Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to part two of today's Murphy, Sam and Jody
Daily Show podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
If you struggle with small talk at work talk you know,
in professional situations, you are not alone. Apparently something like
seventy five percent of people do struggle with this.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah, don't say that.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Don't ask that question. Although sometimes the weather is worthy
of discussion.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Oh yeah, And I think it's the most common thing.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
And I understand that it's something you have in common.
Do you not, Yeah, but I wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Hey, do you do something new with your hair?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Okay, I hope you don't sound like that when you
make small talks. Out of all of us, I think Sam,
you would be the one that struggles with small talk.
Murphy does not struggle with it. He struggles not doing
it right.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
So I'm definitely a small talk problem person.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Really see, I think in recent years that's changed. You
don't think how I see you talking to people in
the elevator, and I mean I see you you know yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
All the time.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
It makes me sad, actually, because there are real benefits
for you professionally personally at work, for the whole office
is productivity for you to be able to engage in conversation.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
I'm bringing the whole office down.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
No, I'm saying I feel bad that you struggle with it,
but you're certainly not alone.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
You know what, you really want to know what they
behind the scenes reason for this is it's anxiety. Yeah,
I'm thinking too much. When you know, if a stranger comes, hey, Sam,
about I'm like, think, think, think, you better have a
good answer.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah, where is the pressure coming from? This is a
stranger me? Oh well?
Speaker 1 (01:46):
A lot of times they say the easiest way to
handle it is to ask questions instead of saying things.
Ask questions, right, and that starts the dialogue.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
People like to talk about. This is the did you
just with your hair? That's where that came from?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Right and how abouts?
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Okay. Yeah, it's sad to me because they say, those
who say they struggle with small talk, yeah, it's almost
as hard as learning a new language to try to
get better at it. So they don't normally try. You
don't normally try.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
No, I don't know when I have to. That's when
you practice, and then it's it's then you're like it's over. Yeah,
thank goodness.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Okay, So look, in a little while, we'll give you
some ideas of how to do it to practice, how
to start, what to say? Besides, how about this weather
happen right?
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Coming up next, Jody has three things to Know Today.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Three things to Know Today brought to you by good RX.
Number one, some good news finally coming out of the
LA area regarding the wildfires. They're expecting a much needed
break from fire weather later this week, cooler temperatures and
the winds not being so powerful.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
I heard they got eaten fire like forty five.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Percent correct, And the La County Health Officer has issued
in order prohibiting the cleanup and removal of fire debris
from these damaged and burned properties. They had people kind
of going in there with leaf blowers and like cleaning
things up, and it's like, whoa, there's an inhalation risk.
We need to be careful and has Matt needs to
come in first. So those warnings coming down now.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Number two.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Last night, President Joe Biden did his farewell address to
the nation. He talked about all things going on now,
some warnings about well social media and AI going forward,
but he ended in an uplifting way.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
I love America.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
You love it too. God bless you all, make God
protect your truth.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Thank you for this great honor, and I guess the
next time we will see President Biden will be at
the inauguration on Monday. Correct. And number three Walgreens and
their CEO admitting that locking up the merch to keep
it from being stolen and shoplifted has been bad for
business because regular customers like you and me, we don't
want to wait extra time or you know, perfume or whatever.
(03:59):
So it's something that they're looking at changing somehow, even
though stolen property was like two hundred and forty five
million dollars in lost sales last year. You're up to
day three things to know today. If you want to
get better at small talk, pull up a chair. Number
one is practice, practice, practice. You have to try and
(04:21):
do it and get better at it. You'll see that.
It's if you never talk to anybody for months and
months and then you find yourself in some odd little
social situation. Of course, it's going to be harder than
if you do it often.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
I guess it's kind of like exercising, right, you're a
little sore after, but the muscle gets stronger. It's the
same kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
I guess, So yeah, so practice practice the other thing.
Murphy you were right about getting better at small talk.
It's a good idea to ask questions, you know. That way,
you don't feel so responsible for carrying a conversation. You ask,
but you need to be genuine about the questions you're asking.
And here's the trick. It's it's also the same trick
to storytelling. Storytelling is about being specific. Ask specific questions.
(05:03):
Don't just ask you know, hey, what's going on man?
Or what's this? You know? How's this weather treating you?
Be specific? Where did you get those awesome shoes? You know?
Are you a Star Wars fan? I saw you wearing
a Star Wars shirt? Be specific, and then conversations have
to flow, right they just do?
Speaker 3 (05:23):
I have a question? Where do I practice in.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Social situations at work? You should practice here. We make
lots of small talk together every day, all of us.
We do.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yeah, but I'm comfortable with you guys.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
So you need to work on somebody else. You're going
to have to speak to some other human beings.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Well, it's not really small talking, just conversation among friends
who know each other. Right, that's different.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
But this is happening at workplaces across you know, a country,
like a lot of employees.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Just who don't know each other very well, and.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Their lives are online, oh so much of their Yeah,
career experiences and all these apps and all these workflow
things by these companies and working remotely has made that
harder for you to be in the room standing in
front of another person. But there are real benefits to
getting better at it, so you do need to practice it.
(06:17):
What do you have shared work experiences? If it's work? Oh,
you can talk about work like you know, you just
had to do some training recently. Well you could if
you could talk to anybody out there who also did
the same training. Sam, the online training. Now you need
to keep it positive.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
What do you think about our supervisor?
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Have you noticed Murphy's acting weird lately?
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Coming up, Jody has another Hollywood outsider, And next Sam
is the food Dude.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah, Little Dennie's created a new snack by putting together
two existing snacks.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
If it's new and you can eat it, Sam's found it.
