(00:01):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by American Shooting Centers Guns
Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now here's Doug Pike. All right,
here we go. Saturday morning editionof the program starts right now.
And I have gotten all the wayover here without my headphones. Melan,
you got anything better to do?You think you could maybe run get those
(00:23):
for me? You know where mydesk is right like, I can't hear
you because I don't have my headphones, the white headphones at my desk.
Man, Thanks, that's crazy.Oh. I always forget something on the
way over here always. I can'tbelieve I've had to ask him to go
(00:45):
do that. But he's a goodman. He'll take care of me.
I know he will. Welcome aboard. Thank you all for joining us this
morning on this Memorial Day weekend.Weather certainly better today than it was a
week ago, at least every well, I say everybody, with fingers crossed
and with gentle optimism that all ofthe thank you, Mellman, appreciate it.
(01:10):
Man, sorry about that. Allof the electricity I hope is back
on in the greater Houston area. There were still I want to say,
yesterday morning and during when I wasdoing fifty plus yesterday, I want to
say the number was still around fifteentwenty thousand people who had no power,
and I actually, I just can'timagine. Thank you, that's so much
(01:33):
better. I can't imagine how frustratedmany of them must have been. Rick
Bise, frequent caller, frequent flyerhere and who always has something good going
on, was out without power forquite some time. But with an asterisk,
He's got a whole house generator. So don't feel too sorry for the
(01:55):
guy. He wasn't sweating bullets, sitting around the dem with a with a
paper fan waving in front of hisface. He was full on. But
he did point out that if youthe longer you leave that generator running,
the more natural gas or whatever otherfuel you're using to run the generator.
That's how that goes. It justdoesn't run on pixie dust. There's expense,
(02:19):
but I think in summertime with noelectricity, yeah, I'd pay the
freight for whatever natural gas it tookto keep that generator running. I'm trying
to convince my wife to get one, but she has headache issues and with
the noise that a generator makes rightout in the backyard. I wish I
(02:40):
had about an acre and a half. I'd run the line all the way
out to the other side of thatand put a big brick wall around it.
But we don't have that luxury, and so that's what's causing her to
hesitate. I think I think onemore good dose of no electricity for a
day or two might be enough tosway her in the other direction. I
(03:00):
like when the power went out withthat freeze a couple of years ago.
Holy cow, that was that waspretty rough. I'm glad we had a
fireplace back then. Memorial Day weekend. If you've got plans and you want
to share them, Melbourn, hitthose phones, man and go ahead and
open them up. If you've gotplans, you want to share them.
You want to brag about where you'regoing, you want to brag about something
you already did yesterday to kick offthe weekend, I'll listen. I started
(03:25):
my weekend as soon as I leftwork here yesterday afternoon. I had to
drop something off to a friend ofmine's house, and then I just kept
rolling in the direction of black HawkGolf Club and got out there and warmed
up. I'm working on a fewthings in my swing and kind of working
on recognizing my strengths and my weaknessesa little better. I've been trying to
(03:47):
put a round peg into a squarehole for about, I don't know,
three four years, really trying tochange something, and it hasn't really worked.
Every time I work on the changeon the range and then I go
to the golf course and limp backinto my old stuff. And what I
(04:10):
found out yesterday and it kind ofconfirmed what I thought I found out on
Monday, is that if I justwork with what I've got and not try
to hit a shot that looks pretty, just try to hit the shot that's
effective and that I can execute regularly, and things turn out a lot better.
(04:30):
I played very well, yes said, I don't want to talk a
lot about golf. Guy. There'sso much going on. By the way,
during the program today at eight o'clock, let me make sure I got
my times right. At eight o'clockthis morning, we're going to talk to
a guy named Norm Wade. Normis with the National Well he's with the
Texas chapter of the National Wild TurkeyFederation, a board member of that,
(04:51):
and there's a calling contest coming up. It's a little ways out. It's
about five weeks out somewhere in there. And so what I wanted to do
is talk about that and give youguys time if you think you're tough enough
to go out to that calling contest. It's in Athens, Texas, not
Greece, so it's not that far. You don't have to start walking now.
(05:14):
Yeah, but if you want togo to that and participate and test
your calling skills, like a lotof my friends that I used to try
to do back in the day withthe waterfowl hunting, duck calling, duck
and goose calling contests. I judgeda lot of those back when I was
at the newspaper, and it's fun, and people who are really into that
are really into contest calling and thecontest calling. I don't know, I'm
(05:39):
gonna ask way the norm the contestcalling in duck calling has gotten almost I
don't know. I don't want tosay it's out of control, but it's
theatric. It's theatric. That's agood word for it. And I don't
know if turkey calling has gotten tothat. I'm gonna put a little note
here. There we go I'll askhim about that or not, but one
(06:03):
way or the other, we'll findout about what the divisions are and what
it costs to get in what youcan win all those good things. Also
today at eight thirty, I'm goingto talk to a man named Dakus Keeslin,
whose name you may not have heardunless you are pretty tight with the
Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parksand Wildlife Department. He is the deputy
(06:26):
director of that, and I'm goingto talk to him about about whether or
not all the saber rattling and meanthings that were said when we talked when
first we heard about the new troutlimit. I'm kind of wondering if some
of that's died down at least itshould have. Anybody who cares about this
(06:49):
resource, I think should understand thatsometimes you have to that they're not managing
for today. They're managing for ten, fifteen, twenty years from now.
They're trying to make sure they're tryingto give these fish a chance to make
it all the way to the finishline. They've just they've started a brand
(07:11):
new race. Every time something happens, every time some there's a hurricane,
there's a heat wave, there's amajor freeze, a chemical spill. We
just had one down at Galveston recently. All of these things impact these fisheries
long term if you don't correct themimmediately so that the you could so that
(07:36):
you can expedite the recovery. It'sjust so important that we do that.
And there are still a whole lotof short sighted people, a whole lot
of selfish people who just don't likeany kind of change at all. I
can guarantee you that if I linedup one hundred people at RAND, it
(07:57):
would just have to be random selection. One hundred people who say they are
speckled trout fishermen. I could findyou three or four who would tell you
that they don't think there should beany limit on how many you can catch
or what size they are. Halfof them would be Cajun's. I'm half
Cajun. I can say that it'sokay, uh, Louisiana actually actually coming
(08:18):
around and realizing that their their troutresource isn't totally inexhaustible, realizing that they
did need to do some things, and they're doing it, and I'm glad
they're doing that. I'm glad theyare seven one three, two, one,
two five seven ninety Email me DougPike at iHeartMedia dot com. Uh,
Melvin, do you know if theAstros actually finished off the game winning
(08:41):
last night? Because I wasn't ableto stay up that late it's passed my
bedtime. That would make two ofus. I couldn't hang last night at
all. Well, that's that's agood point. You were here before I
was this morning. Who am Ito ask you? Shame on me,
Shame on me. I'm gonna guessthey did, because when I when I
turned out the lights and turned offthe television, they were up six to
(09:01):
one. I think what it wasthey'd had a six run inning, sent
eleven people to the plate, elevenbatters to the plate in that inning,
and so, and that's my lastrecollection of what was going on. I
felt pretty confident. Although what wasit? Just barely a week ago?
I think we watched one of thoseOh what is it? It was six
(09:24):
three, six three? Oh,that's fine. Them throw them a little
bone, let them think they gota chance. That'll that'll crush them.
Yeah, six three, that's cute. We win. Uh. The Astros
actually doing some pretty good ball playinglately, and I don't know what they're
gonna do with a Brew once heleaves sugar Land and comes on in.
(09:45):
They had him down in the Floridawhat do they call it, the Florida
barely barely professional League for a whilerehabbing, and now they've got him at
sugar Land rehabbing. Meanwhile, JohnSingleton looks aren't good at first base.
That's gonna be a hard that's ahard decision. It really is a bread
(10:07):
who deserves a chance to show thatthe rehab assignment worked. But Singleton's he
hadn't exactly been a hindrance while he'sbeen on the field. And if you
if you try to platoon those two, then neither of them gets into any
rhythm. And if you sit eitherof them down, then they're they're really
(10:33):
wasting away. At the professional level. These guys need to play a lot,
all of them do. That's howthey that's how they get better,
that's how they get hot. Youdon't get hot sitting on the bench,
that's for sure. Yeah, we'llsee how all that works out. Lots
of fishing going on. Let mecheck the wind. I haven't looked at
(10:54):
I haven't looked at any of that. This morning. I was busy prepping
for these two interviews, and I'mglad I did because I've got some good
questions, I think, for bothof them. And I'm gonna go immediately
to the wind, because the windhas been an issue for quite some time
now. There it is, allthe way down at the bottom of the
page. Of course it is.I had to scroll down there. I'm
(11:16):
gonna have to get up. I'mgona have to ramp up these reading glasses
that I have in here. I'mgonna bump them up one power. I
think it's not bad. After nineyears I've been wearing these silly things.
Oh yeah, here we go.Well, it's not as it's not as
bad. Okay. The good newsis it's still blowing and it's a south
southeast wind almost dead on shore rightnow. For what I'm looking at.
(11:39):
At windsurf dot com. I windsurfdot com. I like this site.
You can see the whole state ofTexas. You can see the entire state
of Texas. If only I canfind that. I don't even need to
see that. Oh, I canmove it around up here in the Galveston
Bay Complex. The numbers aren't thatbad. Thirteen twelve eleven, and again
(12:03):
all of it just dead on shore. So the good news is pushing salt
water into just shoving it right intothe bay up through the jetties and if
only, if only rollover pass,we're still open. Boy. Down south,
they opened Packery Channel, and fishinggets better almost immediately. Up here.
(12:24):
We're plugging the holes. We're pluggingthe holes. That's not good,
by the way. Down there inthe Corpus area north of Packery Channel,
they have opened up several new cutsthrough the beach to let even more gulf
water into the bay system, andwe plug them up. Not very smart.
(12:46):
A little farther down Matta Gorda fourteen, Oh, there's a big number,
port O'Connor eighteen. Nothing beyond thatthough. That's the highest wind bloss
I see punching into the coast thismorning. And again all of it.
Well, the farther down south yougo, the more southerly the flow becomes.
But up here it's almost almost duesoutheast. There's a hair more south
(13:09):
in it than east, but notmuch. It's yeah, it's not horrible,
and it's just gonna get better.Hopefully. I'd like to see at
some point soon the surf calmed downand green up, even up here where
it would be fun to go tothe beach and step out there into about
waste or chest deep water and seeif I can't catch a speckle trout slow
(13:33):
times last year for me, thefew times I got to go to the
beach and try to fish there justseemed to be always just a little something
wrong. No watered clear up,but I'd missed the bait, or I'd
missed the tide, or I'd missedsomething, and it just My batting average
was about like that of a Breiobefore he got sent down. Last year.
(13:54):
On trout trips to the beach,it was rough. I gotta tell
you it was rough. Oh well, move on, shall we? I
have somebody new to talk about it. And I'm so glad I've got this
done about. It's probably been aboutthree weeks ago. Now. It's driving
home from somewhere with my son, most likely some baseball event, and I
(14:18):
heard that sound. I don't knowif I can do it with my mouth.
You hear that. If you're drivingand you hear that, you know
what it is. It's a rock. A rock has hit your windshield.
And the first thing you do islook at your entire windshield carefully while you're
driving along still, and just inspectthe whole, every square inch of that
(14:39):
windshield. You inspect it for cracks. And I turned to my son and
I said, well, looks likewe got lucky this time, kid.
No cracks, Yay, I'm glad. No star, no crack, no
nothing until the next morning. AndI woke up the next morning and I
went out and I sat down inmy car and I looked, and from
(15:01):
over on the left where now allthese fancy little sensors and the there's a
black strip of something, whatever itis. I don't know that's whether that's
part of the sensors or not.But anyway, yeah, I did take
a rock hit and it did catchme in the part where I couldn't see
it, and it didn't spread untilovernight, so I never even got the
(15:24):
chance to get that crack part fixed. So I found out from the guy
from whom this is this is gonnatake a minute, Melvin. I found
out from the guy I bought myson's truck from about VIP Auto Glass.
He said, call them, they'lltake care of you. I said,
(15:45):
yeah, I gotta get that stuff. I found out you have to get
all these new windshields, the fancywindshields reprogrammed too into your car's computer.
So I called them and they offeredme the best price that I could find
to get at the new windshield andthe reprogramming done. And they just came
right here to the office and knockedit out. I said, how long
(16:07):
is this gonna take? Because Igot to do this, and I gotta
do that. I gotta do aradio show at noon all this stuff,
so we'll be out of here inless than two hours. And they were,
and they were, and everything isfixed and everything's fine. I paid
them. I couldn't couldn't wait topay them because I was glad to get
a nice, fresh new windshield onthat car Mine. And they did a
fantastic job. Vip Auto Glass twoeight one eight zero seven one four eight

gonna need it, and if youget a crack while you're on your way

could maybe do it same day.Worst case scenario, the next day,
wherever your car is gonna be,they will send a technician to you and
they'll take care of that two eightone eight zero seven fourteen eighty eight or

is Sports Talk seven ninety on thego with iHeartRadio Friends. You've got to
try. The conversation continues. Thisas the Doug type show. In our
home. At one point we hada forty five of the little round records
(17:19):
with the big hole in the middleof that song, and probably paid thirty
nine cents for the record. Andthat's how old we are. That's how
old I am. Now was thatdoing the days when the record truck used
to come around and play it inthe van record truck? I'm not sure
(17:44):
that we had a record truck. That what They just come around and sell
them to you out of the van. Yes, that's how it was.
