Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy Salamon Jony. After the show podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Murphy and I are about to go away for the weekend,
Like right after this, we're about to get away for
a couple of days with some friends. Murphy is so
funny when he packs, Sam, you don't realize that you
have this. You're just funny when you pack. You know,
you're very verbal.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Packer.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Was I verbal again when I was packing for this?
Speaker 4 (00:21):
I'm I'm he says what he's packing for. I probably
need this for this.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yes, And sometimes I'm like, I don't even know if
you're talking to me or you're just verbalizing it. Because
that helps you organize. It's very important, especially for someone
like Murphy. You have insulin to consider, You have a
lot of things you need the sensors for the you
know you. It's not just like throwing a bathing suit
and a you know, fingers.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
I wish I could. I wish too, but type one
diabetes ends up being the ball and chain.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
But what so, there's so many things to say here
about it.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
About a year ago is when you discovered packing cubes,
and that's the big I.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Love it well. Jody started that and then our friend
Jeremy here was like going on. He's like, yeah, yeah,
and they are the things.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
They are because I know you don't believe it. Sam,
We're going to give him packing cubes and so he understands.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
So you can't.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
You can condense stuff in it.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
You put all of the let's say you're going on
a three day trip and you're gonna you're gonna pack
six shirts. You put all of the shirt shirts in
one cube, and you can com pack that thing down.
You can't believe it that you can fit six cubes
in a small little square. You can't believe it.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
And I'm just about traveling lighter. You know, it's shouldn't
put a metal block just because you think so, you're
assuming it without trying it. That's a dangerous thing to do.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Well, it's not dangerous.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well it's not. No, it's not dangerous, right, But but
but because Jody's right, what I fit in my suitcase
for this trip unbelievable. It would not have fit, no
matter how tightly I would have rolled it, no matter anything.
It literally it weighs a bunch, but it's condensed everything.
And now I've got two pouches. When we you know,
when we get to where we're going, those two pouches
(01:59):
are out and I'm done. I'm not unpacking a bazillion
different pieces of anything.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Here's what I don't know.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Props to Jody and Jeremy on this.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
I heard you this is going to be for the
day and this will be for dinner that night, and
you were kind of counting down your outfits, which is
a smart way to pack. I always pack too many,
Like we're going for three days, I'm packing for seven days.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
It's ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Let me extra underwear do you bring too?
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Yeah, yeah, that's basically what I do too.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
You know, for a mishap, well, just yeah, does it
need to be do we need to go into why?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Just just your it's assumed there's going to be a
misshapp It's not assumed.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Well, I mean a mishap you got wet and at
a water part exactly.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
That's what I mean, right, exactly. It doesn't have to
be a you're bringing them just in case.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Here's what I want to know. Let's go back to
the packing cubes. Here's what I want to know, Mark,
because I know how I do my cubes. I know
how I do my cubes. How do you do your
cubes one outfit a day or just shirts in a cube,
you know, pants and a cube, like how many? How
do you break it so you can break it up
per day?
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah, my little cube, I'm not going to get that fancy.
That's where I would agree with Sam. It gets complicated
that way. I don't need that. If I'm going to
individually wrap my clothes, ziplock for that. But now the
so my little cube that is enough for It's the
little cube, which I'm going to get it right, and
(03:27):
I'm trying to give you the size first, so you know, right,
it's a little bit bigger than the palm of your hand.
Might be a foot tall. I'm explaining it. It's got
four pairs of socks, and it's got five pairs of
underwear and they're condensed in that one little space. And
it's got two zippers, the one that you close and
then the one that you zip that compresses everything downs.
(03:49):
And so that's that's one, and the other one is
is T shirts and shorts and then my you know,
my collared shirts and all that are going to be different.
They're not in a package.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Okay, got it? Yeah, I sort of did the same
let me go over this again.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
In my small cube, I have what to sleep in,
bras and underwear okay, okay, it's a light little cube.
And then my other normal sized cubes. One of them
is the casual daywear, like we're hitting, you know, a
lot of walking.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
It's gonna be hot, all that casual.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Daywar, you know, shorts and tops and little squirt. I
brought whatever, a T shirt, dress, some extras. And then
my other cube is the nicer stuff that I you know,
for dinners at night. If we do separate dinners at night,
you know, you got to bring that. So I basically
just have three cubes. And I'm also you know, packing
(04:45):
the little travel steamer and things like that. But it's
just funny. Packing with Murphy is always funny. I'm a
silent I think everything through.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
I could go.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
I could pack completely quiet for the whole you know,
night before a trip and you verbally work out everything.
But it's good because we talk about it, you know,
like I don't think we'll go to dinner that night,
but bring something in case.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Yeah, well I talk about those things with you because
I want your advice on it. But am I talking
to myself as I'm packing to.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Really sometimes I feel like I can tell when you're
telling me or when you're just going, okay, you know,
Saturday night blank.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
I can tell.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
Do you when you're figuring out your outfits? Do you
put them together like a shirt with these sports?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Of course?
Speaker 2 (05:27):
I mean I even try them on sometimes just to
make sure it's comfortable. Ye, make sure the shoes are
because I'm trying to not bring as many shoes. I
used to bring a separate bag for shoes. That's ridiculous.
