or
five spinning combos in my boat allthe time. And uh, my forer
carbet is strictly clear water lakes likemy gated lake, like where I was
(01:36:25):
and I was up and maybody alsoknow I was up on lake Macaniche Macadosius
and Acaniche above Macadosiaus. So myfloor carbet is generally clear water with no
obstacles between me and where I'm throwing. Yeah, okay makes sense. So
it's like a it's like a dropshot in deep water. It's like,
you know, stuff like that, and uh, I go to my braids
(01:36:45):
if there's significant Like if I'm punchingit could be gin clear water. But
if I'm punching a fifteen foot hydrillerbed, when that jig pops through that
hy driller, they're not going tosee the line. They're going to see
that jig and eater that they're notright. Or a frog you're throwing a
frog back and stuff you got nobusiness thrown into. Right. So but
I'm I'm after getting broke off thatFloria car, but I'm tempted to go
(01:37:06):
back. I've used fourteen and seventeenpound green string my whole life monofilament.
Yeah, I've never got broke off, so it may cost me a few
more bites. But after getting brokeoff on Florida car, but I may
I may lose the florid carbon alltogether, except for except for the gated
lake, which is like cap waterclear. There's not one statement you could
(01:37:27):
ever tell me about fishing that's notgoing to have an asterisk at the end
exactly, you know, And that'skind of the fun of fishing. Isn't
it really, isn't it. Ohyeah, oh yeah, that's you know,
that's the thing about it. Icould have went out there on the
lake I was in there. Icould have went out there, and you
know, I don't want to getoff on a forward faces sonar kick,
but I could have went out there, and I went out there one time
(01:37:49):
just to see because I was ona main lake point. Nothing of that
Alabama Rican caught one. But seeingthat fish coming to that Alabama rig was
nothing compared to the heart rate ofthirteen pounder hitting that flute that I didn't
know. Yeah, there's no comparisonseeing it coming and then anticipating the bite
on a unit. There's nothing likethat frog coming over Matt and all of
(01:38:10):
a sudden just blo. Yeah,it's a video game. You know,
it's a video game. That's whatit is. You already know what the
outcome is gonna be. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. And let me
ask you this, with all thisforward looking stuff, how important is it
to throw to make the right lurechoice? With those does it really matter
to me? It doesn't as long. It's like the other day, you
(01:38:33):
know, all these guys got theirlittle jkad minnos sure, Alabama riggs,
well, the little A few weeksago, I was throwing a chatterbait over
the top of the grass. Tome, it doesn't matter what the lure
is as long as it's the lurethat you can see good on your forward
facing sodar. Oh it presented, you know, like like a jerkbaits your
roof. But I was throwing achatterbait over the top of grass, and
(01:38:54):
that just was the lure I hadand it worked. It worked finally,
as long as it's the lower youcan see and you could present to them
at the right dip. I don'tthink it matters what kind of bait it
is. Well, yeah, Iwould agree with you. And it just
kind of goes to show that maybeover the years, all of us have
put way too much emphasis on thesize and color of a bait because if
it's not working, we're just notputting it in front of fish. That
(01:39:16):
may be sad to think about, you know exactly, I've caught you know,
I keep a rocky one rod riggedup, a big, a big
rod rigged up with an eight inchglide bait. Wow, and I've caught
bass that I wouldn't sure when Iwhen I flipped it into the boat,
I wasn't sure which one was thebass, which one was the fly that
they will ship. Man, thata six or eight inch bass would climb
(01:39:38):
onto a loaf of bread and tryto eat it. I think it's just
a remarkable, exactly. That's sofunny. Man, Hey, but I
did hear. I don't know.I don't know if it's you that sent
it or somebody that said it.Maybe be in one of your guides.
You know, they're throwing the bigglide baits now on the coast, catching
these big trophy trail. Yeah.Yeah, and that's that's something that gets
overlooked. And I want to getin the ser down there at Corpus.