They would play it on a loudspeaker, would play the record player would be
in the van. It would becloud speaker and it would play it in
Yeah, not in my neighborhood.I missed that. That sounds kind of
cool. I would have I'd havespent some of my lunch money on some
of those songs, especially the slowdancing ones as I got a little older.
(18:08):
You know, you know what Imean, movin Well, yeah,
you know what I mean. Ican tell by that smile on your face.
You know what I mean. Okay, let's move by the way,
Before we get any farther into thisprogram, I am going to take a
second to make sure that everybody inthis audience. I know my audience,
I think pretty well, and Iknow that most of you understand the meaning
(18:32):
of Memorial Day and what we are, what we are acknowledging. We're not
celebrating the loss of life of peoplewho serve this country. We're recognizing their
sacrifice on this Memorial Day. AndI'm gonna I'm gonna do what nobody in
radio is supposed to do, andwe're just gonna do five seconds of absolutely
(18:56):
nothing. And during that five seconds, all I want you to do is
just think about the people who sacrificedtheir lives over the course of this country's
history, so that you and Iand Melvin and everybody else in this country
can do whatever they want to dotoday and feel pretty good about it,
(19:18):
because without their sacrifice, there's areally good chance we might be speaking a
different language, we might be followinga different set of rules, although I'm
not really sure how many rules we'vegot. So take five seconds right now
and just remind yourself of everybody who'ssacrificed to give you what you've got.
(19:48):
All right, let's get back toit. Okay, that's really it's almost
I feel like we ought to justput ten minutes of silence. But the
sad part is, Melvin, ifI gave if I did ten minutes of
silence, you know what, somebodydo, they change the station. They
would There are people out here inthis audience who have lived a relatively short
life or relatively sheltered life, anddon't really understand how we got where we
(20:14):
got. They don't understand how manypeople gave their lives for you and me
to be able to do what we'redoing here today, for us to go
out and go play golf, orgo fishing, or go to the beach
and build a sand castle. Thatdidn't just magically happen. The magic,
(20:37):
the magic is the grit and grimeand broken bones and blood that was shed
so that somebody else couldn't come inhere and tell us what to do.
And I'm just hoping we're still capableof doing that because the way things have
gone lately, something's come. Idon't know what, I don't know when,
(21:00):
but something's coming. Uh. There'sjust just too many things have gone
south in the last few years forme to believe that nobody in the on
the rest of the planet. Whenso many people dislike us and dislike what
we stand for, there's that manyof them against us. Some of them
got to be talking seven seven ninetyemail on me, Doug Pike at iHeartMedia
(21:25):
dot com. Uh. As Imentioned later in the program, we're gonna
talk about turkeys, We're gonna talkabout coastal fishing. The Star Tournament,
Coastal Conservation Association's big, mega GiantMondo tournament started today. The Memorial Day
weekend kicks it off. It runsall the way through Labor Day. But
don't wait until then, don't wait. Go Ahead gets signed up so that
(21:49):
in case you do take advantage ofthis Memorial Day weekend, and in case
you do get down to the coastand you catch a redfish that's got a
tag in it. I don't evenknow what the tags say on them.
I've never caught one, and I'veseen pictures of them, but I've forgotten
what's on the tags. But ifyou are registered and you catch a tagged
(22:11):
redfish, a certain particular tag redfish, and you can pass the polygraph,
you just won yourself an F oneto fifty, a boat, a trailer,
and a motor. Pretty good price. One point nine million dollars in
prizes all together. I'll tell youmore about that later on Star Tournament all
(22:33):
summer long. Also, here's thething. If you've got kids, this
gives you an excellent excuse. Ifthere's anybody in your family that thinks you
fish too much, who thinks youfish too much to be correct, there's
anybody in your family who thinks thatyou overdo it with the outdoors, just
say, hey, it's for thekids. We could win a scholarship for
the kids. That would free upsome money for us to take a wonderful
(22:57):
vacation while they're away college. There'sa lot of If you need help with
reasons to take your kids fishing, just email me. I'll give you a
hundred of them. One hundred validreasons to take your kids fishing. If
you've got kids who've never caught afish before and you want to introduce them
to it just on a lark thisweekend. I can give you places near
(23:22):
where you live, where you arevirtually guaranteed if you follow directions, virtually
guaranteed that they'll catch a fish. It's just not that hard. It takes
a little effort, it takes alittle research. Other than that, it's
not that hard talking to you,Melvin. You know I'm talking to you
(23:44):
your son anytime. If I'm you'reout of school. Okay, you just
lost another excuse not to take himfishing. He's out of school, Well
so are we. It's been awhile though, been a hot minute?
Is that people still say a hotminute? Okay, I'm just checking.
I used to rely on Adam tofind out what the super young people are
(24:07):
talking about, because then I wouldhe would give me something to take home
and say in front of my son, to make my son think that I'm
in and that they can't say anythingwithout me knowing well of hip man,
holy cow, Nextnia, I mightbreak a hip. That'd be about as
close as I'm getting man h sevenone three two one two five seven ninety

What do you say we we changeup our structure around here Melbourne and hit
a break on time? Shooter's CornerBarbara Highway at twenty nine Street down there

met. Sending just yesterday. YesterdayI got another email from a friend.
(24:49):
Hey man, I got a Remingtonseven hundred two seventy. I gotta get
it worked on. It was mygrandfather's rifle and it got put away wrongly
by somebody, and it's got acouple of issues. Where should I take
it and without hesitation take it downto Shooter's Corner. It'll take you about
thirty minutes to get there, maybeforty five. It'll be the most productive
(25:12):
forty five minutes they'll ever spend onthe road because he's gonna get that gun
fixed. It's gonna be fixed right, and it's not gonna give him any
trouble ever. Again, probably I'vesaid, I don't know how many of
my listeners down there. It's anold school gun stores, what it is,
that's all it is. Everybody whoworks in there is well, there's
some younger people, but they've gotold gun souls. If that makes any
(25:36):
sense. The place smells like agun store. And if you don't know
what a gun store smells like, close your eyes, walk through the door,
and then just inhale through your noseand you'll know what a gun store
smells like. Guns Ammo Reloading supplies, optics, a little bit of camos,
some cool mounts from around the world, because that's what they do when
they're not at the store. Theseshooters Corner TX dot com v shooters cornertx

This is Sports Talk seven ninety onlineat Sports seven ninety dot com.
Now more Doug Fight. I gotall kinds of stuff going on on my
email stuff. I'll get to himin just a minute because I want to
(26:23):
go talk to this guy. Let'swhat do you hey, before you touch
any buttons, Melvin, do youthink it will work when I click it
or not? I think it area dollar for a dollar? You think
it's gonna work A dollar's worth?Yeah, dollars worth, that's pretty big
money. Oh, oh you dollar? What's up? Jimmy West, Good
(26:44):
morning, Good morning man. Howare you. Oh, I'm blessed.
We're all blessed. You were listen, I was listening to you. You
know, we're talking about Memorial andwhat it's doing, for what it means,
and we went through the five secondlittle deal and then you went out
and I agree with you, butwe are definitely blessed to live in this
(27:04):
country. Well, no doubt,no kidding, but uh, it's uh,
you know, you look at what'sgoing on overseas and in this world.
It's just it's a horrible, justa horrible thing. What's going on.
It really is. And we're gonnahave to fix it ourselves because we're
(27:25):
not getting a lot of help anywhereelse, that's for sure. When was
the last time you heard of anycountry sending America money? I know,
you know, and we ship itby the billions and trillions all over the
world. You have to be uhyeah, or you have to be uh
an illegal alien. Then you canget a big cos of money. They'll
(27:45):
fit you up and uh give youget you started, no doubt. Don't
get me started. Man, talkabout hunting and fishing before we get off
in the weeds. Yeah, that'sthe truth. What's going on to I'm
really not fishing. I uh uhCoast Guard and I we got twisted,
got the wrong way. Anyway,it took me a year and a half
(28:07):
and I actually did get my license. I had issues. I did have
issues with them, a couple ofissues. They were extremely slow, and
uh, make it. To makea long story short, I wasn't sure
I was going to get it,so I told them, just stick it,
you know what I'm and and uh, I decided to shift gears.
(28:29):
I've got some I've got some land, and I've kind of I went into
some doing some real estate and model. Well I'm not I no, not
not. I didn't get my realestate. I didn't get my real estate
license or as as you know, opening it up and and other people's real
estate. I'm selling my own property. I said, that's a property in
(28:52):
Crystal Beach. I went to Commissioner'scouple total lots, told a couple of
lots, and uh, I pickedthe building. R he cover on another
one and I'm put hearing off anotherone. So you know, it's not
a lot of property and it mayonly be short lived. But I've been
pretty successful in the short term. And uh, but as I say it,
(29:15):
still don't have deep pockets what Iwant to do, you know.
So, and the real estate marketis really and it's pretty flat. You
know. People want to try toget what they can for it and they
think it's just you know it andit did boom a few years ago and
there's still some moving, but it'sit's not like it was not at all.
(29:37):
So you know, I have tobe real careful at what I do.
Yeah, I don't blame. Idon't blame. Yeah, But anyway,
you know, I'm getting ready forhunting season. I'm heading over here
and get on tractor right now.I've got we've had so much rain just
without finished my stuff disked and planted, and then all of a sudden it
started raining and it just shut medown. And uh, I've got some
(30:00):
South Zone stuff down here, anduh that's what I got. My tractor
moved and I started disking it yesterday. And for the most part, it's
still early. It's it's dried up, but it's still got its wet spots.
But uh, you know, we'reonly three months away from the season.
I know, I talked about thatlast week. It's you you're gonna
blink and it's gonna be time. It's gonna be honest, sir. Yep,
(30:23):
I've got a little forty acre field. I'm gonna throw some milled out.
It's a it's like a ninety daycrop for the sures brown top.
And uh, you know on theeast side over here, we don't have
the white wings that are down south, say Santon and down south in my
backyard. Holy yeah, I gotwhite wings all over Sugarland. Man.
(30:45):
You know, we got them herein the town too, but for tunning
them, they don't last for acouple of weeks. And uh, they're
pretty much gone over here. Sowhat we have is morning doves and one
thing, the white wings that eatsa millet, but it's a smaller seed,
okay. And uh, the youknow, the white wings like milo.
(31:06):
They prefer, you know, sunflowersand milo, a bigger, larger
seed where the mourning doves really dumb. They'll eat the milo, but they
don't really like the sunflowers that well. They'll eat them, but it seemed
to be too big, right. They like like that millet or like goat
weed or that mesican weed. It'sa smaller than a goat weed seed.
(31:27):
And that's we have a lot ofthat over here. But any who,
Yeah, it's just I wish wehad more white wings like they did down
south. You know, that's justa it's spurred for us. Well yeah,
but if you've got plenty of morningdoves, it's that's a good problem
to have to there's nothing wrong withthat. We get those migrators you know,
(31:48):
come in, you know, butit doesn't compare our dove season just
doesn't come our dove honey doesn't compareto what it is down south. Tech,
what's your gut tell you about duckseason? Real quick? Well,
I mean it's I had a lotof I kept water on my reservoirs and
well I still, uh have bluewings. They're just about gone now finally.
(32:13):
But just last week I saw probablynot a lot, but you know
a few. If you saw three, that's a lot. It's the end
of May, Jimmy, Holy cow, I know, and you know,
and and I thought kind of whatyou did, but I thought, you
know what, it's been raining. It's just been star point and it hasn't
got hot yet. Yeah, that'swhat I will say. Now it has
(32:37):
and uh, you know, theI got a lot of tree ducks on
it. And uh and black ducksthere are they are? Everything's nesting now.
Well, I wish they'd open upa wood duck season on the golf
course. I play. Buddy,Oh, buddy, you know you can
raise them, you know, onyour own property. And you and who
(33:00):
knows what you're gonna do on yourown property? Who knows? Boy?
And had no truer words weerever spokenfrom East Texas? Who knows what you're
gonna do on your own property?Jimmy, man, it's so good to
hear from you, it really is. Yeah, thanks for the call,
budd. I'm gonna pick up fishingthis winter. I brought my boat home
(33:20):
last year. Let me tell youyou got a minute. I got a
minute. I do have a minute. Okay. I got crossways with a
coast cord. They sent me adeal. It went all the way into
a commandant over in North Frok,Virginia a letter and told me that if
I got caught fishing with my licensenot approved yet, that they were gonna
confiscate my boat and oh my word, and find me twenty five thousand dollars.
(33:44):
Oh my gosh, So it actuallyshut me down. It's happened over
that happened, you know, Anduh, I just I said, you
know, what, the hell withthem? I don't have to do that.
And as I get older, Ifind myself not wanting to do it
full time anyway. So I reasonI shifty gears and decided to try to
(34:04):
do some real estate. Good foryou, good for you. Yeah,
they they threatened me. I meanI had to sign. I had to
I had to fill out and signa paper state stating that I would not
do it, to send it tothem so that way they would they would
have that in court. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Oh my gosh,
holy cow man, Well that's agood reason to take a few days off.
