Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by
American Shooting Centers Guns Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Now here's Doug Pike.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
All right, welcome back the Doug Pike Show on Sports
Talk seven ninety. I haven't been in here in a while. Ben,
it seems like forever. Melbourn, did you miss me?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Man?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
I sure did, Doug Pike, Thank you. I appreciate that.
Melvin Brown, how was your holiday season?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Not bad? Not bad? Everything you wanted under the tree?

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Pretty much pretty much paid for everything that was under there,
no matter who it was going to or from. You know,
we did. I think I'm sure I've talked about it
on the show before. A couple of years ago.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
One of the guys with whom I played golf and a
bunch of old guys out there, older attorney, we were
talking about Christmas about this time of year one, two,
three years ago. I'm not sure, and he said, yeah,
I'm kind of jaded on Christmas now, So why is that?
He said, Well, I looked under the tree and everything

(01:08):
under that tree. And this is this guy with several
children of his own and numerous grandchildren. He's pretty well
loaded down family tree wise, the limbs are just hanging
on by a thread from all the weight.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Think of kids as ornaments in the tree. Well, those
limbs are leaning down hard. There's lots of ornaments in
the tree. And he said, every single thing under there.
It dawned on me that all came out of my pocket,
even the stuff for me.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
So anyway, and that's not to hurt Christmas. That's the
way we're supposed to be providers. We're all supposed to
be providers. And whether there's one or two incomes in
the family, if you're in charge, you're in charge, and
you just got to take the responsibility. I certainly do,
and have for many, many years. And I don't mind
a bit. I really don't.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
It all works out well if my family happy, I'm happy,
right amen? All right? So, and where did you go anywhere?
Did you do anything?

Speaker 5 (02:07):
No?

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I just did a staycation. We stayed in the town. Yeah,
same here. I didn't.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I didn't go anywhere, but I did. I actually ended
up playing more golf than anything else. The way just
the schedules turned out. I did have a duck hunt planned,
but something came up, as it unfortunately does so frequently
this time of year, and I couldn't. I couldn't get
away for that morning, and it killed me, it really did.
I wanted to go back down there. These were some

(02:34):
friends of mine going down to hunt with Mitchell Holder
down there at Waterfowl Specialties, and I wanted to go
back down there. I've gotten out there, I got out
there earlier in the season, and I wanted to make
a return visit because that's where he hunts. Down there
is where this region of the entire state has a significant,

(02:56):
not not tremendous numbers of snow geese, but significant. And
I think one of the differences between long ago and now,
goose wise is that back when I was hunting, they
probably had the same, maybe maybe twice as many geese
in that El Campo area as there are now. But

(03:20):
from El Campo all the way up to Katie and
then all the way up to Hockley, there would have
been another two or three dozen flights of geese, flocks
of geese.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
That big moving around the prairie.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Now you've got that one big bunch down in El Campo,
you might have one or two bunches, smaller bunches scattered
around Katie somewhere. I don't even know if there are
any geese left in Katie. I haven't talked to anybody
out there from a while for in a while, but
that's I guess that's the biggest difference. But I still
like being out there. I still like hearing the birds.

(03:56):
I miss hearing them overnight, which I still had i
was out. I've heard geese overhead one night this whole winter,
and that was it. And it used to be. It
would have been the opposite thirty years ago, twenty years ago.
It would have been one night where you didn't hear
geese maybe, and that would have been only because it
was pouring down rain and you didn't walk outside. Speaking

(04:16):
of the weather, if you're if you don't like the cold,
you might want to just get out and enjoy today
and tomorrow afternoon, because after that just the bottom falls out.
Light freezes overnight for at least the next three nights
after well, starting Sunday night, and high temperatures in the

(04:38):
mid to low forties, which is really gonna open people's eyes.
One of the things I noticed, just a quick aside,
it's not an indoor thing. It's outdoors technically, but people
driving in cars in cold weather Melbourne.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Do you when you are you're going to the car.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
And you're gonna go someplace where you're gonna be outside,
so you got a big old coat on when you
walk out the door, or do you to get to
the car? Do you wear your coat and your mittens
and your stocking cap and all that in the car?

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Well?

Speaker 6 (05:13):
Sometimes that car it's it's colder in the car than
it is outside.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
So yeah, kind of soort of Okay.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Well, here's a tip. Here's a tip. Your car has
a heater and it's gonna take a minute. It's gonna
take a minute to warm up. I'll give you that, okay,
But if you're wearing all of your winter clothes inside
the car, you're gonna just overheat your own body because
now you're in a confined area and your body's gonna

(05:41):
just keep baking, making heat, trying to get it out
of itself, and you're gonna get hot. And then when
you get out of the car back into the cold weather,
it's just gonna feel all the colder and you might
have sweated a little bit, and that's gonna that's gonna
make your face or your hands or your arms damp,
and that's not going to help you in the cold.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
No, that's right. So here's what I do.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Okay, okay, I've been doing this for a long time,
a lot older than you, and hear what I do.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
So I don't have to walk that far to the car.
And if it's a long walk.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
To the car, fine, walk to the car in your coat,
but take it off and get in the car.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Take your gloves.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
I saw a woman this morning bundled up like she
was on the Arctic Circle driving into here. He had
all the stuff on. Take all that stuff off. You
can leave your little hat on if you want to.
That's cute. Take the gloves off, Take the jacket off
and put them in the passenger seat and open them
up to where the inside of the jacket is exposed

(06:41):
to the heater vents on that side. Ah, And when
you get to where you're going and you slip your
arms into that cozy, warm jacket, it will be preheated
for you, just kind of like an oven full of cookies.
Nice it works, man, it really does.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
It really does.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
My bacon, yeah, because if you just take the coat
and wad it up and throw it on the seat
it stays cold inside.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Can't wait till Monday.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
I could, I could, I guarantee you man so anyway,
so we got through it all. I had played more
golf than I probably should have over the holidays. I
had really good intentions of doing more chores than I did.
It's not like I did nothing. I actually did a
significant number of chores around the house that it needed
doing for a little while. And as they say, if

(07:31):
you want a man to do a chore around the house,
he'll get around to it. You don't have to remind
him every six months. Anyway, moving forward, one of the
things that's gonna happen as we move into what we're
about to move into is the animals. The land animals
are going to be moving around a lot more, and

(07:53):
that means for deer hunters, they're finally going to get
out of that camouflage sauna they've been sitting in for
month and a half or so and maybe get a
good chance to see some big deer moving South.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Texas.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Rut's going on, so you know there's gonna be moving
down there even when it's warm. But the problem with
with cold or with warmer days is that the deer
aren't just aren't as active in the in the middle
of the day, afternoon it gets up to seventy five
eighty eighty five ninety degrees.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
It's done a couple of times in South Texas in
the last week or so.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Holy cow, man, You know, if you were out there,
you wouldn't want to be running around chasing, chasing anybody.
Sunday night, it's gonna change. Sunday night, it's gonna change.
Those deer are gonna be up. They're gonna be moving.
They're gonna be have to feed more more often and
eat more when they do feed, so they're gonna be
moving around and going into the tail end of deer season.

(08:50):
It's gonna be it's gonna be a good time to
be out there. Let me go get doctor George on there.
Hold on, what's up, doc? Good morning man, Happy New year.

Speaker 7 (09:00):
Y'all are having heart failure over mid forties. What are
you gonna do when it gets cold?

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Sho man, I'm just prepping for the cold. I know
I can deal with cold.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
I really can. But I'm gonna prep for it.

Speaker 8 (09:15):
You know.

Speaker 7 (09:16):
I was raised in Wyoming and Colorado to us about
thirteen or fourteen. I never heard the term. I never
heard the term windshill factor until I got to the South.
And I'll tell you. I went to a rodeo in
Angleton that was about the first week of January. It's
probably been ten or twelve years ago. And it got

(09:37):
about dark, and that wind was and I remember the
weather man said we got thirty to thirty five to
two mile an hour gust. And remember thirty five of
his tropical storm, That's right. So I kind of layered
up with some of the Yeah, I was kind of
layered up with some of the ski gear. And I
mean those cowboys were bundled up and Parker's and hiding

(09:59):
around corner. And it got about dark and I was
loading the horse up and it was cold, yeah, buddy,
And so I got in the truck and the thermometer
in the truck said fifty degrees.

Speaker 9 (10:11):
That was the cold.

Speaker 7 (10:12):
That was the coldest fifty degrees I'd ever seen in
my whole Wow.

Speaker 10 (10:16):
Man.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Yeah, that the wind definitely makes a difference. But I
don't pay that much attention to win factor because if
I'm clothed right, I'm not exposing my skin to much
wind and whatever I've got on as an outer layer
is just gonna shut down that that penetration of that
colder air.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
It's not just gonna come at you like little icy bullets.

Speaker 7 (10:38):
Yeah, and uh you know, historically, uh, cold weather gear
was wool, yeah, because it would wick, it would wick
moisture away from you, and you wanted to stay away
from cotton. And then they started with these technical fabrics,
these synthetic fabrics that are really pretty slickly have surprisingly yeah. Yeah,

(11:02):
but uh, I'm involved in a in a case of
a dog over heating and uh, you know, they get
rid of heat differently than we do.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
Right.

Speaker 7 (11:13):
It's if it's one hundred degrees outside and you're in
a swimming pool and you get out wet with you know,
five or ten mile an hour breeze, you get cold.

Speaker 9 (11:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (11:24):
Yeah, that's that's the latent heat of evaporation, and that's
how we cool. But the dogs breathe there in and
then breathe it out, and that core body temperature is
how they expel heat. But when their body temperature is
one hundred and two hundred and two and it's a
you know, ninety five degrees and humidity, there's nowhere for

(11:46):
that heat to go.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, they're just they're just exchanging equal temperature air back
and forth.

Speaker 7 (11:52):
Think think of it as a liquid. It's going to
have to flow downhill.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Yeah yeah, yeah, that's what I think a lot of
people don't understand that about dogs. I think because they're
they're panting that they're they're cooling themselves. But if the
air they're breathing is the same temperature as their bodies,
there's no improvement being made.

Speaker 7 (12:11):
It's got nowhere to go.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, man, oh man. I preach that every year around
the opening a dove season.

Speaker 10 (12:18):
Yep.

Speaker 7 (12:19):
And what I'll see is that what I'll see is
that weekend warrior. You know, the weather's great, Uh, bundle up, fidoh,
and off we go for a run. And the next
thing you know, you're in trouble with the heat stroke.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
Wow. Yeah, that's not good either. What what? Yeah? What?

Speaker 3 (12:33):
What percentage of hunters do you think really understand how
their dogs work? I think hunters have a much better
understanding than the average pet owner. But still, do you
see a lot of heat stroke and stuff in dogs?

Speaker 9 (12:47):
Uh?

Speaker 7 (12:47):
Not, not not as much anymore. When when you do
see it, it's unfortunate. Oh yeah, about ten, about eight
or ten or maybe twelve years ago, there was a
report of a Houston area police officer forgot his dog
in the car. Now, that man, that man knew everything.

Speaker 9 (13:06):
There was to know.

Speaker 7 (13:07):
That was just a dumb accident. And you're going to
hear about children every so often getting forgotten in the car.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (13:16):
And about the time that local officer left his dog
in the car, there was a report of fifteen highly
trained military dogs here in Houston being transported up to
International Airport. It was a shift change. They left all
fifteen of those dogs in that truck and they all

(13:37):
died of heat.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Yeah, oh my god.

Speaker 7 (13:41):
That and they were asking for me and in a
half dollar settlement, I thought, well, fifteen dogs at one
hundred grand copy that that sounds about right.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Yeah, it does takes a lot to train well.

Speaker 7 (13:54):
And in two thousand and three there was a heat
wave in Europe. Forty five thousand people in Europe died.
I those directly related to heat prostration. You know that
last hurricane we all ran from ten or twelve years ago,
fifteen years ago. The old folks overheated.

Speaker 8 (14:13):
Man, oh man, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
All right, well I can't believe we got we got
from bundling up to heat strokes, but we did, Douc.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
Thanks man, I appreciate the call this morning, Buddy Man
for New Year.

Speaker 11 (14:26):
Audio, Happy Doug.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
All right, all right, we gotta take a little break ninety.

Speaker 12 (14:32):
This is Sports Talk seven ninety Houston, Sports online at
sports seven ninety dot com.

Speaker 13 (14:38):
Back back to the Doug Pike Show.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
Sevens winning on Sports Talk seven ninety The Doug Pike Show,
the first show of the new year.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
And thank you all for joining me here.

Speaker 14 (14:48):
I was.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
It seemed like I was out forever. It really did.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
There were chunks of weekdays, and then it was a
big chuck of weekdays, and then I was out for
the weekend just one and then had big chuck week
days again, and I got kind of semi back in
the saddle with Thursday and Friday editions of fifty plus.
And now now I'm kind of into the routine. And
I was sleeping so well.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
This morning Melbourne.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
Oh man, hmm, I just sleeping like a baby. And
then man, man, get up, get up. I don't know, yeah,
I need to get a different alarm. I think, all right,
let me go, I gotta get this thing working there.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Let me go talk to Rick, Rick, thanks for hanging on, buddy.
Happy New Year.

Speaker 10 (15:29):
Man being to you. I'm just gonna talk to you
talking about the you know, clothes and get them. Yeah,
you know the close thing. I'm with you one and
fifty percent. Normally, what I do is if I'm gonna
go hunting somewhere where I'm gonna have to be tennis,
I'm not walking. I'm in a duck line, a line

(15:51):
or whatever, I'll take even my boots off. I lay
everything in my truck and I don't hear that truck
up very much. I don't want to sit there and shape.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Oh no, no no.

Speaker 10 (16:04):
And when I get to my destination, I mean I
may even crack the windows a little bit and let
it as I get closer, and this let me start
cooling off a little more. And then as soon as
I get there, then I get out. It's cold. I
put everything on and I'm trying to eliminate the sweat.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Absolutely, yeah, you got to do that now.

Speaker 10 (16:25):
The only thing that gets me when it's cold is
cold wind or eat me up. But there's a cure
for that. Go to the ski section and Academy and
buy you some under armor.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Yet a good lord, underwear is worth its weight in gold.

