questions. Uh and seven one, three, two, two five eight seven
four is the number to call.Let's head out to Richmond, Ruth.
Welcome to Texas Home Improvement. Howcan I help you? Good afternoon.

(04:01):
I am calling about I have sortof a ranch style house with concrete porches,
the length of the house front andback, and I have cedar posts
that run from the edge of theconcrete nine feet up to an overhead the

(04:23):
overhang ceiling. Several of them overthe glass on I don't know it's been
over over a period of time.Several of them are rotting at the bottom
in places at the back where theelevation of the porch meets what I want
to say, the yard line,in other words, the grass. So

(04:46):
when I have when we have atremendous amount of remain and it might pond
there for a period of time, not uh, you know well above the
wheat poles and the foundation of thehouse, that it's there. And so
I had had two people look atthem, and I wanted your opinion.

(05:08):
So one person said, well, obviously, and then there's this little I
don't know the terminology, but littlelittle skirt coverings for the bottom of them,
and years past I had had thoselittle skirts replaced. But it's evident
that rot is terrible on a coupleof these posts. So I want to

(05:30):
get them all done in match becausethey are actually thirty years old. I've
been in the house that long.My question is one person said that they
would elevate the post on a galvanizedsort of I don't know foundation, and
they they do have a galvanized around. So the other person said that it

(05:55):
wasn't that they would not elevate them, that it wouldn't make a difference.
But I understand the first one hasthe first person hat is in the know
about doing patios and things like this, and it makes sense to me.
What do you say about it?If I was pouring new concrete, I

(06:15):
would put the the little uh galvand ized pieces in the concrete to keep
it elevated off of the concrete, because it does help extend the life of
them. When the wood is touchingthe concrete, it tends to suck up
moisture, which does cause them tostart rotting on the bottom. But as

(06:38):
you've seen, it takes years andyears and years for it to become an
issue. Now they do have theability if they add them, to attach
them to the concrete with these screwsbasically that go into the concrete and then
you've already got the little decorative peacearound the bottom to cover it up.

(07:01):
So it does help extend the lifeof them. Now the big question is
how long are you going to bein the house, and is it worth
the added labor costs to do it, because the part is nothing, it's
it's the labor that goes into doingit that can add up. Okay,
the one gentleman said that there wasmore cost in the galvanized footing that he

(07:29):
uses, and I understand. Soyes, it would be a matter replacing
the little galvanized surround and then doinga raised a raised one. So it
sounds like that's interesting because I don'tknow, as I said, I retire,
I have. It sounds like severalchildren that want to buy into this

(07:51):
house in the future. So soit sounds to me like for like they
like the first person did give goodadvice to me. It sounds like by
his methodology of raising them a littlebit about sending the live Okay, all
right, well sounds good. Andif your kids will buy into the house,

(08:16):
let them do the first repair. They're not quite ready yet, but
I'll think on that. Okay, all right, thank you, Jim,
You're welcome. You take care, okay, bye bye b bye. And
and look if if you are buildinga new patio with a cover on it

(08:41):
like that and you want to usethose galvanized pieces. They work great.
It really does help to get itup off of the concrete and keep the
moisture off that wood. But likeshe said, this has been there thirty
years already, so it's not likeit happens overnight or anything. Got a

(09:03):
question seven one three two one twofive eight seven four. That's seven one
three two one two five eight sevenfour. Uh. Just FYI, if
if it was mine, I wouldbe building it up off the concrete using
the little post because the price differenceis not that much. It is worth

(09:30):
it. Again seven one three twoone two five eight seven four, And
I'll see what I can do tohelp you out here on Texas Home Improvement.
Let's see. Since I don't havea call right now, we'll do
an email. Question. Uh,Molrow out of Houston says roof contractor for

was great that I enjoyed the heckout of that UH. And what I
really loved on that is here Iwere in the UH taxiway waiting our turn

the towers and stuff. Uh,but the tower is talking down to all
the people who are leaving, thankingthem for coming and all this kind of

(12:13):
stuff. And here comes this hugemilitary transport landing as we're just sitting on
the taxiway, and you know,we caught probably could have put forty of

I had somebody come out and basicallythey ripped me off. You recommended I
called Guardian Roofing. I did callthem. The technician came out, he

was on time, he's courteous. He said, yep, they've used the
wrong type of sealing. So hecleaned it and resealed it and managed the
Kudos to you for recommending Guardian, and kudos to Guardian for doing a polite,

Saluting our heroes, supporting those whogive their lives to protect ours and helping

(15:35):
to improve homes all over Texas. This is Texas Home Improvement with Jim dot
Hey. Welcome back to Texas HomeImprovements. Your total home improvement source seven
one three two one two five eightseven four. That's seven one three two

(15:56):
one two five eight seven four.So our caller hung up there, But
I'm gonna tell you just one quickstory because this is my favorite story.
At Oshkosh here. You know, they offer church services, and I'm Catholic.
We go to the Catholic service andthere during a Catholic service, the

(16:18):
priest gets up and does homiley. That's where he gives his talk and stuff.
And so he's given his talk andhe's going over things and he says,
oh my, and we're all facinghim, but he's facing out towards
the runway. Look at that.See seventeen coming in and totally change the
homiley it went from what he wastalking about too. I remember back in

(16:38):
World War two and now here wegot the C seventeen and he's going through
all these stories, and then homilywas over. When you come to Oshkosh,
you are totally immersed in airplanes, and it doesn't matter if you're just
a regular visitor or if you're avisiting priest. It can really just catch

(17:00):
you by surprise the things that youget to take a look at. But
from the old war birds to themost modern plane that's available, they're here.
Over ten thousand airplanes out here anyways. Seven one, three, two,
one two, five, eight sevenfour Renee, how are you today?