(01:40:00):
I'm gonna make a couple of tripswith Cliff this summer, and I guarantee
you I'm gonna throw some of thosebig things. It's hard because it's just
it'll wear you out trying to throwthat thing a hundred times. And that
I think it's Oh yeah, theywork so well with the forward looking stuff
because you know there's a fish thereand you just got to actually dangle it
off his nose. But when you'retrying to heave that thing into the surf
(01:40:24):
and get it back and heave somethingelse out and get it back. That's
that big and that bulky it.You you got to really want to keep
throwing that lure. And oh yeah, well, plus you hang it up
when you're out there. You knowyou're on the bank or on the surtety
hang it up. But if youever interested, I can seat you a
link for a It's an eight inchor seven or eight inch glide bait that
(01:40:46):
it's exactly the same as the bigpopular branch here that are thirty bucks apiece,
but I get it for nine ninetynine. So if you break it
off off ten bucks instead of fortybucks, you know I'm not throwing any
forty dollars lower. I can assureyour man. No. Yeah, I've
caught a lot of fish on alot of lures that would cost a lot
less. One of my favorite thingsI ever did, and I got to
go after this. I'll tell youthis real quick. During late summer for
(01:41:11):
years I would run down and takeadvantage of King Mackerel coming real close to
the surf side jetty and throwing topwaters at him. A lot of guys,
most of the guys down there wouldthrow big spoons and they'd catch them.
But on those top waters, man, these things would start at the
bottom and just come straight up fullspeed and come six eight ten feet out
of the air, shaking that lurein their mouths, and a lot of
(01:41:31):
times you'd break off a really expensive, beautiful top water. And I started
going to lure shows and these antiquelure shows, and for every tackle box,
these guys, bye, they findone good lure, and then about
thirty just junkers. And I wouldgo to the I said, where's your
junk And for like a dollar ortwo dollars, I'd get these top waters
(01:41:54):
that were in great shape. Theymight need a couple of hooks, or
might need a little something else,But the bottom line is if you're throwing
it at King Mackley, he's goingto destroy it anyway. So what the
heck? Oh yeah, And Ihad a class doing that. Man,
All right, partner, Well, good luck going and finding that fish again
and getting it to eat and hangon. And I hope you do.
I really do, Forrest. I'mgonna try it now. I'm gonna message
(01:42:15):
you a picture of a couple oflittle baits I got too, if you
get time, Yeah, yeah,I'd kind of like to go back to
what you think they are what theywere, Yeah, yeah, I may.
Yeah, I may try to takesomething like that down to the beach
when I go down there, becauseit will eliminate some of the some of
the smaller fish, but not allof them. Just like we talked about,
you know, you might kind oftrying to figure out which ones you're
(01:42:38):
lure. All right, Forrest,I appreciate the call, buddy, you
know I do. Man good way, sir, audios. All right,
we're gonna take this break, Bob. As soon as we get back.
I want to hear your story aswell. On the way out of Timber
Creek down there, friends would FMtwenty three fifty one, about three four
miles west of the Gold Freeway.Very easy to find, twenty seven holes
(01:42:59):
of absolute fun, beautiful golf courseyou can go play any day you want
to go down there when they're openand not soaking wet or anything. Today,
I think it's gonna be a gorgeousday for golf. They are very
proudly offering now the JJ Woods GolfPerformance Center. I got an email from
JJ by the way, a coupleof days ago, and I'm going to
try to get him on the showto talk about what he's bringing to timber
(01:43:24):
Creek, to give you an ideawhy if you're down that way, that's
a good place to go fix yourgame whatever's broken in it. And Lord
knows all of us who are notwho don't have a tea time at a
gust to today, have plenty wecan fix in our golf, in our
golf play. Timber Creek Golf Clubdot com is the website, set yourself
(01:43:44):
to tea time. They're getting peopleout all day long today, I'm sure.
And because the Masters is on,yeah, maybe be a little easier
to get out timber Creek Golf Clubdot com. That's timber Creek Golf Club
dot com. We are Sports Talkseven ninety. Listen online at Sports seven
ninety dot com. Now more DougBike, Well, no, no,
(01:44:08):
no, I got to go talkto Bob's. Bob is sitting there very
patiently holding what's up, Bob,Doug, I got plenty of time if
you need to do some No,you're good. What's your tea time today?
