of video. I've seen all kinds of interesting posts from people.
Captain Scott posted that the water there this year is
every bit as bad, if not worse in some places
as last year. So they're gonna have to just start
to clean up all over again up in the Hill country,

and it's just I hate that for them. My son
two weeks ago, two or three weeks ago now, it
was maybe was in that area, tubeing down the river,
just having a blast with everybody else who was on
the river for a long weekend. And he had a
wonderful time, which most people who visit that area do.

But boy, when that rain starts and it was I
was looking, I think it was day before yesterday, maybe Thursday, yeah,
I'm almost positive it was Thursday. I was really looking
at that weather pattern up there, and there was just
so much rainfall uphill from them, farther inland from them,
and all of that water has to go somewhere, and

those little canyons that hold those rivers just swell up
and leave their banks, and there's not a darn thing
anybody can do about it, Just not a darn thing.
That's just so sad, and so it just I know
that a lot of people up in there are I think,
why us again, Why couldn't that water have gone somewhere

else this time? That's just the way nature is. Nature
goes where it wants to go, does what it wants
to do. Speaking of on a far less urgent note,
there's a little yellow thing in the Gulf of America
right now. It's in the north. It's in the northeast

corner of the Gulf of America over there, off the
Florida coast, and it's first of all, it's nobody go
Don't anybody go out and buy cases of water or
hord toilet paper or peanut butter or bread or anything.
Right now. I don't believe based on a lot of
years of experience. I don't believe this one's gonna affect

us at all what it's supposed to do. It has
up to a thirty percent chance of developing into something
over the next seven days. But during those next seven days,
it's also going to be moving north to northwest, which will,
if it continue use on that track, put it on

shore whatever it becomes. If it becomes anything at all,
it'll put it on shore around I'll say, maybe Alabama, Mississippi,
somewhere in there. I don't know that it's even going
to affect Louisiana much if it, if it does what
it's supposed to do now, I haven't looked. That's all
based on stuff I found at the National Hurricane Center.

And actually, what I can do right now is hang on,

this whole field full of mice in here, and it
drives me crazy. I want to go to my real

who when he finished his round yesterday thought that he
was at seven under par, which he was when he

and had a little conversation with him about something that
happened all the way back on the fifth hole. Frank,

Yeah, you're well, you're not a golf watcher. That's okay.
So all the way back on the fifth hole, Royal Birkdale,
the rough, this fescue grass that grow on the coastlines
over there is somewhere between thigh and waist high. Its tall,
nasty stuff. And Bryson hit a ball in there, t

shot I think it was, and he goes in there.
Somebody finds his ball. The people are over there looking
for it. They find the ball. Bryson walks over there,
and as every golfer does when they get into a
situation where they're in rough and they're trying to figure
out how to get out and where to get out,
he walks up, stands behind the ball, takes a look

at what his options are going to be, and then
comes back and hits the ball. To make a long
story short, well, after lengthy deliberation and consideration and questioning
back and forth amongst themselves, this rules committee over there
decided that Bryson, when he stepped in behind his ball,

(07:59):
had changed the way that the grass there. Bear in mind,
this stuff's almost up to his belt, and that he
had changed the way the grass lays a little bit.
And for that the official ruling is inadvertent, inadvertently improving

his lie by just standing there on the grass. You
can't step between blades of grass, and it's thick. It's nasty,
thick stuff. And to just to be able to look
at his ball and assess the opportunity or the options
he had there, he had to walk in, he had
to get behind it, he had to do all those things.

And yet, inadvertently, by the rules of golf, he had
improved his lie and that cost him two shots. So
now here he is three shots off the lead instead
of being one off the lead. He's in the third
or so third maybe fourth pairing to go off today

because he lost those two places, lost those two strokes,
and that put him down in that typher sixth place
rather than alone in second, and just on and on
they go, on and on they go. I really disappointed
that that they according to what I've read so far

and several different sites, the way the rule is written,
the rules people had no choice really but to assess
him that two shot penalty, and that, as far as
I'm concerned, puts that rule right on a front burner
for a little reconsideration, because as high as the rough

is in a lot of these major tournaments, it would
be almost impossible to even walk in there and maybe
try to just get a stance, even try to take
a stance. It may move some of that grass in
the wrong direction. And if that's it didn't improve his

lie at all, I don't believe it did. I mean,
the grass is in standing in a different direction. It's
standing in a different direction. But it's not like he
went in there with a weed eater strapped to the
front of his shoe. It's just that's one of the
rules and the one that man, I'm gonna climb onto
the soapbox for this one too. The one rule in

golf that I think needs to be changed most is
that if your ball is you hit a drive, you
hit the best drive you've hit all day, and it
is right in the middle of the fairway or left
center or right center, or exactly where you wanted to
hit it, and it lands, and it rolls a little
ways down the fairway, and what do you know, it

rolls right into the deep, ugly divot of some guy
who came before you and has rendered your ball almost
unplayable because the person who made that divot didn't fill
it back with sand, didn't do anything to improve it
and fix it and patch the big scar he'd put

on the face of that hole. And you can't move
it out of there. You can't move it six inches
out of there. You can't move it one inch out
of there. You can't touch that ball. That I think
is one of the most unnecessarily penal rules in the
game of golf. The rest of it I can understand.
In fact, I'm going to try to find a copy

of the latest edition of Oh. I don't remember what
they called it, but there's a book that I used
to get every year from the USGA, Decisions in the
Rule of in the Rules of Golf, something like that,
where it outlines really crazy scenarios that have happened to
people and have written in actually, or it's happened at

a big tournament and it's been documented well there. But
people say, Okay, here are the here's the situation, here's
what happened, And then the rules officials at the USGA,
I guess they just sit around and have a couple
of beers and go over these things. The rules decisions
right up the exact way that should have been handled.
Whether it's a ball that's almost under or almost over

the out of bounds line, whether the out of bounds
is is somewhat hard to distinguish from inbounds, all these things.
Animal holes in the ground, if a ball falls into
one of those, there's protocol for that, all of these things,
but that one of mine, that dim it in the

fair way, Move the ball, Move the ball six inches left,
six inches right, no closer to the hole. Play away.
No penalty, No penalty. There shouldn't be one for hitting
the where you're supposed to hit it. That should not
be penal at all, but it is.

an e bike on your dove hunt, you can relocate

to anywhere on the property in minutes, not maybe a
two or three hundred yard sweaty walk where you're tired
when you get there and you've scared a bunch of
birds because you've been in the middle of the field
for ten minutes. That's not bad. How many times have
you set up somewhere in a dove field you thought
it was a great spot, and then you see the
birds tracking down a fence line or a tree line

two or three hundred yards away, and oh boy, it
sure seems like a long walk when it's ninety degrees outside.
But if you hopped on an ee bike, it'd cut
across that field. You'd be there and about what minute
and a half birds are none the wiser and you're
blasting away. And that The second thing, of course, is
the deer hunting advantages, and he gives you. We'll talk

the water is in good shape down there, and I'm
going to base that only on the number of people
who are standing, say, in the last forty yards, maybe
fifty yards of the end of that jetty. And I'm
going to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten,
twenty thirty forty fifty I would estimate modestly and conservatively

sixty people in the last forty yards of that jetty.
And now the whoever's on the camera right now just
pulled it back all the way to the beach, and
it's steady, crowded, the water is calm. It's hard to
tell the color right now. The sun's not quite high
enough on it to see it in this camera and

from this camera angle. But I looked at it pretty
hard yesterday afternoon when the sun was on the other
side of it, and boy did it looked pretty. It
didn't look Caribbean blue, Caribbean green, but it looked troudy.
It looked really, really fishy, and I actually I almost
made a run down there. Yesterday. I opted instead, though,

to go work with a guy on his golf game
a little bit. I'm no instructor, but a little bit
of what Tommy O'Brien has taught me over the years
has rubbed off him and Jim Murphy both. Between the
two of them, I have absorbed the information that might
qualify me to be somebody who could talk about golf

and help somebody. Really, but all I did yesterday was
tweak a couple of little tiny things in his swing
that actually did seem to make it work better. So

one hundred and ten to learn half of what I've
learned and forgotten from Jim and from Tommy and those

most of golf's bad decisions wind up being bogies or worse.

