Mitch Chanager with a three run double in the bottom
of the ninth MS win in probable four to three
over the Tigers last night, now sixty and fifty six
tied it with the Astros for first place in the
Al West. The Astros, by the way, this weekend are
in Boston. The Rangers are at Yankee Stadium Mariner, starting
a three game series today with the New York Mets.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Bryce Miller versus Jose Cantana.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Tonight Logan Gilbert will go tomorrow when Luis Castile will
go on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (00:57):
According to Mike garyl Folo, forty nine Ers have made
a renewed effort in recent days to strike a long
term deal with wide receiver Brandon Ayuk. Brandon Ayuk has
responded to that on social media by saying, Niners be
in the media every day. It's two options out there.
Pick one and stop dropping reports wire wide receivers such divas.
(01:18):
It's unbelievable wide receivers and corners. Man Olympics spoiler alerted
if we.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Go three two Spain where they five to three, extra
time whatever. France to claim men's soccer gold today France
in USA and the basketball gold medal game tomorrow at
twelve thirty our time in Hikari. Richardson earning her first
ever ever Olympic gold medal with the anchor leg of
the women's four by one hundred meter relay.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
This dude in Paris.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
Speaking of soccer, Sounders got a big win last night
in the League's Cup three to one over the first
place LA Galaxy. They move ahead to the round of sixteen,
where they're going to be facing Pumas on Monday at
seven thirty at Lumen Baseball Scoreboard.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Couple of games going on after one Nationals one Angels
nothing or lead the Raise one nothing top of the
first A's and Jays getting underway from Toronto.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
News in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Vikings sending corner Andrew Booth to Dallas in exchange for
another corner. Nay Sean Wright all right back here at
the Boeing Classics. No Kami Ridge high top the eighteenth grade.
We think we're gonna hear from or see VJ. Singhings
group coming through here, by the way, in a matter
of minutes. So this crowd's gonna get bigger and bigger
and bigger. Jackson in front of us because Fred Couples
is right behind VJ. Singh and Freddie is the main
(02:26):
attraction here at the Boeing Classics. So we got Logan
Gilbert joining us here in a few minutes, We're gonna
have humil and joining us at five. Greg Lewis next
segment talking some Husky football. Was on with Chuck and
Buck this morning at seven thirty. I got a text
last night from Ashley Lola Ryan at about nine o'clock
at night, Hey, can you join us tomorrow at seven
thirty or nine, which says one simple thing to me.
(02:49):
They had somebody booked that build out and they needed
someone to fill in this morning at seven thirty or eight,
and of course I said, fine, I'll do it. So
it was on with those guys this morning talking Husky football.
And you know, look, I mean there's a couple of
guys that I think are gonna surprise people.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Ain't Jonah Coleman.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
I look, you know, maybe the hardcore Husky fan knows
the name Jonah Coleman, the transfer from Arizona, But let's
face it, the majority of fans are not die hards.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
They're just Johnny cum Lately's.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
They just identify as Husky fans but don't really have
any idea what the hell is going on. So Jonah
Coleman is going to be a guy that people will
look to, I think a lot to the tight end
who's got to watch his brother, by the way, the
transfer from Arizona is gonna be a guy that people
will look to. Adam Muhammad is a freshman that doesn't
look like a freshman. He'll be a guy that eventually
(03:37):
with turn heads. I think Demon Williams as the backup
quarterback at some point in time whenever he gets to play.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
I mean, he's the air apparent for me.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
He's the guy next year, unless you had Fisch takes
off and brings Demon Williams to Florida with him next season.
He's the next quarterback for the for the Huskies, and
I also think, I think for the linebacking corps. You know,
I just wonder. Carson Brunner has been a good linebacker,
but he isn't gonna great linebacker. He's been a great
special teams player, phenomenal special teams player, blowing guys up
(04:05):
right and left. But up until the last you know,
or really the last couple of years, it was the
Eddeo Lafocio show. Guys like that Carson Bruner out there,
but his forte wasn't a linebacker with special teams. So
I'm curious to see Jackson if Carson Brunner turns into
more of a second or first team All Big Ten
type linebacker this year.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
It does remind me a little bit of this. I
know it was a little bit earlier in his career,
but the ben Burg Curven situation right started out as
a great special team so you could see the tackling ability.
