Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy Salmon Jody after the show podcast,
there is something that I want to try, but right now,
it's only in three cities, San Francisco, La, and Phoenix.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Well, let's go.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
I know what it is. Well, when I say what
it is, Jody's probably gonna go I'd.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Love to travel. Favorite sound my suitcase rolling across an airport.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah. So the thing that exists in those three cities
is something that our friends Mark and Oudre tried. Jody
and you may not have heard that conversation. I was
sitting up front with Mark, You and Oudre were sitting
in the back talking, and they for the very first
time when they went to San Francisco for a little weekend,
you know, couples get away. They got around town, not
in an uber, but in one of the autonomous vehicles. Yeah,

(00:44):
the way MO and so there is no driver in
these vehicles. They're completely autonomous.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
You're gonna have fun on that trip.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
You're not going to do those Oh I would love
to do that.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
I don't know that I want to do that. That
is going to feel all to me. But what do
they so?

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Well, that's what I asked Marcus, like, did you feel
weird when you when you got in and it's like, no,
he was fine with it. I think Audre at first
might have been a little bit uncomfortable. But these you know,
these cars are designed to be and you know what
they are when they're where they're in traffic. They've got
little spinners on them, they've got lights and all that.
So all the traffic around you should know that it's
an autonomous you know, vehicle.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
But we're leaving it to the traffic to We're leaving
it to other people to know that though.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Right, well it probably is way most bright on the
car somewhere too. Yeah, but it's gonna I mean, it's
it's autonomous, so it uses all it's probably like a
lot of the safety features in any car today times ten,
you know, and so it can get itself around in
its little service area. It can only do its service area.
I don't think you're going to ride the autonomous vehicle,
you know, from San Francisco to l A or A,

(01:50):
nothings like that, right, But in its you know, service area,
it's it's fully autonomous, and you order it through the
app and when it arrives to you, it comes to you.
It's locked so somebody else can't get into it. You
have a code, and then you open it up only
you can open the car, you know, and you get
into it. You can also tell it what you wanted.

(02:11):
It's fully customizable. You can have it play whatever music
you want. You can have it the climate control set
however you want it to be set. I guess at nighttime.
You can even probably choose ambient lighting. I don't know.
I haven't. I've not seen the you know, the inside
of any of these yet, but it's it's just intriguing
to me. I would love to see how that actually
works in practice. And I'm sure I could go look

(02:31):
at the YouTube videos and see it in action. But
the same that's not the same, right exactly as as
writing it. And then is it Lombard's treat that is
the Kirby Kirby Kirby. I mean, I don't know if
it does that street or not, or if that's a
no no, you know what I mean. It's a nervous
So there's an app a way, mo app, Yeah, there's
a way, mo app.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Did they tell you like versus uber? Is it comparable
or comparable.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Or meaning like in price or no?

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Idea it would be a rental.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
No, it's not on a rental. Your uberine just you're
it's a taxi you're not taking can consider a taxi?
I mean, honestly, I would. I would think it would
be competitive because it's autonomous. You know what I'm saying.
It's it would be and it's got no driver like
that too, you know, having are you not?

Speaker 2 (03:19):
You not leaving a tip? You're not getting raided? Are you?

Speaker 1 (03:23):
I mean, I don't know really again, I'm just not
I've not tried it. It just it was cool that
he explained that I didn't even realize that they had
taken the trip to San Francisco and so, you know,
it just it's one of those where I can see
it spreading. It was just San Francisco at one point.
I don't know how long it's been in those other
two cities. But on the app, i'd want to. I

(03:44):
downloaded the app just to see what it would say.
You You can intercode. It will let you know when
the service is available in your area, although I'm sure
it'll be all over the media, you know, the day
that it comes to a certain town. Describe the ride,
I mean, any scary moments now they said, it's very
it's it's it's conservative, it's easy, it takes you where
you want to go. You'd let you you know, when

(04:05):
you're out, you're done, And it's it's literally that.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
So as someone who is normally the driver, you Murphy,
when we're going anywhere, if I if I can be driven,
I'm so happy to be driven. So Murphy's always the driver.
What are you gonna do? Like, you're just gonna sit
there and go cool, like because you are used to
being in control.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
I mean, I feel I'll catch you up on email.
I don't know. I'm not driving. I don't have to
worry about anything.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Well the first time, you'll just be in awe of
the vehicle.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah, oh yeah, I would be first. I would be
a gawker. I would do that.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
I wouldn't be sit back and just okay, that's cool.
I'd be I'd have to video it. I'd have to
like look, yeah, ask it questions. I wonder if it
doesn't respond verbally, like if you want to change the
radio station, do you do that on the phone on
the app? I'm just curious.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah, I don't know. I'm gonna have to go watch
the videos on that. I just I didn't get past
the you know, cool I was just in that it
was a driverless vehicle for safety.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
For them, for the company. Are you also on camera?
Do they also track of everything?

Speaker 1 (05:07):
That's a good question too, and I bet you.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
I think you better believe that you're probably being watched
at some sort of control center or some sort of
log that they have in case of an incident. They
need to know. Yeah, you know, they need to have
their own information in addition to whatever it is that
you would report back.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this has been a well thought
out and I think and I know over the years,
we've always heard about the testing of these autonomous vehicles
and then so when that one finally came to light.
I don't remember how long waymo's actually been in existence
there in San Francisco. It's only been a couple of years,
I think. Yeah, but it's I mean, I would be
fine with it. It's not like it's going to get

(05:46):
on the freeway and do seventy five miles an hour
or anything like that. It's going to get you around town,
and you know, be conservative and safe with what it does.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
You know, the technology grows and grows, and you know,
what we think is weird can become the norm. I
remember the first time I got in a Newberg. I
couldn't believe that I was in someone's private car that
I didn't know and they were going to take me
from here to there. That felt weird, And now it's normal.
So sure, something like this can become normal. But could
it ever becut will it ever become well, well, certain

(06:20):
humans ever become comfortable with giving up that much control.
For me, I would have to say, I'm not so sure.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Yeah, well, I mean, I guess if you give it
up on certain you know, subway trains and that kind
of stuff, A lot of that is now automated and electric,
and they don't know they're not necessarily you know, people
at the helm there, when you get on those trams
at the airport, although that's automated, I wasn't thinking of that. Yeah,
there's nobody.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
There's a guy and a hat at the front.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
No, there's nobody in the front.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
You're right, I know that in my brain somewhere back there.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
I know that, But it is difficult to relinquish control. Yes,
And there's something different about a car that's not on
a rail or a track. Yes, that's also navigating around
other things, moving around it with very hard Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
I wonder if there's close calls and you're like, oh, is.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
That the only company doing it? Murphy, I bet there
are other companies in the race for it.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
I mean, there may be other developers, but it's the
only one that I'm aware of that actually is operating
in practice right now.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Well, you have fun with that only travel.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
That's what I'm going to dive into some YouTube videos
just to find out more about it. But it was
just really cool.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