Speaker 10 (16:45):
Well, this stuff is steing as a lady's hold. I mean,
you wouldn't believe it, but it's a wind blocker period.
It's done over no win. So anyway, that's just what
I do is go ahead.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
So you got a really fine tune what you're putting on,
because if you put on too much and you start sweating,
just like you're talking about a lot of my goose
hunters when I was guiding, they would bundle up because
it was thirty eight degrees outside, and we'd walk two
hundred yards through a muddy rice field to get to
where we were gonna set up.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
And then we'd set up that whole spread.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
And by the time I'm taking the decoys out of
the bags, my jacket's already off, my shirt's unbuttoned. I'm
I'm trying like hell not to get wet from sweat,
because that's the enemy, is that moisture. Because that moisture,
if it's stuck to your skin and you start getting
cooled down, it's just gonna cool you down all the faster.

Speaker 5 (17:41):
Man.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
Yeah, I'd well, I'd just be stripped down tott to
put on shorts some mornings if it was, if I
could have, because it was just so warm. Your body's
generating so much heat that you end up causing yourself problems.

Speaker 10 (17:54):
My too. I don't have one, but my two boys do.
If you've seen these battery fowered heat vest.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Yeah, I have.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
And I'm hesitant to go to those because if I'm
sitting out in that blind and if I'm sitting in
the deerstand half of you know, two hundred yards three
hundred yards from the truck, and there's there's movement all
around me, and those batteries die.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Now what have I got?

Speaker 15 (18:17):
Now?

Speaker 2 (18:18):
I'm now, I'm so I don't want to be Now.

Speaker 10 (18:21):
What they do is they don't put them on walking
out to their duck glass right. Uh you know, when
they get there, they put it on if they feel
like they need it, and then when they're walking out
or putting out their spread, they take it off. And uh,
it's it's the coolest thing that ever was.

Speaker 11 (18:37):
I warn it.

Speaker 10 (18:38):
I was kind of hoping I might get one of
those for Christmas, but I didn't didn't hear enough. But
I'm gonna I am. Speaking of Christmas, I'm gonna tell
you what I bought all of my family, okay, okay,
real quick. For years, for several years out on these
ranches that you know what I do for a living,
order I get the less I'd like to go on
these big places by myself. And one of the reason

(19:01):
is I'm I always worry for whatever reason, my dad
dumb truck won't start, okay, and I'm just stuck. And
I bought several years ago a thousand am hordrible battery charger.
Oh yeah, plugs into a cigarette ladder. I'm looking at.
It's in the back seats, plugged in it. It will work.

(19:23):
You can unplug it. It'll start your truck for two
or three days unplugged. And if you've got all the
plug ins for all your electric devices in your phone
or whatever, you know, like if your batteries dead, like
this morning, I had really gave some hard thought about
going coming up there and going crow hunting. I left

(19:43):
my led lights on my truck last night. Oh boy,
you know the little ones underneath your head, like sure,
and I can just turn those on them. And I
like it because if I'm going to ease in somewhere
that I want to be able to see the road
in the dark. I can, and I don't have to.
Don't lie everywhere on everybody. And tomorrow I may talk

(20:04):
about another light thing that I.

Speaker 9 (20:06):
Did get, but.

Speaker 10 (20:10):
It's just uh, you can get them at O'Reilly's. They're
not expensive and they are just the just unplug your
cigarette lighter. You popped the hood charge of Barry. Ma'am
you're run and running.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Hey man, that's good stuff there, Rick.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
I got to go catch Mike before I get off
to this break, but that's really good.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
Audios. I mean, go, thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
See, hey got that guy's got so many good ideas
because he's outdoors a lot. The more you're out there,
the more where you are of what you need and
don't need, well you have to carry him where you
don't have to carry and and what you need in
case of a problem. That's where a lot of people
get in trouble is they don't think about what they

(20:55):
might need and why they might need it, and if
they for example, when I said, what if the truck
doesn't start, that's a major issue. If you're on a
ranch somewhere half a mile or two miles or three miles,
even on a really big ranch or whatever. From help

(21:15):
and if you end up having to walk back and
you just planned on riding around the ranch one time.
Real quick, you turn the car off or truck off,
jump out, do whatever you had to do, and then
jump back in and you're in trouble.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
That's good. Oh my boy, you're there. That cleikdy clickity click,
Hey Mike, what's up?

Speaker 13 (21:39):
Man?

Speaker 7 (21:40):
You need to catch your break a hold?

Speaker 2 (21:42):
No, come on, talk.

Speaker 16 (21:44):
Tell me how much you miss bending over picking up
bruising rags.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
Oh my god, if there's a just pick a number
below zero and I'll tell you. Peeling off that big
white parking pounds, Oh my god, man, I don't miss that.
I know, and you know it was.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
It was just necessary to put out those big spreads.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
And it was such.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
A relief when we finally got away from cloth and
went to banquet cloth, that thin plastic, because boy, when
they're dry and fresh and brand new, and you can
put three hundred of them in a bag easy and
just toss it over your shoulder like a little like
a little knapsack full of snacks.

Speaker 2 (22:32):
It didn't weigh anything. But then you get out.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
There and the moisture gets on them, and little mud
gets on a few of them, and you shove those
same three hundred rags back in that sack and it
feels like it's just full of bowling balls.

Speaker 2 (22:48):
You need help getting that bag in the truck. Oh sure,
well don't.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
You brought back a really bad memory from the time
when I tried to lift a bag of wet rags
out of the back of my pickup truck down in Sealy,
and as soon as I tried to pay, I was
just leaning over the edge of the of the side
of the truck, grabbed that bag and picked up and
my whole back just exploded this uugh, and that I
couldn't even stand up for about like three or four minutes.

Speaker 11 (23:16):
You need a swamper, oh yeh.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Every now and then.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
Most of the time we had them, and I usually
had enough guys with me that we could all kind
of get it all out there.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
And I wasn't that old.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
I'm telling you, man, It's just that was just stupidity
on my part.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
And well, really it was not stupidity.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
It was ignorance as much as anything else, because up
to that very moment, I still thought I was bulletproof,
and I probably wasn't. Twenty six twenty seven years old
at that and one long move.

Speaker 8 (23:49):
How many days after the hunt did it take for
your bones to warm up?

Speaker 14 (23:53):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Oh yeah, oh that Yeah, that was tough too.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
You know, we almost got kind of numb to it
when I was guiding, because we were out there every
single day, and you just you get, like I said,
you get prepared.

Speaker 2 (24:05):
You know what to prepare for.

Speaker 3 (24:07):
And I almost half the time when I was out
there walling around on little rice levies, I would I
didn't want to wear waiters because they got too hot,
so I'd wear hip boots and then try to just
make sure that I was leaned over as I was
calling birds or whatnot, just leaned over on my plastic
park and so I didn't get moisture from the ground
soaking through my blue jeans and my long Johns.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
And nine times out of ten I ended up with
a big, fat wet hip.

Speaker 3 (24:34):
I'm left handed, I'm laying on my right side, and
I'd just be calling and calling away, thinking I was
lying on plastic, and then I'd feel all that moisture
hit that hip and.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
I was a goner.

Speaker 9 (24:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
Yeah, Happy New Year.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
To you too, Mike. Thanks for the call, buddy. Oh yeah,
holy cow. I had so much fun in those rice fields,
but there were days when the conditions just made it miserable.
And I I can think of four or five days
that really come to mind that were just brutally cold
and windy, and.

Speaker 2 (25:10):
You end up.

Speaker 3 (25:10):
One time, I was totally unprepared because the forecast and
a lot of you have heard this story before. I
had a man and his two grandchildren and his son.
So there's a grandpa, there's dad, and then there's little boy,
little girl. And we went down to Sealy to do
a hunt and put out a nice big spread of

(25:34):
farm form decoy, so it had a lot of snows
and a bunch of Canadas and we were good to go.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
Man, it was a pretty good little spot. Should have
been good anyway.

Speaker 3 (25:44):
And there was a front coming, which I thought was great,
but it wasn't supposed to show up until about somewhere
like an early afternoon, and.

Speaker 2 (25:53):
I knew we'd be out of there by about nine
thirty or.

Speaker 3 (25:55):
Ten, and that front decided it was in a hurry,
and we were out there in sixty eight seventy degree
weather just oh, this is lovely, And all of a
sudden I look behind me and there's just this big
dark line of clouds coming.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
And then the wind shift happens.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
The wind shifts from very light from the southeast to
twenty to thirty from the north, and my farm forms
start because they're all backwards.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
Now to the wind.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
My farm forms start lifting up and tumbling across the field.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
This is a kind of halfway dry.

Speaker 3 (26:34):
It was hard ground, but moist enough to get the
decoys in anyway. And now all these decoys are lifting
up and flipping down the whole field.

Speaker 2 (26:44):
And then it starts to rain a little bit, and the.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
Dad, not the grandpa, The dad says, what about this weather?

Speaker 2 (26:51):
I said, I think we can do it.

Speaker 3 (26:53):
We can hang out here, and there's enough bird flying
around we'd probably do a little bit of good. And
the dad and the little boy decided to go wait
in the car while Grandpa and I and my dog
and his granddaughter stuck it out and actually ended up
getting a few more birds. It was kind of fun,

(27:13):
but boy was it hard on me because I had
to just let them go without picking up those decoys.
I couldn't they they had half of them had made
it all the way to a fence line.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
That was about it.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
At least a quarter mile maybe a little bit more away.
And it took me all afternoon to pick all that
garbage up. It took me all afternoon. My dog just bailed.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
He bailed on me.

Speaker 3 (27:34):
He ducked down into a culvert in a little ditch
we were laying in and they found a concrete culvert
and backed into there. Said, I'm not coming out until
I hear that truck. All right, we gotta take another
little break. We are Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 10 (27:48):
Are you ready?

Speaker 12 (27:49):
Listen online at sports seven ninety dot com. Now more
Doug Fike.

Speaker 3 (27:54):
All right, welcome back seven thirty nine on Sports Talk
seven ninety to Duck Pike Show. I'm glad to be back,
glad to be here, glad to hear from all of you.
I hadn't heard from you, and gosh, I only took
one weekend off, and I feel like I was out forever.
And the dumb thing that I did this past year
was leave ten vacation days on the table.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
I've already told Melvin I'm not doing that this year, and.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
I'm just kind of I'm almost giddy with excitement to
see how I pull this off, because I do have the.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
Days now there's going to be a I think my
son and.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
I are going to make a couple of campus visits
during spring break, which is whooh, that's really fun for me,
but it's important for him, So I'll go do that,
and I would like to there's a couple of fishing
trips I want to make during the year before next winter.
Usually I just take lumps of time at Thanksgiving and Christmas,

(28:44):
but I'm gonna try to take a few days here
and there, and I'll try to avoid actually, I'll try to.

Speaker 2 (28:49):
Avoid the weekends.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
I'll just choose weekdays and that may that'll wind up
better for me because I'll be able to go fishing
or hunting or wherever I'm going at a time when
it's not typically crowded. They stay away from the weekend crowds,
and then I'll also be able to be back in
here to do the show, which is important to me.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety Email

(29:14):
me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. I've got an email
from a guy who has been showing pictures of his
new chocolate Lab puppy, and he is I cannot tell
you how I can already tell how excited. Scott is
is Captain Scott and all to have that dog, And
I would be too if I had a dog like that.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
It's pretty dog on cool.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
He's posted a lot of pictures and he's getting some
good ones, and I think he's already developed, like a
giant brigade of people who are gonna just watch this
dog grow up.

Speaker 2 (29:46):
Although he did. He sent me a picture of the dog,
this little.

Speaker 3 (29:50):
Tiny, little female chocolate lab with his grandson and both
of them kind of looking at each other. And and
I send him back a note I said, tell me
again whose dog this really is, because I gotta hunch
those two are gonna be thickest Steeves. He also just
sent me a picture. The reason I bring his name up.

(30:12):
He sent a picture of what he describes as the
largest deer on the place. And I would have to agree.
I haven't seen a buck like that running wild in
a long long time.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
Holy mackerel.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
I don't know who's got that one in his sights
this morning maybe, but there'll be a phone call made
to a taxidermist shortly after that thing hits the ground.
Mercy Sakes Mojo, Good morning, Good morning, and happy New
Year to Mojo and every one of you who have
supported me through. This is our twenty fifth year with

(30:50):
this show, Melvin, could you believe that?

Speaker 2 (30:52):
Wow? Twenty? I know. Do you get a watch or
something or go a I got to watch other people
get one. How does that count? Yeah? Yeah, well you
long overdue, you know. You know Brad Schwise Actually he
gifted me a watch back around my birthday time and

(31:15):
that was very nice of him. And it's it's a beautiful,
beautiful time.

Speaker 11 (31:19):
Pee.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
I think I have it on, Yeah, I have it
on today? Ly there see that? See that?

Speaker 7 (31:24):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (31:24):
Wow?

Speaker 10 (31:24):
I know?

Speaker 2 (31:25):
Man, God is Sparkle. Yeah, it's Sparkles. Yeah it's cool man.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
Oh mercy, let me look it back at my paytret. I.
I just don't even know where I want to go.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
Just shit.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
Oh, I'll tell you one thing I do want to do.
I want a little feedback from you guys. I'm working
on a story and the deadline is fast approaching, so
help me if you can.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
I'm working on.

Speaker 3 (31:43):
A story about the changes to our trout limits. Okay
we were. When I was growing up, it was just
how many ice chests do you have in the boat
that you can fill up with? Little trout or bigger trout.
Actually there back before there were there were also so
many trout of most sizes in the bays around here

(32:08):
and all the way down the coke. We had seven
hundred something miles of coastline and there are tons of trout,
and back when I was growing up, they could just
catch them till you got tired of fishing, kind of
like white bass back in the day as well, when
the people on Livingston and most of the Southeast Texas
Lakes could go out, go up a creek somewhere, or
get out over a hump in the middle of the lake,

(32:28):
depending on the time of year, and just catch one hundred,
two hundred, three hundred And unfortunately, a lot of those
fish wound up in dumpsters because most are not well.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
I won't say most.

Speaker 3 (32:41):
Some of the people who were out there catching that
many fish also were out there drinking that many beers.
And by the time they got back to the cleaning
table and cleaned six or seven of them, and they
were tired and they were sleepy, and they didn't want
to be cleaning fish anymore, and so they would throw
them away.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
And I hope that's not still happening. At all.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
I'm concerned that that might be happening still in isolated
pockets of the state, but by and large, we've become
better aware of the importance of limiting our take home
on these consumptive resources, and that's what they've done with trout.
Now you can only keep three and they have to

(33:25):
be within that little what is it, fifteen to twenty
inch slot. The record book is still open because you
can get an annual tag. Then it's and it comes
on an entire sheet of hunting or fishing license paper
that you got to hang and drag around with you.
What I did was just cut the I cut the
tag out and stableed it to my license.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
And I.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
Am very confident that'll hold up because the transaction is
recorded anyway. The bottom line is I'm working on this
story on how this change is going to impact both
short term and long term the big trout fishery in Texas.
Not how many, not how many sixteen and seventeen inch

(34:12):
fish we're going to catch in two or three years,
but how many fish in the twenty call it twenty
six in up class twenty six and up.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
How many of those are going to be out there
in a few years.

