(00:01):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by American Shooting Centers Guns
Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now here's Doug Pike. All right.
Sunday edition of the program starts rightnow. I hope you've had a
good weekend so far and that therest of it works out even better than

(00:22):
yesterday did. I had a mixedbag yesterday. I finally I got a
little bit of work done after theshow and then got home and my plan
was to go work on my shortgame and my putting. But the end
result of that plan was more likewatching a couple of innings of the Astros

(00:47):
game. And by the way, when my wife comes upstairs and wants to
visit, she doesn't like the TVon while we're visiting because she thinks it's
a distraction, and it is,of course. But so I was getting
bits and pieces of that game becausewe had things we needed to talk about.
I didn't even know it at thetime I hear it. I heard

(01:11):
a comedian. I listened to alot of satellite radio PGA Tour Network a
lot, and did a little bitof comedy, a little bit of music,
and there was a comedian. Iwish I could remember his name now,
because he talked about how women don'trealize that when when they're talking to
their spouses or partners or whatever, when they're talking to one of us.

(01:34):
The only this is what he said. It's not my thought. Okay,
I want to I want to makethis perfectly clear. The only thing we're
thinking about is what we can saythat will shut them up. And no,
that's of course not Melvin. You'renot that way, are you?

(01:55):
No way? No me same here. I don't know what he's talking about.
I have no idea, oh myword. In any event, we
talked, and it was frustrating becauseI would finally at break points in the
conversation, I'd go, Alexa, what's the Astro score? And when I
started it was nothing to nothing,And then all of a sudden, I'm

(02:17):
I'm missing chunks. It's like I'veawakened from a brief coma to find out
that the Astros have scored two orthree runs, Like dang, I missed
all of that. They haven't scoreda whole lot of runs in the last
week or so, and I missedit. I missed them. And then
okay, it's two to nothing, then it's three to nothing, then it's

(02:38):
five to nothing. I did notsee the Astros score any of their runs
yesterday, and yet I felt likeI was engaged with the game because I
was getting those brief updates from mywhat do you call what do they call
those in home personal assistance or whatever? In home electronic devices? Is that
close enough? Alexa and Siri arethey're gonna They're gonna team up with some

(03:05):
somebody from AI. There's some AIgenerated partner, and they're gonna rule the
world. Won't be long. Idon't think I'm hearing and seeing so much
AI stuff, and it's being usedeven a little bit in fishing. I
saw something last night about there's athere's a website I think it is.
You can go to an app youcan get now that uses AI to turn

(03:30):
you and me and Melvin and anybodyelse who wants to into somebody who can
produce a television show. You youdial up, you get in say hey,
this is gonna be about uh.Two dudes that talk on the radio
about hunting and fishing and camping andgolf and skiing, and they do it

(03:53):
on the weekends, and they're bothincredibly handsome and nice people and should be
paid more than they're being paid andso and then you just push a button
and this thing starts spitting out scripts. Oh and by it's a comedy,
it's it's a drama. It's there, there are other characters, and all

(04:15):
of a sudden, Ai does allthe work for you. Well, yeah,
you know what we could program andthe actors in our we're gonna be
doing. We're gonna be doing theacting. I'll just start typing this in.
Okay, So we're gonna be doingthe acting, and we're gonna type

(04:38):
in our salaries. I'm just gonnalet Ai know that it needs to find
a way, somehow somewhere to getsponsors for our show that are gonna pay
us, I don't know, forthe friend's money. Sounds about right,
a million an episode, and ifwe'll just you know, we'll do ten
the first year to take it easy. We don't want to overwork ourselves and

(05:00):
just tap our talent pool. Youdon't want to waste it all in one
season. We could. It couldbe about fishing, That's what it would
be. It wouldn't be about theradio. It'd be about fishing and hunting
and skiing, and what do youwant to do, Melvin that that's on
my list. It's throwing some huntingas well. Yeah, we'll do that.

(05:21):
Yeah, I'll I'll wake up fromthis dream in just a second.
Oh my gosh seven one three two, one two five seven ninety Email me
Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. Butto dream, uh, you know,
I honestly, I had so muchfun doing what I did at the newspaper

(05:42):
and and being with especially Dogget.Joe Dogget and I became very good friends
and still are to this day.We don't bounce into each other as often
as we used to because back whenwe were working together, in addition to
working together, we were always plottingour next trip somewhere, and we made
a lot of trips together, bothjust around here, all over Southeast Texas,

(06:06):
all over South Texas. We traveledto the Bahamas together, We went
to the to Mexico probably ten twelvetrips, either fishing or surfing or both,
and just had a lot of fun. We were we were getting paid
to write about the fun we had. But as I had to explain to

(06:26):
my wife so many times, whenI said, you know, I gotta
go fishing again this weekend. Igotta go fishing again on Tuesday or on
Wednesday or whatever day it was.You can't be a carpenter if you don't
know how to swing a hammer.Okay, you can't write about something if
you don't know how to do it. So that's what we did. We
had a lot of fun. Sevenon three two one two five seven ninety
Email Medugpike at aiheartmedia dot com.I got an email early early this morning

(06:51):
from a man named Hig who isdriving in from San Antonio as we speak.
I believe, I presume that hesent the email I think around six
thirty, and he mentioned that heis coming here. He's going to spend
a few days in Houston, andhe wondered if I knew any good bank
fishing spots for bass at Lake Conroe. Now this ties in pretty well with

(07:16):
what we were talking about yesterday abouthow many different places there actually are in
this big city of ours. Onthe outskirts granted, inside the loop tough
tough call. Outside the loop, outside Beltway eight, outside ninety nine.
The farther you get out from Houston, obviously, the better your chances are

(07:38):
going to be. To find adecent place to go bank fish for bass.
But it's here, It's there,It's everywhere, And he wanted to
know about Lake conroll. My gutsays, why would you drive right past
the Woodlands, which we talked aboutyesterday and has at least a dozen really
good little walk up, park yourcar, get out and start walking the

(08:01):
bank bass fishing lakes to drive allthe way to Lake Conroe, which I
don't know. I would guess theshoreline of Lake Conroe at this point is
probably at least sixty percent, ifnot seventy five or eighty percent private property,
Saint Augustine, bulkhead, boat dock, the same old stuff all the

(08:22):
way around Lake Conroe, except fora few small places. But I thought,
you know, I got to givethis guy a chance. I gotta,
I gotta see if I can,I can start with with a legit
answer to his question, are thereplaces to bassfish from the bank at Lake
Conroe? So I got on theinternet, of course, and actually discovered

(08:43):
that there are several websites devoted tobank fishing Lake Conroe, several sources of
information. Now, much of thatis about catfish, maybe a little perch,
fishing things like that, But thereare some some bass fishing secret holes.
There are no secrets, by theway anymore, not with drones and

(09:09):
not with GPS. Drones and GPSeliminated every secret spot on planet Earth the
second both of them got married andhad little electronic babies. So what I
did find though, that I foundinteresting was a site that actually popped up
on Texas A and M's stuff. It's an Aggie based site that that goes

(09:33):
into where did I put this holdon there? It is bank fishing Lake
Conroe. Yeah, this Texas Aand M site, It included great bank
fishing places in the woodlands on LakeConroe and in Huntsville. They piled them
all into one place so that ifyou wanted to just start in the middle

(09:56):
and start driving in bigger and biggercircles round and around, you would eventually
pass. I don't know, Ididn't look at the site itself, but
that title in that little headline, that subject line intrigued me that it's going
to cover the bank fishing opportunities inthat bigg in area. So if you
were staying up there, if he'sor if he's staying even in the woodlands,

(10:18):
none of those three places would betotally out of range. The Woodlands
obviously is the closest, then LakeConroe, and then Huntsville. But there's
and I was never in any doubtthat there are good bass fishing places that
you can just walk, drive up, park your car, take ten twenty

(10:39):
thirty fifty steps, and be bassfishing. Is it going to be the
same as going to Lake Ohivy andusing high tech electronics to pinpoint the locations
of monster bass? No, butif you can, if you can put
your say, level of expectation onthe same plane as did young eight year

(11:03):
old Willow, whose dad sent mea picture yesterday of her holding up a
bass she caught on one of thelakes in the Woodlands, about a pound
and a half fish. I guessgreat bass. Caught it just standing there
on a dock or on the bank, one of the two. I can't
recall where the photograph was taken, exactly. Big smile, big smile because

(11:24):
she caught a bass. Same samesmile Higgs going to have when he catches
a nice bass somewhere up there.Or you could do it on the west
side of town, or you coulddo it on the east side of town,
on the south side of town, anywhere around Houston. There is so
much water in Southeast Texas. Whenthe before one of the Show Houston opens

(11:45):
many years ago, I got acall and was asked if I would like
to join some other media people fora ride. This was on the I
think the Wednesday before the tournament proam day, a ride on the Goodyear
blimp. I said, oh yeah, I am absolutely one hundred percent in
to fly in the Goodyear blimp andtake a look at the golf course.

