Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's that time time time, luck and load. So Michael
Very Show is on the air.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Tell me something that you love about where you live.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Water Burger?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
O great, tell me about it.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
You want to go right now?
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
All right, you want to know, Just tell me about it.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
You're gonna love water.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Burger's the best?
Speaker 2 (00:48):
What makes it the best?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Wherever you are there's a water Burger?
Speaker 5 (00:51):
Yeah, it's always rot there, okay.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
And then when you get there, what do you like
about it?
Speaker 6 (00:58):
What do you get?
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Whatever you want? You could order whatever you want.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Then, right, But there are a lot of places like that.
So let's say there's a McDonald's, a Burger King, a Sonic,
and a Waterburger all lined up. Which one do you
go to?
Speaker 7 (01:13):
Water? Right?
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Right? Why? But they're all right there in this scenario,
they're all right there. So what do you get out
of water Burger? What makes it better to you? What
are you getting?
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Ask him why you love water Burgers, like asking why
you love Christmas or summer night or why you love
your dog. I mean, you could point to the reasons,
but the reasons aren't really the point. You just love it.
And that's how love works.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
So early this morning I sent an email to Russell
Lebara and several years ago he very quietly opened a
burger joint called Burger Libre. They didn't brag about it,
it didn't market it, and it almost seemed to be
like a test kitchen. It was very concept oriented. It
(02:09):
was based on kind of the Mexican you know, wrestling
industry that that Nacho Libre did the did the jack
like did the whole movie around. We used to do
it at RCC, and I think there's a huge culture
that loves that. You know, you go into these places
that have a history with that, and they'll have the
pictures on the wall, you know, the old mask and
(02:32):
all that. And there's a certain group of people, myself included,
who love that culture and that vibe. And so that
was what the Burger Libre was designed to do. It's
not just a burger, it's a it's a concept, right, colors,
very attractive, kind of a P. Terry's look, and he mentioned,
you know, there's a similarity to to P. Terry's kind
(02:52):
of where we are price point and all that. And
we went down there and it's next to his corporate
headquarters and he still has a Bullritos He founded and sold.
He's got his gym where he works out, and he's
got a Burger Libre, and he's got the lunch plate,
which was also a concept that he created lunch sorry, lunchbox,
(03:12):
which was also kind of a proof of concept. All right,
let's see how this does clean food. Kind of like
what was that place? It's like a guy's name. We
used to have one on Shepherd just north of fifty nine,
and they what's the name of it. It's kind of real, real,
(03:37):
They kind of positioned themselves as real, healthy food, nothing fried.
What was that called? Anyway, I can't remember, but the lunchbox,
it is kind of that. I also think that he
created it because he wanted to. He wanted a place
that he Russell is a very very healthy eater. I
(03:58):
think he went in a place that was like his
own kitchen and he could eat his own foods without
them putting anything in there that he didn't want. But anyway,
so I asked him earlier this morning, I was thinking
through my theory, and I said, what have you learned
about the fast food burger business with Burger Libra that
you did not know before? And he said, you must
(04:22):
operate a drive through in order to generate volume. The
technology that's available today allows a fast food business to
be far more efficient than ever. Eighty percent of Chick
fil A's business is drive through, and in a later
exchange we went back and forth. He's friends with a
guy named Jesse Chilou who has one of the top
(04:44):
five Chick filase in the country in volume. I think
he was the first one in Texas to do the
two lanes. And Chick fil A is a model of efficiency,
and Russell's been studying them for years. Said, think about this.
When I first visited Jesse Tolou's Chick fil A in Myrland,
(05:05):
I sat there and I clocked a car going through
the drive through window every thirty seconds consistently. That's one
hundred and twenty cars an hour. They have locations that
have served one hundred and sixty cars per hour. Technology
is where it's at. People have no patience. There was
(05:28):
a time when you would sit in your car and
wait fifteen to thirty minutes just to place your order.
Now it's as quick as you can enter your order
on your phone. On your phone. So we used to
take the boys and I after a ballgame or whatever.
When they would be ten, eleven, twelve years old, and
I'd say, y'all want to go to Sonic and they
(05:50):
would say yes. And I think it was only because
I sold it so hard. And we'd go to Sonic
and they'd come over. And when I was growing up,
they would scale to your car. In fact, I had
a classmate, Whitney Martin, when we were in eighth grade.
