(00:01):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by American Shooting Centers Guns
Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now here's Doug Pike. Got'll be
a big, big day around here, quite a big day. I would
say. We've got all kinds ofthings going on, and I have to

(00:22):
I have to make mention because Ineglected somehow. I don't know how we
got pasted it except I got wrappedup in the outdoors and in that fake
story about chronic wasting disease jumping tohumans, and in that video, that
horrific video of the people yanking bearcubs out of a low hanging tree.

(00:46):
All of that drew my attention awayfrom something very important. It's going on
right here in our own town, and that is the Chevron Championship. It
got delayed by the weather yesterday late, so they've still got to run out
and fit a few holes of thethird round. Let me see how many
holes they've got to get through.I don't think it's a bunch what I'm

(01:06):
looking at now. Oh. Ido hate the way they put these things
together. It is just so sofrustrating when you can't see the whole leaderboard.
I'm trying to get the leaderboard tocome up and it doesn't want to
and I really don't know why theyput it up this way. Few full
leaderboard. Let's see how that worksout. Fingers crossed. There we go.

(01:32):
So, yeah, fifteen fourteen. It looks like maybe some of the
women might have four or five holesto play. Four holes I think is
about all. And once they getthrough that, they will rapidly turn that
course around and get the final roundstarted. There should be plenty of time
to get this complete fourth round done. Yeah, there should be. There

(01:55):
shouldn't be a problem with that.Where are we holding on? Let me
get back up here. Yeah, get that done today. There's not a
whole lot of golf left to beplayed. Brooke Henderson shot eight under par
yesterday and she now shares the lead. That's the good news. She shot
eight under. She was actually atnine at one point. Hi, you

(02:17):
run ru at ten under par. Also, that's where Brook is now.
Nellie Korda, who is She's kindof running hot on the women's on the
LPGA, the same way Scottie Scheffleris on the men's side. Tiathitical also

(02:38):
at ten under par and then Jennym alone at nine in fifth place,
ma Just Stark alone in six atseven under par, and then you got
three sixes and a handful of otherswho will be watching. Basically, they'll
get their rounds done and then getto watch Henderson rue Quorda anthetical come rolling

(03:04):
around the corner for the Probably,if I have to pick somebody, I
gotta pick Nelly Korda. It's kindof the same reason I picked I picked
Scotty Scheffler last week and the weekbefore that, the week before that.
The guy's just on fire. Andif he can put at all today,
he should. What he'll be inthe what he'll end up doing is winning
four out of his last five starts, and in that fifth start where he

(03:29):
didn't win, he finished second. He finished second. Fantastic run he's on.
We haven't seen that since Tiger didit years ago, probably what the
better part of twenty years ago now, when he really was on his tear
of averaging second place in all thetournaments he entered for several years, his

(03:52):
average finish was second place. That'spretty outrageous and crazy and pretty unbelievable really,
when you get right down to it, I'll talk about about that in
the nine o'clock hour. Looking atthe beach right now, if I can
get this photog or this video tocycle and kick back up, Yeah,

(04:13):
the beach front's not pretty, butat least it's not blowing like it was
yesterday evening. I started hearing thewind whipping through the trees, and it
just kept going and kept going whereI am in sugar Land. We didn't
get a horrible amount of rain.We didn't get really scary weather at all.
I heard, I heard some thunder. I was around probably three thirty

(04:40):
four thirty somewhere in that raine wokeme up banging around outside, but there
wasn't rain to go with it.Now. When I woke up and went
outside this morning to come in here, there was definitely we probably had about
a half inch of rain, bemy guess, but it never was strong
enough that I could hear it beeating on the house. It never was

(05:01):
violent enough outside that I thought Ibetter run out and move my my vehicle
back away from the basketball goal thatwe need to get rid of, because
my son didn't when he was little, the driveway seemed like a pretty good
place for him to hone his basketballskills now that he's taller than me,
and my driveway isn't a half acreof concrete, it's it's h He hadn't

(05:27):
touched that. He hadn't even lookedat that basketball goal. If he gets
any taller, he's going to haveto duck underneath it to come through.
We've got to set at ten feetand it's it's there if he wants it.
But he's so focused on baseball nowwith a side order of golf,
that basketball is just kind of outof the it's out of the picture for
him. Seven one three two onetwo five seven ninety. Email me Doug

(05:51):
Pike at iHeartMedia dot com. Iasked yesterday, I don't know, No,
I want to get into this.Rick By sent me an email early
this morning. I think it waseither early this morning or late yesterday,
because it was the one that Isaw first. Yeah, just a little
while ago, just a few minutesago, fifteen minutes ago, said we

(06:12):
were talking about that group of peoplein an apartment complex who went and plucked
the bears out of the trees justto get selfies with them, which I
think is horrible. And I saidyesterday, and I still kind of believe
that there should be some sort ofcharge. You're just not supposed to do
that with wildlife. The same reasonyou don't pick up fawns, whitetailed fawns

(06:34):
in Texas when you find one allby Oh, the poor fawn, it's
all by itself. It's mother's abandonedit. No, it's mother has not
abandoned that fawn. That mother isout trying to find some clover to eat
so it can produce good milk andraise a strong cat or a strong fawn
into a grown up white tailed deer. That just keeps the life cycle going.

(06:58):
And I really was rick ass o, because what are you gonna charge
them with? Well, I harassment, maybe cruelty, perhaps something along those
lines would be appropriate. And thenwho decides what is a chargeable offense and

(07:19):
what is just an innocent interaction?I think if you pick up an animal
and you call a rehab facility.Baby squirrels they hit the ground all the
time this time of year. Whynot all the time. It's not like
it's raining. Baby squirrels. ButI have neighbors who have found them.
I have friends who have found them, especially out in sugar Land. We've

(07:41):
got a million oak trees and ahalf a million squirrels out there, And
what do I do? They callme, what do I do? What
do I do with this baby squirrelI found? Just leave it alone,
get away from it. Leave italone. You don't have to bring it
in. You don't have to gobuy an eye dropper and feed it milk
or anything like that. The momis probably not far away. And if
you if you leave that baby alone, she can get it back in the

(08:05):
nest. And that's what you're supposedto do with baby anything. Now,
if you if you're feeling warm andfuzzy and you want to call an animal
rehab sin and ask them to comeget this thing, a lot of times
they will, but I know ofit at least one case where a neighbor
called a place about a baby' squirreland they just said, put it back,

(08:26):
figure out where it came from.It didn't, it didn't run a
half a mile to get in youryard. Just kind of figure out where
it came from. Put it backas close to there as you can.
Try not to handle it a wholelot and get a bunch of human sin
on it. That's never never goodfor the baby animals. Pardon me,
but then just let the let themom come back and get it, and
and care for baby birds the sameway once they're Once they fledge it and

(08:52):
hop out of the nest, takethat first awkward tumbling flight to the ground,
and try to figure it out fromthere. They're kind of on their
own, and if you leave themalone, they'll probably find something to eat,
they'll probably get a little bit stronger, and they'll probably fly away at
some point, unless the neighbor's catgets them. And that's another story we

(09:16):
could talk about sometimes. How manybirds, How many birds are killed every
year by not just stray cats, but by house cats. The house cats
instinctively want to kill stuff and bringit home. And most people who have
cats and allow those cats to gooutside know what I'm talking about. You

(09:39):
kind of wonder where your cat's beenfor the last few hours, and then
you look outside and it's dropping adead bird at the on the mat on
the door mat, or it's founda mouse, or it's found any number
of things. Little snakes. They'llbring those home too, and they're just
so proud and you're just so horrified. Birds are birds take a pretty strong

(10:01):
hit from cats in this country andaround the world to the tune of billions,
billions with a bee every year.So back to this bear with a
bee. The consensus yesterday was it'sa horrible thing. They shouldn't have done
it. They did this just totake pictures with these little bear cubs.

(10:22):
And Rick and I email back andforth, just very briefly trying to figure
out how the law books could handlethis. But actually, you know,
there may be a better way.If people are going to start grabbing bear
cubs out of trees, let's dowhat they say we should do with all

(10:43):
the other wildlife too. Just letnature take its course, let that mother
bear decide what the penalty should be. And I know that sounds horrible,
and oh my gosh, you're goingto get those people attacked. Well,
if you don't mess with the bearcubs, you won't get mess by the
bigger bear. And it's just assimple as that, it really is.