(17:22):
I'm doing fine? How are you? I am doing great? How
can I help you? Well?I had a question I have. I
live in the Heights area in oneof those homes that are they're not townhouses.
It's not connected, but it's likethree stories with a fourth floor deck.
Right and after the hurricane, aroofing company came out and they did

(17:45):
a drone over all the houses. And you know, my roof is not
leaking, but my deck, mybedroom sits under my deck, and there's
some water leakage in my bedroom ceiling, which tells me the deck is leaking
not much, little bit, andI wanted to get your thoughts on that.
If that's maybe the ceiling, thedeck needs to be resealed, or

(18:08):
if a roofing company needs to checkthat, or who checks who you could
recommend to check that? And whatis the material up there? Is it
a concrete or is it a woodor it's a tile. It's a large
block tile, Okay, so it'slaid on top of concrete. So more
than likely it's going to be oneof two things. A lot of times

(18:32):
where we find there to be aproblem is in the flashing that's around the
edge of that starting to leak. But the other place can be the membrane.
They use a rubberized membrane basically underthe concrete. It's like a shower
pan basically, and that's the secondaryplace that can can be the leak.

(18:55):
So typically you're going to need aroofing contractor out there to take a look
at it and get everything redone andresealed. Guardian roof Systems is one of
them that you could give a callto. Uh. Now, I will
tell you a lot of the roofingcontractors are going to be busy right now.
Let them know that you do havean active leak, because that typically

(19:18):
takes precedence over somebody who just hasa worn out roof that they're wanting to
replace. Okay, and let meask you this. I put that on
the WhatsApp to see if anybody elsehad that, and a gentleman that's in
the complex told me that he's hadit a couple of years ago, and
he sent me pictures and they tookoff the whole front of his house.

(19:40):
I guess because of it leaked downinto the well between it, and that's
the reason I'm kind of pushing youto do this sooner than later. If
you let it go, the waterstarts getting into the insulation, it gets
into the wood, and it doesnot take very long before it starts wood
roted. Okay, okay, okay, well, I appreciate it. I'll

(20:02):
give Guardian Roof and a call then. And you said, tell them it's
an active leak. Yes, okay, great, okay, Well, thank
you very much for the information.I appreciate it. You bet you take
care you too, by bye,And if anybody needs to call Guardian Roof
Systems. It is two eight onefour zero seven seven to two eight zero.

(20:23):
Uh, let them come out andtake a look again. Our number
seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four, Earl in the Woodlands.
How can I help you. I'vegot a about a fifty five year
old house that has a chimney that'smade out of Mexican brick and one of

(20:44):
the bricks is just totally deteriorated.Who do I call to get one brick
replaced in the chimney? You cangive a brick mason a call. Uh,
Mister brick is a company that youcan call. And uh, I've
used there. I use it themon different projects all the time. They
can help you out with it.Let's see if I've got their number with

(21:06):
me though, and I do not. But if you want to call my
office at Due West at seven onethree four seven three seven one five six,
just tell them you need the numberfor the brick mason. They'll give
it to you. It's called misterBrick, mister Brick. Okay, all
right, I appreciate it. Youbet you take care all right? Okay,

Home Improvement. Hey, welcome backto Texas Home Improvement. Seven one three
two one two five eight seven four. That's seven one three two one two

(23:17):
five eight seven four. And I'llsee what I can do to help you
out here on Texas Home Improvement. And since we just had our calls drop
off, I think we'll jump backinto an email question. But seven one
three two one two five eight sevenfour, give us a call. Let's
see what we can do to helpyou out here today. So Cindy sends

(23:38):
in a stucco question. Hello,I believe I have faulty stucco in my
townhouse. I smell mold and seewater damage on some of my interior walls
and cracking on the baseboards under mostall of my windows. I also had
water on my phone charger after Ipulled it out of the wall. I

(24:00):
don't know where to turn. Canyou recommend a company to check this and
what is the cost to have itrepaired? I also smell mold on certain
areas by my windows. I don'tthink you have stucco. I bet you
have ephis. Ephis is a syntheticstucco notorious for leaking like that. And

(24:30):
I hate to tell you this, but normally what they end up doing is,
Yeah, they find out it's gota leak and everything behind it is
rotten. The insulation is shot becauseit's saturated. The saturated insulation has kept
water on the studs in the woodfor too long and now they're rotted,

(24:52):
and so they end up taking thewall apart and rebuilding it. And that
really is the reason that ends uphappening. Look, I'm going to tell
you to call a restoration company because, uh they can check it for the
mold and all that and go fromthere. It is Woodland's Water Restoration at
two eight one five seven six eightfour five nine. That's two eight one

(25:18):
five seven six eight four five nine, and talk with them about it.
They'll do all the mold checks. They can deal with insurance and uh,
something like this sometimes may be coveredby your insurance. It'll depend on the
policy. Uh So again Woodland's WaterRestoration. Give them a holler and see

(25:40):
if that doesn't get you taken careof on this, because you don't need
to just jump in and start havingit repaired until we know exactly what's wrong
and what it's going to take tofix it the right way again. Our
number seven one three, two,one two, five eight seven for David.

