is the screech of the angry why liberal bitch. That
is your nightmare. That is the woman who comes over
(04:07):
and demands the baseball from your son, but you don't
give it. That is the administrator at the school. That
is the government officer at FEMA. That is the professor,
That is the elected official.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Lady.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
That is her.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
We all know who she is. God bless you. If
she's your neighbor. Oh, she is the worst. She's mad
all the time. She's just perpetually angry.
Speaker 12 (04:42):
Well, the news is in.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
If you don't know yet, Lena Hidalgo has finally admitted
what we all knew already. She can't win reelection, so
she has announced and oh my goodness, she's mad and
she's the victim. She sat down with Melanie Lawson of
(05:06):
ABC thirteen.
Speaker 13 (05:07):
So tell me, are you going to run for Harris
County Judge again?
Speaker 6 (05:12):
Well?
Speaker 11 (05:12):
Look, when I first was elected, I decided I would
only do two terms, and I have decided to keep
that promise and not seek a third term, and so so, no,
I will not be running again.
Speaker 13 (05:26):
And why did you make that decision the.
Speaker 11 (05:28):
First time I was elected? I said immediately, I don't
want to do this for thirty years. I don't want
to have more than two terms.
Speaker 13 (05:37):
Are you planning to run for Congress, as one of
the other rumors for the Sea District twenty nine against
Sylvia Garcia?
Speaker 6 (05:45):
No?
Speaker 11 (05:46):
No, I support Congresswoman Garcia. I'm going to be doing
everything I can to support her candidacy.
Speaker 13 (05:52):
So you're planning on doing some of this from the
outside as opposed to being an elected official of any
sort this time around.
Speaker 6 (05:59):
I don't know.
Speaker 11 (06:00):
I don't know what I will do. I know that
I'm not running for office this cycle. I can say
that with confidence. I know that I will stay in
public service. That's always something that I've done throughout my life,
and in the future I would like to, if the
voters will have me, I would like to be an
(06:23):
elected office again. I think that with everything I've been through,
I have learned so much about how to be an
elected official and make it sustainable.
Speaker 13 (06:36):
While much of our conversation was about her future, I
did ask Judge Adago about the controversy she's faced over
the past few weeks. Well, there have been some mountain
out shouting matches though in Commissioner's Court, some things that
we have not seen before. And I'll give you a
couple of examples. One is when you brought a number
(06:56):
of children to the court because you wanted to talk
about early education and the fact that you'd like to
see that remain in the budget, and you have criticized
for that. Do you think, in hindsight, especially since you
were censured, that maybe that wasn't the best way to
approach things.
Speaker 11 (07:17):
No, I mean, I'm glad that we've brought attention to
the issue, and I think the question that we should
be asking is why did three commissioners vote against extending
early childcare for tens of thousands of families and say
that the program was not was not vindicated and validated
(07:38):
and evaluated when it was.
Speaker 13 (07:40):
But with all due respect, judge in a lot of ways,
I don't hear you saying perhaps I'm responsible for some
of the acrimony. What do you feel about that? I mean,
do you ever sort of look back and think I
could have handled that much better?
Speaker 11 (07:55):
I mean, I don't think anybody does things perfectly, and
I know there are things that I could have done better,
or there are some things that we did very well,
and the fact of the matter is we move on.
I don't think this is a question that would be
asked of a man, frankly, but I'm very dedicated and
I'm fighting for the community. I'm not fighting for whoever
(08:18):
could endorse me, and I didn't do that when I
was running for reelection either.
Speaker 6 (08:28):
The lake lack a very ship.
Speaker 11 (08:45):
The motion is to set up public hearing on August fifteenth,
twenty twenty five, at ten am, to consider for the
Harris County General Fund the proposed twenty twenty five tax rates.
Bring the kids here and ask each member yes or no. Yes,
commissuer Garcia.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Order, there's been a motion made, no second, We're in discussion.
Speaker 11 (09:01):
I did the commotion. I just read what it's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
You said no, I didn't say no.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
I didn't.
Speaker 11 (09:07):
Okay, Well I take ano.
Speaker 6 (09:08):

Speaker 11 (09:32):

Speaker 3 (09:38):

Speaker 11 (09:39):

Speaker 14 (10:23):
Away, funny farm where life is beautiful all the time.