Speaker 3 (34:25):
When we can only keep one, and that one most
of the people I know at least aren't going to
keep anyway. I have no intention whatsoever of killing a
trout anymore. And if I caught one tomorrow that was
three feet long thirty six inches long, there's a really

(34:47):
good and fat as a toad. Just you could just
the belly with on that fish. It Hey, it's my dream, Okay,
it can be as fat as I want it.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
The belly on that fish is just blown up and
you can feel big mullet inside it.

Speaker 3 (35:00):
It's been eating and fattening up for winter. And holy cow,
this fish is three feet long.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
I'm let it go.

Speaker 3 (35:09):
I'm gonna take pictures. I'm gonna take pictures right up
until the time that fish starts to look like, hey,
I gotta get back in the water or I'm dying.
And I might take pictures of it in the water.
I might jump in the water with it. I might
pet it like a little kitten. I don't know, But
if it's a three foot trout, it's gonna take some
time for the pictures to get taken.

Speaker 2 (35:28):
Carefully, I make sure.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
The fish is still got access to oxygenated water, but
then I'm gonna let it go, and maybe somebody else
who really cares about records might catch it after that,
and they would get the state record, and I would know,
and the picture person who takes the pictures would know
that that's the fish I caught. I did see something

(35:53):
years ago about a guy who was not tagging fish,
but marking them so that they would be easily identifiable
down the road.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
And the simple thing he did.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
And Doc, if you're still listening, and this is a
bad idea for any reason whatsoever so far as a
fish's survival rate, let me know. But a simple paper
hole punch, just one of those little one hole punch things.
He carried one in his boat, and when he caught
a particularly big fish, he would just he would raise

(36:27):
the dorsal.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
Fin and god, I leave my throat's got a little
tickle in it.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
And before he would release the fish, he'd raise that dorsal,
spread it open in between the first and second spines,
just slide that little hole punch down about a half
an inch into that that fin, that thin part, and
just click, just put a little round hole in it.
I can't imagine that would hurt the fish. I really can't,

(36:53):
but it would identify it at least if he ever
caught it again. And I asked him one time, have
you ever caught any of those fish that you that
you clip like that goes? Nope, never have. Nobody's ever
told me they caught one. But he was doing it
just in case. And what what fun it would have
been do to pick up a fish one day and
flip that spine. I was like, Oh, there's already a

(37:14):
hole that I've already caught you. I'm not putting another
hole in your fin all kinds of ways we can
enjoy big trout. And I'm kind of curious as to
what you guys think about this limit, what you think
it's gonna do in the short The short term result
has already. I think there are a lot of the
people who are closest to the pulse of our base system.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
I'm am I really super late, melboyn.

Speaker 3 (37:40):
No man, I'm gonna take the break so we have
a little time before the top of the hour, and
then when we come back, I'm a I'm gonna definitely
stick with this for a minute because I want some
feedback from you guys on now that we're several months
into it. What you're witnessing out there? I need guy.
If you're a guy and you want to talk, I'd
love to hear from you. If you're a regular old

(38:00):
fishermen and you're still struggling to catch tro out, I
want to hear from you.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
Your rockets and astros live here.

Speaker 13 (38:07):
We are Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 12 (38:10):
The conversation continues this as The Doug Pike Show.

Speaker 3 (38:14):
Seven fifty five on Sports AFT seven nine, The Doug
Pike Show Cow. This is gonna be a short segment
on Melvins. I did go a little long in that
last one. Oh my word, sorry about that. Uh okay.
By the way, don't forget if you are paying attention
to this rejoined music that Melboyn's put together, you will
have a chance later in the program if you can

(38:35):
stick around to.

Speaker 2 (38:37):
And we'll do it well.

Speaker 3 (38:38):
It's gonna be done on Saturdays, and it's gonna be
done after nine thirty.

Speaker 2 (38:43):
Somewhere between nine thirty and ten.

Speaker 3 (38:45):
We're gonna play Melvin's Jellies and jams and Jellies. I
guess jams should come first since it's musically related. Each
of these rejoins has a theme. If you put them
all together. There's a theme involved, and if you know
that theme then you will win. And boy, these packages
are nice.

Speaker 2 (39:05):
Four jars of.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
Custom delicious gourmet jellies and jams and sauces that they
make several dozen different kinds. Mike Mercado was nice enough
to put together some gift packs.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
And if you can tell us.

Speaker 3 (39:24):
What the what the theme is to today's rejoins, you'll
win one of those.

Speaker 2 (39:30):
Come down here and pick it up.

Speaker 3 (39:31):
And if I'm in the building and not on the air,
I'll come out and say hi and thank you for
listening to this show too.

Speaker 2 (39:38):
I know it's good stuff. It's i'm stuff dipped into
the jars that he gave me, and I'm still wondering
if I'm ever gonna get to one that's not good.

Speaker 3 (39:51):
This all depends on what you want, and I'll tell
you more about them later.

Speaker 6 (39:56):
They tickled a palette, they tickled at so delicious, Holy cow.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
Well they do that, and what they do is they
enhance other dishes.

Speaker 2 (40:03):
And Mike is great.

Speaker 3 (40:05):
If you'll call him, if you'll ask him, go down
to his store in Rosenberg and call her, ask him
about him, and he can tell you exactly what pairs
best with with Venison backstrap or what pairs best with
UH chips? Or he's got the jellies? Man, that jelly that.

Speaker 2 (40:23):
He gave me.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
He gave me one of these multi berry, super delicious,
incredible jellies, and it just makes everything else on the
shelf and the stores look kind of pale.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
It really does. The flavors just incredible.

Speaker 6 (40:37):
I don't think I got that one. Wait a minute,
maybe I'll have to get I'll talk to him. Yeah, see,
I I'll see what I can do. I'll try to
hook you up. Yeah, I'll try.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
You're doing all the you're doing all the heavy lifting
on this game.

Speaker 3 (40:51):
Anyway, you deserve at least something. I'll maybe I'll bring
you one of mine. Maybe Mike's listening. Maybe Mike's listening,
who knows, who knows? I might have just ring him up.
By the way, I have to give credit where it's due.
When I talked earlier in the program about this being
my twenty fifth year to do this show, Dan wighed
in and reminded me, and.

Speaker 2 (41:12):
I should have known I did well.

Speaker 3 (41:14):
I wouldn't have known exactly when he started listening, but
he recalls when I first started he recalls when I
first started and listening from day one all the way
to now, and that means so much to me, It
really does. There's been a lot of people who couldn't
put up with me for twenty five years.

Speaker 2 (41:35):
My wife's guiding by nine.

Speaker 3 (41:36):
She's I think, well, this will be our yeah, good lord,
this will be our thirty fifth wedding anniversary.

Speaker 2 (41:43):
But it's later in the year. It's not now, but
it's coming up.

Speaker 3 (41:48):
So she's the only one who's who tolerated me for
any longer than any of you have. But yeah, if
you've been around for a long time, by all means,
let me know. And as always, if there's anything that
you want me to talk about on this show, I
talk about this on fifty plus as well. If there's
anything you want me to talk about, anything you think
would be a great thing for us to bring up

(42:09):
in this show, by all means, either email me or
call me now.

Speaker 2 (42:13):
I actually got sitting down Melbourne, right. I actually got.

Speaker 3 (42:18):
Will Melbourne to tell andre I get to him after
the break because I don't want to cut him short.
I actually got Will Melbourne to start taking phone calls
for me in fifty plus, which I'm not going to
get as many calls there as here because the topics
are different and it's just a different audience. But if
you listen to that show as well, know that you're

(42:39):
going to be welcome to call there also, and I'll
give you that number when we're over there.

Speaker 2 (42:43):
All right, we do have to take a break here.

Speaker 3 (42:44):
We do have to make sure that we get in
our little official FCC.

Speaker 2 (42:49):
Network rejoined thing and all that. So we're gonna do that.

Speaker 12 (42:52):
Now.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
The Doug Pike Show will continue right after all this.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by
American Shooting Centers Guns Shooting an instruction since nineteen eighty nine.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
Now here's Doug Pike.

Speaker 3 (43:10):
All right, second hour starts now. Thanks for listening. I
really do appreciate that. Seven one three two five seven ninety.
Email me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. I'm sending Captain
Scott and a message asking him whether this giant deer
he sent pictures of is gonna get a free pass
or is gonna get taken by somebody on that ranch
this season. Because it's only three and a half years old,

(43:32):
this thing is carrying.

Speaker 2 (43:33):
A lot of antlers a lot. But it's only three
and a half.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
It would it would make a fantastic It would earn
its spot on any deer hunter's wall, I can assure you.
But it's only three and a half, and you have
to ask yourself what's next. I got to ask myself
why I have it tapped up?

Speaker 2 (43:56):
Andre?

Speaker 15 (43:57):
Here?

Speaker 2 (43:57):
Andre? What's going on?

Speaker 13 (43:58):
Buddy?

Speaker 10 (44:00):
Hey?

Speaker 2 (44:01):
Dog pick I'm the one that won the first weather
Oh the temperature. That's right, you are, aren't you? Holy cow? Oh?
My word? That goes back aways too, doesn't it.

Speaker 13 (44:17):
Man.

Speaker 15 (44:18):
I had a birthday back in the first week of December,
turn sixty.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
Thank God, good for you.

Speaker 15 (44:23):
I haven't been feeling well, but I had a question
all of the gun fire that was going on.

Speaker 2 (44:30):
Over the holiday.

Speaker 15 (44:35):
My grandfather left e a three three British sniper rifle
with the pop up scope. The only thing that is
missing is the bandet that went with it. I have
no idea what happened to that. But do you have
knowledge of the gun and the accuracy?

Speaker 3 (44:57):
Not the shooter, now, what you can do, what the
rifle could do, huh, But just the accuracy of.

Speaker 2 (45:05):
The cut itself. You know, I'm gonna I don't.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
I can't imagine any sniper rifle from any generation being
anything other than highly accurate.

Speaker 2 (45:17):
Now is it? Is it on par with contemporary guns?
Probably not.

Speaker 15 (45:23):
I've had the gun totally reworked, is Christine, it's ready
to go?

Speaker 2 (45:28):
And uh, yeah, it's ready to go. I shot it
one time. Yeah. Uh in Louisiana.

Speaker 15 (45:35):
I went to a funeralom and I said, well, we're
going to be in the country, and so I know
I can. I can shoot it it somewhere and it's
not gonna be close to anybody.

Speaker 3 (45:47):
I thought you were gonna tell me you did a
one gun salute in the parking lot.

Speaker 15 (45:51):
No, no, okay, your job in the I shot in
the why of a oak tree and totally knocked the
limb ball. Oh lord, And I was probably like maybe
seventy yards away.

Speaker 2 (46:08):
Oh my goodness, Andre.

Speaker 15 (46:10):
And that was the first time I ever shot this gun.
So I'm not a gun enthusiast or nothing like that.
So I'm just asking.

Speaker 2 (46:19):
I think I think it's very cool.

Speaker 3 (46:21):
And how you would have to I mean, if you
really wanted to use the gun as a hunting rifle,
for example, you'd have to kind of you probably want
to get some different optics put on it, if that's possible.
I'm not really familiar with a three British Rial three,
but I'm gonna look it up during the next break
and just kind of see what it is. That's a

(46:41):
cool shot of gun. You're just gonna keep it right,
You're not gonna do anything.

Speaker 2 (46:44):
Well, Oh, that's.

Speaker 15 (46:45):
Why my grandfather left it to me, he said, because
I know you will never sell this.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
You're good.

Speaker 15 (46:51):
You just gifted gifted down through the family, you know,
And I knew he had it from a kid. Yeah,
but it's never a privileged to be around guns.

Speaker 2 (47:03):
And my grandfather wasn't in a gun.

Speaker 15 (47:05):
Enthusiast that it was just what he had and he
gifted all of that to me before he left here,
you know.

Speaker 2 (47:13):
So I have all the guns.

Speaker 15 (47:16):
In twelve gays four ten, twenty two pearl handle, revolver
and all of that kind of stuff.

Speaker 2 (47:26):
You know. Yeah, I'm looking. I just want ahead and
looked it up.

Speaker 3 (47:30):
Melbourne Melbourn kind of jumped into my ear a minute
ago and said, that's a.

Speaker 2 (47:33):
Cool looking gun. So I had to go to it
and it is. Boy, I bet it's heaviest lad though,
isn't it. No, it's really really not. Okay.

Speaker 15 (47:41):
I've had I've had two back surgeris right hand surgeries
for copper tunnel. I can literally pull I can pull
that gun up, put it on my shoulder, aim at,
and I can fire it and it.

Speaker 2 (47:59):
Don't hurt like a limb off a tree. But not
the Holy Call? How much did that surprise you? I
was like, oh my word, you know.

Speaker 15 (48:16):
So I'm just trying to find out anybody that's really
gun throughs this that might know about this gun, because
I'm not. You know, I looked it up, but the
shells are hard to come.

Speaker 3 (48:28):
I bet I would recommend the guy to call for
AMMO for that thing. Is either Jerry or JT. K
Down at the Shooter's Corner. Jerry and Jay both are.
Jerry is closer to our ah, Jay's his son and
they are. Jerry's just a gun nut.

Speaker 2 (48:45):
He has been. He's on that store forty something years.

Speaker 3 (48:48):
And if anybody's gonna have that AMMO, they're gonna have it.

Speaker 15 (48:53):
Jerry's corner, shooter, Shooter's corner, Shooters corner.

Speaker 2 (48:57):
Yeah, they're done in Texas City. It'd be worth a drive.

Speaker 15 (49:00):
Th likes City. I've seen that place going fishing.

Speaker 2 (49:04):
A couple probably so maybe.

Speaker 17 (49:06):
So.

Speaker 2 (49:06):
It's just it's a little bit. It's a small store.

Speaker 3 (49:09):
It's a little store in the corner of a little
strip shopping center.