I can't play for a while.I've been having some hard trouble,
so no stuck to the couch. But I need to have you do me
a favorite? Should do me anadam a favorite? The poor guy asked
(01:44:31):
her. I says, wouldn't youget to go fishing or coming? He
says, I don't have time. Please take him fishing one day. Yeah,
I'm sure he'd love it. Anyhow, I was listening to forest and
I got a little story about likethat myself. It's been many, many
years ago. I take Fake towny, you had only been open about a
year or two, probably two yearsor more, and we're fishing a buzzards
(01:44:56):
roost and I hooked a monster bass. She come up out of the water,
the gills a flaring, and Doug, I just stood there and looked,
my buddy's going real real well.We got her up to the side
of the boat and he reached overand grabbed the line and pop, there
she goes. Two weeks later,a lady in the same location called of
(01:45:17):
twelve nine, and I'm sure itwas the same fish. Oh beautiful,
but that's my story. And I'msure everybody out there has at least one
fish, and I'm like for it. I have a ten eight and this
fish like you said, pity.Yeah, most beautiful fish I've ever seen.
You know, you see him onTV where they come up there,
(01:45:41):
absolutely something. I just wanted toshare that with you. What are your
thoughts as somebody who's got a bigone that got away like that on all
this forward looking stuff where you canjust watch the fish eat the lore.
You know, I say, wewere using ten inch motor oil green worms,
(01:46:02):
and I say, anything you throwat him, if they're gonna eat
eat. I caught a fifty sixinch redfish once on little fishes, and
I'm sure you know what they do. Yeah, double tandem, double tandem
down a bottle of pocket. Tookme about forty five minutes to landa but
I'm sure, but don't hit anything. I'd even caught mullet on little fishies.
(01:46:25):
Yeah, wow, which is hardto believe. Yeah, I'm sure
everybody. I'd like to hear people'sstory if you don't mind her. You've
got the Master's going and everything nuts, and you know what, let me
change this oub too little. Youknow, I got so tired of this
and about tiger Wood this and tigerWood that, because I'm a Jack Nillis
fan one and but you know what. It was so good to follow him
(01:46:48):
a little bit this week. Youknow, I was really rooting for him
little, if you will, becausehe legend, well he's a legend,
and he's turned into a good dadto Charlie, which I like, Oh
yeah, something he already is somethingHoly cow. Yeah. But I just
(01:47:09):
you know, there for years Ididn't want him to break jacks record,
and then all the trouble we wentto. But now looking back, I
was a little selfish. The guy'sphenomenal. There's no infans or buts about
it. Changed the game with allforever. There's no question about Yeah.
(01:47:30):
Yeah, I hope you get better. Man care, Yeah, you take
care of yourself. Take him fishing? Okay, I think I will.
I see, all right, Adamwhen we go on fishing, man,
what week are you off? That'sa good point. Yeah, five a
Monday off. I'm gonna have tofind a place around here really close.
(01:47:51):
Yeah, we'll figure something out. There's gotta be all you gotta have you
Have you ever caught a fish?I can't recall I have before. No,
Okay, it probably may be fourin my life. Four fish four
or five? Oh my god, that would be a bad hour for me.
Okay, yeah, let's get you. So, what's the biggest fish
you've ever caught? I probably catfishout to go for Mexico. Something big,
(01:48:15):
big, maybe like seven inches orthat's it. Okay, yeah,
we can beat that. We candefinitely beat that. I'll find a spot
somewhere where we can go catch youa fish at least a foot long.
Holy cow, that shouldn't be toohard. Yeah, and then you can
just rate when somebody says, haveyou ever caught a fish? Yeah?
(01:48:35):
I caught one longer than a foot? Then does that count? Yeah?
It counts. Every fish counts.I can still get excited catching fish that
are six inches long, if it'sit's on a fly rod, or maybe
with a bunch of little kids anda couple of cane poles. There's all
kinds of ways to catch fish. But for our purposes, I think I
(01:48:57):
will have you using different equipment, different lure, and we'll see if we
can't get you a pretty decent bathssomewhere once the weather gets right and the
water gets right, and if Ican with confidence take you out to this
little golf course lake eye Fish, because I'm pretty sure that if it gets
anywhere halfway like it used to be. It'll be as close to a guarantee
(01:49:20):
as I can find for you, fair enough. Oh yeah, a bass
is perfect too. Yeah, oneI've always wanted to catch. Okay,
well, we can make that happen. I could take you down to Buffalo,
or not Buffalo, but Braise Bioand catch you a grasscarp about a
foot and a half long, ifyou wanted to do that. But it's
kind of you have to stand inthe water, so it's kind of nasty.