avoid triples, that's that's a good thing. Try to try
to make decisions that enable you to do that. I'm

surf all the way from practically from San Luis Pass
to I don't know to Matta Gorda, and he'll he'll

know what's going on down there. Based on fishing that
area for a bajillion years, I'm very confident that there
are trout in the surf, And the reason that whole
end of the jetty is packed down is because everybody
down there is catching trout. Well, maybe not everybody, but
the people who are throwing live bait almost certainly are.

And by gosh, if I were out there and I
were chucking the lures, I would want a chunk. I
think I'd be catching my share as well. I'm pretty
good at fishing that jetty. And actually I learned a
old dogg that I am. I learned a new trick
last year from a guy who has perfected really a strategy.

(22:37):
It's not necessarily one that will work every day, because
that there have to be certain conditions. There has to
be a good amount of bait, of small bait in
the channel, the water in the channel has to be
better than average clear, and at that point it's just
up to the fish wanting to bite what he's throwing

(22:57):
at him. And it's pretty not only an effective way
to fish it, but it's a fun way to fish
that channel as well. Fun way to fish the jetty.
I've tried. I've tried it with some success on the
surf side, on the on the gulf side of that jetty,
and I think it would be equally effective if you

just had the patience to do it. Maybe we'll get
into that at some point in the hour. What do
I have? Okay, I've got that taken care of good heavens,
you know what. Okay, Frankie, I'm gonna take it back

gonna tell you about the an upcoming event down in
Texas City that is very very important to Jerry TK,

down that way, it might be worth going and attending

the way out. The Coastal Conservation Association has still got
its Star Tournament. Summer Long Star Tournament runs all the

way for Memorial Data Labor Day. And in that tournament,
you've got an option or a choice, a chance, let's
call it, to win a lot of different prizes that
are all very valuable up to and including a package
for I think there's still several of these available, at
least a couple package that includes a pickup truck, a boat,

a trailer to put your boat on, and a motor
to push it. The very very valuable package for the
lucky few who catch a specially tagged redfish from this
year's tags. And then there's also a second kind of
a second place runner up thing that's still a pretty
dog on good prize, presuming that most of us would

have a truck or something that could pull a boat.
Then the actual prize in that second category or the
second tier if you will, a speckle trout is Wait
a minute, it's redfish. It's tagged redfish. Why did I space?
I'm so focused on this jetty, I can't talk straight.

Let me put that screen down for a minute and
focus on the redfish, the tag redfish that CCA's got
out there. Running around the second tier of tags gets
you a boat, motor, and trailer, and then fast forward
through the other adult categories, because I want to get
to the kids while I've still got some time here.
And that is the kids categories in the Star Tournament
are worth scholarships, and even if you finish fifth as

a kid in any category, there's still some money for
you to tuck away for college. If you finish first
in that category, thirty grand. Thirty grand goes in the bank,
and by the time you're old enough to go to college,
that should cover you a lot of things that mom
and dad could do with not having to save money

for college by themselves. A new boat. Who knows. All
you got to do is sign up. You have to
be a member of CCA. You have to register for
the Star and kids can register for like ten bucks.
It's just or maybe even I'm not sure sure exactly
what the number is. Go look at it for yourself

only learn about the Star Tournament, but learn about all
the incredible things that CCA has done in the past

said that the Beachfront's beach is trout green and he's
pretty sold about one hundred and twenty dozen croakers.

Well this morning, all ready, I have mixed emotions about that,

I know, you know, I know you can imagine you're
probably at the beach Front. All you can hear is
a bunch of croaking.

Yeah, It's like you're in the middle of a bunch
of bullfrogs.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
Yeah, he said a lot of people have been really
doing good down on Beach Drive, which is the rock
where the rocks are at the base of the jetties
where you have to pretty much jump over the rocks
to get down to the edge of the surf line
on off the rocks.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
Yeah, I was gonna say on beach Driude, the other
day there was the water was up to the rocks
and probably a foot and a half deep there. I
kind of liked the looks of that. I hadn't really
taken a hard look at that until a few days ago,
and I can't like what I saw.

Speaker 3 (35:02):
I fished off it off of them. Done good. I've
caught red fish and even caught snook off those rocks.

Speaker 1 (35:07):
Really believe it or not? Really?

Speaker 3 (35:09):
Yeah, when was this, Kevin? Yep, that's been a couple
of years back. But it's that I was out there
fishing for trout, yeah, bouncing them a mullet off, and
I was just sitting on the rocks, right on the
edge of the rocks with my bait bucket. Yeah, right there,
fishing off the rocks and catching trout and occasional slot
red And then every now and then there'd be a

little fat snook swim along come and would eat a bait.

Speaker 1 (35:35):
About sixteen eighteen maybe twenty inch or something there some.

Speaker 3 (35:38):
Of the yeah, fun fight that just let them go,
And of course, yeah, it's it's it's always exciting to
catch one because it's something you don't usually see caught off,
especially in the beach rout like that. Now.

Speaker 1 (35:50):
I really hope that that's an upward trend and not
the last two or three snook that are going to
be up ever on the surf side beach. But man,
if we can get you more of them, and maybe
just get some commons up here and a little bit
bigger fish. That would be so cool.

Speaker 3 (36:07):
Well, you know, whenever I was out at San Luis
Pass working out there as a ranger, I was seeing
more and more snook caught with regularity, really off the
walls there at the at the the County Park. I'll
be bull kids wown, yeah, quite regularly. There's one kid,
Devin Williams. He was young kid back then. He's actually

(36:31):
gone on and become a guide now, but he that
that little bugger. He if if there was a snook
in the area, he was gonna find it.

Speaker 1 (36:38):
Wow, man, that's so cool.

Speaker 3 (36:41):
Yeah, there were a couple of days I'd be down
there fishing on my lunch break. One day, back to
back cast I caught him about sixteen eighteen inches.

Speaker 1 (36:50):
I've been missing that. I got to move closer to
the beach yep now.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
But the tournament coming up next weekend. The Bag of Donuts,
believe it or not, that's the name of the band
oh Okay to be playing. I questioned that myself whenever
I first saw it. Dont's man, But we'll be going.
I'll be down there and starting next Thursday setting up

(37:17):
the waist station. Fishing starts Thursday morning and I'll be
setting the scales up and opening the scales up at
about eleven o'clock on Thursday, and I think it's till
the stay open till like five or six that evening.
And that's pretty much the hours. The hours each day, Thursday, Friday,
and Saturday. I think the Saturday that closed up five

and then we start tabulating and getting everything ready for
the awards.

