(00:01):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by American Shooting Centers Guns
Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now here's Doug Pike. Ow What
a week it has been. Whata horrible, dreadful week it has been
(00:22):
for Melvin and me. Neither ofus has power yet, and neither of
us is terribly happy about it.And I just I can't ignore that giant
elephant in the room. I justread. I actually just read an email,
or not an email, but alittle post that somebody put on that
(00:42):
next door app saying that. AndI'm not one hundred percent sure it's true
because I haven't checked it out,but apparently Fort ben County wasn't included in
the FEMA money that's headed this way. And if that's the case, I'd
(01:02):
sure like to know why. Idon't know that I would qualify for anything
that's going to be made available tostorm victims. But if that's the case,
then somebody's really dropped the ball. That may be wrong, that may
be wrong. I know that ourstate and our president and FEMA are all
(01:22):
arguing about who said what when, and I wish they would just stop that
and get back to taking care ofus. That would be nice. The
frustration I have, I don't evenknow where to start. Honestly, five
days of just brutal, difficult, terrible times. And I'm thrilled for anybody
(01:46):
and everybody in this audience who haselectricity. I really am. I'm not
going to be one of those onesthat wishes everybody could just go back to
zero until we can all get fixed. But I did say yesterday, actually
on plus, this is how itshould work, Melvin, So we know
that Center Point is going to betaking care of everybody a little faster and
(02:07):
a little better. If you applyfor and accept, and apply for,
get and accept a position at centerPoint, not alignment, not anybody who's
out working on a truck, butsomebody who works in an air conditioned office.
If you are one of those people, you have to live on a
(02:30):
random grid where there is no hospital, there is no fire station, you
have to have no generator, youcan't own a generator, and there were
a couple of other qualifiers. Butyeah, let's let's just put everybody on
the on the same play and fieldas Melvin and me. We can't,
(02:54):
we can't, hey, hey,hey man, go fix this address.
That's my address, real quick. No, we can't do that. They
they don't need that put on themby all of us. But if the
if the most powerful people at thepower company didn't live where they're going to
(03:14):
get taken care of first, andI've actually heard stories that they've been taking
care of first kind of no matterwhere they live. I can't substantiate that,
but it would it would really disappointme if that's true. The bottom
line is this has gone on longenough. We're well. I didn't think
we were a third world country. And the the issue about them negotiating with
(03:38):
the California Union of Electricians or whoeverit was out in LA who sent a
bunch of trucks and people over heretrying to trying to wiggle the rate down
that they were going to be chargedCenter Point was going to be charged by
California. That's that's obscene. Thepeople should have been out there working.
(03:58):
I think I've heard stories that thatthey lost either a half a day or
a day, and I'm not sureany of that is true, so don't
hold me to it. But fromwhat I'm hearing, some of this could
have been handled better, and someof it could have been handled worse,
and we still for I don't knowhow many, hundreds of thousands of people.
It's a lot of people. Welive in a big city. The
numbers are going to be big.But you also, if you're in charge
(04:21):
of all this, should have thewherewithal to realize when you see that this
thing is indeed coming straight up thestreet, you kind of mobilize everything you
got and then worry about paying forit later. It's not like Center Points
broke. Believe me. They makebillions of dollars, billions of dollars,
(04:43):
and some of that needs to beinvested pretty quickly here. So I'll get
off my soapbox now. And I'mhey. Like I said, if you're
with power, more power to you. I'm happy for you. I really
am. I truly am, becausethe hell I'm going through with my family
right now, want to put anybodyelse through. It's ridiculous. Melvin's dealing
with the same stuff. Man.You guys getting along, okay, Melvin
(05:08):
surviving. We're doing pretty good.Oh hold on, I didn't have my
We're doing pretty good. We can'tcan't complain. We just I ain't fir
enough. The grill a lot.Let me, let me give you a
little tip. So it's hot inthe house right, trying to sleep its
miserable. A woman in my neighborhoodgrew up in Sudan, Okay, born
(05:30):
in Sudan, grew up in Sudan, and one of the things they did
in the evening is to keep cooler. And she swears she did it a
couple of nights ago and it workedlike a charm. Now, I don't
know how I don't know how oftenyou would have to change this. I
don't know how often. I don'tknow any details other than what I'm about
to tell you. She said thatif you dampen paper towels and just drape
them over each arm and just liedown like that, that will tremendously help
(05:56):
cool your body. Just damp papertowels. Wow, So take a swing
at that and let me know tomorrowmorning. I try to night myself.
Interesting, Yeah, And it makessense that the water is gonna not certainly
not gonna make you any hotter. And if there's any breeze on you at
all, I would I would imaginethat would pull the temperature down on your
(06:20):
arms. And if I tell youwhat, if you could put one across
your belly. When I was inbaseball, When I was playing baseball over
in South Alabama one hundred years ago, one of the tricks that we that
our trainer used to cool us downwhen we got overheated was to take an
ice back. And I'm not suggestingyou use any of the ice you're trying
(06:41):
to keep your food with, butmaybe just a couple of wet paper towels
in this case to bring everything downa little bit more slowly. And you're
lying there on your back anyway, with paper towels on your arms, but
they would put that ice bag betweenyour belly button and your groin because that's
where there's a ton of bloodbelt ussel'sgoing through there. There's a lot of
circulation moving through there, and justto cool your gut like that really brought
(07:05):
body temperature back down very quickly. So that's another way we might be able
to stay at least be temporarily cooled, not have to go to a cooling
station. That's this is the twentyfirst century and we're being told we have
to go somewhere other than our ownhome to cool off and not be beaten
(07:28):
up by this heat. I justwonder how many people who never mind,
I want to get out of this. I'm doing my best to be optimistic.
Really, the good news is thatthe work does continue for thousands of
linemen and electricians around town, allover this region, and hopefully my home
in yours. If you're also powerlesstoday or on the list for reconnection today,
(07:55):
let's get it fired up today.Let's all say prayer and see what
we can do. My home ison a grip that doesn't serve a whole
lot of homes and people, andthat's the problem. I think. I
just can't help but think that theCenterpoint's working hardest to restore the biggest grids
possible. That's where they get morebang for their buck in the pr world.
(08:15):
But those of us on these littlegrids just continue to suffer. They
hop over us to go get anotherbig one, and that's really frustrating.
That's really frustrating. I've heard thatthat's what's going on. It makes perfect
sense, because the last thing theyneed is somebody saying, well, why
did you only take care of thosefifty people when you could have taken care
of a thousand. Well, theywere next in line. We were on
(08:39):
We went from a Street to BStreet, and then C Street only has
a few people, so we justjumped over that and went to D and
E and F and G. Ifthat's true, then that's also something that
needs to be addressed. It shouldn'tmatter what size grid you're on it.
What should matter is getting the theequipment at leaving the equipment there, not
(09:01):
to take something off. If they'redriving trucks away from small grids to take
them to big grids, that's reallyirritating. If the if the manpower is
there and they move it without fixingwhat's broken, then that's a big problem.
Seven three two one two five sevenninety Email me Dug Pike at iHeartMedia
dot com. Gosh, I'm soI'm so frustrated and in sleep deprived.
(09:26):
That's the boy. That's a aplus situation for me right now. I
just can't get enough sleep, justcan't man all right, So moving on
back to the outdoors. I'll trynot to say much more about that today.
Back to the outdoors, since I'vealso arrived at the office to finally
fragmented internet and email service, letme see if my email's working stand by.
(09:50):
When I got in here, Iwasn't getting anything. Uh, okay,
I do have. I have agrand total of four that we're sent
today, one of them at sixtwenty four six, and then seven on
nine. That's when I have toaddress. Right, Well, let me
get Dave on the phone. Holdon, hey, Dave, what's up.
At least the equipment's working in here, that's good. What's up David?
(10:11):
Well, how you doing? Well? I'll tell you what. I'll
tell you what. Everything ain't workingaround here kind of sort of, you
know, I ain't got no lightsback yet like that. But but that's
okay. I got a buddy ofmine he lent me a generator. And
the only bad thing is you gotto get up in the middle of the
night and go get gas put itback in. Oh yeah, well,
(10:35):
they're only taking credit cards. Imean you can't use carry money, that's
right, Yeah, because they can'tprocess the cards. Oh my gosh.
Now anyway, but it's dangerous cityaround here right now. I'll tell you
what. You got to keep aneye out for everything and look out on
what's happening, especially at the redlights and the stop signs. I don't
(10:58):
know where these people mean to gotech drivers in Yeah, I'll tell you
what when I was driving in thismorning pitch dark, okay, pitch dark,
and I'm driving the same road thatI drove for the last two or
three days to get here, andalmost blew through a light because there you
can't even see the light. Fixyou can't see. You just don't even
(11:18):
realize you're coming up to an intersection. Almost. Yeah, it's scary,
man, hey, But the thingis, you know, like me,
knowing the neighborhood, you're right behind, you know, a forty five a
park road even though it is pitchdark, I kind of know. But
then you've got to put your brightson, but then you got to turn
them down and all that kind ofstuff. It's a mess. But you
(11:39):
know, now I'm in, I'mhoping. Uh I want to go fishing.
Yeah, me too. I wantto do something normal. It's raining
right now here. It's sprinkling alittle bit. Yeah, not bad.
No, that's not the world. You got crawfish pottle. Yeah, I
(12:00):
got a big backyard. Man.Oh, it's his pond down all fishmais.
Yeah. Well the gold Hill golfCourse, you know, it's up
on a hill over there, soI got to get it. When you
eat it off and everything like that. But I got that old. I
lost two big giant trees filled frommy neighbor's yard over here. Oh no,
(12:20):
I talked to my landlord and everything, but I mean, it's too
muddy guy out here to do anythingright now. Yeah, I had a
friend of mine sent me a pictureyesterday of a house. His house had
a pine tree, and I mean, like a huge sixty seventy foot pine
tree fall out of the neighbor's yard. And it didn't fall. It snapped,
Okay, it snapped kind of high. So the whole bunch of branches
(12:43):
came down. One of the brancheswent through his roof into his den,
one went through the roof into oneof his daughter's rooms. And I mean,
it just it just ripped that poorhouseup. Man. Hey, when
I was when I was working, you know, at Merrick Brothers, back
when I was young, I gotup and I went to the office,
man, and it was already floodedover there, but I was going down
(13:05):
forty third and everything was clear. And then when I started coming back,
they said, no, go backhome. And then I come back to
Shepherd over there and over there, and man, there were so many pine
trees laid down on the road acrossfour lanes. I had to drive up
in somebody's yard. And then whenI got that shepherd plywood flying in front
(13:28):
of me in my land. Yeah. Then when I got back to the
house, I went around there ina thirty foot of picon tree fell on
my cousin's house over there. SoI went around and checked on them,
and they were doing good. Youknow, everybody was still that's a mess.
Hey, Andy, I tell youwhat we're kind of I ain't seen
(13:52):
one of these and something like thatis what I'm trying to say. I'm
my god, dang, Yeah, that's a pretty bad situation. We'll get
there though. Let me go aheadand here's the real quick help you help
your neighbor. Yeah, yeah,I did a bunch of that that say
that first day Monday, when onceeverything kind of settled out and it got
safety go outside. Uh, peoplestarted popping out all over the street.
(14:16):
And there was one guy. WellI'll tell you about that. I got
to get this break, but I'lltell you about that guy in the neighborhood
when we get back. That reallyimpressed me. And you get the help
back, I hear you. Good. Thanks Dave. I said, man,
okay, I got to move thisso I can do this. I
got him, I got him.Oh, you've got him already. Thank
you, Melvin. I appreciate thatyour Rockets and Astros live here. We
(14:37):
are Sports Talk seven ninety. Theconversation continues this as the Doug Pike Show.