(11:03):
Leave them alone. Take a pictureof the little bears in the tree.
That's a way better picture, away better memory of that moment when you
actually got that close to the littleblack bear cubs in a tree. Take
a picture of them there. Idon't drag them out of the tree and
scare them to death. When youdrag a bear cub out of a tree,

(11:28):
that bear cub, that bear cubis going to have to be in
therapy for the rest of its lifebecause all it figured was that you were
going to eat it. That's theonly thing they know about bigger animals dragging
them away is that they're going tobe lunch. That's all that's in their
genetic makeup. There's no file inthat bears DNA memory banks for Oh no,

(11:52):
they're just taking me down to takea picture. Hold on, I'll
pose me, Let me straighten myfur. It's ridiculous. Leave wildlife alone.
Absolutely, unless you've got a poisonexcuse me, venomous snake in your
backyard and the kids are out playingor the pets are out, leave them
alone. If it's a snake,if it's a spider, if it's anything,

(12:13):
well you can you can mush ablack or a brown recluse spider if
you want to. I got noproblem. I got bitten by one of
those and that was horrible. Itwas horrible. I was in pain for
a long time. It swoll up, puffed up, it was on the
ring finger of my left hand, and I barely got my wedding band off
before that thing would have had tobe cut off, and it was.

(12:35):
It was a long time before that. He'll, all right, I gotta
take a little break here on theway out. I will tell you all
about Carter's Country and the the concealedcarry classes they still take care of for
people who want. It's not thatyou have to have that really anymore to
carry your guns in certain places, but if you go and get that classroom

(12:56):
session, that's critical to you knowingthe on where and when you are allowed
to actually draw, d or firethat weapon of yours to defend yourself or
your family or other people or whoeverit might be. You absolutely positively will
benefit from taking that course. Andif you're worried about not being proficient enough

(13:18):
to pass the course, then justget a couple of lessons before you take
off and get up in there, because all it's going to do is ask
you to All they're going to dois ask you to hit a poster board
roughly at twenty yards. That's It'slike, okay, can you hit a
refrigerator a little mini fridge? Ifyou can hit a mini fridge at twenty
yards you can pass the proficiency test. And I'm not talking about it just

(13:41):
a little never mind. The bottomline is they've got them every other Saturday
and Sunday, every other weekend, and they are doing that at that Spring
location. So after you finish yourI think it's four hours in the classroom.
After you wrap that up, yougo straight outside take the PFER test
and that gets you the certification. You need to let yourself and any law

(14:05):
enforcement you might encounter know that youhave been through that course and you know
what you're doing and you're there tohelp. You're one of the good guys.
Guns Ammo and Hunting Stuff at allthe Carter's Country locations at online that's
the boy you talk about taking careof a good online site. They have
made it better and better. Sincethe Internet came along, Carter's Country has

(14:28):
been working to improve and modify itsonline presence and they've done a fantastic job
of that too. Guns Ammo andHunting Stuff Carterscountry dot Com for sixty plus
years. Carterscountry dot Com are sportsStock seven ninety Houston Sports where you go
with iHeartRadio. Now now get more. Doug, Well, we just finished

(14:52):
talking about baby bears and baby squirrelsand baby birds and all these things.
And on the callscreener, I knowDave's on the line, and I'm gonna
go im gonna click it in justa second day. Hang on. But
what I'm reading here it says Davenorth Side Baby Animal's Cookbook. I had
to ask Melvin and Adams said thosetwo aren't connected, are they? And

(15:16):
and no, thank goodness, they'renot. So I'll go ahead and take
the call. Well, oh it'snot working, Adam. You gotta help
me fix this. I want toput him back on hold. And you
guys got to click him up.TikTok, tik talk tik. There we
go. What's up? Dad?You got me? Now? Hey,
I think I'm here. That's funny. Oh no, no, no,

(15:45):
no, wo animal, Yeah, that's not it. The house is New
Orleans, man, If you didn'tlearn that first off, And that was
the most agression guitar one oh one, wasn't it? Yes, sir,
hey, and don't touch baby animals. And I don't mean to sound mean
about it, but my dad hetaught us because number one, when you

(16:07):
put your human scent on that baby, the mama may rejected Yep, that's
one reason. Yeah, how manymore do we need to get their attention?
Dave, I don't know. Themama might go to do that.
Yeah, let me tell you hownot to do that. Remember when I
told you that I was going fromthirteen seventy four five to thirteen seventy four

(16:29):
in the National Force, and thatbaby deer was out there in the middle
of that hot ass all that onehundred degrees. Yeah, I grabbed,
I grabbed my towel, picked itup, took it over to the shades,
you know, and the shadows overthere, and the mama was running
back and forth on the backside ofthe fence. So I just dropped it
off and then woldly backed up becausethey you know, she's gonna protect that

(16:52):
night. Yeah, he You don'twant to get kicked by deer either.
I don't. I don't know.I don't know that. I've heard many
stories of doe who's coming out toprotect their fawns. But you can rest
assured that if that fawn starts bleedingand making noise and giving it all that
that mom is gonna hear it,and she's gonna be She's gonna have eyes

(17:12):
on you anyway, all right, hey, and then look on your Facebook
page. I sent you I gota nineteen sixty eight Scandinavian cookbook. Holy
cow. Yeah. It was atthe American Legion over here and they're giving
out the books. And I sentyou a picture of Scandinavia, and I'm
looking at it, and here's Sweden, Finland, Norway, there's Poland,

(17:36):
where my family came from. Andthen it shows you pictures of where everything
around there. You got a cod, you got salmon, you got trout,
yep, you got lobsters, yougot crawfish on this side in Finland
and anyway, Hey, wasn't thatOh? And then you got the rank

(17:56):
here up here at the top.Oh. And then it's the that goes
through, not the equator, it'stoo high. The Arctic Circle. There
you go, there, you go. There, that's a big difference.
Big. No, it's okay, man, it's early in the morning.
Heck, you're entitled. Have anothersip of coffee. Then we'll get her
done. No, no, no, but I'll tell you what. I'll

(18:18):
tell you what, and then guesswhat. My uncle's probably served over around
there too. You know how aboutthis. I've been to Sweden I did
a fishing trip to Sweden years ago, and that was an amazing experience.
The fishing was so so to beperfectly honest, and I mean we caught
some good fish. That's the onlyplace in the on the planet I've actually

(18:41):
caught fish called pike, ironically. But it was really cool and a lot
of fun. And I got tospend two nights of our trip in a
cottage that's owned by the King andQueen of Sweden, which was pretty cool.
On the Morham River, I stoodinside of a barn that was built

(19:03):
i want to say, like inthe early seventeen hundreds and it's still standing,
which is pretty good testament to theirbuilding capabilities. It was just a
fascinating trip. It was amazing.Man, I'm looking on here. They
got a lot of rivers that gothrough there. Oh yeah, and then
and then and then you got theGolf of Finland, the Gulf of Messing

(19:26):
and man all around there. Yeah, I mean, hey, you know,
and then I've heard all about it. But hey, they did a
lot of pickle soundmon. Oh theydried a lot of stuff too. Yeah,
you know they do. You know, got to last a long time
once winter comes there they can't doa whole lot. So they've got to
get everything, you know, theirducks in a row to be fed basically

(19:48):
through winter. Now, when theydry it out, and they can just
just dry it out, they cantake it in the house or whatever.
They don't put it in refrigerator ornothing like jerky. At that point,
I gotta run. I gotta catchthree more Google. All right, man,
thanks Dave Audios. Okay, Ijust bailed. That's okay, thank
you. All right. Let mego get Rick. Oh wait, I

(20:11):
did promise one thing. Rick.Let me let me spend one minute explaining
to Dakota, who is asking viaemail through her dad, how to bank
fish in a pretty heavy wind. There's a couple of ways you can do
this. First of all, ifyou can find a place where you can
cast down wind, you probably throwthrow your bait a halfway across the river.

(20:32):
If you can't do that, youneed to add a little weight to
anchor that bait on the bottom.I'm presuming you guys are fishing for catfish
maybe this morning, and you doneed to anchor it with a little bit
more weight. But what you doto kind of balance that from the little
fish being scared when they go topick up a worm and it feels like
it weighs one hundred pounds. Isget your dad to rig a Carolina rig

(20:53):
and you could that way, youcan use that heavier weight and just leave
a little slack in your line eventhough the wind's gonna make it have a
kind of a big bow in it. And then when that line comes straight,
that means a fish has picked itup and it's kind of easing out
with that. Another way you cando kind of get an idea what's going
on, is put a barber stopperup your line. Let's say the water's

(21:15):
six feet deep where you're casting.Put a barber stopper at about ten or
twelve feet and throw out there andlet that bait with the weight on it
go all the way to the bottom. And then that little corkl slide up
your line to that barber stopper atsay ten feet, and there'll be some
slack, but you'll still be ableto see the court go down if a
fish grabs a bait and takes offwith it. A lot of ways,

(21:38):
the best thing to do is justkeep fishing and keep learning and keep trying
to figure things out. I knowyour dad and he's pretty good at what
he does too. But I'm gladyou called, or glad you wrote,
and I'm glad I could help out. I hope I did anyway, I
hope that makes some sense. Allright, let me go get Allan's been
waiting the longest, said, I'llget to Rick before we go to break
Allan. What's up, buddy?Hellen? Hello? Oh? Ellen?

