(00:22):
I am sixty mister Mokelly here,We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app.
We have more information on California whatdirection we're moving On tonight's show, KFI
is own. Blake Trolley will joinus at the bottom of the hour and
he'll give us the latest on thecal State LA protests and what it's been
termed as extensive vandalism of the campus. He'll be calling in, and Disneyland
(00:46):
is cutting back on entertainment during peaksummer season. Say what in Paris twenty
twenty four Olympics, they're going todebut high level break dancing. I think
they missed their shot to have mein the Olympics. I still got some
moves. Mark Ronner, good evening, But yes, I still have some
(01:07):
moves. Nothing would please me morethan to see this nothing. I can
still do my swipes. I don'tknow if I can do my Thomas flair
anymore. That might be asking abit much. But there's not enough room
in the studio. Maybe we cando it in the hallway. Oh yeah,
in the bullpen area would be aperfect place. And none of those
words mean anything to me, justso you know, but I'm excited to
see this one way or the otherand as quickly as possible. I don't
know if I can still. I'mpretty sure I can still do my back
(01:29):
spin. I have to do that, probably in the kitchen, because it's
I need something that can actually spinon. That's the only place where there's
the linoleum here. What's the onewhere you spin around on your head.
That's called a headspin. Yeah,I'm gonna need to see that. No
no, no, no, no, no, no nude. No no,
I didn't do that when I wasa kid break dancing. Why not
because my mother said, don't dothat because it's dangerous. No no,
no, no no. Those arethe compulsory moves. The Russians will mark
(01:52):
your way down if you don't dothose, well, the highest and lowest
scores are thrown out, don't youknow. No, no, no,
I need to see that heads, you know. But I guess I'll do
some breakdancing in the kitchen, justbecause I need to prove to myself that
I shouldn't be doing it anymore.Just go to a commercial right now so
that we can go look at this. No, ten years ago, I
did it in the studio as adare from Wayne Resnick, and there's video
(02:15):
of it floating around somewhere. Soyeah, how about yeah, we got
to do that. We'll do thatduring the break. I'll go in the
kitchen. I'll do some breakdancing movesto show you that I still don't got
it. Please anymore? Please?Yes, And we'll put it on Instagram
and every day we'll go live, well live, what if I get myself
(02:36):
into And there's so much more.First, let me just say good evening
to Walla. Sharp didn't have achance to say hello to you. Did
you notice was the traffic even betterfor you today? It was really good
for me yesterday and today people areout of school. I don't know,
maybe they're just trying to avoid me. Maybe it's just my lucky day.
But it was a lot easier gettinghere. It was easy in the morning
getting here. No, there wassome type of accident or something on the
(02:58):
one eighteen connecting the Vibe to theonce evident, and it was horrible getting
here. Yeah. Yeah, Ihad to give somebody both barrels on the
way in. You gave them adouble finger salute both barrels that is usually
reserved for the highest epistivity. Iwas trying to register my disapproval of somebody
driving dangerously and obnoxiously, and Idon't think they got the message completely.
(03:21):
Okay, look I used to getmad at that stuff. But Mark,
you just have to let them goon ahead, because if they're driving dangerously,
they're already demonstrating to you that they'renot thinking clearly. They're not thinking
about anyone's safety much less yours.Let you go on by, and you
want me to put the makers inMetropolol out of business while I'm at it.
All I want you to do ismake it here safely, Mark Ronner,
(03:44):
Okay, I just want you toget here safely. And if you're
double birding people, I mean look, oh wait, it wasn't just the
double bird. It was the threeD SCTV double bird in out. Yeah
yeah, okay, but the problemwith that is that means neither hand is
on the wheel. And I wantyou to be safe. I was about
(04:05):
as safe as that. I wassafer doing that than I was being cut
off by this terrible human being. All right, Okay, so let's see
this to this logical conclusion. Ifthis crazy person cuts you off in this
dangerous maneuver, and you double birdedthat person. This is not even hypothetical
because that's what you did. What'sthe likelihood that that person's just going to
(04:25):
keep on driving? What if theyslow down? Listen. Once you stop
raging against things that are unjust, you're dead inside. I just don't want
to be dead inside. I don'twant you to be dead outside. That's
what that guy was trying to doto me. Make me dead outside.