Sometimes, my buddy Joe Dogg andI, when we were writing at
(01:49:44):
the paper together many many years ago, would would take off after lunch or
after we would get our deadlines metsometimes, and there was a place we
could park in an apartment complex parkinglot and then walk down to Brai's Bio
with our fly rods, and we'dgo down there and catch those things on,
little little flies that stayed up onthe surface, little ants and just
(01:50:09):
kind of different little bugs. Andthese poor carp have these big old fat
lips, and they would come upand try to eat that bait, and
their mouths were just pushing so muchwater that as they'd try to close their
mouth around the lure the little fly. It would the water would push it
out in front of them, andit was like the old movie clips of
(01:50:30):
somebody kicking their hat down the streettrying to reach over and pick it up.
It was kind of funny. Wecaught plenty of them seven one three,
two, one two five seven ninety. Email me Dugpike at iHeartMedia dot
com. Let's see what Matsuyama cando going into I think it's three thereon.
Now he's got the club down andthe shot is away. He seems
(01:50:53):
to like it. He's eyeballing itpretty good, and it is not bad.
He's on the wrong tier and theball is rolling back away from the
hole. He needed to hit itabout maybe three yards farther. That one's
not gonna get lost like some ofthem do, and it's not going to
roll backward into a lake. Buthe got punished for being six feet short.
(01:51:15):
Ear fowler out of the bunker fromone ninety six on two? What
was that? That's a hot miss, probably, and yeah he's not even
oh wow, better shot than Ithought. Actually, that's not entirely bad.
He's gonna have a difficult putt, but he'll be all right. All
right, let's take a little breakhere. On the way out, I'll
tell you about Carter's Country again.A reminder first that they run these concealed
(01:51:39):
carry classes every other weekend, onceon a Friday or Saturday, and then
two weeks later on a Sunday, and then two more weeks later back to
Friday or Saturday again. Well,I can't get Friday out of my mind
for some reason. They are classeswhere in the classroom portion This is the
most important part really these days, with the laws way they are about it's
(01:52:00):
you can carry your guns in manyplaces even without a concealed carry permit.
However, you need to know thelegality of having that gun on you,
and when and where you can carryit, when you can't carry it,
when you should and should not drawin or fire that gun of yours.
(01:52:23):
Let's try. It's supposed to bethe last resort to your safety. Really,
you don't want to. You don'twant to just brandish that thing if
somebody makes you mad. And thecourse in this classroom session will teach you
when and how to conduct yourself whenyou're carrying, so that you remain within
(01:52:43):
the law as it's written. Now. The proficiency test afterward. Everybody's got
to pass that as well to getthat card. Proficiency test is not that
hard, and if you're worried aboutit, take a lesson before you take
the class, and then go upthere confidently after that classroom session and poke
a few holes in that target. It's about the size of a poster board
(01:53:05):
out at twenty yards. That's allyou've got to be able to hit to
pass the test, and hopefully thatwill give you the knowledge and the skills
to hope you never have to doit, but to defend yourself for somebody
else someday. Gunsm and hunting stuffat their stores and online. Now that
(01:53:26):
the online presence of Carter's Country hasbeen greatly improved over the past six or
eight years and is really really good. Just about anything in the store you
can buy and have shipped right toyour door. Carterscountry dot Com is the
website. Go check it out.Carterscountry dot Com. Your Rockets and Astros
live here. We are Sports Talkseven ninety. The conversation continues this as
(01:53:51):
the Doug Fike Show. I justtook a look at the email. I
didn't just take a look, butI'm just gonna talk about it that David
sent me in regard to a differentcase that involves that involves this doctrine by
(01:54:12):
which what is it called open fieldsdoctrine, by which law enforcement can come
on your property and pretty much dowhatever they want without a warrant, without
probable cause. And this is thecase over in Man. Where is it
(01:54:32):
give me the state? It's indog going it. I'm not seeing the
state unfortunately, and it doesn't mentionit up high in the story. I'll
scroll down. It's over on theeastern side of the country. I want
to say Virginia maybe, and I'lltrip over here in a second. But