(22:07):
Yeah? Okay? Did I dosomething wrong? Still waiting? I got
Oh? Okay, now you gotit? There we go, Allen?
You there? Now this is sothere you are, co Lee. This
is so complicated, this machinery ofours. Uh, the more computers they
put in here, the more, the more bulky they get. They think

(22:30):
they're fighting with each other and we'repaying the price. What's up, man?
Uh? Yeah, no big deal. Hey, I have two questions.
Uh down there behind island, youever been down there? You were
fished on the surf down there byHighland? Yeah, been a while.
You know where the road basically wherethe road ends, you gotta go left,

(22:51):
go to Highland and they just didyou know it's all wilderness after that?
Right? Okay? Okay? Uhyou say you they can see the
good now there. I mean, yeah, sure, this has been years
time. It hadn't been weeks sinceI was down there. It's been years,
honestly. So I'm not the rainingexpert on High Island surf fishing,

(23:11):
but yeah, I had a coupleof good trips down that way more than
a couple of years ago. Iwas just kind of figuring, maybe,
you know, once once the surffishing starts, you know, who knows.
I just liked it. I wasdown that area working a while back
to going. I was like, got y'all fired up. Pretty nice area.
Yeah, a little bit remote, you know, and I don't like

(23:32):
a lot of crowds, So yeah, fishing, I'm used fishing over there,
bottle over side, you know. You know, I'm just curious about
that. I would not once theweather settles out a little bit and we
get another good warm streak and thatsurf temperature pops up, I wouldn't.

(23:52):
Yeah, I don't even know rightnow that you can be the first person
to catch a fish out of oursurf up here this year may have already
happened. I'm not sure. I'msure, Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.
It's late April at this point,So yeah, there's a possibility.
However, we always tend the majorityof the fishing is gonna get better in
a month probably, So yeah, you can, you can. You can't

(24:18):
be first, but you can benext. Let's put it that way.
Yeah, so let me let meask you a semester quick. Uh uh
the lev Uh the Levy Golf. You know, I was watching the Masters.
Uh did did they invite some ofthem guys from Levy Golf into the
Masters? I don't remember. Yeah, Live Golf sent about I don't know,
six eight, ten guys and theythey qualified to be in that tournament

(24:42):
by past victory. There's all kindsof ways to get into the Masters.
It's not just a uh, sixguys sitting around the table pulling names out
of a hat. So yeah,a lot of them, a lot of
them will always be eligible. Nowthe Masters, I realize it's the Masters
is the their own baby, right, PGA can't tell them what to do

(25:03):
in since that's exactly right, Andthat's probably why they allowed some of the
Leavy guests come over and play, because I'm sure the PGA is not real.
You know, Phil Micholson ain't gonnabe the PGA's posted child anymore.
I'm sure. Yeah, they've kindof split the sheets at this point.
Yeah. Fuck unfortunately. So yeah, I'm just wondered about that. I
was wondering how that worked. Andhow's Levy going. Well, it's they

(25:26):
call it live Golf l IV andI'm sorry, yeah, fifty four Oh
oh oh gosh, So telling meI got a break. I'll bring that
back up a little bit later. How's that? Okay, sounds good.
I'll listen in. Thanks, dexabunch, I's see audios. All right,
Rick, you're gonna have to wait. I hate to do that to
you, but we got to doit. And all the way out,
I'm gonna tell you about timber CreekGolf Club. Speaking of golf, timber

(25:49):
Creek Golf Club twenty three fifty onedown in Friendswood, twenty seven holes,
great variety two and all these holesare different. They're beautiful. And one
thing I like about it. Iwas told this the very first time I
played down there. Every time,if you're new to timber Creek, stand
on the tea box, whichever teabox you're on, and just take ten

(26:10):
seconds to look at the hole. And if you've played any golf in your
life, you'll understand where the architectof that golf course wants you to hit
the ball. They're trying to getyou to hit it to a certain place
that's going to be your best landingarea. Now you can you can go
gung ho and try to try tostray off the path. But if you'll

(26:30):
just follow your gut, follow yourinstincts from from tee to fairway and try
to put it in as many fairwaysas you can. If you're having trouble
with that, go over to thejj Woods Golf Performance Center at timber Creek.
But yeah, it's it's a veryplayable twenty seven holes, and by
playable, I mean enjoyable. There'sno secrets. There's no trap, well

(26:52):
trap meaning bunker, Yeah, there'splenty of those, but there's not any
gotchas on this golf course. AndI like that. It's a nice,
fun, friendly place to go playsome golf or take a bunch of people
down and raise money for charity.Timbercreek goolf Club dot com is a website
FM twenty three fifty one, afew miles west of the Gold Freeway.
Timber Creek Golf Club dot com. This is Sports Talk seven ninety on the

(27:18):
Goal with iHeartRadio Friends. You've gotto try. The conversation continues. This
as the Doug type show. Let'sgo ahead and click Ricky in here too.
He waited through the break. Igotta take care of that, Rick
Byes. What's up? How areyou man? Good? I want to
clarify our conversations. I'm not anadvocate for any law. Sure, I

(27:45):
understand that. I'm kind of yeah, I'm kind of with you on that.
Like I said, letting nature, letting nature be judge jury and maul
or if it if necessary. Well, I think if there was a law,
I mean the ball and I'm gonnacome back to this and then that'll
be my end real quick. Butyou know, if there was such a

(28:06):
law that was passed, and that'sa broad term when we start saying law,
sure you know, I mean atthat point the classified saction in the
green sheet, all of those personalinjury lawyers, the price of their ads
going a triple. Of course, you don't have you know, animal you

(28:26):
know, cruelty lawyers all in there. You know, have you seen somebody
spinkered on with the newspaper, youknow or whatever but anyway, I think
we have enough laws that really, you know, aggravated on life and make
it complicated, and it can makeit life very expensive. You don't benefit.

(28:48):
So that all said, yesterday youwere leaning towards the law, But
let's take that one step further, and I'm gonna ask you you are king
of the land now in this conversation. I love these Oh you I make
the rules. I played this gamebefore you make the rules. Is this

(29:08):
gonna become a criminal offense or isthis gonna become a civil offense? This
would be civil like the restitution fortaking game. Whether you're found guilty or
not of a criminal offense, youif you're kind of caught red handed with
one hundred white masks in the backof your pickup truck, and whether you

(29:29):
are found guilty of the criminal chargeof taking over the limit, you still
owe the state restitution for taking thoseanimals out because they belong to everybody,
and the animals that those girls werepulling out of the trees that belonged to
the state of North Carolina or SouthNorth Carolina, and for some reason they

(29:51):
just saw fit to yank them outof the trees and take pictures with them,
and there's got to be some sortof repercussion somehow, Rick, and
I think just public ridicule maybe enough, I hope to teach them that what
they did was wrong, because whatthey did was wrong, and they can't
they can't just be allowed to walkaway and feel good about what they did.

(30:15):
That I think sends a really poormessage that's been sent for the past
ten or fifteen years to wagh toomany people, way too many times that
whatever they do is okay, Anda lot of times it's not okay.
What track I've got you right intothe trap? Here here it is,

(30:38):
here's the trap. We've already gotalong a book, and it's just what
she just said. It's enforced bythe Fishing game and the state police.
Yeah, I E game wardens. We don't need to go knee jerking around
thaw another law out there. Ifthere's, like my example to you,

(31:00):
some box turtle me in the middleof the road, there's a copp sitting
there, and I about to gotake my foot or a snapping turtle and
kicking now the road where all ofa sudden the sireens come on, And
I mean, who is going tofind and write just what I'm listening to
you in the emails. Who isgoing to find that punishment? But anyway,
we already have the laws on thebot. We don't need them more

(31:21):
long. Okay, there you go. Is this fun or what? Yeah?
Okay, yeah, I don't knowthat. The problem I have with
North Carolina is the latest story Isaw said that they weren't going to do
anything. They just they just toldthose They just told those young women they

(31:45):
shouldn't have done what they did andwalked away. And I still think it's
messed up. I think, uh, with the publicity that it got,
I think the game wardens need toyou know, publicize or do something and
search these people out and have atalk with them. They'll get more mileage