(26:02):
How are you today? I'm fine, Jim, Well, how can
I help you? I just wantto get your opinion on this liquid solution
that they're now spraying on asphalt rougeto give your singles some more years.
I don't know. Have you heardabout this? It's all over the TV.

(26:23):
Yeah, I've heard about it.I've seen it. I've looked into
it. And the issue I runinto on it is all dependent on how
much they're going to charge you todo it. And the reason I say
it that way is some of themare charging up to half of what it

(26:44):
would cost to just put a newroof on. Okay, and at that
cost it's not worth touching. Yeah, I see, I see that,
and that's what That's mainly what Iwas saying. You know, I haven't
called anybody about it, but Ididn't know, you know, the cost
versus a new root. Yeah, you know some of them it's it's reasonable

(27:08):
and I know they'll tell you,oh, it'll extend the some of them
are telling you five, ten andeven fifteen years extend the life of your
roof. No, if you getfive years, you got a bunshot of
it, and that's gonna be themax that you're gonna get in our climate.
Uh. And so you got toweigh that in how much am I

(27:30):
going to spend on it? Ifa new roof is going to cost me,
and I'm just gonna use round numbers, ten thousand dollars and this costs
two thousand to buy me five years, Okay, it's worth looking at.
But if I'm gonna spend five thousandto buy that five years, go with
the new roof. I agree.Okay, man, thank you very much,

(27:55):
You're welcome. You take care. And what these items do is they
basically rehydrate the asphalt. I mean, that's really what they're doing. And
some of them are then coding thetop of it with another color, which

(28:15):
is a shield. But on theasphalt shingles, it doesn't stay attached.
And that's reading I say, you'renot going to get the ten and fifteen
years that some of them are tellingyou. Five years is going to be
max. You have to justify whatis going to cost. But I will
tell you this, if you've gotthat product up there and you go to

(28:36):
sell the house, it's probably goingto be an issue. And I know
the guys who are putting it onand say, oh, no, it'll
help raise the value. No,it doesn't raise the value of the house
because anybody who looks at it isgoing to say, I'm going to have
to replace that roof up there. It's coming off the cost of the house.

(28:59):
So keep that in mind. Ifyou're going to be looking at selling
your home, you may have todeal with that. And you know,
since we're talking about values of houses, there was an article that I saw
this week that was talking about thecost of government regulations on housing. Red
tape is basically what it went intothe delays that permit departments do their inspections,

(29:26):
where they'll come out and tag somethingas need to be redone and it'll
be something real simple that you coulddo in a matter of seconds, and
they'll say, no, well you'llhave to call in for a new inspection.
We'll be back out in three days. Just different codes that some cities
put in for no good reason. On the average home that costs two hundred

(29:51):
and eighty thousand dollars. The redtape that our government is putting on us
ADS seventy thousand dollars. That's whatit costs of that two hundred and eighty.
So if you're wondering why houses aregoing up so much, every time
they come out with a new regulationthat contractors have to deal with, there's

(30:15):
a cost involved. And the calculatedcost was seventy grand out of two hundred
and eighty. That's a huge amount. We got to take a quick break
seven one, three, two pointtwo, five, eight seventy four.
We'll be back with more Texas Homeimprovement. You know, if you're looking

have, feel free to pick upthe phone, give me a call,
and I'll see what I can doto help you out here on Texas Home
Improvement. But I had a Douglasnot of Waller send me an email about

(34:27):
securing his outside AC compressor. Hesays, Hi, Jim, what is
the best process to secure the outsideAC compressor to the concrete pad? I
just purchased a new American standard fiveton unit, and with the last two
storms, it was almost blown completelyoff the pad. Obviously, these newer

(34:50):
units are much lighter than the olderones. Thank you. Well. There's
actually a couple of ways that peopledo them. One is, if you
look down through the top of theunit, you're going to see down in
the bottom. There are holes availablein the bottom that you can put screws
through into the concrete pad below. The other is they'll actually take metal straps

(35:16):
and go over the unit in thetop and crisscross it and secure it in
four spots down around the base intothe concrete where you can run into an
issue though, and I want tocaution you on this is if you don't
have the right base pad. Someof the base pads are lightweight concrete that

(35:42):
is just smeared over the top ofstyrofoam, so the base pad doesn't weigh
anything. Now, some cities actuallyrequire a concrete heavy concrete base pad with
the unit attached to it to secureit so if a storm comes it doesn't
let it get blown away that way. But uh, you know you need

(36:04):
to check and see what you havefor a basepad before you start trying to
secure it thinking that's gonna, uhclear up the issue that you're having.
But yes, it's it's done allthe time. Uh. Look what I
would do rather than trying to doit yourself. Next time you have the
unit serviced, tell them to secureit for you, because if they're if
they're really doing a complete tune upin six servicing that unit like it should