(12:11):
Well, I got there the morningthat this was all scheduled and there was
the blimp sure enough, right outthere on the tarmac. There were five
or six guys out there hanging around. They had all the lines tied down.
And I walked into the hangar wherewe were all supposed to meet,
and there was just one young womansitting behind a very stark desk. I

(12:37):
said, holy cow, I feltlike I was going to be a little
late. Or did we postpone theflight or what's going on? Where is
everybody? She said, you arethe only person who signed up. I
said, really, I guess we'renot going then? Huh. She goes,
oh, no, you're going they'regonna make the flight anyway, because
they've got to get up and geteverything mapped out about where they want to

(12:58):
go, when they want to bein all these certain places, they'll be
doing some of that. I'm cool, I'm in. So I get up
there, and fifteen to twenty minutesinto this flight, we puttered around what
was then Redstone and is now GolfClub of Houston, or might have been
even at the Woodlands maybe that yearmay have been. Anyway, we're flying

(13:20):
around in circles and the pilots gettingbored and the crews getting bored, and
one of them, I can't rememberwho, said, what do you do
at the newspaper exactly? Do youdo anything to do anything other than golf?
I said, oh, yeah,I do outdoor stuff. And they
said, really yeah, we alllike to fish. Really well, let's

(13:41):
go look at some stock tanks.Let's just see what's up here. And
so we spent about an hour onGood Year's time and riding around probably everywhere
I would say from what's now Beltwayeight up to and through the Woodlands and
then a pretty significant distance west ofthere. And I came back with about

(14:05):
I don't know six eight ten rollsof film shot. When the guys processed
it in the photography in the blackdark room, they said, what is
all this, man? And theywere all pictures of stock tanks and studying
the stock tanks, looking at howmuch algae was growing on them. And

(14:28):
it was summertime, I want tosay, and looking at some of them
were much clearer than others, andI was trying to determine why some had
a lot of structure. And whenI got back in and got my contact
sheets back, I printed up abunch of them, and I was really
focused in studying these stock tanks tolearn how and where the water is in
them, and how deep some ofthem may be. All this stuff,

(14:50):
I just I became fascinated with stocktanks from the air because there were no
drones then, and I just Iwas absorbed by it for about, I
don't know, a week and ahalf. Then I found something else that
got my eye. All right,we gotta take a little break here on
the way out Shooter's Corner, PalmerHighway twenty nine Street in Texas City,
run for gosh better part of fortytwo years now by someone I consider one

(15:15):
of the finest humans on the planet. That's Jerry TK and his son Jay,
who was walking in his footsteps walkingin Jerry's two of the best guys
I know, honest to goodness, just straight up. If they tell you
something's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. If they tell you they'll take care
of a gun for you, they'lltake care of a gun for you.
A couple of the best gun smithsI know and have helped so many listeners
of mine fix problems that other gunsmith'seven had told them, Hey, you're

(15:39):
probably gonna need to replace that wholebarrel. You're probably gonna need to just
scrap that gun and get a newone. Well, Jerry and Jay will
We'll tell you the truth whatever itis. But in most cases they're gonna
be able to fix whatever was broken. They got plenty of guns, they
got plenty of Ammo optics, Camoreloading supply, and just good people.

(16:02):
A handful of people's all that workfor them, but they all know their
stuff. They all are there becausethey are neck deep in the shooting sports.
In the shooting industry, the shooters. Cornertx dot com is the website
if you wear a badge for aliving. You get a discount, which
I think is pretty dog one nicethe shooters Corner TX dot com. We

(16:25):
are sports Stock seven ninety. Areyou ready listen online at sports seven ninety
dot com. Now more Doug FikeSports Talk seven ninety to Doug Pike Show.
Thanks for listening. Certainly do appreciateit. I'm looking at the surfcam
down at ninety first Street pier inthe water. The sun's on it enough
that I can tell you right nowthe water is just dirty again and ugly,

(16:47):
and it looked like it was tryingto clean up actually a little bit
yesterday as the wind came off ofit. But now we got guys surfing
about probably two thirds of the wayout to the teahead on that pier on
the west side of it, anda pretty good break actually coming through.
There's a really nice way going throughnow that nobody caught. Oh Mercy,

(17:11):
Dave, what's up up here?I'm still up here. Hey, the
beach boys, man, I tellyou what them boys right there. That
was a good band. Man.Oh man, I'm telling you, oh,
real quick, before I go totell him about where you can go
fish at y'all collect little cars andstuff like that. And I found a

(17:32):
delaureon man that's got dynamite on theback from the goss Back to the future.
Yeah. Yeah, anyway, No, if you go go out forty
five, get off it. Getoff at Shepherd Hill, Danville, Shepherd
Hill Cemetery Road, make a hardleft, be careful because you know it's

(17:52):
kind of a sometimes they got theloops around there and everything. And then
get it over there and then godown to Calvary Road. Make it right
and you'll be stole away marine.Oh yeah, and if you part yeah,
if you park there, that's wherethe fish dude goes out of all
the time. And there's plenty ofplaces if you go in there and ask

(18:12):
them, yeah, and ask them, you know hey, and they'll tell
you yeah. You can fish overhere. You can fish there, and
you can go walk if you wantto walk and be careful on the rocks
underneat the bridge. You can fisharound over there. That wouldn't be a
bad place to be, yeah,I know. And then here's the thing,
uh, you know you can youmay catch a bass, you may

(18:33):
catch a crappie, you may catcha catfish. You never do know,
could catch a perch, couldn't hookit back out A grass or a grass
car. What word, Man,that's a flashback to the what the nineties,
I guess early nineties, maybe midnineties, when all those grass cars
were just eating up every bit ofvegetation in Lake conra Hey, you know

(19:00):
that's what I was out, andthen Stubblefield Lake. Oh okay, but
I'm talking about the part of thesouth one where it goes down in and
then it would go to the farnorth of the Lake Como. Okay,
you can go down there. There'sa boat launch there and I put my
boat in there, and I justwent right around the corner and I seen

(19:22):
this little stiff cup right there, and I cast it in there. Man,
my ride bent over and I wasusing the top water it was.
It looked like a perch. Itlooked like a perch, and that thing
blew up and I'm fishing this thingand all these people see me fighting,
and they come over there and theirboats and they're watching it. It was
a sixteen pound grass car, andI thought they I thought they weren't supposed

(19:47):
to eat live. No, they'renot supposed to Maybe thought, I don't
know, maybe it thought it wasa banana or something. I don't know.
That's a true story. The funniest, you know, and the funniest
bait that I ever heard of forpeople who were catching those grass cart was
there was a fly fisherman up thereand after observing the grass cart coming up

(20:07):
and eating the lawn clippings because theyhad eaten up everything else. People would
be mowing their lawns and either blowingthe you know, letting the lawn mooar,
blow the grass in or just throwingit in or whatever. They're just
littering up the lake. But thebottom line is the grass carp were eating
that. And he went to ahardware store somewhere, bought a piece of
astro turf, came home and startedtying flies made of astro turf and just

(20:32):
ate those fish up man belief funny. Hey, then you could actually tie
up some real grass on there too, just give flavor, you know,
and let it flow. But howyou know, And I'll tell you what.
When that thing comes to the topof the waters, I wanted to
throw my roden reel into the lake. Their big old thing was a big

(20:57):
sixteen pounds. I thought it wasthe biggest fish. Well it ain't one
of the biggest bits I ever caught. But you know that would have been
a bath. You know, ifthat would have been a bess, I'd
be, oh, yeah, you'llbe in the share Lunker program man about
number probably about number twenty five orso on the Texas biggest ever. But

(21:18):
it was nasty old rubber lip carpnow, you know what. And I
did. It was legal to bringhim home back then, because this is
a long time ago. And Ibrought it home. I sit down and
brought it home in the neighbor acrossthe street, took it to work,
and gave it to some of thepeople up there. Did there was not

(21:40):
There was a guy who fished commerciallyfor those carp on Lake Conroe for the
longest time, and he's had avery very simple aluminum boat. He had
five or six pretty heavy rods, stuff you'd use for big red fish on
the coast. And he would goout and be a place up and catch
ten or twelve of them every dayand haul them down into downtown Houston and

(22:03):
sell them in some of those smallmarkets down there. And I did an
interview with the guy and he wasmaking this is you know, this is
a good twenty five thirty years agoand he was knocking off a couple of
hundred dollars a day doing that.Whoa, Yeah, that ain't bad verial
money. Yeah, that ain't bad. Hey, that's like what we if
we we played for well, ittake played four or five hours on the

(22:26):
stage, but did it takes youeight hours all together? And we made
two hundred and fifty three hundred dollars. Yeah, that wasn't bad. Scratch,
not at all. Not just tostand there and sing a song.
No, hey, because that's becausethat's easy and for free. Yeah,
I do the singing for free. But they lived and load and nuts.
Oh my gosh. Yeah that's agood point. Yeah, you pay somebody

(22:48):
to do that for you, allright, pardon man. We did have
roadies, Yeah we had some roaddid you really? Yeah, yes we
did. Did you have a groupof years? Did you have groupies?
Uh? We had a few hereand there. I can't talk about that
on rate library. Well, itdepends on what you say. They're just
they're fans, that's all they are. No, no, no, But

(23:14):
I'm just saying there would be somany nice ladies that would come up to
you and want they would want toteach you how to dance, you know,
because they didn't. They were wewere at the wedding and they were
like a bridesmaid and they needed tolearn a few steps. They well,
yeah, they no, I'm serious, they didn't know how to dance.
And they were all tightened up.And I'm like, just relax and following