(01:54:53):
at the bottom line is this manhas filed a lawsuit because during turkey season,
game wardens dressed in in like gillysuits and went onto his property and
(01:55:15):
took one of his game cameras andhave since see Virginia, That's what I
thought, New Kent County, Virginia. This guy lives on thirty acres and
he was and it's heavily posted withno trespassing signs. And back this past
(01:55:39):
April, I believe, opening dayof their turkey season there, he killed
a turkey on his property about sevenforty five in the morning, logged it
using the department's official mobile app,and then his turns out he found out
that his father and his brother, who were hunting on separate private properties,
(01:56:00):
had been confronted by game wardens. That same morning. His brother was ticketed
for allegedly hunting over bait. Insiredattorney to contest that ticket. The bottom
line is the wardens took his cameraand then took out the memory card and
are, according to what I readhere, have told him that they are
(01:56:26):
basically looking over all the images thathe's ever taken on that camera to see
if he's done anything wrong. Sothat that's a rough one. He's never
gotten a ticket in his life,he says. And there's a there's a
lot of hullaballoo over there over this. He's pretty upset that they just kind
(01:56:48):
of marched on to his place andtook his camera. I don't know,
I don't know it. Yeah, the County Sheriff's Department. He just said,
hey, somebody stole my camera, and then they confirmed the Sheriff's department
confirmed that the Department of Wildlife Resourceshad taken the device. It says here,
(01:57:14):
but there's just a lot more. There's a lot more to this,
and I hope we're not becoming asociety where where law enforcement can just start
gathering up stuff and arbitrarily looking atit and reading it and doing whatever they
want to do to see if theycan find something you did wrong, without
(01:57:39):
any reason to suspect that you've doneanything wrong. I don't know it.
That's a tough one. Once again. I'm on the side of game wardens
who have to they have to havesome access so that they can find somebody
doing something wrong. But to startyanking cameras off of private property and then
(01:58:02):
going through all the images to seeif they can find something, and this
guy's camera apparently had thousands of imageson digital stuff. I'm gonna go talk
to Brian here real quick. What'sup, Brian? How you doing that?
I'm good man. What kind ofsubject is this? What are you?
(01:58:23):
Well, you're gonna t You're gonnathrow my whole audience for a big
loop when you when you reveal whatyou want to talk about, go ahead.
Yeah, Well, this is kindof like a tradition with me.
Tiger paths on Memorial Day I alwayswalk on usually about like eighty is known.
I walk all to two miles onthe road on the settle Back Lake
(01:58:45):
World from Highway, want tint andI walked back the other I toak some
ice. I tak the rocks toeyes from the dam and uh, let
the sun kind of do the trickand I open up the way. And
I'm always the first one in fishingevery year. Wow. Yeah, I
always do really good. I meanwe're talking huge browns. I like that.
(01:59:11):
I'm the first one to fish itevery year. Good for you.
You know, when you open upthat ice, all of a sudden comes
out and they all come to thatinto the lake because they haven't had that
yet. Awesome. Yeah, Iwould imagine cash mask rout it you get
out and about tw that's not bad. What you big? What do you
(01:59:32):
use for on those big browns?I don't even they I use the lure
lure? Well that's a cast master. Oh just a good old fashioned spoon.
Huh yeah, well, nothing wrongwith those, boy. I've caught
many a speckled trout on those aswell. Uh they hit it almost every
time I threw it out there foryou. Yeah, well they haven't.
(01:59:56):
You know, they haven't been fishedall year, and they've been under the
ice all year. You break it, olden boy, they're come and trust.
Oh man, that's nice. Ilike that idea. Well, thanks,
man, I appreciate you. Howbig a brown pardon? How big
of browns do you catch? Ohyeah, that's a good size. That's
(02:00:18):
about just skillet, won't it.Oh? Yeah, yeah, Because I'm
I'm not in Houston anymore. Imoved to a sporkson of that. I
know. Yeah, I remember talkingto you a long time ago about that
when you moved out there. Andsounds like you've got pretty well dialed in
now. Huh oh yeah, it'sawesome. Well I'm tired of being retired,
(02:00:39):
but that part's really cool. Yeah, that is cool. Well,
thanks man. It's good to hearfrom you, Brian, it really is.