(32:07):
out of that than some stupid law. Well they've already done. They've a
viral too. Yeah, I knowit goes viral too. You know,
let me ask you this, Rick, let me throw it back at you.
So let's say some young person, and boy, you talk about easy
to find, somebody's driving one hundredmiles an hour on the Southwest freewheel on
a Saturday Sunday morning when I'm tryingto get to work. Man, they

(32:29):
go buy me at one hundred. Please pull them over, say hey man,
don't drive so fast. See youlater. Have a nice day.
How much impact do you think that'sgonna have on that kid? Zero tomorrow,
one hundred miles an hour? Pullsover again? Hey man, didn't
I catch you yesterday doing a hundred? Yeah? Yeah, told you not
to do that anymore. It's dangerous, right, yeah, I know,

(32:51):
Okay, cool, all right, later, have a those day. So
you're going to use that as anexample, I'll tell you what I'd like
to get a cop on. Youcall in and say, you know,
I would pull somebody over one hundredmiles an hour, and I would let
him off with a warning. I'dlike to hear a law enforcement also admit

(33:12):
that I'm just throwing extremes out there, because that's how it's more fun.
When you're using extremes. It's aseventy five in a seventy it's speeding,
but you most I don't know, man, we're kind of getting off into
the weeds here. Unfortunately, weare getting off into some thick weeks here.
Lend into the ditch. Man,go no, we did, we

(33:35):
wrecked. We wreck Have a greatday. Buddy, I love you,
talk to you later, call usthe record. I'll see you, Audios,
good Heavens. All right, we'lltake a little break. I'll breathe
again. Yeah. There are legitimatelaws in place to prevent animal cruelty.

(33:57):
However, apparently didn't meet that standardin North Carolina because nobody beat up the
little bear. But again, youdon't know how that's going to imprint on
that bear. And those women aredarn lucky that mama bear wasn't around.
I don't know where she was,but I don't think she would have been

(34:19):
as kind as the wildlife officers were. Mark your calendars, ladies and gentlemen.
One week from today exactly, peoplein Moody Gardens are going to be
waking up and headed down to breakfast, thinking, man, that was the
finest two days of fly fishing filmsI've ever experienced, because come Friday,

(34:40):
I'm going to be driving down thereright after I leave here and going straight
to Moody Gardens and setting up toMC as I did last year, two
full evenings of amazing fly fishing filmsthat you are going to see if you
come down there on the largest screenin Texas that MG three D studio or

(35:05):
theater down there at Moody Gardens.I did it last year. I saw
some incredible films and I'm told Ihaven't even been privy to sneak previews yet,
that what we have this year iseven better. Two different film festival
collections eat one each day too. It's not last year was the same both

(35:27):
days. This year Friday night beautifulfilms, Saturday night more different beautiful fly
fishing related films. And there's alot of conservation in there. There's a
lot of you'll see a lot ofthe world in tremendous detail, and you
will be treated to just an outstandingweekend of enjoyment. I can assure you.

(35:49):
It was so much fun last year, and I couldn't wait. I
started about six months ago, sayhey, if you need somebody at MC
again, I'd kind of like tothrow my hat in the ring. And
fortunately they said, sure, let'sdo it again. And I'm gonna be
down there. I'm gonna broadcast fromthere live on Saturday morning, as a
matter of fact, and I'm makinga weekend of it. I'm bringing my
golf clubs, I'm bringing fishing rods, and you can do the same thing.

(36:12):
The tickets to the event are justthe film fast tickets are just fifteen
dollars. If you want to makea weekend of it, check in with
Moody Gardens. They have got oneand two night hotel packages available, so
you can do that and get thefull experience. And if you want to
take advantage of the cash bar, there's going to be food there the appetizers
to keep you nice and comfortable whileyou're watching these films. I can't emphasize

(36:37):
enough how fun that was last yearand how amazing these films are. Moodygardens
dot org. Go there, checkout the details, get your tickets,
get your hotel package all set up, and I'll see you there. Moodygardens

(36:57):
com. Now more fight. Yeah. I got a couple of emails.
What if the mother bear had beenaround let's see. Yeah, see,
that's what I talked about yesterday. That's exactly. This is one of the
reasons you don't mess with these, especially with a bear. What are you
gonna do if you're on a safariin Africa and you've come across a lion

(37:21):
cub. You wouldn't jump out ofthe land rover and run over there and
pick it up and start petting it. No, because you'd be scared of
the mother lion. What about thelioness? What about the mother bear?
What about that sal bear? Ifthat sal bear had been around, just
like Dennis is saying, and likeI said yesterday, that would have ended
a whole lot differently, a wholelot differently for probably four or five of

(37:45):
those people standing around there being stupid. Take your pictures of the little bears
in the tree. That's so cute. Oh, that's so cute and cuddly.
And look how close I got tohim. I was only about ten
or fifteen feet away. But Iwasn't plucking them out of a tree you
like a ripe apple, because thatwas stupid. Oh, let me get

(38:06):
Brandon up here. Go ahead andput the click on him in there,
boys, Thank you, Brandon. What's up? Good morning, mister Pike.
We better bottle this water, Imean, this weather up right now,
because we're gonna need it in July, September, in August. That
an idea. What we do istake a day like this when it's nice

(38:27):
and cool and pump as much asjust blow it up like a balloon the
old astronome. Just fill it rightthere and then just ease it out and
come about August. Yes, sir, that is I uh yeah, well
that's anyway. I love your conversation, and I am and I'll be very

(38:50):
honest. I mean, there arelaws and regulations set in place for the
conservation. Especially in the state ofTexas. We do a great job compared
to other states. I mean, there's a lot of resource, so we
do a great job. We do. And that question right in education,

(39:15):
you know those people that probably pickedthose bears up whatever. I'm just saying.
I watched the video and if wewe I like I say, I'm
fifty four, so I mean Iremember the things to how I was raised
and the hunting and the fishing.I remember. You don't think that that

(39:36):
doesn't have an impact on somebody asthey grow up. If it does,
it does, it has a greatimpact. Well. Yeah, the issue
that we face now is just thatthose people who did that are probably they
have to be at least second generationof people who weren't really properly introduced to
the outdoors. They all are exactlythey have there's no idea, the ramifications

(40:01):
of that, and they're only theironly connection to the outdoors is what they've
seen in cartoons and movies, whichis all fake. It's all blowney.
It doesn't happen that way, Itjust doesn't. So I don't, Like
I said, there has to besome sort of repercussion. You can't just

(40:22):
let people get away with this andtell them, you know, don't do
that again, because they're gonna doit again. There's nothing happened to them.
That's all they know. That's clickbait. They want to get a
selfie. I mean, I mean, I mean, I agree, like
I said, I mean, youcan't. I mean it's kind of like,
uh, you know, drinking anddriving. You know, Oh,

(40:43):
pat you on the back, go. Yeah, No, I mean,
it's it's the same thing wildlife. It's the same thing. Wildlife is so
nice without it is it's a we'reon a slippery slope, man, and
we start letting people get away withstuff like that. Thanks for the call,
man, it's good to hear fromyou. Yes, sir, about
it? You bet? All right, man, I'm gonna I'm gonna go

(41:05):
grab one more. All right, let's sit, let's get to Joe if
we can real quick to talk, tic talk, tic talk. I can't
put him on hold. Joe.You there, let's find him. Where'd
he go? There we go?Click away, there we go. We

(41:28):
got this figured out. Don't youworry, Joe. I wasn't gonna let
you get lost. What's up?Well? I have a couple of questions.
One, do they ever have fishingshows? I know they got one
at Moody Gardens they're having that blackFish and Joe, But they never have
any at the Umble Civic Center forthe guys that live on Cable North side
guys. I don't know of onespecifically about fishing up that way. I

(41:52):
don't, And you know, itwouldn't be a bad idea, really,
you can, you can. Youcould be the first one to organize it.
Man. I don't know anything aboutthat, Shu. I mean,
hell, I don't even know nothingabout fishing. So that's why you want
to go to the show. That'swhy I want to go. Yeah,
Dad, gum it yet? Andkind of back in I guess it was
late February or so. The fishingshow that's been around for more than forty

(42:15):
years I think now came rolling throughthe George R. Brown that may be
the closest to you, and infairness to whatever might happen up that way
up around the task Casita, theone down here is going to be so
much bigger. It might be worthcoming in and just getting a motel room
one night and really doing it upand staying in the show all day long.
Right, Yeah, that's what I'msaying. Behood of the traffic in

(42:37):
the parking situation down there, it'sso much easier here, almost Civic Center.
Well, that's true, that's true, and it probably would be a
successful event. But the problem forthe producer of a show like that is
it costs so much to rent thefacility that they would have to, you
know, and then they in turnrent out boot space and table space inside