Welcome back Doug Pike Show on SportsTalk seven ninety. Thank you for
joining us this morning on this well, I don't even know what to call
this day. I tell you,let me get my We got to get
my inbox back together. Another fromfrom Billy, I keep seeing tons of
(15:01):
crews staged all over the place. So I finally got the courage to ask
one of those crews about sixteen trucksin a small parking lot. Why do
I keep seeing this everywhere? Theytold me they're still waiting for Center Point
to tell them where to go.This was eleven thirty am yesterday. I
asked, as this waiting since youfinished early, and they replied, we've
(15:26):
been here as our own hub sinceseven thirty this morning. So they sat
in one spot for four hours doingnothing because they'd been given no instructions.
Oh mercy, yeah, that isan issue. And Billy continues, by
the way, we two have thatall green power is good color over our
(15:48):
area. And I still believe it'sto keep things looking progressive and keep the
bad publicity at Bay. Says Billy. Yeah. That The thing that really
I think disappointed me the most wasthe text message I got maybe two days
ago, power at your residence. You know, it's power at your address
(16:12):
has been restored. Like, ohhallelujah, here we go. And the
more I tell people about that, the more they tell me, yeah,
we got that same text message. And the kicker what happened is that it
says on or near at or nearyour address. Well, it was near
(16:32):
my address. Yeah. The peopleacross the street have power, the people
in all directions around my little little, tiny little grid have power, but
we don't. And I'm beginning tofeel like we've been forgotten. And it's
going to be my personal mission betweennow and the next door and make sure
(16:53):
that they they don't do that tous again. That's totally it's just unnecessary
and unfair. Work down the streetand then cross the street and work back
up the street. But don't don'tplug in everybody but a few people,
because those few people. I've gotneighbors in my neighborhood. There's a couple,
(17:15):
an elderly couple, both of whomare stroke victims. They have no
power, and they have no familyin town, they have nowhere to go,
and they're just they're just melting. They're just melting. And I just
pray that that it doesn't get worse. But the way this is dragging on
and the time it's taking, Iwon't be surprised. I'll be sadly stunned
(17:38):
and shocked. Well, no,I wouldn't be stunned either. I'll just
be horribly sad if people start dyingfrom the heat because Center Point can't get
it back together, back to theoutdoors, we will trod. Let's do
that. My goodness, I hateto do it. I just I hate
talking about this, but it's inmy world right now. That's it.
(17:59):
I can't I tell you I caughta bass this week. I can't tell
you I played golf this week becauseI didn't. I've been focused on keeping
my family safe and comfortable, andfocused on coming in here and trying to
get my work done the best Ican. Oh. I'd love to hear
from pretty much any and all ofyou who want to talk about this is
(18:19):
a great opportunity because I wasn't ableto do a lot of prep this week.
This was a totally virtually a lostweek. Okay in my brain.
Now I came down here, Igot stuff done. I got all my
fifty plus shows done. But justoverall it's been really hard. Hold on,
(18:40):
let me go talk to brand andsee what's on his mind. TikTok,
TikTok, TikTok. If I getthis mouth famm, there we go.
Brandon, what's up, buddy?Good morning, mister pied Carr.
Y'all this morning, well probably aboutthe same as you. I guess you
with or without power, right,Well, that's I've got power. I
mean, man, I'm not well. I'm not wanting to break. But
I come all these guys out herethat are in the country, and I
(19:04):
mean there are guys and gals thatare working on the ground, but they
take their orders, especially the contractors. They're taking it from above. These
people care no good. I knowthe people out their care I no question,
yes, right exactly. But mynext thing is, I don't want
(19:26):
to get too political, but wegot to have a change. Yeah,
And I'm not talking about the stateof Texas. I mean Dan Patrick and
Abbat or the great people. Imean, they're great Christian people. They
care, they care, but weneed something on the federal level that actually
care about this country. And Ihonestly have to say, there is a
(19:48):
guy that's out there running that's beenpersecuted, that actually cares about this country.
Good point. But if we keepcontinually going down this down here slow,
we're in trouble eat trouble. Yeah. Yeah, I don't want to
get too deep into it, butI'm I'm standing there beside you. This
(20:08):
has got to stop. It's justgot to stop, right, yes,
sir, And you're allowed it toWell, what's happened is we've allowed it
to go on too long and somesome especially younger people, are just they
don't know any different. This isjust this is their normal, so they
don't really know that it used tobe different. And right, turn them
(20:30):
around, don't worry, We gotthem right. And the other thing is,
I think they underestimated this storm becauseI wrote it out and I used
to live thirty miles above Corpus Christieand I've I've ridden some things, but
nothing like nothing like this. Ithink they very underestimated what was going to
happen. Oh, no doubt,no doubt. That's why there wasn't nearly
(20:52):
enough resource here when it when itwent down. All right, that's what
that's what makes me mad, isthey they should have had people in position,
whether it pans out or not.Yeah, should have people here and
say, Okay, it was notas bad as I thought, or it's
worse. You still have to happen. Better to have them and not need
them, right, all right,I gotta run, man, I gotta
(21:14):
go catch a couple more. ThanksBrandon, Sorry about that. Sorry,
audios, go there, go here, David, what's up? Man?
Yeah, real quickly, I'm nottelling you something you already know. Wildlife,
Man, I saw a dough,Uh, so on hadn't passed.
I went out, decided to checkon things real quickly, saw a dough
running across the road. Man,you could tell she was scared a fact,
(21:37):
didn't know what was going on.Yeah, that's a that's a totally
total disruption of their lives as well. But anyway, but yeah, and
the what surprise you off the storeand Doug was the satellite? Not satellite
satellite, I'm say I'm slumming.I'm slumming. I've got a gasoline generator,
okay, but satellite is phenomenal.I mean, those birds they don't
(21:59):
know there's a hurricane. And aslong as you've got backup, Paler,
you've got service, the tell phonesand the internet providers. No, those
networks are not near as resilient asyou said, as they used to be,
as they used to be. Youget all right? Yeah, I
appreciate that. Thanks. It's greatto hear from you. I'll see David,
(22:22):
all right, skate. Let mecatch Skeeter. What's up, Skeeter?
Man. You know, I don'tknow if you should tell everybody what
I do or not. People.Yeah, well, yes, geter Braun
Braun's roofy here here and at theoffice, and everybody goes, what are
you doing? I said, man, I'm looking for a new deer least
you know, gosh, Lord,I goes, I'd be buying one.
(22:44):
I wouldn't be worried about lethan one. So anyway, you know, it's
kind of interesting. I have abunch of trees in my backyard and these
little old squirrels they don't have noplace to go, and made a little
box for him and they come inthere. It's kind of sad. The
wildlife, it gets kind of displaced, no doubt. With a storm like
this, you know, it reallyis kind of sad. And you know,
(23:06):
with all due respect being in theroofing industry, and I can't get
to everybody right away, but man, if you go right down here by
Hobby Airport, there's a home depotand I swear to god, there's three
hundred damn trucks from Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, sure you know South Carolina
there and they ain't working, andthose guys are standing around, know what,
it's all due respect. I don'tthink they're on breaks something. Yeah,
(23:30):
Center Point isn't upholding their their responsibilityand somebody has the break. Somebody
has put the brakes on them andare holding them back. You know that
the California thing was about negotiating abetter rate with the union. Really,
come on, get these people onthe ground, let them go to work.
That should be I should be alreadypreset. I thought it was a
(23:52):
good old boys system where hey,you send me some cruise when I have
a problem, and I'll send youmy cruise when you have your problem.
What the hell is going on aroundhere? You know, I don't know.
It's affecting a lot of people,it really is. And in the
city. Hey, by the way, I passed your contact info to another
guy. I'll brief you Awn anylater. You got it, I'll see
(24:15):
men bubbe. You know that. That's something that really bugs me is these
these crews are here, and itreally irks me in daylight hours to see
any one of those trucks just sittingin a parking lot anywhere there's work to
be done. I'll give them myaddress. If they're just sitting around with
(24:36):
nothing to do, we'll give themmy address in Melvin's address, and let's
say, hey, go take careof these two houses. And it shouldn't
be that hard. They know everytime, every time the wind blows wrong
and your power goes out, whathappens You get a text message from Centerpoint
to let you know that they knowyou don't have power right down to your
(24:59):
house, and so they know exactlywhere the problems are. They know exactly
what's going on. I'm getting allworked up again. Oh well, that's
that assessment part. That's the assessmentthey've been doing for the last three or
four days and talk. This issomething else that I was at a friend's
(25:22):
house last night and they talk aboutcenter points, bragging about how many hundreds
of miles their technicians have walked andtheir surveyors have walked assessing the damage.
Hello, what about a drone? Are they ever going to come into the
twenty first century? Every industry, the roofing industry, the real estate industry,
(25:45):
all of these things that count onseeing what's going on from the top.
How about just put a few dronesup at night and send trucks to
the dark parts. That's not thathard man, that makes sense, you
know. Yeah, drone, Adrone can cover, You could cover for
one person, could cover one hundredmiles in a day. But they were
bragging about how their people had walkedall these lines. And I'm sure there's
(26:07):
some stuff on the ground. Ifif you've got trees covering stuff up,
well, you can still to sendthe drone down there and get a bird's
eye, just a straight up,front end view of it. Maybe something
that's damaged underground has to be assessed. But they know where the power stops,
so they know how to fix that. Yeah, that's that's something's something's
(26:29):
a miss. Something is a miss, and it's it's really becoming a point
of contention. We're a huge citythat has basically one provider, and that
one provider has been exposed, Ithink, and it's driving me nuts.
Seven one three two one two fiveseven ninety. Email me Doug Pike at
iHeartMedia dot com. Let's try toget off of this, oh, this
(26:52):
horrible train we're on right now.Okay, let's let's try to go to
the outdoors, and when we getback, I'll kind of give you the
theme I was thinking about that mighthelp us today. Your Rockets and Astros
live here. We are Sports Talkseven ninety. The conversation continues this as
the Doug Pike Show. All right, welcome back and Doug Pike Show this
(27:12):
Saturday morning. Five days into darknessfor me now, and I'm just about
sick and tired of it. Imust say, just about sick and tired
of it. Seven on seven ninety. Email me Doug Pick at iHeartMedia dot
com. I have kind of fragmentedaccess to all the the things we thought
(27:34):
were we thought were easy items,we thought we'd never lose. That's an
interesting thing I'll get to in aminute. Let me get to George,
see what's up. We'll find thisover here. There we go, George,
what's up? My friend? Hey, Doug, sorry to hear about
your present predicament. Well with others. At some points up it'll be our
(28:00):
turn at some point, I guessright. Well, you know, if
you look at the past a fewyears, the government ain't going to take
care of us, Doug. Wehave to take care of each other.
Yep, not this government, that'sfor sure. And well, and see
that's a problem that people might needto look dig a little deeper on.
(28:22):
It's like George Santayana said, thehis history is a pack of lies about
events that never happened to my peoplewho weren't there. And I know a
lot of history that I'm not goingto go into because I don't want to
blow this thing up, you know, I want to focus on you know.
You know, I'm lucky. Ilost all my skirting on my home,
you know, just like I didthree years ago from another storm that
(28:45):
was we had a down burst, and you know, I took out a
big portrait of it and I replacedit all. And now this one was
even worse. On this new skirtand put in and and then some of
our loss of shams and I hadto get out in the eye. I
was very fortunate we had the eyego right over us here. And because
it's here, Yeah, because youlive in Fort ben County like me,
(29:06):
and we there was a facial boardthat came off my home and I had
to get out there put that in. Because if you don't, you get
water getting wind blown into your ceiling, and you start getting water in your
ceiling, you got major problems toserve you going to occur. You know.
