Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks for hanging out with us after the show. Another
episode here of the Murphy Sam and Jody After the
Show podcast. I should you know this is not a
techie update kind of a thing.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Is you can hang around Jody yay.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
This is the average dude's observation on something that has
become a national phenomenon over the last couple of years,
home automation, and namely the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Right. So,
I mean, it's it's it's everywhere, and it's really kind
of cool to the point where it almost spoils you.
Sam was really the first one in the room. I
think you got the Amazon Echo before we had one.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
The Echo last we Actually it might have been the
same time. I got it last Christmas, because didn't you
get yours on Black Friday last Christmas? Not this one
that just passed, but the one before.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Jodey was purchased on Black Friday. Yes, you got it
for Christmas. Thanks for revealing, will say.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Jenny spoiler after the fact, that and U and then
so you know, and we waited and you know, I mean
there were some specials this year on the dots. I'm like, wow, okay,
so we got dots. Jody and I did for the
girls rooms, and then Sam subsequently you've done the.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Same, snatched up three dots for the kids.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
And they don't know that they have them yet, right, No, No.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
They know about the dots because they have them hooked
at their Bluetooth and they can play my music and
all that.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
They don't know about them.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
I asked questions of it because they hooked them up
in their rooms. They don't know. They don't know I've
secretly I've connected the dots to my echo.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Right.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
That's funny with the drop in feature where you I
can actually it's like an intercom. I can say Alexa,
and I apologize in advance if you have this on
and you had this hooked up, but you say, Alexa,
drop in on Jack's echo, and it will drop into
his room and.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
It says something, or it just comes on the light.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
On his little thing comes on. It's a different color,
and I can just say, hey, Jack, it's time for dinner.
You can talk back and forth to me, and you can, actually, Murphy,
can't you talk from echo to echo a dot to dot?
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yes, you can talk. You can drop in on any dot.
It turns green and that's how you know that it's active.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
It's so funny.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
It was one night when you were setting this up, Murphy,
I felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of cyborgs.
I'm in the living room, in the middle of the room,
folding clothes and doing you know, human things, And Murphy's
in the kitchen area, which is near the living room,
and talking to the big echo giving it commands. I
like the blank blank blank blankly blank blank, And I
can hear Phoebe on the other side of me in
(02:14):
her room saying Alexa play Michael Jackson, I mean, just
everybody around me is talking to a device. Yeah, I
felt like I was surrounded by robots.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Well, Sam's been talking about the the hue bulbs or whatever,
the light bulb. Yes, so you can control those, and
I haven't gone that round.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
You buy that light bulb and Alexa can control it.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, but I believe so I haven't gone that far yet.
What do you mean to have Alexa control my lights?
I just I have the huge app on my phone.
You control it from the bridge, which is the device
that I can have all the light bulbs wired to.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
So I thought that was the point, was to be
able to speak it you know. Baby, see I'm about
to dive all in. Yeah, but it's occurring to me
before I get too far into this. What happens when
you know, if anybody can walk into your house and
control anything at any point, the more that you security
system your home, well, because when it does it's not
(03:09):
like these home automation systems know your voice print. You
can teach them for better accuracy, but anybody can walk
in and say turn the lights off, turn the AC on,
turn off the security.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
System, or walk and man except pet sitters.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
For that's my point.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
If somebody walks in to rob your house, they're not
going to be interested in turning your lights on and off.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Well, I guess that's true.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Hey, look they have an echo Alexa, tell us a joke,
what's the weather?
Speaker 1 (03:35):
But because you can do so many different things, you know,
I mean you can you can check your bank balances,
you can and there's so many things that you can do.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
To check your bank balances. I haven't gotten that right.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Well, man, maybe I don't. Just I'm because I just
want to try.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
It's just so funny too that mister safety, you want
to do all this with Alexa and have uh, you know,
our echo control a lot because you have You've always
loved that. You you're so excited about the possibility of
it and the fact that it's that it can happen,
But you still don't believe our your phone is listening
(04:10):
to you, and it totally is.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
No I know is what we're talking about right now.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
In fact, you're going to open your phone later today
with some sort of hue light bulb thing.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
I promise you, you know it. It's going to happen.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
I know, I just don't even though I've seen it.
Because what Jody's talking about is we were watching the
final episode of The Crown and when I picked up
my phone and I touched the search bar in Google,
the first thing that popped up in my newsfeed was
you know, how real is this and that you know
regarding thebuster of that, And I look at I told Jody,
I said, Okay, this this is a little creepy. I
(04:44):
still don't buy into I'm being listened in ones, but
but you know, it makes me realize that every time
we talk about this in a podcast or on the show,
we need to be careful about the use of the
names Alexa. Yeah, then they give it a second there, SOUSI.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Will you just say echo?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
We said that's right, right, right right, we should say that. Yeah,
And the same thing with Google Assistance, so that we
don't activate that.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Can't you set it off by saying aka? Or you
have to just say Alexa.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
I think you have to say the name.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Yeah, you have to say her. Yeah, you have to
say her name, and anybody that's listening right now on
an echo for example, we just went for a second
right exactly, and then came back up. So weird how
that happens.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
And you guys have your fun tech weekend. I'm gonna
do some lunch I do.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
I'm gonna try the whole colored lights thing, you know,
I mean, I just that's the next thing. If Sam's
gonna try it, I gotta try it. Joey, you know
how that works?
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Honestly, it's the bug has bit me. I have four
light bulbs houcked up to it. I want to go
buy more bulbs and hook up the rest of the house.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Well, check your phone later. I'm sure you'll get a deal.
