We've been having trouble with this dog on the phone
again this morning and we're having the tag team getting
people on. But I'm glad you're here.

How long have you been able with Cca? Twenty one years?
Holy cow? I got shirt and I got fishing rogerr Age.
So anyway, we're going to talk about the Star Tournament.
It's up and running now and I want to just
get into as much of it as we can. Here
barely a month into this year's Star and they're already
some good fish on the board, aren't there?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
They sure are. We've got some good weighted finish. We
have a couple confirmed Tag Redfish winners, which is a
big deal one to each division. The Ford Red Tag
Division has the first confirmed winner as well as our
Tag Detexas division, so always excited about that.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
And those two guys are looking at one of them
is looking at a boat, motor trailer and a truck
to pull it with. The other guy's just gonna have
to use his own truck.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Right exactly. Unfortunately, by somebody's got to use their own truck.
But as you said, the red tag winner. He is
getting a Ford F one fifty Super Crew along with
that Haniam Ego and the tag. The Texas Division is
getting the Transport two twenty.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Well, yeah, I don't feel sorry for either one of them,
I gotta tell.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
You so, no doubt. Congratulations, you know, yeah, they they're
excited as you can imagine.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
So five of those five, each of those two packages,
the one with the truck and the one without the truck,
and man talk about where those tagged reds are released
for a minute. Two will you?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah? Definitely the question we get all the time, and
we tell people it's pretty simple. We put them in
the most highly finished public type access places that we
can find up and down the coast, and so from
Sabine all the way down to the you know real
Grand about every you know, three and a half miles
per average, there's a tagg redfish release. It's pretty unique though.
(01:58):
You know, those fish travel the first two vents travel
to Combine eleven to twelve miles oh wow. Before they
were caught in a very short period of time, while
some fish are caught within you know, a couple hundred
yards to where they're released. So you just never know,
but those fish are out there, and every day we
hear from people that say, now, I never thought it
was gonna happen to me. Yeah, because they're they're there,

and and that's the biggest thing we tell them. Think
about those highly accessible public type spots for people like
the fish. Of course, if you get downside where there's
a think about popular red fish spots. That's what we
try to do with them.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
How many how many red fish did y'all tag and
release this year?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Each division? The Ford Red Tag division has sixty and
the tags the Texas division has sixty one and twenty
total fish.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
That's not bad at all. That's that's pretty decent odds
for somebody who understands where accessible you know, what accessible means,
and just kind of looked at the map from kind
of where they fish, and it just put your head
on a little straighter and he could probably I could
probably guess where a lot of those fish were released,
couldn't I definitely.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I tell you what, you can go back and use
utilize our social media and we're not shy about you know,
really I get not really showing exactly where we're at.
We get some good hints, you know, we're not sitting there,
just focused on the water. And so we encourage people
to check that social media because a lot of people
can kind of find it from that and figure out, hey,
(03:25):
I think this might be where one is and go
give that a go as well. So make sure you
follow our social media because those videos are out there.

It makes me when you talk about putting them accessible
places where people catch redfish. It reminds me of something
my son called me on the phone to tell me
that he had done about maybe two years ago with
one of his buddies. He told me they were going fishing.
I said, okay, and he was just with one of
his friends who lives in bell Atir or something like that,
I don't know. An hour later, he calls me Coleman
and he says, hey, man, you're not going to believe
(03:53):
what I just caught. I sent you a picture of it,
and I opened my phone up and I look, and
he's got a He's standing there holding about a eighteen
to twenty inch red fish. Okay, you know where he
was up Buffalo Up Buffalo Bio, within a mile and
a half of the galleria. Oh wow, yeah, drop a
few there. Want stunned Coleman Todd from Cca on the