(36:30):
be, they're gonna have it openedup where they can take care of that
and it shouldn't cost you but afew bucks to get it done, if
anything. So seven one three twoone two five eight seven four. That's
seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four And I'll see what I

(36:50):
can do to help you out hereon Texas Home Improvement. So Trish out
of Taylor Lake Village has a says, little siding trim piece came off during
the hurricane, just need someone toput it back on. Who would you
recommend? Thank you? So you'renot gonna like this answer, but I'm
gonna recommend you do it yourself. And here's why. If all it is

(37:15):
is one piece of trim. Thatway, if you pay a contractor to
come out and take care of itfor you, it is going to be
unbelievably expensive. Whether the contractor rollshis truck out to spend all day putting
siding on your home, or herolls that truck out to just put up

(37:38):
one little piece of siding that'll takehim all of ten minutes. He's got
to charge you the same for rollingthat truck. And you know the pay
for all those the time that's involvedin that, you know it gets absorbed
when you're doing a whole house, but when you've got to do for just

(38:00):
that one little piece, you're probablylooking at a couple hundred bucks to get
that one little piece put on.So by doing it yourself, you save
all that. Now, if youcan't do it yourself, you'll have to
maybe get a handyman or something likethat, because I'm going to give you
two issues. One, I don'tthink anybody's still putting aluminum siding on in

(38:23):
the Houston area, so there's probablynot a company to call to get it.
And two, right now after thestorm, getting somebody out there to
do something little like this who isa true contractor. It's not going to
happen, no offense, but thisis just going to be too small for

(38:46):
a reputable contractor to be able tocome out and do. So that's reading
I'm saying. This would be agreat do it yourself project. And if
you can't do it, maybe oneof your kids can come over and do
it. Uh, maybe you've gota grandkid or a neighbor or somebody who

(39:08):
can work on it and save youa whole lot of money, because like
I said, it's just going tobe unbelievably expensive. To have somebody come
out to work just one little piecethat way. Again, if you got
a question seven one three two onetwo five eight seven four. That's seven

Seven one three two one two fiveeight seven. Or let's head to

(44:00):
Willis, Texas. Kevin, howcan I help you? Hey, Jim?
How's it going? Hey? Listen? So and I have a four
bed, two bedroom house and ourtwo bathroom and in the second bathroom it's
I think the shower is just oneof those it looks like the cheap plastic

(44:21):
stuff. But the tile in mymaster bedroom, I mean there's just mold
and mildew. And is that isbetween the tiles or there supposed to be
grout or am I supposed to putlike some kind of calking in can I
but I can't keep that clean? Is that a humidity problem you think?
Or more than likely moisture has gottenbehind the grout. It gets and it

(44:46):
probably doesn't have a concrete back orboard. It has sheet rock back there,
and so it starts to mold andmildew and rot. And what you'll
find is, over time, eventiles will start to come off as that
sheet rock gets wetter behind there.Well, I watched them build it.

(45:07):
I don't know if we're talking right, but they put that green board and
then there was some kind of redI don't know, red liquid or red
taper. Yep, But I guesswere they supposed to put a sealant on
the on the on the groud.I've just never had it. I thought
keep the shower clean for some reason. Yep. No, you can put

(45:27):
a sealant on it. But alot of the newer grouts have celants on
them already, so you don't haveto add it after the fact. But
typically when it's a mildew and moldslike that growing, it's because moisture is
getting through behind to that green rock. Green rock is not meant to be
behind showers. It was meant tobe on the walls in the bathroom.

(45:49):
And contractors screw this up all thetime. And I've got to take a
break for news, traffic and weather. I'm gonna put you on hold,
Kevin, we can finish addressing this. Let's talk real quick about unburst shutters.
That this is the perfect example ofsomething you can do to your home
that will not only make it morebeautiful, but more energy effishient as well.

great reason. They insulate two tothree times better than a traditional wood shutter.
And that construction of it, it'smade of Pollywood. It's guaranteed to
never warp, crack, chip,or peel. So if you're thinking about
shutters for your home to make itmore comfortable, take a look at Sunburst

And I'll see what I can doto help you out. Don't forget about
our website thipro dot com. It'sthere's a resource to help you out twenty
four seven. Again, it's tchiprodot com. When we left, I
was talking with Kevin, and allright, Kevin, now we got a

(48:45):
little bit more time to go intothis a little bit further. But green
rock was manufactured to go in bathrooms, but not where the tile is.
Where the tile is, they're supposedto be using a concrete backer board.
And what a lot of contractors aredoing is they use the green rock around

(49:06):
where the tile is and they're usingjust the regular sheet rock in the rest
of the bathroom. And green rockis a moisture resistant where concrete backer board,
water's not going to hurt it atall. And so grout lines entile
does leave water. Even if youput a seiler on it, it's still
going to allow moisture through it.And over time, you start getting moisture

(49:31):
into that sheet rock back there andit starts to deteriorate, and usually after
about twenty to thirty years, that'swhen you'll start getting tile that pops loose.
So it takes a long time, but long before that happens, you've
got the mold and mildew problems comingthrough the route lines. So and there's