She would ride her bicycle into town and work when
we got off at three. I think her shift started
(06:11):
at four. She'd have a bag, she'd throw it over
her shoulder. She'd ride into town. So if we were
going into town, you know your mom. Would you ride
into town with your mom to get something whatever? And
at the seers, you know, hey, can we go buy Sonic?
Whitney's over there because she was cute, You go by there. Man.
We were all so jealous. Whitney's got a job, which
meant Whitney had her own money. And if you had
(06:34):
your own money, even ten dollars at that age, man,
you were the key. You had it all. But anyway,
Gary writes, my kids and I will eat Burger King,
will eat burgers from Burger King over any other chain,
burger joint the chargrill taste is what they love. In
forty five years, I've never been to an Rby's, and
(06:55):
I don't know where one is on the working side
of Houston Mont Bellevue. Now there's a local joint in
Baytown in Texas City that's worth the drive. The grease
running down your hand and arm is so good. Basis,
Burger will hit a home run in your taste buds.
The problem with burger conversations, you know it, you grew
up on it. Oh my Godney, you're having an experience
(07:16):
in there. They have them in Texas City. Basis, I
never heard of it. You know what I've never known
anybody to eat at is a Checkers. I don't know
those checkers keep popping up and I don't know who.
It must be laundering or something. The last time I
had Burger king was as a kid, maybe eleven years old.
Funny thing is I never got the burgers. I got
(07:37):
the chicken sandwich because it was an odd shaped oval
and big, especially for a kid. Catherine Kevin writes, friend
of mine owned Billy's Barbecue and Cold Spring back in
the eighties. When he got a special request, he told
him this ain't Burger King. You get it Billy's way,
or there's the highway. Kurt writes the original chicken sandwich
Burger King, Jeff Davies Builder, Jeff Wrights, Burger King. I'm
(08:01):
there every other week, not for me. LEXI loves the mozzarella, fries,
frozen coat and fries nuggets. Terrible. Whopper is iffy on
which day you get it, I'd do it double if
I was going to get one. The meat then has
a chance to stand out over the overwhelming mayo. They
do have better veggies than other fast food joints. Two tomatoes,
(08:21):
fresh white onions, and four pickles. The spicy fried chicken
sandwich is not terrible. And finally I did I pulled
this one just because I thought it was a cool name.
Sibitis gumz par gum as par is hyphenated Sibitas gum
az par czar. I'm not huge on fast food anyway,
but I drive for my job, so I'll drop buy
(08:42):
some fast food joints every now and then. Burger King's
on my do not eat list. Have it your way, Yeah, freakin' right.
I asked for heavy pickles and three pickles is in
no way extra pistol, pickles, suck service, sucks too, have
a blessed Day, Subita's Park, the Michael Ferry.
Speaker 6 (08:56):
Show Everything you need and most everything you want.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Some random audio we've accumulated during the course of this conversation,
one of which goes back to nineteen seventy four. Burger
King had their regular ad, which was the blondehaired dad
who comes in with his young family and they all happy,
and he's up front, can I have it my way?
(09:24):
I'd like a couple of things that are different, and
can I do that? And she says, yeah, sure you can.
That'd be great. I'm so happy to be here on
family night having a burger And then they had a
separate ad that was clearly targeting black folk. Hello, you
playing the block? Well, yes, yeah, you were reading the
(09:50):
email from Russell thing we're going to get burgers? Could
you do.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
You?
Speaker 7 (10:00):
Sir?
Speaker 1 (10:00):
If I wanted a whopp and I asked you to
hold the pickles and hold the letters, I know I'd
get that fast.
Speaker 5 (10:06):
But would I get to hear you saying no, sir, No,
you'd get to hear us sink girls.
Speaker 8 (10:14):
Hold the big hold of a special order.
Speaker 9 (10:19):
Oh yes, that letter turn.
Speaker 6 (10:21):
In your way, all right, you're.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
All this womp of fresh epid things on top of anyway, we.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Get head in your way.
Speaker 9 (10:34):
Hey, you got one big hit on your hands.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Well, the whopper is one big hamburg.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Your way in your way.
Speaker 7 (10:48):
Away.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
So here's the white people add over here, and then
here's the script for the black people. Burger king, Baby,
you got some big old hot hips on your ass.