Speaker 2 (49:14):
And it's easy to find.

Speaker 3 (49:15):
You punch it in on your GPS or something, or
do it the old fashioned way.

Speaker 2 (49:19):
Just call them and ask for directions. They'll get you
taken care of me in Shooter's Corner. Yeah, Shooter's corner.

Speaker 15 (49:26):
Hey man, I appreciate you, and I'm gonna talk. I'm
gonna try to get in touch with you offline. So
maybe we could hook up and go fishing.

Speaker 3 (49:36):
Boy, I'm always looking for an excuse to do that.
If I can ever drag Melboyne out of here, I
might bring him with us. Come on, we'll all go.

Speaker 2 (49:44):
Hey, hey, I got some other fishing partners.

Speaker 9 (49:47):
Man.

Speaker 15 (49:48):
We love to fish, man, and and uh that's what
we do, you know.

Speaker 2 (49:52):
So I'm with you, hey man.

Speaker 15 (49:55):
God bless thank God for twenty twenty five. We survive
in twenty four new year. Hopefully things go good for us,
you know it will.

Speaker 3 (50:06):
It's gonna go good for all everybody around me. I know,
I just feel it. I think it's going to be
a really good year, Andre, thank you for the call.

Speaker 2 (50:13):
Man.

Speaker 15 (50:14):
Hey man, he's texts don't get it better, all right, buddy,
I hope you feel better.

Speaker 3 (50:22):
Andrea, it sounds like you've been down a little bit,
so I want to hear some more perk in you.

Speaker 2 (50:28):
Let's go. We've got to get you patched up, buddy.
I'll see by by you know what I think I'm
gonna do.

Speaker 3 (50:36):
I'll text Jerry or Jay during the break here in
a minute and see if I can get AMMO for
that thing. Yeah, it's a World War two, our World
War two sniper rifle.

Speaker 2 (50:48):
I recall seeing something like that in the store when
I was a little kid to win. It came with
a little strap and everything else, and oh man, it
was a little cool.

Speaker 9 (50:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (51:00):
What makes those things a little bit different is that
the extension of that stock all the way down to
the end of the barrel, and it just stabilized it
a little bit more. I'm sure made it. It does
make it a little bit heavier. It adds some weight, clearly,
but not a lot of weight when I'm looking at
it again here. But by and large, they couldn't make
guns too heavy. Whether it was a sniper rifle or

(51:23):
just an infantry rifle or whatever, because the young men
assigned to tote those things into battle didn't need to
be dragging an anchor behind them.

Speaker 2 (51:31):
They needed to be mobile, and they needed an.

Speaker 3 (51:35):
Accurate gun, and this one clearly was what the Brits
decided was a good one. Those pop up scopes are
kind of cool too. I haven't there's not one in
any of these pictures that I've looked at yet, but
they just kind of these rifles had to be very portable,
and with that they just kind of flip up, and

(51:55):
I'm sure the accuracy was greatly diminished by that type
of arrangement, but nonetheless a cool looking gun. That the
magazine on that thing, there's there's a picture.

Speaker 2 (52:09):
Actually, let me see how it's set up.

Speaker 3 (52:12):
Probably five rounds, maybe six, unless it's two sided. I
can't see in this picture whether it's a two sided
magazine or just a single Let me see if I
can open up this one picture, and I can tell
you real quick, No, it opened up to something else
that's not helpful at all. There it is right there. Yeah,
it's five or six rounds. There's five above it. When

(52:35):
it shows as how it loads, and so that's probably.

Speaker 2 (52:38):
What it was.

Speaker 3 (52:38):
Five or six rounds, Which is if you're a sniper,
you don't have to have a lot of ammo. You're
just gonna make one shot from a long ways away
and take care of business on an enemy that you
No matter how many of that enemy is around, you
don't think they're gonna find you.

Speaker 2 (52:56):
So you don't need to just have bookoo ammo with.

Speaker 3 (52:59):
You could walk out with a pocket full of rounds
and take care of business on a day.

Speaker 2 (53:04):
Yeah, you just need one, hit it and quit it.
Just need one, Just need one.

Speaker 3 (53:10):
If you can shoot right, man seven seven ninety email
me Doug Packe at iHeartMedia dot com.

Speaker 2 (53:16):
We got to take a little break here. I am
going to.

Speaker 3 (53:21):
I think I'm good here, Ashlely, you know what I'm
gonna get out of here clean. I'm gonna get back clean.
We're gonna get this new year started. By the way,
if you're interested in helping support this program, you don't
have to call down here. You don't have to call
any number, some national number. You could just call me.

(53:42):
You could well email me. It's it's a lot simpler
and faster. We can start a conversation and I would
love to have if you if you are an honest,
hard working independent business guy, or you work for a
company that you think might benefit from from sharing what
you do with this audience. I'll take it on myself.
Just email me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. We'll take

(54:05):
a little break here. We'll be right back to Dougpike
Show on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 13 (54:10):
Are Sportstock seven ninety.

Speaker 12 (54:11):
Houston Sports where you go with iHeartRadio Now now get
more Doug eighteen.

Speaker 3 (54:20):
On Sports Talk seven ninety Doug Pike Show almost to
the midway point, and Melvin's laying them out there the
musical rejoins if you're paying attention, and you can kick
back in around nine thirty or so, and somewhere between
nine thirty and ten, I'm not sure exactly when we'll
do this, but we're gonna play again for a four

(54:41):
pack of delicious jams and jellys and sauces. The kind
of each one's a little bit different. And you'll get
one of those from Brass River Provisions, and boy is
that good stuff. I'm I'm getting hungry for some reason, Melvin,
I can't understand. I just don't know, you know, between

(55:02):
the coffee and the jams and jellies we're talking about here. Yep,
I do feel a little rumble in the tummy hea too. Yeah, man,
back to when we were talking about it getting cold.
And I still want to I still want to hear
from somebody who's willing to tell me whether they've caught
more fish, more speckled trout, or fewer speckl trout since
the limit change. And I gotta hunch that the average fishermen,

(55:26):
if they're really truthful, this is kind of like golf scores.
The average fishermen, if they're really truthful, is gonna is
going to say that their results haven't changed much. But
what I think that we're gonna see as time moves
on is that the average fisherman is going to catch
a few more fish. Now, bear in mind that the

(55:48):
Texas the across the board number that the Parks and
Wildlife Department has put out for probably, I don't know
the better part of it, at least a decade, maybe more,
is that when when people leave the dock with the intent,
the sole intent of catching speckle trout, they're chasing trout.
That day, the average fishermen catches one, so it really

(56:16):
for the average angler in Texas, and that's not a
knock on the fishing ability of those people.

Speaker 2 (56:21):
It's not a knock on the fishery at all. It's
just that the skill and the weather and.

Speaker 3 (56:28):
The experience and the fishery and all of those things
have to really come together for four guys to go
out and fish for four or five six hours and
catch more than four trout, not each just more than four.
So the stars don't normally line up that much. The

(56:49):
professional guides with whom I've spoken since this happened say
they already feel like there are better numbers of average
size and better numbers of keeper sized trout, even which
is encouraging for the future, and with cautious optimism, they're

(57:10):
also talking about believing, truly believing that they're already seeing
an increase in the numbers of bigger trout. And over
six months, not a lot of trout would have grown
from say twenty three to five twenty five inches or
twenty five to twenty six or seven inches.

Speaker 2 (57:32):
It's not going to happen that fast.

Speaker 3 (57:34):
But the difference, I think is that all of those
twenty two twenty three, twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven
inch trout whatever, are now having to be released, at
least for the people who are fishing legally, and that
is a tremendous encouragement for this fishery because if those

(57:55):
over the course of say six months, with people who
are guided or unguided, people who are good fishermen or
bad fishermen, over the course of six months, there would
have been what a thousand at least trout, say twenty
four inches or better, caught on croakers, caught on lures,

(58:16):
caught on live shrimp, caught on whatever bait was being
thrown up and down seven hundred miles of coastline. That's
a lot of big fish that are still there that
would have been gone had the limit not been altered.
And it's really it's exciting to see where this is
going to take us. Now we have we have weather

(58:37):
anomalies to deal with, and if that happens, it still
gives the advantage to the fishery in that the recovery
will be up to more fish than it would be
had we been taking those let's call it five thousand
big trout. If we'd taken all of them the whole
spring and summer and fall.

Speaker 2 (58:58):
And early winter all the way up to now, since
the the REGs went in.

Speaker 3 (59:04):
I think it was May twenty six last year they started.
They got passed by the Commission back in January, I
think it was back in January, and then went into
effect at the end of March, I believe it was.
And all of those fish are still there, and all
of those fish still being there is a really good thing.
Let me know what you think about it. I don't

(59:25):
have a problem at all. I don't keep that many
trout anyway. I just like to catch them. I love
to catch them. I got a little time for Brian Treadway.
I can do that right now, Brian.

Speaker 2 (59:35):
What's up man? How you doing? Happy New Year?

Speaker 11 (59:38):
Happy New Year. Mister Pike wanted a way in on
the trout topic. I can't say that I've caught less.

Speaker 18 (59:49):
Or more fish since all this, but what it seems
like I've released a lot more oversized trout.

Speaker 2 (59:56):
Yeah, And.

Speaker 18 (59:57):
They talked that I've kind of had here in the
as I don't know ten days, two weeks. The amount
of fish that I've heard that are three two, no,
up to nine pounds that have been released up and
down the coast, upper coast, middle Coast, and lower coast.
It's pretty amazing. There's still lots of big fish out there,
and the spawning bio mass that you're getting from that

(01:00:18):
size quality of fish is really going to start showing
up in the next two years. Yeah, I was against
going to three fish. I did not like the idea.
I never liked the limits being taken away from us.
But I will acknowledge the benefit that we will see
from the fishery over the next few years from the

(01:00:38):
regulation change.

Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
Oh, I couldn't agree with you more.

Speaker 3 (01:00:41):
If we can, if we can avoid or you know
what during the you know what time of year, we
can avoid one of those this this place is going
to just load up fast.

Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
And nature, you've been around this as long as I have. Nature.

Speaker 3 (01:00:53):
Nature has a way of providing the food for all
these fish. It's not like there's going to be nothing
for him to eat. If we need more shrimp, nature
will put more shrimp in there. If we need more
more anything, it's going to be there for them. And
that's and man, they're the most cannibalistic species in the
bay anyway, and so they'll they'll be plenty for those
big trout to eat and I can't wait, man.

Speaker 11 (01:01:15):
I'll tell you.

Speaker 18 (01:01:15):
The one component that a lot of your listeners and
more people need to be aware of, and you're.

Speaker 11 (01:01:20):
Seeing more of it out there over the last few.

Speaker 18 (01:01:22):
Years is the oyster issue that we continue to see
of people taking the wild oysters and they're there. It's
it's almost environmental terrorism or what they're doing at the
bottom of these bay systems. Yeah, there's so few licenses
that that are out there, and the amount of corporations

(01:01:43):
that have now moved into harvest a wild resource is
really doing some serious damage. We are seeing roughly five
to only ten percent of oysters being farm raised.

Speaker 11 (01:01:55):
We need to be.

Speaker 18 (01:01:56):
Kind of pushing more people to it. And I'm going
to tell you right now there's a lot of politics
and what's actually happening.

Speaker 11 (01:02:02):
And all of you need to be very very aware
of who you're voting for right now.

Speaker 18 (01:02:06):
There is a politician down there on the coast, on
the kind of upper coast Galveston towards Anna Whac that
is very much in the pockets of these corporations that
are doing this to you.

Speaker 11 (01:02:18):
Oh, well, do your research, folks.

Speaker 3 (01:02:20):
Good call good call on that. Yeah, that's that that's
going to matter as well, because those fish have to
have someplace to go to where they can rely on
finding food rather than just swimming all over the bay
bottom over nothing but mud and sand.

Speaker 18 (01:02:35):
There's a lot of politics on what we're seeing and
at one percent effects anybody that touches that saltwater. If
those are huge filter feeders, I don't care if you're
a fisherman or not. You need to be very aware
of what these people are doing and how they're destroying
the bottom.

Speaker 11 (01:02:49):
Of the bay.

Speaker 3 (01:02:51):
I'll do more research on it. That's a good topic.
I need to do more on that, I really do.
I got a couple of people I.

Speaker 2 (01:02:56):
Can bring on.

Speaker 11 (01:02:58):
We'll be in touch.

Speaker 2 (01:02:59):
Great stuff. Ran, Yeah, thanks, it's great to hear from
you man.

Speaker 11 (01:03:02):
Happy new Year you as well. Happy year by Boudios.

Speaker 3 (01:03:05):
Let me go get roy so he doesn't have to
wait too long. Royce, what's up, buddy?

Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
Happy new year, Dug, Happy new Year.

Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
Then.

Speaker 7 (01:03:14):
I'm just just got my car.

Speaker 19 (01:03:16):
I'm on the wayco fishing and it's been in a
while and any I was listening to your topic on
the trout and I don't know if you've covered this
part of it or not. But I will say this
because I'm going, I'm going to fish for red fish
this morning.

Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
Is there where I'm at?

Speaker 19 (01:03:30):
And if you look at what the three fish limit
and we've had this limit in place on redfish for
so long now, Yeah, and when I when I go,
it is very commonplace for me to catch twenty five
twenty six thirty inch red fish.

Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
Dang man, where are you going?

Speaker 9 (01:03:46):
Almost?

Speaker 19 (01:03:47):
Yes, exactly, you know, a big, big, solid fish, you know,
and of course you know undersize. But if you look
at what you're that limit, which it's close to what
they've done with trout, that's true. And mind you, the
redfish are a whole lot smartier than what trout come
with freeze and everything. I'm just looking fremely forward to
the future because if it does anything close to the

(01:04:10):
trout population, that it's done for the redfish or population
or our bas system. I mean, it's it's managed just
a there's no where to look but buck Well.

Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
Yeah, you know, you're the first person who's brought that up,
and I'm glad you did because I'm gonna I'm gonna
include that in this piece.

Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
And when I get off the phone. We I'm want
to put your back on hold.

Speaker 3 (01:04:29):
If you want me to credit you with bringing that
up first, I will, but I need to get your
last name, so I'll put you on hold in a minute.

Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
I want to have both your names so I can
use you in the store.

Speaker 8 (01:04:38):
If you don't mind, absolutely appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (01:04:41):
Yeah, let me do that. I'm okay, boy, I'm fired up. Now.
That's a great angle to come at it from. It
really is.

Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
We've had three fish on redfish for quite some time now,
a fairly fairly narrow slot link to for under and over,
and yes, the bays are absolutely full of red fish.
I couldn't agree with you more, and I think right
now you could probably. I think it'd be an easy
argument to make that if you went out fishing for

(01:05:08):
redfish and trout on any given day, you'd have a
lot better chance of catching three red fish than you
would catch in three trout.

Speaker 19 (01:05:16):
Absolutely, and in a trophy slide too, in the twenty
five twenty six to thirty inch category, because I've called
one trout that was twenty nine and a half benches.
That's the longest one I've ever caught that I've caught
counts twenty nine and thirty inch fish, whether they've been redfitch,
whether it's been back in the bios, back in the coves,
or out on the beach run.

Speaker 3 (01:05:35):
So, the craziest redfish story I've heard in a million
years came from my son about I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:05:40):
It was like six months ago or so.

Speaker 3 (01:05:42):
He and a buddy of his were fishing in Buffalo Bio,
north of the Galleria. And the first cast he made,
this kid just took you by and said, man, I
every now and then I come over, catch a bass
or something.

Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
Every now and then, let's go try it. His first cast,
she cast, he caught like a twenty six or twenty
eight inch red fish. I'm not coming. He sent a picture.
I said where are you?

Speaker 3 (01:06:05):
Because I knew he had gone One of his friends
lives kind of up in town, and I knew he
had gone over that guy's house, and I said, where
are you. I'm thinking, man, they drove all the way
to the beach, and he didn't even tell me he
was going.

Speaker 2 (01:06:16):
And he said, I'm kind of over by your office. Dad, Like,
come on.

Speaker 3 (01:06:20):
It was funny, man, but you're exactly right. I'm gonna
put you on hold. I want to do that, Okay, Yeah,
I got to take a break too. Yeah, think hold
on just one second, all right, Melvin, do me a
favor and get Royce's last name, because I got to
credit him with coming up with that. We do have
to take a break, Raymond, if you'll hang on, buddy,
I'll take care of you as soon as we get back,
I promise.

Speaker 12 (01:06:40):
On the way out of this is Sports Talk seven
ninety on the go with iHeartRadio.

Speaker 8 (01:06:46):
Friends.

Speaker 12 (01:06:47):
You've got to try the conversation continues this as the
Doug Pipe Show.

Speaker 3 (01:06:52):
All right, welcome back eight thirty six on spour SOX
seven ninety The Doug Pike Show. Thank you for listening,
Thanks for your input on these new trout rags and
how they are going to impact our fishery. Like I
said earlier, I'm working on a story for Saltwater Sportsman
about that, and I would love some feedback from as
many of you as I can get it from and

(01:07:13):
help me help me write a better story. I'm hearing
what I believed to be the case anyway, and I'm
looking for more. Seven seven ninety. Email me Dog pickyd
iHeartMedia dot com. We'll kick this hour off with Raymond
down in need of them. What's going on, Raymond?

Speaker 9 (01:07:32):
Oh, just enjoy and listening to your show this morning.

Speaker 2 (01:07:35):
That's it. Thank you. I appreciate that, man.

Speaker 9 (01:07:37):
I look, I look forward all week to catching your program.
In fact, if I'm out fishing on a Saturday morning,
I usually bring my radio and put it in my
boat and listen. Tell you why I'm out fishing.

Speaker 2 (01:07:45):
Oh man, thank you a lot. Thanks.

Speaker 9 (01:07:47):
But what I want to talk to you about is
a fishing article I read in Texas Saltwater Fishing magazine.

Speaker 2 (01:07:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (01:07:55):
I don't know if you've if you've seen an article
and not. It was by Joe Richards and it pertains
to flounder and the research is being done here in
Texas own flounder. And the key point in this article
that caught my attention is the fact that they're and
the problem is not just there in Texas. It stretches
all the way up to North Carolina with the flounder,

(01:08:17):
and they're starting to zero in on the fact that
temperature or climate change may have something to do with
the decline and flounder. And it centers around the fact
that the founder, the sex of the founder is determined
when it's between one to two inches long, and the
water temperature, so they're saying that the water temperature is

(01:08:37):
above sixty eight degrees, most of the vast majority of
the flounder are going to be males. And then on
the other hand, here in Texas, we're only allowed to
take a fifteen inch flounder bigger, so it looks like
we're taking and most of the fifteen inches are going.

Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
To be females.

Speaker 9 (01:08:55):
So on one hand, we're taking all the most of
the females out of the water, and Mother nature is
putting mostly mails back into the water, So that obviously
creates a problem. Certainly would I just wanted to mention
that article, Tee. I don't know if you haven't read it,
I sure would like for you to get a get
ahold of it and read it and give your perspective
on the oracle.

Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Yeah, I'll take a look at that. I know Joe Richard.
I haven't known him a long time.

Speaker 9 (01:09:18):
Yeah, I figured you did. He's been around forever.

Speaker 2 (01:09:22):
Oh yeah, holy cow. Yeah, I'll look that up because
I know how to get.

Speaker 9 (01:09:25):
To Okay, do that party here in your faults on it?

Speaker 2 (01:09:29):
Yeah, thank you, Raymond. I appreciate that.

Speaker 5 (01:09:31):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:09:31):
How's your flounder fishing bend? Oh, don't don't hang up yet.
Well how many? What do you think about the trout rules?
Give me that I need.

Speaker 9 (01:09:38):
I listened to your previous caller. I'm like him. I'll
just devastated what I heard there was on cut it
down to three fish. But I have to tell you,
after this past year, you know, I have to agree
with him. They're doing the right thing. I've caught a
lot of speckled trout this summer and a very few
legal ones.

Speaker 13 (01:09:57):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (01:09:58):
I was on one trip by Sabina one day I
called a nice mess of fish. Seven seven specks was
in the group, but not aving legal and park The
biggest one was the thirteen inches. And then another time
earlier this year out in Keith Lake, I must have
probably party of fifty specks and not one single fish
was legal. Wow, So I have to I have to

(01:10:20):
say they're doing the right thing.

Speaker 3 (01:10:21):
Yeah, all those fish are going to have a chance
to be grown ups next year and maybe grace somebody's skill.
It sad for them, but good for going to get them.
Thank you, true Thanks Raymond. Okay, appreciate Okay.

Speaker 9 (01:10:33):
Thanks taking my car. I won't be looking for your
feedback on that article.

Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
Yeah, I'll go for I'll haunt it down.

Speaker 10 (01:10:38):
I will thank you, Okay, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:10:40):
All right, Yeah, I'm gonna go look that up Founder
Texas Salt Water.

Speaker 3 (01:10:46):
I gotta, I gotta jot down. I'm old fashioned, jot
down written notes kind of guy.

Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
I you know it's I can.

Speaker 3 (01:10:54):
I type as fast as anybody does, and that's because
of all the writing I've done over the years. But
when I'm sitting here working like this, instead of jumping
over to my keyboard and opening up a new word
doc and all of that stuff, it's just easier for
me to grab a pen and jot down a few letters.
And I don't want to get to where. I know

(01:11:14):
in the past there have been some tea or some
radio hosts who would you could hear the clicking in
the background when they were type type type type type
in away, trying to get an answer to a question,
or trying to work on something in advance while they
were having a conversation with somebody.

Speaker 2 (01:11:29):
I don't want to do that.

Speaker 3 (01:11:30):
I don't want to be that guy who's trying to
multitask and when I pause every now and then say
hold on, God, i'd write something down.

Speaker 2 (01:11:38):
You'll catch me. It'll go silent for a couple of
seconds because I don't like to.

Speaker 13 (01:11:42):
Well, you can't.

Speaker 3 (01:11:43):
Your brain is not capable of multitasking. You can't focus
on two tasks at once. Well you can try, but
you're just toggling back and forth at shorter intervals. But
you're still only doing one thing at a time. Now
I can walk you gum, I want.

Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
I don't know if that counts or not really seven
one three two one two five seven ninety Email on me,
Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com. I'm fired up.

Speaker 3 (01:12:08):
I may just I may just get this whole story
finished today. I might get it finished today. That would
be really good. And if I do it well, I
think it's going to run in I want to say
April maybe somewhere in there.

Speaker 2 (01:12:22):
Let's go see what's going on with Derek. Hey, Derek,
what's up man?

Speaker 9 (01:12:27):
Not much, Doug.

Speaker 14 (01:12:28):
I just wanted to pass on a couple of things
about that rifle that the gentleman called in earlier.

Speaker 11 (01:12:33):
Day thrill three.

Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
That's Andre's rifle. Yeah, what you got?

Speaker 14 (01:12:37):
Yes, sir, I have one of those, but I have
the issue poll of the two A the one he has.
Those rifles. You can hunt with them, but you'd probably
have to reload, you know, to get some better bullets
in the thing. Okay, so what they're knowing for is
having very slick, very fast actions. Oh wow, okay, Okay,
I have one from nineteen sixty seven. It's uh, the

(01:13:01):
Indians made it. This call an issue pour two A
three eight, So so it's it's it's in the seven
six two five one is the chamber actually, so it's
I can definitely help with it because you know three
has a wide range of bullets. But uh, he could
have some fun with that thing, shooting it and learning
about it because the action. Man, it's it's known for

(01:13:22):
being very fast and very slit one of the best
boat action rifles of well because it was before World
War Two.

Speaker 2 (01:13:32):
Yeah, but man, he could, uh he could.

Speaker 14 (01:13:34):
Really go have some fun with that thing if he
could find AMO. The Amo is kind of.

Speaker 3 (01:13:39):
H I haven't had a chance to check with Jerry
and Jay to see if they have it. I'm gonna
make a note to myself right now to do that.

Speaker 14 (01:13:46):
Yeah, but I think the gentleman would have some fun
with it, and I just wanted to pass that on.
How good the action is.

Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
I love mine so far, the only thing Andre's killed
with his three oh threes in oak Tree. Yes, sir, Yes, sir,
y'all have a great Yeah, thanks Derek. I love when
this happens. Thank you, Derek. I appreciate that.

Speaker 9 (01:14:03):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
This is how it's supposed to work.

Speaker 3 (01:14:06):
It's so man, My audience knows so much, and together,
I think we could pretty much solve the whole world's problems.

Speaker 2 (01:14:15):
Melboyn. We just cut everybody loose and just say, okay,
let's talk about this today. We'd fix it. Whatever's broken.
Where are you thinking? Yeah? Well, you know, I told
mister Johnson Andre that as soon as I put that
on air about his three or threefold that I was
going to get some calls, yeah, other vintage rifles and guns.

(01:14:38):
Sure and sure enough we're getting. Sure enough, we're learning.

Speaker 3 (01:14:42):
That's the beauty for me is that I've been sitting
in this chare for twenty five years, and every single
time I can honestly say that every single time I've
sat here and taken phone calls from this audience or
checked my emails, I've learned something. I've learned something that
at some point we'll share. Sometimes it's the day or
two or a week or three weeks later, whatever, But

(01:15:05):
I'm gonna learn something if I'm sitting in this chair.
And that's one of the reasons I hate to go away.
I hate to go away. I saw that, David. Thank
you for bringing this back up. This is something we're
gonna go off topic. We're gonna go to a different topic, okay,
and one that's very near and dear to my heart. Anyway,
David just sent me a picture that I saw earlier

(01:15:25):
in the week. I don't remember, no, I think I
saw it on Facebook, but I'm glad he sent it
to me because I had forgotten about it. It's a
picture of a little girl holding up a fish that
she's caught, and she has got a smile that just
doesn't stop on her face, the little pigtails in her hair,
and the caption the overline on this thing says parents

(01:15:50):
don't frame pictures of their kids playing video games and
there's a reason for that.

Speaker 2 (01:15:58):
You with me, Melvin, that's the good one. I just
say it is. Yes, Yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (01:16:03):
Can't remember ever going into anybody's house or ever somebody
ever sending me a picture of their kid playing a
video game.

Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
But I have gotten, and.

Speaker 3 (01:16:14):
Received with great joy, a whole lot of pictures of
people with their kids catching their first fish, their second fish,
their biggest fish, shooting their first deer, getting their first duck,
all of these things. Outdoor stuff matters, and you're gonna
see a lot bigger smile on your child's face. If

(01:16:37):
they just caught a fish, then you will. Then if
they just reached a new level in a video game,
all that does is get you wanting to go more
and more and just gets you. It just drags you in.
It doesn't drag me in anymore.

Speaker 2 (01:16:51):
I'll confess, Ben.

Speaker 3 (01:16:52):
For years, when I was back when I was single
and video games were kind of a new thing, I
would try it.

Speaker 2 (01:17:00):
I'd sit down there.

Speaker 5 (01:17:01):
What was it?

Speaker 2 (01:17:02):
Oh, I didn't even remember the name of the game,
Atari twenty sixth hundred. No, it was the one with
the little you had to rescue the princess.

Speaker 4 (01:17:11):
What was that?

Speaker 8 (01:17:12):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:17:12):
My goodness, Uh do you remember that one?

Speaker 3 (01:17:15):
And they just hopping and jumping and just running along
to the just going to the right all the time,
and there's stuff coming at you. From the right and
you have to jump over it and hop over it
and all that stuff. I don't remember that one somebody
will email me and let me know. I can't remember
them systems name of that stupid game.

Speaker 20 (01:17:30):
But I finally got to a point because I had
I wasted so much of my own time, and that,
in hindsight, could have been better spent learning how to
tie flies or or reloading rifle cartridges or whatever, just
going hunting, going fishing, playing golf, whatever, getting outdoors.

Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
And I was just kind of just a bachelor, didn't just.

Speaker 3 (01:17:57):
Sat down with these stupid games and played it until
I could run full speed from start to finish without
ever slowing down because I had memorized all the steps
I needed to go rescue the princess who wasn't even
a real princess. There was not even any benefit to
rescuing the princess, not really, not like rescuing a princess

(01:18:19):
in real life might get a peck on the cheek
for that, but not me. No, I just got to
start over and do it again like a dope. So
just remember that, David. I'm so glad you brought that up, man,
because when I saw it I just told myself, I
need to take care of this. I need to bring
this up over the weekend. And if you have a
picture of your son or daughter, no matter how old

(01:18:42):
they are, with the first fish, for the first deer,
first duck or quail, whatever it is, I'd love to
see it. All of that makes me smile, it really does.
So thank you David for bringing that up, man, I
really appreciate that. Am I late again?

