Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, we had nine year old Jack on the show

(00:01):
yesterday who very bravely a month ago was telling us
about his own body confidence issues. Amazing kid. And this
is the update from yesterday. When I saw you last time,
you were saying that there was a new kid moving
in across the road. So he's there and you've got
a soccer mate.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Now, yeah, I played with him like every day.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yeah. How are you feeling about everything? Mate? You know
how you feel when you look in the mirror.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
I feel better about both them. Now, why has it
changed because I've been playing a.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Lot more soccer when you're just feeling fitter and stronger.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah, So what would be your message to other kids to.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Believe in yourself, to try hard, you got to work hard.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Well, really, it's just believe in yourself. So how do
we get more than just Jack to believe in himself?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Is the question?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Well, you've got an idea.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yes, And in order to put that idea into action,
needed to get my old mate Craig Thomas, who's now
a guidance counselor at school. He's one of my best
mates from high school.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
This is the guy you hadn't spoken to for thirty years.
And you put you back in touch.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
Yes, exactly, now you're utilizing him for or you're radio
great idea.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Exactly, well done, Thank you morning, tom mate, it's how
are you mate? Good? Good? You heard a little bit
about chat with Jack and how he's feeling.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Now, Yes, I did. I did.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
And when you hear a young man like Jack, like
particularly where he started and the way he felt about
his self image, like is that unusual or like have
you heard stuff like that? Often?

Speaker 3 (01:21):
It is something that I have dealt with, but it's
not as it doesn't seem to be as familiar, or
if it does come up, it's more of it's a
really hush hush topic, like you don't talk about that's
the taboo kind of thing. But yeah, you do hear
about that every now and then.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
It was interesting a couple of things he mentioned. One
of them that was big was that he's now got
a mate across the street who's in the same stuff
he's into and that's just been a massive game changer.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, I think that was That's what does it for people.
I think, you know, like Jack completely changed his motivation
to life, and I think that's what it's about. Having
great mates really really helpful.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Another thing that I reckon was that I noticed what
I was talking to him, Tomo, was that when we
start kicking the ball. As soon as we started doing that,
he opened right up and was just so much more
likely to chat. Is that something you've noticed in your profession?

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, So I think for me working with
young guys, I tend to go out and kick the
football with him or past the footy or I do
tend to do that because I find talk therapy only
goes so far. And maybe with young guys in particular,
going out and kick the forty like you exactly what
you did, certainly opens up the opportunity. But I think

(02:33):
you were at his house, and I think maybe you
know at a personal level as opposed to maybe at
school where you have a facade.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Yes, that's a bit tricky, Yeah, because I was thinking
it'd be great if we could find some way and
have some type of facility where we could just go
set aside a time ago, let's just go and kick
and chat and see what comes out of it. Absolutely,
and do you reckon it could work in schools, Craig
or like does it need to be Do you reckon
it's more of a private at home thing.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
What do you reckon, I'd love to give that a crack.
I think it's just different when it's at home, that's all.
School's just such a different machines. It's all education, and
so it's very much if we can utilize that space,
I reckon that'd be wonderful. I'd be happy to give
it a go.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Yeah, the goals would be great for everyone to just
be able to set it up wherever they are, and
you know, you don't have to go to school to
do it, but it'd be cool to even try it
out at a school like it was as well, just
to just to see how it works, see if it rolls,
and see if it's something that has any traction.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
I would love to give it a go. Yeah. I
think a lot of a lot of boys tend to Hey,
if I can get out of class, I'll come true.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
What about the BA space, Like what about year eleven
and twelve's helping the eight nine year olds? Like if
there was you know, if we're talking like a kick
and chat, which is what you're talking about. I mean,
it's such a scary space because kids can be so cruel.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, I absolutely believe in that peer of support and
that having a mentor. I think it does work in
a school context. Absolutely, I think that'd be fantastic.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
And tell me what about because you know we're all
coming off the high of the matildas with this work
for the girls as well? Because we've been talking mostly
about boys.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah, I think it might work for girls as well,
but I think they just do it maybe a little
bit differently at times, or some girls we have.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
A lot of words.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
I haven't noticed. But if I was able to lay
down the rules for the game, because it works that
it's also you can be competitive while you're while you're
having your chat. So if I could work out like
how to put together a little board so we could
have like a kick and chat session, and then maybe
doing something at your school and seeing if there's any
kids that want to actually come and can have a chat.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Absolutely, absolutely, yeah, that'd be fantastic.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
And then if it works, other schools can.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Get involved exactly exactly why not?

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Why not love it?

Speaker 2 (04:47):
And then finally you two will actually get back together.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Do you know what, Robin, we're planning it because Craig's
got a place at Warwick out in the bush and
we're going to go and have a weekend. They we're
going to take Raffie apparently this bikes. It's going to
be unreal.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
You had me a cord bike.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Now. Also, this afternoon, I'm going out to see Jack again.
We're going out for another kick, just see how things are.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Because he's got so much better with his mate across
the road.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
I know he wants a rematch.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Okay, kick and chat. Okay, you know what you have
to do.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
No, I don't think I should throw it. I think
it'll be more important to him if he wins it legitimately.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Okay, so what are you going to do to make
that happen.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
I'm just gonna well, we'll have to. We'll rematch until
he finally gets a win. But I'm going out there
and I'm going to try my.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Best to be there again. Of course, there's nothing worse
than the sympathy win.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
No, exactly, No, No.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
It's a smart kid.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
And I'm going to get the measurements for the for
the little board as well, So we'll put together the
kick and chat board and watch this space. Kiss ninety
seven three