Could I get me a whopper back there? Why? Sure, honey,
you can have a whopper. Well that's not all I want.
(11:16):
Could I get you to sign me to sign letting
on me? How about I take this apron off and
bring all these girls from the back. We got Laquisha
over there, she's at the prep station. We got Shanikwa,
she owned the buns. We got Tarzina she at the front.
(11:40):
But all together we like the supremes. Oh, they really
played dead. They really played that. Then you got the
mail tillis ad.
Speaker 7 (11:57):
Hey, you know there's a big, big difference between a
Waterburger and all the other burgers.
Speaker 6 (12:02):
Wasburger makes their burger just the way you won't it.
And you can order.
Speaker 9 (12:09):
Waburger with just the right an ingredients the fixing that you.
Speaker 6 (12:12):
Won't addaburger never scamps.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
On quality value. So remember if not just a hamburger,
it's help whatterburger. Can you imagine having a stutter like that?
I can't stand if my wife interrupts while I'm making
a point in the dinner party. And if you're the
(12:35):
study or people are trying, they can't help it. They
try to finish your sins for it. And now now
can we go back? If taking the conversation over here,
and that's not where I wanted to go, But you
can't say all that. The biggest bust in AD agency
decision making that I can recall in the last ten
to fifteen years was doing away with the water Burger guy.
(12:58):
Do you remember he had the best damn voice? You
remember this guy?
Speaker 6 (13:04):
Is it possible to fit a square peg into a
round hole? Well, if that square peg is water Burger's
paddimout and that round hole is your kisser, you betcha
the water Burger Paddy Molt is back. Two paddies, jack cheese,
(13:25):
creamy pepper, sauce and grilled onions on Texas toast.
Speaker 10 (13:29):
What a burger just like.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
You like it? So when they canned the guy, it
was shocking and there was a whole movement to bring
him back, and they said, no, no, no, we're going
to feature our employees in our ads, the TV ads.
And my immediate thought was, have you seen your employees?
I lose my appetite. I don't think that's a good idea.
(13:57):
I kind of tend to look the other way, or
give me a food. I don't think featuring your employees
is gonna be your best I don't think that's the No,
that's not your best foot forward. That guy was money.
So it was like a political campaign when there was
a huge movement. I think they were probably surprised. They
(14:17):
were on their heels because it was a huge movement
to bring that guy back, and so it was like
they dropped some some intel on him. You started to
see an article saying, well, you know, he's not actually
a Texan, he's from California, and you were supposed to go.
(14:38):
I love that dude. That was the perfect voice to
air the spot for the Burger joint. I love he
was perfect. Oh wait, what he had a sexual harassment
charge when he was nineteen, but the file is closed.
Oh no, he can't be Secretary of Defense. Oh no,
(14:59):
he can't be a ernie general. He doesn't live in tech. Oh.
I don't like his voice after all, Kathy writes El Desino.
The rumor is that Trump will be attending the launch
at SpaceX at four pm today Brownsville. Brownsville Airport has
been cleared for Trump's arrival. That is my understanding. I
(15:21):
believe that is now public information is that the President
will be attending the SpaceX launch today at four pm.
Joe writes. Back in the seventies, Burger King introduced a
ham and cheese sandwich. Do you know about this wrong
called a jumbo? And it was so good I would
(15:43):
eat three of them and be stumped, be stuffed. I'm
gonna tell you the truth. I'm pretty critical of marketing decisions,
and I don't even like ham and cheese. But a
ham and cheese melted sandwich called a jumbo that is inspired.
(16:05):
That's Nobel prize level stuff, so Ray writes Zar the
Chick fil A on nineteen sixty and cutting road closed down,
tore down and rebuilt as only a drive through. Funny,
you should send that because that's what we were talking about.
(16:25):
During the last break, Chad came in and said, there's
that chick fil A you're talking about, talking to me,
that chick fil A, you're talking about Jesse Touloo's Chick
fil A. That Russell had sat out there and clocked
the number of restaurants, a number of people going through.
He said, they tore that thing down and rebuilt it
in less than a year. And there's an article about
(16:48):
it and apparently it was done in seven months. They
tore it down and rebuilt it. That is a fascinating
trend to me, and it tells you a lot about
where retail food and drink is going. Because in Maerland,
at about beech Nut and six', ten there was A
starbucks that wasn't an Old. Starbucks it wasn't a Tired.