See, I'm electrician and I workedin the building trade for forty five
years and I'm retired now but thankfully. But but you know, and I
(29:27):
had a generator and I got anr V here because I've been you know,
I keep my ear to the ground, sure and then I'll see what's
been happening. And uh, anyway, just uh, you know, I
can't there's nothing I can say thatto a sewage un except that we need
to uh prepare better. Why dowe not have you know, we had
(29:51):
that that exit that debacle during HurricaneKate Rita. Yeah, Uh that was
twenty years ago, nearly Doug. Why did not we not have have backup
generators at different gas stations all aroundtown. You got to keep your generators
going and so people can get theircars. You've got the major debacles.
People can't get around. They can'tthey got to get food and water.
(30:12):
They're losing their food and their refrigerators. Why don't we have Why don't we
have more areas set up for districtfood distribution and everything. I mean,
we ought to have been able tozip over quickly, more quickly. You
know. We learned to have theincome bound lanes used for egress. We
learned that from Rita. We useand I think we use that during ike
(30:33):
that that's like the only thing Ican receive from that, you know.
So you know, I'm sorry,Doug. I feel for everybody. Say,
you know, we'll get out ofthis, but we're gonna have to
do it by helping each other.God and go look into your history,
because we're gonna get a big historylisten in this nation in the next year,
in the next two to three years. And I know a lot about
(30:56):
it because it all it's over andwe're gonna have to start over and put
the public back in republic. Yeah, I got you. Thank you.
George, I appreciate it. I'msorry. Okay, no, no,
that's all right. Yeah, alittle ben going on there, Baby,
I don't yeah, I don't mind. That's what's on everybody's mind. What's
up, Greg Burloger, Hey,Doug. I apologize for the informality here,
(31:18):
but I sent you a text andwhen I heard that you were out
of power, A lot of usare out of internet too. Bell Bill's
offering a special I just talked aboutthat. You tuned in forty seconds too
late. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I actually just for almost verbatim
read your text message, because yeah, that's what's stuff to know. Yeah,
(31:41):
you got stuff in a neighbors freezer. You got stuff in your own
freezer with your generator limping along, maybe keeping it cold, maybe not.
Just pile it all into the minivanand take it out to Bellville dollar off.
Yeah, and PAMs and roast andthings like that that you were saving
them, Like, well, youknow, is that the only reason why
you're running that generator is to keepall that stuff gold? You know,
(32:05):
Sure, it's got to get it'sgot to get thought out to made into
sausage. Just put it and putit in the cooler. And take it
out there, and uh, Ithought that was a great special Yeah,
so it's really good idea too.Yeah, maybe they'll hold on to it
for a little while till the guyswhoever takes it out there's freezer's come back
on too. Yep, are youand the family all right? Well,
(32:25):
it's hard to communicate with all ofthis no internet and everything. It depends
on how you define all right. You know, I'm I'm out of I
have no electricity at the house still, and there's everybody around me has it
even up to an including right acrossthe street. I can throw a rock
through a window of a house withelectricity, but I can't have it.
(32:46):
I don't have it in my houseyet. And I've got one guy trust
I'm waiting for his text message, and that's the only one I'm gonna trust.
I don't trust anything Centerpoint sends meright now. Well you you you
there were ten major transmission lines. Those are like pipelines that control the city
all of all the tree hunters whofought the building of any new power plant
(33:08):
for the last thirty years. Yeah, the electric grid, the electric grid
runs it about ninety eight percent ofits capacity, which doesn't leave. I
mean, we don't run our carsat ninety eight percent or capacity or any
machine that breaks down. So whatthe electric utilities have had to do is
they've built these transmission lines to shippower from one part of the country to
(33:31):
the other. When there's a spike, ten of those major transmission lines that
feed Houston all went down because thiswas primarily a wind event instead of a
water event, and so that willrestore whole neighborhoods at a time. And
then then you get into transformers thatall of a sudden you hit it with
(33:53):
a full load when powers are stored, and they pop, and some of
those are million dollars answers. Oh, they don't keep those on the shelf.
You know. Those take a whileto get And then eventually you get
down to like in my neighborhood. You've been here. Half of our neighborhood
is served with underground utilities and theother half has power poles in the areial.
(34:17):
Wow, that half of the neighborhoodstill down. I've got underground and
I'm still down. That's what's tickingme off. They just need to come
change a box. Hey, I'mrunning really late for a break. Greg
I gotta run, no worries, all right, man, thank you here,
y'all are okay? Well yeah,we'll get through a bite, all
right, man, see you allright, let's take this break. Brian,
if you'll hang on, go geta cup of coffee or go whatever
(34:39):
you want to do for a coupleof minutes. And as soon as we
get back, I will come straightto you. I promise, Rockets and
Astros live here. We are SportsTalk seven ninety. The conversation continues this
as the Doug Pike Show. Allright, welcome back. You know what
(35:00):
I see a Gug Pike show onSports Talk seven ninety. Forgive us for
occasionally dabbling in utility service since well, frankly, since I and my compatriot
over there in Meloyne are still out. I promised I'm gonna go back to
Brian first, and that's what I'mgonna do right now. Hey, Brian,
(35:21):
what's up? Man? Uh?Oh, hey, he didn't come
through. Oh wait wait oh yeah, I had him there we go,
got you now, Brian, what'sup, buddy? Hey Brian, Hey
Brian, he may have stepped awayfor a second. Come in, Brian,
Come on, man, come on, I know you can do it.
(35:44):
He may have stepped away from thephone. He's been holding so long.
He might be running back through thehouse trying to get here. There
is that him? No, oh, you took him. Put him back
on hold, Brian, you therenow? Oh God, blessing me.
Stayed on for so long, holdingon. I'm thinking it's the equipment because
we have an issues. Oh arewe few little issues? Oh? Lovely,
that's just fantastic. Melvin. Okay, I'm gonna put him back on
(36:07):
hold. Billy if man, ifyou're there, stay there, buddy,
and we'll we'll find a way toget you back up. Can you talk
to him. I'll go straight.I know who this is. I'll go
straight to him. Hey, Robert, what's up man? Hey, good
morning, buddy. I've just wantedto uh talking man. It was good
to hear you guys back on theradio this morning. Thank you appreciate it
(36:29):
and and uh yeah, so we'rehanging in there. I hope you guys
get power back soon. I justgot mine on last night. Brother.
Okay, yeah, they're they're withat some point. At some point.
I'm not ready to make the betyet that Melvin and I will be the
absolute last two and get our powerback in in October. But I'm getting
(36:52):
about sick and tired of this, buddy. All right, man, I
tell you daycare. Man, how'syour peer? Well wait, we did
the same. It's the same,A little bit of damage to the head
on the left side, but isstill intact. Okay, so I can
I can at least walk out thereand wet a line if and when I'm
ready to go. Man, thatwater is so dark. I mean,
(37:13):
it's just it looks like it lookslike a tar kid out there that's kind
of stuck. Yeah, yeah, definitely, but uh, you know,
we got the power back one stepat a time, man. Yeah.
A lot of people down on theisland that don't have power. Oh we're
just yeah, we're just trying toget get to reach day as we can.
(37:34):
But uh yeah, man, youguys take care and thank you.
Hey go astros. Yeah, I'lltake day if I can find a place
to watch them play, all right, man, Thanks thanks for Robert.
I'll see you, buddy, Audios. All right, I'm gonna try him
again. You there, Brian,Hey, Doug, Thank goodness. Year.
I thought, man, you waitedso long and so patiently I'm doing
(37:55):
well. I'm doing as ken beexpected for being out of power for five
days. I hear you, Ihear you going to brind them to help
my folks out a little bit.But that wasn't ch'all's gear problem. I
got a new truck, and whenI stopped to get gas and got back
in and connected to my truck,Oh yeah, not enough to figure that
move out yet. Hey. Istill get a problem when when I take
(38:17):
a I'm looking at a website orsomething and I get a call and the
guy says, hey, can youdo something for me on the phone,
and something I have to do onmy phone. If I go to another
screen, then I have a reallyhard time getting back to the call.
It draws me crazy. Yes,started showing my age a little. I
got access to a few pins upin the Brenham area in there, and
(38:42):
my rout rod and my red rodsare just a little stout for you know,
the perching I want to do,and I was thinking about I'd like
to pick up uh fly fishing,But I know I know absolutely nothing about
it. What you know, Iwas looking at way to rods and all
of that, so I need alittle general information on. If I'm a
(39:04):
fly fish with you know, fora brim and stuff like that, work
all right, guide me or yeah, I would highly recommend uh, if
you can, if you have timeand whatnot, before you get super serious
about it, get a lesson fromsomebody, and then once you've gotten a
lesson, you'll realize that you can't. As a guys tend to want to
overpower the equipment. The fly rodis designed to do most of the work
(39:29):
for you. When you when youpull back on that on that fly rod,
it loads really strongly and the lineflips behind you, and then you
pause and let that rod start toload up again, and then you just,
especially for brim fishing and whatnot, very gently pushed back forward. Any
instructor worth his salt can teach youthis in thirty minutes. Okay, As
(39:53):
far as the equipment goes, thenew equipment that's out there now is very
very effective, and you don't haveto spend even entry level gear now is
better than what the finest stuff wasfifteen twenty years ago. So you don't
have to go out and spend onethousand dollars on a rod and one thousand
(40:13):
dollars on a reel, find someplacewhere you can get just a beginner's entry
level fly fishing kit, and thenbuy yourself some little rubber spiders, buy
yourself some little rubber ants. Theseare all very tiny little things, but
that's what those fish eat. Andyou have to use a leader. I'd
go ahead, and unless you justenjoy tying knotts, go ahead and get
(40:37):
some pre made leaders. There'll beabout eight or nine feet long and they
will taper down. And I'd startwith I don't just something very light,
you know, very light, becauseyou're gonna have to be threading that line
through really tiny eye hook eyes. And then just get out there and just
try to get online. Really youcan learn a ton online. Do that,
(40:57):
especially for the casting, just inyour in your eyes, and then
take it outside and try and practiceacross the backyard. And to simulate a
fly, you just tie a littlepiece of yarn to the end of that
line and uh and the end ofthat leader, and it'll it'll react like
a fly reacts in the air. You'll see it. That sounds good.
What are they referring to when they'retalking about weight? The weight is the
(41:19):
heaviness of the rod. And soyou can push, you can catch bigger
fish and all your what you're lookingfor is like maybe a four weight to
a six weight, nothing bigger thana six. A six you could do
a little bass fishing with, butbut not for big fish. And then
a four you could take all theway into the mountains to catch a little
brick trout and stuff. Oh that'sfantastic. Yeah, that's what you need.
(41:42):
Four yeaut But I just want toI got time now with no power
to look at other things. Thereyou go, all right, man,
Thanks, I got a run,Yes, sir, I'm glad you held
on. Thanks Bert, All right, let me click that off. Let's
go straight to the break and thenI will double up at the nation.
How's that. We'll take a littlebreak here. We'll be right back.
(42:04):
The Doug Pike Show on Sports Talkseven ninety. This is the Doug Pike
Show, brought to you by AmericanShooting Centers Guns Shooting at Instruction since nineteen
eighty nine. Now here's Doug Pike. All right at oh three, it
is almost aato four on Sports Talkseven ninety. I appreciate all of you
(42:25):
listening this morning, trying to findways. Hmmm, I got a lot
of things I want to talk about, and we're gonna move. Let's go
to Well. I'll tell you what. Yeah, I got a phone call
I need to take here, beenhanging on for a couple of minutes.