Speaker 2 (01:18:58):
Melvin? Gosh, darn it just there's just so much to
talk about. But it was such a great story. I
mean I jelled with that. Well, good point you jelled
with that? Was that intentional? Yes, definitely until a little.

Speaker 3 (01:19:12):
Reference to Bress River provisions by wish Well jam it perfect.
That's beautiful, man, that's a beautiful thing. It almost brings
tears to my eyes.

Speaker 12 (01:19:21):
This is Sports Talk seven ninety online at Sports seven
ninety dot com.

Speaker 3 (01:19:26):
Now more Doug Fight I get fifty four on Sports
Talk seven ninety The Dugpike Show. I've managed to mess
it up and leave myself a little bit shorter segment,
but I'm pretty confident I can get through Marcos here
before we go to the break.

Speaker 2 (01:19:42):
Marcos, what's up?

Speaker 7 (01:19:42):
Man?

Speaker 4 (01:19:44):
Hey, happy to hear bod.

Speaker 2 (01:19:46):
Happy New Year. I was hoping it was that Marcos.

Speaker 10 (01:19:50):
How the heck are you? Boss?

Speaker 2 (01:19:51):
I'm doing great? Where are you? Are you at the store?

Speaker 10 (01:19:54):
I just got here?

Speaker 4 (01:19:55):
Get ready to go play with Abby? Here at the
toy store again today?

Speaker 2 (01:20:00):
What's up?

Speaker 19 (01:20:00):
Man?

Speaker 7 (01:20:00):
Hey?

Speaker 4 (01:20:01):
I just want to stay on topic that you got
going on regarding that wonderful little picture that you were
talking about. Oh yeah, And I just wanted to add,
you know, we are so blessed where I'm at that
we get to share that story almost on a weekly basis,
And you know, there's nothing more exciting. I've been at
it just like you for a well long time, and

(01:20:21):
every time I get one of these dads that brings
the picture of their wonder up kids, male or female,
doesn't matter who. It just brings me a smile and
I get juiced up and I want to go at
it again and again and again.

Speaker 3 (01:20:34):
You're probably getting Marco's more pictures of first fish on
a fly than anything else, aren't you.

Speaker 10 (01:20:41):
Oh heck yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:20:42):
Which is a nice segue to say, I need take
you and you're the little boy who's no longer little, and.

Speaker 11 (01:20:48):
We gotta do that.

Speaker 4 (01:20:49):
We gotta get you guys on a nice little red
fish on a fly buddy.

Speaker 2 (01:20:53):
You know what, maybe would you have time tomorrow to
do a little segment on getting kids introduced to life fishing.
Hell yeah, tell me when to war. I'll do it
on the phone. Let's do it at eight thirty. Okay,
I'm ought it. Okay, and use your number? Still the same,
still to say it, my good dad, hold on, let

(01:21:14):
me make sure I've still got it.

Speaker 4 (01:21:15):
Oh my god, I'll try a bit about eight twenty five.

Speaker 17 (01:21:19):
Let's put it that way.

Speaker 3 (01:21:20):
You'll be early, that's all right. Do me a favor
and text me your number because I know you still.
I think you still got mine.

Speaker 15 (01:21:26):
We should.

Speaker 2 (01:21:27):
I don't have time.

Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
I can't get through my phone fast enough without wasting
your time.

Speaker 2 (01:21:32):
But yeah, just make sure I want to do this
because because it's so important and one of the things
that I want to impart.

Speaker 3 (01:21:39):
Just be thinking about it on this on this line.
I don't care how old you are. You're never too
young and never too old. Well, maybe an infant, a
toddler probably couldn't handle a fly rod, but once they're
up and walking and talking, they can probably pick it up.

Speaker 2 (01:21:54):
Can't they without a doubt, boss, without a doubt.

Speaker 4 (01:21:58):
And it goes back what you started with, you know
when you said you've been doing it forever and ever,
and the reason you like doing it is because you
learned something of the same way. Every time I pick
up somebody that's new and you know, I'm trying to
figure out how to communicate, get this information into them,
and they teach me something in return.

Speaker 2 (01:22:16):
So I love it.

Speaker 17 (01:22:18):
We'll talk about it.

Speaker 3 (01:22:19):
Oh, absolutely, we will. Yeah, that's a good topic for tomorrow.
Thank you, Marcos. I'm glad to hear from you.

Speaker 5 (01:22:24):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:22:24):
Happy new Year here, my man. How's Gordian sounds doing?

Speaker 17 (01:22:28):
Oh we're rocket baby. We did hear your beautiful things
over here.

Speaker 5 (01:22:32):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:22:32):
I wish you'd let me speak for you guys, I
really do. It's killing me, man, it really is. It
just kills me because I we'll talk off here. I hear,
I hear you all right, man, take care, Bud. Yeah,
I'm glad you're there for tomorrow. I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (01:22:48):
Audio bye, b Yeah, that's one of the most enthusiastic
people I've ever been around, and he's like that all
the time.

Speaker 2 (01:22:56):
Maybe it's the coffee. I don't know. I was just
about to say, that is it? The coffee? Is this?
We need to get some of that coffee? Is what
we need to do.

Speaker 3 (01:23:03):
That's I don't know where he's getted, but we need
to get some of that coffee. Matt or No, it's Mark.
It says that, that says rescue. The game for rescuing
the princess was Prince of Persia. I don't I don't
remember it being that complicated.

Speaker 10 (01:23:18):
This was just the.

Speaker 2 (01:23:20):
That sounds like a pretty complicated game. This was just
hopping over fire, breathing dragons and all these things, barrels,
rolling down hills and jumping over them. It donkey maybe so, Yeah,
it might have been, Yes, it is that may have
been it.

Speaker 3 (01:23:40):
Yeah, I'm I was never sophisticated enough to play something
that involved the name of a country in it.

Speaker 2 (01:23:48):
What else have I got?

Speaker 5 (01:23:49):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:23:49):
Good? Mark. The same guy sends me a picture of
his hold on his friend's daughter, a thirteen year old
with her first buck from just last yesterday, three rivers.
Let me see this picture stand by. This may be video.

Speaker 3 (01:24:06):
Oh it takes a little longer to hurt. Oh no,
I can't even open it right now. I'm gonna have
to check. I have to do some extension of h
GVC or whatever. If you can send it to me
in a different format, maybe just a JPEG or something
I can open. I'd love to see the picture. Kill me,

(01:24:26):
Just kill me someone three two one two five seven
ninety Email me Dougpike Atiheartmedia dot Com, super Mario Brothers, Steve,
You're right, Melvin, super Mario Brothers. That was the one
where we rescued the princess. And thanks to Troy, I'm
looking at emails right now. Thanks to Troy for sending

(01:24:46):
me a link to that flounder story so I don't
have to chase it down. I do appreciate that, Troy,
thanks so much. Good heavens, it's nine o'clock. We got
to take another break. Oh can I believe it?

Speaker 1 (01:25:00):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by
American Shooting Centers, Guns Shooting and Instruction since nineteen eighty nine.

Speaker 2 (01:25:09):
Now here's Doug Pike.

Speaker 3 (01:25:11):
All right, here we go, nine o'clock era on Sports
Talk seven ninety. Thanks to all of you for listening.
This first day back for me in the new year.
I was back for fifty plus on KPRC on Thursday
and Friday. But my first will well, I only took
one weekend off. I talk about it like I was
gone for a month, which I could have been if
i'd have used all of my vacation days. Like a dope,

(01:25:31):
I left some on the table. That's all right. Let
me get to Aaron. I had need been holding there
a little while. I want to make sure I get
to him. See what's up, Aaron? Hey, happy man, I'm great.

Speaker 2 (01:25:43):
How are you here?

Speaker 8 (01:25:43):
To you?

Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
Thank you? I'm pretty good.

Speaker 5 (01:25:45):
Just looking at the sun crystal mountains out here in
Santa Fe.

Speaker 2 (01:25:51):
You're not going to catch a flounder there. I didn't
catch a founder down either. That's at least I get
to look at some mountains here.

Speaker 5 (01:26:02):
What do you feel about by times and and the
you know, those supposed charts, How how influenced?

Speaker 2 (01:26:10):
How much does that influence?

Speaker 15 (01:26:14):
I think?

Speaker 3 (01:26:14):
I think that there is validity to the most active
and least active times, the moon phases and tide movement
and movement of water.

Speaker 2 (01:26:25):
I think matters more.

Speaker 3 (01:26:28):
Probably, and some guys would disagree with me, But here's
the here's the thing that can can hurt you, that
that there's upside and downside to everything right. The downside
to to following those tables and and only going fishing
when there's supposed to be a big bite is that

(01:26:50):
you're not going to be out there if there's not
a big bite, and that means that you're not fishing,
and if you're not fishing, you can't catch fish. Just
because it's big bite doesn't mean you're gonna stumble on
every fish that wants to eat right then.

Speaker 2 (01:27:05):
And just because it's a slow time.

Speaker 3 (01:27:08):
Doesn't mean that there's not one thirty two inch speckled
trout that wants to eat your lure, that will eat
it if you throw it in front of her. You know,
if you're letting anything keep you from going fishing, I
think you're making a mistake.

Speaker 5 (01:27:25):
Yes, I was with the buddy down there and he
was kind of looking at at the bite times. Yeah,
got real frustrated because they didn't bite from ten thirty
three to ten fifty five whatever.

Speaker 9 (01:27:35):
It was.

Speaker 2 (01:27:35):
Hey, hey, you're not gonna catch anything without you know,
without care.

Speaker 11 (01:27:40):
Wa.

Speaker 2 (01:27:40):
Yeah, you're exactly right. And it's just remarkable how many
people do that.

Speaker 3 (01:27:45):
They oh no, no, And it's kind of like, what's
going on in bass fishing with the lipscope stuff. Okay,
there's guys, and I know some of them. There are
guys who will ride around on the lake. Two guys
in a boat, just right around with the trolling motor
on looking for a big bass. And if they come
up to a spot that they think is going to

(01:28:06):
be good and they don't see any bass, they just
keep going and keep moving and never throw. And one
guy told me his son, who has all that technology,
had gone fishing with a buddy on I don't know
what lake. It was around here somewhere, And the guy
called his son that night to ask how they did,
and he said, oh, it was pretty slow.

Speaker 2 (01:28:28):
We were out there on the water for four hours
and never made a cast. Like, what the heck did
you go for?

Speaker 5 (01:28:33):
Then?

Speaker 2 (01:28:34):
Why did you launch the boat?

Speaker 3 (01:28:36):
You're not fishing, yeah, just riding around, just riding around looking.
I don't see a fish here, don't see a fish there.
What if I was to cast to directly to the
left of the boat or directly to the right of
the boat, might have caught a fish, who knows. But
if you don't have your lure in the water, man,
you're you're you might as well quit before you start.

Speaker 19 (01:28:58):
Well I might.

Speaker 5 (01:28:59):
I might not get a fair any rainbows up here,
but I'll have some elk and hatch cheery for you.

Speaker 2 (01:29:04):
Oh lord, Yeah, swing on through town. I'll find you.

Speaker 9 (01:29:08):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:29:10):
You were coming back to Houston.

Speaker 5 (01:29:12):
Uh, yes, sir, Yeah, we need to meet up and
talk about that, about some advertising when I get back up.
Oh wow, okay, yeah, I'll be up in Nebraska in
a few weeks in the Salt Lake after that, but
I'll happen.

Speaker 2 (01:29:24):
Back around okay, Yeah, come on in. I'll buy lunch.

Speaker 3 (01:29:27):
Hey, sounds good, Aaron, Thanks man. I always appreciate the
pictures too. I like seeing your work. It's fascinating. And
I don't know how you earn that beautiful girlfriend.

Speaker 2 (01:29:37):
You got better? Yeah, you out kicked your coverage, man,
better lucky to do it right. That's right, all right man? Yeah,
I'm up here showing her around up here, all right, beautiful?
Yeah you all enjoy see you? Oh man, that's a
good dude right there. He works hard. He and his
he and his crew.

Speaker 3 (01:29:55):
He and Rick Biz are just toe to toe on
who's going to drive the farthest in every year, and
both of them are doing probably close to six figures
a year. It seems like ah Dan wade in with
a picture for me. Eleven year old granddaughter got her
first deer on the second day of the season.

Speaker 2 (01:30:12):
Let me check this out. It's a jpeg. I can
see it. Awesome deer. Where the heck's the smiling granddaughter?
I got a picture of a dead deer. Okay, oh,
here we go. There's a second picture. Two emails later,
it goes, this is her. Okay, let me see. Oh yeah,

(01:30:34):
that's a happy girl right there. That is a happy girl.
Good for her. Awesome. Oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:30:45):
This is something that I would have reminded you about
at any time, but ste Steven asked me to remind says,
please tell everyone that if you smoke the meats that
Bellville has excellent dry rubs. I use them all the
time and they are awesome. I'll forward this to the
folks at Belleville. Steve, I appreciate that I knew that

(01:31:06):
you knew that, and that's something that if somebody didn't
know it, then they do. Now that's how this works.
Seve one three, two, one, two, five seven ninety. Thank
you Mojo for weighing in on the Mario brothers that
I could. I couldn't remember either one of them.

Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
That was Luigi. And who's the other one? Do you
remember Mario? Oho? Well then why didn't Why didn't they
call them the Luigi brothers? Why did Mario get top billing?
That's what I want to know. What he did out
of that one? He probably bought it, you know, he
just slipped him a twenty. Hey man, put me up

(01:31:42):
on the box. Leave Luigi in the in the weeds
over there. We'll let him in. We'll let him into
the game maybe, but not right now. Good heavens, go
ahead and click on him. I'll take him right now.
I know who that is. TikTok, TikTok. Come on, Melvin,
there we go.

Speaker 5 (01:32:00):
Brow.

Speaker 2 (01:32:00):
What's up? Happy New Year, my friend?

Speaker 5 (01:32:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:32:04):
Oh man, you're in there, your three cups in, aren't you?
Plenty of coffee?

Speaker 17 (01:32:09):
I'm actually a cup, a cup of a third probably.

Speaker 2 (01:32:11):
Oh man, Oh, I'm on my third cup.

Speaker 3 (01:32:13):
When I came back Thursday and got into the office,
I had the first cup of coffee i'd had in
like twelve day, ten twelve days.

Speaker 2 (01:32:19):
Whatever? What's on your mind?

Speaker 5 (01:32:21):
Man? Like that?

Speaker 11 (01:32:23):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (01:32:23):
Not much?