(34:28):
Jimmy took me a year and ahalf to get my license, dune,
holy cow man, a year anda half to get my license,
and stated, what all right,Well, done's done though, water under
the bridge, as they say atPelican Island. What man? Anyway,
(34:49):
you know what it's it's fixing ithot again in summer's here, and I'll
want to fish during the summer time. I'll do some beach fishing. I'll
do some weight fishing, you know, on the beach. And let's see
what happened. Quad Loop fishing inthe summer. Man, Just stand out
there in your underwear. It doesn'tcold running on through. I'm gonna do
some real estate and i'm gonna buildthis little RV cover and I'm gonna sell
(35:10):

(35:30):

know how I'm gonna do that.Okay, I'm confirming our call with with
norm he was wrestling with today ortomorrow, and we'll we'll sort that out
at the top of the hour. We're gonna talk to normal. Wait.
Oh, I need to take abreak, don't it, Okay, Melman,
Okay, boy, I gotta finda way to win that dollar back
(35:53):
by hitting a break on time. That's easy money. Yeah, yeah,
because yeah, you want to.Yeah, Doug bike owes me a dollar
and he won't pay me. That'swhat you want, you want to hang
that over my head, No way, I think I have some ones.
Actually, I don't know. Youknow what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna
go out to my truck after workand I'm gonna get four quarters out of
(36:15):
my little change bucket and I'll bringthem up here and slap them on your
desk. Black Horse Golf Club twoninety at front Well. Take two ninety
to Fry Road, hang a south, go down about three four miles and
there you will start seeing golf courseon both sides of the road. Watch
on the west side of the roadgoing south for a gate that says black
(36:36):
Horse Golf Club. That'll be ahint that it's time to put on your
blinker and turn. And once youget in there, they've got two golf
courses so they can get twice asmany people out all day long. You
know, you can get in ifyou get in there and get settled a
little bit, even if you haven'tmade a tea time. Most day.
Now the holiday weekend may be alittle different, but most days, most
(36:58):
days you can go in there, get signed up for kind of next available,
and by the time you can goout and hit a small bucket of
balls and get warmed up a littlebit. They'll be calling your name.
It'll be time to go to thatfirst tee on the north or the South
course. Fantastic place. Lots ofpeople out there wanting to help you with
your game, help keep you fed, and water going around, and they
(37:21):
got a great grill out there. You want to get a little food before
or after you play. There's lessonsat the far end of the range.
There is a membership option too, which is fantastic in addition to discounts in
the pro shop, in addition topreferred tea times. The thing I like
most about that membership option is unlimitedrange use. You can hit balls to
(37:43):
your fingers bleed if you want to, and then go down to the other
end of the range and get somelessons to make you better, and then
come back up and hit some moreballs with the noosewing. Black Horsecolf Club
dot com is the website you canmake a tea time for yourself right now,
right there, black Horse Golf Clubdot com. This is Sportstock seven

seven one three, two one twofive seven ninety email me Dougpike at iHeartMedia
dot Com. Uh, and Iowe, where did it go? Boy?
It's all the way down there now. Colt. Colt hanging there.
Man, I'm gonna get with you. He's looking for someplace and I'll throw
(38:52):
this out here now because I don'tget up to this part of town.
Uh. He's gonna take me upon needing some information on getting a kid
fishing. He's got a I thinkit's a five year old. Yeah,
five year old wants to take hissun fishing for the first time. And
he is up around like Cyprus andHockley And that's a little out of my
Sugarland running area. But if anybody'sgot some water up there that's public,
(39:15):
and that he could go chum upreally good and either catch a catfish or
two, or maybe some perch orsomething. Let me know, because I
need to help him out. Gota five year old at five year old's
ready, I'm sure he's itching tobe fishing. We'll get him hooked up.
Somebody helped me out with that particulararea, and then I'll give him
(39:37):
my super deluxe strategy for taking advantageof that area. Let's go talk to
Dave. Hey, Hey, hey, Melvin, I'll bet you a dollar
when I push this button it works. Oh we're even now, Guitar day.
What's Upboddy. Well, I'm watchingsome storks over here with the white
plume on top and walking around lookingfor stuff. I'm here at the American
(40:00):
Leagues and all right, and thenI saw some squirrels and I saw a
lot of some butterflies over here. But no, hey, I don't know.
No they they is, don't they? Well? I thought, yeah,
got storks, man, don't theybring babies? Yes? What I
(40:22):
heard with us is it? Hey? But I mean this one here is
I'm looking at it on the otherside of the treeover boy, she picking
up and don't mess with them becauseoh man, they eat all the creditors.
Yeah, let them. Let thembe, man, they're helping you
clean up, bro Well. Isent you some pictures of its team Rubicon
(40:44):
disaster response and they got the donationof the mission on wheels trailer that's over
here where they hook water up toit and they fantast showers and everything.
Yeah, so I think there ishere. That's why I'm on the far
end of the property, gover hereso I can kind of be quiet.
But maybe tomorrow then, because youdon't come on till eight, maybe I
(41:07):
can get a hold of the mainladies. That's she's the head lady for
the whole thing, and then Ican get you to do an interview with
her. But yeah, you know, they were very very nice. Uh
And like I said, I sentpictures to you, and and they re
trying. I'm looking. I can'tfind them. I haven't found them yet
(41:28):
at pacebook. I know they're inthere somewhere, but my stuff gets filled
up pretty quick, so I'm looking. I'll do I'll just do a search
for you. That's what I'll do. Yeah, hey, And then but
then that's I'm being quiet. Backhere, but it is nice out here,
and we got a little suttle bitof a breeze. Yeah, And
like I said, oh, Ithink they're inside there in the air conditioning,
(41:51):
sleeping in arma cots and all that. And then they get up and
yeah, I mean, God,bless them, I mean god, you
know, for them to and it'sall they do this all for free,
you know. Yeah. And thenoh, if I made on the records,
man, I got a stack ofrecords that you wouldn't just all in
(42:15):
mint condition. I'm talking about.I gave my brother a four for a
dollar Johnny paycheck that was signed byhim, that was given to you by
Miss Hele and base send his houseover there in Conroe in his museum over
we have a museum kind of overthere. But yeah, for for a
dollar. Holy cow, that's beena while. Huh. Well, I'll
(42:39):
tell you what. And like youwere talking about, when we started learning
how to play, my aunts anduncles they go buy album like Redhead,
a Stranger or whatever, you know, Willie Nelson or whoever or whatever.
Oh and what was that one overthere? I can't think the name of
it, but blue Blue Eyes, great song. Yeah, that was Yeah,
(43:02):
that was you know, that wasgood, and then you know yet
all the other ones. But youknow, like I said, I'm glad
I'm way back over here. Somewaking nobody up, all right, I
got moving. Cut on out ofhere, all right, Pardoner, I'll
see you bet. Audios, allright, let me catch that. Yeah,
(43:22):
I don't want to get too farinto what's going on up there,
because I got a ton of stuffgoing on here and we're almost out of
time for this segment. Coming upat the top of the hour, we're
going to talk to Norm Wade fromthe National Wild Turkey found Federation, the
Texas chapter that they got a big, big competition coming up on the way
(43:43):
out. If you want to ifyou want to dust off your turkey shooting
skills, you might want to headout to American shooting centers this morning.
It's gonna be a beautiful weekend forshooting. Actually, it's gonna be a
little warm in the afternoons. I'llcan see that. But hey, what
better practice for dove season then goingout and burning some powder on sporting clays
when it's ninety degrees. That's gonnabe just like dove season, unless it's
(44:07):
hotter in September. They've got threesporting clays courses at American Shooting Centers.
They have got ten or twelve trappingskeet fields. I can't remember how many.
There's always room out there. Everytime I've gone out, there's always
one of them that's open. There'salso five stand setups, several of those
around the property. And then ofcourse the pistol range starting at five yards,
(44:28):
creeping out into rifles that goes tosix hundred yards, and then there
are beginners areas for wing shooting. There's a little pop up rim fire range
where you can take your twenty twoand see how tough you are with that
out to two hundred and fifty yards. I might say that's a long ways
with a little twenty two, butit's fun fun when you finally plink one
(44:49):
out there. It may take awhile, but if you're good with it,
you can do it. They haveplenty of instruction out there to professional
instruction. If you're not breaking enoughclays or you're not punching enough bull's eyes,
they'll help you get better with yourshooting. Even if it's self defense,
they can help you with that aswell. American Shooting Centers are on
West tim Or Parkway between Katie andHighway six. Very easy to find.
(45:12):
You cannot miss those giant berms outthere in the middle of Attics Reservoir.
Well it's dry now, thank goodness. American Shooting Centers dot Com is a
website. Go check them out.Very safe, very fun place to enjoy
the shooting sports. American Shooting Centersdot Com. This is the Doug Pike
Show, brought to you by AmericanShooting Centers, Guns, shooting and Instruction
(45:37):
since nineteen eighty nine. Now here'sDoug Pike. All right, second hour
starts now. Thank you all forlistening. I certainly do appreciate it.
On this Memorial Day weekend Saturday morning, uh as promised, I want to
go ahead, and I'm gonna gethim on the phone here has promised.
We're going to move now to NormWade, state board member from the National
(46:00):
Wild Turkey Federation. I want toget this conversation in while there's plenty of
time for the best turkey hunters andcallers in this audience to make their plans,
because the Texas State Turkey Calling Contestset for June twenty ninth. Up
there, in essence, welcome aboardand Norm how you doing man? I'm
doing great, Dougie. I appreciateyou having me on. Let me try
(46:20):
let me try some on you. How's that? I just do that with
my mattle. I can't do itany now. Well I can do that
with my natural awards, and socan many other callers out there. But
it's not hard to do, butjust keep practicing the thing. I finished
about like forty ninth place or soA right, oh maybe lower? Oh
(46:40):
no, that made me feel horrible, not even forty nine. So thanks
for your time this morning. Ireally do appreciate it. First of all,
before we get to the competition, give me a little history of the
National Wild Turkey Federation. Well, the National Wild Turkey Federation as a national
organization started in nineteen seven dying bymister Tom Rogers. And he did that
(47:02):
out for the passion of conservation efforts. And I think it's West Virginia find
not mistaken. But that information youcan go to NWTF dot org and will
you get a swell of information aboutwhen the organization was started. Uh.
There was recently a video about calledthe Colonel and the Fox that came out
(47:25):
and it chroniclized the start of conservationby Colonel Tom Moore and Tony Hawk's father.
That's a really good video to lookat. I think it's still up
on YouTube if the listeners want togo ahead and get that. But it's
a great organization. We do alot here, not only in Texas,
(47:46):
but also across the nation to bringforth the information and about the conservation efforts
that's happening in every individual state, especially here in Texas. Texas. We're
going to stick in Texas right now. Let's get to that competition. How
long has this competition been going on? The competition been going on for quite
(48:07):
a while. Our recently took overthe helm of being a coordinator about three
four years ago, but it's beengoing on, oh since I was a
nineteen ninety six or so. Okay, yeah, it's got a history.
Then it's always in athens ors thatmove around. No, it moves around.
(48:28):
We try to coordinate because Texas isso big and he can't expect everyone
to drive yet, so we tryto move it around the state in various
location to draw in callers and notinconvenience then without having to take an airline
flight to get from oh, mygoodness, Yeah, that would be that
would I don't know if you couldwin enough money to cover airfare these days.
How many divisions we talking about?Norm At the Texas Division, we're
(48:52):
talking about five different division. There'sall the Hunter division, the Jakes for
which is open to our youth andstuff, and the opening the state.
Now, the state qualifies you.The winner has to win a state competition
and that qualifies you to go tothe Grand National and Joint at Big State.
(49:14):
Yes, yes, sir, that'sthe big stage right there. We
have five divisions there. How manyinterests you expected this year? What would
you think? I'm trying to getincreased? Texas is a deer a deer
state, not real known for true, but we're trying to We're trying to
change that and we're seeing more andmore Texas hunters getting involved with turkeys now
(49:37):
and we're trying to increase that.Over the past few years, our number
has been ranging around fifteen to twenty, but I'm hopefully going to try to
get the word out and the messageout to increase that as we change from
generation to the generation. We havea lot of kids that are expressing interest
and showing interest in that so that'swhere we're trying to spark the flame to
(49:58):
get these new youth and first timehunters. I was recently on an adult
mentor hunt for first time adults whonever turkey hunt, and I called in
fort birds for a gentleman. Hewas really excited with that. So we
want to expite and we want toignite, and we wanted to get everybody
on board here in the state ofTexas. Now miss east of the Mississippi,
(50:22):
it's a big thing. West ofthe Mississippi not so well, big
state. We'll get some people inhere. You realize you just crushed my
turkey calling dreams when you told methat I couldn't even finish forty ninth and
there's only like twenty five people inthe whole competition. Well, well,
no, that puts you up therefrom well, I'm speaking on the Grand
National stage where you have thousands ofpeople, fortynight would be a big,
(50:45):
big deal. So don't get thisscaraed. Fortynight in Texas transposes to Grand
National as well. You play fortynight out of maybe two thousand people that
he's pretty good there, Yeah, that would be yeah, No, Norm
Wade, hear from the Texas NationalWild Turkey Federation. UH, Is there
(51:05):
any one of the reasons. It'shard. It's hard for you guys to
put up a ton of money,But I'm sure you've got some sponsors who
help out with prizes and whatnot.Who's behind you in this national wild Turkey
stuff here in Texas well? UH, bass Pros are basically number one.