Captain Mike, what's up, buddy? Hey, good morning. What I'm
just gonna talk to you. Wehad a good blow. But there's some
bait camps, you know, stillsurviving, and a lot of them got
(42:47):
a lot of damage. Now.The one in Baytown is Thompson's. He
rebuilt and he's got it open andhe's got some live trip excellent, anybody
Wilson and also Sibling Beach is closed. Okay. There is a called Moses
Lake Marina. He's got live baitand his boat ramps. Good. Moses
(43:07):
Lake is holding some fish, alsobait and tackle, and galvenged somebody.
The causeway I put in there probablyninety percent of the time, is completely
totaled and they've been trying to putit back together. But it's a long
long time. It's gonna take hima while. Yeah, by West Bay
is holding some fish. Now.The only place ring to put in on
(43:29):
that side would be sixty first Street. There's a boat well right there.
I don't know if you're familiar withit. I'm not. I'm not just
a great boat remp They got itpaved. There's great park and the only
problem is no place to clean fish. But that's no problem. You know,
when I go to Sabina, there'sno place. I just pull my
boat up on it and I justclean them. Yeah, I'll bring a
table, and that is some freshwater. But that's a good spot to
(43:52):
put in there because office by youand hose fish year round, no doubt.
It's a quick run out to thecauseway or it's run out to West
Bay. Now. They are catchingsome good fish out there. A lot
of people are using live strip andsome croakers right now and they are catching
them on lures. And there isanother place on the other side out of
Hitchcock called Waterman. They're ramps openand they've got baked, so there is
(44:16):
some opportunity. I know. Everybody'strying to get their stuff back together,
and and my prayers go out tothe city of Houston and everybody that's got
damaged and no lights. Yeah,I know, and we survived it quite
well. You know. I've gotgenerators and stuff. And as a matter
of fact, I got a triptomorrow. I got a couple of guys
going out. We're gonna we're gonnago throw some lures in that we're gonna
(44:37):
go out of Moses Lake and wemight run out to a Lea's and maybe
run up to Galveston and all Iwas gonna say the Galveston, not Gallen
with Texas City dyke is. Idon't know if it's open this morning or
not, but it's been closed forthe last few days, trying to get
the debris off of it. Sothat's you know, and Boys, I
(44:58):
think Boys one Stop have some bait. But anyway, that's kind of the
area I was going to just talkabout. I know there's a lot going
on. Everybody's talking to you abouttheir problems, and everybody's got it,
but I just want to let youknow. And uh, and I left
your text still on your Facebook. We're gonna reschedule our little get together and
have a good time. I'd loveto do that, honestly, and I'm
(45:19):
kind of glad we kind of scheduledit kind of uh you know, didn't
see this last Monday. Yeah, that probably would have been a bad decision,
wouldn't it. I think the boatcould have handled that. But now
I appreciate your show. You're doinggreat for the listeners, and it's a
great show. And you know,I don't call in that much, but
you know I still listen at anytime. Fish. But if we had
(45:40):
fish last Monday, the only waythe boat could handle is if we just
fished up with it still tied tothe trailer. Just back it up,
back it up close to the backit up close to the water, and
just sit in it. And yeah, that's probably the only way to do
it. Well, look, I'mgonna let you back to the show,
but I won't let everybody know I'mout here. And they want my phone
(46:01):
number, I can give it tothem. Yeah, go ahead and go
out still. Yeah it's two eightone five o seven one nine three three.
And then the week of the twentysecond, I'm gonna be out for
a week because we're going to SouthPadre fishing and a hard guy down Oh.
I hate to say that to you, but when I go fishing,
when I go with vacation, Igo, I go fishing somewhere is the
(46:22):
South Padres with you, you know, But I would be down there in
a couple of weeks. I'll letyou know how that trip turns. Yeah,
please do, please do, becauseyou and you know that your friend
has a chance. We'll work somethingout because you take there. I'm enjoying
my show, and everybody be safeout there. Thanks man, I'll see
you. Captain Mike Catchiatti great guy, great guy, and one of the
(46:44):
things I like about him, andI don't know of anybody else who does
this, If you honestly are anewcomer to salt water fishing, he discounts
that trip significantly because he knows thatonce you get out there, and once
you catch some of these saltwater fish, you'll be hooked. As the adage
(47:04):
a little old old old saying goes, he's really good with kids. He's
really good with newcomers of any ageactually, and he'll make darn sure you
guys have a good time. Ipromise Mike Katchiotti you can find him online.
Spell it like you'd just just goshift your gear, get shift your
brain into Italian mode, and spellit like you would spell Catciotti if you
(47:28):
were Italian, and that should getyou there. Great guy, and that
again, that discount for newcomers tosalt water he doesn't. He doesn't care
if you want to throw lures orbait or whatever. He'll do whatever you
want to do, and you're gonnafish for whatever is going to be the
best bite that day. He hewould rather see that rod bent over and
(47:50):
hear that line kind of sliding offwith a big fish pulling drag than worry
about trying to catch one or twotrophy fishing a day, which is I'm
kind of down to the trophy sidemyself. But when you put kids on
a boat, or you put newcomerson a boat, you want to get
them some action. That's what they'relooking for. They want to feel that
fish pulling, and Mike's pretty goodat that. Seven one three two one
(48:13):
two five seven ninety Email me Dougpikeat iHeartMedia dot Com. I am still
you know, I'm doing my bestto be optimistic. Like I said a
little bit while a little while ago. Uh by the way, last night,
I had Here's what I wanted totalk about. I finally getting to
it at eight ten this morning. What I wanted to do for you because
(48:34):
with you, because I did thislast night at dinner. I had dinner
with my my host where I'm stayingwith my wife and with John McClain,
the old football writer from from theChronicle. He and I and my host,
and I'm sworn to secrecy. Icannot tell anybody where I am.
I'm not going to because see,he was very kind and generous to squeeze
(49:00):
me in when it was close tofull. The bottom line is we had
a wonderful conversation, a lot aboutfootball, as you might imagine, sitting
there talking with him, and Ilearned, actually, boy, did I
learn a lot about what's going onin the football world in Houston, just
sitting and listen to the two ofthem talk. And then the conversation shifted
(49:22):
to the outdoors and we started talkingabout fishing. We started talking about hunting
and shooting sports, and one thingled to another, and I was asked,
if you had six or eight weeksto go focus on one specific species
of fish or big game or whatever, hunting trip, fishing trip. Mostly
(49:45):
between the two of us, itwas fishing stuff. But if you had
just that much time to go reallydevote without any consequences professionally or to your
family anything, you can bring yourwhole family whatever you want. What would
you go chase. Where would yougo anywhere in the world. It could
be domestic, it'd be right downthere Galveston, if there's something you truly
(50:07):
love doing down there, or itcould be over at Christmas Island, chasing
Permit and Giant Travalley. Whatever youwant to do. And we had a
couple of good, good, interestingthings came up. Really, I thought
I leaned. First of all,I qualified it by saying, there's not
a chance that I can come upwith just one thing I would like to
(50:29):
do. I could see spending severalweeks chasing Giant Travalley and Christmas Island in
the Christmas Island chain, I couldsee. I could see chasing stripe marlin
on the west coast of Mexico, because the stripe marlin is not the biggest
member of the family, but it'sstill a significant fish over there. And
(50:50):
the stripe marlin and the salefish overthere on the West coast average one hundred
and twenty to one hundred and fiftyhundred and eighty pounds. The stripe marlin
get a little bit bigger than thesailfish, but both of them are pretty
big. And what's fun about themis that while they are significantly large billfish,
and bearing in mind that there isa chance you might hook a three
(51:15):
or four or five hundred pound bluemarlin while you're there too. The stripe
he's in the sailfish are fairly easyto get to the boat, get released,
and then you start fishing again. You start waiting for that big strike
again. Then we got into tarpinand different places to go catch tarpin.
(51:35):
My host had been to a coupleof places I haven't been in Central America,
and I had been to a coupleof places he hadn't been. And
we had at least one one lodgedown there in common, and we both
kind of like Central America for tarpinfishing. He made a really remote trip
one time that I haven't been quitethat remote, but it was interesting and
(52:00):
how the guy got them where theywent and how unsettled he felt a couple
of times along that trip. I'mso glad he made it back because he's
a really good guy. But wetalked about that, I talked about snuk
being on my list. I couldjust I'd be satisfied chasing snook for several
weeks. I love those fish. They strike like a freight train. They
(52:22):
jump like a bass, and theytaste really really good, and they get
big too. A snook is probablyone of my favorite fish all time to
catch. They really are. I'vecaught big stripe bass up in Chesapeake Bay.
I've caught stripe bass on flies inthe Kennebec River in Maine, big
(52:44):
stripe bass, but snuk get asbig as those big stripers, and they're
probably three or four times as strong. I would I would guess that's a
great bite. M South Texas,I could. I could spend a lot
of time in South Texas. Thesnook fishery is it's such that you can
really they They've had several good yearsweatherwise that have prevented any kind of a
(53:09):
real major hiccup for the snook population. So you can go down there and
fish them. You don't have togo all the way over to Florida or
all the way down south into Mexico. Had a great trip years ago down
to the Fourth Pass I think itwas in Mexico. You just you cross
over down close to the border orat the border, and then you drive
(53:34):
for a long time. Then youget in this giant dune buggy machine.
Six or eight of you or tenof you or whatever with all your gear,
and we went another good twenty somethingmiles down the beach to a lodge
that was down there back when Iwas at the paper. I made two
trips down there. Fantastic just walkingup and down the beach. There's one
(53:54):
spot had a jetty. We hadcrossed it well in inland. There was
a in that buggy. It floatedand we went back and fished that place.
We caught some good snook off therocks there. It's fascinating area seven
one three, two one two five, seven ninety. Where would you go
if you had picket anywhere from fourto six to eight weeks to really concentrate
(54:19):
on a specific fish species that youfind absolutely fascinating? If Ohivy would be
on your list to go up therein live scope a twelve or fourteen pound
bass, that's perfectly fine with me. That kind of appeals to me.
I would like to do it onetime, just to see it work.
I'm not a super fan of playinga video game instead of fishing, and
(54:43):
they're they're different things, but stillit's it's a legitimate option these days,
all right. We got to takea break here, Melvin God bless you.
You've been so patient while I rambled, what's your what is your your
fantasy tree up fishing wise? Iwant to know. Pardon me on the
(55:04):
way out here. So this isSports Talk seven ninety on the Goal with
iHeartRadio friends. You've got to try. The conversation continues this as the Doug
Pipe Show. I breathed, though, just breathe, It'll be okay,
We'll get through this. So frustrating, it truly, truly is. It's
(55:24):
just so very frustrating to realize thatin the twenty first century, with ample
notice that this thing was coming, and I do mean ample notice, and
just nothing, just nothing. Billywaded in. He's in a bit of
a predicament, and I think Imay have an idea. Billy two sub
(55:52):
back to back emails about thirty sixhours before Beryl, somebody gave me a
fifty gallon aquarium with all the setup, and about twenty five let's see twenty
five of these, A bunch offish, a bunch of fish. And
what he's wondering, Well, he'sasking me about about fish aquariums, and
(56:14):
I don't know nearly as much assomebody at a pet store. And I
wish I could help you. Butthe bottom line then comes the next email,
which reveals that he is still outof power and he's wondering how to
get some sort of air to thosefish. I would highly recommend going to
(56:36):
some place that sells fishing tackle andbuying a battery operated aerrator. Those are
easy, they're not expensive, andI'd get one that runs on a six
volt battery because I suspect that batterywould last longer than something that runs on
a pair of DA pardon D batteries. Just kind of get the biggest one
(56:59):
you can and count on. Goshit may I don't know. You may
burn through a battery or two aday, but that'd be cheaper than replacing
all those fish and keep them fromsuffocating because they're not getting any air circulated
through there. You know something elseyou could do a poor man's air raider.
