Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy Salmon Jody After the Show podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
One of the stories in Three Things to Know Today
was about all of the Americans not hitting the road
for Memorial Day weekend and so what do you do
if you're staying home for Memorial Day weekend? And it
dawned on me, Murphy, that we've never done a we
don't have a typical Hey, we always do.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
This on Memorial Day weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
No, we haven't once in a I don't think we've
ever hit the road once in a few times we've gone,
you know, down to some of the beautiful tributes with
you know, the Blue Star Moms and things like that,
and that's been beautiful and moving on Monday on Memorial Day,
which is what it's about. You know, everybody loves a
long weekend and we tend to make it about who
(00:46):
the kickoff of summer and you know, barbecues and all
of that, but it is about Memorial Day the people
who gave their lives for us, right for our freedoms.
So that's something to remember. But we've ever had a
set thing like, we don't have a tradition. And one
of the things that we talked about in three things today.
(01:07):
Is that a lot of families, because of you know,
work life, summer is about to get busy, they just
stay put.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
And when you stay put, what do you do? The
list is you do a backyard barbecue.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
And the idea now with everybody having well most most
families having streaming services and you know, like a family
area to watch stuff, is you do like a movie
marathon and you pick a theme, and you invite the
family over and you feed them and you watch a
bunch of stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
And it's like, I don't think we've ever done a
movie marathon either.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
No, we have not. I don't know that I could
do a movie marathon, though I could do. I might
be able to do one or two back to back,
but you know me, I can't.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Sit for that long.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Not Yeah, I'm not good. Yeah, once I get past
two hours, I can't do that.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Would you do a theme like a certain like Top
Gun and Top Gun two? Or would you just pick
random movies?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Well, we've made me an actor. Ooh, that's a great idea.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
I'm sort of doing a marathon right now Binge with
Gray's Anatomy.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
I'm doing that alone. Though in my free.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Time, I watch about an episode a day, and I'm
loving it because it's new stories and twist and turns
that I'm watching the seasons. I never saw there are
twenty seasons. So I've got a nice summer ahead. But
that's fun because it's the same characters and you're invested
in the characters.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, hence a marathon. Have you done Star Wars marathon? Sam?
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Actually, because I watched this behind the scenes thing on
Disney Plus a couple of weeks ago, I started rewatching
the movies. So I've watched one, two, three, and.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Four the Star Wars movies.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Yes. Cool, Like in the last week and a half,
I've watched one, two, three and four.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Nice. So you've done your own marathon already.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Yeah. So I'm about to pick up on Empire Strikes Back.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Okay, I don't know where you are. And that's where
that is.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
That's the one where Dart says, I'm your father, Luke.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Is it?
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Well it's so funny because if we mentioned this to
our kids, Murphy, who I do believe will be you know,
around for Memorial Day weekend. The problem would be deciding
what theme, because you know, Taylor loves horror movies and
I don't do them right. You know, Taylor and phoebe
like a lot of the same movies, and they would
want to introduce us to something new, and to me,
(03:22):
I'm thinking I want to introduce them to something older
and cool.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Well, why don't each of you pick a movie and
that's your marath.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
That sounds like us? That really? Really? Does you got
any ideas?
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Now?
Speaker 1 (03:33):
I mean, comedy would be fun to do, yeah, because
it's mean, it's just kind of uplifting the fun. But
I mean for me, I think it's maybe just I
can't do a marathon, as you know, so I'm not
gonna sit and do more than one one movie. I
actually need to go put more fertilizer in the backyard
because the weed kill didn't work like firs. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
(03:55):
you haven't noticed that. No, yeah, she's been watching Gray's
and Adams right.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
I think the point though, is be intentional with your time.