(23:37):
me and listen, you know. And and then by the time I got
there with him, they were spinning. And for them, I bet they
were. I gotta take a breaka little to him, I dave,
we'll see, buddy, audience. He left them spinning and twirling the vapors,

(23:59):
I do believe. Oh my TimberCreek Golf Club, uh twenty three
fifty one down there in Friendswood, twenty seven holes, beautiful place to go
play golf on today or any otherday. You can sneak out and not
get rained on around here. Excellentfood, great teaching facility. Now that
JJ Woods is all locked and loadeddown there and ready to go. And

(24:22):
JJ Wood's golf Performance Center sitting rightthere next door to the practice range outside
the clubhouse. And if the ballsyou're hitting on that range aren't flying in
relatively the same direction. Maybe goknock on that door and say, hey,
I need some help, man,I need help bad. They'll say,

(24:44):
come right in. You're gonna beokay. They'll take care of you.
Don't you worry. With twenty sevenholes, they're getting people out twice
as fast as a traditional eighteen holecourse. That's how it works. And
you can get around there and playeighteen. You can play all twenty seven
if you're tough enough, and letthem know what you want to do now
to make sure you get that doneas well. Could be a pretty good
day for that today. I thinkI don't think it's going to rain too

(25:06):
bad. It's supposed to not rain. It better not, I hope not.
Timber Creek Golf Club my favorite onthe South Side for sure. I've
been playing down there for twenty fiveyears or more, however long they've been
open, because I was on there, part of that, part of that
evaluation team. Within weeks of themopening the gate down there. Timbercreekgolf Club

(25:26):
dot Com. Set a tea time, go play Timbercreekgolf Club dot Com.
Your Rockets and Astros live here.We are Sports Talk seven ninety. The
conversation continues this as the Doug FikeShow, Hey thirty three on Sports Talk
seven ninety. Yes, I knewwe were lied. That's why I had
to stop yapping at you and pushthe button and start talking to everybody.

(25:48):
But thank you for the reminder, because every now and then I'll just lose
my mind and somebody has to reinme. In Melbourne and I were talking
during the break about different lure types, and the two things that I said
are common in the evolution of luresis number one, they're going to get
more technical, and number two, they're going to get more expensive. I
was telling him. We were talkingabout top waters, and I was telling

(26:11):
him that when I started throwing topwaters, the price, the price for
a pretty good one was a coupleof bucks, and the price for a
really good one was maybe five fivesix bucks tops. I can't remember any
lures for a very long time sellingfor more than about five dollars. That

(26:33):
was a lot, and that wasback when you could get a beetle spin
for about forty nine cents. Andthey have evolved now to where, my
goodness, just walk through the tacklestore anytime you like and go look at
ten twelve, fifteen, eighteen, twenty bucks for one lure. And what
I was telling Melvin that what's hardabout that if you were gar aranteed you'd

(27:00):
never lose that lure on anything buta monster fish, it would be easier
to justify the expense. But,like I was telling him, especially with
bass fishing now, not so muchwith bay fishing or offshore fishing, but
with bass fishing, if you're reallygonna throw your lures into places where bass
are likely to be, you're gonnahave to You're gonna have to bounce them

(27:22):
off tree limbs, You're gonna haveto drag them through heavy vegetation in the
water, and all you're gonna haveto subject them to all sorts of peril
between where they land and being backsafe and warm at the end of your
rod for another cast. And ifyou're if you're hesitant to throw in those

(27:47):
places, you're not gonna catch asmany fish as the guy who doesn't care.
I I don't want to spend sevenor ten or twelve dollars on a
spinner bait. I don't want tospend twelve or fifteen dollars on a crank
bait because I know I'm gonna throwthem up in that stuff because I know,

(28:08):
well, at least my mind wantsto convince me that every little pocket
of water that I don't throw into, that's where the biggest fish in the
lake was. And if I don'ttake a swing, if I don't put
that lure in there, I'll neverknow and if I'm gonna lose a lure
like I did two days in arow actually this past week, two days

(28:32):
in a row, I lost crankbaits. But the total cost on both
those crank baits was less than tendollars, And I just you know,
that's the price of playing. Ifyou're gonna play the game, you know,
if you're gonna play baseball, you'regonna break a few bats. That's
just how it is. Unless youcan't hit, you kni'ds swing it hard

(28:53):
enough. I've been trying to getmy son to to listen a little bit
to what I know and then towatch some of the videos I'm watching on
hitting and try and improve his ownhitting. And he's just like, yeah,
that I know, I've already Igot a coach. Right now,
I'm thinking, holy cow, man, holy cow, that coach of his

(29:15):
was a great baseball player. There'sno question about it. He was a
great baseball player. I've heard itfrom other people than him too. He
doesn't talk about it much, buteverybody I talk to who knows the man
says, oh, yeah, hehe was there. He was there.
He was one of the better ones. But I know a little bit about
baseball too, and I know whenit's I know when I can help somebody

(29:37):
and when I have to hand himover to somebody else that I've handed him
over to this coach. And Idon't mind at all because I trust the
guy one hundred percent. But I'malso seeing little things that he might benefit
from. And it's the same withfishing. If you want to become a
better fisherman, you can do iton your own. You can learn by

(29:59):
the CD pants, but there's onlyso much you can learn by doing it
yourself and watching other people, maybeon videos. And that's an advantage that
I didn't have growing up. Butnow you can watch all these people on
videos. You can go to differentwebsites that have tons of phishing information.

(30:21):
The most valuable stuff is always videobecause you can actually see it in action,
see how it happens. But nonetheless, reading about it is also a
valuable way just to soak in stuffthat doesn't have to be shown in video.
I did a piece for Saltwater Sportsmanon night fishing for tuna, and
you don't have to have a wholelot of video to describe what I described

(30:45):
in that piece and what the peopleI interviewed described to me. It was
mostly about baits, selection, aboutdepth, about technique, tackle things like
that that doesn't really require video. But if you want to become a better
bay fisherman, or if you wantto learn how to rig offshore baits,
or if you want to become abetter bass fisherman targeting structure or pockets and

(31:11):
grass, stuff like that, thevideo is going to help you a lot.
So I would encourage watching all thatand asking all the questions you can
of people who you think know alittle bit more about fishing than you do.
I still ask questions every trip Imake. Whoever hosts me and I'm
on their water, I want toknow how they do it. And that

(31:33):
served me so well when I wasat the paper, because when I would
travel, I ended up fishing insomething like I don't know, I think
I fished routing now in thirty fourstates, something silly like that, and
every time I went somewhere else,I always wanted to know how they did
it. I didn't want to comein and just shove my techniques down their
throats. But I also after findingout how they did it and doing that

(31:57):
for a little while, I wouldjust kind of subtly stop and do something
that we do here. Because Iwas catching the same fish in a lot
of places, largemouth bass, largemouthbass, speckled trout, speckled trout,
redfish, redfish. I was catchingmostly the same fish that I would chase
back here, except for when Iwas chasing big snook in Florida, and

(32:17):
a friend of mine just got backfrom a snoot trip in Florida, and
I am so jealous. I needto get back down there. But mostly
we're catching the same fish, andyou would think that the same techniques would
work, but in some places theydidn't because the fish just didn't see the
same diet as our fish do.The fish were in far clearer water than

(32:39):
our fish tend to be, Sothere are always different little things popping up
that you might notice and be ableto share with somebody halfway around the Gulf
coast or something. I'll never forgetrunning down a shoreline in Louisiana, somewhere
in South Louisiana, I can't rememberwhere it was. We're running down the

(33:00):
shoreline. I'm fishing with a professionalguide, and this is twenty five thirty
years ago, I don't know,fishing with a professional guy who's been on
the water a long time. Andwe're running down this shoreline in about maybe
three feet of water and between andprobably one hundred yards off the Bay shoreline.

(33:21):
And as we're running I look behindus and there are little tiny slicks
just popping up all over the place. And I tapped the guy on the
shoulder and said, hey, man, you're gonna fish those slicks. He
goes, what? And he shutdown because he didn't understand me. He
wanted to hear what I had tosay. Are you gonna fish those slicks?

(33:42):
He goes, what are those?Honest to goodness, he said,
what are those? I said,Well, where I'm from, when you
see stuff like that popping up ona shoreline when you're running down it,
that means that there are trout orredfish or something in there, maybe gafftop,
who knows, but they're coughing stuffup cause they're kind of they're reacting

(34:04):
to that noise and whatnot. AndI mean these are like garbage can lids
popping up in there. These arefresh, beautiful slicks. He said,
well, I don't know, I'venever done it. Let's try it.
What do I do? So Irolled him back around, got him up
when of these slicks. There wereno troll motor back then, not on
a bay boat. Got him up, when of the slicks, and we're

(34:29):
drifting down on them. And aswe drift down that shoreline, at one
point we got into a position wherethat smell, that unforgettable fresh mode grass,
whatever you want to call it,smell, that is a fish slick.
And he goes, what's that?I said, that's fish, that's
fish, And about that time, bam, he got smoked, absolutely smoked.

