Speaker 2 (00:13):
Is it funny that you drop that in there?
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:15):
It's time again.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Okay, Today, as you heard in the show on three
things to note today, and you probably have seen in
your feed your social media feeds, today's National Dog Day.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
And I want to because every day is a national day.
I have keeping up now.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Of course, some of them are not worth mentioning some
are you.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Mean National Cat Day? Huh? You don't want to mention that.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I like cats.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
You know that we would have cats except our youngest,
Phoebe's allergic.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Be so grateful, would we?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (00:47):
I like cats. They're good to have around.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
I mean, they're okay when you had them. I love them,
and you know that they're hated them.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
We've almost broke up over one of my cats. You
know that's true.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
I didn't hate them, my cat black and.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Black and white. I didn't name him, by the way.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
That was an ex who named him, and it just
fuck because guess what, he was black.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
And white, just like Mama cat was a mama cat.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, Murphy was so mad at black and white one
night that he was so mad and he was calling
him names and chasing him around.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
And remember that you were so mad at him.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
I was like, I don't think I want to be
around this angry, angry at my cat person.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Well, I'd never had cats prior to that.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, and they don't do what you want.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
No, I didn't, So it was really it was a
matter of me. He had me fooled, you know, because
he was really in charge. Once I adapted to that,
I was fine, No, it's you're correct. I would you know,
I would prefer dogs to cats.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
I know, and that's okay, but.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
That's just me. I don't like litter boxes. They're nasty,
they smell. You wanted me to make a list, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
I don't want you to make a list.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
We don't have cats of Phoebe and.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Because of you, because I wouldn't do that. So you
wouldn't force that on you.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
I know you wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Can you imagine me being with someone who's allergic to dogs?
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Man, my life would be different. I wouldn't have dogs.
We wouldn't be doing this podcast right now.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Anyway, it's National Dog Day and you'll see it in
your feet all day, and I just wanted to talk
about it because.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
There's a story. I don't know if you even know this.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
Murphy, one of my first experiences with a dog really
being important to you. You know, if you are a
dog person, you'll have ten dogs in your lifetime, but
some of them sort of rise to the top, you know,
some of them are the best, and some of them
are your favorites, like Champ is my favorite dog I've
ever owned. Well, when I was in fourth grade, I
(02:53):
had a really difficult year at school, horrible experiences.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
I was sad all the time.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
That's a tough time anyway, you know.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
I well, I just was having a I didn't I
think my friend group was completely fractured, and I just
was lonely. I was having a lonely time. And there
was not a you know what's funny, get her a dog. No,
that's not the story. I wish that was the story. Also,
during this time, my dad bought a hunting dog. Oh
(03:27):
her name was Susie, And there was also a lot
of turmoil at the house about Susie because she was
expensive and my dad bought her without talking to my mother.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
She was an expensive purchase, not to like health or anything.
Oh no, no, no, he.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Bought her because she was the best. Was it rapids
or squirrels or something like that?
Speaker 1 (03:51):
What kind of dog?
Speaker 2 (03:52):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
When I was a little girl, I wasn't identifying breeds.
She was just she was he fur was black, she
was green, She smelled bad, creasy. Yeah, she was sort
of you know, you touch a doll, you pet a dog.
Some of them are perfect, like champsy. I don't know why.
She was naturally oily. Some people have naturally only skin. Yeah,
(04:13):
some people have naturally dry skin.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
She was sort of oily, greasy dog. Yeah, but I.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Remember, I know exactly how much she paid for her
in the eighties because she became the four hundred dollars
hunting dog. That night.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
We heard that repeatedly. So your mom didn't use the
name Susie a lot.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
No, I would break out an inflation calculator to see.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
What that actually guess what that was his hobby? Yeah,
he loved to hunt.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Sure, he was also the breadwinner, so you know me,
I was always a daddy's girl. I was kind of
like on dad's side here, not really, I shut up,
I closed my door and I would just not even listen.
