Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy, Sam and Jony Podcast After the
Show podcast on All Hallows Eve. That's what Halloween is, right, listen.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
To you all form all over there, Murph. Okay, a
special Halloween after the Show podcast.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
We were doing that.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
I know I have a thank you for Sam and
a surprise for you. Murph. Who wants to go first?
Let's go Sam?

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, we were talking after one of our three Things
to Know today in the show about Spirit Halloween stores,
and it's such a great business story. The fact that
they I promise I'll get to the thank you, but
the fact that they built this empire that they have.
It's a it was a gamble to do yearly pop
up stores. That's it's a model. They only they're only

(00:45):
operating September October and then they go away rightly, So
it's called Spirit Halloween. Although we're hearing they're going to
do Spirit Christmas this year. But it was a gamble.
But it was also perfect time and place. Such a
cool story because in a world where we have so
many retail spaces that are empty, like the one that

(01:07):
you hit. Sam's, it used to be a forever twenty one,
so this is huge retail space that no one's using,
in fact, because online shopping is taken over the world.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
When I bought the things that I bought there, they
put them in a forever twenty one bag. I said,
why did you get these? She said, we found them
in the back.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah. Well they still manage. They're not permanent locations. It
was Barret Halloween, but they have fifteen hundred stores across
the country for the season year. Yes, and they might
be crazy, you know, the rest of the year they're
I guess, stocking, restocking, making plans, maybe scoping out other

(01:45):
retail spaces they'd like to take over because they made
they rake in about one billion a year. It's just
a crazy business story and that always sparks my attention
when somebody does something different and you gamble on it.
How many businesses? How many people in business have gambled
and lost ten times before they make it?

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Most have actually correct, you know, most most big successes
come out of a lot of failures.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
First, I just thought it was a cool story. And
after we did it, you know, in the show on
Three Things to Know, Sam was this is the thank you.
Sam was like, don't they don't they put everything on
sale the next day, and I'm like, uh so tomorrow, Oh,
I'm going to try to find one.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah, they don't want to have to load it all
up and bring it back to my spirit factory.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Murph, you have to let me know. Do you really
want a big skeleton for the front yard for next year?

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Do they sell those there?

Speaker 2 (02:34):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
I've only seen costumes and all the other things.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
You know, they sell everything. Decors, they're they're changing.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
They have fog machines. They do have a couple of
characters I saw in there, like the movie.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Gary ones that you like motion activating. I don't like those,
but anyway, I.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Mean, oh, look only if it's stuff that you think
we're going to use. But again, decorations, I trust you
on that. I don't go there.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
We just have a couple of witches out front.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
You know, I never really thought about it. What an
incredible business model that is. And that's also where successful
businesses come from. It's it's become more difficult to do though,
because everybody does have a specialty. But when you create
something new that's different, you know that actually fills avoid
those are typically the most successful businesses.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
I also think they have something going for them here here.
That's one of those marketing oh wows if you will.
And I remember studying this in marketing, which is my
favorite class in college, is that they have the It's
kind of like the McRib thing. You know, it's a
limited time the limited time thing creates buyer anxiousness. It's like, oh,

(03:40):
but Spirit Halloween's only going to be there, you know,
until the end of October, so we should go just
to see it. You know. It creates a sense of urgency, correct,
just like mccrib Halloween.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
I mean, because we have the local party stores that
are here year.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Round and I love supporting those.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
A lot of them has Halloween sections. Are they flipped
to a heavy Halloween right now? But going to Spirit
is like going to a bass pro for the first time.
You walk in and it's like, oh my god, this
is awesome.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Well, you know, it's funny I went to I didn't
go this season. I thrifted my whole costume. We'll get
to that later when we do our Facebook Live Halloween party.
I thrifted every bit of it. But so I didn't
go to Spirit Halloween. But the times that I have
in the past, I was on a mission. I wasn't
doing the Oh wow, I was on a mission for
one specific thing, you know, and I guess I just

(04:30):
looked past all that. But I do think I'll try
to hit it up tomorrow for the sale, because I
don't know, I'm just wired that way. Yeah, just in
case there's something I would want, just in case. And
I'm excited about Spirit Christmas to see what it's like.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
And the thing is, in addition to all the costumes
and the stuff, they have so many props. Okay, you
could load up on props tomorrow, you know, axes and glasses.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
And okay, wigs, and you're the one that likes props. Sam, Yeah,
you know you need to go anyway. So that's the
thank you. As for that reminder, you know, I'm all
about the good discounted Christmas wrapping paper on the twenty
sixth of December, So now I need to get this
in my game at November first game. And that's also everywhere.
That's also the local you know, party stores and even Walmart, Target, whatever,

