Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is time now to check Steve's voicemails. Eight seven
seven twenty nine. Steve, you can call if you want
to leave Steve a message. You might just hear your
call on the air. This one's from Robert Steve. He
left a comment about Trump Trump.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Was burning really burning my butt.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Man.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
They going after Donald Trump for this, you know, family
matter of something with him and his wife, personal matter,
when they should be going after his ass for treason
when you many times was mayored riot at the Capitol.
I'm sorry she using my language anytime you do something
person like that at the Capitol. Builder, that's treating man

(00:35):
using my language for you hard whichever Brady warnings, love
your show, Lay.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
Yeah, I understand what you said. But what that this
house money trial is not a personal matter, right. This
money was used an illegal payment to affect the election
this campaign, and this money was used. He made this
payment to Michael Cohen while he was president and wrote

(00:59):
the check for I'm the White House for a personal
met All that stuff is illegal. He's done so much
illegal stuff. We just live in a corrupt, immoral society.
If this were anybody else, let me explain something to
y'all point blank. If this was Barack Obama, Yes, sir,
do you know how this would be going? Yes, And

(01:20):
nobody would be accepting of it, Republicans or Democrats. He
would be held to another set of standards, the one
that Donald Trump is supposed to be held to. This
man is hijacking the democracy.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
He is fighting.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Against elections that is democracy, the same thing your constitution
and y'all forefathers came up with. He is the very
person that's going against all of that, and y'all letting
him do it, and y'all letting him hijack y'all's democracy.
We're not a part of your democracy anyway, never have been.

(01:58):
All you gotta do is look at the prison systems.
It don't work that way for us, but it seems
to work that way for him. But I bet it
wouldn't work that no other way for any black person,
any black person anywhere, or ninety one damn indictments and
running for the White House. A job at the White House,

(02:19):
you get one indictment, Your ads won't get a job
at Chuck E Cheese nowhere, And you pay one hundred
and thirty thousand dollars to a porno star out of
your You ain't getting in the White House, you ain't
even getting back in your house. But he is allowed
to do all of this. Now, this is crazy. This
is crazy. America can miss me on this one because

(02:40):
I don't really care what they do after this. I'm
not listening to him no more because y'all just letting
this man hijack the whole democracy, the government, everything, you believe,
everything he say with his lying ass I mean, this
is crazy. How you a common sense thinking person you
don't see him lying? You know why?

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Because you don't want to see him, they said, because.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
That's how you stole the country. You stolen America threw
from lying. It's all part of the cent. That's why
they cool with it, because it's just par for the
course for them and most people. If they could get
an airplane with their name on the side of it,
in the building with their names on top of and
they could do it the same way he did it,
they'll do it.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah. Well, moving on to our next call, Steve, remember
Anita Baker canceled her concert at the last minute in Atlanta,
and Tommy told us about the time Luther Vandross did
the same thing in Detroit. Well, Joanne left a message.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
Good morning to the whole crew.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
But this call is for Tommy.

Speaker 5 (03:40):
Tommy, I'm from Detroit. This is Joeyan from Detroit and
I was sitting in the Fox Theater that night when
Luther Vandross walked off that stage and just left us
sitting there like we were crazy. And we sat there
for a while, and then somebody came out and said
Luther said he was having problems with his throat, he
couldn't give us a good concert.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
And he'd be backing a day.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
And we all just still sat there looking crazy. Ban
was still sitting there and we were all like, I
think kidding, And then the lights came on. Well I
guess they're not kidding.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
It's time to go wrong.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
So I just want to let you know I was
there with you.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Tell me.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
So every time Luther came to Detroit, joe.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
An was there.

Speaker 5 (04:18):
Y'all all have a good day.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Told you. And it was the second note and it
didn't work. He was like, it's not working tonight and
just turned and walked off.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
That proves he's a perfectionist.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
He was.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
He was not going to give you a bad show.
That nothing happen.

Speaker 1 (04:37):

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