(34:52):
We were throwing gigs back then.It would have been a cooler story
if they were top waters, butthey weren't. But that guy that just
opened his eyes to fishing slicks. And now the whole time we rode around
for two days after that, that'sall he did was look for slicks.
Is that a slick right there? No? No, that's not. Uh
anyway, that's how that happened sevenone three two one two five seven ninety

(35:15):
Email me Doug pick At, iHeartMediadot com. I've been schooled a lot
of times too, but I've alsoI had the good fortune to to to
share stuff with people. And mysharing actually on Chesapeake Bay cost me a
whole box of top waters once.Uh, because they didn't believe that stripers
would eat top waters, and Ishowed them that they would and they didn't

(35:37):
have any. And the tackle storevery quickly, I know, Melvin,
I'll be out in a second. But the tackle store in that town,
little bitty town. I said, where could I go to find some lures?
And they told me and that thatwas where they shop. Everybody shops
there. They didn't have a topwater lure in the tackle store, not
one. And I'm getting them blownout of the wall by twelve to twenty

(36:00):
pounds stripe bass in five feet ofwater. It was awesome. Relaxed,
Doug, take a breath. Soyou're driving along, dreaming of catching giant
fish on top waters, cruising downthe highway, and all of a sudden

(36:21):
you hear that little pick like that. You know what it was? Something
hit your windshield and now You justgot to find out whether it cracked it,
or it chipped it, or itbroke it, or false alarm.
If it turns out not to bea false alarm, do what I did
about what three weeks ago. Now, Ha, Lisa, if you're listening

(36:42):
this morning, call VIP Auto Glass. I called him, I explained what
happened. I explained who told meabout them? Because they like to know
that where'd you where'd you hear aboutus? Tell them you heard about it
from me, and they will sendto you to your to your office.
They had their guy come to myoffice and had me taken care of within

(37:07):
forty eight hours. It would havebeen twenty four except for a paperwork issue
we had to deal with. Butonce that guy got here, he told
me it would take two hours. It only took an hour and a half
and Bam, bam done. Igot a brand new windshield. The computer
stuff in there has been reprogrammed perfectly, which is something if you have a
newer car you just hold on tightbecause it's it's not inexpensive, but it

(37:31):
has to be done for your carto have all its safety features working properly.
I called several places in town actuallyand Vip even without asking, offered
me the lowest price I could find, and they came recommended, which is
what I'm doing for you. I'mrecommending them to you, And so I

(37:52):
trusted them from the person who recommendedthem, and I could not have been
more pleased. Straight up true.Vip Auto Glass took care of me.
They took care of my wallet, and they took care of my car.
Vipautoglass dot Com is the website ifyou want to kind of take a look
around the phone number which you oughtto put in your car. So if

(38:15):
you do get a rock chip Iget, there would probably be days when
they could do it same day.If you've got a chip early this morning
and you called them, or tomorrowmorning or whenever and you called them,
they could probably be there that sameday. Two eight one eight zero seven
fourteen eighty eight two eight one eightzero seven fourteen eighty eight. We are

(38:38):
Sports Stock seven ninety Houston Sports Whereyou go with iHeartRadio Now now get more
Doug He's bound and down of God. It's so sad to say I remember
this show. I'll tell you astory, Melvin about CB Radios that I've
told on the air before. Butit's been years since I've told it,

(39:00):
so maybe there's somebody who hadn't heardit. So here's the deal. A
friend of my dad years ago complainedthat not once, but twice. You
remember you? Do you remember Ceberadios or are you old enough to remember
them? Sure do? I hadone to myself, What was your handle?
Good buddy? What was your handle? Do you remember what you called

(39:22):
yourself? No? I would usuallytalk to like a little taxi cab drivers.
Okay, Well, in any event, this friend of my dad's had
one, and it was one ofthose fancy ones that was just a slide
in slide. When they started gettingstolen, they made those slide ones where
you could just reach in behind themand pull them out, take them in
the house and be okay. Well, this guy, after losing two of

(39:45):
those, decided that he would dosomething to safeguard his CBE radios, and
he spent about thirty minutes. Hetold my dad out in his at his
work bench in the garage, andhe took three or four big treble hooks.

(40:06):
He cut the eyes off of them, and he soldered them to the
back of the radio. Okay,so you got four treble hooks, three
points on each one of them facingbackward, and he just went to sleep
feeling pretty good about things. Andit was a couple of weeks later,

(40:28):
in the middle of the night,he's awakened by beep, beat beat,
beep, beat me beat a horn, car horn beeping and beeping. Walks
out there and there's a guy leanedover the front seat of his car with
both hands behind that thing and impaledon all those hooks. Wow, just

(40:51):
beat beat, beeping his brains out, trying to get somebody to come help
him. And then he goes, help me, man, help me.
He goes the police, will helpyou. They're on their way, and
sure enough, Yeah, he hadjust locked that thing in there with those
hooks. Now, I am notadvocating that anybody do anything like that to
thwart thieves, but holy cow, there's a lot of thievery going on.

(41:15):
Maybe we could put a couple ofmonths some catalytic converters. Holy cal.
I saw a story about that yesterdaythat some cars. It's not that it's
not that the catalytic converter is soexpensive, they just can't get them.
There's a supply chain issue, andsome of the fancier nicer cars. If
you lose your converter, it couldbe four to six months before you can

(41:39):
drive that car again. So beware, beware, might want to be doing
that. Some of the electronics onsome of these boats, you know,
some kind of a safeguard that's prettythat's pretty cruel to impale someone on fish
hooks that they never saw coming.I guess you could say he was caught

(42:00):
red handed. Yeah, I betthey were both of them. Yeah,
red handed, red carpeted below red. Yeah, but yeah, they had
to come and pry the whole radioout with him attached to it. Yeah,
wouldn't be hard to figure out whodid it, you know? Seven

(42:22):
seven ninety email on me, dougpickAt, iHeartMedia dot com. I will
I will speaking of coastal stuff, which we were a minute ago talking about
speckl trout. I made a tripover to the East coast once. I
want to say it was in theCarolina's maybe where this particular trip took place,

(42:43):
and the speckled trout we caught overthere. Uh. The first thing
I noticed is that they have avery different definition of wow, that's a
really good one than we do here. That a two pound trout where I
was fishing, wherever it was wasa good one, and okay, okay,
I would set the bar here alongthe Texas coast at at least three

(43:07):
and in some parts of the statemaybe five pounds before you say, yeah,
I got a couple of good ones. But over there they were different.
But what struck me most is thecoloration of those fish. Those fish
were more brightly colored than our speckledtrout could ever dream of being. The
spots are different, just the wholefish looks far more vibrant, and I

(43:32):
believe that's a product of the clearwater. If you've ever caught bass out
of a really clear water lake andthen a well at the golf course where
I fish them, there's one lakethat stays really clear and another lake that's
typically somewhat off color, and thedifference in coloration on those fish is tremendous.

(43:53):
The clear water fish very vibrant, very sharp contrast between the dark,
dark greens and the bright whites onthose fish. The other lake, the
lake where not so much sunlight getsin there, that's just all kind of
drab and pale, and they justdon't look as pretty as those clear water

(44:15):
fish. And I think that hadsomething to do with how beautiful those speckled
trout were in the Carolinas. Andit may it may say something also about
rainbow trout, about brook trout andbrown trout in fresh water. Vibrant color

(44:36):
on all these clear water species.I wondered. The next time, I'm
gonna stop and think about that. The next time we have next winter,
when we have a stocking of thelittle rainbow trout, I'm gonna go back
out and catch a few of themand just try to compare them. It
can't do apples to apples because Ican't just hop on my jet and fly

(44:58):
to Colorado to catch some out ofmy private river, outside my private home
on the river. That's not happening. But I'll look at some pictures,
and I bet that these hatchery raisedfish aren't nearly so pretty as the ones
that come out of the rivers.Every wild rainbow trout I've caught, every
wild brook trout and brown trout, all of them. They're just magnificently colored.

(45:22):
They're beautiful fish. And it justno wonder everybody likes to do that.
I just I just can't get awayfrom saltwater that long. It's just
not in my it's not in myDNA. My wife was talking about moving
maybe up into the Midwest somewhere asin retirement, and I just i'd let
her talk. I just let hertalk, and then said, you know,

(45:44):
honestly, I would have a veryhard time being that far from the
coast, a very far hard timebeing that far from the coast, because
I just first, I love thefishing. I at some point wouldn't mind
getting back into surfing. Once myson goes to college, I can go
back to doing some of the stuffI really like to do. Now I

(46:06):
don't mind at all. I lovegoing to his baseball tournaments. I love
going to his golf tournaments. Ilove hanging out with him. He's a
great kid, great kid to hangout with. He likes a lot of
the same things I do. He'sa pretty good fisherman. If he'd learned
to tie three knots and not counton me for that. Oh my god,
kid can't tie a knot to savea soul. It just looks like
it looks like a ball of Idon't know it. There just doesn't look

(46:30):
like a fishing not. When he'sdone, it works, but it just
doesn't all right, we got totake a little break here. Heading out,
let me tell you about Belleville MeatMarket. If you have never been

did you bring something to eat?Whip that out? How about check this

little trip out there, eat somelunch, get some stuff, and bring
it home. Belleville MeetMarket dot COM'swebsite. They're on Highway thirty six,
about fifteen minutes north of Sily, fifteen minutes south of Hempstead. Belleville MeetMarket
dot com. This is the DougPike Show, brought to you by American

(48:51):
Shooting Centers Guns Shooting at Instruction sincenineteen eighty nine. Now here's Doug Pike.
All right, second hour it startsnow. Thank you all for listening.
I'm gonna lead this hour with aquestion when I get to Alan and
I'm with him. Now, what'sgoing on? Alan? What's up?