Then I'll be happy to see those nice young men
in the clean wife's coats and they're coming to take
me away, happy home with trees and flowers and chipping
birds and smile and fiddles.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
Comes in fos and they're coming to take me away.
Speaker 14 (10:46):
You've a funny farm where life is beautiful all the time,
and I'll be.
Speaker 11 (10:52):
So.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Lena had to all go. Will not run for re election.
The deal had to be cut. And the reason she's
come out early is they want the ground swell of
support for their candidate. I don't know this to be
true and don't have this unreliable on real reliable authority,
(11:15):
but this is my gut. What my gut tells me
is an these Porker is the Democrat front runner. There's
no doubt about that, and she would have beaten Lacomendante
that was known an thee Porker has over the years
(11:39):
not always gotten along with some of the black leaders
and that goes back to first of all, black Democrats
in the region, especially preachers used to preach when Wie's
preachers wouldn't bring it up. They used to preach against
(12:01):
homosexuality and cross dressing and all these different things until
they made a political alliance. But there is still an uneasiness.
And you know the irony that Sylvester Turner would go
to black churches where they'd preach against homosexuality and then
(12:21):
endorse him, which is always kind of odd, but so
an Ese porker in ninety five, I think it is
ninety five runs against a pastor by the name of
Jimmy Dixon, calls himself Bishop Jimmy Dixon, and Dixon and
Sylvester were good friends, and Dixon had a big church
(12:45):
out northwest and it was an at large seat, and
that seat got pretty darn.
Speaker 12 (12:52):
Competitive.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
I think she ran against him because Chris Bell was
about that, and maybe Chris Bell ran against him, and
she ran against done what was his name. Anyway, there
was some there was some acrimony between this white lesbian
at that time.
Speaker 12 (13:12):
She was considered a little more.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Conservative for a Democrat moderate and black politicians, and over
the years Anissis had an on and off again relationship
with some of the black leadership. Well now getting ready
to run. She was going to run against Lena's she
(13:33):
was going to run against Randy's. She was going to
run against Rodney's puppet, and that's Lena. Rodney needed Lena
there just as the folks behind Biden needed Biden there
because he's the puppet and that allows that allows these
people to govern without having to be seen. They've got
(13:57):
somebody they roll out that's kind of just a ceremonial leader.
Lena lost the plot along the way, and that became
a problem, and it became so bad that Rodney figured
out two things. Number One, they're going to be able
to beat her in the next election because he knows.
(14:18):
He knows we beat her in twenty twenty two in
the general, but now he knows they're coming after her
in the Democrat primary.
Speaker 12 (14:25):
And in the Democrat.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Primary, Aniceporker, the poll showed could beat Lena, especially if
he couldn't drive out the minority vote, and right now,
that's not something that is particularly strong. There hasn't been
a mobilizing event, so what to do. So the conversations
(14:50):
began with Lena to get her to step down or
to get her to agree to endorse anice porker and
all would be well. And so this has been going
on since early in the spring. I told you she
would step down, and she is not stepping down. She's
announcing she's not running for reelection. But the deal was
(15:12):
set to have happened early this spring, and the deal
was she would be placed in a position that would
pay her three hundred or more, probably something like Ripley House.
That's where they stash politicians.
Speaker 12 (15:29):
When they're done.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
It's a non government organization that's you know, it's always
had on its board former city council members and there's
hundreds of millions of dollars that go through this organization
and nobody really knows much of what they do, but
they are beloved. You'll see in the news, Oh Ripley
(15:54):
House today, This is happening in Ripley House. That is
very very carefully cultivated peace so that anytime Ripley House
comes up, people automatically have a positive association for this
organization that gets.
Speaker 12 (16:09):
Tons of COVID fund everything.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
There is a cause for millions of dollars run through there,
and it has been alleged again and again and again
that it is also the place where they launder money
to flow into political campaigns and people's back pockets. I
don't know, I hear that.
Speaker 12 (16:30):
There's a lot of chatter around it. I'll tell you that.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
So the thought was, she goes over there, she pulls
three hundred thousand, she keeps her head down, she doesn't
get noticed, she gets to feel like she's still in
the public eye because at this point she's come to
see herself as you know, a beacon of the community,
a real leader, if you will. Well, she's also increasingly,
(16:56):
during all of this time, while she's growing more and
more unpopular, she's increasingly becoming unhinged, and and they're increasing
blow up some of them you've seen on television.
