Speaker 1 (00:02):
Jody. I hate to break this to you, but Sam's
taking over the not so serious book cluse.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Yeah, totally fine with me. He started telling me stories
about this and this sounds really good.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Yeah. It's Willie Nelson's autobiography. It's called It's a Long Story.
I like it because he takes a lot of time
to tell you the songs behind some of the stories,
the stories behind a lot of the songs, right that
you like on the Road Again. Yeah. This was from
the movie Honeysuckle Rose, which he was in. He said
he was on the plane headed out to California to
(00:31):
shoot it and the producer told him, like, look, man,
we need a song for the movie. You know, some
kind of road song. He goes, you mean, like on
the road again, going places that have never been Yeah,
And they said, well, what's the melody? He goes, I
don't know. I'll let you know when I get it,
And he took out an airsick bag and he wrote
the lyrics on the airsick bag and by the time
he landed, boom, he's got a number one hit.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah. I know you. You would expect a million stories
from this man, and just so casual.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
I don't know if you've ever seen him in concert.
But he doesn't talk. He just plays. He'll say, here's
another song, here's not a great one.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Boom, And he plays and plays and plays and play.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
And he tells you why he does that. He doesn't
do all the chit chat in between songs. Let me
tell you. You want to read the book school tell us? Okay, Well,
he says it's because the people want to hear the music.
Somebody else. He modeled himself after that. When he watched
them in concert, he goes, that's the way I like
a concert. Give me the hits and keep playing. But
(01:24):
it's funny. At his age, I think that people would
want to hear some of the stories. He's very religious.
He's taught Sunday school for years, believe it or not.
Oh yeah, he's got a mama papa upbringing. Yeah, you've
got to read that that part. Oh. My favorite song
by Willie this song Redheaded Stranger Strange from Blue Rock, Monta.
(01:45):
It's not one of his. He didn't write it. Town
and I've always thought, you know what an awesome songs
about a cowboy who lost his love, comes to town
with her horse, and some woman tries to steal her horse,
and he shoots her dead. He he used to sing
this song as a lullaby to his kids, of course
he did. Yeah, and he's like, I always sung it
as a lullaby. I know it's a song about shooting
(02:05):
a woman, but it's a lullaby and his kids grew
up on it that way, and so he later on
he put it on one of his albums. But it's
a great autobiography. It's not a hard read. All the
stories are great. Tells you all about the irs troubles too.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Yeah, it makes me. It's excited to see you this
excited about reading what.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
I'm glad I read a story. I'm glad I picked that.
It was either that or Bruce Springsteen. I went with Willie.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
What is the book called again?
Speaker 1 (02:27):
It's a long story? All right?
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Check out Willie Nelson's It's a Long Story and Are
Not So Serious book Club at Murphysaman Jody dot com.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
And he's still touring right at eighty three years old. Unbelievable.
That's amazing, cry so pretty.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Ah, we need that in the morning.
