Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now back to Sophie and Dick on your home for
the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl fifty nine. Sports Radio
ninety three point three KJRFL you tuxdown.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Alright, boys and girls, we are back here at the
Emerald Quin Casino Sportsbook, hanging out until seven o'clock tonight.
We got Ohio State and Notre Dame, got NBA, got
the NHL. Back in studio tomorrow at three with the
Hall of Fame announcement. Eachi Row Is he going to
be a first ballot Hall of Famer? I would think so.
The only question is really be unanimous or not. We'll
find out around three o'clock tomorrow. But I'll tell you what,

(00:31):
that's of no concern to people in Kansas City because
they are getting ready to do something on Sunday that
I'm assuming growing up as a kid and even when
he got into this crazy business decades ago, Saren Petro
of WHB never thought possible, and that as a seventh
consecutive trip to the AFC Championship Game, Saren, if I
would have told you fifteen twenty years ago that your

(00:53):
beloved Kansas City Chiefs would be in the conference title
game seven years in a row. You would have said,
what back to me.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
You're on crack down the pipe? What are you thinking there? Yeah,
absolutely not. I mean you're talking about a franchise. They
name the trophy for winning the AFC Championship Game the
Lamar Hunt Trophy, and for a long long time I said, look,
forget about winning a Super Bowl. This team just needs
to get the Lamar Hunt Trophy. They named the trophy
after their owner, the founder of the AFL, and they've

(01:23):
never even possessed that trophy. Forget about Vince Lombardi. Let's
take it, baby steps. Let's win the Lamar Hunt Trophy
once first. Now to have played for its seven consecutive
years is amazing.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, and look, it's incredible how close this team is
to actually making the Super Bowl seven consecutive years in
a row. You think about that six point loss to Brady,
You think about the three point loss to the Bengals, obviously,
but this run that you're on right now, it feels
different because you've got fifteen wins, which is the most
enfranchise history. But you're struggling to close every game out.

(01:55):
But that's the talent, right to find a way to
win when you're maybe not at your best is a talent.
So how did this particular version of Chief Football pull
it off compared to all those other teams that Andy
Reid and Patrick Mahomes have been a part of.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Yeah, it is one of the more impressive runs, I
think because of the things they've been up against, because
you know, health wise, I mean injury wise. They lost
Roschie Rice early Hollywood Brown they lost in the first
preseason game, didn't get him back until the last few
games of the year. They missed the first I think
ten or twelve games with Charles Jamene who who blew
out his you know, knee, and the NFCJ or AFC

(02:31):
championship game last year. So they've had key pieces. They've
been out. Jalen Watson went down about week five or six,
as they have Pacheco went down around week three or four.
They've lost a lot of guys and they kept winning
and I think, you know, just being down on talent
was one of the reasons why they were winning all
those games so closely. And now as they've come down
the stretch, you know, they beat Cleveland whatever that's worth,
by two touchdowns. They handled business against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

(02:55):
Against the Houston Texans. They won by eight against the
Texans and Kareem Hunts down at about the five yard
line to brun out the clock instead of punching in
a touchdown that would have made it fifteen. It was
fourteen over the Steelers, and then this one I think
ends up being what was it nine when it's all
said and done, It was eleven before they took the
safety at the end. So they have been having their
most impressive wins here of lane, and I think it's

(03:18):
because they're starting to get some of those players back.
Everyone butt Raschi, Rice that I mentioned is now back
for the Chiefs, and I think that makes them a
tougher receiving core to handle. It makes them a much
tougher defensive line to handle, just because everybody. They now
have depth of guys that can come after the quarterback.
And I think that was one of the things that
really showed against the Texans. Eight sacks on CJ. Stroud,
And they had really been down from their sack tour

(03:40):
where they were number two in the NFL last year.
Over the last five or six games, they're getting back
to looking like the team that really harassed the quarterback
last year.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Well, Sir and Petro with us WHB Chiefs Bengals, the
Chiefs Bill Sorry Sunday three point thirty and the AFC
Championship with Kerry both those games of course right here
on ninety three three KJRFM. And look, man, I remember
just watching the Raid. The crowd sizes for the Patriot
parades as they you know, picked up four, five, six championships,
and they would get smaller and smaller and smaller. Honestly,

