Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hanging out after the show. It's the Mervie, Sam and
Jody Podcast, So thank you for being a subscriber. And
you know, a couple of things that popped up that
I thought were super not interesting. It's have to say
that something is super interesting when you've got a storm
that's been bearing down like Irma has.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
But it's still interesting.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
But when I saw the announcement about Disney World closing,
you know, Orlando obviously impacted by the storm, just like
you know every other city so far along the peninsula
of Florida, and those those five times, and it's been
well four other times. Okay, this makes the fifth time.
But the only other times that the parks has closed
since it's opening in what nineteen sixty seven.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
In the sixties.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Yeah, yeah, it's the only time it's ever been closed
closed has been from ninety nine forward, if you can
believe that, really, And it was all hurricane related Hurricane
Floyd ninety nine, Francis in two thousand and four, and
again Hurricane Jeanine or Jean or whatever how we pronounced
that one. And then Matthew last year closed.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
The storm wasn't closed for Andrew.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
No, I mean, well, remember Hurricane Andrew plowed across the
southern tip of Florida, didn't go near Orlando.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
I'll remember specifics like that. You guys are weather geeks,
and I mean that lovingly.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
For first wife and I were there with Sammy during
Andrew there in Disney World and SeaWorld. We were there
at that sound since it went across the southern part
of the state.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Everything was open.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
It was just every now and then, I mean it
was breezy, but every now and then you'd get a missed,
but you could ride all the rides. They were crazy,
big deal.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
It's funny. Sam and I just started working together, and
I remember thinking, it's like you're you're going straight into
a hurricane.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
So that should have given you a really good indication
if you were dealing with Murphy, you're an idiot. So
was it more crowded because people had gone from the southern.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Now they're asking too many questions. This was not what
nineteen ninety two don't remember. Yeah, I just remember, oh, great,
this is what we're going into. And it was more
misty and right, you know, big, and then we had
to get back to go to a high school reunion.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
So and you did.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Yeah, so it really it really didn't impact me, yeah,
being down there in Disney World, although you know, it's
really cool. And they did this last week at Disney,
and they do this every time whenever they're getting ready
for a hurricane to come to the area. Is they
take the spires off of Cinderella's castle.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Oh I did not know that.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah you get picked up and.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Yeah, yeah, okay, well.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Well that is why. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
And the other thing that was, you know interesting, was
this the this bay effect thing which Jim Cantore, you, Jodah,
you and I were watching this, you know, last night,
warning everybody because you know, once these bays started to
empty because of the wind effect of the you know,
when the winds are pulling from without being like overly meteorological,
basically you know, pulling them offshore pulls the water out
(02:52):
of bays. And so we saw that early when in
the islands. But the same thing happened to Tampa Bay yesterday,
and you know, he was he was warning and in
most outlets were warning, look, don't go walking out in
this mud. I know it looks fun, the water's not there,
but it's gonna come back in and it's gonna come
back in very quickly once the you know, once the
storm moves or the winds begin to shift direction again.
(03:13):
And so I mean I saw some of those pictures
yesterday of like, you know, families walking out into the bay.
It's like it just made me nervous to watch it,
you know.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
I mean, I guess I'm living in cartoon world here.
But when water disappears like that, it doesn't leave all
the fish just lay in fly has to You didn't
just go out there with a bucket and fish, you know,
I didn't see any of that.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
The thing is, I don't think it's not like it
just disappears that fast, but it kind of appeared to drain,
but it was literally only for moments of time. You know,
once the wind shifts again, that water comes right back in.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Didn't you say, can Torri had a helmet on this
time too? Jody?
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, something, Murphy, you knew what it was.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
I was just fascinated with the walk, like the way
he moves when he's going against the wind like that.
And look, I know he's is he really the first
person to ever do this? Well?
Speaker 2 (04:02):
No, his grandiose style that he does.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
He's made a reputation of yeah, and then you see
the memes on Facebook. Oh, Jim Cantorre is coming. I know.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Just the way he was walking to me was like
something cartoon land, you know, saying it just looked like
an imitation of him or something.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
It was just crazy to me.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, there are there are a ton of storm chasers.
I mean, for every Jim Kentory, you know, there probably
are fifteen storm chasers that actually will go brave these
storms out. When we were watching the coverage on I
don't get my nights mixed up now because it all
seems kind of blurred together. I think it was I
guess it hadn't have been Saturday night. Yeah, when we were,
you know, watching parts of the Weather Channel, and there
(04:44):
was a storm chaser in Key West who was hold
up with a bunch of people in a hotel.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Then on the in the Keys since the nineteen twenties,
it's a very solid structure and it survived that big
hurricane in the nineteen thirties, and that's where they were
hold up waiting. And I'm thinking to myself, the last
place that I would want to because the Florida Keys,
because you've got a bridge that connects it, you know,
I mean.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
But he said that it held up before and he
named the other storms, so he was there were going
to and do we know the fin Did we follow
up with him? No?
Speaker 1 (05:15):
I mean that Well, that's what's been difficult, is I mean,
if if he has reported he's okay, I just haven't
seen it in the media yet. But look, power is out.
I mean, you're talking about five million people with that
power right now, so you know, it's trying to catch
up all of everything. You know. Today forward is going
to be aftermath and recovery.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Yeah, it just seems like the Keys is the last
place should want to be with something like this. Like
you said, it.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Seems like there would be nothing left. It seems like
there would be not.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
I saw some of the early early video that came
back out, and that's not what I mean. Certainly there
were areas that were very very hard hit, but there
are areas that are you know, it's I don't want
to say it looks great, you know what I mean,
but it's not like the island was level. And what
I saw there were people who were driving around finding
reports yesterday after the storm had passed through that we're
(06:01):
watching along with everybody else, And obviously our thoughts and
our prayers are with everyone who's experiencing this storm. Same
thing with you know, our Harvey relief efforts that are
going on, and for those who remember nine to eleven today, man,
that's just a lot of stuff to digest. Huh.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