(17:12):
Starbucks they ripped that thing down and they replaced. It
they had plenty of space. There they ripped that thing
down and they replaced it with a Smaller starbucks that
only had a drive. Through and if you want to sit,
outside here's some uncovered no, canopy here's some uncovered picnic
(17:33):
tables that you can sit out in a scalding Ass houston.
Heat go. Ahead so they had to walk up a
door that you could walk up to the outside but
you're not coming. Inside you're not peeing and pooping all
over our, toilets you're not hanging out homeless, people you're
not going on a date, There you're not setting up your.
(17:53):
Computer think about how much it costs in lost, sales
in actual construction costs to up a store down and
rebuild it just to keep you from coming.
Speaker 9 (18:02):
Inside Michael, berry.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
The amount of crime that is, happening that has happened
At Houston City, council At Houston City. HALL i Think
whitmer is doing his best to stop, it but it's
a cultural. Problem you've got people that are entrenched, there
and sort of Like trump coming into the federal, government
which is an even bigger. Challenge you come Into Houston
(18:38):
City hall and you've got all these little, fiefdoms all these,
people and all the people they've placed. There this is
all What sylvester did in eight. Years and these are
all little, scammers all little self, dealers and they all
know each, other And sylvester and she and all of.
(19:00):
Them it's all their little cabal of, people and they
have the virtue of being both very loyal to each
other and extraordinarily incompetent at their. Core task and with
zero moral, compass they'll steal you. Blind, Well Harris county
(19:22):
has gotten just as. Bad And Harris county was once
a model of good government when The republicans, dominated and
you had one person On Commissioner's, Court El Franco, lee
who was A. Democrat, well Now rodney runs the. County
lena is the, putative ostensible, head but It's rodney running it.
(19:44):
All so they had a woman Named Barbie, robinson And
Barbie robinson was A Harris county public health director and
The Houston chronicle revealed back In august that she had
steered a contract to A california company that she had ties.
(20:05):
To she ran the same department that awarded the eleven
million DOLLAR covid outreach contract to The democrat, operative which
ended up resulting in the indictment of three Of lena.
Staffers that case is still. Ongoing So lena is now
being told to, Say, kim you. Lost you, can't you,
(20:27):
can't you can't indict, her you, lost which is kind
of petty and, childish but that's the level we're. At
so This Barbie, robinson as it turns, out now That
Kim augue is charging her as it turns Out Barbie
robinson was also drawing a PAYCHECK i think From arizona
(20:51):
where she was an assistant director. There because remember she
checks two. Boxes she's a black, woman so that's a
Double so if she steals you, blind or in the
case Of, arizona never shows up to work but draws a,
paycheck that's okay. Too this is the modern and you'd
THINK dei is bad at, companies at cities and. Counties
(21:15):
it's it's, disgraceful it's downright. Disgraceful So Kim august bringing
charges clip number sixteen From chad's prep from khou Mister.
Speaker 4 (21:25):
Roeblis according to court, documents this all stems from the
misuse of millions of dollars by The Public Health. Department,
now according to court, documents investigators collected emails BETWEEN ibm
And Harris county, employees Including, robinson discussing a sixteen million
dollar contract For Access harris that's a service provided By
Harris County Public health to assist those with critical, needs
(21:48):
and according to these, records the DA's office is ALLEGING
ibm was aware of the project before bidding began and
had already started working on. It, Now Harris County Judge
Lena hadag released the following, statement, saying in, part Kim
hogg's attack On Barbie robinson is the same thing my
former staff members were falsely accused of by her nothing
(22:09):
to show for it three years. Later the statement went
on to, Say Kim hogg continues her pattern of weaponizing
her office against those who disagree with, her Like Director,
robinson who led a successful program Da ogg did not.
Like now right Now robinson isn't in custody and there
is an. Arrest weren't out for her. Arrest, meanwhile those
(22:30):
charges are expected to be presented formally by the DA's
office later this afternoon at two.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
O'clock you mean Kim ogg has indicted her for the
same thing that she did with your. Staff, yeah she's
just making that same claim. AGAIN i wonder why and
(22:56):
how did A california company land a six million dollar
contract With Harris county's government while she was emailing them
privately working out the details this story FROM abc thirteen From.
