Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Michael Berry Show. Just a quick podcast, bonus podcast
on a couple of news items that really I just
wanted to get the audio amplified because there's some things
that I think are worth noting. So not a lot
of great commentary in this podcast, nothing particularly deep, nothing

(00:20):
maybe even new, but there are things that I flagged
and marked and I wanted to make sure everybody knows about.
So probably be about a ten minute podcast here if yeah,
I'm just telling you there's nothing particularly new here. It
came to be the end of the week, and I

(00:41):
wanted to get this on the air because it won't
roll over well because we're going to have a lot
of Trump putin Alaska talk and so this kind of
stuff gets lost. But every week, these sorts of things
get lost on the cutting room floor, and I didn't
want to happen. Former Republican Speaker of the House Kevin
McCarthy was on Fox News with Laura Ingram where he

(01:02):
called out the hypocrisy of the Democrats on redistricting in Texas.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I know you know.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
This, but it's good to keep being reminded of the
plays we're calling, which is it's calling these people out
for this hypocrisy.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
You had to deal with this redistricting issue a lot
when you were speaker. What strikes you most about Beto?
He bankrolled some of the Democrats, travels to Illinois and
so far for.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Man.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
Let's think about the Democrats argument they said you can't
redistrict mid decade. Well, Hakeem Jeffries, Nancy Pelosi and Hulkel
in New York fought to redistrict last cycle, just two
years ago. They did that trying to win the majority.
Then you think, oh, you can't, Jerry Mander. Look at Illinois.

(01:54):
They get an F rating from the nonpartisan group and
that was under Pritzker. Republicans. Donald Trump gets forty four
percent of the vote and we only have sixteen percent
of the seats.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Or in Illinois, or in Illinois.

Speaker 5 (02:07):
In California, it's even worse. He's the ultimate Gavin Usom.
And if you look at these three governors, they're all
trying to run for president. They're all trying to get
the Democrat nominee. We have the people of California voted
for and changed the constitution for a commission.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Now he will independent commission, independent.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
Commission that gives eighty three percent of the seats to
the Democrats and seventeen percent to the Republicans when they
almost get forty percent.

Speaker 6 (02:31):
Of the vote.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
But that's not good enough. Gavin Newsom wants to take
that higher. So even if Texas got what they wanted,
the percentage will be less for Republicans than it currently
is in California.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
It's about time Republicans actually started fighting hard for this time.
Does a Democrats do it? It's totally legal. I mean,
we might not like it, but.

Speaker 5 (02:49):
We already got cheated by the number of seats. Texas
and Florida deserved more seats because it was during COVID
they made judgment calls.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Then let's go to Illinois Governor JB. Pritzker, who was
on Meet the Press last weekend, so this is six
six days ago with Kristin Welker when she asked him
about his states jerry mandering, because you know, you don't
want the Republicans to jerry mander, but didn't you in Illinois.

Speaker 7 (03:17):
I do want to look at the map of Illinois.
Let's take a look at this. Despite President Trump winning
forty four percent of the statewide vote in twenty twenty four,
Republicans hold only three of Illinois's seventeen districts. These districts
seem to be designed to maximize democratic advantage. What do
you say to those who argue that it's hypocritical for
you to criticize Texas for partisanship when your state also

(03:41):
drew maps to boost your party's standing.

Speaker 6 (03:45):
Well, remember that what Texas is trying to do is
again violate the voting right tect. We didn't. We held
public hearings, legislative hearings. People attended them, they spoke out.
There was a map that was put out, there were
actually changes made to the map, and a map was passed,
and it was done at the end of the census,

(04:08):
the desennial census. So that's how it's done in this country.
You talked about how rare it is to do what
he's doing. Yes, it is. What's even rarer is to
do it at the behest of the President of the
United States, who's clearly attempting to and says that he
deserves to have five more seats.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
He's wrong. You know, somebody said to me, I can't
remember who it was, that the biggest thing to come
out of the Texas jerrymandering deal is that now it's
been exposed how the Democrats had jerrymandered their states. And
what's amazing is undoing the jerrymandering or doing in Texas
what they did in those other states is being talked

(04:48):
about as a threat to democracy into the world. Everyone's panicking,
But no one even noticed that it was done already
in those days. Did you know that. See, they do
their stuff and it's fine. Nobody notices we do the
same thing to try to counteract it, and they scream
and holler. They're better at messaging. Good news is we've
got Donald Trump who is teaching Republicans how to message.

(05:12):
And then we go a last thing on the subject.
Republican strategist Brad Todd was on CNN when he said
the twenty twenty census overcounted in favor of one party
and undercounted the other. Now, can you hazard a guess
before we get here who got overcounted and who got cheated.