And I uh, let's go tireman. I threw I threw a
wild bed out there. Man.You got like one hundred and fifty of
one man, only need to abouteight shots. Yeah, there you go,
(02:01:00):
all right before right, Yes,sir, yes, sir? Okay,
Joe, great talking to you, bro. Yeah, YouTube Brian,
and enjoy navalla juke there, I'llsee audios all right. Yeah, holy
oh, somebody almost made a biglong putt there and now it's rolled out
about six feet. That's no fun. That's Masiyama again. There's not a
whole lot else going on, apparently. I'm only seeing him and Ricky Fowler
(02:01:26):
back and forth. At some point, surely somebody else is going to tee
off and play around them. Ithink there's two or three groups in front
of them, and bound to bea couple more behind them now on the
golf course, but I'm not seeingthem. Yeah, back to Nevada,
I've been out there. I wasin Las Vegas for the very first I
think it was called bash Us orsomething like that, the first tournament that
(02:01:48):
offered a one hundred thousand dollars firstplace price. And there were three hundred
and fifty teams entered in this thing, two person teams, and it was
on Lake Mead, which is morethan one hundred miles long, and some
of these guys were running. Thereare actually a set of locks on that
(02:02:08):
lake, and they were running allthe way up to the locks and then
through the locks and even farther up, just trying to catch a couple of
bass. And I want to say, out of like one hundred and fifty
teams, it was. There wereprobably sixty or seventy of those teams that
never waited a fish in three daysof fishing. And it was somewhat funny
(02:02:31):
actually, because they were allowing themedia to go fishing with just kind of
some locals or maybe some semi prosaround there. And we put in at
the same place those guys put in, and we spend most of our time
catching stripe bass, which was alot of fun. But we also did
(02:02:51):
some bass fishing within within probably twomiles of the boat ramp. While these
other guys were running an hour anda half to get just to where they
were gonna fish. They'd have liketwo hours to fish in their their secret
water, which wasn't any secret, and then have to turn around and run
all the way back and have tostop and refuel to get back. And
(02:03:15):
that just made no sense. Andwe were catching bass, like I said,
within two miles, not a lotof them, but considering that close
to half the field didn't catch youany in three days of fishing, I'd
say we'd look pretty good. MightEve Myrnachek who knows seven one three two
one two five seven ninety email onme. Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot Com.
We'll take this last break of theprogram. We'll come back. Take a
(02:03:36):
look at the leaderboard, Roy McElroy, Kamilavi Jagas going out in about two
or three minutes. It looks liketake a look at the master's leaderboard one
more time. It's gonna look justlike it did this morning because the leaders
aren't out. And then we'll buttonup and I'll tell you what we're gonna
be doing tomorrow. We'll take alittle break here, we'll be right back
to Doug Pike Show on Sports Talkseven ninety. We are Sports Talck seven
(02:04:01):
nineties, Houston Sports where you gowith an iHeartRadio now now get more,
Doug. I got a couple ofemails, and one hundred percent agree.
We're hearing one sided stories from alot of these cases about open fields,
acts and whatnot. And I don'twant anybody to rush to judgment and think
(02:04:24):
that either side is right or wrong, because, like I said, we're
only hearing little, tiny pieces, and it's important to remember that because the
story that's written by one side doesn'tnecessarily jive with the other side, or
otherwise there wouldn't be any there wouldn'tbe any issue to resolve. Let me
(02:04:45):
go see what's on Jeff's mind. Here, there we go, what's up
Jeff morning. Well, if thisgoes to court without being dismissed, and
we'll get the story, that's whatused to happen, at least that's what
I saw. Would you explain whata gilly suit is? I know with
Marine Corps snipers and a special Forcesused, but that's pretty the authority.
