Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy, Sam and Jodi after the show podcast, I.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Want to shout out and celebrate friendship for a moment here.
You know, I've always said, and it's so true, my
girlfriends are so important to me, and I've come to
understand that the older I get, because my girlfriends are
my support system.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
You know, you guys are my besties.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Murphy, You're my best friend and life and we're married
and all that, and you know you're very important to me,
but my girlfriends. Every time I'm with a girlfriend, I
feel like my life gets enriched.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
And I just want to share a couple of little ways.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
It's not some big, huge Oprah moment, although we like
having those in life, but I want to tell you
a couple of little examples. And I do think I'm
saying girlfriends, but I do think all friends are this way.
Friends are influential and you don't realize it until those
little things pop up. Right, So I guess it matters
who you spend time with. It really does is what

(00:54):
are the influences?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Right?

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Hell, you don't want to spend time with a negative
person because it.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Rubs off, gets in.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
They say, you begin to act like the five people
you spend the most time with.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
I can see that. Yeah, and that includes family members too. Yeah, yeah,
it does.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
No wonder you don't hang around with Oh now I do. Yeah, Okay,
I'm want to tell you a couple of little stories.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
So I spent some time, significant time while we were
on vacation with a couple of girlfriends. One of them,
she's a friend of all of us.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Her name is June.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
But she and I had girl time. And we've been
friends for two decades. We've known each other for a
very long time, but the time we've been able to
spend together has normally been quick business. So we had
a girlfriend's weekend together, and we spend a lot of
time together. And I say influential. She's older than me,
she's more experienced in life than me, but she's also

(01:53):
We roll together really well.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
We shop.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
We want to go to the same stores, you know,
we want to look at the same sort of thing.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
So it's so much fun.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
But one little quick story, and I will think of
her every time I buy a handbag. Now, we were
shopping for handbags and she was saying she needed a
new crossbody.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Women will appreciate this story.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
She needed a new crossbody bag, and we were in
a department store with tons of bags, and of course
she and I both go to the sale rack for herself,
but I introduced her to a brand that she had
never heard of before, and I'm like, yeah, these are
really legit and they're strong and durable, it to last
you forever, and they have really good shapes and sizes.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Brand Consuela.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
The brand Sam, I don't know if you throw out
Michael Core's.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
Or one of those.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
It's so funny because whenever Jodie throws names, I mean
most of them, I actually don't know. She's educating me
as to you.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Know, well to the tune. Had never heard of Consuela bags,
and I'm like, look, I had, I had the tote.
I have the tote and you could spill coffee in
that thing and wipe it out and it'd be fine.
It's made for durability. But they're really cute too. So
she ended up trying one on and liking it and
loving the way it felt and looked, and you know,
you take your time with that sort of decision. But

(03:08):
she was looking at it as far as the size
and the height of it, because she said something about
her notebook. I didn't know this about her, but she
carries a notebook with her everywhere she goes in life
because one of her tricks to success is that she
writes everything down. If she's now, we can all do
that on devices. But there's something, and I respect this,

(03:30):
there's something more powerful from the brain to the paper
with when you write it, with when you actually write
it than typing it in.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Oh yes, for some reason. Yeah, that's why a lot
of my planning on ends up being the handwritten stuff
and then I can store the rest electronically. But yes,
there's something that stimulates the brain by doing that.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
And so that's one of the things that she will
not buy a handbag that she's going to carry and
use a lot unless she can fit that notebook in it.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
You know, there are a lot of great authors and directors,
any book authors and directors that do they carry notebooks
and just write all the random things that come to
their head because they know it could be a source
for content at some point in the future.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah, but it's that.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Same it's the same thing. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, Eric's
constantly right, is she carrying a full size notebook?