(05:17):
So thank you for that. All right, moving on to
the surprise for Murphy. For you, it is Halloween. We
have our Halloween Facebook Live you know, in a little bit,
and I'm excited about that. But I'm excited about tonight
at the house. So if you missed it on the show,
we only mentioned at a time or two our daughters, Taylor

(05:38):
and Phoebe have asked if they could host a Halloween
party for their friends at our house tonight. And you know,
it's like, you know, Taylor, I have to work the
next morning. It's super early. Murphy too, you know how
busy he is, said, but yes, we have a space
out enough house where you know, you and I can
retire to our bedroom. There's a TV in there. I
was thinking about making us a little shortcuterie board, you know,

(06:01):
make it a date night with some blood sausage, star
booteray board. They call it for Halloween.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Oh that's cute.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, And I was thinking about, you know, let's watch movies.
We'll have a little date night at home while they
have their Halloween party, which is the other end of
the house is the family room, and they've already started decorating.
Oh good, the spiderwebs up in there and big spiders
and they're doing a they're doing karaoke, they're tailor's making
Halloween cupcakes today there's all kinds of stuff. But the

(06:29):
surprise for you is this. I'll never keep them back
there with just a sarcutery board. Here's why all of
her friends are bringing food too. That's the thing. Come
to my party. We'll host the party, but bring something.
Her boyfriend Alan Michael is supplying pizza forevery there.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
You go, right there.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yeah, shout out to Alan Michael for that. It's so sweet.
I also gave them the heads up about Sonic. I'm like,
if you also want some affordable, you know, party food,
corn dogs are fifty cents. When I said that, their
eyes went what They don't remember that I used to
take them the Sonic on the way to trick or treat.
But anyway, the surprise is that, you know, she has
a lot of really cool friends. We love them all.

(07:09):
One of them, Jamie works as a chef at where
you know that that place where they work on the weekends,
the catering place. Jamie, because he's a chef, he makes
stuff all the time. He creates all the time, and
Taylor says he throws it in the freezer. He's bringing
food that he created. I've been told hellepenio poppers, Oh wow,

(07:31):
anything else that might surprise us. And remember everything we've
ever tasted from Jamie unbelievable, exceptional. That stuff is going
to be at our house tonight.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
And I said, we wouldn't be at you know, we
wouldn't get in their way. But I know you're going
to be up in.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
It at the microwave apparently for the air friar.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
You know, they always need adult supervision to set up, right.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
A, don't they're young adults.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Well, that'll be fun, It will be fun.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
It's exciting. I just thought i'd tell you that. Yeah,
I was chef food in the house.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
I forget about the perks of them working, you know,
at a catering place, because they will bring things home,
you know, from every week, which is different. Yeah, it
depends on what the wedding planners did you know. It's
a variety of food.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
On Sunday morning when they're staying the night with us,
the kids, I open the I'm the first one up.
I open the refrigerator and literally it literally will say,
you know, crab and breeze soup, Oh cool, you know,
and then bread pudding. It's like, oh, and it's a
lot of it's what's left over it's like, take this
home to your families because it didn't get eaten. It

(08:31):
happens almost every weekend and they work weddings.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
Bread pudding, that's great for breakfast.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Yeah, you're right, Well, I'm impressed with their prep. It
was really cool you now. Of course I had the
bug spray in my hand this morning and before I realized, oh,
that's a fake fighter right there.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
But yeah, if they're gonna have a good time, they're
gonna do karaoke.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
You know.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Figure you and I can go to bed early with
our little carcuitary boards. Maybe they'll they'll probably let us
have whatever we want, so we don't even have to
do I don't have to do a board. We can
eat party food and take it back to the room.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Don't need to be prepared for trick or treaters, just
in case, I know we don't ever get them. But
isn't that a good just in case I would feel horrible?
You know if if the one time we get, you know,
a few kids show up.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
I'll buy one bag of Hanvin one bag of candy.
And Taylor has bought a bag of candy for her
friends for the party. She asked if she could use
our big ceramic pumpkin, and I said absolutely. I have
a big ceramic jack O Lander with the big wide
open mouth. I got it at Pottery Barn years ago
and it's fantastic. You just shove the candy. Yeah, it
looks like it's throwing up all the candy. Let the

(09:37):
candy come out of it. So she asked if she
could use that. I'm like sure.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Oh, I didn't know it was supposed to be looking
like it's throwing up.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
I thought it was just like a, well it can.
It can if you get if you do it right, is.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
That the intention?

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Yeah, it's cool.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Oh okay, I didn't know that. I really didn't know.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Why he doesn't plan the party. I used to look
this messy. Yeah, Happy Halloween. Thank you? Anna missed any
part of the show. Get it All on the Murphy