Speaker 16 (01:32:24):
A good show yesterday, By the way, I got to
tune in yesterday, thank you.

Speaker 17 (01:32:27):
But but yeah, I'm amama.

Speaker 16 (01:32:30):
I got one more day on my twelve days of vacation,
twelve days of Christmas off and oh, caught a few bass,
caught a few white bass, caught a few crappee, shot
a couple of deer.

Speaker 2 (01:32:40):
Dang, man, you didn't let you go under your feet.

Speaker 17 (01:32:44):
I just wish I could shoot a duck.

Speaker 2 (01:32:46):
I bet that's right.

Speaker 16 (01:32:48):
Yeah, it had the boat me the other day up
there on the north end of Livings And I don't
know if you and I both compared, both sitting there together,
could have stood having water turkeys.

Speaker 17 (01:32:57):
Come by the boat at ten yards half an hour.

Speaker 2 (01:33:00):
Oh, it would have been rough.

Speaker 17 (01:33:02):
My trigger finger was itching.

Speaker 2 (01:33:03):
They're back on my golf course lake again.

Speaker 3 (01:33:06):
There we had a good shad hatch that I started
seeing started seeing the fish flick about maybe two three
weeks ago. And was out there a couple of days
ago and with a buddy of mine, and he was
asking me about him actually because we saw a few.
I said, oh, no, there's more than a few here.
You wait and they'll move, And sure enough they did,
and right back to it. There are probably three a

(01:33:28):
conservative estimate three to five hundred of them on that lake.

Speaker 17 (01:33:31):
Right now, that's not like my last That sound like
what was in my duck spread people.

Speaker 2 (01:33:35):
Oh man, that's horrible.

Speaker 17 (01:33:38):
That's the last last collar you had.

Speaker 16 (01:33:40):
Though, talking about the times and stuff like that, there's
tons of apps out there for fishing.

Speaker 2 (01:33:44):
Oh yeah, I have one call.

Speaker 16 (01:33:46):
I had one called bass app that I swear by,
but I don't live by what I mean by that.

Speaker 17 (01:33:51):
If I'm gonna go fishing, I'm going to go fishing.

Speaker 2 (01:33:53):
Amen.

Speaker 17 (01:33:54):
We went to Kirk. We went to Kurt the other day,
me and my nephew. He never been on the lake.

Speaker 7 (01:33:57):
He loved it.

Speaker 16 (01:33:59):
But we only caught fish all day and it said
that day was a two point eight on us on
a ten scale.

Speaker 8 (01:34:04):
Wow.

Speaker 16 (01:34:04):
So it's gonna be tough. But there is a major, major,
major and minor feeding time.

Speaker 17 (01:34:09):
So what I do with that. I tried to be
on my.

Speaker 16 (01:34:12):
Best area or what I think is the best area
for that time of year during that major and that's
where we caught four of our six fish, was in
that major town.

Speaker 2 (01:34:21):
That's awesome, but it's a really cool happen you can
put it what time of year it is.

Speaker 17 (01:34:26):
What type of cover, and it'll give you the top
five baits.

Speaker 16 (01:34:30):
It'll tell you how to throw out at what part
of the lake to look forward to throw those particular baits.

Speaker 17 (01:34:35):
That's really cool avitage and it's a free app.

Speaker 2 (01:34:37):
But all right, hey, I don't. I hate to do
it too. I hate to do it to faux pro.
But Melbourne's in my ear. Tell them what we got
to take a break? Man?

Speaker 16 (01:34:44):
All right, man, I'm about to go, drop up, drop
on a rainbow trout fond.

Speaker 3 (01:34:47):
I'll give you some yin after it. Yeah, send me
a picture, all right, buddy? All right man, happy new
you're seeing audios YouTube?

Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
All right, then take a little break.

Speaker 13 (01:34:57):
This is sports Stock seven ninety slash Sports Talk seven ninety.
Back to the Doug Pike Show.

Speaker 2 (01:35:05):
All right, welcome back. I hope somebody's got this theme figured.

Speaker 3 (01:35:10):
Out for today. You know, now that I know it.
I figured it out a little bit earlier. Now that
I know it, Oh, that's something I got to take
care of him just a second. Anyway, now that I
know what it is, it makes perfect sense. I figured
it out what maybe one or two breaks ago, somewhere
near Melbourne.

Speaker 2 (01:35:31):
Yeah, something like that. Yeah, I'm early on.

Speaker 3 (01:35:34):
Usually in the first break I forget to listen, and
then by the second break, I know I got to
pay attention now because I'm already one clue behind.

Speaker 2 (01:35:42):
So let's we'll do this after the break at nine thirty.
So any of you who wouldn't mind driving over here
to the galleria to get a good look at a
beautiful gift.

Speaker 3 (01:35:58):
Package of Brass River Provisions, gems and Jellies that you
can take home with you, just be ready to dial
in after When I go to the break, I'll remind
you again, and when we get back from that, we
will play the the musical Melvin's Gems and Jelly's Game.

(01:36:20):
You know there's another game I used to play, Melvin.
Hold on, let me go talk to Dave. He's been
waiting long enough. Holy cow, Dave, I'm sorry about that.
What's up, buddy?

Speaker 9 (01:36:27):
Here, I'm enjoining the show. Yeah, thank you everything. I
sent a couple of pictures on Facebook, one of us
an ancient Rapaula Wabber.

Speaker 2 (01:36:40):
Oh wow.

Speaker 9 (01:36:42):
Yeah, I don't even remember where I got it from,
but I sent your picture of that. And then I
sent a picture of my cousin's husband, Claud woolly. He
he's with his son a long time ago, with his
son looking down at this little cat cat for the
shit he caught on them. And just the look of
a father and a son like that has killer you know,

(01:37:02):
I mean god dog.

Speaker 15 (01:37:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (01:37:06):
Yeah, also also paued. He uh he's you know, he's
my cousin's husband. And but anyway, but you know, believe
it or not, he's a bass player. But also he
got Texas Singer Songwriter of the Year or three years
in a row. Yeah, he's highly talented. He said. He
put tracks down, he put bass tracks down, anything that

(01:37:29):
I would record over the sound masters. But uh no,
then I got another picture that I don't know.

Speaker 11 (01:37:34):
I was looking for it.

Speaker 13 (01:37:35):
My son.

Speaker 9 (01:37:37):
I bought him a zep cone thirty three and a
yellows and black spinner baby, and he told me, he
said it was his birthday and we were up at
the farm up there, and I always he has all
girl cousins. You know, I think he's only got two boys.
And yeah, my mom and dad wanted a girl. They
got four boys, and then they got all the granddaughters.

Speaker 10 (01:37:59):
You know. But no, he goes, dad, let's get away
from these girls over here.

Speaker 9 (01:38:04):
And so I had my head light on and we
walk over to the pond and he was it was
dark there, but I had the light shining out there.
And on his first cast, he caught a pairent and
a half.

Speaker 8 (01:38:14):
Bask.

Speaker 2 (01:38:14):
Oh, get down, that's awesome.

Speaker 10 (01:38:16):
That's a great way to break a Hey, I tell
you how long ago it was.

Speaker 9 (01:38:20):
He was wearing a T shirt and said, your kettle
taco bell.

Speaker 2 (01:38:26):
Oh man, that's fun.

Speaker 9 (01:38:30):
Yeah, he was good. Yeah, now everything's good. I'm gonna
I'm gonna go down here and fish a little while.
I kind of want on a sad note.

Speaker 5 (01:38:37):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (01:38:38):
You know my wife, uh you know, you know she
lost her daughter on seven year battle with cancer and
then now she just drove up that she's heading up
here to Dallas right now to visit with her sister
because she's not looking too good.

Speaker 14 (01:38:51):
Right now.

Speaker 9 (01:38:52):
So yeah, you know, all all our prayers are going out.

Speaker 2 (01:38:56):
We we really do.

Speaker 9 (01:38:57):
You know, there's good times and there's bad times, you know,
in life, and sometimes you just gotta hang in there,
and you know, the best we can do. But I'm
gonna get down here. I think I'm gonna put out
some throw lines out there if I can catch it
smaller perch and then hook him on a bigger hook.

Speaker 10 (01:39:13):
Then I'll go for a bigger fish.

Speaker 3 (01:39:17):
Yeah, a live back, a live perche out there, no
telling how big a catfish you're gonna come eat that thing.

Speaker 9 (01:39:23):
Well, that's what my brother siddle case. He had a
frame picture in there of him with that fitt pound
flat heead you talk, had a big old head and
the tail was dragging the ground.

Speaker 7 (01:39:35):
That's a hey, And I think I think yellow.

Speaker 9 (01:39:37):
Cats don't have as much fat as.

Speaker 8 (01:39:39):
A blue cat.

Speaker 2 (01:39:40):
You know I would agree with that.

Speaker 9 (01:39:42):
Yeah, blue cat is channel Cat's the best one my dad.
You know, you see them with the v tail and
spots on the back there on the back, you know,
fight in the detail. That's how I filled it between
a blue cat and chinel cat. All right, well, hey,
I'm gonna let you get going, Dave.

Speaker 2 (01:39:58):
Yeah, that's great to hear in front of you, man,
I appreciate it. Yeah, I'll give you.

Speaker 9 (01:40:02):
Hopefully I'll be able to send some pictures little fish.

Speaker 2 (01:40:05):
Tomorrow fingers crossed.

Speaker 3 (01:40:07):
Yeah, I don't want to see the picture of your
bait hanging off the hook. I'm talking about a picture
of the real fish that you want to catch all right, man,
I got you love audios always a pleasure man, that guy,
he's got a lot of enthusiasm.

Speaker 2 (01:40:23):
His wife's going through some rough times right now. I
hate that for anybody.

Speaker 3 (01:40:26):
There's just there's just never a good time for bad
news and never a time a bad time for good
news either.

Speaker 2 (01:40:33):
They're just it.

Speaker 3 (01:40:34):
And I hope, I hope she can get a little
peace and get some calm in their lives for a while,
for a long time to come. That's all I'm wishing
in the new year, everybody kind of chill out and
settle down. My wife and I were talking last night
about how how it seems like a lot of people
just aren't as friendly as.

Speaker 2 (01:40:52):
They used to be. Do you see that, Melvin? When
you're out, do you experience that? I can't hear you.
What was that again?

Speaker 3 (01:40:58):
I said, when you're out and about do you do
you experience that people generally old, young, no matter what,
no matter where, no matter who, do they seem a
little less friendly?

Speaker 11 (01:41:10):
Now?

Speaker 2 (01:41:10):
Funny as should mention that? Go ahead?

Speaker 6 (01:41:13):
Yeah, it's I don't know. Everybody's into themselves these days. Oh,
isn't that the truth?

Speaker 2 (01:41:19):
I guess it's due to the eye phone and the
eye this.

Speaker 3 (01:41:23):
Oh yeah, well then, and the eye matter more than
anybody else mindset that everybody has. I hadn't even thought
about the relationship to the iPhone and.

Speaker 2 (01:41:32):
I this, you know, and it's uh, you know, I
you know, it's all about me, all about me.

Speaker 14 (01:41:38):
So yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:41:38):
And you can see it on the roads every you
come to any red light anywhere, and there'll be a
sign that says no, U turn, and they make you
turns yeah, stop sign. I don't have to stop, you
know at that sign. It's not there, it's a recommendation,
it's not Yeah. And unfortunately, we are so lacking in
law enforcement. And I'll tie this to the outdoors in
just a second, but there aren't enough policemen. I rarely

(01:42:03):
rarely see police in my neighborhood unless they're not well,
not in the neighborhood, but even on the main streets
down around where I live, unless they're racing to an
accident somewhere or racing to an incident somewhere that you
used to see them just it'd be kind of parked
in the middle of the street and you know, in
an esplanade crossover and just waiting for speeders coming either way.

(01:42:25):
But man, I can't remember the last time I saw
somebody even on the freeways, almost never except on the
now on bel Way eight. The county will put cars
out there to slow people down a little bit, but
otherwise it's just free for all. I got passed again
this morning on the way into work, just by somebody
doing I don't know how fat Two times yesterday after

(01:42:47):
dark way after dark, I saw one car on on
fifty nine coming home that was totally blacked out. And
then when I got off of fifty nine on the highway,
I think I got on Highway six to come home,
another car just driving around, no lights on whatsoever. Well,
we'll just do it with street lights, and you couldn't
see them. You couldn't see them coming, there's no question

(01:43:09):
about that. So anyway to tie that to the out
of doors, the same is true with law enforcement.

Speaker 2 (01:43:16):
In the out of doors.

Speaker 3 (01:43:18):
We don't have enough game wardens, they don't have enough
equipment to monitor everything. And it's frustrating that I still
have people come up to me, of all people, and
these are people I know, to tell me something they
did illegal in the field or on.

Speaker 2 (01:43:36):
The water and just talk about it very casually. Uh,
no big deal.

Speaker 3 (01:43:42):
Yeah, I just I just took this fish home, or
I shot that bird or whatever. And I'll say, don't
don't tell me things like that. I don't want to
hear them. If you're going to tell me that you're
breaking the law, you might want to rethink that, because
it's just not good for anybody did stupid stuff when
I was young, but I it's been like decades since

(01:44:05):
I ever did something stupid, and I'm glad that I
figured it out.

Speaker 2 (01:44:10):
I'm glad that I figured it out. It just makes
no sense. There's no reason for that. And with as
many people as we have trying to enjoy.

Speaker 3 (01:44:18):
The outdoors, why would you Why would you deliberately keep
too many fish, Why would you deliberately shoot too many birds,
kill too many deer?

Speaker 2 (01:44:30):
There's just no reason for it. And I don't know,
I bet I could.

Speaker 3 (01:44:36):
It would be a very small group of people in
this in this state of ours who rely on wild
game or fish for sustenance. And if that's you and
you gotta take a fish home to feed your family,
I don't condone it, but I'm not gonna I'm not

(01:44:57):
gonna track you down. But Otherwise, if you still got
a few bucks in your pocket and you can get a.

Speaker 2 (01:45:04):
Happy meal on the way home, then don't do that.
Don't do that. Well, I'm about to step onto a soapbox.
I don't want to do it. We're gonna talk briefly
about the Century twenty twenty five golf tournament going on
in where else, Hawaii.

Speaker 3 (01:45:21):
That's the only way they're gonna get these big name
guys to play in the in January. And I'll talk
about that when we get back, and then we'll probably
shift right back into some outdoors gear because there's a
lot I want to talk about before we before we
finished this first show of the new year.