(49:12):
I'm good man? Thank you?So uh so, I'm looking for a
bait caster, good price, youknow, not twenty million dollars, not
two dollars. What do you whatare you throw that covers a pretty good
range? Holy? Yeah, Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and tell you
no, don't buy a two dollarsbait caster, no matter who's selling it

(49:34):
to you. If it yeah,if they sell you a nice one for
two dollars, it's gonna it's gonnaburn your hands when you pick it up
every now and then you get lucky. Yeah. Ever do if I have
one on Facebook market that nobody knowswhat they have but other than that,
yeah, or a pawn shop.Have you ever looked in pawn shops?
Yeah? Yeah, I've pilled around, but you know what I mean?

(49:57):
Yes and no? Yeah, Iunderstand. So bottom line is you want
to know what something As far asa middle of the road, I don't
know how you can go wrong withkaratos. I've been throwing karatos since Karto's
first hit the market, and I'veowned probably fifteen or twenty of them,
and I still throw a couple ofthem because they still work. And I'll

(50:21):
be the first to admit, andit's kind of my own fault, but
when I was at the paper andwhen I was testing equipment for some of
these manufacturers, I deliberately didn't babysitthem, Okay. I wanted to feel
like if it would work for me, it would work for anybody. And

(50:43):
that meant not doing all the maintenanceI probably should have on them, because
hey, you know, you getyou're tired when you come home. Sometimes
you don't want to break a reeldown to the last part and get out
your Q tips and you and you'rebinocular glasses and all that to clean the
reel. You just want to poseit off and real, yeah, yeah,

(51:06):
I don't want to have to doall that every time. So the
ones that held up best for mewere the Corodos back in that day.
You interested in gear ratio or isit sticks to six zero? And that's
good enough for what? Uh?You don't have to start worrying about it.
That's kind of like buying golf clubsor and I use this analogy a

(51:28):
lot. If you can't tell mewhy the real that you're gonna buy needs
a specific gear ratio, then youdon't need the specific gear ratio. A
lot of times, the guys whoare fishing for a living will have,
uh, they'll they'll have something fasteron a couple of reels for specific lures
they want to throw. They'll havesomething slower on specific reels to kind of

(51:52):
and what you're doing is kind ofcountering adrenaline in a lot of cases.
Yeah, you don't want to lookup and realize that you're bringing your worm
back and just skipping it off thetop like a flat rock. That's too
fast exactly. But if you're justyou and me and you're out fishing for
fun and you tie on a worm, you just turn the handle slower,

(52:14):
or if you tie on a buzzbait, you turn the handle a little
faster till it comes out. Idon't think it really mattered, because I
mean, I'm I'm up, I'mnot to land up here on Lake sam
Rayburn, and I was up herewith my cousin. He lives up here
too, and we're fishing, youknow, and he let me borrow.
I left one of my rod wheelsin the truck and he left even me
borrow one of his. I thought, man, this this feels this is

(52:36):
nice. Yeah, I'm making up. I don't feel like this. And
I think he was like it wasa black Max something he bought on Walmart.
And then he got him a mediumlight sticks by six rod and I
thought, man, this is whatI want. You know, I don't
know if I go medium light.Yeah, yeah, medium light, I
think is okay for what you're talkingabout doing with it, though, that's
okay. Yeah. We were justdragging worms across flat, okay. Then

(53:00):
I was throwing it. I wasdetermined it didn't happen. But I was
dag determined to throw a white spinnermake and catch a bass. And then
I was thinking, you know,I almost put it down. I remember
what you said, you know whatyou're gonna get good as to keep using
it. I said, Okay,if I don't catch a bass, I'm
gonna keep throwing this white spinner babyuntil I do or go home. Yeah,
And of course I'm going home today. And I didn't catch a white

(53:22):
mass. I'm in a bass. That's okay, though, try again next
time, you know. So,yeah, white spinner base. I'm just
wondering. Uh, you know what, do you fish a lot of plastic
worms when you pass? I don'tfish as much. I don't fish many
worms because I don't have the patience. Now that that okay. I mentioned
yesterday that I hooked this week probablyone of the top three biggest bass I've

(53:45):
ever hooked. I saw the fish. It was right at my feet.
I was standing on a little bridge. It's about two three feet off the
water, and I saw the fishbefore it spit the lure right back in
my face. So I know howbig he was. And I'm gonna go
back in there, and I amgonna I've got a heavier rod that I'm
gonna use for this because I needto get that fish out of that cover

(54:06):
as fast as I can those pilings. But I'm I'm gonna find that guy,
and I'm gonna yankee maut well herand I'm gonna yanker out of there.
But back to the reels real quick. I would say, you're gonna
need these days probably to spend atleast one hundred and change. But you
don't have to go to the onesthat everybody kind of has fallen in love

(54:29):
with that are gonna cost you twohundred two fifty three hundred dollars unless you're
gonna be fishing every day. Youknow, if I make a living fishing,
that's one thing. Sure, you'reright, Well, yeah, that's
exactly. That's a very good wayto look at it too. What exactly
how are you gonna get your money'sworth out of a three hundred dollars reel

(54:49):
and a three or four hundred dollarsrod if you're only fishing once a month.
Yeah, yeah, you can getin the game. You know,
you can get in the game fora lot less. So yeah, I
mean I've got a bunch of oldMaybe you remember the old ad with Garcia
five thousands and all, Oh Lordhave mercy, that goes back those belonging
in the New zeal Oh yeah, yeah, I still I mean I still

(55:12):
use way over now and then becauseI just have it on one of my
own. Sure well, and youknow it, as long as you maintain
them, they will serve you well. Now, the newer stuff is smoother,
the drag systems are better, thegears are better. Everything is better.
That five thousand established a new benchmark, but everything since then has improved
upon that benchmark. And if youbuy something kind of back to golf clubs,

(55:37):
if you buy fifteen year old golfclubs, they're gonna perform like fifteen
year old golf clubs. If youbuy brand new golf clubs, even if
you have to invest a little bitmore money to get them, you're gonna
get better performance. Exactly. Youwill time. Yeah yeah, yeah,
like why yeah, okay yeah,And if you drink enough of it,

(55:57):
you don't care what reel you're throwing. I don't want to talk about that,
Okay, all right, man's audience, mercy sakes. Yeah, reels
they're a personal thing. There area lot of people who absolutely swear by
one reel or another. I'm I'mvery comfortable picking up pretty much anything and

(56:20):
throwing it. And and that's Iwould encourage all of you to just kind
of get comfortable with whatever it is. Now. You've got to make your
adjustments on those reels too. Don'tforget that your spool tension, your your
anti lock brakes or whatever you yourbreaking system, all of that can help
you get get that real dialed in. Uh, let me go talk to

(56:40):
Kyle here. What's up Kyle?Morning, Doug. How you doing,
my friends? I'm good, I'mhaving a blast. Man. You always
are. You're the best to listento. I enjoy listen to you every
weekend. Bud. Thank you somuch. Hey, I've been having a
heck of a time trying to finda good spot to get some some masks
over in the Paarland area, youknow those off ponds. But my main

(57:01):
question was do you remember the oldendays? You know, you and I
are older that we used to havecatfish farms or oh yeah, you could
take take kids and catch them, and you don't want to catch too many
because you don't have a check bookbig enough. Yeah. Boy, I
had a friend of mine real quickbefore we go back to that friend of

(57:22):
mine had his two sons with mewho loved a fish, and he said,
I'm taking them to this catfish farm. You want to go with us?
I said, sure, man,I'll go. So I get there
and it's just bit, just onebig hole in the ground with full of
water and catfish, and he parkswherever he parks, and he gets everything
set up and the kids are catchinga couple of fish here and a couple
of fish there, and he goes, ah, man, I got to

(57:43):
go to the bathroom. Well, the only bathroom up there was a portacan
back at the little office where theywade your fish and made you pay for
him. And it was a longwalk, and he said, well,
I just got to go. Sohe takes off and leaves me in charge
of these kids. The fish startbiting and we are loading them up,
buddy, We're stringing them as fastas we can. At about probably I

(58:07):
don't know the weight of those fish. Just probably cost him four or five
dollars a pomp. And he cameback and he said, howd it go?
And the kids their eyes are big? Oh Dad, we war them
out, man. And he lookedat me like, you shouldn't have done
that, dude, And they pulledup his big giant stringer of five dollar
bills and he was so pissed atme. Oh, he was so mad.