(49:55):
there is nothing you will do tosee over that ground. I'm just I'm
not fixing nothing, nope. SoI just need to rink that out.
And I'd be willing to do thattoo, because you know that that that
makes sense because you know they ohsorry, go ahead, No, no,
you're you're heading down the red roadthere too. And it and it

(50:15):
stays and it stays dirty. Yeah, yep, yeah, uh okay,
Well I I, me and mywife couldn't figure out why we couldn't keep
this shower clean. I mean Icouldn't figure it out. I could ask
you one other question, absolutely.Uh outside on the front porch. Yeah,
outside on the front porch. Theyuh, you know, I got

(50:37):
my eve or whatever. But theyencased the two poles and like decorative cedar
and is cedar. Uh. Idon't explain this, but does it kind
of warp like it like regular woodor does is it supposed to be stronger
because it's kind of coming apart atthe seams. But I see they just
used little nails on there, andmaybe I'll go back and put screws in

(50:59):
there. Yeah. Cedar typically doesnot warp and twist like other lumbers do.
It stays nice and true. SoI mean, do they make phony
seedar? I mean, the guydidn't do right in my bathroom and I
just wasn't a custom built home oranything. But I mean it looks like

(51:22):
cedar. I mean, you knowit looks like I mean, is there
phony theater? I mean I don'tknow, no, no, But you
know what cedar will tend to dois, uh, it doesn't twist,
but like if you got an eightfoot board, it'll it'll tend to become
a smiley face, you know, the two ends will turn up. Uh.

(51:45):
And so if they just used littlenails, yeah, and if they
just use little finished nails, itjust wasn't strong enough to withstand the the
seedar trying to warp a little bitthat way, But it doesn't twist,
it stays straight. It's it's it'sjust if you lay it down, the

(52:08):
two ends of the board aren't goingto be touching it. It it,
like I said, turns up toa smile. So you should be able
and seedars pretty flexible. Is thatthe maintenance I really do? Yeah,
that's it on seedar and you shouldbe able to push that back into place
and refasten it. Okay, okay, my friend, Well, I certainly

(52:36):
appreciate you and your and your wifewill love you when you give her a
new bathroom. Yeah, it's shereally Uh, she's been on me for
a while, and I'm glad Ididn't go put that flex seal on her
because I was gonna go get theflex seal because the guy says, you
don't even need the call gun,and I said, well, let me
call because I'm probably just putting aband date on it. Well, I

(53:00):
will tell you. I just putsome flex seal on something I had that
had a little leak. It's aI'm camping this week and I've got a
tank that I can use to pulloff the waste water and such, and
that had a little crack in it, and that The flex seal works great
for sealing stuff like that up,but it doesn't smooth out very nice,

(53:22):
you know. It's it's not ait's not a nice finished look when it's
done. So all right with that, Okay, I got you, Okay,
Yeah, you have a great day, Kevin. Seven one three two
one two five eight seven four. That's seven one three two one two five

(53:46):
eight seven four. And I'll seewhat I can do to help you out.
Dennis and Katie, how can Ihelp you? Hey, good afternoon,
Jim. So my home in theKaty area, it's approximately twenty years
old, and with the recent hurricane, with the horizontal wind coming in,

(54:07):
we had some windows leaking. Ihad a chance to get upstairs there and
take a look at it, andI think it's the stripping. I think
that's the correct term around the edgesof the window. If that is in
fact it, what would you suggestas far as repairing it? Well,

(54:27):
I was gone when the storm hit, but I have the same problem at
my house. My brother went overand looked at it, and yeah,
the strip between the two windows cameloose, and it looked like the wind
got up behind it and put waterthat ran down behind. So I'm just
going to reattach the same board, recock and seal everything. And I'm thinking

(54:52):
that's really all. It's gonna neednow. I'm a little concerned when the
windows when the house was built, did they put the right flashing around the
window itself, because even if waterwent in there, it shouldn't have run
down like it did. But that'ssomething I have to take a look at.

(55:15):
But if all it is is atremboard on your case came up and
let moisture get water get in behindit, then you should be able to
reattach it, recock and seal everythingand be okay okay. And if I
was gonna have somebody come out andlook at it and either repair it or

(55:35):
replace the windows. And Katie, who would you recommend? Oh, Texas
remodel teams window division, without question. Texas Remodel teams. Yep, you
can reach them at two eight onesix one two fifty nine ninety one.

(55:57):
Thank you, Sarah, you betyou take care. I'm gonna and again
seven one three, two one twofive eight seven four going out to sergent
Texas. Ed. How are youtoday? I'm doing great, Jim,
Thanks for taking my call, mypleasure. But my question for you is,

(56:22):
I've got a very steep roof.I think it's like twelve twelve or
something, and I've got a ridgebent on the top, and the wind
blew the rain into the ridge bentand it came down, so it came
down in the attic. I'm lookingat trying to look for something called a
uh it's a new ridge bent upthere, shingle vent two, I think

(56:46):
it is. I want to getyour h It's got different baffling in it
than the one that I have rightnow. Just wondering what you think about
that. I'm not familiar with thatone. And I know there is a
hurricane and you know it, andthat is to keep the wind and stuff
out. But look, if theonly time you had this issue was when

(57:12):
this storm came in, I probablywould not get overly concerned this, you
know. I know it was labeledas a Class one hurricane and all that,
but you look at the damage itdid. Something Something was badly wrong
in the classification I think of thisstorm. I know a lot of the

(57:34):
damage was caused by tornadoes and stufflike that. But you know, I've
lived in Texas for gosh over fiftyyears, fifty years now, I guess,
and I've been through hurricanes and stuff, been through stronger hurricanes than this.