Doug Pike Show. Have you had any sob stories yet
from people who caught a redfish or even a good
fish and weren't registered yet?
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Definitely, you know, that's the one thing that we just
sent out an email this week. By those fish are
caught and all the average we have about twenty percent
of those fish caught. Well in any given year, you know,
eighteen to twenty five fish out of that one twenty
get caught. And so when you see that leader board,
if it only has say five to seven winners on it,
that means everybody else was non registered. So unfortunately we

get that, and unfortunately some people still don't understand what
the tournament is, so they make a mistake that way,
and then they find out and a lot of people enter.
Some people just for got to enter. And that's the
really the sad ones. As you said, you know, when
somebody knows what the tournament is, the where goes out
and just forgets and uh, and that's unfortunate, but it
(05:11):
does happen.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
I remember from a lot of years ago going in
that there was some Bill Kinge were talking about some
something that happened and this guy's wife had called and
was upset and wanted Cca to pay for therapy for
her husband because he had caught a tag redfish, but
he wasn't entered.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
I can imagine i'd need some therapy if I was
in issues as well.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Oh my gosh, So what's going on with the offshore
leader board?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yeah, so the offshore leader board, We've got some really
good snapper on there.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
I have not seen.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
I've heard reports, but I have not seen the or
had not hit the board yet. But it's a really
good dorada this year. You know, if you've been out
of the beach and stuff, the seaweed is, man, it's
all right, seaweed is out. So evidently there's some good
weed lines out there because last week I've heard several reports,
and of course we'll see if they hit the leader
board next week. If everything's good, almost fish, but some

really good dorado, and I'd say that's the two biggest
thing right now. It's a couple of really good snappers
at the top and then some really really big dorado
I believe that are coming. So that's pretty exciting for sure.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
What's your gut tell you about where all the kingfish went?
Because I noticed the board Yptan. Granted there's a lot
I think of thirty pounds minimum on the kingfish, but
by now in a normal year back well not normal,
but twenty thirty years ago when I was really chasing kingfish,
there would have been two or three of them on
the board. By now, what's going on with kingfish?
Speaker 2 (06:38):
They had no doubt. You know, that's the interesting thing
when you look back at the dorada kind of that.
You know, obviously that's pretty obvious. Usually if there's not
a good rip or current or something closed for those
fishs that they like to hang on with the kingfish.
My personal feeling just growing up fishing out I'm out
of Gordon, it's probably a lot of structure we've lost.
You know, there's so much structure there that was fairly
closed that was removed, and I think that's played a

large part. Endo you know, it's king fishing. They like
to hang on that structure. That being said, you know
heats up a lot of times you'll get you know,
fish right there at the jetty. So oh yeah, you
just never know. So maybe it's maybe it's all the
fresh water and the rain we've had, Maybe that stuffs
coming out and keeping them pushed out and then it's
a combination of things. But it is interesting, as you said,
(07:21):
normally that's some of the first big fish on the
board and to not see them that is unique.

Calemb Todd from Cca on Doug Pike Show. Talk about
the kids divisions, for I mean, at what are what
are they chasing?
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Yeah, so that's one of our problems. You only get
me fired up. That's the biggest hit when you start
talking about handing thirty twenty fifteen thousand dollars scholarships out
the kids. Man, it's that's one of the highlights of
the job for sure, is that end of the year banquet.
And so they had two divisions, our Star Youth and
Start in Star Teams. Kids ages six to seventeen are
(07:53):
eligible and if they're eligible at the age that they
sign up, So if they sign up at seventeen and March,
they're seventeen throughout the throughout the summer and six to
ten and eleven to seventeen is out of broaked down.
We have waited divisions and gas tops and sheep hid
for both divisions, and so first through fifth place or
all scholarships thirty thousand twenty thousand, fifteen seventy five hundred
(08:16):
and twenty five hundred dollars scholarships, and so's there, and
we encourage everybody to get out there because that's truly
life altering for those of you that win a scholarship.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
I can't think of any better excuse to take kids
fishing every weekend than the opportunity to get them a scholarship, can.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
You, no doubt? And I tell you what, if you're
preparing to go fishing, go buy Academy Sports and Outdoors
because they sponsor all those first place scholarships and that
is a huge deal. And so somebody step up and
do that. That's a big deal. And I'm right to
the way he asks, the best thing on the planet
if you can get one of those kids a scholarship.
In addition, on the U side, another thing I tell
(08:56):
people all the time is if your neighbor's got to kid,
sign them up, even if they never go fishing. You know,
we give away a twenty five thousand dollars Channel thirteen
ABC at the end of the year bonus drawing. Now
we give away a sixty thousand dollars scholarship in honor
of Bill Kenney, as you know, a long time start
directors retired, and so even if they never go out
(09:17):
and fish, they're in that end of the year bonus
drawing for those two scholarships for ten dollars and you'll
spend that on you know, a cocon of snickers at
the canning the store these days.

