Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the exclusive home of the Huskies, the
Kraken and March Madness. Now back to Softie and Dick,
proudly brought to you by Emerald quin Casino on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
All right, we're back here, day one of Husky football
spring practice. Here from Jed Fish in the six pm hour,
but joining us right now on the radio show, we
talk about the other football in town, Sounders FC, their
head coach joining us every Tuesday at this time, our
friend Brian schmittzer coach. How are you.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
I'm good, I'm sorry I missed you know, I caught
the last five minutes of your previous conversation. Sound pretty
pretty interesting.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, So Dick is mad that Hore Polanco is the
fraternity lot Forcott says you should plan having a baby better.
He's not mad at Polanco per se, but just the
general idea. He thinks you should plan having a baby
better not to miss any playing time. So the question
is this Albert Russnack, for example, come to you the
day before the MLS Cup and says, coach, I can't
play my wife just had a baby. What would you say?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Check your text message first.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
But no, no, isn't you better get your ass on
the pitch, right? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I mean it's what it's an MLS Cup. I mean
it's you know, it's hard. It's different if it's the MLS. Look,
if it's a World Series, I'm sure the baseball players
would you know, a Game seven of the World Series.
I think it's different. But I don't know if you
can really plan that deck. I mean, I mean stuff happens, So,
I mean, babies happened. I don't know. I didn't plan
(01:36):
any of my three.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
So yeah, well, I know you're right, stuff happens. But
you know you can also you can also go to
the hospital and then get to the game too. You
know what I'm saying. You watch the you watch the birth,
and you you kiss her goodbye, and you go to
the go to the game and play. I mean, there's
nothing wrong with that, but.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
The umbilical cord, you're out.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
I don't have as much problem with having a baby
during the time and you're playing the games as much
as like taking a being on paternity leave. When you're
a professional athlete, you're.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Getting millions of dollars do you have do you have
a team rule on that. Honestly, is there like is
there like a like a club policy on on on
all that?
Speaker 5 (02:14):
Brian, No, but there Look they I have let some
of my players be there at the birth of their children,
their child, but then they come back to training the
next day.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
There you go, oh, all right, yeah, go ahead. You
guys are just cold man, unbelievable. All right, well, Brian
Schmeetzer's with us. So you've often said a draws like
kissing your sister. But did the match with San Jose
feel a little bit better? More about getting a great
goal so late in the game versus kissing your sister.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
What do you think, Yeah, maybe kissing your cousin.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
I don't know some states that's allowed, by the way,
some states that's encouraged.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Was it was a seriously, it was better. It was
a little better. Look, Albert scored a great goal. We
should have had two or three more. Our expected goals
was like over two point something, had twenty six shots,
sixty percent of the ball, sixty percent possession. So we
(03:18):
felt a little done in there with that game. And
you know it was our fall for getting up the
goal in the first half, which we should have prevented.
But you know, we should have won that game.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
So what was a halftime speech like, because you obviously
played better soccer in the second half than in the
first half.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Well, I might have said a few choice words. I
know I was firm still early in the year, but
there might have been a you know, a beeper two
in there. It was. It was basically the team knew
they hadn't played well. I made a tactical switch, you know,
I changed Masoski for Jou Paulo. Joe Paula wasn't bad,
(03:56):
but we just needed someone up front or running behind,
and I think he did a good job there. But
the whole team just kind of switched on and said, hey,
you know what, this isn't good enough.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Well, last week, Brian, you kind of confirmed without confirming
the Ryan Kent news, and now it's official. So let's
talk about him and what this kid brings to your offense.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Well, we saw him at We saw him at training
today for the first time out on the grass, and
he looks pretty darned good. We've got another session planned
for him tomorrow, a little bit bigger, eleven to eleven.
Let's see what he has there. But he looks good.
He looks really sharp, and in front of goal, he's
pretty clinical.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
So talk about his stamina and is there any visa issues?
What is the timeline before we see him on the
pitch in the game.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Well, that's just it. It's both of those things, Dick.
It's a great question. So we're going to bring him
along because he hasn't played in five months, and I
certainly don't want to put him out there if he's
not ready. So we've got at least seven to ten
days before we get the visa thing figured out, right,
So that's you know, that's six training sessions and then
(05:05):
and then let's see and look, I'll dip my toe
of water. We'll get him a cameo appearance first, and
he's actually got to perform too before he gets the start,
So we'll get him out there as soon as he's
a fleet ready to play. I guess I would say, yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Well, there's been some critics of the move though, now,
I mean Jackson's been one of them. He's been ripping
this move up and down the radio for the last
couple of days. I mean, how would you respond to
critics who say he was not with a team, has
not played since last summer, and he's seen a few
recent injuries.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
They don't know.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Jack, Yeah, yeah, Jack good and not one of the critics.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Then okay, wow, okay, so they're wrong, they're wrong.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Hey, just looks highlight look highlight reels you can find
on YouTube. You know, some of those are exaggerated. It's
only the very very best of the best. But I
actually did a lot of research, The coaches did a
lot of research. The kid's good, he's going to help us.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
How about an injury update. Jordan and Pedro getting closer.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Pedro is kind of maybe fifty to fifty for the
weekend and then if not, then the following game in Dallas.
Jordan could be there for that Dallas game too, but
again I want to be prudent there with Jordan. So
they're getting closer.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Okay, San Diego this week going down there, newest team
in the MLS. What do you make of these guys
so far? What you do you see them?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah? Not bad for an expansion team. I mean they
they've come out and got some good wins. They beat
the Galaxy, they beat the Crossdown Rivals at LAFCUH so
not bad. I mean the rookie coach mikey Varis has
done a good job. They've got some decent players, but
there's still an expansion team, and we've got enough firepower.
(06:58):
I think we can give him a good game. I
like the tactics that we're using setting up, so should
be an interesting game.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Well, they've given up some goals too, so this might
be you think this might be a game where the
offense can get in tracked a little bit.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Well, based on the last forty five minutes that I
watched our team, I think we'll be able to score
some goals on them.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Okay, gotcha? All right, Well we've learned a lot today,
especially your thoughts on having a kid. If you play
for the Sounders, you want to have a kid, have
a kid, but you ain't missing Jack squat if you
play from my club man, ruthless, dude, just ruthless. All right, Brian,
you're the best. Good luck man. We're talking a week.
Thanks Ran.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Okay, all right, take care, guys, see you all right.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Brian Schmetzer with us on the radio show. We're gonna
hear from Jed Fish in the six pm hour. We're
live at you up for day one of Husky football
spring practice right here on ninety three to three KJRFM.