I feel like I'm talking to oneof my sons. It's just just not
hearing me. My job is tomake sure you get home or to work
safely. That's it, Okay,Dad? Can I have my allowance now?
(04:47):
No, go to your damn room. Man. I need you to
go and think about your life andtalk about what you Look at my browser
history, Dad, back to me, what does that leave us to do?
Look, I just want you tobe safe out there. Mark.
I used to be you, okay, and I used to look for an
excuse to cut someone out and darethem to pull me overs. I'm just
(05:08):
I want more peace in my life, and part of that is making sure
that the people around me are safe. I love you too, Dad,
No, you don't. But Father'sDay is coming up. What do you
get to get me? Not ablank thing? Can you feel the love
tonight? And on the ones andtwo's Robin? How you doing this evening?
Robin? When was the last timeyou did some uber driving? You
(05:31):
have to think out loud. Ithink it was we Hope Pride. Actually,
oh so you were working? Didyou make good money because it was
Pride? Yeah, I mean itwas like after all Pride and everything happened,
it was just like everyone was drinking. Because did you have like crazy
half clothed people who would get inyour car? No? Surprisingly, No,
(05:57):
Oh but you did expect that.Yeah, like I have, I
have sea covers. Ooh what hourswere you driving? Was it late at
night? Yeah? It was likeright after this, after the show.
Oh so you were working the showand then started driving. That's a lot
of work. Yep. I usuallydrive like five hours after working a six
(06:24):
hour shift, seven hour shift.Yeah. Yeah, And she insists she
hasn't seen Taxi Driver. You're livingit. I don't think she cares about
any movie before two thousand and seven. I think this is relevant to your
life. What's the oldest movie thatyou've seen that you loved? Robin,
(06:44):
And I assume that you're under theage of thirty. I am. I
am twenty nine. Okay, see, I'm a good judge. What's what
are there any old movies quote unquoteold movies that you like or love?
When was Taxi? Taxi Driver? No Taxi? That's you're talking about the
TV show. Oh, oh mygosh, I thought you was something like
the TV jim Oh my gosh. That I just like and I can understand
(07:12):
that. But do you know thathorrible right? That movie was horrible?
I actually liked it. Oh wow, that's a lot of Queen Latina love.
That's that's that's a lot of loveto overlook that movie. That was
back when Jimmy Fallon was a failureas an entertainer as opposed to now there
we go, Rocky horror picture show. That was way before I was born.
(07:36):
But I love that movie. Okay, all right, you saved yourself
at the end there. But thatmovie. Can you sing any of any
of the songs other than time Warp? No? You don't want to hear
me sing? No, actually wedo. That's the whole point. I'm
(07:57):
getting ready to break dance and youcan't sing. I need I need to
like five drinks. Okay, wedidn't say you're gonna get paid for We're
just gonna have to. You know, it's Later with Mo Kelly can if
I AM six forty were live everywhereon the iHeartRadio app. I'm gonna go,
U going to go break dance inthe kitchen. You're listening to Later
with Moe Kelly on demand from KFIAM six forty. Then I'm tired.
(08:24):
You need to explain to people whatthey missed that. Okay, if you're
just tuning in for some reason. As I was running down what we're going
to discuss on the show tonight, one story is to Paris twenty twenty four
Olympics. They're going to debut highlevel breakdancing, and I said, I
missed my shot. I should havebeen given the opportunity to try out.
(08:46):
I used to break dance back inthe mid nineteen eighties, which just happens
to be forty years ago. Nothinghas changed since then. So I said,
let me go into the kitchen, move out the tables and see what
I got left in the tank.Well, I'm here to tell you nothing,
absolutely nothing when it comes to breakdancing. Did an Instagram live to Wallace
(09:09):
putting it up right now. Laterwith mo Kelly on Instagram and at mister
mo Kelly producer Kiki. You tooka video, you saw it live.
I need to rest talk. Iwas very impressed with the breakdancing. You
say that you don't have anything leftand you that might, in your case,
be the last little bit. ThenI had left. You spent a
(09:33):
good while afterwards just playing on thefloor. But I was very impressed.
I could never do anything like that. Well, you know, you should
have seen in my youth. Actuallythere is a picture. There might be
some video flow around, but thereis a picture when I was break dancing
in high school as part of aschool assembly at South Towrent High School.