I think might be to just getan old egg beater or something,
(57:21):
or rig up some way to addair to that water. I'm not sure
how you would do it. Ican tell you one little secret that I
recall from buying live shrimp on thepier at Deerfield Beach, Florida. One
hundred years ago, when I wasjust a little kid visiting my grandparents,
they sold live shrimp by the peace. I don't remember exactly how much they
(57:45):
were each, but whatever it was, that's where I spent my lunch money
when I got dropped off at thepier early in the morning and was supposedly
they thought I was hooked up forsome little bit of breakfast and then a
little bit of lunch and then maybea little bit more money. For eight
equal three equal parts of my fewdollars, they dropped me off there with
(58:06):
whatever it was. Mostly I spentit all on bait. Maybe that's why
I didn't gain any weight over thesummer. In any event, when they
sold live shrimp, they sold themin a paper bucket, a compressed paper
bucket that had a couple of smallpieces of newspaper in it, kind of
draped over the sides. And whenthey poured the water into that bucket and
(58:30):
put the shrimp in it, thewater had the water's pouring bubbles in there
the whole time, and those bubblesgrab onto the newspaper and the fish,
or not the fish, but theshrimp also get to grab onto that newspaper
and it gives them something to hangon to rather than being in a plastic
(58:51):
bucket or a fiberglass bait well somewhereand not having anything to keep them from
having to swim constantly in circulating water. The tip that I've given a couple
of people over the years with baitwells and live shrimp is to put a
piece of fiberglass window screen in there, anchor a piece in there or two
(59:17):
along the sides, and maybe evenat the bottom, and give those shrimp
something to hang on to to wherethey don't have to be constantly swimming.
Just imagine yourself in a lap pooland there's no place to hang on to,
there's no side, there's no nothing, and you just have to swim
(59:37):
and swim and swim. You'd gettired after a while and sink to the
bottom. Unfortunately, shrimp live onthe bottom. But if they're getting beat
around and banged around by water ina boat or riding in a truck or
whatnot, that just knocks the lifeout of them eventually. Okay, that's
taken care of. Let me seeI got a new email here. Okay,
(01:00:01):
well, okay, that's good.Oh okay, anyway, that's that's
more personal email than real email orshow email if you will, so I
am. I'm really honest, honestlywant to know where would you guys go,
if you've got if you had fouror five, six weeks that you
could just take off and it wouldbe perfectly okay with whomever you work for,
(01:00:24):
with your family, that you takeyour family with you if you want
and go spend four or six weekschasing something. Maybe it's a hunting trip
you want to make. Maybe it'sa fishing trip you want to make.
I'm curious even a golf trip. We're getting close enough to the nine o'clock
hour that I could talk about golfa little bit, And there are some
places I don't know that I wouldreally I'm not sure that if I had
(01:00:49):
six weeks to play golf every dayif I wanted to, or just as
many times as I wanted, Idon't know that I would go over to
Europe at all. I respect andtruly admire the courses in Great Britain,
especially up in Scotland, but Idon't know that I would want to spend
(01:01:09):
six weeks over there playing when Iabsolutely know that there are a lot of
courses I would like to play alot of courses. I would like to
play right here in these United States. We're going to talk to Mike.
See what's on for him. What'sup, Mike? How are you doing,
young man? I'm getting through.Well, I'm a little late getting
(01:01:31):
getting up and listening. But sorright, did you ever get your roof
on? The roof was on.Yes, the new roof was on,
which is great. There was alittle there was a minor little issue with
a vent stack. The roof itselfis fine, but there was a little
bit of water that got past thevent stack through the worst of the blow.
And I think that problem will resolveitself with just not sixty to eighty
(01:01:53):
mile an hour wind. Well, let's talk about something fun good. If
I had six weeks and the moneyto do it, yeah, no,
money's no object. I would notgo far. I would go to South
Texas and hunt quail opening season,Oh my gosh, yeah, good dogs.
(01:02:14):
Yep. And then and then whenmy legs got tired, I'd head
over to back in May and stayon it boat I got sick. You
know that sounds pretty good. Justand then just do that every day for
sixty days, you bet days well, yeah, that morning, that morning
(01:02:35):
quail hunt appeals, And that didn'tcome up at dinner last night, but
I know that that one of theguys at that table, if if either
of us had thought of it,it would have it would have jumped really
high up the list, for sure. I can't think of a better way
to eat good food for six weeks. Man oh man. Yeah, quail
hunting is one of my favorites. It is, it really is. But
it's so hard now because the wildpopulations of quail are being so horribly displaced
(01:03:01):
unfortunately by development. Back when Iwas guiding on the Kadi Prairie, Mike,
there were almost every one of thoserice farms had these big rows of
roseheage or yeah, rose hedge, just big tall, natural habitat for quail.
And there were a lot of quailon that prairie. Remember that.
(01:03:24):
There were a few farmers who wouldlet us hunt them, and then the
others were, oh no, we'requail hunters ourselves, now, don't don't
mess with our quail. If you'dwalk down those things without a dog,
they scare you to death when theycome up. Oh my gosh, Indeed,
the only thing will scare you moreis a pheasant that comes out of
you look down and it looks likesomebody's mowed the green at Augusta, nashvill
(01:03:45):
and there's no way anything could hidein there, And all of a sudden,
a full grown pheasant comes blowing outof it. It's just like,
holy cow, where did he comefrom? Birds? Yes, they do?
Thank you, Mike. I'm I'mfired up. I've forgotten all about
being out of electricity for a longtime. Right then yourself? Yeah,
(01:04:06):
thank you, Mike. I appreciatethe call. Buddy, Audience seven one
three two one two five seven ninetyEmail me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com.
I got That's an email that I'llhave to deal with later. I've got
some gun stuff that I want totalk about when we come back. I'm
going to get a new feature rollingwith Carter's Country, one of my presenting
(01:04:30):
sponsors, and we're gonna start prettysoon once I get electricity back and I
kind of get it back into somesemblance of normalcy Island, get this thing
launched, and we'll get to talkingabout some real specific stuff with guns and
AMMO and optics and whatnot. Andif there's a topic that you would like
(01:04:51):
us to cover. I would reallywelcome the email that says, Okay,
hey, I've been thinking about thisrelation to the shooting sports and I'd really
like to hear one of those segmentsabout that. And I think they'll be
very informative. I think they'll bevery fun, and every one of us
(01:05:12):
is going to come out a lotbetter. I know. That's the way
that fifty plus works for me overon KPRC Tuesdays through Fridays. I have
over the eight and a half yearsi've been doing that show, now,
I have learned so much, anda lot of my knowledge has come from
when it comes from the experts Ican get on the line. I've got
access to experts in just about anythingthat anybody in my age group would enjoy.
(01:05:40):
And if your parents would enjoy, send them over to fifty plus.
Let them listen on weekdays at noon, and I promise you they'll come away
knowing more than they tuned in with. There's going to be something that's of
value to them shared that day byan expert, whether it's in the health
field, whether it's finances, whetherit's a state planning, whether it's theater,
(01:06:05):
you name it. We talk aboutit on fifty plus and even some
stuff there. It's the only timethere's one person. I'm not gonna name
her, but there is one person, and I've interviewed her three or four
times over the years, and sheis the only person that ever made me
blush on the road on the radio. And it was like, really,
(01:06:26):
and it's my own fault because asthe question was coming into my mind,
I knew that I should just stoptalking, but I couldn't make my mouth
stop moving and I couldn't make myvoice shut up in time. And she
answered exactly how I knew she wasgonna answer, and I just like,
oh, oh no, all right, we gotta take a little break.
(01:06:50):
This is Sports Talk seven ninety onlineat sports seven ninety dot com. Now
the more Doug fight applot forward andstaring at my Oh, I got to
plug in my laptop here in justa minute. I forgot to do that.
I was gonna do it during thevery first break of the program,
when we just got cooking and kepton going, just kept on going.
(01:07:14):
Danny Wade in, thank you,Danny, I appreciate that this is not
really a bad idea as far astaking six weeks off all expenses paid,
no matter where you wanted to go, Where would you go and what would
you chase? Danny said, Ijust travel America for six weeks. I
hadn't seen this second sentence until Ijust looked down hunting for the coldest beer
(01:07:38):
in the USA. Wow, nothinggoes together. Nothing goes together better,
I would guess, than then drivingand looking for cold beer. I'm with
him. Fine, one you celebratedriving again. Oh you gotta stop every
now and then, Danny, yougotta stop enjoy put though. When you
(01:07:59):
find great cold here, put itin the RV fridge, and then just
wait till you stop, Wait tillyou're hooked up to your electricity if it's
available where you are. Don't beslowing down around my house. There's nothing
to plug in there. God,I'm very tempted to run an extension cord
across the street. I really am. I talked to somebody yesterday who had
(01:08:23):
a friend years ago had a stormcome through and there was electricity on one
side of the street and not theother. And the people on the not
electricity side came over and knocked onthe door, and both of them were
actually electrical engineers and said, hey, would you mind if we ran a
line from your house over to ourhouse to power up a couple of fans
(01:08:45):
or something like, sure, whatever, just be careful, we don't want
anybody to get hurt. And acouple of hours later they looked out and
there was this extension cord that hadbeen neatly and securely taped to the to
the street and to the sidewalk andup the walks and into their house on
the other side of the street, and just plugged into the outlet on the
(01:09:09):
front porch of the house that wassupplying them with power. Cars were able
to pass, everything was able togo on almost like normal, and at
least across the street they had fans. I'm trying to decide at this point
whether when it's not raining, itwould be more or less advantageous to open
(01:09:30):
the windows and let some of thatstale hot in the air inside my house
flow on out with a breeze. If there's any kind of a breeze.
I would think that any moving airwould be better than none to kind of
keep the house from getting too stale. What do you think, Melvin,
I think that'd be a great idea. Maybe you might want to try it
(01:09:53):
cloudy, you know, right aftera rain, when it feels a little
bit cooler outside. Oh, ofcourse, at least let that cooler air
get in there and then make themake the sun go to work trying to
make it hot again. That wouldn'tbe bad, Actually, I made so.
I think that's what I may dothat today. I'm gonna go out
there and see what's up. Yeah, that might not be a bad idea,
(01:10:15):
Melvin. If it works. Ifyou try it and it works,
let me know. And if Itry it and it works to cool the
house down a few degrees. Wehave a two story and the upstairs is
clear. It's a good five degreeswarmer upstairs than downstairs, and there may
be a little bit more difference evenearly in the morning when the air downstairs
(01:10:36):
has cooled somehow. That along withthat towel technique. Oh yeah, the
paper towel thing, wet paper towels. I'm gonna I'm gonna test fire that
too. If I go back outto the house, got water, get
a towel and do that as well. Boy, no kidding, I just
yeah, just strip down and justput a wet towel over you just use
it as a blanket. Okay,it might get phone calls, you know,
(01:11:00):
get out of the yard, man, at least take it back inside.
Oh my word, this has gotto stop. It's just got to
stop at some point. There weretrucks lined up yesterday at the high school
that is about a mile and ahalf from my house. What are they
doing this morning? And why ismy my power not back on? And
(01:11:21):
why am I running so late onthis break? Holy cow, you gotta
warn me man when we'll get closelike this. The fourth segment of this
hour is gonna be a little shortbecause the third segment went a little long.