They're doing doing on the national levelsas well as the local levels. So
(51:28):
we have some sponsorship through NWTF bassPro, Kabela's Meal Deer Foundation UH.
And there's there's a few others thatI don't have that information in front of
me, but we do have somesponsor. Apex is one of them.
There'll be a TSS shot and thereWe're really they're helping us get the word
out and we're doing vice versa withthem. And Hoffpower UH is one of
(51:52):
our big sponsors as well, sowe do have some backing there. We
also partner up with Texas Park andWildlife on a lot of you know,
youth events, adult events and soforth like that. So we're not we're
not doing this alone. We're partingup with many other organization that's for sponsorship
and support. Are the are thecontest entrance. Are there guys who go
(52:14):
from contest to contest all over thecountry. Is kind of like duck calling.
Yes it is, Yes it isbecause a lot of times it qualified
for what I call the big stagesNationally. You have to win a state
company somewhere to qualify to yeah somewhere. So you may not win, say,
say for example, in Oklahoma,Well that guy say, I was
(52:34):
good enough, but I took secondplace. But if I go to Texas
and win and get first plaid, then I get an invite to Grand Nationals.
So he may not win in hisown state, but if he can
go to another state that has acalling contest and win there, he gets
qualified to go to Grand national andthat is a big, big draw.
When we have our convention, nowit is talk about what the judges are
(52:55):
looking for. What kind of callsdo do you have to do? How
long is a routine? All thatstuff? Well, the Turkey call is
the sounds that the judges will askyou. We have a list of various
sounds that we were like our competitorsto try, and the MC would say,
okay, let me hear the callof the hen yelp. Now keep
(53:15):
in mind. These judges are seasonedveterans. They do down in the woods
and they can actually under Oh okay, close my eyes, Yes, that's
a real turkey. So we tryto emulate the actual sounds are close to
the actual sounds that the caller canmake, and the judges will give them
a score based upon how well theyperformed that particular call. And there's the
(53:36):
hen yelp, the key key run, the fighting per the yelps. So
if you can emulate those calls almostas if it was a real turkey,
the better. Now I can dothat my natural voice. And there's a
couple other guys on the state boardthat can do that as well. One
of the guys was Dylan Taylor. He won last year and he went to
(54:00):
the Grand National. I don't knowhow he did on that stage, but
the various calls are great and itteaches you so when next spring you come
out, Okay, I can makethis sound. I can make that sound,
because you want to talk the languageof the wild turkey, and if
you can emulate them. And theysaid, well there's another turkey over here,
let me go and see. Speakingof turkeys, how is the Texas
(54:22):
turkey population these days. The turkeypopulation based in part of Jason Harden of
Texas Wildlife, Texas Park and Recreation. He does a lot of turkey restoration
in the area. We're roughly Texasleading the nation. The country is a
little bit over five hundred thousand turkeysin the state of text Well, we
(54:45):
got a big stake though. Thathelps, doesn't it. Yeah, yeah,
we got a big steak. Andnot all those turkeys in the same
place either. Boy, you knowabout half of them are driving on the
Southwest Freeway. Best I can tellmore. Oh yeah, well, if
you go into hill country, you'llsee him along the side of the roads
there. Hey, what are youdoing? So we do. We're proud
(55:05):
of that part that we have thehighest population of turkey, but we're lacking
as far as turkey hunters out inthe turkey world. You would think that
that would be a big draw fromfrom all around the country come to Texas.
We got more turkeys than anybody,That's what is happening. We have
a lot of people, We havea lot of people come from out of
state here in Texas because of thelarge population, but we don't have a
(55:31):
lot of turkey hunters per se thatare actual Texans here. Now that number
is slowly increasing. That hunter realized, hey, you know what, I
can send my deer season and starthunting turkeys because a lot of guys,
I mean, like you say,we are a white till country, no
doubt, no doubt. Yeah, and a lot of people, well,
(55:51):
I see turkeys, but I'm deerhunting, so I don't want to shoot
a turkey in case the big booneand crocket comes out. So they wait
till spring. And of course they'rethe turkeys. Their pattern change from fall
to spring, so where you seethem in the fall while you're deer hunting,
they may not be in the samearea that you, yeah, turkey
hunting, so you got to evolveand adapt and change as the turkey patterns
(56:15):
change as well, and knowing whenthe call, when the set up,
and everything else, you know, fun, having fun turkey hunting is also
as a sidebar to that, it'salso a good scouting tool for your deer
because unless you're actually taking a shotthe deer coming through the turkeys you're coming
through, You're going to see allkinds of wildlife out there. And as
(56:37):
that is the fact of matters,I've got a trailer cameras that sends me
photographed to my cell phone. AndI've had a bruiser buck that come to
this feeder every morning with about twentyfive turkeys. I've been watching him since.
I passed him up during the bothseason this year because I wanted to
get a little bit bigger. Butthere's actually about twenty five thirty turkeys.
(56:59):
I don't know if he's following theturkeys and the turkey's following. Yes,
yes, that's hilarious utilizing that asa strategic tracking point for turkeys and white
tail. So you hit the nailon the head there, you can.
Hey, look if I'm hurting turkeys, I'm also scouting for my season year,
Sir Norm Wade from the Texas chapterof the National Wall Turkey Federation.
(57:22):
Can we go to t x nwTF dot org and find out about that
tournament that the competition? Yes,yes you can this this w w t
x n WTF dot org and ithas the registration and it has the flyer
with all the information on it andthe calls for each calling division and so
(57:43):
forth. It's very reasonable to ourwebsite. I noticed that the entry fees
are very reasonable, so yes, yeah, in this and age way the
economy. If we're not trying tobreak the brink, but we want to
excite people and inspire people to comeout, basically women, women and our
young kids. Yes, sir NormWade, Thank you very much, my
friend. I appreciate it. Doug, and you have the last weekend?
(58:05):
Uh huh, you too, Bubbe. All right, let's come. Yeah,
I'm gonna have to take the break. Bread, hang on, hang
on, bread, you hang on, you held on this long. Give
me another couple of minutes to getthrough this break, and you will be
first up and we'll give you whatevertime you need. All the way out,
I'll tell you about Belleville Meat Market. All the way up there.
Well, it's in the middle ofa little town of Belleville, about northwest
(58:27):
from here where I'm sitting. Fortyfive minutes maybe somewhere in there. Not
that long, especially since you're gonnabe rewarded when you get there with delicious
meat products. You're gonna be rewardedwith beef, chicken, and pork cut
the way you want. You canbe rewarded with a half of cow if
you want to take that home, they'll process that any way. You want
eighty five fifteen ground beef three fiftynine a pounds for a ten pound pack.
(58:52):
And if you've got any kids inthe house, or or you're a
healthy eater, and you could probablygo through that in a couple of weeks,

Fan on air and on Facebook atcontact Back to the Doug Pike Show.
Welcome back Doug Pike Show on SportsTalk seven ninety. Thanks for listening.
(01:00:00):
Certainly do appreciate it. If youfancy yourself a turkey caller, it sounds
like Turkey or Texas would be thestate to get in to enter the contest
in hopes of getting to the Nationalswith only a couple of dozen people.
It looks like and you know,I think it was that one of the
Outdoor show, the Hunting Show herethe Hundreds Extravaganza a couple of years ago,
(01:00:22):
I think did a turkey calling contestand it's interesting to listen. They're
not quite so dramatic as the duckcallers, but they get into it.
They're strutting across the stage making allkinds of noise. All right, let
me get to Brad. He's beenwaiting a long time here. What's that
bred? You know while listen toyour show all the time. Thank you.
(01:00:46):
I always use a guide when Igo fishing, okay, because I
just don't I don't have a clueby a lot of things. And so
you know your strengths, you know, your weaknesses up, especially with fishing.
Yeah, I don't want to golike you know, I met Dave,
(01:01:07):
one of your frequent call guys.I mean, even if he wanted
to go with me and show methe ropes, or I wanted to ask
you like, uh, go,I'm gonna go buy a little fish and
ride at Walmart or something and godown go down Galveston Way, not Texas
City, dyke. I've tried that. I didn't really care for that.
(01:01:30):
Go ahead, just something like hiddingwater hole that uh hey man, I
know place for blah blah, youknow, something like that, not where
the whole public wants to go.So, I mean I didn't know because
me driving to Galveston, I wouldn'thave a clue. I mean I could
drive off into you know where there'sthe ocean and just I mean, I
(01:01:54):
just don't know. And I justwanted to either get your knowledge or maybe
somebody like I met Dave once upona time, he knows who. I
am sure if he even be willingto volunteer and go with me a couple
of saturdays from now, well, here's what you're gonna You're gonna have to
(01:02:15):
at some point, Brad, you'regonna have to just kind of take the
reins and uh, maybe look onlinefor some wade fishing spots in Galveson or
best walk in spots in Galveston. If you if you hit the places right
there, there are a lot ofplaces you can go without a boat and
(01:02:37):
catch fish in the Galveson Bay area. There's a ton of places you can
go. If you're not there onthe right day and the conditions are wrong,
you're gonna swear it's the wrong spotevery time you go, and you
kind of have to learn how tohow to follow the tide. You want
a nice moving tide when you're going. You want nice clean water if you
can find it now on the beachfront. That's tough to come by some
(01:03:00):
times. But when it does cleanup, and it will, that's when
you need to be either on oneof those little rock groins down there or
in the water, or maybe walkinga shoreline of a bay or something like
that looking for redfish. There's aton of places, and I would encourage
(01:03:20):
you to look online and dig upa little information there. See. Wolf
Park's a good place to go,the beach front of it. Yeah,
there are a hundred places to go, but you have to go at the
right time, and that's timing uphere on this end of the coast is
probably half the battle. If you'rein the right place at the wrong time,
(01:03:43):
you've wasted your time. But ifyou're you, and if you're in
the wrong place at the right time, the people who are in the right
place are doing better than you.But until you kind of go down there
and kick the training wheels off andmake a few decisions, not just at
not just at random. Don't justdrive down there and stop at the first
(01:04:06):
place you see and start fishing, but do a little research and build some
confidence in yourself, and then godown there and fish, and if you
catch them, take notes on whyand how you did it. And if
you don't, make notes on thattoo. Where was the wind coming from,
what was the tide that day, what were the weather conditions that day,
(01:04:26):
what was the wind? All ofthat stuff matters. And once you
start building up a little bit ofa reserve of information and options, suddenly
you're gonna say, Okay, todayI need to go here. Today I
need to go there, And that'swhen you're gonna start catching fish. You
don't have to have somebody hold yourhand down there you can go catch fish
(01:04:49):
being a regular instead of a onetimers. Yeah. Well, the only
difference between a one timer and meis that I've been more than one time,
and I built up you probably well, since I've been driving basically fifty
years of experience going down and fishingthe coast, and so I've been every
(01:05:09):
place. I believe me, I'vehad plenty of empty trips when I was
young, trying to learn where togo and when to go, and making
mistakes and thinking I knew it all, and then all of a sudden you
realize you don't know a whole lot, and you keep going until you learn
more. You can do it.Is Galvis in a better type situation or
in someplace like Conro, Well, you're catching different fish altogether. Conro is
(01:05:31):
probably one of the best catfish lakesin the whole country. If you can
find some place to go up toConroe and find a place along a bulkhead
somewhere and chum the heck out ofit for thirty minutes, throw a bunch
of range tubes in there, throwa bunch of corn soaked in vanilla in
there in front of you, andthen go go drink a cup of coffee
and eat a club sandwich and walkback out there, and there'll be catfish.
(01:05:54):
There'll be catfish up in that chumalmost any day of the week.
So that's a little safer bet thanthe coast. The coast is harder to
learn. But if you do learnit and you do find your spots,
you'll catch fish. You will. There's play a fish to catch. You
just gotta you gotta invest a littletime and effort. Yeah, I got
(01:06:15):
a couple of people I gotta catchearly morning or late night. Early morning
typically is good there, and that'sit's got an asterisk by it. But
yeah, rise and shine, bethere, be there just a few minutes
before the sun comes up, Especiallyfor the beach front, when you're talking
about clean water in the in thebeach front, early early is better.
(01:06:40):
And when you get down there,if you're gonna walk that beach, don't
even get your feet wet until there'sa little bit of light on the horizon.
Just walk the beach and throw intothat first gut. There are gonna
be fishing there. And I've seena lot of people just wade right through
trout trying to be the first guyto the second bar, and they all
the fish are behind them when theyget there. So there's a lot to
(01:07:00):
talk about. Shoot me an emailand I'll send you some stuff to talk
to think about. What's your email, Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com.
Thanks, yes, sir, Thankyou. I appreciate the call. Man,
all right, Dub's been waiting along time as well. What's up,
Dub, Hey, good morning toyou. How's it going today?
I'm good man. Thanks? Tellyou what reason? I was calling in
(01:07:25):
digging around out in the garage lastweek and I found my old Benjamin Talent
business caliber all right, did aGoogle search on the thing of my Google
foo has been really poor lately.Got all the information I could on it.
All right, thing goes back manufacturedin nineteen eighty I believe wows Okay,
(01:07:51):
got on the internet again. Iwas trying to find local businesses that
might support the air guns, thatsell tellots, that might sell seals.