Yeah, Well, are these guyscall prior service? Do they have some
(02:05:08):
sort of experience? Are they dressingup like the bad guys and going on
to somebody's property like they're going onpatrol in northern Vietnam or something? Dressing
up like bad guys? These suitshave been used by turkey hunters and deer
hunters and every other kind of hunterfor a long long time to just camouflage
(02:05:29):
yourself out there. And and wellthe probably that's what this guy called what
they were in. Who knows whatthey were I don't know. I'm not
gonna I'm not going to fair enough. You can. You can go and
get where he's hanging on the hangarin a supply store. You don't necessarily
have to go to military spar no, okay, no, these things have
been available for the better part offifteen twenty years. Actually, some company
(02:05:51):
sent me one, probably thirty yearsago now, and it was so bulky
and so heavy that it just I'drather be out there in a bright orange
jumpsuit than trying to try to findmy way through the woods. And I
can't imagine how many chiggers and tickswould end up on you if you were
(02:06:12):
just kind of slinking around in thewoods and those things. So no,
I'm good. I'm good camouflaging theway I've always camouflaged for hunting. Apps
went trapping on making a lot ofnoise where they really upset things, or
I guess I'm getting back to myquestion, or they just playing playing an
army while they're doing this. No, I you know, like like I
said, we don't know the otherside of the story. We don't know
(02:06:33):
why the game wardens did what theydid, but they don't just are I
don't think that they would just arbitrarily, you know, walk onto somebody's place
and go go grab his camera. And so until I hear both sides of
the story, I'm not gonna judge. There's just no way, you know,
(02:06:54):
I'm gonna sure, but I'm goingto err on the side of law
enforcement. I am because if theguy's done nothing wrong, he's got nothing
to worry about. True, andI know he feels like this was a
great intrusion on his property. Butbecause wardens are trying to do things that
are trying to solve issues that havebeen done by people who certainly don't want
(02:07:17):
to get caught, and they're notdoing it in public where there are a
bunch of cameras. They've got tothey've got to witness something that can help
them make a case. And ifthey felt like they needed to do that,
and they can, I'm sure theycan make a case for it and
it'll all come out in the wash, and you know, it just is
what it is. Well keep upwith it if you can. I know
(02:07:40):
you have other things, but Iknow you trust the game wardens in Texas,
So at least that's reassuring. Yeah, I do, I really do.
I appreciate that, Jeff, Thankyou, Thank you. B Yeah,
I've I've been around enough game wardensand known enough of them to the
ones I knew they were very theyknew the law very well, and they
(02:08:05):
knew how hard, it was insome cases to make a case. So
they try to gather the best informationand evidence they can, and that's why
they're so methodical. When they comestop you and want to check your license
on a dove hunt, for example, they need to check your license,
They need to check your bag,They need to check your plug and your
(02:08:26):
shotgun and all these things, andif you just stand there and let them
do it. They used to comeinto my waterfowl spreads, not every week,
but every couple of weeks. Somebodywant of them would wander out there
and ask me a couple of questionsand ask all my hunters to show them
their licenses and the plug, shotgunand who's ducks and geese or those.
(02:08:48):
And it was really refreshing to seethem there, because there were also people
out there who were doing things wrong, and I didn't want them taking the
birds that my hunters and I mightbe able to get if they weren't there.
So it just kind of works out. Seven one three, two,
one two five seven nine. Hegot time for another call or too,
(02:09:09):
if you want to do that.Let me check my emails real quick to
make sure I don't miss anything onthe way out, because it's a long
way to tomorrow. Okay, Ican do that. I can do that.
Please copy this for me. Standby, I need to make a
copy of something for a guy who'shere and m'st see if I can find
(02:09:31):
the printer. This is very important, very important for him, and it
should be printing for him. That'sgood. One of the guys who works
our Astro stuff. I wish heworked with the Astros to make them pitch
better, because we are having notrouble scoring runs. And the reason I
didn't get home until almost eleven twentylast night is because between the two teams
(02:09:56):
they put up twenty runs. Twentyruns, Astro scored eight and lost twelve
to eight. There's just the onlyreason you can give up twelve runs is
if the pitching isn't up to snuff. And I'm it's so early to try
and even say anything about Joy Spotta, because he's been right at knocking on
(02:10:22):
the door of the position he's innow for a very long time, and
I want to give him all thebenefit of the doubt I can, but
holy cow, a couple of timeslately he's left guys in so long,
and I know the bullpen is stretched. I know that, and I know
our starters. We've got a coupleof really good starters missing right now.