Just to just picture, if you'relooking for something to really make breakfast
go down good this morning, justimagine Melbourn and me stripped down to our
(01:11:43):
underwear in the front yard with wettowels overs. That'll that'll get your day
off to a fun start. Huh, black visual, Oh this is Sportstock
seven ninety. Facebook dot com slashSportstock seven ninety. Back to the there
in a minute, Melvin, Melvinwon. Melvin was ready to go start
(01:12:03):
talking about golf. Not quite yetbut close, not yet but soon seven
one, three, two, fourtwo eighty one oh more mercy two one
two five seven ninety. I mypoor brain, my poor poor brain has
just been beaten to death. Sevenone three two one two five seven nine
(01:12:28):
zero. That is our number.I'm trying to multitask, and clearly at
this point it's not working so good. We'll get back. Everything's gonna come
back at some point. We're allgonna be. This will be in the
rear view mirror for some of us, a little bit more uncomfortable a memory
than others. And one thing thatI saw early this morning was that the
(01:12:53):
death toll from this storm, Ibelieve is up to around eight at this
point, and the store noted thatcould change with a little more time.
Well, yeah, if they don'tget the power back on really soon.
There are gonna be some people inthis greater Houston area of ours, among
(01:13:14):
five or six million people who justcan't take the heat. Whether it's because
of an illness, whether it's becauseof their age some condition, whether it's
an inability to just get out andget basic survival food and water. There's
somebody in this town somewhere who justis at their wits end and has lost
(01:13:40):
the strength to get anything done andhas nowhere to turn. If you have
no if you have no power andyou can't get out, then even if
you have a cell phone, thatcell phone eventually loses its charge. Even
if you have a cooler and abag of ice, that bag of ice
is gonna melt in a very shorttime. And that's that's what scares me.
(01:14:03):
For for Houston, and it canfor and all the way from here
to the coast. I got anemail, let me see who it was
from. Real quick. I sawthis on there, Kevin, still no
power for us at the beach line. Trucks out two hours earlier this morning
(01:14:24):
than all previous days. I guessthey negotiated time and a half on the
contract. Lol. Yeah, Centerpointbetter just open the wallet and say,
just everybody go to work. Everybodygo to work. You're all gonna get
paid, and maybe, just maybewe cannot have to talk about this kind
(01:14:44):
of Dare I even say it tomorrow? I want all of us back as
soon as possible. My wife wantsto go home and wash some clothes.
We're we're running out of stuff towear. My my son's playing in a
baseball tournament this weekend. Now,Fortunately they have an enough he has enough
pants and they have enough jerseys, believe it or not to get all the
way through the weekend kind of withoutwearing the same clothes. So that's good
(01:15:10):
at least, But man, thatsomething's just gonna have to give. Mark
wad In from all the way overin Georgia, thank you for listening.
Mark. I'm sorry you're having tolisten to me grind like I'm doing now.
I'm sorry about that. He wouldgo, he says, he would
(01:15:30):
go to Alaska and take a Ilike the way everybody's thinking on this,
take a floatplane to everywhere a floatplanecan go for six weeks, and whatever
guy's in that area fish or hunttheir specialty. That's a really specific trip.
That's a very specific trip, andI kind of like it. I'd
(01:15:53):
make that run. I would, man, just bring bring a few fly
rods. Bring a casting rod oraugust spinning rods would be more appropriate up
there. Bring your rifles. Idon't know if I'd worry about bird hunting
in Alaska. I think I couldleave the ptarmigan alone and whatever else they
may have up there. I thinkthey have ptarmigan up there. I'm not
(01:16:15):
familiar with Alaskan bird hunting. Thatducks. I know they have ducks up
in Alaska, so maybe you couldknock a few of them down. But
by and large, an Alaska tripwould suit me fine. While I was
at the newspaper, Joe Dogg hadhad I was talking. I was telling
this story last night at dinner whileI was there. After Bob had retired,
(01:16:38):
by Brister had retired, it wasjust Joe Dogg getting me for quite
some time. And then we addedShannon Tompkins, and so the three of
us, we're trying not to duplicateeach other's travels so that we didn't have
redundancy in our feature stories and whatnot. And Joe had already kind of staked
to claim in Alaska. I turneddown probably I don't know, a dozen
(01:17:00):
trips to Alaska while I was there, easily, just because we didn't need
an overabundance of stories about places thatwere that far away and that kind of
hard to do. So I inturn leaned into the Caribbean and Central America.
(01:17:23):
Shannon liked those places. Is alot of Central American, well,
not a lot of Central American stuff. He made an Amazon trip for example,
that was I was contemplating one tryingto put one together and then lo
and behold, he kind of beatme to the punch, and good for
him. It was a fantastic tripfor him. It's not like I got
cheated and didn't get to go anywhere. I got to go fishing Sweden.
(01:17:44):
That was fun. The only placeon the planet where I've caught an actual
pike. I think that was kindof neat. I got to go where
a boy just a lot of placesand had a lot of fun. That
was a good run. We weretalking about that at dinner last night,
about how how much how much revenuenewspapers nationally were making off outdoors coverage and
(01:18:09):
most likely still could today if theyhad real outdoors coverage. But over the
years the outdoor writers have either beenlet go or have retired or changed over
to something else and haven't been replaced. And it's really frustrating because to this
day, Joe and I have talkedabout this to this day when we go
(01:18:31):
out or just I just randomly theother day, some guy walked up to
me in a grocery store and askedif I was Dug Pike, and I
said, yeah, I am,and he just said, man, I
really enjoyed reading your stuff, andJoe's and Shannon's really loved it. When
you guys were at the newspaper, what happened, Well, we just we
got sent put out to pasture.Basically, coverage was reduced, and it
(01:18:56):
just the the politics of newspapers changeddramatically and that once that happened, and
once they decided they didn't need outdoorscoverage, which I know cost them a
lot of money because I know someof the advertisers who were in there regularly,
and I know what they were spendinga year, and it was far
(01:19:17):
more than we were being paid,I can assure you. So I don't
understand, well, I do understandwhy they did it, Yes they do.
The newspaper industry nationally has dramatically changed, just dramatically changed, and I
don't particularly think for the better.Holy cow, I'm late again. I'm
(01:19:38):
late again. I am going totell you guys about This is the Doug
Pike Show, brought to you byAmerican Shooting Centers, Guns, Shooting and
Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. NowHere's Doug Pike. Third and final hour
of the program starts right now nineo'clock. It is go ahead, nine
(01:20:00):
oh five. How time flies right. I just boy, I just keep
looking back at my phone, justpraying I'm going to see a text message
from my neighbor to let me knowthings are going okay. I'm gonna drive
out there, I think, rightafter the show and just see where the
trucks are and see if there's anybodyin our neighborhood, and just say a
little prayer when I pull in,and hope and hope and hope. Seven
(01:20:23):
one three two one two five sevenninety. Let's go take a look at
the Genesis Scottish Open in progress,as they say, the leader board.
Let me see we're leading up.What we're leading up to all obviously is
the the Open Championship, but theGenesis Scottish Open is kind of a way
(01:20:43):
for somebody who's not in, notin the big tournament. It's like a
play in really a board Oberg, excuse me, Oberg twelve, Tommy Fleetwood
eleven along with Rosner I can't remembertheir first name, is a couple of
them, and I'm in bear.Let me see if I flip to the
whole leaderboard, it'll help me out. I know it will. Yes,
(01:21:05):
Ludwig Oberg with the little circle overthe A, so we know to pronounce
it with an oh, why don'tthey just put the O they're bigger and
leave off the anyway, lud bigOldberg twelve under par. At eleven you
have Tommy Fleetwood and Antwine Rosner.I couldn't have called Antwine on a bed
(01:21:25):
a minute ago. At ten underpar, Maximilian Keefer, Eric von Royan
Sun Ye m and Matteo Monocero. The nine under par is clearly still in
the hunt with a little time togo, and we're just barely getting into
the third round. Now. Atnine under par, you've got Ben Griffin,
(01:21:47):
Daniel Brown, Connor, Sime MatthewJordan, Robert McIntyre, Adam Scott,
Alex Norin, Rory McElroy. Holycow, they continue, Sahita Gala,
Colin Morikala, Erasmus Hayguard and Alejandrodel Rey. I think there might
(01:22:09):
be more nines than eights. No, I'm not gonna read the eights because
I don't think I'd have time toget through them. Clearly, and important
tournament for everybody over there. Everybodyover there who is playing is desperately trying
to find their way into the bigtournament coming up. Let me see if
there's anything else going on. Holdon one second, No, there's this
(01:22:33):
is all about the Scottish Open.Every bit of the stuff at the PGA
Tour Network is about the Scottish Open. So oh, wait a minute,
let me try and then find this. I'm gonna go over to the PGA
Tour. Yeah, they're they're showingthey're going straight to it PGA Tour champions
Let's see if there's something going onthere. Yeah, here we go,
(01:22:53):
the Colleague Company's Championship. Steven Alker, the guy who I had a good
chance to talk with, not atlength, but more than just a little
bit when the seniors came through herefor the Chevron or it wasn't a Chevron.
Excuse me, that's the Inspirity.Chevron is the women's tournament. The
Inspirity is the men's tournament. StephenAlker is at seven under par. They
(01:23:16):
are Hold on, I've got toget this full leaderboard up here again so
i can see what's going on.They're up at Firestone up in Akron,
Steven Alker at seven, Steve Strickerat six, Kenny Perry and Robert Carlson
at four. K J. Choyplayed golf alongside him. Not with him.
It's kind of a weird thing.Years ago up at Carlton Woods.
(01:23:39):
As a matter of fact, he'sat three on Hill Cabrera at three.
I've met him as well. SoI ran into him at an astra or
a Rockets game one night long ago. He was there. Yeah, hold
on, I'll get back to that. Jerry Kelly also at three, and
holy cow, this is I'm sodiscombobulated by my situation that I'm making some
(01:24:04):
mistakes and I apologize and I hopeyou'll forgive me. Let's see what Aaron's
talking about here, my buddy Aaron. Oh, good for him, Good
for him. He Aaron is downin where is it. He's in Tampa,
Florida, living the dream. He'sgot a beautiful home. He's staying
(01:24:24):
in on the water, which isalways nice. And then he's got a
picture of the bay. It doesn'tshow. He's not telling me whether he's
been us. See our base forwork the next week little canal six hundred
yards from the bay, mangroves onone side, juvenile redfish stingray and some
mullet running up and down hoping tosnag some snook on a boat. Next
(01:24:47):
weekend, that sounds pretty good.Any and all of that sounds really good.
Right now, I just wish Iwere there. I need to get
back to the golf course. Thatwould help me feel a little little bit
more normal. I don't know howI would do it. I guess I
could. Technically, I just haveto drive myself out there. The place
(01:25:09):
I play most It did a shotgunstart this morning at nine to get as
many people as they could out beforeit got too hot. I would have
gone out at the crack of dawnif it were possible, just to avoid
any of the heat, because it'skind of hot. At my house,
I have sanctuary. I'm not gonnalie to you. I'm not having to
(01:25:31):
sleep in the heat thanks to thetremendous generosity of one of the men I
play golf with out there. Heopened his house for us and just let
me stay there for a couple ofnights. Now I'm hoping I don't I'm
hoping I don't have to impose anyfurther. But he's been so gracious,
and his name's John paulis wonderful man. He and his wife Anne just opened
(01:25:55):
their house to me and to trulygood friends of theirs who with whom we've
shared good conversation two nights in arow. Now it's been really I think
it's two. God, I can'teven remember. I'm pretty sure it's just
two seven one three, And ifit's more, I apologize that just the
days are starting to run together sevenone three, two one two five seven
(01:26:15):
ninety. Email me Doug Pike atiHeartMedia dot com. I'll ask again if
you could go and spend four orsix weeks chasing your dream as an outdoors
person or a golfer, no stringsattached, no expenses, it's all paid
for. Your family can either comewith you or be well accommodated while you're
(01:26:39):
gone. Where would you go?Where would you go? Billy waded in
much earlier, and I find hisemail very interesting, he writes, and
he's referring to the period post Barrel, and he writes this, haven't heard
much about windmills that are never workingand the damage they took, or the
(01:27:04):
solar panels that don't work or arestill busted from the hailstorm. I would
love to see what they look likeafter Barrel small storm. But yeah,
I bet those I bet those solarpanels would have taken quite the beating as
well. I think Mother Nature,he continues, is saying she doesn't want
(01:27:25):
that stuff in her water or onher land. You can keep making them
bigger, but she'll just keep wipingthem out. Oh my goodness. Yep.