The silly thing. I pumped itup. It still holds pressure. Well,
okay, but I would you know, I'm gonna clean it up,
(01:08:14):
boil it up, maybe do alittle shooting with it. Sure, but
do you or any of your listenershave any earthly idea of what where there
might be air gunner type stores inthe Houston area. Oh boy, you
know, my gut tells me thatthe only place you could still buy air
(01:08:35):
guns would be like maybe Academy, the the real gun stores, the Carter's
Country, the American Shooting Center,Shooters Corner, they don't carry them,
and so you're you're gonna have togo to some place that sells a lot
of different things, and that's gonnabe something they also carry. I know
(01:08:58):
Academy does carry a pretty good lineof air guns, but they're not gonna
be the top end air guns, and that's gonna be the difference. I
don't think, unless you're worried aboutcompetitive shooting, I don't think you have
to really look too far to findAMMO for any air gun. It's out
there. That's easy enough to findthe pellets. But yeah, I would
(01:09:20):
when you go to clean that thing, clean it as though it is a
real firearm and break it down asfar as you can and just get all
the gunk out of it, becauseotherwise you're just cheating yourself and the gun.
But man, yeah, I justdon't know of anybody who carries the
high end ones. You can findthem all online. I know you've already
(01:09:41):
done your research there, so rightyou can. You can go spend a
thousand dollars on an air rifle that'lltake out a white tailed deer. But
you don't have to. You know, you're just gonna use it for cleanking.
One thousand dollars on an air rifle. That's a low budget right there.
Well that's a good point, yeah, for the fancy ones on.
But I was a member out aby your Rifles yew years ago they had
(01:10:08):
an air gunner group. Oh wow, okay, that head matches out there
monthly. But I'm long since outof shooting out there. I bet they
haul as you well know. Yeah, I bet they're still there. Oh
yeah, they're still out there. No contact. Maybe somebody's listening to your
(01:10:28):
show this morning that might be ableto tell. Well, And you know
what what you need to do isstart your own group. Get online,
and that's what the internet's for.Go to Facebook or someplace like that and
say, look, I want tostart an air gun group, and I'm
in this part of town. Who'sin Yeah? Sure, all right,
I think got your best. Appreciateyou all right man, Yeah, thanks
tub see buddy, you have agreat day. YouTube audios. All right,
(01:10:50):
let me I'm gonna I'm gonna cheat. I'm gonna cheat. I'm gonna
catch Keith before we go to thebreak. That'll clean the board for now.
Keith, what's up, buddy?Hey, how are you doing?
This is my first time to callin and emailed you for many years.
Good, yeah, okay, yeah, this is yeah. I was gonna
tell you I did the two thingsthat happened this week. That the first
(01:11:11):
one, I've done this walk forabout twenty five years. It's about a
three mile walk up and I sawa bobcast. It was just it was
very incredible to see this thing anduh it was probably about four feet long.
Really just a beautiful They looked atme right in the eyes and kind
of darted off back into the creek. Sure. And then then yesterday I
(01:11:31):
was walking. I don't have acell phone. I came in and it
was really feeling funny, and Ifelt so funny that I decided I would
I needed to go to a neighborbecause I don't have a cell phone.
I ended I ended up, Iknock on the door and knocked harder.
Nobody answered. The next thing Iknew, I woke up. I was
staring and I was on this porch, just had collapsed and I just woke
(01:11:57):
up. Man. So then Iwent across the street knocked on the door
and they answered, and I hadclasped again. I was down on their
porch and they got me up andhad the MS come over. But it
turned out all it was very simple. It was a just heat exhaustion.
But I had all these weird feelingsthat were going on that made me think
(01:12:18):
that I was this was it lightheaded? Yeah, you get light headed,
you get disoriented, you can't reallydo anything that feels normal. And
like you said, the next thing, you know, you wake up and
somebody's looking over you. At leastyou wake up, Keith. You know,
yeah, that's kind of you know. I don't know how old a
(01:12:39):
man you are. But I wentout and I went out and hit balls
the other day, and for thefirst time, I thought, boys,
sure is hot out here. Andusually I've been able to get through it.
But what I'm what I'm doing,I've made a very concerted effort to
drink a whole lot more water. You got to stay hydrated. To get
a little bit of electrolytes in youand just stay ahead of it. You
(01:13:01):
can't let yourself get to that pointbecause I got a hunch that dehydration may
play may have played a role inyour collapse as well. I think that's
probably the case and what everybody's theirminds. But I've been doing the same
thing I've done for twenty five years. But I guess my age is caught
up with you. Yeah, Iwas gonna say, twenty five years ago
when we were different, Keith,I promise you they were way different.
(01:13:26):
Man. It was enough to getme to call you in just to say
hi. Anyway. Well, andit's I'm glad you did because it's a
it's a good reminder to people too. My son had an incident a while
back that it's scared the heck outof my wife and me. We take
him to his pediatricians. Pediatrician says, go to a cardiologist and make sure.
(01:13:46):
And we went to a pediatric cardiologistwho said, his heart's fine,
top to bottom, he's fine. His heart's fine. The reason what happened
to him happened. And she said, I've already seen six kids today who
have the same thing. They getdehydrated and if they get up to you
know, when you get up toofast, you kind of feel a little
bit dizzy. Oh yeah, well, yes, part of that is dehydration
(01:14:12):
and not enough electrolytes. And shejust told him that you got to start
drinking more water. You got todrink some at least one Powerade or gatorade
a day to keep all that stuffup. And and when you get up,
don't get up too fast. Now, the heat plays. That exacerbates
everything, and that's why you gotto be super careful with that. But
yeah, just pump the water toyourself, man, just pump it in.
(01:14:34):
Yeah, well that's what I Yeah, I don't want to give up
my walk. I started thinking, well, now, don't give up the
walk. Just get better at takingcare of yourself. That's right, all
right, don't be a stranger calledback sometime. Okay, That Bobcat was
cool though, that you know, you know, and that's why you keep
walking. If you don't walk, you're not going to see the Bobcat.
(01:14:57):
You can watch them on that geoand how fun is that? How warring
is that? Man? Go outand see a real Bobcat? All right,
thank you? Mean all, I'vegot to take this break here now,
I'm way late, and that's goingto shorten that next segment. Carter's
Country open today. It is MegaRange Day. Actually, there's a lot
(01:15:17):
of pistol manufacturers up there at thattrush Week store on the north side.
This is an opportunity for you andanybody else who wants to do it.
Go up there and shoot those gunsfor free. Find one you like,
walk in the shore, buy youone, come back out there and shoot
your own gun. There are severalthe pretty much the biggest handgun manufacturers are
(01:15:38):
out there and they've got their latestand greatest models for you to test fire
up there at the trashwik store.Carter's Country all the other Cartersting Tree stores
have good deals going on today. They always do. They always have the
online option. If you don't evenwant to leave home, you can the
way the internet is now, youcan go to that website Carterscountry dot com
(01:16:01):
and pretty much anything they have inthe store can be shipped right straight to
your door. Don't even have toget out of bed. You can just
grab your laptop, grab your pad, whatever it is, your phone,
make a place in order, andbefore long Hey, here's your stuff.
Carterscountry dot com, Guns Ammo andhunting stuff since the nineteen sixties. Kind
(01:16:24):
of like me, Carterscountry dot Com. This is Sports Talk seven ninety,
Breaking sports news on Facebook twenty fourto seven. We don't get that information
to them. This is the DougFight Show. All right, Welcome back,
Dog Fike Show on Sports Talk sevenninety. I've gotten myself so off
schedule, That's okay. What arethey gonna do? What are they gonna
(01:16:45):
do? Melvin? They're not gonnarun us off for are they? I
don't think so. Anyway. Allright, as promised early early, early
in the program, it is time, actually a couple of minutes beyond time
for me to be talking to thisman. Uh. We're gonna talk about
coastal fishing with somebody from the TexasPark and Walllaffe Department. And that's somebody
is Deputy Director of Coastal Fisheries,Dacas Geeseland. Welcome aboard Deaca's Good morning,
(01:17:08):
Doug. How are you, sir? I'm good man. I'm hoping
everything's going all right wherever you are. Some speckled trout here we are.
We finally got a little time underour belts with this new three trout limit,
which by the way, had peoplesaying some pretty mean things about you
guys. Is there a short answeras to why the Department settled where it
(01:17:29):
did on three in that new slot. Sure, you know, as we
doug as we as we continued andendure, you know, some of the
some of the challenges we face, not only with with mother Nature and freezes
and more angler pressure up and downthe coast. When we went out and
talked talked to our angling community allup and down the coast as part of
(01:17:50):
our public scoping process, we heardloud and clear that our anglers wanted,
you know, preferred a trophy troutopportunity over a harvest opportunity. And so
what we wanted to do is tryto build that opportunity up and down the
coast and to really build up arobust population that could endure some of these
(01:18:13):
episodic events like a freeze event intothe future. We know we're not going
to get around those. So themore you can build up that population,
the better you can endure and withstandsome of the resilience. Build in that
resilience within that trout population. Yeah, I think one of the biggest problems,
the biggest hurdles you guys face,is people who want it now.
(01:18:34):
I want my trout now. Idon't care what happens two years from now.
I don't care what happens five yearsfrom now. I want my trout
now. And not only do youhave to try to accommodate as best you
can that selfish attitude, but you'rejust like you said, you're planning for
five, six, ten years ahead, trying to see what we can build
(01:18:56):
and reinforce the population so it canwith stand something catastrophic like we've had that,
freezes, spills, anything like thatcan really and we've already seen it
in eighty three and eighty nine, how devastating freeze can be on a specil
trout population. That's why a bunchof guys went tarping fishing, because they
couldn't make a living trout fishing anymore. I tip my cap to you,
(01:19:19):
guys, I really do. I'vefished long enough to see trout limits whittled
down I don't know how many times, and I've never really had a problem
with that. Things change, speakingof, just talk about the population and
the changes in the numbers of fishermenout there and how much they impact that
population. Sure, No, allexcellent points, Doug. And you know,
(01:19:42):
as we continue to build this population, it's not gonna it's not gonna
happen overnight. I'd ask for alittle bit of grace and patience as we
expect to see some increases in numbers, you know, not only in numbers,
but also in quality fish and thenext three to three to say five
years. But really we are we'reseeing you know, more and more people
visit our coast. We're incredibly blessedhere in Texas with a beautiful coastline,
(01:20:08):
Lots of undeveloped areas still down inthe you know, the lower Lagoon of
Mandre, some sparks in the partsin the middle coast, and we want
folks to get out on the waterand enjoy and take advantage of the bountiful
resources we have. But with that, with that, there's a trade off,
and that's you know that that dutyis to all of us, but
especially to us, you know, managing our natural resources is to look to
(01:20:30):
that long term sustainability and being toprovide you know, a quality outdoor experience
for those that are just getting intothe fishery and old salts like you know,
like you that have been fishing upand down the coast for years.
So that's our job, you know, is to try to manage and balance
for all of our anglers and perspectivefuture anglers into the future. Yeah,
(01:20:54):
the the old salts, I thinkthe guys such as myself. I don't
know how old a fellow you are, but the guys in my age group,
we've I've caught enough fish. Idon't have to keep a bunch of
fish to it, and I don'thave to take pictures of them and show
them to everybody I know to provethat I've caught a fish or two in
my life. And so I'm I'mnot worried about it. Where where is
(01:21:15):
the most pushback coming from? Whatage group do you hear from most often?
Who doesn't like it when you takesomething away from them? Well,
you know, change, and youmentioned it. Change is tough. Change
is tough, and especially when youcompare you know, some of the management
strategies and the regulations to our neighboringstate to the to the east are our
(01:21:39):
Cajun brothers and sisters over and losingin That's a totally different level though,
I know, I wish everybody understoodit better go ahead. Yeah. No,
So we see some of the youknow, when you got and they
just made a regulation change and droppedtheir bag limit to fifteen trout. So
we see some you know, somegeographic what I'll say, some of the
(01:21:59):
upper coat pushback just because they're lookingacross Sabean Lake and over into over into
Louisiana and seeing these higher limits. But you know, again, our goal,
our goal is really to provide aquality fishing opportunity. And I would
say, you know, it's beensomewhat surprising that the angling mentality just when
the last five to ten years, the preferential you know, sentiment from our
(01:22:25):
anglers has has really shifted. Andit's more it's been more of a shift
from a harvest opportunity to a qualityfishing opportunity. And folks really wanted that
opportunity to catch a trophy trout. And when I say trophy, that's in
the eye of the beholder. Thatcould be a twenty five inch trout,
or that could be you know, the the Grand champion thirty inch and above
(01:22:48):
trout. It's a big old gatorgator trout. It's a half inch longer
than the biggest one you had yesterday. That's what a trophy trout is.
That is right, And whatever youcall yesterday, next one's a half inch
longer. Look at here, Lookwhat I got. And what I like
is is that the record book staysopen. That's one of my pet peeves
(01:23:08):
is anytime a record book gets closedby regulation. I don't like that because
if I go out and I catcha forty inch trout and the and the
rules say I can't keep one overthirty period, then that's a problem.
But you guys worked around that withthis tag system and all, and so
there I guarant if nothing goes wrong, knock on wood, okay, But
(01:23:30):
if nothing goes wrong in the nextthree or four years, baff and Bay
is gonna blow up and be likeit was in the late nineties, and
there's gonna be a bunch of bigfish, I think up and down the
coast. I really do. Yeah, Doug, I you and me,
both my friend and I hope thatopportunity. I hope we're able to,
you know, develop that opportunity inother base systems as well, that you're
(01:23:51):
able to do that in mat atGorda San Antonio Bay, moving up into
Galveston and Sabine Lake. I'd reallyif we can look back five to ten
years from now and see some ofthose trophy trout coming out of those different
based systems that they normally or traditionallyhaven't haven't come from, I would consider
that a you know, a resoundingsuccess. And you know that's not That's
(01:24:15):
one aspect of what we're trying todo there is, you know, provide
that opportunity. You know, it'sit's so cliche, but a twenty seven
inch trout can't find its way totwenty eight inches out of a frying pan.