(58:34):
Sure that'd be fine, don't youworry, oh man. But anyway,
yeah, those are gone, andI think mostly Kyle because of liability
insurance, you know, And it'sit's a shame because it was fun for
the kids. It was fun foreverybody. You knew you were going home
with fish. You just had toyank the kids out of there before they

(58:59):
bankrupted you. And yeah, itwas, it was. It was a
lot of fun. I don't know. Around pair Land, I would start
with, I'm trying to think ofwhat's down there. I'd roll over to
I'd roll over to Bass Pro Shopsand ask a couple of the younger guys
in there where they fish around home, because if they're if they're living in

(59:20):
what's that they They got some pondson the Bass Pro shop property, but
they won't let you fish on.Oh no, yeah that yeah, I
know that. Yeah. I don'tknow why they do that. That would
be well once again, yeah Ido. It's liability because if they don't
know who's out there, and theydon't, you know, they're not paying
attention when some little kid wanders offand falls in the lake, then they're
responsible. Uh. What they shoulddo at a place like that is have

(59:45):
two employees out there, one ofwhom is a certified lifeguard, and they
ought to charge you five bucks totake your kids out there to catch brim
on k poles exactly. I don'tknow why they don't do that. But
I'm not in charge of bass proshops. You know. You know,
I hear you speak about you know, like your big bass you lost the
other day, and you know,I just I just love doing that.

(01:00:06):
I used to I used to lovegoing to golf courses, and of course
they don't let you do that muchanymore. Yeah, and uh, and
that's some of the best fishing. It's just so ponds. Just catch and
release. That's that's all I wantto do. Yeah, you can't seem
to find any good spots to doit at night. Well, you know
that's all I want. Here's whatyou got idea. I'll give you an
idea, Kyle. Drive around, find retention ponds, find bar ditches,

(01:00:30):
and don't look at them as aplace that doesn't have any fish in them.
Look at him as a place thatyou just hadn't caught one there yet.
I can't tell you how many placesin sugar Land look absolutely like mudholes,
like you'd never catch a fish outof there. But I've stopped and
I've spent twenty minutes fishing them, and I've caught one bass, maybe two,

(01:00:52):
And all of a sudden, youlook at them with different eyes because
there are fishing. Most of theseplaces. If that water's been there for
more than ten years, it's gotfish in it. It's cutting. They
fall from the sky. I don'tsometimes I don't know how or where they
come from, man, but theythey're in there, and you just have
to You have to spend a littletime every now and then you'll find a

(01:01:12):
dud. You know. There's oneplace that I fished that I used to
actually catch probably five or six inan hour, be pretty good, you
know, it wouldn't be bad ina big probably it's about ten or twelve
acres of water. Just a rectangularretention pond is all it is, and
it's gotten slower recently. But Iknow darn well those fish are still in
there. There's no way that thelittle neighborhood kids have caught them all and

(01:01:37):
killed them and taken them home.So and big catfish too. Some of
those retention ponds have fifteen to twentypound catfish in them, which is kind
of a surprise sometimes on a crankbait. Yeah, get out there and
try them, you know, justpark and if somebody runs you off,
just scratch that one off your list. But most places in these neighborhood lakes.

(01:01:59):
That's where there's gonna be some fishing. As long as you're not out
there setting up with a lawn chairand a grill and all that stuff.
They don't care. No, that'swhat I said. Well, Doug,
it's always a pleasures. We hopewe go fishing some days. I'd love
to. Man, I'm not thatfar from Perland. I'm in sugar Land,
and I'll make a couple of Igot a couple of guys I can

(01:02:20):
call and see if I can findsomething. Shoot me an email, I'll
see if I can find you something. Buddy. Yeah, thanks you too.
Kh See. I guess I getto talking so much. And poor
Kyle, he wanted off the phoneso fast. He was doing like what
we were talking about earlier. Withwives, you're just sitting there trying to
figure out what you can say toget them to be quiet. Oh,

(01:02:42):
man, I get fired up abouttalking about neighborhood something. My son is
a prime example of somebody you couldask where you could go catch some bass,
and he could tell you he anda buddy of his have fished all
over Southwest Houston, but well,no, all over sugar Land. Let's
call it, and there are aton of places you could just go park

(01:03:02):
your car and walk out there andstart fishing and end up, if you're
patient, end up doing pretty well. I'll call him some days on the
right days, and so yeah, man, we caught twelve today, like
holy cow, or well, weonly caught two, but they almost invariably

(01:03:22):
will catch a few. I gottabe quiet and take care of this Carter's
Country. We are inside ninety daysnow from the opening of dove season.
We should get a countdown clock, the Carter's Country countdown to dove Season.
I'm gonna talk to Laurie about that. As a matter of fact, I
think that's a fantastic idea, theCarter's Country countdown. Every week. We're

(01:03:44):
gonna count it down, even byweeks or by days, it doesn't matter,
because the sense of urgency will buildwithin all of us who are hopefully
going to be out there on openingday busting those doves as they come flying
across there pretty low usually on openingday. Then they jack it up about
to fifty yards after that. Ifyou're looking for a new shotgun for dove

(01:04:06):
season, if you're looking for anew rifle for deer season, if you're
looking for a handgun for self protectionin this well, let's just face it,
crime is not exactly going down fastthese days. If you need anything,
If you just want to go outand enjoy the shooting sports, just
go plinking. Drive up to thenorthwest side. Got the north side there

(01:04:28):
where that big range there is isat the original Carter's Country Store on Treshweed.
You can go in there, buya gun, take an instructor out
there. It can help you learnhow to shoot it, and then you
can sit out there and burn powderall day long if you want. The
great place been there forever. Everybodythat works in all the Carter's Country Stores
knows a whole lot about guns, and they can help you get started,

(01:04:53):
or they can help you find somethingvery specific. But whatever it is,
if it's related to shooting and theshooting sports cars, the Country's gonna have
it. Go get you some.Carterscountry dot Com is the website you can
find out about all their specials. You can find out about the concealed carry

This as the Doug Type show. All right, welcome back. I
promise I'll get the golf in aminute, but I got to do a

(01:05:35):
couple of things. First of all, Rickby sent me a photograph of some
cottontails that he's kinda says, he'stamed. He's a cottontail wrangler and he's
got them. He's got them roundedup. They're coming out to visit.
I bet you he's feeding them.I haven't looked at all the pictures,
but I bet you he's feeding them. And next time you go out there,

(01:05:56):
Rick, start watching for hawks inthe trees. That's what's coming next.
They'll figure you out, man, they will. Dan says, if
we get our AI stuff going,he's good. He's willing to act for
a thousand an episode, not amillion. You know, well, we'll

(01:06:17):
write him into the script. He'sa good dude, so we'll put him
down for a grin. All right, let me go talk to faux Pro.
What's up, Faux Pro? WhatMaster dud I'm doing all right,
man, didn't mean, didn't meanto bleeding to your golfer, but I
know you're good lady. Oh it'smy lazy day. So I got the

(01:06:38):
coffee, you got al Linder onTV and got to get to laundry going.
Oh, I'm telling you what I'mhigh faluting these days. Okay,
what's going on? If you hadto chant, I don't know if you
had to chance check check on himlate me. But speaking of golf real
quick, I know, uh,channel Phillips. He's been doing he's been
doing pretty well on the pro circuit, so he can go pretty well,

(01:07:01):
you know for your listen. Ohyeah, for sure for your listeners.
You know, you know, likeyou said before, you know, get
on text Parks and Walleiff website andlook at neighborhood fishing lakes and look at
the the spring you know, thewinter stock, you know, rainbow trout
stock. My daughter used to chasethem all. We're being downtown inside the
six' ten loop at the parksright there on sixteen loop right there.
Iten of Mercury, you know.Joe Dargan and I used we used to

(01:07:24):
run those traps man when we fishedlakes full of rainbow trout on all four
corners of Houston and way out theretoo. Any place we could go,
where we could be there. Withinabout forty eight hours of the talking,
we were all over it, man, just like typical old dudes. Exactly
exactly. I did say. Idid send you. When you get a

(01:07:45):
chance to look at your messager,I did send you a really cool video
on fish like you like trout.Yeah, yeah, yeah, coming airborne,
grabbing birds, dragonflies. That onefish come up and actually grab grapes
off of fine. Oh my god. We can get a chance to watch
it. Yeah, that's cool.My little story. You sparked. You
sparked. You sparked the memory whenI lived in the Wahoo in two thousand
and eight. You're talking about peoplecomparing their trout, you know, just

(01:08:08):
like people in Minnesota, say afive pound baskets of trophy went out here.
It's like, you know, whatever, your shark pound basket whatever down
here. But when I lived it, you know, you if you go
down here and get into the schoolof jack gravel, you're like, holy
crap, can we get away fromthese fish they're funding They're kind of a
trash fish down here to us,right, but I caught about a ten
to fifteen pound jack coravel off shorein the Wahoo. And granted we went

(01:08:30):
off shore in the Wahoo fourteen milesoff shore in the seventeen foot trihole Glasstron
with a seventy avenue on it.There was like a nineteen eighty five miles
Wow. So I'm like, okay, you know what you're doing. But
I caught this jack novel saw massto day Jack Corvell man, you want
me to throw back? Oh no, no, no, that's like a
prize fish and wiffe, that's likea trophy bass to us oh the Hawaii.
And I just thought that was interesting. Depending on what are a certain

(01:08:53):
fish we call trash, they rarelysee them. The guys over on the
East cod crap, the guys overon the East Coast absolutely or just they
get giddy over schools of five tofifteen pound jackfish and they'll chase them all
over a bay system. It's yeah, I just don't get it. You
know. They're a great fight, they're fun. They're fun for the first

(01:09:14):
couple of them, but then afterthat it's like, Okay, I want
to let's go do something else. Now I've done that and I've been spooled
a couple of times by jackfish whenI had very light trout tackle on years
ago, And yeah, I don't. I used to catch bazillions of them
off the piers in galveson when thewatered green up. We throw a big
old chunk of mullet or something outthere, or man Hayden and catch jackson.