Speaker 12 (01:45:37):
On the way out, This is Sports Talk seven ninety,
a Houston sports fan on air and on Facebook.

Speaker 13 (01:45:45):
A contact back to The Doug Fike Show.

Speaker 3 (01:45:48):
Nine twenty seven on Sports Talk seven ninety The Doug
Pike Show.

Speaker 2 (01:45:51):
Thanks for listening.

Speaker 3 (01:45:53):
I'm gonna get Dave here on the phone and he's
gonna do double duty. He's got a question and then
he wants to try to earn some delicious gems and jellies.

Speaker 2 (01:46:04):
Dave, what's up, man?

Speaker 8 (01:46:07):
How do you do?

Speaker 2 (01:46:08):
I'm good?

Speaker 8 (01:46:08):
How are you I'm having a wonderful rainy day in Houston. Yeah,
it seems to be.

Speaker 2 (01:46:17):
I have a little bit of an accent. Do I
detect great Britain?

Speaker 8 (01:46:22):
I am English, sir.

Speaker 2 (01:46:23):
Absolutely fantastic to have you on. Thank you very much.

Speaker 8 (01:46:28):
We've spoken previously. I'm a commercial fishery song yes, okay,
good consulting, and I wanted to update you on a
few things that have been happening. We've been hired by
a large industry shrimp industry organization to go ahead and
check the authenticity of what's going on and what's being

(01:46:51):
served in seafood resta funds.

Speaker 2 (01:46:52):
I understand.

Speaker 3 (01:46:53):
I've actually gotten an email from somebody who I think, yeah, good.

Speaker 2 (01:46:58):
Good, good.

Speaker 8 (01:47:00):
So if you actually look at that email and look
at the press release, you'll find that we sampled over
We sampled forty four restaurants randomly chosen in Galveston and
Chema right, and according to their menu, six of them

(01:47:24):
were being inauthentic about the origin of the shrimp.

Speaker 2 (01:47:29):
Wow, so interesting.

Speaker 8 (01:47:31):
That's not exactly a brilliant rate, no, So basically, I
just want to tell everybody that if you go down
to Galveston and you are sat next to the peer
or wherever you're sat next to, and you assume that
you're going to be eating Gulf shrimp, you're more than
likely not going to be doing that. And that is

(01:47:53):
desjoying the shrimp industry in our country and it needs
to stop. There is a legislation already in place in Louisiana,
legislation is being penned for Texas. But basically there has
been a Federal Trade Commission ruling that says, even though

(01:48:15):
you don't say that you're serving golf shop, if you're
using the imagery of the golf like boats and nets
or your location to employ that you're serving golf ship,
then you are guilty of miss leading mission advertising. Absolutely.
So basically all I can say is, please look at

(01:48:37):
the press release. It's positive but depressing. But what we
need to do is we need to as people who
are invested in the fishing, you know, recreational fishing. If
you don't have commercial fishing, you're not going to have
recreational fishing.

Speaker 2 (01:48:55):
Very good time, all right, I just go ahead.

Speaker 8 (01:49:01):
Yeah, I'm just saying, please, for the love of love
of everything's good to keep our industry going, can you please,
whenever you go into a restaurant, ask the question, and
ask the question again.

Speaker 3 (01:49:13):
For the love of golf shrimp. I understand you're interested
in jams and jellies too.

Speaker 8 (01:49:20):
Apparently I have been put forward to be interested in that,
so indeed I love jams and jellies.

Speaker 2 (01:49:26):
Have you been listening to the show?

Speaker 8 (01:49:30):
I have been listening to some of the shows.

Speaker 2 (01:49:31):
Okay, well, let's see how you do Melbourne take it away.

Speaker 21 (01:49:42):
Money Now a taste of Melvin's jams and jellies on
the Dark Bike Show, deliciously spread for you by Brothas
River Provisions locally made Gornet jams, jellies and sauces for
all occasions.

Speaker 2 (01:49:59):
All right, there we go.

Speaker 3 (01:50:00):
And if Mike's listening, I got to find out from
him what pairs well with Gulf shrimp.

Speaker 2 (01:50:05):
Dave so and I don't know what jelly that would be.
What do you think? Maybe joh I like that he
has one too, He has a couple of them. Yeah,
it does. So what do you think The theme of
today's bump music was.

Speaker 8 (01:50:23):
I'm going to guess recreation recreation time on the water
or on recreation time?

Speaker 13 (01:50:37):
Can we go?

Speaker 11 (01:50:37):
I don't know, I don't know, I'm wrong.

Speaker 3 (01:50:42):
It's okay, maybe a little bit. What I'm going to
give you a hint. I'll give you a hint.

Speaker 2 (01:50:48):
What days? What two days known better by one name
might be good days for records? The weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:50:58):
Yeah, we need to get a bell. You need to
get a bell for winners, Melvin. Yes, we sure do it, frankly. Frankly,
I love giving away his jams and jellies anyway, So
we're we're not gonna have any losers overall, I think.

Speaker 2 (01:51:09):
But that was a very good guess. You nailed it. Okay,
So Melvioyne will get your information.

Speaker 3 (01:51:14):
I'm gonna check that price or that press release after
the show and make sure that I schedule an interview
for fifty plus because I want to share this information
also with that audience. And then once I get that
interview in the can, I'm gonna run it over here
as well. So, Dave, you've you've served me well today, sir,
and given me a lot of information.

Speaker 2 (01:51:35):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 11 (01:51:37):
Thank you for the joy.

Speaker 2 (01:51:39):
I think you're gonna like these. Thanks. All right, we're
gonna take a little break here. Get when we get back,
i'm gonna tell you, well, no, right now, I'm gonna
tell you. I'll get to that golf tournament in a minute.
I'll do that when we get back.

Speaker 3 (01:51:51):
So I saw that call from Dave, and when I
heard that accent, I had a good idea who it was.
And I'm so glad because that isn't he hung up? Okay,
that's all right, that's all right. Yeah, if he'll just
call back, we'll get him his jams and Jelly's on
the way out.

Speaker 2 (01:52:05):
Phoenix nins out there.

Speaker 12 (01:52:06):
Sports Talk seven ninety, Breaking sports News on Facebook twenty
four to seven.

Speaker 11 (01:52:12):
We'll get that information to them.

Speaker 13 (01:52:13):
This is the Doug Pike Show, not forty.

Speaker 2 (01:52:17):
Nine on Sports Talk seven ninety, The Doug Pike Show.
Thanks for listening. Certainly, do appreciate it. Well, let's go
to Hawaii, shall we.

Speaker 3 (01:52:25):
Well, if I tell you what, if I won the lottery,
I might just say that and grab twenty thirty people
and haul them down there. Bitchpends on how much I win,
of course, But if I won that thing that some
guy in California won more than a billion dollars, even
if they take half of it, I'd say he's pretty
well set for a while.

Speaker 2 (01:52:43):
I could. I could probably get to the end of
my life on five hundred million, I think I would
hope all right to the leaderboard. I go leaning in
so I can read this thing. It's in such small type.
They're down at.

Speaker 3 (01:52:57):
By the way, They're just right down there in Hawaii.
Have one heck of a time on the plantation course
at Kapalua. I have not played on Maui. I've played
on Oahu and Kawhi, but I have not played golf
on Maui. I think it was maybe who might have
been the big island on the other trip. I don't remember.
At DECKI Botsiyama leading the way sixteen under par through

(01:53:21):
two rounds. It's several hours earlier over there in Hawaii,
as you might well imagine, with them being halfway out
in the Pacific Ocean, so they're probably still asleep over there.
So Matsuyama had sixteen after shooting a pair of sixty five's,
Colin Morricawa had fifteen after a sixty six sixty five start,

(01:53:41):
and then one shot back at fourteen. We find Corey Connors,
Maverick mcneee, Tom Hogy, and Thomas Detri the thirteen's, and
there are a few well, actually exactly well, there's four
of them. I'll give you those, Kick and Bradley, Harry Hall,
Cameron Young, and Wyndham Clark, and then it goes on
from there. There's some pretty good, pretty recognizable names, mostly

(01:54:04):
people who didn't mind a free trip to Hawaii, and
mostly men on the PGA tour whose wives said, oh, yeah,
we're going to this one. You qualified for it. We're
going one of the tourist signature events. The big names
down there having fun enjoying Hawaii golf. The time that
I got to go down there and play golf, I

(01:54:25):
actually did two years in a row on media trips
down there to Kawaii, and that was pretty special.

Speaker 2 (01:54:32):
I got to tell you. We played golf for I.

Speaker 3 (01:54:35):
Believe it was four days in the mornings around eight
o'clock each day, and then the afternoons were hours in
which to enjoy a list of activities that all we
had to do was just check a box. This is
what I'm gonna do Tuesday afternoon, this is what I'm
gonna do Wednesday afternoon, Thursday afternoon, Friday afternoon. And it

(01:54:56):
was it was quite special that was put on by
the island. The people of the island hosted us down
there and it was first rate all the way. It
was absolutely beautiful accommodations. They moved us around actually from
a hotel to hotel, two nights in three different hotels,
just to kind of get a bigger flavor of everything
that was going on down there.

Speaker 2 (01:55:18):
Spectacular start to finish. I highly recommend it. If you
can ever get down there and you never have been.

Speaker 3 (01:55:24):
That's a bucket list trip for anybody who's never been there,
if you can pull it off somehow, And like I said,
if I win the lottery, I might sponsor somebody's trip
to Hawaii.

Speaker 2 (01:55:34):
Tomorrow we are going to talk to Marcos Senriquez.

Speaker 3 (01:55:37):
I'm glad he called from over at Gordian Sons this morning,
talk about getting people, not just kids.

Speaker 2 (01:55:43):
We were talking earlier in the program about.

Speaker 3 (01:55:46):
How much I enjoy hearing stories of a young person's
first fish or deer or duck or dove or whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:55:54):
I really do, and I like seeing the pictures.

Speaker 3 (01:55:57):
I will respond to them as quickly as I can
and hopefully encourage everybody in the family to keep getting
out in the outdoors. But tomorrow we're going to focus
on fly fishing, because I still run into people who
say no, I don't want it to get into fly fishing.
It's just too hard, or I can't cast far enough. Well,

(01:56:18):
you can do all of the above if you just
fly fishing. To fishing is like bow hunting to deer hunting.
You have to change your mindset. You have to realize
that you have a shorter casting range than you do
with spinning or casting equipment. But there's really not a
fish that swims that you can't catch on fly tackle

(01:56:41):
if you learn how to do it. And I'll talk
about this at length tomorrow, but you've got to learn
from somebody who knows what they're doing.

Speaker 2 (01:56:50):
And this brings us to an analogy with golf.

Speaker 3 (01:56:54):
If you learn how to play golf from somebody who's
an eighteen handicap, you're going to be an eighteen handicap.
They can't They can't teach you up from there, probably,
But if you learn from a good instructor, you can
become a better player if you follow that instruction and
if you practice that instruction. Same with fly fishing. You've

(01:57:16):
got to practice at it to get good at it.
My son's had a couple of lessons over there with
Andy Packmore and pack Moore had him doing more, I
probably could have caught him taught him kind of okay,
pretty decently. But the things that Andy incorporated really quickly,
and my son being a pretty quick learner, made it

(01:57:39):
easy for him. I got to get him back out.
It's been a while since he's been fly fishing, only
because he and his buddies. I don't know that any
of his buddies fly fishing. But we're going to talk
about that tomorrow. I haven't heard back. I don't think
from Jerry about three zero three AMMO for Andre and
his rifle.

Speaker 2 (01:57:57):
Stand by. I've got all kinds of yeah, I haven't
heard from Jerry.

Speaker 3 (01:58:02):
I got a hunch he's sitting in a deer stand
down at the som Burrito, and.

Speaker 2 (01:58:06):
So we'll deal with that. Early in the program, we
got talking.

Speaker 3 (01:58:11):
My veterinarian Doc calls and says, says, we ended up
starting talking about how cold weather is coming and how
we need to be prepared for that, and somehow got
into a conversation with a veterinarian who knew that would
happen about dogs and overheating dogs.

Speaker 2 (01:58:30):
And I want to talk a little.

Speaker 3 (01:58:32):
Bit about that tomorrow, not necessarily about dogs, but I'm
going to get back on the safety thing just about
in the in the hot weather.

Speaker 2 (01:58:42):
So well, I'll just tell you this today so I
don't have to worry about it tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:58:45):
When we talked about how these how sometimes people leave
pets or whatever in a car and they overheat and die,
there was years ago I saw something that drove me crazy.
There was a commercial that was put out by one
of the car companies I think, or maybe by some
safety company.

Speaker 2 (01:59:04):
I don't know, but the bottom line.

Speaker 3 (01:59:05):
Was it said if you're in a public service announcement
that said, when you leave your car, if you carry
kids in your car, when you leave your car, put
something else of value to you in the back seat
so that you don't leave it there.

Speaker 2 (01:59:19):
Well, the most valuable thing you have is in that
car seat in the back seat. Your phone, your laptop,
your shoes, your glasses, I don't care what it is.
It's not as important as your child. And if you
forget a kid in the car, that's all on you.
I've never understood how anybody could say, put something valuable

(01:59:40):
in the back seat so you don't forget your kid.
That just it draws me crazy. And on staying warm
in a deer stand, it gets really really cold. Captain Scott,
I bet he's either thought of it or he's already
done it. I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (01:59:55):
If you're still listening, Scott, let me know, put a
little solar panel on the top top of your deer stand.
Put a little solar panel on top of your deer stand,
run a little USB port into the stand, and you
can either power up your phone make sure it stays
juiced up while you're there. You can, I don't know,

(02:00:15):
you could run a little fan if it's hot too,
But a solar panel wouldn't be a bad idea, and
it surely wouldn't cost a whole lot of money to
put on a deer stand. Now, you're not going to
run an oven with it, but I bet it would
give you some idea of how to maybe keep a
little bit warmer. Oh, I got lots to talk about tomorrow,
So so much to talk about tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (02:00:34):
Thank you all for listening. I'm so glad to be back.
Is this an early exit? I just forgot?

Speaker 3 (02:00:41):
Okay, all right, well I'm back. I'm happy to be here.
I hope you guys can join me tomorrow. Thank you
all for listening. We'll be back Sunday morning at eight o'clock.
I'll see you then. Thanks for listening, Stay safe, get outside,
have some fun ideos.