(04:10):
is this getting kind of, for lack of a better word, boring.
Are people still as enthusiastic? Are they still as adamant
and fired up and drooling at the mouth just like
they were for number one back in twenty nineteen.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
I think they are. I mean, one of the things
that the Patriots had going was the Celtics were good
for part of that stretch. You know, the Bruins were
winning things, the Red Sox were winning things. The Royals
finally got good again last year and got back into
the playoffs for the first time since twenty fifteen. So
you know, there hasn't been as much competition for sports
fans here in Kansas City from the professional standpoint, But

(04:45):
I mean there is an element like, listen, you know
you're spoiled. There's no doubt if you eat pizza every day,
you're gonna love pizza. But you're not gonna get fired
up the way you did when you only had it,
you know, once a month. I mean it just it
is a different mindset. It's an entitled mindset. It's a
spoiled mind mindset. People begin to complain about things that
are absolutely ridiculous, and you know, that's where the fan
base is right now. They can afford to do it

(05:07):
because the team keeps giving them more and more to enjoy.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
When you hear people complain about all the calls that
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs get. Does that bother you?
Is a bother chief fans?

Speaker 3 (05:18):
I bother Chiefs fans a lot? It shouldn't. I mean
it was one of the AP writers put it out
there that the Chiefs have actually been penalized for two
hundred more yards since Patrick Mahomes has been the starting
quarterback for two hundred more yards than their opposition in
the playoffs and that you know, I saw that out
on Twitter and there were responses like but yeah, but
it's when the calls come like okay, like You're never

(05:39):
gonna make everybody happy on that kind of thing. Chiefs fans,
we told them a long time ago. Look, everybody loves
you here in twenty eighteen because Patrick Mahomes ain't Tom Brady.
He's new, you're fresh. But if you start winning championships,
they're gonna view you the same way they view the
New England Patriots. And what you got to do is
embrace wearing the black hat, roll into town, drink their whiskey,
take their women, and enjoy the vic enjoy the victories

(06:02):
because it's no one's going to be on your side anymore.
And I think you know because it's coming right after
the Patriots, and they remember how much they hated the
Patriots and felt the same way that you know, the
Patriots got all the calls. That they understand it a
little better than maybe some other fan bases would, but no,
it's still upset them.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Well, let's say, by all accounts, a toss up man
on Sunday right with Buffalo. I mean, the Chiefs are
not even getting the obligatory three, you know, and make
me nervous. A little bit of fire for you. The
Kansas City's perfect at home knock on Wood. Buffalo obviously
is on a freaking mission. They have been for you
know what thirty five years now, ever since losing four
in a row. What's your anxiety level like for Sunday's game, Man,

(06:43):
you know it's.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Not high because one, if they don't win, I mean,
for God's sake, like I said, we've been spoiled. Like
you know, I can't complain if they if they would
lose in the conference championship game. But you know, my
feeling is the better team is home. I think Baltimore
was the better team. They turned it over three times
and had a chance to tie it late. I think
Baltimore is a team that I would say can play
lower than the Bills can play, but can also play higher.

(07:07):
And so I actually feared the Ravens more than I
feared the Bills. I think the Bills are a great story.
Josh Allen is tough, but when they played Josh Allen,
they hadn't had Charles the mine who back, and they
had zero sacks on Josh Allen. They're gonna be able
to pressure him a lot better this time. I think
that makes him much more equipped on defense. Gal and
Watson didn't play in that game. He came back in
this last game, so their defensive backfield gets deeper. So

(07:29):
this is the best version of the Chiefs. I am concerned.
I thought the passing game looked poor. They've done a
nice job of trying to solidify the offensive line with
Joe Toney left tackle, and he is their best option
in pass blocking. But they really don't run the ball
well anymore. So they're getting kind of one dimensional. And
so look, it's not perfect, but no one's perfect. When
you have that big contract for the quarterback, you're going

(07:51):
to have to minimize your weaknesses, maximize your strengths. They
found a way to do it against Houston. They need
to find a way to do it against Buffalo. I
think the spread's probably right. I mean Patrick Wall one
and four against Josh Allen the regular season and three
and zero in the postseason. You know, he seems to
always play his best. He's one of a handful of
quarterbacks whose passer rating goes up in the postseason, as
TDed i int goes way up in the postseason. He

(08:12):
just seems to always rise to the occasion.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Surn great stuff man enjoy it while it lasts, because
at some point this run is gonna come to an
end when I got no frickin idea, But it's gonna
come to an end at some point, man, So soak
it up, have fun Sunday, and we'll talk down the road. Buddy,
appreciate it, man, Sophie, you the man.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Thanks for having me, brother, you.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