Speaker 3 (04:15):
No, that's what that's what see, that's the point.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
It's not a full size like mine that I'm dumb
enough to been carrying around forever. Of ideas a lot
of good stuff in here, but it doesn't fit in
my daily handbag.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Hers is more.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Now, this is a makeup palette I'm showing you, but
this is it's more of this size.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
And as soon as we.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Got in the car, we finished our whole day. We
got in the car, turn on the AC. I'm waiting.
I didn't know why we weren't backing out yet. She
was getting her new handbag out and slipping her notebook
in it to make sure, and I'm like, she is awesome.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
You know, she's making sure that this works.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
With her life, in her life because her career is
very important to her.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
And it's just like she doesn't know it.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
But in that moment, that was influential to me, mean
to me, I almost am going to steal that and go,
I'm gonna downsize my notebook size and start carrying it with.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Me everything that's function and fashion.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
I know, June, this is the way. That's what I mean.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Friends really influence your life for the good or the bad.
But you know, you pick good friends. There's some good
influence there, so I'll be looking for a smaller notebook
with June's inspiration. Another quick little story is our friend Audra.
She and I spend a lot of time together, and
she and I are very alike. We cook a lot.
I cook a lot and create stuff in the kitchen.

(05:28):
She's better than almost anybody I've met. She could run
a fantastic restaurant like. She just is unafraid to try
anything and throw things together. She'll walk into the kitchen
with us there like with people to host going I
don't know what I'm putting together yet, and I've seen
her do it ten times.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
And it's always fabulous. She's a natural born cook.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
So she was putting together a Greek salad and it
was delicious, by the way, tordolini and chicks and feta
and olives and olives and all this kind of stuff.
And I was like, what kind of dressing are we
going to put on this? And she was like, I
don't know, let me just figure it out. And I've
done that before, but not as beautiful, beautifully as she did.

(06:15):
I watched her do you know oil vinegar? Some she
did so fast, I don't know what spices shewn dress.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
She made it.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yeah, she made it. And my favorite little hack though
that she did. I have so many little Mason jars
and cute little jars in our kitchen, and I bring
salads to work in them. I had not thought about
using them just to mix dressing up. She poured it
all in there, and she shook it up, and that's
what she poured on that big salad. I'm like, duh,
I don't know how that. Never I've always when I've

(06:45):
made dressing, it's been in a blender like and I poured.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
I don't know. She just made it like that.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
And even though that's something simple, if I've not ever
done it that way, I picked that up from her
influential So I don't think that girlfriends are the only ones.
I think men are influential toward each other like that.
You just maybe don't realize it.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
I think what you're talking about, I mean, you actually
kind of have two things going there. One is the
shared experience with the other is the you know, the friendship.
I remember my mom telling me when I was in
middle school that you know, it's when you're stressing about
like friends and this, that and the other, and she says, Look,
not everybody is going to be a close friend. And
you'll see as you get older, it's going to be
like a core group of friends that really wind up

(07:29):
being the ones that you know are close to you.
The Yeah, it's a smaller group. That's really the kind
of group where you can completely be yourself, you know,
unfiltered around or really the best friends to me. And
that's really what that's who Mark and Odre are. It's
just like you are. You're just end June the same
way you can just be and it's a wonderful, you know,
experience to share. So you've got that part when you're

(07:50):
talking about the support system. But I'm constantly learning things
that I didn't know. In fact, I'm trying to remember
right before you and I left, Mark and Odres, I
was in the kitchen and there was something that morning
that I learned right before No, well from I don't remember.
Something was explained. It was the first thing.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
They're eating blueberry muffins that she made homemade and bacon.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Remember that, Yeah, but that's not what it That's not
what it was. It was one of these blatantly obvious
things that probably the world knows.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Oh wait, I knew it too, and you didn't. It's
the we were packing an ice chest because we're gonna
be in the car.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Oh yeah, right, our.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Little ice chest that we had brought with our little
cold packs, the blue ones that are that have the
grooves in them.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
The frozen packs you keep them in the freezer and
then yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Well you want to tell them what you learned about it?