Here's the food Dude.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Brought to you by Low's got all kinds of new
stuff coming to the supermarket. And we're going to kick
it off with little Debbie.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Okay, so much aready?
Speaker 3 (07:03):
He's got something new coming to us. That's then you
know the Nutty Buddy, right.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
I'm aware of it, Yes, I mean, well, of course
I'm joking. Yeah, we ate them grown up.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Okay, nutty body cream pie. Huh, that's the new one.
I said that it's going to be like the oatmeal pie,
consistency with the flavors of the Nutty Buddy. And here
here's in quotes soft peanut butter cookie with a chocolatey
coating and peanut butter cream. So it doesn't sound like
the crunchy wafers are going to be in there.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yeah, I think I'd missed the wafers. But they're not
getting rid of nutty Buddies? Correct, So when they add
a new snack, do they remove an old one? Do
they take one away that we.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
I don't remember Little Debbie ever getting rid of anything either.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I mean I only have so much space on there,
and that's a big section.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Do they still have choco Jels?
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (07:47):
I don't know Chaco jel. No, it sounds something like
you brush your teeth with you No, that was my
mom loved those. Yeah, you called them by the wrong name,
but yeah, they were.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
The would you call them Cagy.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
She called them cocoa jels. It was like the cake
with the little red you know, the jelly center and
then the chocolate chocolate tea coating, you know.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Okay, all right, Nutty Budy pies coming Sargento. The cheese folks,
they now have some new shredded cheeses where they've partnered
up with spices or spicy spice companies like Chilula and
Frank's Red Hot. So you're gonna have cheese that has
Frank's Red Hot or Chilula in it.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Delicious.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Nothing no word yet from Tabasco or any of the others.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
I like that.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
The other day I told you about the new cheese
at Duo Pasto and Mozzarella. Well, they have a new
cheese at Snap now too, Margherita pizza flavor. So we're
gonna have to give that one to try since those
were a little off. Cho Pizza Flavor. Was a couple
of new Sprite flavors Sprite Tropical mixes coming this year.
(08:52):
Nice and also Murphy. You like the Sprite Chill, right, Yeah,
they have a flavored flavored one coming this year, Sprite
Chill Strawberry Key in mid March.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Yeah, it's got a little cool, kind of refreshing after punch.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah, go ahead, ask me the question about them. What's
the question? Oh?
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Are they available in zero?
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Now? Oh?
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Really? Right?
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Ok?
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Sorry about it all right? Coming up next to your
Hollywood Outsider, Jody's Hollywood Outsider.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Brought you by Private Team missed.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Actress Jennifer Garner. I mean, she's just so super likable. Well,
she was already a board member and a longtime ambassador
for Save the Children. Now, yes, like I said, she's
always doing something great, even for her ex Ben Affleck. Okay,
So anyway, these devastating wildfires that have come close to
home for her in California, well, she's this volunteer work
(09:44):
that she does all the time has become more personal,
and she has set up a bunch of pop up
play therapy camps across LA for kids to be kids
again and feel normal right now. Realize that some children
lost their entire well some of them have lost their
homes and their school. So she's working with Save the Children,
and she's doing things like that pop up therapy camps
(10:05):
and places where they can play and feel comfortable and
talk about what they've lost. So Jennifer Garner. We also
have some interesting New York City news. The Sex and
the City Brownstone, the you know apartment that Carrie was
always walking in and out of. It's a famous place,
you know, just like the Breaking Bad House.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Fans visit from Christmas Story.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Fans visit all the time and try to take selfies
in front of it constantly. So the owner wants to
put up a no trespassing sign, you know, and she
was advised to do that from her friends and coworkers,
but she has to get permissions to that. It's in
a historic district of New York. But she is driven
crazy daily by fans follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
(10:52):
We do read and see every single message that you send,
every email. We get them all. And I wanted to
say that I do appreciate eight when I'm corrected. We
say so much stuff here and there's so much information given,
especially in Three Things to Know and Outsiders and All
Hollywood Outsiders and all that that we misspeak sometimes, and
I think I may misspeak the most.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
And quite frankly, we're just not that smart.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Ah No, you made mistakes when you're when words are
your business, what you offer.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Hey, we're human not AI.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Correct, So sounds like something AI would say. So the
other day in Three Things to Know or I'm sorry
in the Hollywood Outsider, we were talking about Patrick Mahomes
and Brittany Mahomes having their third child, a baby girl
that they name Ray Golden Ray, and we talked about
the way that they named their children, and I had
said that, you know, hey, they finally got a girl,
(11:48):
and do you know, two minutes after that, I was
reading It's like, oh wait, they do already have a girl.
So I misspoke, Jenniferson, quick correction. Sterling Mahomes the oldest
child of Patrick and Brittany also a girl, so it's
a girl boy girl. Bronze and Gold, Sterling Bronze and gold. Right,
So their names are names are after medals, and they
(12:11):
also have two dogs named after metals, Steel and silver,
and Brittany explained all of this and social media over
the last I guess several days with all the here's
why we named this. She got a dog in college
named Steel, and then when they got their second dog,
they were gonna name it Sterling, and they were like, wait, wait, wait,
(12:32):
we like that name for a kid. They had no
children yet, so they saved it, named the dog silver,
and saved sterling from when the child was born.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Nobody in the family named aluminum.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Not yet.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
You said that the other day too.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Lord, I gotta work on some new jokes.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Anyway. No, that's just who you are, that's your mind.
But anyway, Jennifer, I don't mind that at all. Thank
you for the correction.
