Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Michael Berry Show.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome to our bonus podcast. Honored to have you here.
Quick reminder of the bonus podcast. We've been doing to
a day. I don't want to be committed that we'll
do to a day every day because it's not easy.
But there's a lot to talk about right now with
it being election season. We'll see how it goes in time.
We do them in about ten minute segments. We don't

(00:24):
have to stick to a clock like we do with
the radio, so some may be longer, some a little shorter,
but just so you know, we find that that ten
minutes works for us on different podcasts that we listen to,
so we figured it kind of a bite sized piece
and that's why we've been doing them that way. All right,
without further ado, it is election season, and therefore it's

(00:46):
also disinformation season. In the election of twenty twenty, we
had Russian disinformation.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Remember when you hear the term fake news, you probably
think about how it's used often today by President Trump,
but it's actually an old term used by the Soviet
Union as a reference to disinformation campaigns that the Soviets
and now the Russians have long used to destabilize the West.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
US officials have warned that Russian interference remains an active
threat for the twenty twenty presidential elections.

Speaker 5 (01:17):
Unverified story about former Vice President Joe Biden's son and
the laptop allegedly full of his old emails, it's a
story raising concerns about whether it's real or just designed
to sow confusion. In the final weeks of the election.

Speaker 6 (01:32):
Rudy Giuliani already had open contact with a person that
the US has called an agent for the Kremlin. Now
we are being told by two people who've been briefed
on what the FBI is doing that they're looking into
whether these unverified emails about Hunter Biden that were published
earlier this week by The New York Post about his

(01:53):
business dealings in Ukraine and China are part of this
bigger Russian disinformation effort in the twenty twenty election.

Speaker 7 (02:00):
Over the past few days, President Trump has highlighted a
report by The New York Post about Hunter Biden, Joe
Biden's son. There are major questions about the origins and
the accuracy of that story, and today we learn more
about concerns expressed by the president's most senior advisors that
the president's personal attorney was peddling Russian disinformation.

Speaker 8 (02:23):
Former New York City mayor, President's personal lawyer and longtime
friend white House was warned that Rudy was the target
of Russian intelligence operation to feed misinformation to Trump.

Speaker 5 (02:35):
This looks like Russian intelligence, This walks like Russian intelligence,
This talks like Russian intelligence.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Well, in the midterm elections of twenty twenty two, two
years later, the Biden Harris administration created the Disinformation Board.
You remember this and this woman, Nina Jankowitz steering the ship.
This is not a pair of she really did this
wondering is.

Speaker 9 (03:02):
Really quite ferocious.

Speaker 10 (03:03):
It's when a hucks to take some lice and makes
them sound preposious by saying them in.

Speaker 9 (03:07):
Congress or a mainstream out That's so this information's origins
are slightly less atrocious. It's how you had a delighted lie.
It's how you had a delightled lie. It's how you
had a little lightled lie.

Speaker 10 (03:19):
When Rudy Giuliani shared that in Tamsan Ukraine, or when
TikTok influence to say COVID can't cause pain, their wandering descentful,
when we really should take note and not support their
lives with our wallet voice a note, Oh, information wandering
is really quite ferocious. It's when a hucks to take
the line and makes them sound precocious by saying them
in Congress or a mainstream Mountle's so this inflammation's origins

(03:42):
seems likely less atrocious.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Who well, the outcry to that nonsense was so loud
that the administration fired Nina Jankowitz and killed their censorship
board before it even began, because people realized this is
too or William, this is too scary. We're pushing back.

Speaker 4 (04:03):
The board has never convened, so that's it never convened,
and the board is yes, the board is pausing in
the sense that it will not convene. Will While former
Secretary Chertoff and former Deputy A. G. Gorlic do their assessment,
but the departments work across several administrations to address disinformation

(04:26):
that threatens the security of our country is critical and
that will indeed continue. And again, neither Nina Jankowick nor
the board have anything to do with the censorship or
with removing content from anywhere. Their role is to ensure
that national security officials are updated on how misinformation is
affecting Tree the threat, the threat environment. She has strong

(04:50):
condentials and a history of calling out misinformation from both
the left and the right. And that's and that's how focus.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's twenty twenty four now, and the concern for disinformation
by the media has magically returned. You see anything they
don't like, anything that criticizes them, anything that that questions them,
that's disinformation and it's anti democracy and you must be
arrested or killed. This was Cleve Woodson of the nation's

(05:20):
second largest newspaper, The Washington Post, asking the left handed
lesbian immigrant corin John Pierre what the administration was doing
to fight disinformation, you know, disinformation being Elon and Donald
Trump having a conversation. Elon Musk is slated.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
To interview Donald Trump tomorrow tonight on on X.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
I don't know if the President is going today, goel
free to say if he is or not.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
But I think that misinformation on Twitter is not just
a campaign issue. It's a you know, it's an America issue.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
What role does the White House or the President have
and sort of stopping that, or stopping the spread.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Of that, or sort of intervening in that.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
Some of that was about campaign miss information, but you
know it's a wider thing, right, Yeah, no, And you've
heard us talk about this many times from here about
the responsibilities that social media platforms have when it comes
to misinformation disinformation. Don't have anything to read out from
here about specific ways that we're working on it, but

(06:27):
we believe that that they have the responsibility. These are
private companies, so we're also mindful.