And then after you know, he established a spot, other
guys graduated. He had that chance to go become a star,
and like Carson, is all about the opportunity, right, all right, well.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Do what he did.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
You you come out, you show out, you see that
not only you know can you be a great tackler there,
You can be a great tackler on the defense. You
can be a leader on a defense that has so
many new faces. And obviously you have cam Fab in
the back who's doing the same thing. Yeah, but those
two guys have to step up in that re and
show that they are here to basically take this defense
and not lose a drop, not lose too much from
(05:07):
where this team was well.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
And look, they weren't, by any stretch elite defensively a
year ago. I mean they were. They kind of reminded
me of the two thousand and five Seahawks and that
they were great when they had to be right. They
were great in the red zone against Texas when they
had to be They were great against Oregon when they
had to be right. They were great against Oregon State
when they had to be great against cam Ward when
they had to be so, I mean, Jackson will never
(05:30):
see a season like we had a year ago. From
a TV ratings perspective, that season last year was absolutely bonkers.
To have every game decided in the final couple of
minutes or less, every single game for thirteen weeks in
a row seemingly, I mean, obviously once you got past
the Michigan State game, things were just crazy, like starting
(05:52):
in October. But you'll never see a season like that
ever again. So that that clutch gene that those guys
had last year, I think that's a real trait, absolute
real trait, and the Huskies had that. Mitch Handiger's got
that trait right now going with the Mariners. You know,
he may not be great, you know, one through seven
and one through eight, but he's got this unbelievable production
(06:12):
that comes alive when the lights are the brightest and
you need they need to come playoff time, and you'll
need it down the stretch. So I don't think the
Huskies are gonna have that clutch gene again like we
saw a year ago, because I've never seen it before.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Ye Ever, in.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Forty five years of watching Husky football, I've never seen
a team perform that way.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
When the un was it was about to hit the fan.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
And to me, that's almost the biggest reason why they
got to where they got.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
To last year. And that makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
I do think that this team, though they may not
have the same clutch gene. But I was talking with
Dick last week or maybe it was on Monday, and
one of the things that you kind of can do
is you can look it on paper and you can
see all the new faces, and you can kind of
hope that, Okay, if the offensive line does this, if
the offensive line does that. But you look at the
recipe that Jedfish has built with transfers and with recruit
(07:00):
and it sort of goes to the idea of if
they can just put it all together.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, I don't think that this team is any is
too far off from an eight win season. All right,
let's do this.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Joining us right now from T Mobile Park, one of
two Mariner all stars joining us right now on the
radio show Pitching Tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
I believe against the Mets.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Our friend, your friend, everybody's friend, Logan Gilbert with us
on the phone, Logan at Softy, how are you man?
Speaker 3 (07:25):
What's going on?
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Hey, guys, I'm all good.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
How are you doing.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I'm good.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
I appreciate you doing this, man, thank you so much
so from your perspective. And I'm sitting home watching that
thing in bed last night because I'm old now when
I go to bed at eight o'clock at night, I'm
watching Mitch Haniger with that double.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
But tell us your vantage point, what the.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Reaction was in the dugout, how you reacted to that
double by Handy to get that clutch win last night?
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Man, Yeah, that was unbelievable. We've definitely needed that one.