(42:59):
and it's just got to make fiscalsense. It's got to make financial sense.
Yeah, And that's a that's athat'd be. I wouldn't want to
be first. I wouldn't want togo first out of my own pocket,
and the other think I just didn't. I didn't want you to, you
know, I know you're you've beentalking a lot about these bears, but
I just don't want you to forgetabout your friends. The little ducks on

(43:21):
the water. That's that's all Ihave to say, my little Oh you're
tall, you're cormorants. Uh,that's a cruel blow. Damage. Oh
later audio. Oh I've been setup, that's for sure. Hang up

(43:42):
on that man and go ahead andhang that line. Yeah, there we
go. Oh my goodness, wegotta take a break. We'll do that,
and I'll just go curl up ina corner and think about the corner.
The reason that it really struck metoday. To Joe, it's a
double whammy for me because we've hada shad hatch again out there on the
lake that feeds my bass, mostof them anyway. And I'm curious to

(44:08):
see if we go from what wehave currently, which is only maybe eight
or ten cormorants total hanging around there. Ah, those things are They're not
quite dime sized yet. They're aboutmaybe maybe a half an inch and there
are lots of them. And I'llsee if the cormorants are as conniving as

(44:30):
I believe they are in about twoweeks, when those things are about an
inch long, and see if thosecormorants come back on the way out to
the top of the hour. Shooter'sCorner Palmer High went twenty ninth Street down
there in Texas City, sent somebodydown there yesterday. As a matter of
fact, if you were listening, you heard the conversation. Owners are Jerry

(44:51):
and Jtk, a father and sonteam who have been in that building.
Well dad has for more than fortyyears. Jerry's dad, Jays's son.
Both of them are fully licensed guidesfor pretty much any North American big game
you can name. In fact,we were talking about bears yesterday and Jason

(45:12):
a picture of himself next to thehead of a huge brown bear that somebody
had taken, probably up in Alaska. Be my bet, Shooter's Corner is
just an old school gun store. That's all they ever wanted to be,
and that's exactly what it is.It looks like a gun store when you
walk in. You see the guns, you see the AMMO, the optics,

(45:34):
the Camo reloading supplies. There's ashop behind the counter that goes deeper
into the building where a lot ofgunsmithing work, some of the best gunsmithing
in town. I'd assure you thata lot of that gets done. And
it even smells like a gun storeit. If you don't know what that
is, just walk into Shooter's Cornerwith your eyes closed and then just oh,

(45:55):
okay, now I know what Dougmeans. The Shooter's Corner TX dot
com is the website. If youwear a badge for a living, you
get a discount, which I thinkis pretty dog on nice of them.

since nineteen eighty nine. Now Here'sdog Pike. Second hour, second and
final hour of a Sunday program startsright now nine o'clock and I know three
point fifty three to be specific.Brand has been waiting for a minute.
Let's go see what's on his mindthis morning? Click him on up boys,
what's up? Brandon? Good morning, Doug? How are you?

(46:43):
I'm good? How are you good? Do you hear me? Okay,
loud and clear, man, what'son your mind? First audian to talk
to? Okay, I haven't owna gun. What kind of gun should

(47:04):
I get? Well? I wouldI would talk about that with family members
and try and figure out what whatdo you plan to do with it?
Go? Yeah, you got tofigure out what you want to hunt and
then find an appropriate firearm for that, and then make sure I'm sorry,
go ahead, go ahead, Iwill talk to somebody about it. Yeah,

(47:34):
check and see. It depends onwhat you want to hunt. If
you want to go hunt birds, you need a shotgun. If you want
to hunt deer, you need arifle. And then whatever whatever you end
up deciding and whatever seems like thebest for you, once you've kind of
talked it over with people who reallyknow about it, and then make sure
you get lessons so that you knowthat you're handling it property and say properly
and safely. Safety first, man. Safety always comes first with firearms.

(48:01):
Yeah, I am fishing too.Yeah, you gotta be careful with that.
I will get somebody to take meto the boat soon. That'll work,
all right. Thanks? Hey,I appreciate it's good to hear from
you, Brandon. Did you watchthe Astros last night? I don't think
they played last night? Did theyyesterday afternoon? Oh? Okay? What

(48:24):
was the score? I didn't seeit one, I was too busy.
Did they win or loose? Again, that's terrible, man, I was
watching too much golf. I waswatching both tournaments. In fact, I
gotta go cover them. Actually,I gotta go talk about my leaderboards here.
Good to hear from you, asalways, my friend. I'll talk

(48:45):
to you next week week. Alright, you too, boy bye? All
right, let me get my handydandy computer functioning on leader boards. And
since I missed him yesterday, I'mso embarrassed. I will lead with the
Let me refresh, just to makesure there has been no movement that I'm

(49:05):
not aware of. Yeah, herewe go at the Chevron Championship, the
first calendar major on the LPGA Tourthis year, going on up in the
Woodlands at Carlton Woods. I gotto play there at a media day event
a little bit back, and itwas absolutely fantastic. They did some tweaking
to the tournament there right after thelast putt was made on eighteen in twenty

(49:30):
twenty three, and the average person, the average observer, even somebody who
was there last year, might notreally notice. But there were some changes
made that the players certainly will notice. It will change their mindsets. On
a couple of tea boxes, thegreens all are a little bit bigger,

(49:52):
and it's really turning into a shootout. It truly is just about god.
Everybody finished with their third round.I'm looking at one, two, three,
Yeah, the last threesome is comingup the eighteenth toll now and shortly
thereafter they'll spin them around and getthem out. Let me see if it
shows tea times. No, itdoesn't show tea times specifically, but they

(50:15):
won't waste any time they want toget this done. It's going to be
a pretty breezy day up there, but I suspect a very nice day for
golf. It'll be a lot coolerthan it was yesterday and a lot drier
too. Hi Ron Rue eleven underpar, finished up at five under for
the third round and has taken aone shot lead over Brooke Henderson, who

(50:37):
is at ten. Well, that'skind of obviously, and Nellie Korda Henderson
shot eight under par yesterday, Quardashot three under par. The two of
them and your current leader, Ithink, and maybe a Tiethtical. I
don't know about Maja Stark. Idon't know much about her, but I'm

(51:00):
going to guess that the winner ofthis tournament is going to come out of
those top five, and I thinkMinami Katsu at seven, gen Em at
seven, and then the sixes areall going to be playing for a little
bit bigger paycheck than the woman whofinishes behind them. But I don't think
they'll walk out of there with thetrophy. And I've been wrong before,

(51:22):
I have, so I don't know. If you have an opportunity to go
up to the Woodlands and watch,it's a very reasonable ticket price to get
in there and go and watch thesewomen navigate this golf course, and they
are extremely good at what they do. The more times I get to hang
around with some of these women, the more impressed I am with the way

(51:45):
they manage the golf course because it'svery relatable to me. I don't hit
it three forty. That's a totallydifferent game that the PGA Tour is playing,
and I respect that and I'm amazedby it. I'm all struck by
it. Every time on I'm hitsa drive and I've tried. I know
how to look for the ball.If I'm standing on the tea box behind

(52:06):
him, I know how to lookfor where the ball's going, But sometimes
it just leaves so fast I can'tfind it. Now, I got to
watch the little guy wave the flag. Oh, it's gonna go left,
it's gonna go right, whatever.Then I still don't see it. I
still don't see it, and whereit lands with my eyes at my age,
not a clue. If I weresomehow magically able to starting tomorrow morning,

(52:32):
magically able to drive the ball threehundred and twenty to three hundred and
forty yards, I'd have to hirea spotter to go stand, just run
down and get a fore caddy everytime I played, because I would not
be able to find my ball.I'd have a good idea whether it went
left or right going off the clubface. I know I've hit enough ball

(52:53):
to know that feeling, but Iwouldn't be able to see it. There's
no way, not unless it landedin the middle of the fairway and had
a stereo speaker system in it thatcould blare back music from caddy Shack.
That's how I could do it.Good looking leaderboard, great field up there

(53:15):
at the Chevron Championship at Carlton Woods, and I would encourage anybody who wants
to see some really good golf playedright here locally to get up there.
Take your daughters up there for sureinspire them to go play golf. That's
a good scholarship opportunity for young womenthese days, very good, especially if

(53:36):
they can fix the way things arein women's sports. Right now, let's
go to the RBC Heritage, shallwe over there in South Carolina? Fantastic
tournament, Hilton Head Island, SouthCarolina. Boy, there's a boatload of
golf courses over there. This wasat Harbortown. It's an iconic golf course

