and we wouldn't have it any other way. How do
you Taco Time, customize your meal and order ahead on
the Taco Time Northwest EP. Taco Time Time for something
different now with Rick new Heiseel. Here's Softy and Dick.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
All right, big fans for Taco Time for sponsoring this
shin dig every single Thursday. Rick new Heidel joined us
on the radio show as Taco Time Pick of the
Week is coming in a matter of minutes. Trying to
get off the oh and three starts to begin the
two thousand and twenty four college football season. You know
what I say about that Dick by the dip, Baby's
by the dip. That's Penn State almost lost to Bowling Green.

(00:50):
For God's sakes, never mind covering the thirty five Rick,
how are you?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I am?

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Well?

Speaker 3 (00:56):
But you know what? I love that we go to
the negativity because, as is the case with many programs
that find themselves facing adversity, we will face it straight
on and we will conquer it. We are going to
get back up on the horse. There's two things we're
gonna do.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
There's two things a part of my thought process. Number one,
we can only go up from here for the remaining fifteens.
And then number two, if you if you get it right,
I'll be I'll be starting with that next week, all right,
either way, win or lose, Because let's face it, people
tune into this show not for your analysis. They tune
in for your pick. All right, that's why you're here.
It's why I taco time patients over.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Bowling Green was supposed to be a locked and yes,
Bowling Green had different design on Bowling Green, the falcon said, hey,
look we're going to kick your a million and a half,
but we're also going to give you a game. Yeah,
and that's exactly what happened at Notre Dame as well.
If the Northern Illinois.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Well, no question about that. We got the Apple Cup
though on Saturday, and you know, Dick and I were
talking to Chris Peterson today for tomorrow's radio show. You'll
hear that at four o'clock and Chris was undefeated six
and oh, you were undefeated four and oh. In the
Apple Cup. And you know one thing I want to
talk to Chris about is all you coaches always say
these games are always the same from week to week.

(02:14):
We don't change our process. No one game is more
important than the other, all those coaching cliches blah blah blah.
Did you act like that behind the scenes for the
Apple Cup when you were here?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
No, because the Apple Cup meant so much to us
each and every season in terms of where we were
trying to get to. I mean, the last year we
played the triple overtime thriller, we needed that win just
to have a winning record, right. We had to have that.
We had to get ourselves into a position that we

(02:44):
were going to get the postseason, and we were going
to have that keep the winning streak, winning record streak alive.
I think it was twenty five or twenty six years.
I mean, Washington needed that win. And by the way,
Washington State at the time was a top five, top
ten team and had a chance to get themselves not
only to the Rose Bowl, but also to a national

(03:06):
championship kind of conversation. So that monster game was just that,
a monster game for us.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Here's what worries me as a Husky fan this week. Coach,
It's not necessarily a talent on the field. It's I
feel like the vitriol and the hatred towards Wazoo has
to be fabricated with these players because so many guys
have no idea what this rivalry is all about on
this team. How do you go about doing that as
a coach.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
That's a great point. You know, these rivalry games are
a little bit different because of all the changing names
and faces wearing the uniforms, and especially given the fact
that Washington State has been given, you know, the bad card.
They're no longer in a conference. They're currently a member
of the PAC twelve, but the PAC twelve has two members. Now,

(03:57):
there was news today that four other school from the
Mountain West are going to join the PAC twelve. But
it's just passing the buck as to who has the
bad hand in college football right now. So I agree
with you. The emotional feel for this game is going

(04:18):
to lie. The advantage for the emotion is going to
lie with not only the Washington State team, but also
the Washington State fans.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
No question.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Well, listen, before we kind of dive into the matchup
a little bit, get to the weekend of the Civil
War coming up as well. You mentioned those games against
Wazoo where that Wazuo had a lot on the line,
and maybe nothing crazier than that triple overtime game in
two thousand and two. Close your eyes, Rick and imagine
where you were twenty two years ago, this coming November,

(04:46):
when this right here happened.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Here's Keegel throws to.

Speaker 5 (04:49):
The flat ball is knocked out, it is intercepted, intercepted
by ky Ellis in this game, if the interception stands is.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Over ruling on the field because it was a backward pass.
Washington recovered that backward pass and.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
The game is over, Thank you very much.