Talk about I had a one of my listeners, longtime guy.
I called him faux Pro. His name's Forrest. He wants
to he's a he's a fresh water guy. He lives
up on Lake Livingston. He wants to know the rules.
He wants to know where to take his fish when
he catches it.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Break that down for us, definitely the best thing to do.
On Star Tournament dot Org. We have a waystation list
and we have if you're anywhere, you're on the coast,
we have one year their same thing, from Sabine to
the Rio Grand we have somebody in every town. Go
to that, you know, Star tournament dot Org page. Look
at those way stations, there's eighteen of them. The only
(10:04):
inland waystation we have at Kingsville. But other than that,
when you start going you know, the entire coast, if
you're fishing, there's one close to you. And so I
tell people before you go, just kind of glance at
that as you sign up. Glance at those way stations
that a way you know where your waist station is
big thing. You have twenty four hours to turn that
fish in. Get it turned in as soon as possible.
(10:25):
But if something happens, you catch a fish and eating
and the way stations closed, you don't stress. Do what
you need to do. Obviously in the tag red fish division,
now you're releasing those fish, sold other fish. Clip the
tag video yourself releasing it. Hold on to the tag
and you're good to go. But don't stress. You know,
if somebody's closed or something like that, that's not a
big deal. You've got twenty four hours. Just get it
(10:47):
in there as soon as you can. Ahead of that
twenty four hour deadline.

I think that'd be worth paying for a motel another night.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
No doubt, No doubt.

I got a little a saying for you. If you're
on the coast, you're always.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Close and that's that's there. It is still a wait station.
If you're on the coast, you're close to the weight stace.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah man, yeah man, You're always close to a big prize. Too,
if you know what you're doing along the you know,
it's funny I hear people talk about using different baits.
They use this and that and the other for red
fish or trout or whatever. Do you recall over the
last few years, anybody whose story includes catching a big,
big red fish, well not a big red fish, but
(11:28):
even well any of the red fish or tag redfish
or any of these other fish on a very unusual
bait that just comes to mind, or.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
No, you know, so the biggest one and uh, it's
been a fly and that was very recent. Well don't
hear that a lot? That's very unique? And so to
talk to the gentleman about his catch that that shot me,
be honest, because we don't we don't hear a lot
of that. Oh you know, it's obviously a great sport,
(11:55):
not not as popular as you know as a casting
or spinning tackle, and so very unique type fishing. And uh,
the first one that I can't wait to talk to
the boys because that's actually a fish it'll be pending
on this week's leader board that we're excited about. And yeah,
and so funny that that's fresh. And but I'm presuming
(12:16):
caught on the fly I was. I was really taken
back by that because you just don't hear that a lot.

I know, I'm presuming it was a red fish, is
am I correct?
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Exactly? Yeah, exactly it was a red fish?

Wow? Man, So he called it tag the red fish
on flying? How cool is that? Amazing?

Exactly?

Yeah, exactly, that's amazing.

So anything else they need to know about the star, You.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Know, the biggest thing is get out there and fish.
We tell people that all the time. What do you
have to do? And uh, probably the biggest question other
question we get besides where the red fish are? Are
the landing procedures really really simple? You know, to complete
that catch, whoever is holding that rod when that fish
becomes hooked, whether if it's in a rod holder, whoever
grabs that rod holder after the fish was hooked, h

that who has to real that fish in. It doesn't
matter who castes the rod or let the you know,
the bait out if you're offshore, it doesn't matter who
who helps an assisting land the fish, whether it's netting,
leading those things, but whoever's holding that rod has got
to And of course you got to be a CCA member.
You got to join the Star Tournament, and you got
to have your valid Texas parcelwad Life saltwater fishing license.