Yeah. The windmill thing is troublesomeif you, if you really deep
dive into all of this green technology, the windmills, the solar panels,
(01:27:47):
every bit of it. It doesn'tcome without a price, and electric cars
certainly don't come without a price. When you look at pictures of big charging
stations, there was one that reallycaught my attention of all back about one
hundred charging stations. Everybody's all happyabout them. Look at this amazing thing.
We're gonna be able to charge aton of cars here, and then
(01:28:09):
right in the background they didn't evenbother to put up a hedge to try
and cover it up. Right inthe background are two giant diesel generators.
That's what they're using to charge theelectric cars that are supposed to be so
good for the environment, while fossilfuels are supposed to be bad. Unbelievable.
(01:28:31):
Let's go talk to Philip, Philipor Felipe, Felipe, good morning,
how are you doing, man? What's going on? Doing great?
Doing great? Does just you knowsooning in getting out of Saturday keeping it
going on with your show? Well? Thank you? Oh no, I
wanted to get on this, onthis conversation he had about the strip,
(01:28:51):
you know one for me. Imean I've called a few weeks back.
I'm not relief that greater efficiently,But I do know of a fish or
an era. I don't know ifyou've ever heard of it. I have
heard of them. Yeah, okay, that's one that I would love to
go. And where would you go? That would be the Amazon. Yeah
you got to go straight Amazon can't. I'm sure there's other rivers that have
(01:29:13):
them, but I would suspect thatthe Amazon River Basin would have not only
the biggest, but the most aswell. Yeah. And I know a
couple years back, you know, you had that show Riversters. I'm not
sure I watched that a lot oftimes. Yeah, I it, you
know, pretty much every single rerun, but that one episode that he goes
and gets the uh the air pinup. I thought it was great. I
(01:29:36):
mean they just looked story They're likebigger, fatter, uh gator guard.
Yeah. So yeah, I feellike they would definitely put up a fight.
But they're beautiful, beautiful fish, and you know we make boots out
of them. Beautiful scenery too.You know, you get the bonus of
being in the Amazon. That'd beawesome. Yah, yeah, that's that'll
(01:29:58):
be Yeah, you're right, Imean review because how many people do you
know say, yeah, I wentand you know, fishing the Amazon and
uh, you know, got gota connection the rainfor or something. Ye
know. Last year and the yearbefore last, both when I hosted the
Fly Fishing Film Festival done at MoodyGardens, or I didn't host it,
I am seated, And in bothyears they have had Amazon trips featured in
(01:30:19):
films, different films, but butboth showing what goes on in the Amazon
and holy cow, they catch someamazing fish down there. Beautiful. It's
just uh one of those things thatyou know, we it's not anywhere close
to where we live, so no, something that it would be great to
experience. Uh So, I meanthat's my take on it. I like
(01:30:41):
it, could you could you staydown there six weeks? I think I
could? I probably well right now, I think without being powered without me,
with being without power a lot ofpeople are like, no, we
couldn't do it, but just toget away from all this, Yeah,
I would have a break from lifejust to kick back relaxed. Is do
whatever I need to do down there. I will definitely do it. Yeah.
(01:31:02):
My dream trip right now goes toanywhere but here and last exactly until
my power comes back on. Isso good to hear from you this morning,
man. I like that. Ilike that. I'd never made it
to the Amazon. Like I saidearlier, Shannon Tompkins made a trip down
there and he came back just grinningfrom here to hear, so I was
(01:31:26):
a little jealous, but that's okay. We all we all got our trips
in. Thank you, man.I hope you get to go there someday,
and if you do, you bettersend me pictures. I'll probably bring
you along with me. Oh okay, I'm in count In man. Thank
you, Yes, sir, thankyou. Yeah, thanks, I'll see
you audios. Okay, let meget that done. I got to take
a break. Holy cow, lookup and holy cow. This is Sports
(01:31:50):
Talk seven ninety a Houston sports fanon air and on Facebook. Back to
the Doug Fike Show nine twenty fouron Sports Talk seven to ninety the Doug
Pike Show. I think Melvin hita home run with this one. To
(01:32:12):
the thief. You want to bethe joker of the thief. It doesn't
matter to me. Whatever it is. There's got to be some way out
of here. Oh my word,it's just so it's so first trading.
And I'm sorry for all of youwho have power and you've gotten back to
your lives. You got it back, you never lost it, whatever.
But for Melvin, to me,it's just a little bit different. And
(01:32:34):
thank you for allowing us to venta little bit, because right now that's
all we can do. That's justall we can do is vent, and
it's it's so very difficult. I'mlooking by the way. I wanted to
kind of shift gears away from oursituation and back into everybody else who's looking
(01:32:57):
for something to distract them and takethem away from I'm all this mess.
And what I've found is that thewind along the coast actually is very light
this morning. It is darned nearcalm in a lot of places. Ten
miles an hour pretty much everywhere offthe Galveston Bay system, then down at
San Luis Pass well ten at SanLuis Pass nine miles an hour. It
(01:33:24):
shows dead offshore. But there's alsothere's conflicting information right now about the wind.
Mostly it's calm, really, withthe exception of Galveston Bay. There
is not a double digit wind volumeanywhere on the coast. Everything it's calm
(01:33:46):
after the storm, I suppose couldcall it, but one way or the
other, not blowing very hard. Now the same kind of recycled. It
looks a little bit more realistic,it's still the same value. I have
to take that back. There's one. Let's see where this is. I'm
not sure. Oh yeah, southBird Island showing sixteen at South Bird Island.
That's an anomaly. I don't know. Maybe somebody drove by the weather
(01:34:09):
vane real fast, because on eitherside of that you have a zero in
an eight, So that's an anomaly. There's a Galveson Bay. Where are
we showing now? A little bit. Galveston Bay settled down a good bit.
Oh yeah, we're doing well.Overall, we're doing very well.
A little bit of breeze, alight breeze, and most of it is
(01:34:31):
it well, most of its sideshoreup on our end of the coast,
which is not exactly spectacular for fishingprospects, but at least it's just not
blowing the covers off things. Thatfeels pretty good. So if you have
time and you wanted to just reconnectto the Gulf of Mexico in a calmer
state, this would be your opportunity. I'm checking the Jetti Park camera down
(01:34:56):
there at surfside, and it's nothingbut little bitty waves, just little,
teeny tiny waves. There are abouttwenty pelicans out on the on the end
of the jetty and very few peoplefishing. I suspect the water is still
very muddy, especially with that sideshorewind. There's a boat heading offshore or
is he coming back in? Ibelieve he's actually maybe coming back in now.
(01:35:17):
It can't now he's going out.Don't know where he's going, but
if he can find some clean water, there's no telling what he'd find in
it. I would bet that ifthere is a green streak out there,
within a couple of miles there wouldbe there'd be some pretty decent fishing lot.
I hesitate to name any species rightnow because I haven't heard from anybody
(01:35:38):
down there in a little while, but way out there, certainly fish to
catch and a little bit closer. As long as you can find decent water,
I would imagine it wouldn't be tooterrible. Seven one three, two,
one two five seven ninety Email meDougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. Okay,
says I got to notice that somethingwent hold on. A message was
(01:36:03):
blocked. I don't know why itwould have been blocked. I don't know
who that is. That's kind ofweird. I'm gonna take that one out
of there. I'm not sure whatit is or where it came from,
but I had to dump it outof there because I'm not sure what it
is. And now come back uphere. Ah, Donald wayh's in.
(01:36:26):
He's fished the Amazon three times. Not jealous, but man, what an
ultimate way to dial it in eachtime and get a little bit more specific
and more specific. Donald writes, hold on, let me open it up.
Fish there on three occasions, twicewith the Amazon Queen Lodge. I've
heard of that and mothership and oncewe flew in by floatplane and camped along
(01:36:53):
the shoreline for seven days. Holycaw. Yeah, I can see why
hertes what he writes beyond that, glad I did that, But I'll never
do that again. Seven days onthe shoreline of the Amazon. That's that's
(01:37:13):
pretty isolated and remote. And whenthat floatplane flies away, you probably probably
realize just how remote you are.And who knows, fifty eighty one hundred
miles from any sort of medical careother than a big old, big old
first aid kid. I'm sure theydrop off with you for a week's day,
(01:37:38):
but other than that, you getin trouble. There you're you're just
in trouble. You're just in trouble. That's crazy. Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety, butit's a good kind of crazy. Hey,
Jeff, what's up man, Doug. I'm sorry about your travails.
I thought this sort of been solvedTuesday afternoon. Thank you. Yeah,
I really, I'm with you.I wanted to see what you're in.
(01:37:59):
Analysis was of the storm. Itseemed like it was a weird one and
maybe the media adiots were vindicated becauseit ended up being pretty destructor. Well,
there were a lot of people withinmedia also reminding us that it was
only going to hit as a catone. It wasn't going to be that
big a deal because well, Idon't know why they didn't think so.
(01:38:21):
But this was the first one ina while that actually put Houston on the
dirty side. I saw a greattrack line of about a half a dozen
recent storms that all kind of putthe worst of it over east of us.
We got the sweet side of allthose storms. And there's only been
(01:38:42):
one other that ran a dirty sideup through here, and I can't remember
the name of which one it was. But this one, this one brought,
although it was a Cat one whenit landed, it brought some really
nasty stuff with it, a fullblown Cat one experience, rather than just
a glancing blow like so many ofthese others had been. And nobody was
(01:39:04):
ready for this. Nobody who shouldhave been ready was ready. You and
I can't do anything but what wecan do, and that's very limited to
our own property. Basically, ifyou have a beach house, you board
up the windows. If you haveyour own home, you get the patio
furniture off the back porch, youput the garbage cans in the garage,
and that's about all you can do. But for center Point, for city
(01:39:29):
government, for county government, fromthe coast all the way up through Conroe,
a lot of balls were dropped.I think, well, we had
the right person in the mayor's chaireven if everything that didn't go right instead
of the competition. And also wedid keep our water. I don't know
if anybody had to boil water, but that would have been a real disaster.
(01:39:51):
They're actually I saw somebody yesterday onthat neighborhood app who was lamenting and
said no power and now no water. So I'm not sure exactly where that
was, but yeah, can youimagine. I mean, what do you
do? Where do you go?You can't you don't have running water?
Now what are you supposed to do? I just go ahead. It's just
(01:40:15):
it's apocalyptic, it really is,and there's no reason for it. This
is the fourth largest city in thecountry. They ought to have so many
resources available to them, but we'rejust well, it's not working. If
we have a busy year like tolike spend predicted the last three or four
years, we're really in trouble unlessthey learn from this, like right now,
you're exactly right. There better beone hundred people in a room somewhere
(01:40:40):
going day by day on this thing, saying what went wrong this day?