Speaker 5 (05:09):
It as a dondale.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
About that, Okay, So I promised my favorite buddies I
would ask you on the record for once and for all.
Was it really a backwards pass?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Was a backwards pass? One? It was a backwards pass,
and Gordon Reese and his crew got it right. And
how much do you want to hug Bob Rondo right now?
How much do you want to hug Bob Rondo and
the voice of the Huskies for all those great calls
that he had over those years. The guy was epic.
I don't know where Bob is today, but please give

(05:43):
him my best rick.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
I'm just trying to figure out what type of game
plan Jed Fish is going to pose offensively on Wazoo.
I mean, I think that the common thought would just
be give it to number one and get out of
the way, because Jonahle has been an absolute beast the
first couple weeks of the season, and the Cougar defensive
line looks a little bit undersized, and I was talking
to Greg Lewis about that. He says, no, this is

(06:06):
what you throw the kitchen sink at him. You haven't
shown anything the first couple of weeks. You just go
air raid on him and throw for four hundred yards.
So how do you think Jed Fish is going to
attack this game?

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Well, you're right that everything's available to Jed, But the
facts of the matter, when you can run the ball,
you can control the game. And so he'll start with
a running game. But Will Rogers and his air raid
background gives him great flexibility as to what he wants
to do to this team. And you want to play

(06:38):
a little keep away from Washington State, given the fact
that their quarterback just ran for one hundred and ninety
seven yards against Texas Tech. So this is a game
like Jed's used to from his background in the NFL,
where time of possession is also a weapon.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, you know Steve Belichick's defense, Is he more prepared
to face something like this because of his time in
the NFL? I mean, obviously a face guy's like Lamar,
You face guys like Kyler Murray. You know Russell Wilson
back in the day. I mean he's seen running quarterbacks before.
Does he have more of a kind of a treasure
chest of schemes to go to because of his time

(07:16):
in the NFL? Does that even matter in this game
on Saturday?

Speaker 3 (07:20):
If you go back to the Bill Belichick and obviously
Steve was there for the ride, If you go back
to the Bill Belichick era of taking away what you
do best, then that's going to be the equation here
as they try to cobble together a plan for Washington State.
I remember the Ram Super Bowl. I think the Patriots

(07:43):
won thirteen to three or something like that, and they
basically played zero coverage. But the safety who was attached
to somebody in coverage to make it zero looked like
he was playing cover one or playing center field. You
never ever took shots like you were involved in.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
You know, I get it out of my hand and
I can make big plays because of the ability to
play that. I think Steve will be much involved in
zero coverage so that they have an extra guy in
the box to accommodate the quarterback run game, and I
think they'll be ahead of the game in that regard.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
What can we glean, if anything, from the fact that
Washington's top three in the country in yards per carry
right now behind an offensive line that nobody knew who
any of these guys were three weeks ago. Can we
clean anything going against Eastern Michigan and Weaver State.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Yeah, I think we have to pump the brakes given
the competition. But it's a great place to start because
it allows you so many things to do offensively, whether
it be run the ball, whether it be play action,
or whether it be dropped back. With a guy who
has all these reps in his head and all these
you know, pictures in his head over the years of

(08:56):
air raid offense, so Jed has the ability to cobble
together anything he wants in offense as it pertains, and
it will help the defense as he looks at exactly
what they have to deal with in terms of how
important time of possession is in this particular contest and
in this game, I think it's huge.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yeah, Well, Rick new Heiseel's with us on the radio show.
What would your message be if you were Jake Dicker?
Honestly behind the scenes, what do you say to your
guys if you're Jake Dicker before this game?

Speaker 3 (09:26):
Listen, this is the Apple Cup. This is exactly what
we all look forward to each and every year. It's
an in state rivalry. It will be remembered for a lifetime.
But for our fans, not necessarily for us because we
were here, because we want to be here. For our fans,
this is an opportunity to say, hey, we're still here.