And something about Handy going up in the ninth I
don't know, you just feel good about it. You know,
he said so much success and he's just so confident,
so sure of who he is, that that's the guy
you want up in that situation, and of course he
comes through again.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Well, Logan Gibert's with us, and it's funny we just
got done talking about that. I think that that clutch
gene is a real thing. Like some guys have a
great arm, some guys have great eyes, some guys have
great speed, great hands. The clutch gene, to me is
a real trait. Do you agree with that or is
that just more timing and maybe some luck in your opinion, yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
I mean probably a little bit of both. But I
think I think some guys have it are a little
bit more than others. I think it's more like your
ability to slow your breath down or be sure of yourself,
your confidence, not doubting yourself. Mitch is really good about
that stuff. He takes care of all his business, like physically, mentally,
(08:46):
all that stuff. He's very well rounded. So I think
he does a really good job of slowing the game
down in big moments, and some guys are probably better
at that than others.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Well.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Log and Gibert's with us again from T Mobile Park
pitching against the match tomorrow and Logan and you know,
a lot of people have described this season so far
as frustrating. It's funny because if you were to told
people back in March that the team is in first
place on the ninth of August, nobody would have turned
that down, right, nobody would have turned that down.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
But it feels like there's some meat on the bone there.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Would you say that this has been is frustrating the
word that you would use to describe the way the
team has performed overall?
Speaker 3 (09:21):
How would you characterize the first four and a half
months of.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
The year, it's weird.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
It's a weird balance, like you said, because we are
in first and I think everybody would take that, but
we also know we're not playing up to our standards.
And I think, like you said, I think we have
a lot more in us. And I think that's a
good thing because we haven't. We haven't been always one
hundred percent of what we're capable of, but still put ourselves.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
In a good position.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
So if we get rolling here, if we stay healthy,
get a couple guys back, all that kind of stuff
at the right time. I think, you know, the end
of the season and the postseason is all about timing
and who gets hot, and I think we have that
in us.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Well.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Love going to tell you what after that last game
in LA against the Angels, you had a lot of
time off, And I've said before that I think starting
pitchers like you are are thoroughbreds, and thoroughbreds were born
to run. And I didn't I didn't like you getting
that much time off. Did you did you feel like
there was some russ for you coming off the All
Star break or is that just sports talking nonsense from
guys like me.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Oh no, not at all.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
I don't think there's any russ. I think I'm throwing
the ball really well. I'm not concerned about any of
that kind of stuff, So I'm actually surprised if there
would be any talk of that. I feel really good
about where I'm at when I'm capable of Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
No, I think I think.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Now I'm talking about like specifically coming off that nine
day rest that you had, like that first game back
against the Angels, that second game back against Boston. I mean,
you were phenomenal in your last start against Philadelphia, obviously,
did you feel any of that coming off the break,
I guess is what I meant.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
Oh no, not at all. I feel good.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
I always want to be out there, but I appreciate
the rest and I think it only makes us better.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
How uh, how much do you discuss with Scott's service
how far and how long you can go? Because you
look to me Logan like a guy that could go
one hundred plus easy, ninety five plus easy and every
game you throw. Yet you've only been allowed to do
that a handful of times this year. So how much
are you and Scott on the same page with your
pitch count this late in the year.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Yeah, it's always It's always up to them and their decision. Ultimately,
I think they know us all really well individually and
what we're capable of, and he knows that I always
want to be out there, so I always just assume
I'm going back out unless they tell me otherwise. But
ultimately I know they're going to do with stress for
me health long term.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah, I have no question about it. Logan Gilbert again
is with us on the radio show. And you've been
here before, right in August September. This is nothing new
to you. I mean this your fourth year now, pitching
this deep in the year. You're kind of like an
og a veteran in this regard. So what is it
about this time of the year that that you need
to focus on to make sure you stay healthy and
you stay fresh. What have you learned about pitch this
(12:00):
late in the year that maybe you didn't know when
you were a rookie four years ago.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
I think I've just been really in tune with my
routine and what I need, how to get myself ready,
stuff like that. I also think there's a temptation maybe
to try to do more or try to change things
up or kind of play outside of yourself. But I
think at this time in the year, late in the year,
you really just trust that you can be yourself, that
(12:25):
we have what it takes and it's not like you
have to be perfect. I think that's one of the
traps to fall into late in the year.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
Yeah, I was gonna ask you about that, because look,
I mean, you guys are obviously twenty six guys, your brothers.
You're locked in all that stuff and would never expect
anyone to criticize any one part of the baseball team.