Speaker 12 (17:12):
Now how we got to today. Hold on.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
The Interior is.
Speaker 12 (17:17):
Big announcement in the Senate race.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Today.
Speaker 6 (17:38):
Collaboration is strong and it will be in the days
to come.
Speaker 11 (17:44):
Uh, we promised them the Spanish media, I'd go after you.
So let me just repeat my remarch in Spanish.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
There's an impact in.
Speaker 11 (17:55):
All four counties, and so whenever we have an impact
on one county, the commissioner joins but all four counties
have been impacted, and I don't feel comfortable with giving
special treatment. Everybody was notified that you, as a mayor
and I, as a county judge.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Are speaking.
Speaker 11 (18:13):
I'm happy for them to join, but at least if
you want to her US speak, let me do the
duty to the Spanish transitions.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
And I'm glad I made the approval.
Speaker 11 (18:23):
Is oh, Mayor, this is a disaster. This is not
the time, Okay, so and it's fine your you have
(18:46):
to think about the timing. It's no coincidence. This is
happening in the middle of my re election campaign. That
in and of itself should make very clear that it's
politically motivated, that it's meant to destruct, to destroy, to
harm my campaign, to harm, to distract me. That is
(19:08):
I think enough evidence and is very clear as to
what the motive is. Some of us are wrapped around
the little finger of a woman who I don't know
what the she's threatened with. She had almost ten million
(19:34):
dollars in the bank, and she had a US senator,
and she had a furniture salesman. You can't win them all,
can't win all the with a grin on the faces,
(20:04):
I write and sign up to be a wartime county judge.
Speaker 6 (20:07):
But I've dealt with flood.
Speaker 10 (20:08):
Fire, pandemic, winter storm, now monkey pops.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Well, I'm hearing that Wesley Hunt announces in the US
Senate race today, turning to the Republican primaries in March,
which would make the US Senate race as I expected
it to be momentarily a three person race. Now what
(20:45):
I don't know, and I've known Wesley. I supported him
very heavily in the first race against Lizzie Fletcher, which
was a nail bier that went down to the last.
Spent the next entire afternoon with him sitting outside El
(21:06):
Tempo on on West tim Or commiserating because what's that?
What did I order?
Speaker 12 (21:13):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (21:15):
I had beef nachos, the faheta meat nachos.
Speaker 12 (21:22):
I like. I like, as Russell says, the.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Only way to make your nachos is individually. You can't
you can't stack them. So they do that properly. And
I like the you know, individual chip, then the meat
and the cheese, and then I like to get a
dollop of sour cream and uh a jalapano per.
Speaker 12 (21:49):
Chip and uh yeah, that's so that's what I had. Yeah,
it is Maximensushi.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
It is so anyway, so that you know we we
have been very good friends over the years. He then
they created a district for him and that was pretty
much a coast for him to get in, and so
he had that seat and would have that seat for
(22:19):
as long as the foreseeable future. He would be a
United States Congressman. Now at that point, I have not
visited from there with him about about a Senate seat
or anything else. Well, that's not true. Social you know,
friendly text, you know, did you see this?
Speaker 12 (22:40):
You watch that movie? Did you?
Speaker 2 (22:42):
But we have not discussed a potential Senate run, And
you know, there's it's a complicated question, but I think
it is for both of us. They sort of calculated.
I didn't ask because I knew he didn't want to tell.
He'd tell me when he wanted to, And he didn't
(23:03):
bring it up because he didn't want it to be awkward.
So but I didn't. I wasn't sure what would end
up happening there. I thought for a while, now, he
won't end up running, because you got to give up
your congressional seat to do so. Because remember, if you're
in the lower House, the House of Representatives. Those are
(23:26):
the people who mostly refer to themselves as congressmen because
they're in the lower half of the Senate. That's every
two years, so if you run for the Senate, you
can't run for that congressional seat in the spring. You
can't run for both, so you have to give up
your congressional seat. The upside is now you go from
(23:46):
four thirty five congressman to one hundred Senators. You immediately
have clout. You're one of you know, fewer than a
handful of black leaders. You're one of only two black Republicans.