You know, it's just it's notgonna work. So allowing allowing the
twenty five, twenty six, twentyseven to twenty eight whatever, throw that
(01:24:35):
fish back like I and most ofmy buddies do. Anyway, I've thrown
back. The biggest trout I everlet go was thirty two and a quarter
and it didn't buy. It didn'tphase me at all. We had a
picture, we had everything we neededand I'd let it go and I was
happy to do that. And whatI'm hoping is that by everybody I'm I'm
(01:24:57):
really encouraged by what you're saying aboutthis emphasis on the trophy opportunity versus the
harvest opportunity that bodes really well forthe future, doesn't it. I believe
so. I believe it does. And you know, trying to balance that
opportunity with folks as you suggest,Doug. I mean, you know,
if some if someone catches one ofthose larger trout, they do have that
opportunity and they make that decision toharvest that trout, and we feel that
(01:25:21):
that is also that is also sustainable. Uh, there's there's so few of
those trout that get out up tothose size classes and there's so few of
those fish being harvested at right now. Yeah, that's it. You know,
that's that's right. And you know, this is what we tried to
do is mirror what we're doing withred fish and provide that that opportunity one
(01:25:45):
fish over twenty eight inches and youtag it just like you would a redfish.
The parallels are there, and theconsistency is there with the practices that
have already been implemented with our redfish. Deputy Director of Coastal Fisheries Dacas
Geesling with me on board here theDoug Pike Show. So are you still
hearing from people who are telling youthat all these red fish are going to
(01:26:09):
destroy our blue crabs and shrimp? You know, blue crabs face a lot
of challenges, they really do.But yeah them that that's that's not the
predation by redfish is you know, that's not the driving factor. There's a
lot of other environmental variables, youknow facing our blue crab population. Uh,
(01:26:31):
you know, redfish. Sure theylove eating blue crab, but they
also love eating shrimp and other fish. And you know, so it's that's
a that's a food web, youknow, a food web balancing acting and
of itself. And you know,I'm sure I'm sure proud of our red
fish fishery album, yeah man,and what we've what we've able to accomplish
(01:26:55):
together with our anglers and conservation groups, you know, since the net bands
the red fish Wars, I meanwe are, We're very incredibly proud of
our red fish fishery, I hope. So when if if somebody were to
call you today and ask you whatyou're going to do about red fish eating
up all our little speckled trout, would you just laugh? Because it wouldn't
(01:27:17):
be the first time, would itwell, or you want to just say
that, you know, alligator, alligator guar eat all the fish too.
Yeah, that's true. Yeah. The the fact is fish eat fish,
Yeah, to the point that they'redecimating one critter or another. I just
(01:27:40):
in my professional and I don't seeus being out of balance to that extent.
Yeah, I would. I haveto agree, I would have to.
I think having a lot of redfish, having even what a lot of
people would call too many red fish, is a good problem. I agree.
I agree we have not exceeded ourcarrying capacity in redfish. I am
gonna have to get you back onsometime. I gotta take this break right
(01:28:02):
now, but I'm gonna get youback on at some point. I really
enjoy talking to you, and Ithink maybe in a short time we'll be
able to talk about an improved bigtrout fishery in this state. And I'm
going to have you back on todo that pretty soon. Thank you.
I appreciate it. Decis, Thankyou, Doug, sir. Have a
good weekend, and please remember it'sMemory of Day weekend. Everybody be safe

man. I appreciate that. Howare you doing that. I'm good.
We got a couple of minutes foryou. What's up? The Astros won?
(01:29:12):
They did, indeed, Thank goodness. I had to go to bed
before the end of the game, but I did get tucked in with them
up six to one. So andI heard as they finished up sixty three.
I can take that. Yeah,Yeah, we're playing that for you
today at three. Okay, good, I don't have to stay up late,
I can. I can get alittle sleep tonight. That'd be fantastic,
(01:29:34):
Mike. I did last night.Yeah, yeah, yeah. Those
West Coast games are tough on meon Friday and Saturday nights. They started
yesterday a little bit earlier though.Yep. Hey, it looks like it's
gonna okay, good, go ahead, Brandon. I'm gonna talk about golf
(01:30:09):
before all right, real quick, because I'm almost out of time. I
like golf. I watched a golfchannel a couple of times during the weekend.
Maybe you should take up golf. It's a great sport. Yeah,
(01:30:30):
as long as you don't get frustratedtoo easily, because if frustration is part
of you, golf can be very, very tough. Yeah. I'm gonna
wait till fishing water. Okay, that's fine. Hey, there's no rush.
You know, you've got every everyday for the rest of your life,
(01:30:55):
a long life ahead of you tostart fishing. So don't push yourself
to do it. Just when you'reready, when you're ready, set it
up and go man. Okay,Hey, did your son play baseball?
He is playing. He's on ateam now that started practicing. He played
for his school during the school season, and then he's playing now for another
team where He gets a lot ofwork on this team. He plays first
(01:31:18):
base, he played a little outfield, he pitches a lot, so he's
gonna be busy all summer. Andthank goodness, he's got a car so
I don't have to drive him allover town and back. Ye. Hey,
good for him, Yeah, verygood for him. Good for me
to believe me. What's that?Oh, he hadn't had a game yet
(01:31:40):
on this team, there's just stillthey're starting, they're getting started. It's
kind of like spring training for themright now. He is like pretty much
only not getting paid like a boy. I wish he was getting paid like
an astro. That'd be pretty good. I could take a day off now
and then, Oh, tell mequick, what's you know? Yeah,
(01:32:02):
yeah, he he got He answeredagain. No, no, yeah,
I hadn't heard that yet. That'sterrible. We could use him, dog
gone it so close and yet sofar away. Huh nope, all right,
Pardner back, all right, Well, I gotta get to this break
(01:32:25):
at the top of the hour.Brandon. It's great to hear from you,
though, Bud. All right, yes, sir, bye bye and
your morning and go Astros appreciated.Think about Memorial Day too, Like I
was talking about early. Okay, all these guys who who sacrificed themselves for
us so we could talk about baseballand fishing. All right, Bud,
(01:32:47):
all right, I'll talk to youagain tomorrow. Bye bye. All right,
we gotta take his break. Onthe way out, I will tell
you about Timber Creek Golf Club.I'll do that. Timber Creek is Man,
it's down on the south side townFM twenty three fifty one. I'm
gonna guess about three miles. I'mgonna I'm not really sure. It's between
three and four miles. I wouldsay west of the golf freeway. Very
(01:33:10):
easy to find. Twenty seven holestoo, so they've got two sets of
foursomes or whatever going out all morninglong. So everybody who wants to get
down there and play golf can dothat now today probably pretty busy. You
might want to call first before yougo down there without a tea time.
If you can make one, getdown there, hit a few balls.
(01:33:30):
If you're having trouble with the swing, maybe go over to the JJ Woods
Golf Performance Center there at Timber Creekand get a little instruction. Great teaching
staff. JJ Woods has put ina state of the art facility down there.
I need to get him back onthe phone. He's surely he's got
all the boxes unpacked by now.Twenty seven holes, great food, great
(01:33:50):
people, a great teaching staff withJJ Woods now and all you have to
do is show up. Creek GolfClub dot com is a website, Timbercreekgolf
Club dot com. This is theDoug Pike Show, brought to you by
American Shooting Centers, Guns, Shootingand Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now
(01:34:15):
here's Doug Pike. Third hour ofthe program starts right now. Thanks for
listening. Been great. Dakus Geesemanfrom the Parks and Widlife Department. I
had Norm Wade from the Texas chapterof the National Wild Turkey Federation. This
one might not be a bad one. Just saying Melvin to hang on to
(01:34:38):
for a best of at some pointif I ever take a day off,
because there's some good information in bothof those interviews, and neither one of
them is particularly timestamped except for theTurkey Federation one. Certainly Dacas's interview would
would play again. I might getto that at some point seven one three
two, one two five seven ninetyemail me Dougpike at iHeartMedia Dot. Let's
(01:35:00):
go if I could grab the rightmouse and get over here, let's go
to stand by the Charles Schwab Challengeongoing now up in Fort Worth at Colonial.
Let me take a look at this, leader boy, I gotta pull
this thing in a little closer tome so I can read it. I'm
gonna have to get new readers forthis, for this studio in here,
(01:35:21):
something with one more element or onemore increment of power, because it's just
flat not working anymore. Davis Rileyshoots He's ten under through two rents sixty
six sixty four for the two daysthey played so far. He leads by
a pair over Hayden Buckley. PearsonCoody pierces that somebody's misspelled his first name.
(01:35:48):
There's no way that's how he spellshis first name. I got a
hunch you. I'm just gonna callhim Pierson Cooty until somebody tells me different.
Those who are two shots off thelead Sonya at six under par along
with Keegan Bradley and Septstraca. Theyfind themselves four shots out with thirty six
(01:36:09):
to play, which is still nota terribly big hill to climb, and
then the fives I think are allstill in it, certainly Ryan Fox,
Robbie Shelton, Brian Harmon and TonyFee Now and we'll throw in the four
since there's thirty six holes. That'sGary Woodland, Web Simpson, Denny McCarthy,
all of those guys, and awhole lot more. Scotty Scheffler dog
(01:36:31):
gone. He walked out Thursday andshot seventy two, but righted the ship
yesterday and shot a five under sixtyfive to put himself at three under par.
So hard to count out the world'snumber one, even though he's seven
shots off of the lead. Butas I talked about so many times,
(01:36:55):
when I'm looking at these leader boardson a Saturday morning, if there's somebody
out front who had a really greatround yesterday, the odds of repeating that
great round tend to go down, just as PGA Tour stats go, and
so he may come back to thefield a little bit today, or at
(01:37:15):
least we'll get passed, probably bya couple of people if tradition holds up,
And who knows, Scotty could goout there and catch fire and find
himself in a very good position.Scotty Cheffer were distracted, of course,
after the incident at the PGA thatput him in handcuffs literally and in big
(01:37:40):
trouble with the police there. Heis still facing charges at this point.
But the more we learn about howit happened, the more we learned about
the witnesses that are available to thedefense, the more we learn about everybody
who was in I can't help butthink that this is not going to not
(01:38:05):
going to end up being nearly thesignificant event as it appears to be now.
There are a lot of good reasons, good legal reasons. I think
that at least some of these chargeswill either be reduced or dropped. There
(01:38:28):
are just a lot of things wentwrong in that incident, and Scottie's story
is very different than that of thearresting officer, who, by the way,
I think, if I'm not mistaken, the procedures for that department are
that when they're doing what this officerwas doing, you should have had his
(01:38:50):
body camera on. He didn't,and that may come into play. There
is video, There are witnesses thatsay that Scotty may have been treated unfairly.
Now I have no idea what thedetails are around any of that.
But my own research tells me thatmy own research and my gut, just
(01:39:13):
based on what I've read so far, says that this is going to It's
not going to get swept under arug, not at all, not at
all. Anytime something like this happens. There are two sides to the story,
though, and I tend to sidewith Scotty's side, not because he's
the number one golfer in the world, but just based on the information that
(01:39:35):
I've heard about the circumstances and theinstructions he was given, how he reacted
to him, and whether or notthere was a whole lot of miscommunication between
those two, between the arresting officerand Scotti Scheffler. So hopefully, hopefully
that will go away and it'll getbehind us at some point. And I
(01:39:59):
think the sooner the for Scottie Scheffler, I don't foresee him. I don't
foreseeing him serving any time for this. I just I can't imagine that that
would happen. Seven one three twoone two five seven ninety Email me Doug
Pike at iHeartMedia dot com. Speakingof golf, we have live goolf coming
here and just a couple of weekends, not this coming weekend, but the
(01:40:24):
one after. On the I thinkit's seven eight and nine, Yeah,
I know, it's seven eight andnine of June up there at Golf Club
of Houston, former home to PGATour stop for many many years on PGA
Tour played on both courses at GolfClub of Houston. The Live goolf folks
are going to be on the tournamentcourse, I believe exclusively, not like
(01:40:45):
you can make a tea time onthe on the member course though. I'm
going to be up there as muchas I can. Really. The more
the more that I hear about thisthat, including the interview I had with
one of the men who who ispart of Live Golf, I can't remember
his specific title, but it hasto do with with hospitality and and just
event hype, if you will, came on a couple of weeks ago and
(01:41:12):
explained very in very simple to understandterms, how the team structure works,
how the the the gosh, I'vejust lost it. Shotgun start. I
didn't imagine me, a fourteen yearold waterfowl guy trying to find the word
shotgun in my memory. Banks shotgunstart. Actually, I kind of like
(01:41:36):
because at traditional PGA Tour events, you if you've got you got to watch
somebody that goes off at seven pointthirty, and then the other person you
want to watch doesn't go out untiltwo thirty. It's gonna be a long
day on the golf course. Theshotgun start actually gives you a chance to
walk around a little bit and seeeverybody within four hours, because after about
(01:41:57):
four and a half hours, they'reall going to be off the golf course.