(57:55):
I have not seen this kind ofdamage out of a class one ever,
right, Well, I've pa whatit was two years two years ago
when Nicholas came through, I hadthe same thing happen with it. Okay,
and you know I want to thenyou got the repair of getting the

(58:15):
water spots out of the ceiling.Yep. I went into my smoke detector
and set it off on me becauseit shorted it out. I'm just wanting
to clear this problem up. Well, and like I said, if this
was the only time, then Iprobably wouldn't do anything. But you've had
it happen a previous time, thenyes, it does need to be addressed.

(58:35):
And yes they do make hurricane ridgefence, and that's that's what you're
gonna want to get. Uh.I'm not familiar with this particular one that
you just said, if that's ahurricane one or not. Uh, but
just verify it with them. Andthe question to ask him is what kind
of winds will it withstand? Rightright? Just like the windows? Okay,

(58:57):
Well, I'll just google a hurricaneridgebat thenere we going with that?
Okay? Well, thanks for yourtime. I appreciate you. You bet
take care and again seven one threetwo one two, five, eight,

Jim Dutton is not perfect, buthe's always right. Here's more with Jim
on Texas Improvement. Hey, welcomeback to Texas Home Improvements, your old

(01:02:07):
home Improvement source seven one three twoone two five eight seven four. We're
gonna head out to Alvin. Tim, this is Jim. How can I
help you? Hey, Jim,thanks for taking my call, sir.
You bet so. I purchased ahome in Alvin a couple of weeks before
the storm hit, and I'm notreal familiar with the area. Basically,

(01:02:30):
it decimated the backside of my fencein the left side, and there's like
a creek that runs behind my fence. It's not something I can fix myself.
I can't get back there and supportit back up. So I'm looking
for either Due West or somebody youcan recommend. I could come out here
and you know, assess the damageand tell me what I need to do
to get a fixer. Yeah,I don't do fencing, uh at two

(01:02:53):
West, but and I don't knowa fence contractor for Alvin but you say
you can't get back there is afence contractor going to be able to.
I can get back there, butit's kind of sloped going down to there's
just property behind it. It's kindof a creek bed, so to get

(01:03:15):
like supports back up. It pulledthe concrete, the four bout four concretes
that are in the ground, Itpulled it all out. It destroyed it.
So I just don't know. Iwant someone refutable. I don't know
anybody around here. Like I said, I'm new to the area that might
be able to address that situation forme. Yeah, hang on just one
second. Let me see if I'vegot this guy's number with me real quick

(01:03:38):
here, because if I do,he may be able to Oops, let's
see. No, I do not, okay, And I don't think he

(01:04:00):
would go all the way to Alvin. Uh So, I hate to tell
you, I just don't know anybodyfor down in that area. No worries,
no worries. Okay, I'll keepdoing some preacall on my end.
There you go, Thank you, sir, Thank you, Jim bye again
her number seven one three two onetwo five eight seven four. We're gonna

(01:04:25):
head up to Conroe, Michael,Welcome to Texas home and for Hello,
Hello, Howry, Jim, wonderful, how about you. It's a long,
sad story. Uh listen, Uh. In the wake of this last
storm, I've been threatening over thecourse of the last several storms to get
a whole house generator. I like, you know, I just like having

(01:04:49):
my electricity and my TV all everybodyelse. I don't know him, but
anyway, I've been talking to severalseveral several people, salesman and companies,
and I've kind of got it narroweddown. And I don't want to mention
any brand names, everything but anationally known brand. He's sure. I

(01:05:10):
was really disappointed in hearing all ofthe bad reports and lawsuits and things against
this particular brand name. It's okay, yes, it's Genera. You know,
with Generaic, it's not what it'sadvertised to be. And I read
a lot of reviews on it,and so I've discounted Generac. I'm not

(01:05:30):
going to consider them, and soI'm down to Color and Cummings, and
it seems like everything is pointing towardscomings. It's got a great warranty,
it's quiet, the footprint is small, but I'm arguing, if you will,
how big do I need to getit. I've read these where people

(01:05:53):
say, though they're supposed to geta twenty four, but then they got
by with a twelve or at eighteen. And here I got this guy telling
me I need a twenty seven.You know, I don't want to spend
money. Issue with seven I absolutelydid it, sure, But the issue
with going smaller. What they dowhen they figure out what you need is

(01:06:14):
go through and add up all thestuff in your house as though everything was
on at at the same time. And that's how much power they set the
generator to do. So as longas you know that you're only going to
run certain items at certain times, you can start going smaller. Okay,

