Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy Salmon Jody after the show podcast, Guys, I.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Was asked to do something I think that's very important
for someone. In fact, the more I dig into this project,
the more I think they should have asked you, Murphy.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
But is that coronavirus related?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
No, it's not. It was actually before we were staying
at home so much so I've been procrastinating and I've
got to get it done this week. Someone very near
and dear to us. Her name is Caroline Murphy. I
know you know I'm talking about. She is a family friend.
She's the daughter of some family friends and babysat our
kids when they were little. She's a lovely human being

(00:38):
and in our times together doing radiothons for Children's hospital
and all that, she would babysit and help us. And
I remember telling her years ago, man, you would make
a great childlife specialist. She's one of these people who's
great with children. Yeah, she was so great with our children.
There were times I wanted to call her and go,
can you come over and just help me I'm having

(00:59):
a night.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
I never did that.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Childlife specialist is someone who works at a children's hospital
who especially trained to be there for the child. Let's see,
let's say your child is life flighted to a hospital
under a horrible accident, circumstance or something. They arrive instead
of just a scary situation with a medical team bringing
them in and putting them on a stretcher or whatever,

(01:21):
someone comes out to meet them with a Teddy bear
to hold their hands since time. My name is Caroline,
and I'm going to be your friend while you're here.
That's what a childlife specialist does.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
It's almost like a nurse for mental.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Health, yes, for children, and they are so incredible. Like
the few times, a couple of times that our kids
were in the hospital, I can remember the Phoebe situation
especially thank God for the childlife specialist because I was
just stressed to the max. You know, Phoebe was a

(01:52):
little kid quarantined in a hospital room and a childlife
special specialists would come in and do puzzles with her
and blow bubbles with her and just gave her a
little bit of childhood, a little happiness while we were
all stressed out. It's just an incredible calling, but there's
a long road to become one.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Well.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Caroline has finished with college, she has a degree in
a degree in child and family studies, and she wants
to pursue this cool so her next steps would be
like this big internship and this big program that she
has to be invited into to learn more. She's been
volunteering out a children's hospital, so she's ready. So she

(02:33):
asked me if I would write a letter of recommendation
for her. Now do you see why I'm.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Nervous, just because her future is on the line.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
I'm not the letter writer here.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Murphy is the corporate letter.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Can I get in the middle of this. I don't
want to get in the middle of this. If Murphy
writes the letter, it's going to come off sounding like
you said, corporate letter sounding. I think, Hey, I can
write from the heart too. I know I've seen I've got,
you know what, Murphy all but the little thank you
notes I've gotten for Murphy over the years, I still
have them all. Yes, Look, he doesn't write this way

(03:13):
all the time, but I think something like this is
probably a better jokey thing. I guess, you know.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
So, I'm nervous about it, but I've got to get
it done because I've been procrastinating it. You know, I
feel like I'm not a very serious person. I know
that I have whatever I'm deep in ways, but you
know what i mean when it comes to this sort
of thing, I'm not equipped.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
How many times can you use the word really?

Speaker 1 (03:36):
You know what?

Speaker 2 (03:39):
So, but she sent me a very detailed packet, you know,
with her resume and what the next steps need to be.
And so I'm writing one letter, signing it and making
fifteen copies. It's for a different place, right for her
to send off to. So I did some research, Murphy.
You should know about how to do a personal recommendation letter, Like,

(04:02):
what's you want to hear it?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Yeah, sure.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
One thing is to explain how you know the person,
focus on one or two traits about them that would
make them a good fit for the job. And I've
got that down because, like I said, I wanted her
at my house on crazy nights. She's wonderful with children,
Remain positive, share contact information, and follow submission guidelines. That's
where I'm nervous, because there's a lot of guidelines.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Because you want to do what you want, well you.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Know me, Yeah, but I'm nervous. But I'm telling you,
today is the day I'm going to write the letter.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Yeah, but you will do fine, you know, because everything
that you do comes from a real place. What you
should probably do is write down all the things that
you want to do express first, right, then come back
and you know, put it in the form that they
want to see in these formuls exactly.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Well, I did start making some notes in my own way,
you know how. I am just I'm I'm I'm not
with God. I'm not a guidelines person. I just say
what comes to my brain. And you can't write a
letter that way. It would be like a hot mess.
So I did write some notes of things that I
want to express about her, and then I'm going to
put them in letter form.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Good.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
So this is going to take me the better a
part of an afternoon to get it right, because I
want it to be so right, because I really do
believe of all the people I've ever met, she is
destined to do this and I would like to help
be a part of that if I possibly could.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yeah, yeah, you will do fine with that. What's weirdout?
Little projects like that, or at least this happens to me.
We move so fast and we have so many things
to do now that sometimes you feel like you're putting
too much time into something when really that's the amount
of time it would take if you were really sitting
down and writing a well thought out letter about somebody
who's very special to you that you want to get

(05:44):
the job, then if it takes an hour and a
half to write it, that's what it takes, right, I mean,
there's no wrong way to do that. I mean I've
just thrown out a number there. What I'm saying is
we feel like everything has to be done in three
minute increments. Now you know.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Now it's a sickness.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
That's what's wrong with that us, right.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Anyway? I do, I hope. I you know, I'm just nervous.
You understand what I'm saying. I don't. I'm nervous about
me being the one that she's trusting this with. But
I will give it my all.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
So even if it's an hour and a half, even
if it's an hour and.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
A half I missed any part of the show.
