Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy Sam and Jody after the Show podcast.
And this, I believe is a classic American problem. Hopefully
not a concern, you know, for us. But you buy
something that's going to just wind up collecting dust. You
start off, you buy it for good intentions, and then
it just sets because it winds up getting unused, Like
exercise equipment. That's number one, That's actually where I'm going

(00:22):
with this. But sometimes it's stuff that you put on
your you know, your kitchen counter, oh right, you know
what I mean, little appliances and stuff like that. The
problem is the exercise equipment usually is a little more expensive, right, huge, right.
But the reason i bring it up is because I'm
actually excited that Jody and I have ordered a treadmill
for the house, you know, to do regularly because it

(00:43):
is you know, the weather, hot heat stuff rows you off, right,
don't worry about the weather, right exactly. And so, and
I need to get a little more cardio in my life.
I've been working out doing all the weight training stuff
now for fifteen years, but I don't really have enough
cardio and I always find an excuse not to do it.
But I'm excited about this arriving you. You're excited too, righty.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Am, Because I will use it. I already had to
sell Murphy the disclaimer. Understand, I am still going to
walk outside. I love nature, I love to see the birds. YadA, YadA, YadA,
you know the deal. But when the weather does not permit,
there have been so many times where I'm just in
the house going I.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Had scheduled a walk.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
I knew I was going to walk today, you know,
walking with the vest or whatever, or doing a super
fast one or just a relaxy one.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
It doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
So I know that I will use this even if
I do it in front of the TV.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
You could do it in front of a window and
get your nature. Yeah, you do a lot of stuff
in front of the windows already.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Anywhere I'm not so much anymore.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Anyway, I wonder you moved us to a house with
nobody in front of us but a bunch of woods.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
So I'll share with you in a minute how actually shopped.
It's some of the really odd things I discovered when
I was looking for the right one. To the reason
that I'm worried about it collecting dust is our know
our intentions are good. I do believe that you and
I will use this. I really do. However, you know
what I'm going to be getting rid of is an
exercise bike that has now been sitting unused for eight months.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
And you remember when that showed up?

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Yeah, and I do well. You sadly you predicted it.
I just thought you were being negative and I'm like,
I'm gonna ride this thing. You watch, Jody, I'm gonna
ride this thing every day for the rest of my life.
You did keep up with it, though, for a while
I did. I wrote it. Yeah, it was six months.
Here's what No, sir, No, sir, you don't think so.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Three at bast. Sorry, honey, you're a very busy person.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
It was a hard work out. It felt like six months.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Can I tell my favorite bike story? The best bike
story was first of all, it was almost one of
those things.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
It was almost a very bad day at our home
because he didn't tell me he'd ordered a bike. I
got home from the grocery store to find him in
the middle of delivering with a hundred pieces around him,
and he was putting it together, and I'm like, you
bought a huge piece of exercise equipment and didn't tell me.
The decorator of this house, and so we had this.
We had a standoff about it, but I'm going to

(03:18):
ride it and he My favorite story was this, you
had gone to the doctor. It was in the middle
of December. I remember this because there was so much
crazy Christmas stuff gone on.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
You had gone to the doctor and you had gotten.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Uh, what is your steroid show? Which I normally don't
get being type one diabetic, but it was everything that
I had was pretty rough and needed to.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Be kicked right.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah, So when that happens, when you get a steroid shot,
your body is on high alert for everything. You just
feel like you can climb mountains. So one night in dark,
cold December, I'm trying to go to sleep on time,
you know, eight and nine o'clock early, and he doesn't
roll into into the bedroom till like ten thirty because

(04:02):
he was riding the bike into blot But it was
the steroid thing.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
He was insane riding.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Yeah, I was like, I have I got to get
on the bike. I could have gone another thirty minutes
if the truth be told. But you know, the uh,
what's weird about that? Is in the I get maybe
this is the irony of that too is. I wound
up getting really, really sick. That was the year I
had the horrible the flu and it tore me to pieces.
Remember I lost my voice here. I couldn't even do
the show here for a week. It was. I was

(04:29):
sick for three weeks. That three week window was enough
for me to completely break the cycle, so to speak.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
The bike that long.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah, we've had the bike for a long time. Yeah,
so you know, it's seems to me so it has
been sitting longer unused now than actually being close heading
on it. No, No, I know, and it's in great shape.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
And I don't like it either.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
It's a resistance bike and it's tricky. You don't know this.
I was using this, you're resisting it all. It's the
it's they use it for interval training and where I
work out, they've got several of them, and I actually
did like it for a while. They are not easy
to use when you start to do the interval stuff
and you start to go because the faster you pedal,

(05:15):
the more resistance it is, right, So, but the problem
with it. As much as I enjoyed it and I
love the arms work out to my upper body, I
just I don't not explain that. I crave the upper
body workout part. It just feels so good. And this
bike has the moving arms, so I love that part
of it. The problem with the bike is once you know,
thirty minutes and I would do thirty to thirty five

(05:37):
on it. Every time I would do it is despite
the seat cushion.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, it's not comfort you.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
It becomes uncomfortable no matter what you do, no matter
how much shifting you do, right, you can't. You can't.
It's crack. Yeah. So I'm like, so that kind of
ruined it, you know, for me. So I'm going to
go into this with the belief that we're going to,
you know, use this treadmill, and I are and so.
But when I was looking for these, there are a
couple of different models out Now. You can buy these

(06:07):
little walking treadmills to put under our desk. Right. You
can even bring it to work with you if you
want to, which is not meant for it. It's gonna
be like heavy duty workouts, but it's great for a
desk or whatever. And you can get those for like
one hundred bucks. But there's a whole line of cheap
foldable treadmills that you kind of have to watch out for.