(01:06:38):
So so I don't less, sayso less equals smaller, Less equals smaller.
Absolutely yeah, I mean the feweritems you run, the smaller generator
you can have. Well, mywife would disagree with you, but give
me a TV, a coffee pot, and air conditioner. I'm happy.
You know you're gonna her make youdinner still though, aren't you. I

(01:07:02):
man, i'd call out uber orsomething I don't know, but uh,
anyway, and that's something I didn'tknow, you know, less as smaller,
but there's a wonderful reviews on Comingsand you know, it's a smaller
footprint, and quite honestly, itseems overall the power the gas usages if

(01:07:27):
you would, I'm gonna be goingwith gas natural or gasoline. Uh natural
gas. I want to have permanentrun out through the gash. Yeah,
I like to smoke, and I'dforget and drop the cigarette and that gas
can then I'd have all kinds oftrouble. Yep. But uh so,
anyway, I do want to go. I do want to say one thing

(01:07:48):
on on the reviews that you've read. Yeah, and I don't I do
not argue with anybody that that jennerRak has had issues with some of their
units. So has Cummings, sohas Cohler. You're gonna see more complaints
though on Generak for one big reason. They're eighty percent of the market exactly,

(01:08:15):
and so don't. So when whenyou start looking at reviews like that,
you have to take into account thesize of the business, the share
of the business that a particular companyhas in looking at those reviews. So
make sure you check for complaints onthe others as well. And I got
no issues with going with the CummingsCommings make some great motors with that.

(01:08:42):
I gotta let you go because wegot to take a break for new trafficking
weather. We'll be back with moreTexas home improvement. Let's talk real quick
about Concord window film. You know, if the rooms in your home have
a lot of windows and it's hot, you may be able to take care
of it with just some window film. Maybe you're getting too much glare coming
through your windows and you want tocut that down. Maybe you got neighbors

(01:09:05):
staring through your windows. You wantto get a little privacy, You got
sliding glass doors that are just heatingup your floors and furniture. Call Concord
window film. It's a professional gradefilm, not the cheap stuff you get
like on Amazon. In that andyou can install it yourself, and it's
customized based on what you need.I like the stuff I was just talking

(01:09:28):
about, So you can go froma dark tent to give you privacy to
a tent so light you can't eventell it's there. But all of the
window film they sell blocks up toninety nine percent of the uv ras from
coming through your windows. Call Concordwindow film at eight eight eight two zero
six one four one three. We'reback to Texas Home Improvement. Home improvement

(01:09:53):
advice, tips and information for youand your mama. Here's Jim Dotty.
Hey, welcome back to Texas HomeImprovements. Your total home Improvement source seven
one three, two one two fiveeight seven four that's head to sugar Land

(01:10:15):
and Don Welcome to Texas Home Improvement. Thanks very much, Jim. I
got a question about commercial expansion joints. I've got a building with a parking
lot and a wrong way. It'ssomething I'm debating to do. And of
course some of the old redwood is, you know, going out of it.
So I've gotten one bid and Iwanted to get your take on it.

(01:10:39):
I know what to do is totake out most of the wood you
can, and uh, then you'vegot to fill a void out. And
one guy wants to use a seamangrout to fill it up. And I've
been told you sometimes use the backride, but he said, don't use
the back ride because it lets waterget close to the to the reinforce reinforcing

(01:11:01):
bars and they'll rust them out aftera while. Anyway, So you go
down about fill it up. Toabout a half inch, and then you
pour in this cealant self leveling sealant. And the way I've seen them do
it, they take they'll either powerwashit or scrape the edges so the stuff
doesn't curl. And then they tooktwo inch masking tape on either side and

(01:11:26):
took the bucket the cealant and justpoured it down. And they used a
piece of cardboard to basically drop itout a little bit. And that's it.
What is your advice as far asusing the ground in back of rod?
And you know, if not,you know anybody else that kind of
does those. I'm not sure Iwant to do it, but I could.

(01:11:48):
Yeah, I got projects like thatthat I don't want to do.
I can, but I don't wantto do. But I like the self
leveling. I do not like theidea though, putting grout down in there,
simply because it's an expansion joint. The concrete expands and contracts with temperature
and moisture changes, and if youput something solid in there, it doesn't

(01:12:15):
give it the ability to expand andcontract like it needs to. That's the
reason the wood was in there tobegin with the other lines, you know,
that are scored with like either cuttingwith a concrete saw or when the
concrete is poured and wet, yourun a trial across. It's got the
V groove in it. That's justcontrol where the cracks are. But the

(01:12:39):
expansion joints. The reason they usethe back a rod is so that it
can compress and expand like you wantit to. So that makes Yeah,
I would not put the grout downin there. Okay, do you see
guys where you need to clean theedges correct? Career will start curling?