There's a little partying, well,a lot of partying goes on before,
during, and after a lot ofmusic around the golf course. Very
different. I think I may runup there actually, either this weekend or
maybe Tuesday, just to see what'sgoing on, see how it's being built
out as compared to other events i'vebeen to up there, and I know
(01:42:18):
for sure there's gonna be a wholelot more speakers on the course because I
was involved in a press conference,a little telephone press conference with Patrick Reid
a few days ago. I gotto listen to him and ask him a
few questions, and it really doessound like a better, a little looser
(01:42:43):
structured event than a PGA Tour event. And nothing wrong. I love the
PGA Tour. I love all theguys who play it. I have gotten
to know a few of them overthe years. Not well. I mean
we don't hang out on holidays oranything, but I've gotten at least to
be around them and feel some oftheir vibe. And I like the way
that tour is still structured and itwill go on. But I think live
(01:43:06):
golf has a place, and thensome of the other golf opportunities that are
coming around will have their place andturn as well. And it's just different
and difference and change tend to bringaround improvement. That's the guys on the
PGA Tour. When live golf reallystarted to gain traction, suddenly the PGA
(01:43:29):
Tour had bigger purses to offer andto kind of hold on to some of
their guys. And I don't blamethem. That was long coming for the
PGA Tour. I hope some ofit trickles down to the LBGA Tour.
And one of the things I'm gonnaask the next time I have a chance
with some of the Live goolf peopleis when, if at all, they
(01:43:49):
anticipate adding women to the teams.I would like to see that. I
would like to see that. I'dbring them all on. The best men
and the best women from the worldof golf all playing on the same course
on the same three days. Thatwould be kind of fun. Seven three
(01:44:10):
two one two five seven nine emailand Medugpike at iHeartMedia dot com. Time
to take a little break here, that's what we're gonna do. And I'm
gonna remind you that the Star TournamentCCA Star Tournament started today. If you
are registered, you've got to beregistered to win any of the prizes.
You have to be a part ofthe tournament before you can be eligible to
(01:44:34):
win anything. So don't play around. Okay, go get yourself signed up
if you haven't already, and thentake advantage of the opportunity to be fishing
all summer long, all summer long, for scholarships for the kids, for
(01:44:55):
fantastic prizes for the rest of usup to and including a package that includes
a forur and f one point fiftytruck, a boat, a motor and
a trailer to pull them on.All of those things available to people who
are entered when they catch that speciallytagged fish. And boy, those tech
(01:45:18):
fish are out there and they arereleased typically in places that a lot of
people fish one point nine million dollarsin prizes, including all those scholarships,
including all the awesome prizes, boatsand trucks and giant gift cards. Sponsors,
the big sponsors Texas Ford Dealers,Academy Sports and Outdoors, Progressive Insurance,
(01:45:43):
Half Power, Polaris, and whata Burger? Who else in Texas?
Really, honestly what a Burger? As Long said, I don't know
if Whataburger has been around longer thanCCA, or CCA has been around longer
than Whataburger, I'd be kind ofcurious. I'm not sure. I bet
they're both around the age. MaybeI think Whataburger might be a little bit
earlier. Flashing back to some ofthe old Whataburger signs and stuff I've seen,
(01:46:05):
and how much Hamburger costs back then, CCA Star Tournament, Star Tournament
dot org. That's where you cansign up, be a winner. Good.
There's nothing else. You just getto go fishing. Every time you
want to say, oh, it'sfor the kids, it's yeah, we're
gonna win a scholarship, it's forI'm gonna try to win a boat,
(01:46:26):
and you're doing something good for theconservation of our Coastal Resources. It's a
win win, win win win situation. Sign up now at Star tournament dot
org. That's star tournament dot org. We are Sports Talk seven ninety.
Are you ready? Listen online atsports seven ninety dot com. Now more
(01:46:46):
Doug Fike Doug Pike Show on SportsTalk seven ninety. It's Memorial Day weekend.
I mentioned early in the program, and I'm gonna do it again.
A reminder first of all, thatthe reason we are able to enjoy our
Memorial Day as we see fit,do whatever we want to do, basically,
(01:47:06):
as long as it's lawful and youcan afford it. I guess that
rules out having a big old cookout. I saw a story yesterday about cookouts
and how the average cost of aMemorial Day weekend cookout was like thirty bucks.
And then I read a little fartherand it said that's for eight hot
(01:47:29):
dogs, eight hamburgers and buns andketchup and mustard and relish and mayonnaise or
something thirty bucks for that. Whatabout I asked yesterday on fifty plus,
what about potato salad? What aboutcoleslaw? What about beer? What about
sweet tea? What about wine ina box you gotta have a couple of
boxes of wine, of course,But I digress. So the bottom line
(01:47:56):
is the reason we are able todo all this and have our fun on
a day off from work. Actuallyit started yesterday around here, basically two
days off of work, the Fridayand the Monday, is because a whole
lot of people who came before uswere willing to fight for our country and
gave their lives for our country andfor the lifestyle that we enjoy. And
(01:48:23):
this is an opportunity to recognize themand to however you want to do it,
to thank them. If you've gota big old backyard party going on
today at some point in that backyardparty, or if you're invited to one
and nobody else is doing it,tap a screw driver on a beer can
or something, whatever you have todo to get everybody's attention, and just
(01:48:46):
ask them to give you what Iasked for earlier this morning, just five
seconds, five seconds. Give upfive seconds of your day today or tomorrow
or Monday, and acknowledge with justsilent reflection, the sacrifice that those people
made. Arlington Cemetery is full ofpeople who gave their lives so that we
(01:49:12):
can do whatever we're going to dothis weekend, and I don't want anybody
to forget that. Let's take anotherfive seconds, Melbourne. What do you
think? Man? You in?I'm in. Let's go right now.
Thank you? All right, let'sget back to where we were. I
(01:49:34):
got a couple of catching up.Thank dub. If you're still listening about
those air guns, ah Man,I didn't write down who sent it to
me. I'll find out. Igot an email, go to pyramidair dot
com. I had not heard ofthat website, but I have now pyramidair
dot com the email. Let mebring that up real quick and I can
(01:49:55):
give credit where it's due. Whereto go? Where to go? Where
was it? Mark? Home?Wasn't Mark? Dad? Gummt Oh it
goes down so far? Oh?Here it is right here. Billy sent
me that. Thank you, Billy. I appreciate that. Pyramid Air all
one word. I guess that's howit has to be. Dot Com said,
if they don't have whatever, it'sprobably not made anymore. They sell
(01:50:17):
gun parts and M and so andso for all the pneumatic guns. Pneumatic
guns, by the way, Uh, not cheap anymore, Not cheap at
all anymore. Seven one three twoone two five seven ninety email on me,
Doug Pikey diehard. Oh man,Rudy, I know I feel your
pain, buddy. We hadn't seenhim in a long time. But there
(01:50:41):
is a in addition to I thinkit's over on the East coast. It's
worse than here. This this megahatch of cicadas, the double dip population
of cicadas that only come up aboutevery fourteen or seventeen years, and this
particular year has been one of theones where they all hatch same time.
(01:51:01):
This appears at least an hour regionto be the year of the gnat,
and Rudy, I can feel yourpain already, is asking is there a
commercial gnat repellent. I've never seenthem this bad. Oh, yes they
are out there. Yes they willcover you up. They used to try
(01:51:21):
to eat me and carry me offwhen I was coaching baseball with little kids
over it at first Colony little league. They eat me up on the golf
course on the driving range. Andwhen I get bit by one of those
beasts and they are they, Iswell up like a toad frog. I'm
(01:51:41):
somehow at least minimally allergic to whateverit is is on their teeth when they
bite me. First of all,it just hurts a little bit. And
then if they get a good biteon me before I can swat them away,
I puff up in a space aboutthe eyes at least of a nickel,
and sometimes of a quarter that's raiseda good quarter inch. It swells
(01:52:09):
up that much at the bite site. And I was laughing the other day.
I remember recalling this year already.I've come home at one point with
three bites on my neck, andmy wife looked at me. I didn't
even know they were there. Ijust I guess I went numb to them
all biting me that day. Butthese three got me on the neck really
(01:52:30):
good. And when I walked in, my mouth or my wife's mouth just
dropped open, like, oh mygod, what happened to you? So
I don't know. I was justplaying golf. What's up? Go look
at your neck? And we gota big mirror in the den on one
wall, and I went and Iturned my head a little bit and I
looked, and it just h itwas kind of grotesque looking. I would
(01:52:53):
not have wanted to go out inpublic looking like that. And then there
was another time this past year. That one, I was on the driving
range again. I don't know whythere's so many of them over there.
There's got to be something. ButI was on the driving range, mind
of my own business, and oneof them kind of flew into my mouth
and oh gosh, what's going onhere? And on its way out it
(01:53:16):
bit me on just the inside ofmy lip and that swoll up and looked
like I've been punched in the face. Let me go talk to Rick.
Oh, by the way, Rudy, fifty to fifty mix vanilla extract water.
Get yourself a little spray bottle fromthe dollar store. Fifty percent water,
fifty percent vanilla extract. You'll smellbetter and you then nat's'll leave you
(01:53:41):
alone, I promise. What's upRick? Morning, man, I'm glad
we finally got to you. I'msorry about that. It's been kind of
busy around here. Well I'm inthat so I'm having dropped myself. Okay,
you're kind of coming in now, now, what's up? Yeah?
Goodneck turkeys career. I kind oflook at this way. I'm might just
(01:54:11):
spend some time talking. Hey Rick, I hate to break it, Hey,
Rick, I hate to break itto you. Man, but you
are breaking up really bad. I'mgonna have to drop it. Let's try
and call again because I can't getyou at all. All right, I'll
let that one go for a minute. Hopefully he'll call back. I know
he got the radio still work,so he knows I'm looking for him,
and we'll get him back on here. We will get him back on.
(01:54:32):
Dan just sent me. I betit's a picture. Yeah, sure enough.
This is was my uncle David.I was four years old when he
died in Vietnam. Oh man,I'm so sorry. I am so sorry
about that. I had a cousinwho did a hitch I guess is as
they called it in Vietnam, asgreen beret, and he told some pretty
(01:54:58):
good stories. But he also itwas back when I was a whole lot
younger. There was a lot ofstuff that he just didn't want to talk
about. And I can't blame him. I can't blame him. That had
to have been just horrific, justhorrific. Uh. Brian Wade in Hi,
Doug, just wanted to suggestion foryour audience. There's a movie starring
(01:55:18):
Kevin Bacon called Taking Chance should berequired viewing this weekend by every American.
Uh, I'm gonna look that up. I'm gonna check it out, Steve,
Thank you Steve for that email. And yes, Captain Scott and all,
(01:55:39):
I will call Dak back and tellhim you said hello. I can
certainly do that. Yeah, boy, I've got got all kinds of stuff
going on. Oh, Mark overin Georgia, former Houstonian now living in
Georgia. He'll be back, youknow he will. Our family meets him
Fall Creek Falls State Park. Forthe last thirty five years Moral day enjoy
(01:56:02):
fishing at golf and now the parkis part of their new state park golf
circuit. I like that idea.I like that idea. There's a lot
of state parks in this state ofours that have a few one hundred extra
acres they could turn into golf courses. Wow, his dad's out there at
ninety seven. Oh my gosh,Mark's the youngest at sixty three. That's
(01:56:27):
awesome. That is absolutely awesome.Congratulations on getting everybody out. That lake
looks pretty dog gone. Nice too. I got a hunch that's got bass
and trout in it over in Georgia. I'm not sure. My cousins lived
in outside Atlanta. I can't rememberthe name of the little town they were
in for the longest time when theywere kids, anyway, and we visited
(01:56:50):
them once as a family. Therewere four boys in their family, my
sister and I in ours as thekids, and there were the the moms
all my mother's my mom and hersister or who I'm taught the families who
were talking about and when I wasover there, as much as I liked
to fish, so did those boys. And they had a little creek down
(01:57:14):
down not far well walking distance fromthe house, and we would go down
there and catch little, very littlerainbow trout, but nonetheless they were trout,
and it was kind of cool. There was some other fish we were
catching in there too. It wasn'tanything that I recognized from over here.
I don't know what it could havebeen, but whatever it was, it
was something they caught in their littlecreek down by the railroad tracks, and
it was pretty fun. As Iwas probably nine years old, maybe eight
(01:57:41):
or nine years old when we madethat trip. I remember, I remember
the trestle and I remember the creekbetter than I remember the layout of my
aunt and uncle's house. That's kindof where my head was back in those
days, house was just where youslept. The fun stuff started outside some
(01:58:01):
one three, two, one,two five seven ninety damn waded in.
My wife used to work at theMcDonald's on Main Street in Parland, and
there was a bobcat that lived inthe little patch of woods right behind the
store. She'd see it three orfour times a week. That's kind of
cool. I like that as well. Got that taken care of, Got
(01:58:24):
that taken care of that? Okay? Yeah? And Colt, Colt,
bless his heart, man. Ihaven't gotten back to him yet. I
hope what I'll do. I thinkhe's looking for someplace to take a kid
fishing up around Cyprus or maybe Hockleysomewhere up there. I've passed going to
golf tournament or baseball tournaments up thatway out to ninety I have passed some
(01:58:48):
just retention ponds on the side ofthe road, and you would be surprised
at how many perch and catfish windup in those little retention ponds, getting
swept in there by the ditches andcreeks and what not that feed them.