Speaker 7 (05:34):
One of the biggest things is it helps decide congressional maps.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
Does this have everything to do with redistribtions.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Well, it does.

Speaker 8 (05:40):
In fact, we know the twenty twenty census the errors
were almost always to the detriment of red states. Blue
states like we do know that the Census Bureau's own
audit of its work has proven that Blue states like
Rhode Island were overcounted. Red Island then doesn't didn't lose
a seat. Red states like Alabama were undercounted. Please say
this is just a fact. It wasn't all red blew,
but it was disproportionately written.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Finally, a story out of Baton Rouge where our w
JBO listeners have been very loyal to us, very good
to us, our show sponsors there, our restaurants, our sales
team Amy and all the folks who make us look
good there Baton Rouge Officer Caleb. I don't know if

(06:24):
this is Easworth or Eysworth. EI s wrt H passed
away and the fellaw who is facing simple criminal damage charges,
hate crime and now first degree murder all stemmed from
the death of this officer. This story, I think there

(06:46):
may end up being a lot more to this. One
thing that was odd was as it was reported, the
charge was attempted first degree murder, but Sergeant Ellsworth went
on to die as approximate cause of the injuries, and

(07:07):
so that means that you've got to elevate these charges.
So you'll see this happen where a bad guy or
will anyone where someone shoots another person and so that
charge would be attempted murder and the person they shoot
starts losing blood. They rush them to the hospital. We
don't know if they're going to live or die. It

(07:28):
is in the interest of the shooter that they live,
because then it was the attempt to murder them. If
the person dies, the same pull of the trigger now
based on the result, can be charged for murder. So
that that's always interesting because you have this odd position

(07:51):
where you've got the bad guy rooting for the recovery
of their victim, because that's going to make a huge
difference to how much time you're going to spend in
the Who's.

Speaker 9 (08:02):
Get Tonight, the Capital Area is remembering Sergeant Caleb Eysworth,
the Baton Rouge police officer who was critically injured after
a driver rammed into his police motorcycle. Good evening and
welcome to nine News at five point thirty. I'm Ethan Tuttle.
Eysworth died this morning, a month and a half after
what Baton Rouge police call an intentional attack. Riley Kramer
joins us now with how local leaders are remembering it.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
With heavy hearts and a salute. First responders from surrounding
cities and parishes escorted Sergeant Caleb Eysworth from the hospital
on Sunday after spending almost two months there. He passed
away surrounded by loved ones.

Speaker 10 (08:40):
Everybody's gonna be grieving. Everybody's gonna be taking this hard
this week.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
On June sixteenth, police say Eysworth was intentionally run over
by a truck while he was on his police motorcycle.
The suspect was arrested later that day.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
It's a tough loss for I know the bat Rouge police,
but law enforce spent in bat Rouge itself.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
You know.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
This is a bad mark on bat Ruge, not the
way you want to have this happen.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
Sergeant Iseworth spent twenty three years with the baton Rouge
Police Department, graduating from the Academy one year ahead of
Chief Morse for.

Speaker 10 (09:08):
January two thousand and four. He and I on a
bee oversuit and both were shot by the same suspect.
So we've had a close bond going way back there
to two thousand and four.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
He left a mark on everyone. Moore says, Sergeant Izeworth
will be sorely missed, not just by the department, but
by the citizens of Baton Rouge.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Well, just remember one thing is that he was always smiling.
Just you could not get a smile off of his face.
Who whatever situation was, he would find a way to smile.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
Now more than ever. Chief Morse says first responders need
the community.

Speaker 10 (09:38):
Just the citizens out there. If you see a first responder,
please go out of your way to say hi, give
him a handshake, tell me hello, tell me you there
to support him. It goes a long way.

Speaker 4 (09:46):
Morse said, BRPD will be there to support the sergeant's
family as they make funeral arrangements. Tonight at ten, we'll
hear more from local leaders as the community remembers Sergeant
Caleb Eysworth.

Speaker 9 (09:56):
Thank you, Ryan ley ebr Mayor President. Excuse me, said
said Edwards, remembering Sergeant Eyworth tonight, saying in part quote
Baton Rouge, we must pause and reflect. When will this
violence end? God bless and rest in peace. Sergeant Caleb
Eysworth to his family, we stand with you and we
will carry you through this. Governor Jeff Landry, also speaking out,
saying quote God bless and rest in peace. Sergeant Caleb

(10:19):
Eysworth to his family, we stand with you and we
will carry you through this. Responses are still pouring in
from local leaders honoring Sergeant Eysworth. We've compiled a list
of them on WAFD, WAFB dot com and our nine
News app.