(53:57):
in that region. Scottish Juffler leadingby one. Imagine that he's at sixteen
under par, shot sixty three yesterday. And if he is even anywhere in
that zone of his that he's beenin for about the past four or five
weeks or six weeks, he'll gethimself another trophy in another handful of money

(54:20):
for a new baby of his Stepstrukaat fifteen, one shot off the lead.
Colin Morikawa fourteen, two shots offthe lead, Sahita Gala, Patrick
Rogers, Ludvig Odberg all at thirteenunder par, just a sleeve off the
lead, but chasing a guy whohas absolutely lit it up. He's going

(54:45):
for four out of five wins andhis only non victory in this streak he's
on right now was a second placefinish, not so bad. And guess
where that was? That was hereactually field, great golf course. It's
fun to watch these things. It'sfun to watch them on TV. It's
fun to watch them in person. It's a totally different experience actually, and

(55:07):
a lot of times the shell Houstonopens, for example, I would watch.
I would watch early when I wasbroadcasting from up there at Golf Club
of Houston and would finish my broadcastand then go out and walk the course
for a few hours. But especiallyon Sunday, I would actually slip out

(55:27):
and go to the house to watchthe final groups come up eighteen, seventeen
and eighteen because it's a more inclusiveexperience. You can see so many different
things going on at once on TV. But then there's a side of me
that always likes being out there too. The roars of the crowd are when

(55:49):
somebody of note really does something amazing. The roars of the crowd are just
spectacular. Speaking of golf, andwe touched on it a little bit earlier,
the live golf experience, it ismaking its way here and we'll be
here in June back right where I'mtalking about Golf Club of Houston, and
I am immersing myself in that experienceas deeply as I can possibly do it.

(56:12):
I've always wanted to see one ofthese events firsthand because it's a totally
different experience than a PGA Tour event. It's a shotgun start, so nobody's
If your favorite player in a PGATour event draws a seven to ten start
time and you want to follow them, you better get up early because they're
going to be out and gone. It's seven ten, not seven to eleven

(56:35):
either. You got to be therefor it. With this, With the
live golf format, everybody goes outlate morning and finish up mid afternoon,
and then it's more of a partyatmosphere. I honestly don't know what they
do after the golf finishes up.I know there are activities. I know
there's a lot of stuff to keepthe crowd and the patriot involved, and

(57:02):
I just want to see it formyself. It's gonna be a lot of
fun, no question about it.Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety Email me Doug Pike at iHeartMediadot com. Let's take a little break.
Shall we on the way out,I'll tell you about CCA the Coastal
Conservation Association's Texas Star twenty twenty four. This is the kind of the call

(57:25):
to action right now to be partof the early bird members who have signed
up for this. This tournament hasbeen around forever, for having's sakes.
If you don't know, if youjust got here, if you just rolled
into Texas and rolled up to thecoast. It's a tournament, a summer
long tournament sponsored by the Coastal ConservationAssociation, which has been around fifty something

(57:50):
years now. And what they dois they they team up with Texas Ford
Dealers, Cademy Sports and Outdoors,Progressive Insurance, and many many other fantastic
sponsors and offer up one point ninemillion dollars in prizes that will be given
away at the end of the summer. If you catch the right redfish,

(58:13):
you might win a truck, boat, motor and trailer. If you are
a kid and you catch the rightfish, you might win an amazing golf
or dot golf, but college scholarship. There are all kinds of options.
There are all kinds of prizes outthere, and the only way you're going

(58:34):
to find out about all of themis to just go to that website and
check it out. Star tournament dotorg. You sign up by May third,
you get some exclusive early bird benefits, and best of all, there
are two things really good about thistournament. Number One, if you boil
it all down, here's what itdoes. Gives you then excuse to go
fishing every day this summer. Hey, I got to take the kids fishing

(58:58):
again. We need to take thefamily fishing again. We're gonna get them
a scholarship. I'm gonna win myselfa boat. All we gotta do is
get a little bit lucky. Butyou can't win if you don't play.
You can't win if you don't fish. So there's that, and then also
the membership that comes with joining thetournament, that gets you involved in an

(59:19):
organization that's been slowly and steadily workingfor coastal resources for half a century now.
Started out right here in Houston, right here in Houston. Started out
with a handful of guys who said, enough's enough. We gotta make sure
that our resources here, our coastalresources, are protected. That grew into

(59:40):
something that covered the entire Gulf Coast. Then it went up the East coast.
Now there are West coast chapters, and all slowly and steadily, very
patiently. Uh. There's been aknock on CCA every now and then about
how they move too slowly and theydon't do enough. Well, slowly and
steadily they have done some amazing thingsfor our resources. And I have no

(01:00:07):
problem at all. I know howit works. I know the system.
I was there. I edited Tidemagazine for ten years. I was in
a lot of meetings. I wasin a lot of really interesting discussions.
And the one thing nobody ever saysis well, we just have to do
something right away. No, youhave to do the right thing, the

(01:00:28):
right way. Very different. CCATexas twenty twenty four Star win yourself a
boat, win yourself a big fatgift card, win yourself a scholarship,
well for the kids anyway, Startournament dot org. That's where it all
signs, Star tournament dot org. This is Sportstock seven ninety, Facebook dot

(01:01:12):
over your shoulder or something. Andyou got to be able to adam,
do you know whether these are papertickets or not or electronic? Okay,
well, either way, we'll we'llfind a way. We'll we'll find a
way to make it work. Infact, if push came to shove,
if the winner couldn't get by here, I could probably bring that. If
they are paper tickets, indeed,I could probably bring them with me.

(01:01:35):
Or I could just get a nameand we'll we'll get you in one way
or the other, don't you worry. So anyway, if somebody wants to
go bow up and play the game, and I'm not gonna tell you anything
about what the temperature is in thestate of Texas, I will, in
full transparency tell you that the stationat Perryton's out of whack again, and

(01:01:55):
so we're gonna throw it out andfind the next lowest number. And the
next lowest number is pretty close totheir pretty close to that spot. It's
kind of the same as it wasyesterday. So if you want to go
to the Fly Fishing Film Festival andjoin me and hundreds of others in watching
these films which are so darned coolseven one three two one two five seven

(01:02:16):
ninety, email me, Doug Pike. Well, no, don't. Well
you can email me if you want, but I'm not gonna give you the
tickets that way. Alan, DidI say that? Yeah? I mentioned
six years old, lived in ahouse that was built in the seventeen thirties.
I find out from Adam that hisgreat grandmother is it great grandmother?
Is that right? And she isfrom England? What part of England specifically,

(01:02:40):
you know, from Lincolnshire? England? Lincolnshire. Do we have any
idea where that is? It's likekind of north and west, definitely farther
north than London, okay. Andwhen was her home built the fifteen hundreds?
Oh my word, holy cow, that's different time. I saw a

(01:03:00):
funny thing on and you have tounderstand where Great Britain is and what it
all encompasses. And there was aspoof on Facebook a guy from Northern Ireland
Okay, and he's called the policeand said, look, I've called you
guys up several times this morning, and I'm really worried. There is just

(01:03:21):
this huge bright thing outside my houseand oh my gosh, it's got the
kids really scared, and I'm justI don't know what to do. Can
you please? And then there's thispolicy and he goes, it's what the
sun really? The sun? Ohoh oh, And then he says,
hold on a second, and hesays, kids, it's okay, It's

(01:03:44):
only the sun, which if youlived in Northern Ireland or had studied it
at all, you would realize thatthey don't get a lot of sunshine in
Northern Ireland. So anyway, Ithought that was kind of funny. All
right, let me move on here. I wanted to go back to by
the way. Yesterday I asked, what does what does the outdoors mean to
you? Just a straightforward question, very open ended, didn't didn't have to

(01:04:09):
specify anything, and it was itwas interesting to see some of the answers
because there were a lot of usin this in this audience who who felt
like the outdoors is and it isfor me. It's not a place where
I go to get away from things. It's a place I go. I

(01:04:32):
run toward it. I'm not runningaway from something. When I go fishing
or hunting, or or walking throughthe woods or whatever, I'm running to
something. I know that day today life is is a grind for most
of us. It's tough, it'shard, hard work. And my reward
for doing my hard work is theopportunity to go ahead and get outside and

(01:04:59):
breathe a little per air. Iget far away from a city as you
can get and maybe get a littlevitamin D if the sun's out, and
all that good stuff. But everybodyin this audience, from whom I heard
yesterday at least, has a greatrespect. You could just read it in
the responses. You can feel it. There's a tremendous respect for the animals

(01:05:21):
that are out there, for thefish that are out there, for the
trees and everything else. I'm fascinated. There was a place I had access
to for many years where I usedto take I was just so blessed to
be able to take my son downthere and drive him around on a relatively
as a good sized property was almosta full section about six hundred and twenty