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Well, I just happened to be putting them in the
little container and Mark was asking if we want we
wanted some coke zeros to go, and I started putting
them in there. I'm like, oh, wow, look this is
perfect the way these are shaped. I can actually put
the cans between the ice packs and really like, oh, duh, wait,
that's what they're for, you know. And I could not
believe that. I never knew that because I'd never packed
with him, I'd always seen him in the freezer. I

(08:57):
never thought twice about why they were rippled. And then
I realized, oh, they surround the cans that way. You know.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Isn't that weird? Though? How you can look at that
constantly You've had your whole life, correct, never occurred to you, right,
And so.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
The heck that you learned from friends.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
Right, Well, then that's what I'm saying. It's just the
you know, the the hanging up part of it.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Anyway, I want to say this, I just I know
I make note of it. I make a mental note
of it. When man, I just my life is enriched
just by being with my friends. It's not always some heavy,
big thing. There is that support some of the biggest
things in my life. I feel comfortable sharing with my friends,
and I'm grateful for that. His friendship is actually like
family that you choose. Yeah, not that it always lasts.

(09:37):
Sometimes you have friends that come in and out of
your life at a certain time and you know then
they they're not in your life anymore. It doesn't mean
it was bad and not valuable. It just means it's
time has passed.

Speaker 4 (09:49):
You know. Uh, Murphy is that person with me? Sometimes
when Murphy, when Murphy starts talking, when you start talking
about your some kind of gadget or whatever. Yeah, it's like,
if there's any person on this planet I know that's
investigated it thoroughly forwards, backwards, left, right, east, west, whatever,
it's Murphy. And if Murphy says, oh, the X brand

(10:09):
number you know X fourteen Dash da da da dah,
that's the one because d it's like, well, I don't
need to do any research.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
That's pressure. It's it's so funny. I think I got
that from my parents. My mother was one of those
that would investigate and read everything, I mean everything before
they were the kind that would keep all of their
instruction manuals to things and all that kind of you
know stuff too. But but yeah, that's where I got
that from, because before you and you know, I mean,

(10:39):
they worked very hard for their money. So they wanted
to make sure their belief absolutely was they didn't want
to buy something on the cheap that they wind up
having to pay for again, because they thought that that
was really wasteful because you either pay for it now
or you pay for it later. And so she was
always trying to find that sweet spot of something that was,
you know, of great quality, even if it wasn't the
cheapest price, but wasn't the most expensive. Now. Granted, my

(11:02):
mother would probably spend way too much time on some things.
And it's a lot easier today when you can look
at a combination of one star in five star reviews
and you know, everything's online for you know, for you
to do comparisons and you get real time. But she
was you know, she would dig in and research, go
to the stores, touch it, all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
I think Murphy is that person for more people to
other people. While we were at the spending time with
Mark and Audre, you were riding the sea do which
we'll tell you about that tomorrow in the show. But
you were out riding the seado on the lake and
I was in the lake on a floaty with Mark
and Audre and I remember him saying to me, I

(11:40):
need to get Murphy to help me rewire my whole
house the speaker system. And I was like, okay, I'm
sure he'd be happy to do that with you. He goes,
not this time, but another time he's going to I
think he said something like that to me about that
it was a lot.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
There was a lot going on in music and all that.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
Yeah, we've had the conversations about the you know, the
Alexa speakers and the Sona speakers and all that kind
of stuff. And he's, you know, I mean, he and
I are just alike. You like having your music everywhere
and when you go from room to room or you know,
his case going, you know, outside and in you. It's
kind of cool to have that little fluid thing where,
if you're a music lover, you walk outside of you

(12:20):
walk out of your kitchen and then you go outside
and that same song is still playing or whatever.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
You know.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah, So so I'm you know, I'm happy to do
that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
So shout out to friendship being so influential in little
and big ways in your life.