What went wrong this day? Becausethey're not getting fixed. There's still something
like six hundred thousand people without power. That's ten percent of our population without
power in the fourth largest city inAmerica with ten or twelve thousand electrical people
here, probably five thousand trucks andwe're not fixed yet, no excuse,
(01:41:06):
Thanks very much. I hope youget back up up to power and routine
pretty soon. Yeah, you andme both, thank you. Jeff,
I appreciate it. Man, thankyou. We'll bank. Yeah, I
appreciate all the well wishes, andI really do. And Melvin and I
are going to we'll be here tomorrowsomehow, someway, we will be here
tomorrow. You planning on coming onin marrow? Melvin, Yes, sir,
(01:41:27):
I appreciate that. Oh look, who's listening, Lisa. This is
Lisa Hill from vip glass people.I've been telling you about if you get
a little rock chip, they cantake care of you. And man,
maybe, Lisa, I hope you'restill listening because I asked a question this
morning of myself that I was goingto ask you. And if you're still
listening, text me to let meknow if, for example, somebody,
(01:41:48):
somebody who really needed to go somewhere, really needed to drive, got a
rock ship at about seven thirty oreight o'clock in the morning. Is it
would it be possible for them ifthey had to make an emergency road trip
that afternoon, could they get theircar fixed that same day? That's my
question for Lisa at vip glass, and boy, I'm putting her on a
(01:42:10):
spot. I know, I am, but I got a hunch. I
know the answer I got, andI oh, well, they're gonna have
fun at the beach. I hopeI didn't run your trip to Galvis to
Lisa by asking that difficult question,But it was just something I was thinking
about because it was it was justsuch a seamless experience for me and such
a wonderful experience for me, Andthere was just that I called her in
(01:42:31):
the afternoon and they couldn't get toit till the next morning. But I
wonder if that could be done, and I bet in an emergency they could
help somebody out Otherwise one day, that's not a big deal. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninetyEmail me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com.
Don't forget that number, by theway, let me go get it.
I want to tell you again, since Lisa's listening, and I want to
(01:42:53):
make sure that I get it right. I'm gonna go back to my paperwork
to get it. Here it isput her number was not her personal cell
phone number. This is the thisis the company number. Put it in
your phone. Because when you doget that little click on your windshield and
you look and you see, ohgreat, there's a chip. I don't
want it to become a spider weball over my windshield. Two eight one
(01:43:16):
eight zero seven fourteen eighty eight. Two eight one eight zero seven fourteen eighty
eight. I'm telling you at somepoint you're gonna need it when you hear
that little pick like that. Ifyou do and you see that crack,
you better get it fixed. Allright? We are? Where are we?
Who's calling Melvin? Do you know? There we go, we'll find
(01:43:38):
out we are. We're passed. We're already passed the break again. This
is Sports Talk seven ninety Breaking SportsNews on Facebook twenty four to seven.
We'll get that information to them. This is the Doug Pipe Show nine three
on Sports Talk seven ninety. Goodheavens, We're already at the point where
we're supposed to take the last break, aren't we. No, we're not
(01:44:00):
doing it now we're on Wait aminute, I have some really really good
news, really really good news foranybody who has put that phone number for
VIP Auto Glass into their phones andmaybe someday gets an early morning chip.
Lisa responded, I'm listening. Here'swhat it says here one hundred percent.
(01:44:26):
Yes, sir, that is correct. We can help them. Good morning,
Doug, Yes, sir. Soall we ask from our customers that
are looking to have a rock chickrock chip done, just give us a
call when they're driving so that wecan have a ready and waiting technician for
them take care of them right away. Oh my gosh. Simple rock chips
(01:44:46):
only take about fifteen to twenty minutesfrom start to finish. Get that chip
taken care of. Now, ifit's a complete replacement, they're probably going
to need a little bit more time. But the bottom line is if they
have that glass union, unless you'redriving some exotic car with some fancy glass
or something, they can probably takecare of you that same day and not
(01:45:09):
in a whole lot of time.Little rock chips fifteen twenty minutes. They
use that process you've seen before.Guys on the side of the road doing
I don't see them out much anymore. I suspect because people have figured out
that it's a lot better to usesomebody like vip autoglass that does this every
day and that's all they do,than to just park under some pop up
(01:45:30):
tent somewhere and get somebody you don'tknow to do it. Vip autoglass took
care of me. They'll take careof you. I'm so glad to hear
from you, a Lisa, Thankyou very much, vip autoglass dot com,
vip autoglass tx dot com. Andthere's a reason you got to do
that, vip autoglass tx dot com. Let's go talk to Forest. What's
(01:45:51):
forest? My man? Does?Man? Sorry about your center pointlessness?
Done here? Dying man, I'lltell you what I was. You don't
realize, you know, And thismade me think, you know, the
society you and I grew up inis so far gone from what's going on
(01:46:15):
today with I don't know if Iwant to use the word the softness of
the people, the yeah yeah, and the unpreparedness. I mean, this
is a category one storm that, other than the power, didn't really do
much damage wise. I guess itcould have, but you know, people
up here in the country, youknow, they're fighting at gas stations,
(01:46:35):
fighting at the grocery store, allhaving to be called out, like in
Trinity, I believe it was.And this over category one. What happens
when it's a Category four? Whathappened when it's World War three? I
mean, we're going to kill eachother. It's it's stupid. Are you
seeing that? Down there? Somebodyin Fort ben County yesterday pulled a gun
on one of the center Point workersand nothing happened from it. But nonetheless,
(01:47:01):
somebody pulled a gun on somebody whowas trying to restore power, maybe
not to their house, but atleast to somebody's house, and their house
would have been a little bit closerto the end of the line then,
or closer to the front of theline had they not started that little problem.
Yeah, that's an excuse. Yeah, people go up here. You
know, I'm gonna go find themand see what the hell they're doing.
(01:47:24):
They need to be working on us. And like our little subdivision here,
you know, we got livings tomright down the street, which is a
lot bigger problem than my subdivision, not Alaska. So I told them,
hey, man, I'm sure they'regoing to do it by priority, you
know, and you know, youonly got so many. You don't have
a million guys out there trying torestore a million power. But just how
unprepared we are and how people justit's the entitled people. It's like it's
(01:47:47):
like I should have my power aboutyesterday. Yeah, you know. And
it's crazy when you when you seethat, and then it really shows you
how screwed up our society is.I think, you know, yeah,
I think it kind of shows adisconnect where people are fending for themselves rather
than coming together. Now, rightafter the storm in my neighborhood, there
(01:48:08):
were a lot of people out there, and I meant to mention this earlier.
There was actually I was out thereraking the front of my yard and
trying to get things piled up andwhatnot, and it was a mess,
and there was a ton of debrisin the street and I heard a noise
behind me, and I turned aroundand there's this young man in his probably
mid twenties, maybe late twenties, probably six four and just nothing but muscle,
(01:48:31):
okay, and he's got a pushbroom and he is methodically pushing debris
away from the curb so that watercan make it to the gutter without plugging
up the gutter with all those leaves. And he did that, I know
for a fact, for at leastabout four hundred yards, and I suspect
from looking a little later in theday that he went back out and did
(01:48:54):
about another two hundred yards of thatall by himself. It was amazing.
That's rare. That's rare to see. Well, I know, man,
but he's know, my buddy gotit. I've got a good buddy in
spring. And I know, Iknow he said it hurt him financially,
but he goes, he goes.Man. When that power went out,
he was that was the worst fortyfive seconds of my life because he spent
the money on their nice generation.Yeah, he said, man, not
(01:49:15):
just not having to get out thereamongst the people was worth every dime he
spit on that thing. You know, Well, that's that's true. The
generators are great. However, they'renot maintenance free. And the people who
are staying with the man who's beennice enough to let me come over,
(01:49:35):
they have a big whole home generator. I don't even know what brand it
is, but it won't work. It's not working. There's been maintained,
it's had everything's supposed to do,and when the power went out, it
stayed out. It didn't it didn'tkick on at all. So they're nothing
hung out, you know. Yeah, a lot of the people they don't.
You know, you've got to getout there. It's like any it's
(01:49:57):
like a boat sitting in your garage. You got to get out there and
run it. Even if the poweryou sure assume it's gonna sit there forever
and run, you know, lldo it to keep it moving, yes,
sir, moving. You know.We have issues with the noise of
generators and that that affects my wife'shealth and that's a problem for us.
Trying to even stay home in ourhome right now is because she can't take
(01:50:18):
that noise. And around us wehave at least four and maybe five generators
going, which is just it's brutal. I gotta take a break for bro.
We're almost out of time. Holycow. Well stay safe, you're
okay, all right, We're gonnatake a little break here. When we
get back, we'll wrap it upand cross our fingers and and just hope
(01:50:42):
that everybody who's still without power, man it's I hope it's your turn today,
even if it's not my turn.Okay, some of us got to
get this power back, and soonit's getting a little everybody's getting a little
edgy. Well, we'll make itthrough. I just hope it's sooner rather
than later. We'll be back ina minute. Seven ninety. This is
Sports Talk seven ninety Houston Sports Onlineat sports seven ninety dot com. Back
(01:51:08):
to the Doug Bike Show. Startme up? Yeah, how about you
start up my electricity? Absolutely Iknew it was, absolutely knew it was.
Oh my gosh, started up speakingof what's up? Dan? Match
you look who welcome aboard? Man? Do you have power? I mean,
(01:51:29):
I don't think we want to getinto that conversation, do we you
do it? Don't? I don't. I don't either, Melvin me and
you no power? I guess Iguess we're what the twenty five percent that
still is without I don't I readI think I read this morning something about
six hundred or I don't six hundredand fifty thousand people still without power in
(01:51:50):
the fourth largest city in America withten twelve thousand people working on I don't
want to name any names here. But you know, for companies that have
leaders who have pictures taken of themsitting in air conditioned rooms that have a
thermostat behind them that has seventy degrees, I mean, maybe just a little
tone death. I don't know.Yeah, that's that's one of the issues
(01:52:13):
that I heard brought up last night. You're on TV. You're telling people
to set their thermostats at seventy eightand right behind you who staged that?
Who set that camera? Angle up? Right behind you? Is your thermostat?
Said? What was it? Seventyone? I think, right,
yeah, well, my thermistat's noteven on because well, you know,
when I go through my house,I've got to have a flashlight on my
(01:52:34):
cell phone on as I go through. And luckily, luckily the other day
when it was trash day, Iwent over there and did you know when
you go into the refrigerator, youstick the whole arm and just just drive
into the trash can. So Idid that, so been able to avoid
anything else from that. But no, it's been a pr nightmare. I
mean it's just been from the beginning. And you know, we're a sports
station, so I don't want tobog people down with it too much,
(01:52:56):
but feel free. No, Imean, you know it's it's one of
those where you know, I seethat Channel eleven caught up with them at
the beginning of all of this.We have all these crews here, but
we have to put them through safetytraining. The hell were you doing for
the last few weeks when you knewthat this was coming. What were you
doing? So it's almost like havinga triage unit but saying, hey,
you know what, medical help ishere and I know that you guys are
(01:53:17):
suffering, but they've got to gothrough training first. No, they need
to be taken care of. They'reelectricians, they can they can handle themselves.
Just tell them where it goes. This is what they're Just have the
instructional videos already watched. We watchedinstructional videos for training here months in advance,
(01:53:38):
So I mean, how do younot have that ready. That's just
a pile of excuses, A giantpile of excuses. Smells like not excuses.
Well, I mean they've been honestlyliving, you know, on scholarship
for the longest time. Yeah, and they probably thought to themselves, like
most people, oh well, thisis just a cat one. It's not
going to be that bad. Well, it is that bad, and now
(01:53:58):
you pretty much found out you havehad no plan. You're trying to build
the you're trying to build the housewhile the foundation is on fire. And
now this is what you get. That's exactly what you get. All right,
I'm gonna make room for Dan.I'm sure he'll pick up right where
we left off, at least forit. Sounds like you've got a little
rant left in you. We'll beback. Thank you all so very much
for listening. It was a catharticman. You help me out right there.
(01:54:19):
I think we're good now from theget right to noon. More storm
coverage coming up here on Sports Talkseven ninety and maybe some astros. I
hope that's good news talk some ofthat. We'll see you later. I'll
be back here tomorrow night, sowill Melvin, and we'll go from there
hopefully powered up. Thanks for listening, everybody, Audios fo