All right, well, I hope you had a good weather

Yeah. Pirates Cove Marina is a brand new marina that
matter of fact, Jeff de Rosia is the tournament director
for this tournament, has built that new marina down there,
and last year they had giant like circuit circus canopy
set up that were two of them at the end
were about the size of a football field. And since

then this since last year, they have actually built a
new pavilion down there that all of this is going
to be held up underneath this year. So there. Yeah,
they're making a lot of improvements down there. Sergeants kind
of kind of turning around for the better. I know
that they've got a bunch of food vendors that are

going to be down there.

They have.

Last year there was a kid that had eliminade stand
that he was probably seven or eight years old, and
that he was being featured on the news. They were
down there interviewing him. Young entrepreneur. But a lot of
different activities for the kids. Great family friendly environment. Anybody
that's looking for something to do next weekend, even if

you're not a fisherman, come down there and watch us
away the fish at the way station and uh see
all the different things that you can do down there
are a nice little getaway down there.

Oh, I know, well, yeah, I guess you you do,
don't you so Anyway, here's the deal. I'm thinking last night,
we're only six weeks away from Duve's season, and for
some reason, just this little light bulb went off in
my head and said, hey, you know, as good as
those e bikes are for deer hunting, that would be
a handy thing to have around. If I'm sitting in

one corner of a three hundred or four hundred acre
pasture and I see doves just blowing over another corner,
I don't want to walk three or four hundred yards
in ninety five degree heat and grab carry all my stuff.
But if I had an e bike, man if people
come in there thinking about.

That, right, Oh? Absolutely so. So the new shop that
we're opening, uh is inside outlaw archery in the woodlands,
and these guys are all about honting.

Yeah, So it's it's still been real interesting talking to
these guys and you know, preparing for hunting season and
all that kind of stuff. So we're real excited about

They go together so well, Holy cow Man absolutely talk
to me about specifically about what types of bikes would

Okay, okay, So we've got a couple of new exciting
products that we're launching in the new store over there.
One of the products we're launching is called the Tank
and this is a four wheel electric ATV type of unit.
It has four independent wheels. Each one of those wheels

will pretty much go anywhere. You can put you a
little basket on the back of it to carry all
your gear and everything in, which would be great for
either deer hunting or dove hunting on the beaches and

by four inch wide tire bike. This all wheel drive

What accessories are there now? E bikes have been out
a long time and the people who make them have
kind of figured out what they needed to add on.
What are some of the accessories you can put on
an E bike that you would recommend for somebody who's
going to be using it for hunting fishing.

Well, probably the most important thing is a gun rack
or a bowt rack would be the two most important
things there. The rambow models you can hook the trailer
up to them and pull your game behind you, throw
a deer on it and pull it out of the woods.

(50:51):
They make fishing rod holders that you can attach to
the bike baskets to carry your gear in mean, pretty much,
anything you need in the field you can't put on
these bikes and states.

Speaker 1 (51:06):
Yeah, I would imagine a lot of those accessories that
are coming out commercially are something that somebody put together
in their garage because they needed it, and one thing
led to another and it just became a really common item. Huh.

Speaker 4 (51:20):
Absolutely.

We had a guy come in the shop here a
couple of months ago the BIB bike, and I can't
you know, we probably put as much accessories on that
bike as the bike hawks. You I need this basket
and I need that, and I'm like, okay, whatever, we'll
fix it up for you.

The fishing rod holders, the whole works. So give it
a couple more years, you'll be selling lyft kits for bikes, right,
got to get over those big rocks at the bottom
of the ravine whatever. I don't know, So you're going
to be The new story is actually within the archery place, right,

I've been in the store actually a long long time ago.
My mother in law lives up that way and I've
been in the store once. When I was up there,

a golf course and I saw Outlaw Archery and it
pulled in. Take a look. Talk to them for a
little while. Really good people in there. Huh.

Absolutely, it's a fantastic like there's actually four businesses located
within Outlaw, or of them. So yeah, pretty amazing place.
I remember the acts growing upstairs. Oh wow, escape rooms
and a fishing store of Yeah, it's a really neat
place to visit.

They got it all covered, don't they do. Tell me
a little bit more about the dirt bikes, will you,
because that I used to ride dirt bikes really, you know,
the the gas gasoline ones. But what's the difference in
the the e bikes. And I'm guessing it's mostly acceleration.

Speaker 4 (52:58):
Huh. Torque Uh, if you've been in anything electric, I
mean when when you turn the switch on, I mean,
it's it's instant power, and you know, you don't have
to worry about the maintenance of gasoline and oil and
uh you know, I've had people bring uh, gasoline powered

bikes and shop mor re pairs of Man. You know,
I'm all about gasoline in my cars and trucks, but
I don't want to smell in my shop.

That's very good.

Speaker 4 (53:33):
Yeah, yeah, but they're just they're awesome as a instant power.
You know that they're not letting them race against the
gas powered bikes because they have so much torque. They're
coming out with their their own classes, classifications as far
as uh, you know, dirt bike tracks and that kind

of stuff.

Speaker 1 (53:53):
With automobile. Yeah, same with cars, you know, the race cars.
They have their own little e bike categories. What Wayne
Arrington here from air Ride Bikes, what is the biggest
misconception about e bikes?

Speaker 4 (54:08):
The biggest misconception is you're cheating. You can't get any exercise.

Speaker 1 (54:14):
On an e bike.

Speaker 4 (54:15):
Oh okay, I tell people I beg to differ with
you as long as you've got an e BikeE with
what we call.

Speaker 3 (54:21):
It torque sensing on it.

Speaker 4 (54:24):
Torque sensing, it's all about the amount of force you
put into the pedal as to how much the motor
kicks in and assists you. So I tell people, I said,
you can get just as much exercise on the e
bike as regular bike. But the difference is that allows
you to go farther and faster. When you get twenty
miles out from your house and you don't feel like

(54:47):
pedaling to go back, then you hit the throngle and
go home again, you know. Yeah, So that's probably the
biggest misconception. People think they don't get exercise and the
number one thing they've gotten off the couch to begin
with it because there's a lot of older people that
wouldn't be on bikes today, me being one of them. Yeah,

(55:08):
if it weren't for the power, I mean, just to
assist you to get up those hills, because as we
get older, it's a struggle getting up the hill. You know.

Speaker 1 (55:18):
Yeah, No, I'm having more trouble getting up the hills,
Believe me, I guarantee I am. I am looking for
a question that Frankie says he sent me but it
hasn't shown up yet in my email. Hold on one second,
somebody wanted to know, and I'm going to find out
what it is. Oh this, come on, I got to
get that opened up. I got to get to hear,

(55:38):
and I'm going to get to it in just one second.
He pushed us up and finally, finally we get here.
So are e bikes okay on public fishing piers? That's it? Yeah,
like maybe the surf side jetti, that would be a
nice thing to get me to the end of that jetty.
Are they allowed to clear know or do you know?

You know, that's a good question. Off the top of
my head. I don't know. What I would do is
contact the people that have the peers and ask them. Yeah,
you know, there's a lot of different regulations that the
basic regulation from a state perspective is to be street

legal maximums. These twenty eight miles an hour in pedalis
is twenty miles an hour throttle only in a maximum
motor capacity of seven and fifty walks. And then everybody
else has their you know, different cities have their different regulations,
the national parks have different regulations. So it's always a

(56:40):
good idea just to contact the place where you're going
and find out what are the REGs for.

Another question in here from Roberts says that do these
bikes have a power band? A power band? I'm not sure.

That's that's That's the reason I didn't explain it because

How that maybe if we're talking about torque, yeah, it's
gonna be torque related.

I just like where there's a maximum, you know, a
peak power or something like that. I don't know, Robert,
help us out, man, I need to know more.