(01:05:42):
acres. I think that unfortunately hassince been sold. But there were deer
all over the place. There were. We saw bobcats, we saw coyotes,
we saw foxes, We saw allkinds of snakes and this that,
and then pigs, you name it. It was there, and it was
an amazing, amazing place for him, as a very young boy to get

(01:06:10):
to just hop out of my truckand take off running across a muddy pasture
if he wanted to, and notworry about having to keep his shoes clean,
or not worry about tripping on asidewalk or something like that. He
could just go out there and immersehimself in the outdoors. And I think
it served him very well so far. He has a good understanding of how

(01:06:34):
wildlife works. He has a respectfor wildlife. That's carried over just my
little bit about mashing the barbs downon my hook. Somebody sent me an
email just the other day, abig picture of a treble hook with one
of the three hooks just totally embeddedin the guys I think it was in
his thumb. That's a game stopper. That's not a game changer. That's

(01:06:58):
a day ender. If you've gota big old fat hook buried in your
thumb with a full barb on it, you're not just gonna bite on a
stick and yank it out of therewithout tearing something up. But if the
barbs mashed flat, first of all, you're not going to miss many fish
you hook. And second of all, you just push it right out of

(01:07:20):
there. If it gets stuck inany part of you just back it out
and go back to fishing. Youdo have to be sure that those barbs
are mashed down all the way, though, because if they're not, they
will find something to grab and yankand tear up a couple of nerves on
the way out. Just saying bevery careful. But yeah, everybody was
really, really very aware that natureis so much bigger than us. And

(01:07:47):
I still think it's a little bitarrogant for anybody on the planet to tell
anybody else that if we just dothis, we can change the future of
the world. We're just one speciesand not even the most dominant species on

(01:08:08):
this planet, and to think thatpretty much anything we do, especially especially
if you narrow it down to justour country, unless the entire world gets
on board with any plan to doanything, not gonna change it. Not

(01:08:29):
gonna change it. Seven one threeseven ninety Email me Doug pick At iHeartMedia

golf tournament with more than one hundredand fifty two hundred players, you can
get them all out same day, raise a pile money for your favorite costs.
They have a great dining room outthere. It's kind of a cafe
experience and really good food. Theyhave a great lesson staff down at the
far end of the driving range. One of the things I like about black

(01:09:16):
Horse too, is that over theyears they've launched this membership option. Rather
than just come out there and payto play day by day, if you
sign up for the membership option, you get discounts in the pro shop,
you get preferred tea times, youget all kinds of special deals. And
one of the things that really appealsto me is that you get unlimited range

(01:09:40):
use. They just you can youcan get them to bring you a bushel
basket full of golf balls, andif you empty that bushel basket, they'll
bring you another basket full of golfballs. Just keep hitting them till you
get your swing right, however longthat takes. Black Horse Great Place,

Our buddy from New York emailed mebragging about his ten car rod. They
are so good. Those are reallygood rods. I don't own one at
present, but I might have togo little. I'm getting fired up about
fly fishing. I do every yearabout this time, and there are Texas.

(01:10:56):
If you don't know, it isactually a tremendous stopping point for some
of the best fly for fishermen inthe world because it offers things that we
kind of take for granted but thatmake great fly fishing targets. If you
go pretty much to any place alongour coast, the redfish chasing is fantastic

(01:11:23):
there. I can't think of anyplace from Sabine down to the Rio Grande
where you couldn't go and within aday anyway, in decent weather, if
you definitely, if you devoted thetime to it, a full day of

(01:11:43):
fishing, you're gonna catch some redfish. I don't know how many,
depends on the day, depends onwhere you are, depends on the season,
all that stuff. But we kindof darn good redfish population so much
so that people are whining about it, saying that they're eating up all our
little trout. That's a problem tohave, and we're set up to have
a ton of both in the nextfour or five six years. One of

(01:12:08):
the fish that and as long asI'm in the shallow water, let's talk
about big trout too. There area lot of fly fishermen whose goal it
is whose life goal it is tocatch a monster speckled trout on the fly.
And I'd say from about Mattagorda downthere is a really good opportunity to

(01:12:30):
stalk those fish in very shallow waterand very patiently get within casting range and
just drop that fly right in frontpresent it and see if they'll eat it.
One of the bigger fish that peoplechase with fly rods that it doesn't
get a lot of attention around here, but in the summertime, when there

(01:12:51):
are schools of jack kraval running aroundthe bay, running in the surf,
it's it's not uncommon, it's lesscommon or less uncommon now. It's more
common now amongst the few boats thatwill go chase those jack kraval because around

(01:13:12):
here they've kind of got a reputationfor being a fish that's no good to
eat, and because it's no goodto eat, nobody wants to chase them.
They don't want to be bothered. They're a very strong, powerful fish,
and it keeps you from being ableto fight something that either has more
panache like a tarpin, or morepalatability like a smaller redfish. Man you

(01:13:39):
drop a big popping bug into aschool of jackfish, and you'll be lucky
if you don't get your arm pulledout of the socket when one of them
finally grabs onto it and turns theother way and shifts that powerful body into
full gear. They are a goodtarget. Tarping not so much here.
Okay, tarpin fishing doesn't lend itselfto fly fishing, but we're getting increasing

(01:14:05):
number. I'll tell you something elsethat kind of is overlooked. I think
even a little bit by fly fishermanas mangrove snapper, they're fun to catch.
They're becoming more plentiful as we sneakthrough winters a couple of winters without
just fish killing freezes. That's somethingto look at. And then on the
freshwater side, my goodness, aspawning bass that's a pretty good target for

(01:14:30):
a fly rod in spawning season. And then most anytime you get the temperature
changes that we're getting now that arepulling fish, as we get the water
levels to come back up, thatare pulling fish onto the shorelines. You
can either get into a stock tanksomewhere and just kind of walk the bank,
maybe with knee boots on or thighhigh waiters hit boots and you could

(01:14:53):
do that. You can get ona boat and stand on the bow.
And I don't know that I would. I don't know that I would connect
fly fishing to forward looking sonar.I think that'd be kind of Nah,
that's over. Gotn't like that idea. Someone three two one two five seven
nine e mmbdugpocket dot artmedia dot com. And just understand that fly fishing is.

(01:15:15):
If you haven't done it yet andyou're over thirty, grab a fly
rod sometime. Take a lesson soyou don't waste a year of your life
trying to learn how to do itright and then just get really good at
doing it wrong. Take a lesson, learn how to cast, and then
go explore that way. It willopen your eyes to a totally. It's
kind of like starting bow hunting ifyou've been hunting with a rifle all your

(01:15:40):
life. American Shooting Centers, speakingof guns, American Shooting Centers out there
on West Timber Parkway a fantastic placeto enjoy the shooting sports safely, comfortably
in a user friendly environment too. When Eedorigi bought this place, he determined
that he was going to make itmore easy to get there and go do

(01:16:01):
your shooting and just kind of feellike nobody's you don't you're not dependent on
anybody else. The old school wayof doing that is to have some high
school kid out there to pull targetsfor you on trapp and skeet and sporting
clays, and that's not set upthat way at American shooting centers. It's
a token. It's like a slotmachine, and you put a token in

(01:16:24):
the slot and you get to pullI think it's fifty two to fifty three
targets. They account for a coupleof them maybe coming out sideways and break
it up, but you have andin addition to three sporting clays courses,
I think it's ten trap and skeetfields. Five stand all over the property
a beginner's wing shooting area. Theyalso have rifle and pistol shooting from five

(01:16:48):
yards, which is that self defensestuff all the way out to six hundred
yards. That's way out yonder intechnical shooting terms, it's a it's a
long haul to throw a bullet sixhundred yards and these guys, the guys
who do that on the six hundredyard range will do it very well.
If you're going to try to getdown there and observe. Bring some really

(01:17:11):
good binoculars or maybe even a spottingscope just to see where they're hitting those
targets at that range. American ShootingCenters is the largest non military shooting facility
in the state of Texas. That'ssaying something right there, and one of
the most fun places to go andenjoy the shooting sports. American Shooting Centers

is Sports Talk seven ninety breaking sportsnews on Facebook twenty four to seven.
We'll get that information to them. This is the Doug Fight Show. I'm
looking at the iwind Surf site tosee just how windy it is in the

(01:17:56):
wake of this little storm system thatpushed through. It's mostly a north to
maybe just with a little baby bitof west in it up here. As
you move down the coast, itstraightens out to almost dead north, which
unfortunately isn't straight offshore. It ismore it's with the northwest. It's more
offshore up here than it is alittle farther down. And then as you