You're the first black Republican senator from Texas.
Speaker 5 (24:06):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
You know, he's good at media. He would get a
lot more media. It's hard when you're a young congressman.
You know the Bill maher interview went viral. You get
more opportunities like that because you're more noticed.
Speaker 12 (24:20):
You're us senator.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
You only have to run every six years, so so
you're not constantly on the campaign trail.
Speaker 12 (24:28):
That's the upset.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
The downside is you got to win that seat, and
if you don't win, you've also given up your congressional seat,
which was a safe seat.
Speaker 12 (24:39):
So it's it's a it's a big risk.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
It's a calculation in a political career, these are the
moments that you know you you wring your hands over
is this the time? Timing is everything. So I started
hearing more and more rumblings, and I started seeing things.
And again I didn't ask Michael T did clerk did
(25:02):
intern for him this summer?
Speaker 12 (25:04):
But we never discussed it.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
I suspected there was a one point two million dollar buy.
I don't know if it was Wesley's campaign or a pack.
I've heard both. I haven't bothered to check. I think
it came from the campaign. It doesn't matter because it
was on his behalf, So either way, it was the intention,
and it was a statewide spend of one point two million.
(25:29):
A state wide spend of one point two million come
February would be a drop in the bucket. You wouldn't
even notice if a guy spent one point two million
dollars in February, because they'll it's going to be so
noisy with politics. You're going to hear campaign ad after
campaign after campaign ad, which is why in some ways
it makes more sense to get out early and start
building the ame id now because folks who load up
(25:52):
at the very end they end up they get crowded
out in February, because that's what all the ads are going.
But from what I understand, Wesley Hunt will announce today
that he's running for the United States Senate in the
race currently involving Pornyan and Paxton.
Speaker 11 (26:20):
This is a thirty nine percent raise for one person
that they did math in the back office, which I
stepped out of because it feels insanely icky. I appreciate Trivin,
you know, great guy. Nobody's so good that they deserve
a forty percent salary increase overnight.
Speaker 6 (26:42):
Hello is it me?
Speaker 1 (26:46):
You look before?
Speaker 5 (26:49):
I can see it in you.
Speaker 6 (26:53):
I can see it in your smile.
Speaker 11 (26:56):
I don't know what's behind him?
Speaker 3 (26:57):
You all.
Speaker 11 (26:59):
I hope that all the other department heads and department
leaders know that I appreciate them too, do you know?
Speaker 6 (27:05):
I just want to say, and you know, I just
what to do.
Speaker 9 (27:11):
I'm a post and I want to tell you so much.
Speaker 11 (27:19):
It feels insanely icky to make it sound a little
less bad, But hello.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
Is it me?
Speaker 5 (27:32):
You looking bad? That one?
Speaker 3 (27:36):
The way?
Speaker 11 (27:37):
You are like the nicest part of town.
Speaker 6 (27:39):
That wonder maybe.
Speaker 11 (27:41):
We should get out of the car.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
So then we got.
Speaker 5 (27:43):
Out you somewhere.
Speaker 11 (27:46):
He said some really nice things you. I was so excited.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
I don't remember half of it.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
Tell me.
Speaker 13 (27:54):
Or I haven't got a do, but that I thought by.
Speaker 11 (28:01):
Say that feels insanely a key.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
Overnight, a DPS trooper in Sanjacino County was killed in
the line of duty responding to a vehicle crash after
his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Those
are the only details we have at this point, so
(28:29):
our thoughts go out to our many friends in law enforcement,
especially the DPS today, in the loss of one of
their own. So I am hearing I have not confirmed
it with Wesley Hunt, but I'm hearing on very good
authority that Wesley Hunt announces today that he is entering
(28:53):
the US Senate race that would be the Republican primary
in the seat currently held by John Cornyn. My understanding is,
as often is the case, is that Wesley Hunt's camp
was working very hard to get him into that race
(29:17):
and get Cornn out, which his entry into the race
was thought to be enough to probably force Corning out
because it makes it that much harder for Cornn to win.
And my understanding is there were a lot of folks
in DC, where Corn has a considerable amount of cloud,
(29:39):
who were pressuring the Hunt folks to get him to
stand down all the while They've been spending money statewide.