Right when you start talking about peak power, every bike
is is different. It's all depends on the motor that's
in the bike and the battery that it's with the bike.
It's is going to determine what we call the torque,
the Newton meters of torque.

Speaker 1 (57:38):
Right, Okay, of course you're.

Speaker 4 (57:40):
You're the bigger the motor, the more torque you're gonna
get out.

Speaker 1 (57:45):
So I wonder if you could when do you think
it will happen? Wayne? And you know it will if
you stop and think about it. Somebody's gonna try to
take a try to take a motor out of a
tesla and put it on two wheels.

Speaker 4 (58:00):
Yeah, yeah, that's certainly impossibility. I think what's coming pretty
close is this tank because I'm amazed with the power
that this sting has and the thing that is with
those independent wills, that thing will turn thy sixty work.

Speaker 1 (58:17):
Oh yeah, a good point.

You can turn one hundred and eighty degrees and go
the opposite direction without needing a lot of space to
turn around.

Speaker 1 (58:25):
It's just incredible. Okay, we have Frankie, my capable research assistant,
said the power band has to do with with what Frankie,
I'm sorry.

What I'm seeing here is that it's like the range
of the RPM.

Speaker 1 (58:42):
It's like a characteristic of the bike itself and not
like an actual part. Yeah I knew it wasn't a part.
It's a reading or a measurement of something. So of
a power and torque is what I'm saying.

Okay, right, right, Well, I say as far as the torque,
each each bike is totally different, right. You know, the
smaller bikes are putting out torque of around fifty newton
meters of torque I have. I've got a new bike
we just brought on. I'm trying to remember which which

bike that was? Now from a venting that's putting out
one hundred and forty newton meters a torn I'm sorry,
one hundred and twenty newton meters.

That sounds like a lot. Is that a lot?

much torque, uh, if you're a gear hunter and it

Is glad to kind of glad to put a voice
with a name. So first off, what on earth was
the major you had in school that led you to
a master's thesis on beach erosion and accretion.

Speaker 2 (01:08:22):
I well, thank you Doug for letting me be on
a listener of this show for for decades. Oh God,
really appreciate you. I will tell you that I was
born and raised in Clearwater, Florida, and I've been fascinated
with water since I was a child, and I got

(01:08:42):
my masters in ocean engineering because of my my real
desire for the water. And I'll just say this about
where the idea of the surf zone and all that.
I believe that and take this for what I say.
I believe one of the gods created the greatest creations

(01:09:02):
is the breaking wave. Yeah, I like it. And for
most people, why I say that is they take for
granted for the fact that a wave breaks over and
does a curl and does all these things. And as
a surfer, you know that what you're seeing there is

(01:09:24):
water actually forming into somewhat of a solid and creating
a curling wave that forms a tunnel and a shoot
that supports the human on a board. And You're right,
it's the most fascinating thing I've ever encountered. And I
believe it's God's way of saying, Hey, you know those

(01:09:45):
normal things that I do for you, they're very special.

Speaker 1 (01:09:48):
Yeah. Yeah, that is a very good way to look
at it. It's a very an eye opening way to
perceive a wave. And if you don't believe it's a solid,
just just get hit in the face by a lip
or or something like that.

Speaker 5 (01:10:01):
It's pretty And for the sake of this discussion, we'll
just say this.

Speaker 2 (01:10:07):
When I look at waves, I look at them as energy.
They are forced and I.

Speaker 5 (01:10:16):
Can give you an example of that.

Speaker 2 (01:10:18):
As you being a surfer as well. If you take
the iceberg type of idea, the curl that you're surfing
is the part that you see above the surface, the
tip of the iceberg. A lot of the energy is
below that, and it's like a large tumbler running along
the bottom of the of the sand, turning and turning.

(01:10:41):
And if you fall into that, and you know this
that they will put you into a churning effect, taking
you downward, up and around, and it's spiraling all the
way up the beach. That is so much energy that
is dissipating as it goes up. That causes all of
the things we're about to describe.

Speaker 1 (01:11:01):
Yeah, yeah, And for fishermen, for a surfer, anybody who's
ever served head high waves are bigger knows all too
well what it's like to just be tumbled you don't
know which ways up for about five, six, seven, eight seconds,
depending on where you are, and you finally, I started
surfing before leashes, so I know what it's like to

(01:11:24):
get tumbled for all that time, pop up and see
your board already fifty yards away and headed farther away,
have to swim back to that stage you've.

Speaker 2 (01:11:33):
Got and say, you've got to physically feel this. These
these things called energy forces, right, oh god, yeah. And
these energy forces have the capability of I believe, in
the state of Texas. Yea of the three hundred and
sixty seven miles of the Texas coast, four point one

(01:11:53):
feet of it erodes every year because of this energy.
You know, that's thousands tons of sand being deposited and redeposited. Now,
let's go on and let's let me describe you some
things for everybody so they also understand how this works.

(01:12:13):
Waves are generated by the amount of inclination that that
area has as the wave energy comes in, and that
as it comes in, that that angle and inclination determines
that wavefront. Now, that wavefront can cause earlier curls, it

(01:12:37):
can cause what's known as humbling waves, and then you
can get waves where you get where you get at
the disposition of a high tide, where you have back
energy from the wave before it coming back into that wave,
and it's very disruptive. Right now, those kind of waves
create sandbars, and this is where our fishermen are here week.

Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Okay, now they're going to perk up.

Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
There we go, right now, they're going to perk up.
Let me please say this before we continue about this.

Speaker 1 (01:13:09):
Okay, let me.

Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
Make sure everybody understands if you if you if you
fish a certain area, never ever take for granted that
the week before you go that it's the same the
when you come back. Yeah, there are so many things
happening during that time. I honestly always tell everybody, if

(01:13:33):
you have children, if you have elderly, if you have if.

Speaker 5 (01:13:37):
You're a fisherman, when.

Speaker 2 (01:13:39):
You first arrived there, look with your own eyes at
what you see out there. And the other thing is,
without your equipment, walk up through the surf zone and
feel how the currents are running side to side and
in and out, and feel and see if those things
are changed from the last time you were out there,
because you can't afford to be in that amount of

(01:14:01):
energy with all the things in your hand until you
know what it is, because there's a huge probability that
this area you've been fishing has changed.

Speaker 5 (01:14:11):
And for small children, elderly and so forth.

Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
Currents long long shore currents, these are currents that run
down the side and those are due to angular waves
coming in can be put cuts real close to the beach.
But what's more dangerous, and you know this is as
you go out and you've got a sandbar, you may
have another sandbar formation after it that you may not

(01:14:37):
have had before, or all of them have shifted.

Speaker 1 (01:14:42):
That does happen a wow, and.

Speaker 2 (01:14:44):
That happens right, and your fishermen want to know where
those sandbars are because the smart ones know that's where
the fish are going to go into there, because as
we know, fish try to put protect their energy, so
they go into these places of subsidence where the energy

(01:15:05):
goes over them and actually the waves bring the nutrients
and things.

Speaker 1 (01:15:12):
To them without them having to release a lot of
It's very similar to the way a rainbow trout sits
in a stream unless the current go over them.

Speaker 2 (01:15:21):
Right, exactly right, exactly right, and then the young and
the young get bred in there, and that's how they
stay protected because the larger fists can't get into them
right right, So it's a breeding area. That's all these things.
And also after storm events they're in there eating all
the nutrients and so forth that's been deposited in the water.

Speaker 1 (01:15:43):
Now I have looked up.

Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
And I had to find this on Noah Doug that
there are no real statistics about the idea. We don't
keep that in the United States, but Noah does keep
surf stone fatalities, and the number one, by far tenfold.

Speaker 1 (01:16:05):
Are rib currents, oh yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (01:16:09):
Follow followed by high surf, and then the rest of
them are are not all that and they all occur
during the summertime, and that's.

Speaker 5 (01:16:18):
When we have major storm events.

Speaker 2 (01:16:21):
Now, for all the listeners out there, a riptide occurs
when you have let's say a spit or a jetty
and the side waves come in and they bounce off
think of them again as energy, and they move along
the coastline and you have another set coming into that

(01:16:41):
same permutation coming out. What happens then is that that
energy reflects off of it and bounces back out. When
it does, it forms with the other waves and forms
the current straight back out.

Speaker 4 (01:16:57):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:16:58):
These are the most dangerous things that anyone can get
involved with. And at this point you know all the
rules about if you get caught in a riptide. I've
heard you recite them before. If you'd like to recite
them now, well I would.

Speaker 1 (01:17:11):
I would say just to let the water take you
wherever it's going to take you until you don't feel
that force against you. Then just try to make your
way slowly back to the beach, but don't try to
go against it. I never go against it. That's absolutely correct.

Speaker 5 (01:17:25):
It's impossible.

Speaker 2 (01:17:26):
We're talking about energy that's so strong it would move
a semi truck, and let alone that is pushing you out.
And I would say this to anybody who's along a beachline.
It's not normal for most people. If you're sitting at
the beach to see somebody way out that's by themselves.

(01:17:48):
Take the percentage and say, if they're out there, there's
a huge possibility that they need.

Speaker 1 (01:17:54):
Help and they don't want to be out there anymore.

Speaker 5 (01:17:58):
That's correct, right, So for us as.

Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
We observe the beach, and we should be because it's
a beautiful thing. You see someone out there and they're
way out there, and that looks abnormal, it's probably abnormal.

Speaker 1 (01:18:12):
They need help. Yeah, get the lifeguards. Get the lifeguards.

Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
Now that being said, when you get out, what happens
again in the circulation pattern where these waves are coming in, Doug,
they'll eventually you'll start drifting down the beach. So if
you ever get caught in a rip tide, the.

Speaker 1 (01:18:31):
First thing you say is you're right.

Speaker 2 (01:18:33):
You relax, You try to float, but take a spot
on the beach and look and see if you're moving
and how far you're moving. There'll be a time when
that movement starts slowing down, and that's when you can
start coming if you've got the energy to come back here.
Now let's talk about fishing.

Speaker 1 (01:18:53):
Yeah, Well, I tell you, hey, do me a favor.
Can you stick around for a while because I want
to I need to take a break here, but I
want to come back and let's let's get the fishing
side and try to teach people how to read the
breaks in the surf, read the brakes in the in
the bars and whatnot. Okay, all right, yes, sir, right,
no problem, perfect, stand by one second? All right, on

and proceeds all the way out to six hundred yards

shooting where you can take the kids out there and
let them pop caps all day long, knocking over little
bunnies and squirrel little metal bunnies and squirrels, and without

breaking the on AMMO. They've got professional instruction in every
shooting discipline, and they're very easy to find and plenty
of room. They're the biggest largest non military shooting facility
in the entire state of Texas, and that covers a
lot of big places where a lot of people go

the one who wrote the thesis on this beach erosion
and accretion due to storms and whatnot. But as a fisherman,

I'm looking at the Jetti Park live cam right now.
We've got very small, like maybe shin high waves, maybe
a knee highwave against the rocks, and then down the
beach a little ways. Maybe a long border could get
a ride. I don't know. There's a few people out
there hoping and wishing for bigger waves. But if I'm
standing on the beach and I'm trying to figure out

(01:21:04):
where the bars are, the bars and the guts are easy, Okay,
we can figure that out. But I want to find
a little cut in a bar somewhere. What am I
looking for?

Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
Okay? Typically I will just say this for the surf.

Speaker 1 (01:21:22):
Type of fishermen.

Speaker 2 (01:21:25):
Really need to get around low tide when the tide
comes down, because at that time there's not enough water
coming over the different sandbars that may be coming in.
It will also show you where cuts are being developed.
And when I say cuts, this is also where you
can see riptides. If you see a wavefront and in

(01:21:49):
the middle of that wavefront you see what appears to
be a dead area. What you see there is possibly
a riptide, or it's the idea. It's the where it's
trying to develop into another sort of sand bar, and
it's increating the sand out of the first sandbar into
the back sandbar. So what you want, I will tell

(01:22:13):
you this, and I want you to whether you agree
or not, I believe that surf fishermen probably have to
be the best fishermen in the world because their environment
changes constantly, as does the species that they've got. The
barometric everything affects them. Everything don't effect surf fishermen. Yeah,

(01:22:37):
you have to kind of be in there at low tide.

Speaker 5 (01:22:40):
Because at high tide there's too much water coming in.

Speaker 2 (01:22:43):
And the thing about high tide is it's also going
to bring sand and it's going to make more.

Speaker 5 (01:22:48):
Changes, and that changes happens over time.

Speaker 1 (01:22:51):
One of the things I wanted to going out, let
me let me get to this point real quickly, especially
at a little bit lower tide. So you're watching this
wave and ideally they're nice long little strips of wave
coming in like there are this morning, and this this
wave is coming forward and it starts to peek up,
and it starts to peek up, and like you say,

(01:23:12):
there's a little, a little point there where within that
wave there's just a dead spot like you're talking about.
And from what I understand, as that water moving forward
or the the energy moving forward, pushes that most of
that wave up onto that bar. If there's a gut

(01:23:32):
in that bar, that water just stays on the bottom basically, right,
that's correct.

Speaker 5 (01:23:37):
Yeah, that's absolutely correct.

Speaker 1 (01:23:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
Okay, so that's your's that's your visual queue. Yeah, that
there's something that so your visual queue is is almost
like common sense. If you see something wave breaking, you
know there's an object there. If you see that there's
something isn't there, you know there's something that's more of
a depression or deeper water, even water now jetties, for instance,

(01:24:05):
one time our thought things to think about with jetties.
Wave energy causes scouring, and scouring causes these deposits along
the side of them that are much deeper. The best
redfish fishing I've ever had in my life was in Louisiana.
We fished the outside of the jetty about one thousand

(01:24:27):
feet from the front edge back in and they were
all sitting down in there. It was a cooler water,
and all they were doing is they were sitting there
waiting for when the water was turbulent coming around the
edge of that jetty, it brought them right into them.

Speaker 1 (01:24:45):
And they were just they would feed.

Speaker 2 (01:24:46):
And we just nailed them on that. Now, jetties are
what I'm also saying is a target area that you
need to look at because with angular waves that come in,
those angular waves will come out and if you've got
any sort of channeling of water outward as you would
think as a rip tide, especially if it's coming out

(01:25:09):
of a bay that may have fresh water coming out
of it, it will push all that straight out. And
that when that turbulent area is if you can move
out into the jetty, stay out of the you know,
the boat zone, and fish that area at the right time.
The amount of turbulence and material in there, you're gonna
hit bigger fish, so they're coming in to be predators

(01:25:30):
on the smaller fish.

Speaker 1 (01:25:33):
That's good stuff, It's all good stuff. Sure, how often Mark,
how often I mean you talk about this just being
a constant state of erosion almost where everything's going to change.
What every two or three tide changes or does it
take a little bit more turbulence to really move a

(01:25:53):
lot of sand?