(01:18:19):
get way down the coast, itit becomes more sideshore than anything else.
The consistent part of this wind thatwe're talking about is that it's blowing,
it is humming. The lowest numberI see along the coast is a fifteen.
Right now at surfside, it's twentynine. At what is this going

(01:18:44):
to be? That's gonna be?Right about San Louis Pass, you had
twenty five miles an hour there, high teens, low twenties all around the
Galveston Bay system, and then twentytwo, twenty three, twenty twenty five
moving down the coast to port Oran this. There's a bigger one right
there south Bird Island, twenty ninemiles an hour. So if you're gonna

(01:19:05):
fly a kite, make it abig one and get some strong, strong
string. It's gonna be uh blusteryand bring a jacket. Temperatures when I
left the house this morning, Iwant to say it was fifty two,
maybe fifty four degrees. It was. It was chili. It was chili,

(01:19:26):
And that wind's not gonna make itfeel any warmer. I can assure
you seven one, three two fiveseven ninety. I've got a couple more
minutes. I would love to hearfrom anybody and everybody who who wants to
weigh in on what the outdoors meansto them before we kind of shift gears
moving into next week and change topics. By the way, Rudy sent me
a reminder. I saw this acouple of days ago. There's a restaurant

(01:19:49):
over in Louisiana that is going toand I'll write, I'll wrap celebrate in
air quotes, celebrate this emerg insinceone in a thirty something years emergence of
a triple, double, quadruple doseof cicadas. Boy, I guarantee you

(01:20:10):
the copperheads are licking their lips rightnow. They if they have any connection
to the earth where they can sensewhat's coming, they are happy little snakes
right now because they love to climbup trees and eat cicadas. That's a
little that's a little pro tip.I didn't think cicadas. I didn't think
copperheads could climb trees. And Italked about this, I believe yesterday,

(01:20:31):
until a few years ago when Iwas standing close to a tree on a
golf course and realized that part ofwhat I was looking at on that tree
trunk was a copperhead just slithering upthe tree. It had stopped because I
got kind of close to it,but I backed up when I saw it

(01:20:53):
and realized what it was. Copperheadsare really really good at disappearing into dead
leaves, into tree. So nexttime you're out in the golf course and
nature calls, just watch your step. I got really close to one years
ago. Actually the snak was onthe ground, it wasn't on a tree,

(01:21:13):
but I stopped. I had toexcuse myself from the tea box and
step into the grass and the trees. And when I stopped and looked down,
my left foot was about eighteen inchesfrom a copperhead. Yeah, I'd
say eighteen inches that's about right. And I very calmly took my right foot

(01:21:36):
and moved it back, and thenlifted my left foot oh so gently,
and gathered myself and went back tothe cart, got my phone to go
take a picture of that snake, and he had already left. He didn't
want any part of it. Notphotogenic at all, I guess, and
at least not receptive to being photographed. There's a big difference there. The

(01:21:59):
cicada thing. Back to that there'sa restaurant in New Orleans that is gathering
up recipes for cicadas in anticipation ofthis emergence of something like a trillion of
these things all at once. It'stwo different timeframes of their immersion or emergence

(01:22:20):
at once, and it only happensevery few decades. And this is the
year, and they're gonna be everywhere, but they're not gonna be on my
plate. Okay, I got todraw the line. I know I'm half
Cajun, and I understand that Cajun'selite just about anything. There's an old
joke about it occasion who walked intothe courthouse and said, I need you

(01:22:42):
to extend the duck season by onemonth, and the judge said, what
are you gonna call it? Youalready hunt them the other twelve. In
any event, I'm not eating cicadas. There was a contest years ago in
this day of Louisiana faced such anutrient problem that it engaged the services of

(01:23:04):
I think about a dozen of thetop chefs in America and had them come
up with recipes for neutria. Onewas Ratton, and see some of the
grown Ratton and Bruschette or something likethat, but the translation was big rat
on a stick. And no,I didn't want that either. Let me

(01:23:26):
go talk to Robert. Click camein. I got time for Robert.
What's up, hey, man?A couple of things. Yeah, when
I was young, my grandfather we'dgo fishing and he would fly fish,
and we were on a reservoir andhe'd get up around these these trees and
he could throw that that little bugup there and we'd get into a big

(01:23:46):
mess of brim and oh man, that's so fun. He taught me how
to how to fly fish. Hewas actually legally blind. I mean he
couldn't he couldn't drive or anything. But man, he could throw. He
could throw a fly flying a teacup. Huh, yes he could. And
uh, another thing I want toask you about. I've got some pictures
that I took in West Texas threeor four years ago. Uh. Maybe

(01:24:12):
I'll think I'll email them to youand let me, uh maybe tell me
what you're thinking about them about whereto maybe go with them there. They're
pretty spectacular pictures of some storms.Oh wow, Yeah, I'd like to
see them. Absolutely. I wouldso faginated by weather I have a tremendous
respect for weather. I do,and I'm I think, what bothers you?

(01:24:34):
What would scare you more? Earthquake? Tornado or hurricane? Uh tornado?
What about her? Yeah? Seetornadoes at least you can kind of.
They got sirens for those where theycome up most. But down here,
especially, tornado will sneak up rightbehind you. It'll be hiding in

(01:24:55):
a thunderstorm somewhere and rip your placeup. They don't get as big down
here as a do in the Midwest, but you know you and I have
seen them come through. I hadone come right through my neighborhood once and
it's scary. Man. I hadhad a I guess it was straight line
on this maybe possible tornado a coupleof years ago, and about it was

(01:25:15):
two years ago in August knocked abig limb out of my tree and threw
it across the front of my frontdoor. On a afternoon I drove from
Austin. It was sunny the wholeway home and oh my gosh, damn
it hit. But uh, yeah, I mean earthquake. I'm not worried
about them. In a one storyhouse, I can get out. I'm
not worried about that. And thenthat's a good point. And hurricane I

(01:25:36):
got a lot of notice I'm headednorth like I like my chances against hurricanes.
We know when they're coming within fortyeight hours. I trust the forecast
a lot. Uh A week outwho nobody knows, nobody has a clue.
Uh. But that and then theearthquake thing, I don't. I'm
never gonna live in California, soI'm not too worried about that either.

(01:25:56):
No me. Now, I heardthey had earthquake. Told me they have
Texas around Carmen the other day.Yeah, there's been some stuff going on
around here. I don't I hopeI don't ever have to sit through this
when my coffee starts shaking like there'sa t Rex walking down the hall or
something. I don't want to feelthat, all right, man, No,
I don't either. But well man, yeah, I want to see

(01:26:18):
those pictures. And I'm glad yourgrandpa introduced you to fly fishing, because
that's that's oh yeah, yeah itwas soon anyway. Yeah, you brought
back some great memories for me too, see you later, Thank you,
all right, men, audios?Yeah, that fly fishing for brim I
didn't even mention that, but that'skind of that's a beginner's entry level thing,

(01:26:38):
and you go in. You youcan go online and buy cheap little
imitation ants and spiders and tiny littlecrickets and grasshoppers that you can throw on
a fly rod that aren't fancy fliesthat are going to cost you four,
five, six eight dollars apiece. They're just gonna be uh. They're functional
flies. And when you're talking aboutcatching brim catching blue gills and red ears

(01:27:03):
and green sunfish and all those funthings, that's all you need. You
need a very lightweight fly rod.You don't want to be throwing an eight
weight at them. That's a littleoverkill. And find yourself four weight somewhere
that's a good entry level a littlefish fly rod, and just go to
a place that you know has someif you want to, you want to

(01:27:24):
increase your odds, get some chump, throw some corn out there. The
sunfish will come up and start eatingthat corn. And they're not gonna turn
down an ant or a grasshopper justbecause they got a belly full of corn.
I can assure you that's personal experiencecan tell you that get out and
fish, get out, have somefun with your family. Holy cow,
this is the weekend. We gotrid of the rain last night. It's

(01:27:46):
gonna be breezy, it's gonna becool. But that shouldn't stop anybody in
this audience. That's just a goodold time to be outside, really cool.
Better take advantage of that too.We can't bottle it. You might
as well enjoy it while it's fresh. Get outside, have some fun with
your family. Stay safe for me, please, so we can all meet
up at Moody Gardens this coming weekend. I'll be down there Friday afternoon.

(01:28:09):
I don't know what time, butI can't wait to be down there,
and I hope I see some ofyou. If you get a chance and
you see me standing around, comeon and say hello. I would love
to visit with you. I reallywould. Thanks so much for listening.
I'll be back here Tuesday to dofifty plus and then i'll be back here.
Well, i won't be here.I'll be down in Moody Gardens broadcasting
life from there Saturday morning. Staysafe, have some fun. I'll see