But you couldn't help but hear some of these discussions
about Susie the four hundred, but.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
I never really heard much about Susie. You and I've
been married.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
For twenty times, saying you don't know this story.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
So did Susie not hang around very long? What happened?
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I don't I don't know what happened. I mean, she
didn't live forever.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Well, but did y'all keep her for her entire life?
Speaker 2 (05:14):
I think so? Okay?
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Or did she just disappear?
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Well?
Speaker 2 (05:17):
No, no, no, listen.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
My dad kept her for many seasons, hunting seasons because
she was fantastic. That's all I ever heard, you know,
and he loved her. But you understand, we live in
the country. It's not like it is now with our
dogs who have beds inside and they get treats at night.
(05:40):
Susie stayed on the car port. Oh, even considering what
she cost, she stayed.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
On the car pet.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
That's why she was greasy, Yeah, rolling in that oil spot.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Any listen, I was. Take it back to fourth grade.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
I was having a rough time in my life and
I was a little girl in the country. So what
did I gravitate to animals? You know, I loved animals,
I always did. And I knew she was out there,
and I remember having the conversation with my dad, Daddy,
please let's bring her in, or can I put a
blanket out? You can do what you want, but she
needs to stay there. So I would bring blankets out
to her and whatnot and pat her, even though she
(06:17):
was stinking greasy, and I would sit out there with her,
and she became she mattered to me. She was I mean,
she sort of became my friend at a difficult time.
Things improved from me at fifth grade. And I didn't
leave her in the dust. I'm not saying that, but
I just remember her being That was the first time
(06:38):
that I recall a dog sort of being the best friend,
as they say, you know, man's best friend.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
That was the first time I recalled. And it's a
sad story. I know.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
I can't remember when your best friend left, do you.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
I don't remember exactly. She didn't meet some awful end.
I mean, she may have just passed away and my
dad very her in the yard as we did in
the country. I don't remember end. I just remember probably friendship.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
You were in your teen years, probably by the time
she passed, so you were off doing other other things.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
But you know what party.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
And I'm sure you know Susie thinks.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
We have a dog, so we all have that first
experience with a dog being a friend, being more than
you thought it could be.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
I think that's sweet. That That's why I mean dogs,
really they are companions. It's the reason that you see
them as support animals too, you know, it's the reason
that you see it recommended that you know, I guess
like an assisted living centers or whatever, and you know
they'll have a pet day and that kind of thing
where the elderly can.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Bring a lot of happiness, brings a lot of happiness.
And so I mean, yes, do I do I currently do?
We currently have my favorite dog of my life, Champ. Yes,
I don't imagine. And we've always said this and I
always will. It's not okay to have a favorite child.
It is okay to have a favorite pet. Champ is
my favorite pet ever. But I will one day when
(08:01):
he's no longer here. I will rescue again. I will
always have dogs. Yeah, and that all started with Susie
for me.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
The sam Just so you know, I don't know if
you know this. So our daughters Taylor and Phoebe actually
ranked our dogs.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Oh and so we've had a lot too. Yeah, and
Champ actually is number one, you know, for them too.
And now the ratings were based on a number of
different things, you know, behavior, loyalty and ease of you know,
all of those kind of things. It was a points system.
But number two is actually to me close to my
(08:40):
favorite dog too. It's like a tie. Was Ashley, our
second boxer because she was a soul mama. She's very soulverished.
She never had her own litter, so it was a
mama dog totally was a mama dog. Yeah, and I
miss her. She lived to be almost fourteen years old,
which is insane boxer years. Boxers don't live that.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Even told us that he's like, I've never seen an
older boxer.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Yeah, but she okay, yes, I had she had a
good life. Chevy was in the top five. He was
our first, but he licked a little too.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Much, also ate soap and then would throw it off.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
So you know, we had had some complications. There are a
few points taken off for that.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, points taken anyway, National Dog Day. It's a good
day to be good to a dog. Missed any part
of the show. Get it all on the Murphy, Salmon
Jody podcast.
