Speaker 1 (00:00):
And here's today's episode of Murphy. Sam and Jody after
the show, thank you for hanging out with us and
subscribing to the podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Sam, would you like to come over and eat with
us every night this week? Because we have so much
leftover food from this little party I through from Murphy.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
I was wondering why you were inviting Zam over for
dinner every night. Yeah, there was a lot of food
left over.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
I overdid the food ordering.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Here's the deal, though, if everyone that I invited, all
of his high school friends and family, could have shown up,
and everybody that I was expecting it would have I'm
not good at that. I'm not good at estimating how
much food because I'm thinking I grew up around a
lot of big eaters, like men who come and get
(00:40):
seconds and thirds, So in my brain I account for that.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
I do it outer double the amount of food I
need it.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
That's okay, though, because it's better to have extra than
to run out.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
That's right, I got I know that.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
I guess a party where the platter goes empty, Yeah,
that's a bummer.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Never, we didn't even open the second platter of Sam,
that's how much food we had.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
You've still had a bunch left on the first platter.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Guess what I had, And that's because you left early,
Sam oh okay the second The first platter whittled down
by the end of the night. But I have a
bunch of sandwiches in our freezer now, and we did
send a bunch of food home with as many people
as would take it. All was thinking about beating the
fire department.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
But then everyone was all that, it's a great idea.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I know. The girls were like, well, I want to
bring this spaghetti meatballs here and there, and I'm going
to try to bring someone to my grandfather.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Today and stuff like that.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
That's good.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
So he had trays of sandwiches and spaghetti meatballs, which
was really good.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
It was perfect, you know. The trick about putting together
a surprise party, and Jody was stressing, this is what
I do love about this. You know, Jody and I
been married for eighteen years now, and so I mean,
we communicate everything to each other all the time, so
trying to put together a party like this is extremely stressful.
I know, because all the things that Jody wants to
(01:56):
tell me she can't tell me.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
It wasn't really extremely stressful. Till the day before, the
few days before, in the day of for.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
You were worried I was gonna find out, is what
you told me Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Well, yeah, all of thevery every little arrangement I made
starting in June was on my phone, you know, text email.
So that's no stress and it's just plans. But by
Friday afternoon, like Friday, when you needed me to run
an errand with you in the middle of the day
at lunchtime, I couldn't because I had to go to
their house okay, drop off stuff, Okay, And so I'm
(02:29):
that's what was stressful to me, Like the lying. Yeah,
because I talked on my way home from Randy's house
on Friday back to coming back to the radia session.
I'm on the phone with you, and I'm thinking, where
am I going to say I was? Where am I
going to say I was? If he asked me where
I was, you did not. You were like, I've got
a conference call and I'll see you later. You didn't
even ask me where I was. So it was awesome.
(02:52):
But that whole thing, that whole dance, and then Saturday,
leading up to the party, I told you I was
taking Phoebe shopping for your birth day present.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
That is not what I was doing.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
We were picking up balloons, We're picking up cakes, paying
for catered food.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Blah blah blah blahah.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
I'm off. I'm curious, Murphy, how did the girls behave?
Speaker 1 (03:11):
You know?
Speaker 4 (03:12):
I think they.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Girls did great. You know, It's it's funny because there
at sixteen and thirteen. Now they're at the place where
they're able to keep the secret. I think Phoebe probably
was a little bit nervous about she was the boy,
because she was the right was the one that had
to be in the car with me when we were
on the way to the party. But I think that
she was totally calm. The only thing that I thought
was a little bit off was everybody was just their
(03:34):
conversations were a little shorter with me on Saturday than normal.
