Speaker 1 (00:00):
Live from the R and R Foundation Specialists Broadcast studio.
Now back to Softie and Dick on your Home for
the Huskies and the Kruken Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
All right, joining us right now on the radio program
head coach of your Sounders FC, our friend Brian Schmetzer,
who apparently has already seen the Twitter post about whose
foot belongs to who I feel bad for him? Well, coach,
we can talk soccer. We can talk about that for
ten minutes.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
So really.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Left to right, Dick Jackson, Softie left to right?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
That would be incorrect.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
No free para shoes? Then, I guess.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Nothing for you. I mean, what was your take though,
I mean they look like athletic feet, you know? To you?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
I God, I can't. My wife makes a really good
turkey meatball orzo soup with fresh bread and I'm so
looking forward to eating it. Now I can't eat dinner.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Hey, I didn't tell you to go on Twitter before
your wife made you a dinner. And by the way,
that does sound delicious save some for us. Well, let's
talk about it. First of all, another draw against the
timbers Man. What happened? And why can't you beat those
bastards here in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
I wish I knew. I wish I knew it would
make a lot of fans happier, It would make me
a lot happier, It make everybody feel better. But you know,
I don't know. I mean, we had the game in control,
you know, even look, even when they scored the goal,
which was a defensive mistake. I mean, we were the
best defensive team in MLS this year. We gave up
(01:46):
a bad goal kind of reminded me of early season
doldrums and then obed. The kid who is having a
great game gets two yellow cards in the space of
four minutes, and basically, you know, that's it. That story
of the game.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
Well, we've heard a lot of complaints around the sports
world in the last week about officiating. We heard in
college football, were heard in the WNBA finals, But it
sounds like the officiating in this game was not very
good either. So how do you handle that and how
bad was it?
Speaker 3 (02:14):
That's that's an interesting question, Dick, because you know, look,
I could sit there and complain and bitch and you know,
just say, yeah, the rest are terrible and that's why
we lost the game. But I want the players to
understand that. Look, we don't control what the referee do,
and there were certain moments in the game when we
were leading one nothing where we certainly had chances to
put that game out of reach. Now the flip side
(02:38):
of that is, I understand the guys get frustrated because
sometimes when the ref's like, the most egregious thing that
that ref did is he had three advantage calls that
he stopped clear goalscoring opportunities for us, and to blow
a foul for us, and it just ruined the flow
of the game. So I get where the players are
(02:59):
coming from, but the rest usually aren't what loses games
for you.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Right Well, Brian Schmeatch is with us on the radio show,
and the Obed Vargas red card legit in your mind,
Jackson says, it was no different than what Portland players
were doing. If that's the case, then why did your
guy get sent off?
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Well, because the first yellow he got, the first yellow
card he got, he deserved it. He shouldn't. He stuck
his foot out try to prevent them from taking a
free quick free kick, so that already put him on notice,
So he should have known better. But defending the kid, yes,
His demonstrative kind of frustration for the ref call and
(03:36):
a foul certainly was echoed by a bunch of Portland
players that night.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Have you noticed over all the officiating being more inconsistent
this year than in years past? And what would you
do to fix it?
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Dick? I think it's I think it's been consistent because look,
I don't I don't waste too much of my time
thinking about the referees. I have good rapport with a
lot of the refereen because I try and talk to them.
I mean, I try and get to know them and
give them tips. The fourth official that's standing down on
the touch line, I ask them questions and I tell
them my viewpoint about certain plays, and I try and
(04:13):
give them a coaches perspective. So yeah, I just don't
have any control over that.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
All right, playoffs are here, Brian, Brian Schmetcher with US
Houston coming up. You beat him at home three weeks ago.
Give us a thought on the matchup.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Just Hector Herrera's back. That's a big piece for them.
You know, we controlled a lot of that game. They're
a good possession team, they love keeping possession of the ball,
but they weren't really you know, they weren't really dangerous
with their possession. We obviously had some good chances. We
ended up winning the game one nothing. In Houston, we
drew two two's. It was a good game. They were
(04:48):
up to nothing, we came back to two. It's the playoffs.
It's going to be exciting. They're a decent squad.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Well, in other sports, I mean, namely baseball and basketball
start with shorter series and then you go to longer series,
and you guys do the opposite. You start with a
series and then go to a single game knockout. So
do you like that? And why do you think soccer
does that?
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Well?
Speaker 3 (05:11):
I think it was because with the Apple TV contract,
they needed to make sure they had X amount of games.
They also wanted to make sure because look, the higher seed,
you know, gains an advantage playing if it has to
go to you know, the third game. There's two games
at home, so they're trying to ensure that the home
seed makes it through. Sometimes playoffs teams get hot, you know,
(05:34):
they they might go on a streak in the playoffs.
They wanted the top seed to have a better chance.
So that's the reasoning behind it, and I kind of
agree do.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
You have an Apple TV password for the MLS package?
By the way, at.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Home, I'll chext it to you as soon as you
get off the phone.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Thank you. With with Vargas out for Monday's first playoff game,
let's talk about how we're going to make up for
him being out as JP slide back in there after
coming back in.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
I think Joe, Paul, and Danny Lava are currently fighting
for that last spot. Danny's, you know, had a really
really good month and a half of training, very similar
to what I see in Paul roth Rock. The kid
wants it. He wants it bad. JP is the senior player.
He's not ninety minutes fit yet. But you know, between
(06:21):
those two, we'll we'll fill that position and we'll put
a good squad out there.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Coach Jackson was whining about how Houston beat LA on Saturday,
meaning if you get by Houston, you get LAFC. I
just think because Jackson's scared of LAFC. I know you're
not scared of LAFC, but you know, what do you
what do you think about that that daunting task potentially
if you get by Houston.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Yeah, LAFC. At some point we're going to beat him,
so why not make it this year?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Certainly last year was kind of a you know, sud
because we had home field advantage. But maybe that plays
in our favor.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Maybe our guys.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Play a little looser. We certainly like to play in transition,
defend a little. So let's get past Houston and then
we'll we'll take on l S. No problem.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
I was gonna say, I was actually surprised you even
entertained that question. To be honest with you, I mean,
why don't we just talking about who you want to
face in the MLS Cup right now? Huh?
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Miami and there you go?
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Done? How about Miami without messy? That sounds good to me?
All right, coach, great stuff, best of luck and text
that password. Enjoy your turkey meat balls and we're talking
a week. Thanks, all right, Brian Schmetzer with us on
the radio show. And don't forget to check the Twitter
accounts at the kjar uh to guess whose foot belongs
to who? In honor of Rex Ryan's admitted foot fetish,
(07:37):
which we talked about again today because he talked about
it on a podcast. So look, I know this is
like a decade old story, but he brought it up again.
Finally he said, yes, I like feet. What do you
want from me? So we have a contest going on.
We each took a sock off, put our foot on Twitter.
Once you're done vomiting. I mean you literally can like
smell the sweat through the picture. It's that nasty jump
(08:00):
on Twitter. Plug your nose. Guess whose foot belongs to who?
And somebody's gonna win a free pair of Brooks Roaring shoes,
or my wife will get pissed at me and make
me buy them on the website, which is entirely possible.