There are fishing those things, nota lot. You're not going to go
(01:59:09):
in there and catch fifteen pound bass, but you're probably going to be able
to catch sunfish. You're probably goingto be able to catch catfish. And
the only way to find out isif you actually go fish them. Go
to the sporting goods stores out thereand ask somebody who works in the fishing
department. If you can find anactual fishing department person, ask them where
(01:59:30):
the little kids around there go fish. They probably will know if in your
neighborhood you can find little kids totalk to, not toddlers, we're talking
about kids who are old enough tobe riding bikes on their own, they'll
know where you can go fish, absolutely they will. Boy, ask my
son about anywhere around sugar Now thathe's got his own car, he and
(01:59:55):
his buddies are fishing all over Sugarlandand doing relatively well, I might say,
is bass fishermen and catfish and actuallysome fresh water drum and even croppye
on crank baits. Lately, that'sbeen kind of the fun stuff. Good
heavens, we're late for another break. I'm so sorry, so sorry,
(02:00:15):
Melbourne. Kind of Hey man,I'm doing my best in here, all
right. I get on a topicand I just yeah, you know,
what I do. You've been herelong enough to know that I don't make
many breaks on time. All Right, on the way out, I'll remind
you get about Carter's Country and thebig, big, big deal they've got
going on up at the North Sidestore on Treshwick tresh Wig. It is
(02:00:39):
Mega range day and there are severalhandgun manufacturers who have brought out guns that
you can go out there and tryfor yourself to see if one of their
guns is the one you want totake home, the one you want to
use for self defense, the oneyou want to use for hunting, the
one you want to use for targetshooting, whatever it is, competitive shooting.
(02:01:00):
There are guns out there that willget you into the competition, get
you into targets, hunting, whateveryou want to do. Self defense,
it's a big deal. Crime's notgetting any better, let's face it,
Okay, not right now. Maybesomeday, but not right now. And
it's a little uneasy sometimes to beout there. If you want to be
(02:01:23):
confident that you can take care ofyourself, consider carrying a gun. You
can do that in this state, and you can use it to protect yourself,
your family, your property, evenother people. If some nut shows
up and starts hurting people, Butyou do it the right way. Sign
up for one of their concealed carryclasses up there while you're up there at
Mega Range Day. These classes takeplace every other weekend a Saturday, then
(02:01:47):
two weeks later a Sunday, thentwo weeks later a Saturday. It kind
of goes like that. And ifyou sign up for one of those,
you'll get all the instruction you needin the classroom to be confident that you
understand the laws about winning where youcan and cannot draw in or fire your
weapon. And then you'll also getsome proficiency check to make sure that you
(02:02:09):
are capable, and if you're not, take some lessons. They have people
who can teach you. Carterscountry dotCom. That's the starting point, right
there, Carterscountry dot Com, yourrockets and astros live here. We are
Sports Talk seven ninety. The conversationcontinues this as the Doug Pike Show.
(02:02:29):
All right, welcome back. Justwrapping up an email to Rudy letting him
know that the Gnats indeed will shyaway from that vanilla extract. I had
to use it on the range yesterday. Na's we're just starting to get worse
and worse they found me, Andonce they find you, they sound a
little alarmed that you and I can'thear, and all their buddies come a
(02:02:50):
running. They know. I don'tknow what it is they like about me,
but they do, and I hatethem, and I'm man If I
could just wear a body suit thatwould keep them out, I would do
it this time of year. Idisliked them that much. Rick sent me
a picture of a road killed hogwith the subject line, yummy. I'm
(02:03:18):
not so sure I would agree withthat. Not so sure I would agree.
I saw somebody reference roadkill pictures likethat, and to use an alliteration,
and not to pick on the peopleI'm about to pick on, because
(02:03:39):
you can do it with any city, but the one I saw, I
think it said there was a pictureof roadkill and it said Pasadena pizza,
which is kind of bizarre. Whatare you laughing about, Melon, I
no, yeah, any Nashville pizza. I've seen it listed like that.
(02:03:59):
Just so just pick your town whateveryou want, you want. When somebody
comes across road killed driving along ifyou see something like that, hm ah.
What other cities in Texas? Paris? Yeah, a Paris pizza.
You could do that one too. We're he's gonna try my vanilla extract.
I'm telling you it works. Ihave. There are two little mesh bags,
(02:04:21):
one on either side. It's thatlittle humming noise I hear my headphones.
That's so weird. In any event, there are two little mesh pockets.
I guess you could put a waterbottle in them. Whatever one has,
and they're like holsters for this timeof year. One has mosquito repellent,
(02:04:44):
one has vanilla extract, and youcan use them in combination to thwart
the mosquitoes and the gnats. Ihave already learned that. Now it gets
kind of gooey and weird when youhave all these smells working together, but
the effect still is insect free.Golf or fishing or whatever you're doing.
(02:05:08):
It's the worst when you're trying tofish and nats or bothering you. You
can't can't pay attention to what you'redoing. Trust me on this routine.
Trust me on this. Anybody inthe audience who hates nats as much as
Rudy and I do, that willtake care of them. Seven one,
three two five seven ninety email onme, Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com.
(02:05:30):
Uh, Steve, let's see, yeah, thank you for that.
I already talked about that. We'rein good shape on emails. Thank goodness.
Let me go back to golf forjust a minute and back to this
live golf event that's coming up there. There is opportunity to see and again
it all at once. If ifyou get out there, let's say an
(02:05:53):
hour before they're gonna tee off,the practice facility is loaded because they are
all going at the same time. That means they all have to warm up
at the same time. Both endsof the range at Golf Club of Houston
will be full of the best, some of the best. The PGA Tour
(02:06:14):
certainly has its share of the bestplayers in the world as well, but
the live golf players pretty dog gonegood bunch. If you run down the
roster and they will all be outthere at one time. And I can
tell you from experience when I wasdoing live broadcast from out there with the
Shell Houston Open that along that tealine over there as they warm up,
(02:06:39):
you can learn an awful lot abouthow you might want to think about warming
up before your rounds of golf becausethey're very methodical, they're very patient.
They give themselves plenty of time, which a lot of us don't do.
I'm getting better about that, andI think it's only because I've gotten older
and it takes me a little bitlonger to stretch, it takes me a
(02:07:01):
little bit longer to be able tomake a full swing, but it's still
it's still as important. And theother thing that a lot of us kind
of neglect. On the way tothe first tea, you just totally bypass
the putting green because after all,you had to spend an extra five minutes
hitting more drivers because you're trying tobomb it and see how far you're gonna
(02:07:24):
be able to hit it. That'sjust it really spending time, spending more
time on your driver than on yourputter is counterproductive. Really, you're only
going to hit that in a goodround. You're only gonna hit driver maybe
fourteen times, and probably shouldn't hitit maybe more than about a dozen times,
(02:07:46):
because some of the four pars you'regonna face, you can position yourself
more strategically by hitting maybe a threewood or a three or four iron,
or a hybrid it or something. You don't have to hit it all the
way to the green. The notionof drivable par fours is fantastic, and
(02:08:07):
I love it, but I'm havingto weigh the potential benefits against a potential
disaster that can happen if you spina driver's sideways either direction and land it
off the planet somewhere. You've justtaken yourself out of the hole. Where
(02:08:28):
As on one, to say, three of the par fours at black Hawk,
for example, at least three ofthem, and there's a fourth one
I just came up with in myhead. Four of those holes I can
hit even three iron and maybe fouriron if I've got a little wind at
my back, and still leave nothingmore than maybe an eight or nine iron,
(02:08:52):
seven iron if I miss it bya couple of grooves. And why
on earth would I risk hitting adraw into a lake or into a bunker
when I can just lob one downthe middle and have a nice comfortable shot
back in. I played nine yesterday, actually played fifteen holes, but the
front nine I played better than Iplayed in quite a while, and it
(02:09:16):
was because I managed the golf course. I made sure that I managed the
golf course so that I could leavemyself a shot and I actually hope it
happens again soon. I actually endedup hitting six six greens. I may
have hit seven, I can't rememberexactly. I didn't want to get ahead
of myself toward the end of thatnine. Yeah, I don't remember missing
(02:09:39):
but one green actually, so yeah, I hit eight greens and that's hero
stuff for me. That's very uncommon. And I'm also I'm working on my
short game too, hopefully for somebetter. All right, good heavens,
you've been very patient, Melvin, and I'm running very late. Oh my
gosh. All right, we'll takethis last break of the pro man pro
(02:10:01):
and on the way out Primo doors. The date is set, the door
is going to be installed. Onceit is, I will be ringing the
bell and sounding the trumpets over that. And it's coming up pretty soon.
By the way. I'm thrilled. My wife is thrilled. We're gonna get
this knocked out and we're gonna havea brand new, beautiful solid wood front
(02:10:24):
door on our home. Can't wait. Honestly, we have gone through the
process. We have lived with theanticipation for long enough, and now we
have some timing issues that are uniqueto our family, and we've overcome them.
We've worked with the cruise over thatPrimo, and boy, here it
(02:10:46):
comes, and once it's in,I'm gonna start singing the praises of that
too. They are open today,by the way, the showroom on North
Post Oke. If ever you thought, okay, we're riding around out here
right now and we're pretty close, let's go there. Get in your phone,
get in your navigation system, typein Primo Doors, North Post Oak,
(02:11:09):
get the address, let the cartake you there and walk in.
They're open from ten to two. They're gonna open in twelve minutes. They'll
be there for four hours. Takea little time, go over there and
get an idea what a beautiful newfront door could do for your house.
If you're at home sitting around rightnow, get online look at the before
and after pictures at premodors dot com. That'll get you all excited. Then't
(02:11:33):
make that appointment. Get over thereand let the people at Primo Doors help
you find just the right wood, iron, or fiberglass door. From among
thousands of selections of doors and handlesets and stain colors, all of that
stuff. They can help you narrowit down to just a few choices.
(02:11:56):
Of those thousands, and then onceyou make that commitment, once you get
that door ordered, it'll be onyour house before you know it, and
you'll be you'll be standing proud everytime you look at the front of your
house, and everybody who comes toyour house will know a little bit more
about you and your family and howmuch pride you take in your home.
Primodors dot com is the website mentionedmy name when you make that purchase,
(02:12:22):
and you're gonna get a very nice, very happy surprise. Trust me on
that. Primodors dot Com are Sportstockseven ninety, Houston Sports where you go
with iHeartRadio now now get more Dougon Sports Talk seven ninety. Don't forget
this, don't forget why we're ableto do whatever we want to do today
(02:12:48):
and tomorrow and Monday. A lotof people, a lot of people gave
their lives for this country so thatwe could go out and play golf or
go fishing, or go shooting,or whatever you want to do today you
can go do. And it's notnot because of anything you or I did,
(02:13:11):
unless unless you were in the service, and if you were, thank
you very much for serving our country, and I'm glad you made it back
and I hope you didn't get hurt, and if you did get hurt,
I hope, I hope this countryis taking care of you. Sadly,
I know that we don't. Wedon't treat our veterans as well as we
treat people who came here unlawfully, and that really rubs me the wrong way.
(02:13:35):
I don't want to get off onthat tangent right now. Only got
about a minute left, but yeah, that that until we're taking our taking
our veterans and our homeless people moreseriously and making sure that they've got what
they need, then we need toWe need to write this ship is what
we need to do, and it'sit's gonna. I can go do the
(02:14:01):
things I like to do, andI'm gonna I'm gonna try to keep us
doing that for as long as Ican. I like coming in here and
talking to you guys, every oneof you. I love hearing from you.
I like the phone calls. Ilike the email. I've got a
wonderful group of people who listen tothis program every day, every Saturday and
Sunday anyway, and about half ofyou are over on fifty plus now too.
I like seeing the emails from youguys, I really do once we
(02:14:26):
get a little more stuff done. And by the way, you can send
me a message anytime now fifty it'sset up for fifty plus, but not
for this show. But you cansend me a message by calling Pound two
fifty and then use the keyword fiftyplus. It'll still come to me even
if you're listening to this show.So we can take advantage of that little
(02:14:46):
setup I've got for my senior audienceand use it. Use it to ask
me an outdoors question doesn't bother me. Use it to ask a golf question,
doesn't bother me. It'll all stillcome to me. All you gotta
do is I'll pound two fifty andthen just say fifty plus and you'll you
get fifteen seconds to leave a voicemail. So no books, just straight up
(02:15:09):
question, straight up comments. AndI'm not thin skinned. If you don't
like something I'm doing, let meknow. I might change it, might
not, but i'll If I don't, I'll tell you why. All right.
That's gonna wrap it up for today. Memorial Day weekend started, well,
really it started yesterday afternoon. Huhuh. By the way, the
crazy people are on the roads, there's a little room between cars. Today,
(02:15:31):
they're out there. If you're gonnabe around the water, keeping eye
on the kids, for having's sakes. Grown Ups are gonna do dumb stuff
because they're just grown ups. Butkeep an eye on the kids. They
don't know any better. Safety.Safety, Safety on the road, on
the water, everywhere you go.Try to stay safe so we can all
be back here tomorrow and for manymany years to come. Happy Memorial Day
(02:15:54):
weekend, Well not happy, it'ssomber. Remember why you're out there,
Remember why we're able to do this. Be back tomorrow at eight audios