But sometimes for us it's frustrating watching guys like you
and George and Luis and Bryce and Brian go out
there and pitch great games and not get the run support.
Do you think at all about what you're getting offensively
(12:52):
from that side of the ball or are you honestly
completely locked into whatever you're doing and whatever run support
you get is what you get.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
I'm very focused in the moment when it's my start day,
so even between innings, just getting ready for my next
in and go back out there, so I have complete
facing the guys and what they do. It's really fun
when we have a ten run lead, and it's really
fun when it's a tight game for six, seven, eight innings,
I'm on the mound, whatever it is. So I just
love to compete, love to go out there either way.
I think it's a fun challenge.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Well, Logan Gilbert's with us for a few more minutes,
one of two All stars for the MS. So talk
about this Mets team that you'll see this weekend. Not
a lot of data on them, obviously, being a National
League team. Tell me about preparing for a team like
the Mets versus preparing for a team like the Astros
of the Rangers men.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Oh yeah, yeah, those division teams. We've seen a bunch obviously,
so we kind of know how we go about it.
The plans stays pretty similar every time. It's just kind
of a little new territory. It's fun too, just facing
different guys around the league. We're gonna have plenty of
stuff scouting and video and stuff that I'll look over today,
but I think it's fun just getting a chance to
(14:01):
face different guys competition. And they're having a good year
two they're in a good spa right now in the
playoff fun I think, so this is definitely a big
series for us and hopefully we can at least take two,
hopefully three.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Yeah, well, Logan, before you go, I got to tell
you one of the things that I think is awesome
about you is that you've really come into your own,
meaning we can expect you to be dominant home or away.
I mean you were you were not just a tea
mobile park pitcher. The numbers at home phenomenal, numbers away phenomenal.
The whip is incredible at home and on the road.
What are you kind of most proud of that you've
(14:34):
been able to accomplish in your first four years in
baseball besides the obvious, which is making the All Star
team and Colin.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Mom, Yeah, I think my job where I'm at, it's
just consistency is the most important thing and the majors,
but also as the starting pitcher, and I want to
be somebody that the guys can count on every day
to at least give us a chance to win. You know,
a couple of a.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Few times a year that might not happen. But if
I can go out.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
There, put up my best effort and keep the game
close or hopefully out of the game with a lead,
that's that's basically my job, so I'd say the consistency
is most important.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
I love it. Hey man, thanks for doing this. Best
of luck tomorrow. Appreciate this. Go get him. We'll talk soon, buddy.
Thank you, pal.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Yeah, of course, good talking you. Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Guys, you got a man Logan Gilbert with us from
T Mobile Park. I didn't want to give the numbers
for him while he was on the AAR with us Jackson,
because that's like the kiss of death obviously, so I'll wait.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Till he hangs up the phone.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
He's got a two point eight six or excuse me, two
point seven eight Era at home, three point three on
the road, point eight whip at home, point nine to
three to zero on the road, seventy six k's eleven
walks at home, sixty seven to fifteen on the road.
So this is not just a guy that has been
a T Mobile Park product. And there are guys on
this team that are I mean, Bryce Miller is kind
(15:48):
of one of them, or has been for the majority
of the year kind of one of them.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
This dude is not at all.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
He isn't at all, And I think that one of
the things they need from from Logan Gilbert is to
continue pitching just the way we've seen him for his
We need this entire staff because we know the offense
is going to need help, to say the least, over
this next month and a half. So we need guys
like Gilbert Castillo. We need them to be, for lack
of a better word, rocks, and we need them to
(16:14):
continue because honestly, this team doesn't make the playoffs if
they don't have stellar last month and a half.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
No question.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Well, Scott Servis with the media Game one of three,
after last night's walk off win by Mitch Haniger, opening
comments from the skipper and the dugout moments ago.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
You're ready to go against the Mets tonight.