(01:09:39):
But yeah, they're they're not myfavorite anymore. And even here in
Texas, that's it's the last thing. Even here in Texas, it's it's
funny like Lake Livyson here is abig white bass lake. Yeah, people
love to catch your white bass. And me and you remember JR. Richard
Houston, Yeah, recipe. Hewas a good fishing buddy, my good
fishingman. Let him long this oldunt story for another day. But we

(01:10:00):
were up on rising chambers this backfor they had limits, so he wanted
to go. He called me Bleed. He said, hey, Bleed,
let's go up there and catch somebody'swhite baths. I said, I Bleed,
whatever you want to do, youknow, And we would have filled
up three thirty six quad ash shipsfull of white bass, Oh my lord.
Then we get back to the marinaand uh, guys, Hey,
you have a good Yeah, wegot three ships. Oh, we got
to me see him. He'll penit up, he goes, Oh,
I si dang sand bass. Getthat crap out of my Oh what they

(01:10:25):
frowned on him up there. We'rethirteen one hundred miles south. They love
them, so they prayed the hallwayfisher tree it is. It's all just
kind of regional stuff. Read. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
It's great to hear. Great, you got to get back on that golf
game force. I'll see buddy audioman, Oh, where's that button there?

(01:10:45):
It is? Yeah, wherever yougo, there's going to be a
favorite fish and a very least favoritefit. Holy cow, hold on,
let me see what this picture.Edward said, is that the man catches
monster record breaking catfish and Oklahoma reservoir. Of course it's in Oklahoma. They
catch a lot of really big catfishup there. This one. Okay,

(01:11:06):
Melvin, these aren't the kind offish we're gonna go catch at the little
pond and we're gonna take your sonto. But guess what the weight was
of the catfish this got caught.Take a guy, let's say about fifteen
pounds, about ninety five pounds.Wow, ninety five pounds. I love

(01:11:27):
my son. Don't put them inthe water, charl Ninety five pound catfish
could eat a small dog pretty easily, I would think, holy mackerel.
Yeah, that's a beast. That'sand you know what, there are catfish
probably that size plus or minus fivepounds in Livingston and Rayburn and all of
our big reservoirs. They typically willhang out around the dam where something big

(01:11:50):
and slough's gonna come pass them bytheir nose and they'll reach out and eat
it. But holy cow, that'sa big fish, all right. Set
one three two on two seven ninetyEmail me Doug pick At. iHeartMedia dot
com. I don't mind taking fishingcalls at all, all the way to
the end if we have to.But I am gonna also get to the
golf tournaments that are going on rightnow, because there's a couple of things

(01:12:12):
I want to say, Captain ScottWade in if Jack's jumped, they'd be
the most popular game fish in Texas. Maybe that's why God made snook.
That's snook. If snook got upgot established up here back again from one
hundred years ago in the Galveston BaySystem. They be the most popular game

(01:12:34):
fish in Texas. Black Horse GolfClub the most popular. This in my
book Northwest Side Plays. To goplay golf black Horse, go two ninety
to Fry Road, Go south southabout three miles and you'll start seeing golf
course on both sides, and you'lllook and see the gate on the west
side of the road. Turn inthere, and from the time you park

(01:12:55):
your car and walk into the proshop, everybody you bump into is good
to be there strictly to make sureyou have a good time and enjoy your
round at black Horse Golf Club twocourses the North in the South, both
of which are quite different in character, but both of which are a lot
of fun to play. They trulyare, and if you're not having near

(01:13:16):
as much fun as you'd like toon the golf course, run down to
the other end of the range youget yourself some lessons. One of the
things I like about black Horse asa daily fee course is that they also
have a membership option which gets you, in addition to pro shop discounts and
in addition to preferred tea times,it also gets you unlimited range use and

(01:13:41):
that is really valuable. If you'resomebody like me who likes to work on
their game a lot. Anyplace elseyou go to hit balls, you got
to buy a bucket of balls, and then halfway through your lee, I
gotta rash. I can't hit anymore wedges, or I can't hit anymore
seven irons because I haven't hit fiveiron yet. I gotta get through all
my my three wood and my hybridand my driver and all of that.

(01:14:03):
I'm gonna have to go buy anotherbucket. Now, if you go ahead
and take advantage of that membership thing, you can show up every day and
if you're tough enough, you canget three hundred balls a day, hit
five hundred if you want all youcan stand to make yourself better. And
again, if it's not working,go to the other end. Streamline the
process a little bit. Big tournamentor just you and a buddy wanting to

(01:14:27):
go tee it up, black Horsewill accommodate you, and in grand style.
I can assure you they're beautiful courses. I love them both. Black

golf tournaments. I want to seewhat's on Roberts mind stand by, let
me find it there it is?Hey, what's up man? Good morning,
my friend? Good morning? Hey. Uh. If if my first
real big catch of the summer seasonis in the any indication of how my

(01:15:13):
summer fiction is gonna go, Imean, I guess it couldn't be worse.
Right, reeling in American flag?Oh, I know, holy cow,
go big or go home? Right? Absolutely? Yeah. I was
surprised at that picture a little bit, and I was more surprised when somebody
was actually trying to stay claim toit and take it away from you.
Yeah. I mean I know whoit be, lie though, But but

(01:15:38):
my buddy and I we actually Ithink we uh, we're claiming it and
it's gonna be my my new fishingcart banner. I think we might what
we may just do every time hecomes over to fish, because he's the
one I always catch something big orstrange when he comes over. I think
we're gonna do is We're gonna likeplay the national anthem like before the start
of a ball game before we startfishing going, and let's put it out

(01:16:00):
too. Yeah, just crank itup. Yeah. But man, I
tell you what that benita that Ibought, you know, I tried to
use. The only thing that Ithink I really took a chunk and took
it for a ride was a bigold guard. Yeah, probably the only
thing that was out there that night. I mean, that water was so
calm. I mean, it's stilla murky out back, but you know,

(01:16:21):
man, I'm just ready for thatwater to clear up. If he's
man has been brutal. You know, it was brutal with the wind and
rain, and I mean I'm hopingwe get some relief down there where it
finally just clears up. If youget dead serious about catching another shark off
that period, is what you needto do is take one banita and cut
it into chunks, and take anotherone and cut it into little bitty pieces

(01:16:42):
and put it in a bag andjust hang it off your ear. Yeah,
just let it chump, just letit bleed for days. You know,
we we talked about possibly doing somethinglike that, so like, you
know, it was the first timeto try that, but now that I
know, I'm like, all right, I would attempt it again, but
I'm gonna wait till that water isup a little bit more. Yeah,
yeah, don't be in a hurry. No, all right, by budd,

(01:17:05):
I'm gonna go to the Academy andthis window shopping. Are you jogging
to academy? Stay in shape? No, no, no, no,
I'm in the riot today. I'mgonna all right, buddy, take every
buddy, all right, I'll seeaudios. Yeah, Robert does a bunch
of fun runs that I find thosetwo terms oxymeronic at my age, you
know, honestly, goodness, holycaw. Okay, let me catch Sammy

(01:17:27):
here and one then we'll get tothe golf tournaments. What's up, Sammy,
It's sure, will I'm good togood morning. What can I do
for you? Well? I wasgood more to know, you know,
you know, go get out inthe vogue. Beer off, vote,
beer off. Is it Is itpossible for someone to catch one of them
red tat trish off the bank somewhere. Yeah? Absolutely, I'll tell you.

(01:17:51):
I worked at CCA for ten yearsas editor of the magazine, and
I got to know Bill Kenny realwell, and he and I talked lot
about that. What are the chancesof the average everyday guy catch one of
these fish, somebody who doesn't havea boat and can't get into the farthest
reaches of the bay system. Andthe truth of it is, they want

(01:18:15):
people to catch those fish. Theprices are already paid for, everything's already
you know. They want to givethat stuff away. So they release those
fish. Now, not every oneof them, but they release a significant
number of those fish in areas wheresomebody standing on dry ground and slinging their
bait out there might catch one.Places like the jetties, places like in

(01:18:42):
the like, maybe up into SanLouis Pass, a little bit along the
shoreline somewhere around there. You've gotto be careful down there because that water
will get away from you. Youknow, you don't want to get in
the water down there. But justthe places that you would go fish for
redfish are where they let those fishgo because they want somebody to catch them.
They do. How about Sergeant inthe Texas City Dyke, Yeah,

(01:19:05):
yeah, I would. I wouldnot be surprised to learn that the Texas
City Dyke had a few of thosetagged redfish let go close by. I
would not be surprised at somewhere downaround Sergeant down close to the river mouth
or something. I don't know where. I don't know. They don't tell
anybody where exactly they let them go. But once again, I mean they're

(01:19:26):
they're cutting them loose and hoping somebodycatches them where, you know, for
seventy dollars, you know you Yeah, yeah, if you've ever bought a
lottery ticket, you got a betterodds catching that red fish. Probably probably
do. But I know you upagainst it and you're getting ready for you
go. But I just need toYeah, see what you're looking for,