Speaker 8 (06:33):
Of that too.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
But look, it is I think it is incredibly important
to call that out as you're doing. I just don't
have any specifics on what we've been doing internally as
it relates to the interviews and not something that I'm
tracking and I'm sure the President's not tracking it either.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
This was the CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate,
im Ron Ahmed is his name on MSNBC.

Speaker 7 (07:04):
Listen to this and Ron take us through what Elon
Musk is doing and the theories as to what his
motives are.

Speaker 11 (07:11):
Well, Unfortunately, I can't tell you what's in the hearts
of any individual, but I can tell you what our
researchers have been studying with mister Musk's own output on
his platform X. We examined posts about the US elections
that he posted between January first and July the thirty first,
I identifying fifty posts that Independent fact check is found

(07:32):
to be false.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Now that those fifty posts had accrued one point.

Speaker 11 (07:35):
Two billion views and there were three main categories. There
was an AI generated fake video of the Democratic nominee
Kamala Harris, which had one hundred million plus views. There
were claims that Democrats are importing voters. The great replacement
theory are really really dangerous lie that has led to
bloodshed on American streets at the Tree of Life.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 11 (07:59):
It's the same conspiracy theory that led to the christ
Church massacre in New Zealand and to the assassination of
Joe Cox.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
A member of Parliament in my home country of the
United Kingdom. And two hundred and.

Speaker 11 (08:09):
Fifty million views for claims that voting is vulnerable to fraud.
None of the posts displayed the community note, which is
odd because mister Musk says that community notes, the sort
of the self regulation scheme for posting, is a way
of ensuring that it's an immediate way to.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
Refute anything false. Are the exact words he said.

Speaker 11 (08:27):
None of them carried one of those community notes, and
begs the question, is he suppressing.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Notes on his own posts so.

Speaker 11 (08:35):
That he's not shoed his own users, But it does
appear clear that he's abusing his privileged position to sow
disinformation that generates discord and distrust in the electoral process,
precisely the kind of conspiracy theories that lead them to,
you know, atrocious assaults on election workers and the kinds

(08:57):
of thing that the Secretary of State was just talking about.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
CNN's Breonna Miller is also suddenly worried about this terrible disinformation.

Speaker 12 (09:07):
Musks rise as a Trump backer comes as x has
turned into a haven for the spread of misinformation. Since
buying the site almost two years ago, Musk's the site
has struggled to control it on topics ranging from the
election to the assassination attempt against Trump. Sometimes the bad
information has been boosted by Musk himself, who posted a

(09:27):
conspiracy regarding the attack on Paul Pelosi in October of
twenty twenty two before deleting.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
They're using a variation of Nancy Pelosi's wrap up smear
to get out in front of Kamala's fake campaign.

Speaker 13 (09:43):
And it's a diversionary tactic. It's a self fulfilling prod.
You demonize, and then we call it the wrap up smear.
If you want to tell politics, called the wrap up smear.
You smear somebody with falsehoods and all the rest, and
then you merchandise it, and then you you write it
and I'll say, see it's reported in the press that this, this, this,

(10:04):
and this, so they have that validation that the press
reported the smear, and then it's called the wrap up smear.
Now I'm gonna merchandise the press's report on the smear
that we made. It's it's a tactic.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
They're suddenly bringing up the concern for disinformation, not to
nail her and Waltz, but to accuse anyone pointing it
out as promoting dangerous disinformation. Prepare yourself, friends, they're playing

(10:38):
to win. They're gonna pull out all the stops. Don't
be surprised, don't be shocked. They're going to poke you
in the eye after they tackle you. They are they're
gonna cheat when the ref's not looking, and the rest
are on their team. They're gonna do everything possible. Do
not become dispirited. We need you in the fight. It

(11:02):
is time to gird your loins for it. Prepare for
the battle. We are warriors. We are strong. Our forefathers
were victors, and we will be too until next time.
We couldn't do what we do if you didn't do
what you do.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
So thank you.