(01:13:00):
Right? Is it better to powerwash it or just scrape it with a
brush you know, you know abattery operator drill with a brush. Nah,
Typically you're good. Typically just hittingit with the pressure washer is really
all you need to do, andthen you got to let it dry good,
right, give it a couple ofgood sunny days, and then just

(01:13:24):
pour it in. Would you takethe do you think taking the two inch
masking tape on either side just tokeep it kind of straight is a good
idea to use a load of that, But yeah, you don't normally have
to do that because if as longas you don't come up too high with
it, it's self levels I mean, it does an excellent job of just
filling out and leveling itself out andyou're done, okay, so just cut

(01:13:47):
just cut open the can a littlebit and just pour it in. I
know they make a canking, butthat's a pain in the buck because you
have to fill it so off.And yeah, they just kind of cut
the thing open and just pour itin there. But I guess you don't
want to goop it all over thescene then either. That kind of makes
it look you So what I whatI would recommend you do is, yeah,

(01:14:08):
that's what I was going to say. I would recommend you put it
because it comes in a five gallonbucket and you're gonna want to transfer it
into something smaller that you can havea small hole in the bottom where you're
able to control how it's coming outand flowing. Something just like a gallon,
like a vinegar plastic vinagor judge orsomething like that. Yep, that

(01:14:30):
would work. Oh yeah, andjust just make it about even at the
top and that's it right, andthat's it. Yeah, don't try to
go over the top. Now,a place called Bilder's Products, it has
all that stuff. You know, anybody else I think you tell me what
there's that equipment place sun Belt here? Is it too correct? And that's

(01:14:55):
what I was just going to say. You can get it at Sunbelt and
you'll have three choic They make itin a regular calking tube. They make
it in the jumbo cawking tubes, which I like using because it's really easy
to control and you're not changing changingout tubes all the time. And then
they make it in those five gallonbuckets. Well, I think I'm gonna
need the five gallon Do you happento know when you open one of those

(01:15:18):
things? I guess I can askthem how long that stuff lasts. I
guess I don't get to do itand everything it was, Yeah, I
gotten. If you seal it backup, I would assume you've got some
time, but I would think ithas a limited shelf life. Yeah,
yeah, Okay, Well, Iguess that's it. Definitely wouldn't put wood

(01:15:39):
back in, and I'm sure, but you don't have to get all the
wood out just enough to, youknow, to be able to have a
you'd leave it down about a halfan inch right until yeah, half to
three half three quarters of an inchsomething along that line. And then just
go over it. Okay, well, when can you come over and help

(01:16:00):
me? Let's see, this istwenty twenty four. Uh, it just
just add about twenty five years.Oh okay, I think it'll be good
for that. Oh yeah, wellI appreciate your showed. Then all right,
you take care and again our No. Number seven one three two one

(01:16:25):
two five eight seven four Victor. How can I help you today? I've
been listening to your show for manyyears and I have something with insurance in
the root. Okay, I needa new root. So I contacted my
insurance company and I asked because oneof the rooting companies salesman was telling me

(01:16:49):
that they're offering a hail resistant shingleand one hundred and sixty milan now win
rating suck ye. Anyway, Igot to bed and I called my insurance
company and I said, is thisa good thing? Is there a money

(01:17:09):
savings for that? And the guyreally didn't know. And he's the agent.
What do you know about hail resistantshingles? And you've been in this
bus a long time? I puta class for hail resistant shingle on my
house in November and it was itwas tested to over one hundred and seventy

(01:17:30):
mile an hour wind rating, andI got a reduction on my insurance of
I can't remember if it was athousand or two thousand a year, so
that is something I think he saidhis is a three like, oh,
I don't know, one and threequarter size hail or something. So okay.

(01:17:50):
But one more question. This maysound sorry, they're stupid, but
if I have a hail resistant shingleand one hundred and sixty molina a wind,
why do I need homeowners insurance becauseyour roof isn't the only thing that
can get damaged? Well, Iguess like a fire, you know,

(01:18:14):
sure, I mean you can havea fire, you can have I had
a car one time that hit myhouse. Okay, so a tree could
fall down and hit your house.Yeah, but then yeah, no,
no, I understand, I understand. But I was thinking, because that's

(01:18:38):
one of the first things the insuranceis going to be hold as your roof,
you know, So I was thinkingthat's number one. You know,
it is a huge issue because thecost of roofs have skyrocketed, the deductibles
have gone out of sight. Soyes, and what you're going to be
looking for is a Class four hailresistance shingle, and that's where you get

(01:19:01):
the deductions and you know it likeon my personal house, my deductible,
I can't remember, geez, whatwas it. At one point it was
six thousand. I think I wasup to a twelve thousand thousand dollars deductible
now on the roof. So,yes, the Class four costs me more

(01:19:23):
money, but it's gonna do.It's gonna save me in the long run
because I've been in my house twentyyears and have put four roofs on the
darn thing. So I'm done doingthat. But take a lot of no,
go ahead, I'm sorry. Iwas gonna say the one I put

(01:19:45):
on my house is a Reva byF wave bye bye, who f wave
f dashwave wave. That's a that'sa roosing material. That that's the class
four shingle that I put on myroof. Yes, sir, oh okay,

(01:20:08):
Now he was saying Class three. So and he said there is a
hell resistant shingles. So I'm gonnago back to my insurance company and see
what kind of savings I can get. Yeah, and ask for the saving
difference between a Class three and aClass four okay, I sure will listen.

(01:20:28):
Thank you and listen to you.Ben, Thank you, sir.

no we have If you got waterstill under the tile, regrouting is not