(01:19:47):
Sammy is an excuse to go fishingall summer. So there you got it
now, No, I already gotI don't need no excuse. I believe
in you know what defend of mineheat down there about to take a city
dight. Yeah. As a matterof fact, you know he do custom
raws. Did a custom raw nice? Okay, I mean they are frantastic

(01:20:10):
crow check in bottom. Okay.I don't know you, I don't know
if you're able to hear them.Andrew, Oh, Andrew the fantastic he
made several custom raws for me andthe outstanding that but most time he'll call
me and say, were l youknow, it's good to come down there.
So I was just curious, youknow, you know, not a

(01:20:30):
lot of money, but he isa lot of If you get a look
and catch the boat, trailer anduh yeah, where else you gonna buy
an F one fifty in a boatand a motor and a trailer for seventy
bucks and become a member of cc A. That's good, right,
all right? Andrew against audio?Right, all right? Yeah, yeah,

(01:20:50):
go fish where you fish. Ifyou if you fish from the bank
and you're pretty good at it andyou know what you're doing, and you've
caught some red fish where you go, they just may have let one go
there. They just may have.Speaking of another reminder that the tournament is
going on. It started on MemorialDay weekend. It started that Friday and

(01:21:13):
it goes all the way through LaborDay. And if you are registered,
which you have to be to bequalified for the prizes, you've got a
shot at winning either a great fishingprize like that boat, motor and trailer
and truck to pull it all with. For those tagged redfish or gift certificates
or any number of other fantastic thingsthat you can win through CCA's Star Tournament,

(01:21:35):
which has been around. I don'tknow how many exactly how many years
it's been around now, but it'sa bunch and every year it's gotten just
better and better and better. Goesall somewhere long. Like I said,
great prizes in seven divisions, gotscholarships for the kids, and they are
sponsored by Texas Ford Dealers, AcademySports and Outdoors, Progressive Insurance, Haney

(01:21:58):
Boats, Mercy Marine, Old WaterBoats, Mustang Cat, ABC thirteen,
all these different places, all thesedifferent entities backing this tournament because it supports
such a good cause, which isCCA. Go to sign well, to
sign up, go to Star Tournamentdot org. That's all you have to
do, but you gotta do itto be eligible to win these cool prizes.

(01:22:20):
Star Tournament dot Org. This isSportstock seven ninety, face foom dot
Com, Slash Sports Talk seven ninetyBack to the Doug Pipe Show. I
do have some golf I'll get to, but I want to get to John's
question because I bet it's one thata lot of people are asking what's up,
John? Hey Doug, how youdoing? And enjoy your show?

(01:22:41):
Thank you? Is that my cousin. I always get the license. I
mean, you know, as faras to say it signs up and I'm
yeah, to sign up, soI need to sign up. But you
know, I don't really think Iknow the rules as far as like,
once you do catch us, it'swhat do you do? And what's to
do with adulton and I listen?Okay, okay, yeah, that's cool,
thank you John. So the TaggedRedfish division is the one that that's

(01:23:06):
that's the big boy, Okay. That's where you can win for the top,
for the first not the top,but the for first five of the
specially tagged redfish that are caught bypeople who are in the tournament can win.
The first five get an f oneto fifty, a nice boat,
a nice motor, and a nicetrailer to win. And I'm reading right

(01:23:29):
from go to the The rules arepretty long, but the one that pertains
to this is they're not numbered.I guess it's number fifteen. Yeah.
In order for a tagged redfish tobe eligible at either the Red Tag or
Blue Tag division, the angler isnot allowed to retain the tagged redfish after

(01:23:51):
the In other words, you can'ttake it home and eat it. If
you do, you're gonna get disqualifiedafter the catch, because, after all,
CCA is a conservation organization. Theydon't care if you eat a couple
of keep a trout, they don'tcare if you eat another redfish. But
if you catch one of those tagredfish here it is. After the catch,
the angler or an assisting person mustclip, cut, brake, or

(01:24:14):
otherwise remove the visible portion of thetag above the fish's scales. TAG number
must be visible on the removed portionof the tag. Once the visible portion
of the tag has been removed, anglers are to release the fish as quickly
and as ethically as possible, regardlessof condition. If able, we ask

(01:24:35):
the angler to film and or photographthe release. The angler must present the
removed portion of the tag at anofficial CCA Star Texas way in station,
with the date and time of entryclearly marked on the official way in form.
Tag will be retained by waystation personnelon an on and on it goes.

(01:25:00):
But that's as pretty straight up andsimple as you can imagine. Now,
the Red Tag Division minimum of sixteenthred tagged redfish are gonna be released
or have been released. The tagsplaced on the redfish will read CCA Texas
Star and then they're the tag numbersare here. Only the first ten tags
entered in that division. We'll receivethat top prize. If the winner is

(01:25:26):
sixteen or younger when on the dayof the awards presentation, and as a
first through the fifth winner, thatcollege they get instead of the truck,
they get a scholarship, but theystill get the boat prize. In lieu
of the truck boat prize. Theyget a scholarship and a boat prize.
Still a pretty darn good incentive. So that's how all that's going on.

(01:25:48):
And now I got to squeeze inall this golf. Where oh where to
start? Okay, very quickly tothe Principal Charity Classic, which is where
this is the the Tour Champions bunch. Okay, the Tour Champions, Rod
Pampling and Ernie Els tied for first. Bernhard Longer, the Time Capsule,

(01:26:14):
the Living Time Machine. Just Pamplingand L's are at fourteen. Longer and
Steven Ames are at thirteen. DavidDuvall, who I'm so glad to see
back out playing golf again. Hewent through some really crazy, weird times.
He's been doing a lot of announcingand doing a very good job of
that. And I don't think anybodyunderstands better the ultimate highs and lows that

(01:26:40):
golf can either lift you up withor slap you in the face with.
He's one of them. Kevin Sutherlandand VJ. Singh at twelve, Chad
Campbell, Heath Slow them at eleven, and it goes on from there through
today's finished. We'll see who winsthat thing. I could. You can't
rule out anybody in the top fivepositions. That's Singh, Sutherland, duval

(01:27:04):
Aimes, Longer, El's and Pampling. Every one of them kind of got
credentials. Pretty darn good. Let'smove on, shallow. We PGA tours
up in Canada at the RBC McIntyrefourteen, Griffin and Hughes and Fox all
three at ten, Fleetwood, Burnsand Crow at nine, and it goes

(01:27:28):
on from there. I think Ijust read the winner's last name. I'm
not sure which of those seven guysit'll be. And then you go to
the US Women's Open, which alsois going on, presented by Ally up
there at Lancaster Country Club, veryfancy, fine place to play, a
beautiful, tough tournament. Actually thatthe scores had gotten a little bit better.

(01:27:50):
Minj Lee Andrea Lee and we chinymeech High all at five under par.
They go out later the Sava afternoon. Kano and Nako excuse me,
Nako Shibuno at three, Yukasaso attwo under par, and that's it,
just those five women under par.You got Jen he M and Sakura,

(01:28:15):
Cole White, Kole White. Yeah, I think it's kow Why at one
over par and then the list goesfrom there. But honestly, I think
those five who are under par noware going to enjoy staying in red numbers
today, and that's probably all it'sgonna take. Let me see if there's
any scores in early that would giveany indication of how hard the course is

(01:28:38):
playing. No, no, it'sstill not kicking off. There's only so
many people in the tournament, sothey're gonna wait a little bit later.
Golly, I hate that coming upthis week of this weekend anyway, the
coming weekend live Golf Houston out thereat Golf Club of Houston. Hope you
get a chance to go out there. I'm gonna. I've been a couple

(01:29:00):
of at least two trips out thereto really get a feel for it,
and I'm pretty enthusiastic. After ayear and a half ago, two years
ago, when all of this wasbrand new, kind of I had my
doubts, but from listening to PatrickReid in an interview we did from and
it was a big there. Idon't know half a dozen of us on

(01:29:21):
the call. I think it wasmedia folks from around here from listening to
him, from listening to the manI had on a couple of weeks ago,
and I can't honestly, I apologize, I can't remember the man's name,
but he was with Live Golf andfantastic explanation of how it all works,
why they do it the way theydo it. One of the things

(01:29:42):
I think that any of us asgolf fans will enjoy and appreciate is the
shotgun start. It's very non traditionalas professional golf goes, but what it
does for fans is give you achance to come out at one one time
and walk around and see everybody. If you can walk fast en up,

(01:30:05):
you can see everybody in the tournamentright then and there. As opposed to
having to show up for seven o'clocktea times and two o'clock tea Time's good,
heavens, it's already over. Ican't believe it. All right,
that's gonna wrap it up for thisweek's edition of the program. I do
appreciate it. By the way,if you can get to American Shooting Centers
you can do a little shooting outthere if you haven't lately. American Shooting

(01:30:28):
Centers on West Timber Parkway between Katieand Highway six. They've got it all.
They always have and they always will. Great place. American Shooting Centers
dot com. Go see them,we tell them. I said hello,
I'll be back Tuesday for fifty plus, and I will be back next Saturday,
God willing for I'm gonna be rightback here talking about fishing and golf

(01:30:48):
and all my fun favorite things todo. That's it. Stay safe,
get outside, for heaven's sakes,it's not raining right now. Audios