Speaker 5 (01:25:57):
Typically what you let's say with that.

Speaker 2 (01:26:00):
A storm event of any type, if you get a
high tide on a full moon, you're going to have
the largest amount of water come in baronmeg pressure changes vioometrically,
you get more water coming in, the amount of water
that comes in changes that because it's going to pick
up more stand and it's going to carry it. Now,

(01:26:22):
you made a good point. I always say beach erosion.
There's also beach accretion. The standard it's picked up from
somewhere else gets moved another place. It may be just
they're on the same amount of beach, and depending on
the wayfront coming in at an angle, it can move
the sand either move forward backward. But most of the

(01:26:43):
time it's kind of a normal state.

Speaker 5 (01:26:46):
But the state of Texas loses.

Speaker 1 (01:26:48):
So much sand. So this is Florida.

Speaker 2 (01:26:50):
That's why I got it, That's why I was paid
by the Army Corps to do. My thesis was this
become a legal battle because people's land they market. You know,
one year it's there, in the next year it's gone.

Speaker 1 (01:27:07):
Yeah, it used to be waterfront property. Now it's just water.

Speaker 2 (01:27:11):
Right. So let's let's real quick because I know, okay,
let's talk about this when you have, When you have
and you're doing this.

Speaker 5 (01:27:24):
You're doing your surf stuff as a fisherman.

Speaker 2 (01:27:27):
Let me just give you a couple of things that
I've learned and I've learned from other fishermen.

Speaker 1 (01:27:32):
You're going to be dealing with murky water.

Speaker 2 (01:27:35):
All right, your lures should be as bright as they
can be and they should make noise, okay or both right?

Speaker 1 (01:27:47):
Right, live and cut baits.

Speaker 2 (01:27:50):
Uh. You what you're gonna do there is if it's
got a scent, if you want if you want it
to work the best. If I'm if I'm working a jetty,
I've got to put it down into that hole it's
right next to the jetty. If I'm working a sandbar,
I need that to go over that sandbar into that
that area where it's a little more less energy, so

(01:28:13):
that that baits taste or the smell gets into that water.
They'll come to it, trust me, they'll come to it.

Speaker 1 (01:28:20):
Okay. Now.

Speaker 2 (01:28:22):
The other part of this is depending on how that
that bottom is running, and depending on what you're looking for,
you need to use either a heavier fishing gear or
you may need to shift during the tide because you
may want to start, let's say, at a at a bottom.

You know, maybe you maybe you change. You may change.

Speaker 1 (01:28:46):
You may go from.

Speaker 2 (01:28:47):
Flounder to just snapper, right, and and those kind of
things change. You're perfectly aware of the fact that you
just can't guess these things. Yeah, you've got to have
an understanding that these energy that's moving through there will
affect how your gear is affecting how those fish look

at it. Typically I would I would say, depending on
where you are. And this again, this is why I
think surf fishermen or so amazing is they can choose
whether I'm going to go to the bottom, I'm going
to go to the top, if I'm going to go fast.
But again in the surf area, shiny noisy things or

bait that you can get that has smelt behind that
sandboar or down inside that scouring area next to the
to the uh uh, either a pure or so forth.
That's your best bets.

talked about this very early in the program. After he
finished yesterday, he thought, great, man, I'm seven under par.
I'm hooked up. I'm going to be in the final pairing,
and he and I are going to go out, and
Herbert and I are going to go out. Aber, I
guess it is, and just wear it out well. Afterward

he was informed by the rules committee over there, some
bunch of guys from the RNA who determined that he inadvertently,
it says in the stories, inadvertently improved his lie. He
didn't mean to do it, he didn't do it with
any male intent or expectation of making it easier to

hit his shot, and all he did was just walk
up behind his ball, which every golfer does to a
sess where he is and what he's dealing with. He
had to get close to it to even look down
upon it and see the ball and see where it
was in this thigh high to waist high fescue around

around the course. I that's a rule that's going to
be another one of the rules that I'm going to
add to my list of problems with the rules of golf,
because if you didn't do anything intentionally, and they have video.
Now that the top tier groups are followed by probably

half a dozen cameras on every shot they hit, the
networks want every angle they can get on everything that's
going on, and not just with the shots that are hit,
but with anything that's happening around the ball before or
after the shot. And that's how the rules committee over
there got the opportunity to really, in my opinion, over

(01:35:59):
analyze what happened. I think they because of because of
Brian Shambeau de Shambou being who he is, they may
have gone in there kind of looking with the intention
of finding you talk about intention, and maybe they were
intent on finding some way they could they could penalize him.

(01:36:19):
Now under the current rules of golf and exactly how
they're written, the decision, if you look at everything, is valid.
That's what That's what most of the people on the
internet are saying. They're not saying it's right, but by
the way the rules were written five hundred years ago, uh,

(01:36:42):
they're correct. And it cost him two shots in a
major championship for inadvertently doing something. He didn't move the ball.
The ball never moved. The only thing that happened was
that when he was standing behind the ball to make
sure he didn't move the ball. I'm certain of that.
There's no way he would have wanted to walk up

(01:37:04):
there close enough where some of those pickup sticks could
have moved and moved the ball with them, so he
was standing behind it and incidentally not even a well,
I guess accidentally, some of that grass was laid forward.
In the before pictures, all the grass is standing basically vertically,

(01:37:26):
just straight up off the ground, and the after pictures
some of that grass where he stood and you can't
see the ball without standing there. The grass was leaning
forward a pretty good bit too. I mean, the weight
of a grown man standing on dry grass is going
to move it, and it did, and that's what they

used to determine that he would be assessed a two
shot penalty for inadvertently improving his lie. That one, like
I said in the early part of the program, that
one needs to be on the list of rules that
I want changed in addition to the one that I
think forever should have been changed decades ago, and that

is when you hit a perfect drive exactly where you
want it in the fair way, and you walk down
there or ride down there, only to find it in
some horrific divot that somebody had hit that something deep
enough you could pack potatoes in it, and didn't bother
to fix it, didn't bother to put sand in it,
didn't bother to replace the turf. And that happened. The

closer you get to the green with drives, the deeper
some of those divets tend to be. They're going in
there with shorter clubs and just gouging pieces of turf
out of there, and a lot of guys will just
drive away and leave the hole. So anyway, I think
that needs to change. If you shouldn't be penalized for

hitting a ball into position A just because some a
made a mess of the course, and didn't bother to

at Timber Creek, it seems like the course is telling
you from every tea box where you need to hit
that first shot generally, and then it'll maybe tease you
with a little a chance to maybe take a little
more risk of risk reward shot, and all the way

around it's like that, and all twenty seven holes are
like that. It's really an enjoyable way to play golf
when you can kind of see it right in front
of you, even if it's your first time there. I've
played down there, god, I don't know, seventy eighty one
hundred times over the years and always enjoyed playing down there.
I really have, whether it's in a tournament or whether

I've just shown up just off just driving around, heading
down there and thinking, you know it's gonna be, the
surf's going to be. I'll just pull in here and
play eighteen holes at timber Creek have just as much fun,
if not more than if I'd gone down there to
the beach. Everybody in there, from the teaching staff down
to the people in the grill, they all just want
to make sure you're enjoying yourself at timber Creek. And

Open Championship up and running here in the studio and
I'm watching and looking at the course condition and just
true to the form of major championships around the world. Now,
the golf courses is toasty dry and the rough they
I don't know, they may have had a lot of
rain a while back to grow grass that high. I

(01:44:19):
don't know that I've seen that in the worst cut stuff, well,
the stuff that's just never cut. It literally is like
I talked about with Bryson de Shambo's issue. It literally
is anywhere from knee to thigh to in some cases
probably even waist high depending on who who's going in there.