Speaker 6 (16:32):
They've certainly played really good baseball here over the last
couple of months, so they picked it up offensively. For sure,
they have a good bullpen, so it'll be a good
series for us. And you know, last night, coming from
behind like that was some big at bats in the nineteenny,
we're huge. We didn't have a particularly very good series
against Detroit, so nice to salvage a win there and
(16:54):
hopefully it carries some of that momentum into this series
here as we wrap up the home stand so looking
forward to it again. We don't know much about them,
so watching a lot of video falkingard man scout, trying
to get a game plan mapped out, and.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
I think we're gonna be okay, So I'll take any questions.
That's kind of the biggest thing that we just kind
of want to put in your past after that Detroit series.
Speaker 6 (17:13):
I think, you know, to put consistent streaks together or
winning series, you have to do damage against starting pitching,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
And we didn't do a whole lot against any other
starting pitching. Certainly yesterday it was a.
Speaker 6 (17:25):
Bullpen day, but even the bulk guy, we weren't able
to get much traction, get much going, put much pressure
on them.
Speaker 4 (17:30):
So we need to do a better job of that
in this series for sure. Leading into the.
Speaker 6 (17:34):
Detroit series, really, up until the last game Agains Philly,
I thought we were doing that like a week seven
eight games, it was really good.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
We were on the starter early, putting a lot of
pressure on them. We need to get back into doing that.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Does that a matter of getting away from an approach?
Speaker 4 (17:47):
Sure, you know, it's a good question.
Speaker 6 (17:49):
I think you know. Last night it felt to me
it looked a little bit like it did early in
the season. We got pitches to hit, and we kept
fouling them off, and that was a big issue with
us early in the year.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
We just didn't get much going offensively. We got pitches
to hit. I think we got pitches hit last night.
Speaker 6 (18:03):
I just we're getting the ball in play, So we
need to get back on the fastball. You get your pitch,
let's get it in play. You know, tonight's game, we're
throwing Quintana against us. It's the guy who kind of
lives on the edges. You can't chase him around the
strike zone because you're playing into his game. So we
need to be ready to hit, but be disciplined, you know,
understanding that. You know, when you do get your pitch,
take a good swing out. Let's get it in play.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Scott, based on what you do know about the net's line,
but in terms of what youte to see, Bryce delivered
some time.
Speaker 6 (18:30):
Oh, they got a really good top of their Lineup's
really strong, obviously with the Francisco Lindor at the top.
They got Jadi and Martinez in the middle, Alonso a
ton of home runs, they got power, they got a
lot of different ways to beat you.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
You got to control the.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
Top of the lineup, but you can't take your eye
off the bottom of the lineup because those are the
guys that can sneak up.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
And get you.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
And now all of a sudden, you flip over to
the top and there's a couple of guys on base.
So with Bryce, I love where he's at in his
development of his secondary pitches. You've seen him throw more
curve balls lately along with the splitter. He's gonna need
those tonight, along with a good fastball last time out,
probably one of the better fastballs he's had all year.
The velos as trending up, which is a good sign this.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
Type of year. So we need to go out and
from him.
Speaker 6 (19:08):
You know, we got to control on the top of
their lineup, but don't take your eye off the bottom
of the line up.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
Either we'd be excited to see ps pregame or.
Speaker 6 (19:16):
Not a game.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
I'm always excited to see Eddie Diaz.
Speaker 6 (19:20):
I've got a long history with him. When he first
came to the big leagues, had a special haircut thanks
to Eddie Diaz.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
So there's a lot of history there, and you know,
he's a special guy.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
He really is.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
When you see young players like that come to the
big leagues.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
It came out of our system play such a big
impact for a team at that time, and you know,
things happened on the business side of it.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
You know, we're a situation.
Speaker 6 (19:41):
We had to trade him over to New York. But
you know, it's been fun to watch his career take off.
And hopefully we don't see him in this series.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
That's the goal. He gets three days off in Seattle.
Speaker 6 (19:50):
He can enjoy the surroundings and the city and go
to Pike Park all the fun things.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
But hopefully it doesn't show up a team multiple cuss.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Yeah, when DIA's former Mariner who you remember they had