Short not in a curt way, but short isn't just
like word economy. I'm like, this is just it was
just weird. But Jody was brilliant with the one thing
that she threw me off with, which was keep your
Sunday open, so all of my focus and attention was
on something going on Sunday. She knows I would probably
(03:55):
figure something out otherwise and so even if I questioned it,
I was like, Okay, this is not something and what
is going on? I could not do that.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Saturday morning, he was making the bed and I was
Phoebe was sleeping late, but I was getting ready to
take her to do all those errands, right and we're
just in the bedroom and you're making the bed and
you and you go, do I need to pack a.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Bag for Sunday?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
And I'm like, no, I'll give you. I'll tell you
everything you need this Sunday morning. And you walked out
of the room and I did my little day. I
was like, oh my gosh, he really thinks there's something Sunday.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
We can be good.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
And as it got closer to the evening, to the
time of you bringing Phoebe for you know, this sleepover.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
You thought it was a sleepover.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
That's when we got more quiet and more nervous, because
it's like, don't say too much.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
I told Phoebe, you know Kase.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Phoebe had been to mister Randy's house with me several
times that day and she was in love with their cat.
They have a cat that's hypeo allergenic, so she's like
I love this cat, you know. And I'm like, okay,
I said, don't tell daddy you saw don't talk. She
was talking to Taylor. She called Taylor, oh my god,
this cat. And I'm like, remember you haven't been at
(05:02):
your friend's house today, so I don't say anything about
the cat to dad.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
And she's like, oh, you're right. I'm like, you know, you.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Got to keep this facade up that we just went shopping.
She was like, should we bring shopping bags into the house.
I'm like, no, you know, he doesn't pay that close attention,
and we wouldn't bring them in anyway. We'd leave him
in the house so he wouldn't see the bags if
we were shopping. It is so exhausting to be deceptive.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah, it's justice, you know.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
I'm proud of Phoebe for pulling it off too, because
she probably had the hardest job riding in the car
with you, Marc. She did, yeah, you know, making small talk.
You know, it's just ahead, man.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
But she didn't overdo it.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
And that's what I was going to say.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Remember, you know, in everybody's experience, when your kids are
younger and you let them into the secret like that,
they almost tried too hard and they're smiling constantly.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
What's up?
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Taylor was about of all people that when we were
in the house and with the lights mostly out and
we need Phoebe texted me. When they left the driveway,
she said, Okay, on our way, and then when she
got closer, she would give me landmarks. You know, we're
just passing the hospital now, so I knew that when
you were coming. Yeah, Taylor was the one who was
about to come out of her skin.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
She was so excited.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
She was so worried that you were going to know,
and so was I, but I was trying to keep
it together.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
You know, Murphy, you probably don't know this, but there
was a moment when you were sitting around in the
kitchen with probably about ten people just laughing and telling stories,
and I caught Taylor standing off to the side just
watching you. Yeah. Really, Oh that's that was nice because
she was just watching daddy have fun.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
Yeah, I think Taylor really enjoyed that.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Taylor has always loved that element of surprise and being
part of it. I think is like one of the
most exhilarating things that she can, you know, do true,
she always wants to be part of making somebody else
happy like that. In fact, you know, that was the
first thing when I walked in. She was like, did
you know?
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Did you know?
Speaker 1 (06:52):
You were you surprised?
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Like, yeah, yeah. Here's another little quick story.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Saturday morning, before she left, before I brought her to work,
we were in the main area of the house, in
the living room, and you were sitting there drinking coffee
or whatever. And I said, Taylor, did you do that
thing with your bearded dragon with nugget like I told
you to? And she goes, She looked at me, and
she knew I meant, let's go back there and talk,
and so we go. I said, come here, and I
(07:16):
try to make it just a normal thing that mom
would do, which that's so normal because I'm always I'm
pet patrol.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
So we go back in her room and.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
She turns around to me, she goes, there's my bag
because I brought her bag, her change clothes bag.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
She worked all day that day until the party. So
I said, did you back to the back?
Speaker 2 (07:34):
She pointed to me on the bell like there it is,
and we already did our little dance like cause she's like,
he thinks we're fighting the bearded dragon right now. So
we're back in the bedroom dancing, and then we are
so excited and we turn it down again and walk
out from the hallway like nothing, Like, I'm just on
her about the pets and I take her to work.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
So that kind of stuff was going on. You just
didn't know it.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Yeah, I just didn't. I guess I thought you were
just riding her about the bearded dragon the game.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Anyway, Thank goodness, there are no more secrets, or are there.
Your birthday's tomorrow?
Speaker 3 (08:07):