(01:44:41):
And that's just absolutely brutal and for these for any
of these guys to be under par at all through
three rounds is just is a remarkable display of just
how good they are.

Of course we're watching the best in the world, you
would expect them to do well, but even still, the
biggest difference I think between professional golfers at any level
and the rest of us is that they are There's
two things I think really, One is just the level

of skill they have and the amount of practice they
put in. You can have all the talent in the world,
but if you don't refine that talent and turn it
into a skill through days and weeks and months and
years of devoted practice and lessons of how to get better,

(01:45:41):
you'll just be somebody else who plays golf. Pretty well,
these guys have. I don't know how many times I've
heard people in casual conversation talking about golf and wanting
to play golf, just saying I don't know how those
guys are that good. Well, the reason they're that good
and how they become that good, it's, like I said,

(01:46:01):
it's just absolute devotion to the game. One devotion to
the game, and unless you have that, as in any
sport that's played professionally, you won't make it to the
professional level. I've had the good fortune to meet and
play rounds of golf with people who are at every

(01:46:23):
level in the game, from horrible players that take two
hundred shots to get around if they played by the rules, uh,
to guys who can practically close their eyes and shoot
three under by just by somebody telling them where the
ball is or where the hole is. That there's a

(01:46:44):
lot of talent out there, and there's a wide range
of can this guy play at all? Or is he
super good? But once you the closer you get, the
higher you get into better and better golf, lower handicaps,
the higher you go toward on the list, toward lower scores,

(01:47:05):
the lowest scorers, the more time that person's put in.
I don't know. I can't think of anybody who just
took up golf say it at whatever age, and practice
once a week and ever won any kind of a
tournament of significance. You might be able to play once

(01:47:25):
a week and practice once a week, and who knows,
maybe come in fourteenth that's your club championship. But you're
not going to go any higher than that. The devotion
those guys put into that game, it takes them away
from their family, It takes them away from anything else
they like to do except for fishing. I'll bring that

(01:47:48):
up as a quick sidebar. There are a whole lot
of guys on professional golf tours who travel not only
with their clubs, but with fishing rods and fishing tackle
because most of the places they play have water features
that either it may be salt water, may be fresh water.

(01:48:09):
But wherever they are, they have water to fish, and
a lot of them do. I know from years ago
when the Shell Houston opened was being played up at
the Golf Club of Houston then Redstone even that that
place was a favorite of several of the tour guys
for the bass fishing, the quality of the bass fishing

(01:48:30):
it offered. There's a lake towards the back of the
property along one of the five pars, and it cuts
and effects a four par after it. Can't remember exactly
what two holes those are, but the bottom line is
that lake's got bass in it that five six eight pounds.
I don't know if it has any ten pounders in it.
I think it might be big enough to support them,

(01:48:52):
but in any event, that was kind of one of
the favorite spots of the guys when they were in
town before rounds after round, before play even started officially,
they'd be out there fishing their way around that lake.
And then I've actually caught bass and probably I think
almost every lake out there at least a couple. And

(01:49:14):
that's part of why I like golf so much and
probably part of why I'm not any better at golf
than I am. If I would, I kind of jokingly
talk about Blackhawk as me being the person who has
almost undoubtedly played the first five holes more than anybody else.
But what happens is when I get through those first

(01:49:35):
four holes and then get on to five, which has
up the right hand side of the fairway a lake
that used to be probably one of the premier bass
fishing lakes in the country, I can't help myself. It's
very hard for me to go out and play that
course in the afternoon and not have a fishing rode

(01:49:56):
on the cart or three or a big bag a
tackle that goes with them. I just I'm obsessed with fishing.
I'm obsessed with golf, I'm obsessed with obsessed with hunting
and shooting sports and all of these things that I
talk about. And in some cases I don't have the
latest gear. Some of the stuff I can't afford, but

(01:50:20):
I'm I'm always interested in learning more about it, and
that's what helps me get through this show. And the
one thing that I'll tell you that I've been saying
for twenty six years now is that if you ask
a question I can't answer honestly and concisely and correctly,
I'm just going to tell you I got to call
somebody on that one, and I'll find the person who

can answer your question for you and get them on
the air, or at least relay what they've told me later,
and make sure that we get all these questions answered,
because we're kind of all in this together. Really. I
learn as much every week when I come in and
do this shows as I anywhere else. And I really

for heaven's sakes, Mark over in Georgia coming in with
all the information about beach erosion, beach accretion, about how
cuts get carved through sandbars, and where to fish, and

long time and doing it alongside some of the best
in the business. But I also know that when somebody's
written a master's thesis about how water and sand move
on the bottom, I'm gonna perk up and listen to

hyper focus on the fishing aspects of it and see

if there's anything we're missing on when and how the
little things change. Because I know that down along North
Padre Island Seashore, Cliff Webb great friend of mine, and
he has places that he's been going for years where
it doesn't seem in his mind, at least in what

the water is telling him when he can read it
at a lower tide and when the water's really clean
and whatnot, it doesn't appear that the little guts he's
fishing and the little breaks he's fishing in the bars
have changed much. And I want to find out whether
why that would be. If good, strong tides can move
that much sand, why do these breaks keep popping up

(01:52:29):
in the same places. Maybe that's the question to ask
so much to learn. I'll tell you another break. Let

Oh yeah, here he is here. He's going out with
Matt Wallace. I was I think there's an odd number
of people going off in twosomes that didn't make any sense.
But way down the leader board, you've got Matt Wallace,
who is four on going into today's round. He is

going to be going out with Seawoo Kim at nine twenty,
and then Deshamba and Burns go out at nine thirty,
Cam Young and Ryan Girard go out at nine forty,
and then the two leaders with an asterisk. Because Ryan
Fox already caught Lucas Abert, who is at eight under par,

he slept on the lead. Ryan Fox said hold my
beer and went out and shot eight under par today

it is all of a sudden and in the clubhouse
with that score, he doesn't have to worry about it
getting any worse unless the rules people come over there
and telling him he stepped on a blade of grass
and proved his lie like they did to Bryce and
De Shambeau. I still think that was a It wasn't

the wrong call by the letter of the rules. The
entire book of rules is filled with all kinds of
oh maybe we ought to think rethink that, but this
one in particular. And then, of course, like I said,
mine about the divot in the fairway, those two ought
to be the first two they review next time they

(01:57:28):
review the rules of golf. I'm kind of curious to
as to whether, if you play in a regular group
of guys like I do on Mondays, whether they have
special rules and fudging on the official rules. I can
assure you that almost I would say ninety percent of

(01:57:48):
golfers take liberties with the rules as they play around
of golf. And that's not to say that that's right
or wrong, because if you're in the same group and
everybody's playing by the same fudge factor, then okay, let
it go. But if you want to get better at

(01:58:09):
golf and you intend to actually play in real tournaments,
I think that's one of the reasons that if you
look at some of these qualifiers for like say for
the US Open or something like that, you'll see on occasion,
and even in some smaller tournaments, you'll see in city
championships are a good example. In state championships, there are

(01:58:31):
guys who are used to playing a little bit softer
against the rules, then they have to when they're in
an official tournament, and at some point somebody calls them
for something that they've been doing all their lives and says, hey,
that's against the rules, and it ends up getting them disqualified.