Speaker 7 (23:09):
September the former chair for this organization still wonders how
it lost To Harris county contract to take nine to
one one calls to how people having mental health, issues
a question The Houston chronicles looked into as. Well our
partners recently received emails possibly shedding Light it. Started they,
say THE covid nineteen testing, site.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
They're trying to find a replacement on a pretty quick,
basis and they couldn't find anyone locally to do, it
according To, robinson so she, said, WELL i know this
company that took of her a similar situation In. California
let me see if they can do.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
It Barbie robinson was hired As Harris County Public Health
director In may of twenty twenty. ONE a month, Later,
dema a consultant based in the county In california Where
robinson came, from got THE covid testing. CONTRACT a few months,
later emails The chronicle received Showed dima Offered robinson a.
JOB a month, Later dema applied for A county nine
(24:01):
one one. Contract weeks, later an email showed a demon
employee acting confidently as if it was awarded the. Contract
it wasn't Until january when commissioners approved the six million dollar.
CONTRACT abc thirteen reached out To, robinson we were told
she wasn't. Available she did respond to The chronicles question
about the job offer.
Speaker 5 (24:21):
Email Director robinson says that she did not see that
email at the. Time she only learned of it this
year when we requested the.
Speaker 7 (24:26):
Emails dema beat The Harris center from the nine one one.
Contract the former chair TOTALLY abc. Thirteen this was despite
them putting in the lower. Bid it was odd that
a for profit agency was awarded the contract over a
county agency they. Controlled we were all stunned when the
email came out that the contract had been, awarded even
though it. Hadn't it was our first clue something was going.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
On oh you know that email where they said this
is the amount of pride that they were going to give.
Her she didn't see that one with y'all found, it
but she never saw.
Speaker 9 (24:58):
It she was going on in my To Michael arry,
show and this is my damn.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
Country i'll thought for this.
Speaker 7 (25:03):
Country this is.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
Mine public health director getting paid by A california, company massive.
Contract they have to go through a bidding, process in
a scoring. Process so just like What lena Had allgo's
(25:24):
people in THE covid, outreach they put their people on
the committee and their people will, say, oh The california
company That barbie knows is that's a great. Company give
them all hundreds in Ut Health Science. Center they're no.
Good give Them, zeros they're. Terrible that way it balances
(25:47):
out whatever the other people that are on the committee.
Rule and remember you put the chief of staff For
Lena hidalgo and are top people on the. Committee they
know how they're supposed to. Vote you've done that multiple.
Times now let's turn to The Houston Housing. Authority David,
(26:12):
northern THE. Ceo he has reached an agreement with the
board to, resign to resign after millions of dollars, squandered
he will give up his. Job it has always bothered
me that elected officials and people in public, positions when
(26:35):
they're finally caught red, handed their punishment is they have
to give up being able to steal from you. Again
what about the? Guy what About Joe. Schlubb he doesn't
get that all, Right, Bud you've been caught drinking and,
driving gotten an, accident and you tore up these. Cars
(26:57):

we're throwing you in the. Slammer you don't give him that.
Option you. Can you're stolen money from the company you work.
For you're down in. Payroll you can resign this job
(27:18):
and face no other consequences and will act, like oh
this is a big scalp we got, here or will
pin you to the. Walk but if you're THE ceo
of The Houston Housing, authority you can resign your come.
On by the. Way credit To Amy davis At channel,
two she's the one who exposed all of, this the
(27:39):
contracts he was awarding to his buddies From chicago who
had no, experience didn't even have a business registered In. Texas,
oh by the, way they're forcing him to. Resign they're
giving him six months of severance of his two hundred
and seventy nine thousand dollars annual. Salary so for six
(28:00):
months he doesn't have to. Work, wow y'all are being
really hard on. Him. Guys plit number. Fourteen It's, Monday november.
Speaker 8 (28:11):

as contracts are. Concerned, tonight his lawyer declined further, Comments.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
You don't say there is a whole cabal of black
individuals who have stolen the city Of houston In Harris
county blind over the last ten, years and not one
(30:49):
of them will go to, prison not. One they're all,
friends they're all self. Dealing occasionally there will be a whistle,
blown but nobody wants to take it. On people are
scared to, death. Frightened it is a criminal culture that
(31:12):
has run. Rampant case after case after. Case was not
a black, Individual Hispanic Mario, diaz not the investigator reporter