(06:27):
They're all brand names that you've never heard of because well,
quite frankly, they're not made here. And you know you've
been shopping on TikTok.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
I have a girlfriend who bought one on TikTok as
a fold up. She loves it, She walks on it
in front of her TV and has not messed with
Harry at well.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
I started looking at some of the ratings on these
because it's too good to be true. I'm like, wow, really,
for two ninety nine, I could get, you know, a
full blown treadmill. But then you start to read about
how because it's going to be me and you using it. Well,
at least that's the goal. That's the goal. Minus one.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
You want to lay some money down.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Yeah, yeah, I'll take a piece of that act. And
you know, so when you start to read the reviews
on these and you see how things, you know, break down,
they those don't hold up well, and so you wind
up kind of paying something for something twice. It's kind
of that's that rule that my parents always have. It's
like do your homework, you know, don't don't buy the

(07:19):
cheapest because it's the cheapest, by the least expensive, that
has the best reputation, and then you want me buying
it twice. So that's what I think I went for.
And there's a whole there's a whole trend now of
the folding treadmills because most people don't want a treadmill
and or you don't have the space for a glass.
It's not a great looking piece of equipment to have

(07:41):
in the living room, right.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Unless you have a room that's the workout room and
you can close that door all the time.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Right, Yeah, not pretty. I mean as it was, the
bike didn't look that great in the failing room.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
It is absolutely not. That's why I kept moving it around.
We have people over, I'm like, I stick is in
the bedroom. Yeah right, it's in the guests bedroom.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
Now, so you know, anyway, I found this when it's
on sale. I don't know why. Summertime is the time
that people Maybe this is the time of the year
that things go and sale because everybody's New Year's resolutions.
They're going to go and buy stuff right at the
beginning of the year or the holiday stop. Right, Yeah,
you move in when all the resolutions have broken down
and you can get it, you know, for less.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
For less money, sell it on a Facebook marketplace.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
I do not want to do that. That is work.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
If you list something and you've got one hundred people
asking you one hundred questions.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
And it's assembled, so it weighs a ton and you're
not going to disassemble it to transport it, I wouldn't
think any get it out the door. Oh yeah, you
can get it out the door. It's got rollers. You
just have to lift at a really weird angle, but
you can. Yeah. Right, so so we'll see.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
I'm just glad.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Look this has been sort of building, you know, in
our marriage the day Like I didn't once you wanted
it and you wrote it for three months, I thought, okay,
just you know, shut up about it, don't say anything.
But you know, on my rainy days when I'm sitting
there looking at that bike and I hate the b

(09:08):
I don't like riding a bike. As soon as you
ordered it, I knew I would never use it. It's like, oh,
you bought exercise equipment.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Oh it's a bike. So I was. I was disappointed.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
And then I thought, I remember having one conversation a
year in or nine months in you know, if we
got something that we both would use, that would probably better.
So this was Murphy's idea. By the way, what two
days ago, I'm going to get a treadmill.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
I was like, yes, yeah, well so we you know,
the goal will be to use it. I thought that
the bike was going to be good because it wasn't
gonna be rough on the knees and stuff. And you know,
it didn't didn't work out. It wasn't rough on the knees.
It was rough on the butt. Yes, and that's actually
what I think. You know, that's ultimately finally killed it
for me. It's like, do I really want to create
another blister or do I want some good exer? No, no, no,

(09:53):
I didn't. It did not go that far.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
Never had a Blister's exaggerating, exaggerating.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
So it's just like all the bells and whistles, you know,
the incline and all that stuff. Well, I wouldn't call
it bells and whistles. Actually it's got you.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
Could actually have a bowel a whistle on a bike.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
Sam. It's really let's just say it's got bells and
no whistles because it's like all that it does. The
incline up and down. But that's part of the reason
it's less expensive is I don't need all the Bluetooth
and the speakers and the you know and all that stuff.
I just want you just need to walk. I need
to be able to walk. I wanted the deck to
be wide enough. It's twenty inches wide, which is the

(10:30):
happy medium between having a full blown running treadmill where
you have more space and the stride is not quite
as long. But Jody and I aren't gonna be running.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Long dishay, Well did you asked me that too?

Speaker 2 (10:39):
While he was online by searching and he's like, are
you going to be running on this?

Speaker 3 (10:43):
And I'm like, no, I'm not. In My running days
are probably I see.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
And that saved us four hundred bucks. Right, you said
you weren't going to run. Kick it down a notch baby.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
This is the disclaimer I want to say right now
to your ask. You just say, right now, in front
of everybody, still going to walk outside.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
I don't want you to.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
No, it's fine.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Yeah, I misunderstand that.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
I'm not I'm not one to judge anything. Look, I'm
the one that left a bike sitting for you know,
months and so.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
It's all right.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah, so we'll see what happens, you know, when it
when it gets in and you then the commitment is
maybe I just set the initial goal. Let's go more
than three months.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
You don't, you know, you don't need to over commitment
yourself either on it. When you feel like getting on it,
get on it, and when you don't, don't. But but
over after we've had it a few months, be realistic
with yourself about how, you know, how have you really have.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
To assemble this thing? Yes, but it's not difficult to assemble.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
You've done it before.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Well you know me, it's easy. You don't read the instructions,
you put it together wrong, you take it apart again.
Then you read the instructions and put it together.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
Have extra cruise. Anyway, look at me, I'm so excited.
I'm excited.