(01:58:52):
Not that they're not good golfers, not that they're not
very good golfers, but they're true handicap if they played exact,
actually buy the rules of golf should be a little
higher than it is, and that higher handicap won't get
them into a lot of tournaments, especially city and state championships.
There are you can't just show up with your first

(01:59:12):
set of clubs and take your first wing in the
city championship. You have to have a certain have to
have a certain handicap that's verifiable, and that's not a
bad thing to have really, if you want to if
you want to enjoy golf more, challenge yourself. You shouldn't
be going out there for the enjoyable golf, for fun golf,
thinking you got to beat everybody else in your group.

(01:59:35):
What you're out there to do is have a good
time with good friends, Maybe have a little wager on it,
maybe not, doesn't matter really, But what you want to
have is a chance to beat the golf course and
a chance to have a measurable way to get that
measurable way to know that you're getting better as you play.

(01:59:55):
And conversely, if you're getting worse as you play, if
your handicap can going up higher, then maybe instead of
investing in a six hundred dollars driver or a five
hundred dollars putter, get yourself a couple of lessons, get
yourself some instruction I have. I don't know how many
times I've heard people i'm playing with say, man, I

spent five hundred dollars on this putter, and I'm not
any better now than I was when I bought it.
All right, boy, I bought this driver thinking that was
going to change my game because on TV the commercials
said it goes farther and straighter and everything. Well, it
would if you hit it so that the face is
a lot it was squared to the target, it would

(02:00:38):
go farther and straighter. But if you're still making your
same bad swing, not so much. I've learned so much
from from covering golf first for the newspaper for ten
years or so out on eight six, eight, ten years,
whatever it was, and then now talking about it almost
every week on this on this show, I've just learned

(02:01:00):
learn so much more that I wish I had known
when I was younger, Especially in the last twelve or
fifteen years, I've learned more about the game and learned
how to improve my game and how to make sure
that every bit of practice I do is good practice.
It's one thing to just go to the range and
hit a bucket of balls. And if you were ever

to sit out and watch people walk up to a
public driving range somewhere with their bucket of balls, they'll
hit five or six, maybe seven or eight of a
big of a large bucket with a wedge or maybe
a nine iron something like that. Then they'll hit five
or six balls with a six iron, then five or

six balls with a three wood, and then the whole
rest of the bucket they hit drivers. They they want
to see that ball fly really far, and the farther
it goes, the more they want to swing harder, thinking
that that will continue to hit it straight. When swinging
harder takes you out of your real swing and makes

(02:02:07):
the ball fly not just farther out, but farther left
and farther right and farther up, and sometimes you top one.
I stone cold top to drive. I think it was
about might have been this past Monday, maybe the one
before that, But I mean, I just I just stayed
back too long, and I picked the club up a

(02:02:28):
little bit too much and just slapped it out of
the off the last groove on the bottom of the
face of that club, and it rolled up maybe twenty
twenty five yards, and I actually gave myself a putt
for par on that hole, which wasn't easy. It's a
pretty long four par and missed it, as I deserve

(02:02:50):
to do. By the way, that would have been one
of those pars for the ages. But we all have those,
and we all would like to have more of those
as a matter of fact. All Right, good Heavens, it's

entry level bike for the kids to ride around the neighborhood,
or maybe you're gonna get one for yourself to run
up to the drug store or the grocery store on

we were we got ahead two to one, and that
store score stuck for quite some time last night. But
I blinked and came back and the Orioles were up
three to two. I thought, oh great, here we go again.

But in the top of the ninth, hope, springing eternal
like it always does, we send Tremmel to the to
the sending him in to pinch hit for Christian Hobvier
or catcher, which was a good play, but he makes
the first out of the inning. Then Pena gets on

with a hard hustle down first base that beat the
throw from He hit the ball deep to the shortstop
who had to go away from his body or away
from the base to feel the ball first, and then
to his credit, got up and threw a bullet over
the first base, but Pina just beat it out, so
he's on. And then Jordan Alvarez stands there and gets walked.

Ultimately again, the guy did throw him a couple of
strikes but he walks. So now we got two guys on.
The winning run is on first base, the tying runs
on second base, and unfortunately, Christian Walker comes up and
leaves him there, strikes out, never put a battle. I
think he did foul one pitch off, and I'm not

knocking him. He's had he's had a pretty good run.
I think he's in a little bit of a slump.
I can't remember what he did the last couple of
weeks before the All Star break, but whatever it was,
it wasn't enough last night, unfortunately. And I really hope
I had hoped that they would hang on to win
that game. That Lambert kid man, that's the name, the

same last name as our market president here, and and
Paul Lambert has a son who's playing baseball, who is
is really good and and does a lot of pitching.
And I can't help but think that every time Paul
watches that Astro Lambert go on to the mound, that
he's envisioning in his future sitting in that same Dike

In Park, watching his son with that name on the
back of his jersey, pitching for the Astros. That would
be really, really cool and well deserved too. I know
Paul is absolutely one hundred percent devoted to his son
and all his baseball stuff. He and I have had
more than one conversation about baseball and about driving kids

to the tournaments and getting them to practices and just
all the things that go into too grooming someone to
be a better player than most other players. It takes
a lot of hard work, it really does, on the
part of everybody in the family, and in many cases
a ton of sacrifice. So to wrap up, we learned
about e bikes today. We learned a lot about wave

motion and how it's formed. I was chatting with Frankie
a little bit about it, about how waves aren't it's
not water moving, it's energy moving through the water that
lifts that water as it comes over a shallower spot
and then lets it back down. But the energy continues
to pass through even if it's deeper. And that's something

I could probably talk on for twenty minutes, and I
think if Mark and I got talking about it, we
could go an hour on it. But the long and
the short of it is, it's a very fascinating concept
when you think that it's the water, it's energy that's
moving through the water. It's not that water moving forward
when you're looking at a wave. And I told Frankie
an easy way to understand that would be to drop

(02:09:24):
a ping pong ball onto a calm pool and just
push with your with your hand water toward that ping
pong ball and watch how the wave keeps going. But
the ping pong ball just rises and falls. But it
might move forward a little bit, but mostly it just
rises and falls almost in place as that wave keeps
pushing through the water's not moving, because if the water

we're moving, I think it would push the ping pong
ball more. In any event, we also got that Galveston
County Friends of NRA banquet coming up on July twenty third.
I talked about that. That's Jerry TKA's baby. He's been
sponsoring that heavily, and I'm sure he's on the committee
the board. He might be the chairman of the board
for that thing. And I'm always proud and happy to

help promote the Friends of NRA. This is a big one.
They're celebrating two hundred and fifty years of freedom, and
there's just all kinds of extra stuff going on for that.
When you might want to look into that. We talked
to Kevin Burns about the fishing tournament next weekend down
there at Sergeant. It's a big one. They've got all

kinds of stuff. And I learned, Frankie, you learned too,
didn't you, that the bag of donuts. I had no
idea how a bag of donuts related to a fishing
tournament at all until I learned from several people who
emailed me that bag of Donuts is the name of
a cover band that, from what everybody says, is really

really good. So maybe you want to go check that
out next weekend. That's going to be a lot of fun.

off about what happened yesterday when he was assessed a

he goes off today, I think he's gonna make a
big run and put himself back to the top of
the leaderboard. I really do. He's learned to manage his
temperament better. He's learned to just work his way around
a little better than he used to be a little
bit of a hot head. He was mad yesterday, but
I got a hunch he's been able to put all
that behind him. That is just about going to wrap
it up for so Frankie. I can barely hear the music,

so I don't know where we are in it. Yeah,