You have a longer weekend and instead of it just
you know, passing you by, you get the rest you need,
hopefully you see some people you love, You spend some
nice time, be intentional about.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
It's funny how being at home it's very easy to
just get really relax with that, you know what I
mean that you don't have You don't tend to build
a plan necessarily at home unless you've got a project
or something to do, right, you know, and it just
goes by.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I mean that's it's the beauty of it too.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
It is. And I do like the idea of a
movie marathon, but you know me, I can't. I am
not the type that if I spend a weekend and
all I've done is PLoP myself in front of the TV,
I just feel like I've wasted my life.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Yeah, then you handle like a movie Friday, a movie Saturday,
a movie Sunday, and a movie Monday.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Maybe I don't know, we'd have to see.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
That's the best wait, Sam, great idea, because that's the
best shot you've got at Murphy plopping down, which is.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Probably would like a little evening appointment and that sort
of thing. I can do that, right.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Yeah. I like the balance too.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
I don't want to watch movies or even when Gray's anatomy,
I can't watch more than it's like, Okay, let's go
do yoga, let's cook something, let's walk the dog.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
I can't just PLoP either.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
But what I'm saying to me, if I turn it
and I look up and it's eight hours later after
binging something, that's ever.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
I cannot do that because you're so successful oriented, which
is bravo, Murph.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
We only have a short time period to be on
this planet, agreed, And you should be able to choose
the things that you want to do.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yes, you should.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
If all you do is passive activity, life's running you.
You're not running your life.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Ah.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Quote of the podcast.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Make each of your movie, or make sure each of
your movies an event, you know, do a charcouterie board
based on whatever the movie theme is or now Martha
crow out or yeah that's a yeah whatever, Yeah, everybody
dressed like something from the movie.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
You should have somebody compensate you for your time and
ideas on this, Sam.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
It'll never work.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
It's a great idea. I will tell you this.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
The best that we have, Murphy with our kids and
their boyfriends is one movie and we provide the food.
If we tell them we're gonna feed them, they're gonna
come running and they're gonna we're gonna go in our
family room and watch the big screen together. And you know,
I don't want though it to be, all right, what
do we want to watch? Because we'll spend an hour
deciding between six people what to watch. It needs to
be we're gonna watch Jim Carrey flick scroll, We're gonna
(06:21):
pick a Marvel movie or something like that. It's gonna
have to be one that we all can enjoy together.
But I think that would be cool, in other words,
to start now, if we're never gonna travel Memorial Day weekend,
to start with some sort of little tradition at least
one of the days, at least Sunday or Monday.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Yeah, it'd be cool. Do you have any Memorial Day
regular traditions? Sam?
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Maybe grilling? I mean, I know I've done that in
the past. To me, it was always just, you know,
Memorial Day grill, July fourth grill, Labor Day grill.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Nothing wrong with that, No, not one thing, because you
have the extra time.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Although my one of my daughter in law is Caroline
Will's wife. When they were just in for the wedding,
we got to talk about my favorite subject, pizza, because
she loves to cook, and she said she's been working
on her own dough recipe and refining it. I was like, exqueeze, me.
So I said, well, can you give me the recipe?
(07:18):
And she started giving me this stuff. And this is
the way. You probably don't know this, but like Instagram, TikTok,
a lot of the pizza people, they do everything in grams,
and it's like, come on, you know, give me ounces
tea spoons and all that. So she mentioned that and
I was like, okay, I just went to Walmart bought
me a ten dollars kitchen scale. So now I have
a scale with grams, I can do the recipe. So
(07:40):
I might be experimenting on pizza dough this weekend.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Sounds great. See that's a bit of a plan, at.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
Least, ye a bit.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Yeah, do you have the outdoor Did you ever buy
the outdoor pizza ovel? Oh? Why didn't you do that
as a pizza guy?
Speaker 4 (07:52):
Seriously, Okay, calm down. I mean it's a few hundred
bucks and I have other priorities.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Forget how tight he is.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
It's not just that, it's just like, if I'm going
to have that, I want to be I almost want
to have it inside to say, hey, don't forget to
use this again this week. Okay, I just always I
put it outside. It's going to be like, oh, that's right,
I got that. Let me make a pizza.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
I guess I could see that. I just you were
so passionate about it for a while. I just I
thought you had bought one.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
I'm still looking at them, Yeah, I mean they pop
up all the time on socials and mister Pizza.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
You could get a gently used one from someone who
bought it, and doesn't you know what, that's not a
bad idea. How many people have an oonie in the
back who not touching it.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
You bought it thinking they're going to use it. They
didn't use that, correct, right?
Speaker 3 (08:38):
I think you just start shopping around for the Memorial Day.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
To me, if you if it's a holiday, it's a
long weekend where you don't necessarily have that tradition. Just
be intentional about one thing and see if it sticks.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Yeah. I like that, especially if you can get the
whole family together for that. I think when it comes
to the girls, a marathon every day would be very
difficult to organize, but one movie and one get together.
Like you're just saying, just being intentional for one thing
if you don't have any plan is just to make
that and it's special.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Remember what the holiday is about and fly your American flag.