(02:10:45):
But man, when a guy's givenup three runs in one inning and has
got base runners still out there withone or no outs, maybe just think,
just maybe think about maybe think aboutyanking him out of there. I
felt pretty bad for JP Frantz lastnight. He was playing. He was
pitching pretty well first couple of innings, and then in the third he just
(02:11:09):
got rocked the second time through thelineup. I talked about that at the
very beginning of the show. Heabsolutely was getting rocked and just keep throwing,
Jp, keep throwing. Oh well, yeah, I knew this,
Scott, and I didn't want toget into the nitty gritty of it all,
but I did understand that. Idid understand that, and maybe we'll
(02:11:33):
touch on that tomorrow. It's kindof a personal note between something he added
to the to the story that wewere talking about a minute ago, and
there was there was something about that, Oh, here's Mark over in George.
What's he looking at? Could bea useful opportunity for pro fisherman to
write to other fishermen. You know, that's not a bad idea Mark Mark
(02:11:58):
used to live here. Now he'sover all the in Georgia. Talked about
maybe using that forward looking so onarto look at the bottom topography and compare
what it looks like on the surfaceand then start learning about habitat and help
new fishermen understand that. That's itwould be a great teaching tool, but
(02:12:20):
the people who are buying it andusing it are finding it maybe more of
a money generator form, especially inthese tournaments. If you don't have that,
what do what? Oh? Ishe bring him on right now?
What is up? Dan? What'sup? Buddy? How you doing?
(02:12:41):
Are you not coming in here again? Yeah? You know it's another road
show because this one. As Italk to you right now, I think
you can probably even hear them alittle bit in the background. Got the
grounds crew on the field. They'regetting the field ready to go. The
roof is on, which you know. I heard Matt Thomas and Rossville Realt
there talking about this yesterday. AndI remember coming here when it was in
(02:13:03):
ron Field. I mean, wehad some tickets all the way back then,
and I remember when we first gotto the new home here, which
it's still considered new to me.Even though it's been here about twenty five
years. Is that this time ofthe year you would have open roof games.
Yeah, and you know we gotthe retractable roof, let's use it.
(02:13:26):
I mean, this is the timeof the year where we're you know,
we'd love to have the roof open. And I understand. Oh the
sound everything like that. Look, when you've been on a stretch like they've
been, crack a few eggs,do something. I mean, that's that's
the thing. Hey, open theroof. Maybe today they go off for
ten runs and you say, okay, hey, let's let's have that darn
(02:13:46):
roof open every once in a while. But while the humidity is low and
we're in the high seventies, loweighties, boy, let's enjoy that.
Weather man. Good heavens, DanMatthews, we put up eight yesterday and
didn't even get a sniff. Youknow, yeah, I heard you talking
about starting pitching. That's been alittle bit of an issue. But hopefully
the stopper is on the mount.Today. It's a Renel Blanco day,
(02:14:09):
and good we're two for two onRenel Blanco days. A really good one
in there. Just keep ice inhis arm and wheeling him out there every
other day if we have to fora while. Huh. Well, I
mean let's just hopefully, you know, make sure he can get through the
fifth inning. I mean, problemhere is, you know, and this
is something I'm going to talk abouton the show today, is you know
(02:14:31):
we've had stretches in such a youngseason already where the first series couldn't get
hit with a runner in scoring position. Yep, second series it was either
feast or famine with the runs. But you know, this most recent stretch
that they've been on, starting Mondayin Arlington against the Rangers, is starting
pitching has been a town fall. You haven't even been able to sniff the
(02:14:56):
fifth inning. Gosh, that's horrible. All right, well, I'll leave
that up to you. I'm gonnaget out of your way now. Dan
Matthews coming up next from minute Maywhere for some reason the roof is still
closed, but the phone lines willbe open if you want to join him
in a little bit. Who's yourpick for the Masters? Real quick?
(02:15:18):
I'm gonna go with you know,I think Colin Marcolla might put it to
union striking distance. And you know, my my initial pick of saying that
we could possibly see a repeat champion. That's not looking too good, I
think, But now it's this. You know. Former champion is Springton Patrick
Reid. Yes, Sir at evenPark. All Right, I gotta run.
(02:15:39):
Dan's up next on Sports Talk sevenninety. Thanks for listening. I'll
be back tomorrow morning at eight.Audio