The reason you spend money statewide in September like this
is because poles are going to come out, and those
early polls are going to to be presumed to show
(30:01):
what your residual.
Speaker 12 (30:04):
Name I D and strength this.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
So let's say a poll had come out and I'm
just making this up, this did not happen. Say a
poll came out in August and you were at two
percent statewide, not an uncommon thing. Remember Ted Cruz was
at two percent when he ran for the Senate in
twenty twelve. You can change those numbers, but at that
(30:27):
moment they may not know who you are yet. Republican
primary voters would be more likely to know, and especially
because Wesley Hunt has had some public appearances, some very
positive public appearances recently, including the Bill Mark clip which
went very viral the day before that Bill marrierclip, his
name I D may have been three, four or five percent.
Speaker 12 (30:49):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
It wouldn't be that high. Maybe it's ten percent. Wouldn't
be as high as it would be the day after
the Bill mar clip. And then once you spend that money, well,
you spin a race, a poll like that to say, hey, look,
let's say you get that number up to twenty five percent,
be a good showing, thirty three percent, really good showing
(31:12):
because the race hasn't begun yet. Then you go to
the money guys and you go, hey, look we're already
at twenty five percent. We haven't even begun to run yet.
We haven't done what we need to do. And so
it gives you the appearance of money. I mean, it
gives you the appearance of strength. A lot of guys
that write checks don't know politics. They write checks based
(31:37):
on who they think is going to win, and they
can be convinced as to who's going to win by
Karl Rove type people without them even realizing it. They're
never as clever as they think they are. They you
take them to dinner, laugh at their jokes, remember their
wife's name, send them a birthday card. They'll write you
(32:02):
a check. And so you get there's a certain donor
class that are the less sophisticated donor class that will
hold events and raise money for you, and you get
those people. You can raise some money there. There's pockets
of money there. Remember, there's votes and then there's money.
(32:22):
And most of the people who are engaged at the
grassroots level are not writing checks. So to get the money,
which is what you're going to use, really to get
the drive by voter, and yes we still have those
in the Republican Party.
Speaker 12 (32:39):
To vote for you.
Speaker 2 (32:40):
You just have to build your name idea up. That's
very expensive in Texas. A statewide race in Texas is
insanely expensive. It is so expensive it's hard to fathom
because you have to have you have to compete in
various media markets that are all completely separate and don't
overlay out. You've got the very expensive Houston media market
(33:05):
in and of itself it's very expensive. Then you've got
the Dallas Fort Worth media market. Then you've got the
Austin San Anton cheaper but still very expensive. Okay, you've
got those three that are already going to wipe out
most people whatever they're going to raise. But you still
have West Texas, you still have East Texas, and you've
(33:26):
got South Texas. Not only that, that's just the media.
You've got to have a ground game and that's not cheap.
So you're talking about I don't know, it be interesting
to see fifty million dollars. It's hard to raise. You
got caps, you've got you've got limits, you've got time
frame constraints. That's why you want to be sitting on
(33:48):
a pile of cash when the election starts or when
the campaign starts. So if Wesley Hunt is in uh so,
the way the give and take works, it's kind of
like Lena and Rodney. There's the kind of well, you
better not do this, and that's supposed to talk to
you out of it, and that either makes you jump
up and really do it or cower out. I think
(34:12):
what happens. What I understand is the Cornin folks in
DC were working very hard to keep him from running,
and you know, probably making threats. I don't know that
on first hand authority. I don't want to put words
in his mouth. I want to be clear. I have
not talked to Wesley Hunt about all of this. So
what I'm saying is what I'm hearing. There will come
a point where he'll come on the show and we'll
(34:33):
have that conversation, but we're not there yet. My guess
is with Wesley Hunt getting in the race. It erodes
Cornyan's support even more. Wesley is probably far more likely
to get institutional support, and that's going to come out
of Cornan's share. And now you've got you've got Corn's
(34:54):
vote split, and you've got that's going to lift Paston
up even more. And those folks hate Paxton, So that's
my guest. Paxton leaving the AGS race has set off
quite a competition for the Attorney General's office, and one
(35:15):
of the individuals running to replace him will be our
guests coming up.
