Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's the Murphy Saman Jody after the show podcast where
we're still here. We still hang out for a little
bit longer up.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
We're coffee crashing.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
But yes, Sam doesn't want to leave because the sooner
he leaves today, the quicker he's going to have to
be in the car with his you know son, Jackson
got his learning permit, driving permit.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
It's a good report recently.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Yeah, well, I mean I was really surprised and the
actual long drive I let him do fifteen minutes in
the car. Nice little rain was going on there too.

Speaker 4 (00:26):
I have found out about parenting that sometimes they surprise you, yeah, delightfully.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
And I think it's probably because the fact that he
had his eight hours of training is actual behind the
wheel training with an instructor. Because before that, the only
thing I'd let him do was the neighborhood and everything.
I was having to say everything seatbelt timers, look to
slow down, do that right, And so now that these
had the instructor, we did it the other day for

(00:53):
like fifteen minutes, like I said, and it was amazing. Yeah,
you know, I had a For some reason, Jackson hugs
the right side of the road, So there was this
fear of me, you know, because I'm looking right at
all the mailboxes whizzing by.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
You'd rather am hug the right side of the roads
than the left. Ye, they're going to air to one side.
And the other one was that he turns fast.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Every young new driver, Terrence doesn't slow down enough for
the turn, is my experience.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Well, you don't because you don't know, don't know that feeling.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Yeah, until you really understand the physics and how heavy
the car is and all those other things, it doesn't click.
But you know, I said this with our oldest daughter
Taylor when she was getting hurt. Well, she had gotten
her permit, and Phoebe's next in line for this, so
we'll be doing it again soon. Yes, but it's I
think I was a reasonable teacher, But there's always something

(01:44):
better to me about having somebody who's not emotionally connected
to the coaching, because I don't know. They're just going
to focus, they're going to listen. They're not focused on
the fact that, oh my gosh, I want to make
sure that Dad's okay with this. They're focused on actually
learning how to drive. Yeah, And I guess it's easier
for that. The other part the instructor to do it
because they know they have control of the car if

(02:04):
they need it in front of them, and they do
it all the time.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
Yeah, and it's it's it's a fact you're learning, you know, Taylor,
slow down before you turn is just a fact, not
a feeling. But if it's coming from mom or Dad,
it's a feeling. Oh gosh, they're judging me. So yeah,
it's always better.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
The other thing Jackson did tell me after driving my
car once is that it's going to be his car
in the future because he liked this car. Well, the
first thing you did is as soon as we started
thing pull out of the driveway, he goes, oh, this
one is much more responsive. I was like, wait, wait, wait,
slow down, what do.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
You mean this one?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah, And so the first turn he took it was
just like whoa y called power steering. Jack calm down here.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
I think it's cool though, for him to say, look,
I feel more comfortable in this vehicle.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
That's a fact.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
I mean, I have to drive him more.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
I remember, I remember Taylor in the vehicle when she
went to have her first round of her test to
pass for her license. She she did, I liked the
vehicle that she was driving, because it wasn't what she
was used to, and apparently there was a little bit
of like play in the wheel, which I didn't even
know that could happen anymore where. You know what I
mean by that is when you turn the wheel slightly

(03:11):
near the direction, the car doesn't respond because it's just.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
It's not tight.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
It's a little bit loose. And that's what was happening
in the car that she was in. So she she
felt that the car was over correcting. But I bet
you also that was a like a super sensitive power
steering thing, hm, instead of her car, which is not
it's got power steering, but it's tighter. It just you
you know what I mean, You don't you have to
push a little bit harder for to turn in need
the direction.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
I mentioned earlier today when we talked about it about uh,
you know, Jackson being all over me now about he
you know, he's the expert driver now ever since ever since,
you know, because when I started, when I drove him,
after he drove you know, it was all over you.
He keeps telling me I have to check my blind spot.
He keeps telling me you have to turn your blinker

(03:55):
on you know, you know, it's the rolling through the
stop signs.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
So it feels good to him to know some of
this stuff, and I do, and I.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Am doing my best to withhold the okay I've been
driving for you.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Know, hold your horse's kid.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah, it's like, you know, how are you going five
miles over the speed limit? And you know, part of
me wants to say, well, yeah, it's an unwritten rule
that you can do that. But even though it's not,
you know, well.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
You know, I don't know that they're trying to tell
us what to do as much as they are just
trying to recite what they've learned.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Yeah, and I think that's what it is. It's the
top of his head right now. This is I know.
I know that, and I know that, and so why
is Dad not doing that?

Speaker 4 (04:33):
It's exciting for them to actually be able to play
in that world because before they were just passengers. What's
interesting to me, And I know you've said that it's
sort of changed. You have to sort of start paying
more attention because they're with you and they know the
rules now. I also think when I'm riding now with
the girls, because Phoebe is interested now she is paying attention.

(04:55):
She rides with Taylor sometimes, so she's talking about, hey,
can I, you know, go out and driving a parking lot.
She's been asking those questions I also think about and
it causes me to second guess what the things I
say in the car to other drivers, and you know,
not to them, I don't speak to them, but within
the within the confines of the car, we all talk.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
About it, like, oh, look at this guy pull in
front of me, and you know, I'll do the holl
come while we're young.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Come on, I do didn't feel like Wednesday because this
dry guy's driving like it's Sunday.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Oh you know what, And that is fun because I
want to be in the car when he starts mouthing off.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
One makes them that.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Version of them I know well.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
And that was actually one of the things I realized
very quickly with both you and I had to stop
doing that, Jody. When Taylor first started driving.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
I wish i'd stopped early on.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
She was complaining about every I'm like, you know what,
this is why you're still learning how to drive the car.
Maybe maybe you shouldn't do that. Uh oh, maybe she's
hearing me and Johnny.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
Maybe it's not everybody else. I know, it's a learned behavior.
It's like you, they mirror you.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
See.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
You end up seeing yourself in what they do, and
maybe more so with the driving when they start taking
on adult things, you see how they handle them.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
He also likes to talk himself through well, you know,
because I know when a turn is coming up and
he'll say okay a second and a half before the turn,
turned the indicator on, and nice talking his way through
everything that he's learned. And it's like, oh good, I
hope this lasts.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
This is fabulous to hear Sam, because I you know you,
you know your child, and you've said, yeah, this him
learning to drive has made you especially nervous because he's
he's very easily distracted and a confident. You know, he
has a confident way. But it does sound like he's
learned it. It sounds like he's learning.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
In this first trip, he was very at times, I thought,
over confident, chatty Cathy, you know, and it's like pay
attention to the road. At one point his phone went off,
you know, a snap I heard, and I look at
him like, I don't even think of it, and he wasn't.
He was just staring straight ahead. He probably didn't even
hear it.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yeah, no one can do that. No one can do that.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
I did take out my camera, but because I wanted
to get one of those look who's driving pictures, you know,
like every parent. He goes, hey, I got an idea.
How about I just do two thumbs up while we're driving.
I was like, and what does that mean? He goes, oh, yeah,
take my hands off the wheel. It's probably not a
good idea. Huh. I was like, no, it's not a
good idea.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
So he just made creatively. It's cute.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
He made a funny face. And that's the one we
took from mom.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
I hope you took that while you were stopped.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Oh yeah, sure.
