Speaker 1 (00:00):
So I got this text message Robin from my mate Tomo,
who I went to high school with. It's one of
my close mates. We sort of had our four or
five best friends. Tomo was one of those. Yeah, and
he said, just driving down to Brisbane, heard what you share.
This was my letter to my thirteen year old self.
And he said, good on you, mate. I always hoped
I was a good friend, letting you know that you
could do everything anything. You were always the popular one

(00:20):
that I wanted to be. Dave was a good guitar player,
but he always wanted to be like Owen. And sorry
that Nat didn't reciprocate your love. He says, you're a
top bloke. I wish we'd kept in touch more after
you left.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Oh my goodness, did you know that?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
No?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
I didn't. No, I didn't know that at all. And
doesn't that just show you even further these things that
you have in your mind as a teenager. You think
this is how it works, and you have no idea
that someone else is looking up to you.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Wow. So was that what you were thinking when you
were listening to the letter as you were driving.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Down, Yeah, definitely. I just it just took me back
to those memories of just hanging out together as mates
and also just thinking, like I was just visualizing it,
and then it just became so overwhelming and so I
had to pull over because I was crying. So just
talking back to that place and yeah, just I just
couldn't believe it. The Kip, out of all people, was

(01:13):
really wrestling with that. I just loved the guy. So
it was just a top bloke. So it was really
interesting just to hear it.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Tomo, by the way, was my sporting idol at school.
Tom I was so good. Everything was so fast, he
was huge, he was strong, powerful out everything.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, I tried, Okay, what made you cry out of that?

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Look? For me, I think as I'm getting older, I'm
becoming more emotional in terms of my sensitivity. I used
to try and shut it down and suppress it, but
now I'm really embracing it because I'm a counselor myself,
and I see a lot of young men and I
want them to actually embrace this, not suppress it. So
hearing Kip's story really brought back that sense of you know,

(01:55):
young men today in schools and they're really wrestling with
this stuff now. And I think they need to hear
this example of older men. And there's stories when they
were younger, and I think they missed the stories. And
I think it was just that that I really connected with.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
So all these people looked up to Kip and he didn't.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Know well that's yeah. He was always fun and he
was always energetic and he made people laugh and I
think people love that. That's all we wanted to be.
We wanted to be like that. So there's no accident
that he's landed in radio, you know, helping other people
in life. It's just wonderful.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
How is Kip with girls at school?

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Look, he's a lover, right, He's a lover, a fighter,
and he just loved people. And that was one of
our great friends. And he just got along with girls
all the time. I always thought he had it all
together in that sense, you know, and they just sort
of loved on him.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
But did I fall in love? Oh my goodness, I'd
fall in love. Had all the time at a co
ed school. It's a nightmare. Did you tell you that
no one knew I was young?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Idea? Yeah, well I kind of figured it out. Who cares?

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Do you know?

Speaker 2 (03:06):
What it makes me think? And you know, like I'm
a dreamer, not a realist. Imagine we spoke to this
young guy called Jack, and he was struggling, and he's
only nine, And I think, imagine if you've got kids
in his class to tell him all the stuff you're
saying about each other. Now, Like, imagine if we could
actually get kids to write a positive letter about their

(03:26):
own classmates.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yeah, it'd be a revelation, wouldn't it. Yeah?

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Well that's it, isn't it. And I think they often
hold back because of that idea of if I stand out,
someone's going to teach me about it. And I think
that's what a lot of the kids I see nearly
every day don't want to reveal that truth because what
if it comes back and it bites me? You know,
I then get ridiculed or joked about. It.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Can't be anonymous, like you know you say, okay, class,
I want you to say something great about each person
in your class and something you really admire about them.
And you don't have to sign your name. But imagine
picking out of a box and going, oh my god,
someone in this class, thanks Simon an awesome runner, or
someone in the class love it.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
That's a good idea.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Could you come to our school and top.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Program.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
I've had three sons and a lot of trauma, so
I've had to come up with some creative stuff in
my time.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
That's all. That's awesome. Yes, yeah, I love it.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Can we say what school?

Speaker 3 (04:23):
I love the idea?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Can we say what school you're canceling at?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
River Mountain College College? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Down at Yatler in Yatler, very lucky kids.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yeah. Yeah, it's wonderful.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Well, thanks for getting on this morning. Thanks for sharing
with us, Tom, I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
No, no worries, mate, Really good to hear you and
good to talk to you.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Touch you too?

Speaker 3 (04:40):
All right?

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah, he's great.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
You need to catch up, you know. I know I'm
going to keep you to that. Like in a month's time,
I'm going to say, have you spoken to Tom?

Speaker 3 (04:52):
All right?

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yes, I'll get I should get like the all four
of us together, the boys. Maybe we'll go to Calandra
and go camping again.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Sure? Could I just hear the winging

Speaker 3 (05:04):
That got sand on my pillow