You know.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
The other thing I've figured out.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
I have a couple and you know this, A lot
of women have this jewelry container that you carry for packing.
And the one one I have is a big round
it roll. You can open it up, you can roll
it out. It's kind of big, but it hold bracelets
and necklaces and earrings and all this great stuff.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
And it's awesome.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
But I saw a hack online and it's like such
a brilliant idea. And it's one of the little pill cases,
you know, the little pill cases that you can put
into its own little soft container. Yeah, it has fourteen
little compartments that snap close seven days morning. I guess
(06:23):
is why there's two and then seven days, not a
m PM. So I it's a very small thing, but
I've got ear rings in it, I've got necklaces in it.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
I've got all kinds of stuff.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Well, that's actually smart because it keeps things from tangling
because you're separated.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Exactly.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Wow, that's a cool idea.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
So I've really compacted that. I'm not taking my.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Bigger jewelry travel case because it's a little bit bigger
than I need for on weekend getaway.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
See, mine is actually just holding vitamins. That's what it
does exactly.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Anyway.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
The yeah, the the other thing I'll tell you about
the packing cubes that helps me is it actually does categorize.
It's weird. I mean, I've got my checklist and all
that kind of stuff. But once it's categorized, I can
look back at my suitcase and here my big three.
I know that I'm covered now instead of actually because
by the time you pack a suitcase individually, if you're
(07:17):
gonna check something, you're gonna have to lift the layers
back up, you know what I'm saying. And with this,
with this, you don't you know, have to do it.
We're not trying to sell you on packing cubes, Sam,
But I'm gonna tell you, but it's a what's They
are two things that just blow me away. One of
them is you gain a lot of space back in
your suitcase. You would be surprised at how much space
(07:38):
you gain back because you're compressing your clothes down into something.
And then just the ease of when you you know,
when you get where you're going, they can go in
the drawer like that if you want to, or you
can take them out. But then when you're repacking your
suitcase to go back, you're not having to rethink that
I put this here, I take a picture, blah blah
blahlah blah.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
You know.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
I mean, you're again condensing things back. And it's great
for the dirty clothes.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
You've got a lot of well too for just dirty.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yeah, benefits right, But to me, it's the space part
that's like, Wow, I've got room for two more things now.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
It's ironic to me knowing you, Sam, mister organization. Your
junk drawer probably has categories. But but that you won't.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
I have certain John drawers for certain things.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah, there you go, then there you go.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Then that you wouldn't want it, But it's so funny.
One of my favorite things about using packing cubes is
when you get where you're going. I can't stand living
out of a suitcase, even for two days. I can't
stand it. So I take the cubes and put them
in the drawer, and I put the suitcase in the
closet so I don't have to feel like I'm living
out of a suitcase, and I leave them in the cubes.
(08:43):
And I just pulled the drawer out and I was like,
this is my casual cube. This is my dinner out cube.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Yeah, me too, love me too. It's a lot, it's
a lot easier. And I'm always afraid that I'm going
to forget something when I leave the hotel or an
EIRB and B or something like that. And again, the
packing cube, if you're doing that, you're not likely to
forget it because everything's in that one space. It's not
like I took half my clothes out the other in
the drawer and these are dirty and coming back, everything
(09:08):
you know, gets gets reorganized again. I'm surprised. I'm so
excited about it. And now I own too many of them, actually, Sam,
so you're want to borrow a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
It doesn't.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
Honestly, you know what would make me get packing cubes
is if I needed them in my head. The way
I pack now, it's not a problem to me. It's
not a problem. So there's no reason to look for
a solution. Yeah, there's no reason for me to try
this or do that. It's like what I do works
for me, whether it's rolling up or folding or because
(09:41):
I do different things, right, but it's working for me.
And I haven't hit that point yet where it's like
I got to come up with a better system.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
No, and not. I didn't think I needed a better
system either.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
I didn't neither.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Yeah, it's right, I didn't think I needed a system.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Right, Well, that's what I'm saying. It's you've got to
be opening a new idea, status quo, status quota. That's
what you're doing that you're doing things the way you've
always done them. Until you try something different, you don't know.
And it was Jeremy that really, because he is a traveler.
Our friend Jeremy does train trips and things like that,
and he will do these like two day trips. Sometimes
he does a twenty four hour thing. He doesn't want
(10:17):
to carry a bunch of stuff on him. And so
if you don't use the packing cubes for that, he's
he's going to wind up with another bag, or he's
gonna want you know, and so and and that's I
didn't think about the compression part of it. To me,
it's like, oh, it's just a pouch, but it's not
just a pouch. It's compressing and it's actually you know,
creating more and more space for you. But you know,
(10:37):
look space. If it works for you and you don't
forget things right, that's probably the best best thing for you.
But I wouldn't say just because you've always done something
the same way that you should continue doing it. You're
never going to try something new if you don't, you know,
and experience something new, like like Package Cube saying this.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Is why Sam likes to travel alone.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
I think if it would make you happier, you can
lend me Cube this summer and I will try it.