(09:46):
We're still here. We're not just subjected to whatever, you know,
the television market says we are, or the pac twelve pack,
ten pack, whatever it is right says we are. We
have an op opportunity to say who we are, and
this is a great opportunity to deliver one of the
great gifts of all time to our fan base.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
Well, you mentioned the emotional advantage, and I think you're
exactly right. It favors Washington State. But how long does
that last? How long does Washington kind of have to
just weather the storm, the emotional storm early in this
game before it just settles down and becomes a football game.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Well, this is where Jed has to kind of manage
what the message is to his team. Guys, you're going
to be playing a team that's coming in here like
a hornet snets. They're going to be swirling around. I mean,
we have to be technical about our business in terms
of you know not. I guess the way to say

(10:44):
it is not so much emotion as it is just
absolute know how of what we're doing. And this is
a step along the way. Everybody has said we're six
and six, seven and five teen, we can be much
more than that, and this is a step along that way.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Rick new Hazer with us Rick, before you get your
Talko Time pick of the week, how much trouble is
Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Honestly, I don't think it's trouble. I think he's young enough.
But when you go out and say, hey, we sell
it into this trap, that trap's been there forever, you
have to act like you know that and to just
act is if your players just bought into the hype,
it's your job to make sure that there is no hype.

(11:27):
So you can't spread any blame to the players.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
That's un you.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
This is an important game.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
You know.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
Here's the problem with Marcus Freeman. It is so much
you know, did he have his team ready? It's did
he take the right quarterback? They played against Riley Leonard
he was the duke quarterback a year ago. They also
played against Kyle McCord right led a comeback drive that
went down the field and beat him with Ohio State

(11:54):
in South Bend. Kyle McCord's throwing eight touchdown passes. Riley
Leonard has a you know, shoulder issue where he's listed
as questionable by the Notre Dame public relations public relations people.
This this to me is you better find a way
to cobble together an offense because Perdue, even though they

(12:14):
played Indiana State, Hudson Card went twenty four to twenty
five LAS last time out against Indiana State, and if
he has any kind of day like that against Notre Dame,
you're in trouble again.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
All right, Rick, time for the Taco Time Pick of
the Week. We got to get off the schnide here.
I'm gonna go with the number eleven, the classic burrito,
the tator fries, and of course the fully leaded coke
because we can't do diet. So, Rick, what's your Taco
Time pick of the week?

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Holy smokes. I have gone up and down the schedule
of this week, and I think I'm just going here.
Whenever you're struggling, you just go with a darn good team.
You just go with a darn good team. I'm going
to take Georgia over Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Wow, over Kentucky.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
What's the line of that one?

Speaker 5 (13:02):
It is?

Speaker 3 (13:02):
It's like twenty two or twenty three.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
Let's see Georgia is giving twenty three and a half
at Lexington.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
Okay, yeah, all right.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
I just think I just think the brock Vandergriff is
an old Georgia quarterback. He was three for ten last week.
Something's wrong at Kentucky. South Carolina is not that good.
I just think Georgia rolls.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Let's do it.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Georgia minus the points against Kentucky is Rick new Heisel's
Taco Time pick of the week. All right, man, great stuff,
Enjoy the weekend. We'll talk next Thursday.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
I had a double check to see if he's right
on those numbers, and he was on what numbers? Kentucky
was six of seventeen for forty four yards passing last week.
Good holy smokes. All right, We're going with the Dallas Cowboys,
Dave Dallas Cowboys. I do not like to take big favorites,
but I'm gonna go with Dallas. Yep, they have had

(14:33):
the most wins believe it or not, on the NFC
of any team in the last three years. And you
know when he get those wins. They get him in
September and October. Five and two to start last year,
six and two to start twenty twenty two, six and
one to start twenty twenty one, and twelve of those
seventeen wins would have covered the six point spread. Dallas

(14:55):
is the bully the picks on the little kids at school.
Then when the foot the ball team comes in and
beats their ass in January, they could go crying back
again and they don't go to the Super Bowl. But
that's what Dallas is did the bowlie on the street.
They win in September, they win in October, and then
they fade at the end of the season. Give me
the Cowboys minus six and six and a half against
the New Orleans Saints.