And so those are some highlights. Other than that, go
out there and fish and have a good time. I
tell people all the time, fishing is good for the
soul and that's what it's about. Get out there and
do it. And it could be you, just like it
is gonna be somebody, So why not you.

Break that down for us, definitely the best thing to do.
On Star Tournament dot Org. We have a waystation list
and we have if you're anywhere, you're on the coast,
we have one year their same thing, from Sabine to
the Rio Grand we have somebody in every town. Go
to that, you know, Star tournament dot Org page. Look
at those way stations, there's eighteen of them. The only
(10:04):
inland waystation we have at Kingsville. But other than that,
when you start going you know, the entire coast, if
you're fishing, there's one close to you. And so I
tell people before you go, just kind of glance at
that as you sign up. Glance at those way stations
that a way you know where your waist station is
big thing. You have twenty four hours to turn that
fish in. Get it turned in as soon as possible.
(10:25):
But if something happens, you catch a fish and eating
and the way stations closed, you don't stress. Do what
you need to do. Obviously in the tag red fish division,
now you're releasing those fish, sold other fish. Clip the
tag video yourself releasing it. Hold on to the tag
and you're good to go. But don't stress. You know,
if somebody's closed or something like that, that's not a
big deal. You've got twenty four hours. Just get it
(10:47):
in there as soon as you can. Ahead of that
twenty four hour deadline.

I think that'd be worth paying for a motel another night.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
No doubt, No doubt.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
I got a little a saying for you. If you're
on the coast, you're always.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Close and that's that's there. It is still a wait station.
If you're on the coast, you're close to the weight stace.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah man, yeah man, You're always close to a big prize. Too,
if you know what you're doing along the you know,
it's funny I hear people talk about using different baits.
They use this and that and the other for red
fish or trout or whatever. Do you recall over the
last few years, anybody whose story includes catching a big,
big red fish, well not a big red fish, but
(11:28):
even well any of the red fish or tag redfish
or any of these other fish on a very unusual
bait that just comes to mind, or.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
No, you know, so the biggest one and uh, it's
been a fly and that was very recent. Well don't
hear that a lot? That's very unique? And so to
talk to the gentleman about his catch that that shot me,
be honest, because we don't we don't hear a lot
of that. Oh you know, it's obviously a great sport,
(11:55):
not not as popular as you know as a casting
or spinning tackle, and so very unique type fishing. And uh,
the first one that I can't wait to talk to
the boys because that's actually a fish it'll be pending
on this week's leader board that we're excited about. And yeah,
and so funny that that's fresh. And but I'm presuming
(12:16):
caught on the fly I was. I was really taken
back by that because you just don't hear that a lot.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
I know, I'm presuming it was a red fish, is
am I correct?
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Exactly? Yeah, exactly it was a red fish?
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Wow? Man, So he called it tag the red fish
on flying? How cool is that? Amazing?
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Exactly?
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Yeah, exactly, that's amazing.
Speaker 2 (12:34):

So anything else they need to know about the star, You.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Know, the biggest thing is get out there and fish.
We tell people that all the time. What do you
have to do? And uh, probably the biggest question other
question we get besides where the red fish are? Are
the landing procedures really really simple? You know, to complete
that catch, whoever is holding that rod when that fish
becomes hooked, whether if it's in a rod holder, whoever
grabs that rod holder after the fish was hooked, h
(13:00):
that who has to real that fish in. It doesn't
matter who castes the rod or let the you know,
the bait out if you're offshore, it doesn't matter who
who helps an assisting land the fish, whether it's netting,
leading those things, but whoever's holding that rod has got
to And of course you got to be a CCA member.
You got to join the Star Tournament, and you got
to have your valid Texas parcelwad Life saltwater fishing license.
(13:22):
And so those are some highlights. Other than that, go
out there and fish and have a good time. I
tell people all the time, fishing is good for the
soul and that's what it's about. Get out there and
do it. And it could be you, just like it
is gonna be somebody, So why not you.