And that was nineteen eighty five. But those days are gone, nah,
(09:56):
but that was epic. Good you. I still have skills, though,
I could. I could see theformation, look your uprock into you know,
your groundwork. You had the flareaction of the back spin. I
could see the beginnings of it.I could see even even you how you
were getting into it. I cansee. I was tempted to try my
egg roll. I said, no, what is that is that? Where
(10:18):
you sit there and consume an eggroll role. It's like you're spinning around
and your legs are in a Vand you're moving in a circle. Up.
By the way, we just passedthe fortieth anniversary of the movie Beat
Street. That was June eighth, nineteen eighty four, one of the greatest
movies of all time. Of alltime, you're making me want to watch
Breaking two Electric Boom. No no, no, watch Breaking one? Not
(10:41):
too? Do not watch two ElectricBugaloo? No no, no, no,
no, yeah, Well that onlyhas the opposite effect. I'm sorry
to tell you this. So thenext time I want to act out anything
on the show Rundown, just remindme about this and I will think better
of it. That was so good, though, so much fun. It
was so much better in my mind. It was so much better in my
(11:03):
mind. In my mind, it'slike, how do this? How did
you do that? And I said, maybe I'll do with some swipes and
it didn't turn out the way. What kind of first aid facilities does the
building have here? There? Youknow it's on the walls, that little
box of band aids and and bandaids and kills and cardio paddle. No
(11:26):
no, no, no, nono, we don't have a different defibrillator.
All right. The most impressive partabout that whole thing was you did
it without any music to a commercialthat was playing overhead in the kitchen,
and all you could hear was yourlittle sneaker squeaks. It was like a
silent disco going. I can hearit in my mind. That's good.
(11:46):
No, I was very impressed. You're laughing at me, not with me.
Yeah, that was good, somuch fun. And you did it.
Look you talk about it, yoube about it. We did both.
You might have to do a secondvideo because I might want to improve
upon that. Oh yes please.Oh so now you're gonna root me on?
(12:11):
Yeah, yeah, don't sweat thepreposition, daddy, Oh just do
it. Look at the video wasup? Okay, so is it at
later with Mo Kelly. At misterKelly, I'm trying to relive my youth,
trying to do some of my breakdancingmoves. I can't quite do my
swipes anymore, and did a backspanfor about a half a spin. So
(12:35):
you can go ahead and judge me. Do your worst, like Mark Ronner,
just do your worst. No,No, I support you one hundred
percent. I mean literally, Imight have to wind up supporting you.
All right, So that was mychildhood. I used to break dance every
night in my teenage years. Ican't speak for Tuala. I know Mark
(12:58):
wasn't He hasn't even eaten, sohe doesn't know anything about that. I
know. Yeah, we used tobe out there. My crew actually had
a slab of cardboard that you couldfold up and we put uh linoleum tiled
pieces on it. We used togo to the Pasadena Post Office, like
right there in the lobby entrance andbe out there take it wherever. I
was not really good. I wasmore uh into pop and stuff, but
(13:22):
we like we had wait wait, wait, wait you know I pop lot
too. No, yes, no, I know. Look I suck because
I seek from you in the That'swhat we're gonna do, right, Okay.
Two, when we go back atthe end of this break, before
we talk to Blake Trolley, I'lldo some poplock and see you can see
I'm legit. You didn't know hestill got skills. Every break is going
(13:45):
to be a new dam style. You're laughing now, but see at the
end of this you're gonna say, wow, he really has some skills.
Yep. Yeah. So when wecome back, Blake Trolley will join us.
He will tell us about his dayat Kelson, LA. To be
serious for a moment, there wasanother round of demonstrations and occupying a campus
(14:05):
building. There was extensive vandalism. But I wanted to get someone who was
there who give us a and aan on the ground look at what happened,
whether any minds were changed, orwhether this is going to lead to
something bigger or some sort of escalation. So when we come back, we'll
talk to Blake Trolley and find outwhat happened at cal State LA today.
(14:28):
It's Later with mo Kelly. We'llbe going Instagram live in just a second
from the kitchen once again KFIM sixforty. We're live everywhere the iHeartRadio app.
You're listening to Later with Moe Kellyon demand from KFI AM six forty
and you know my now. ProPalestinian protesters took over the student Services building
at cal State LA today. Excuseme, starting yesterday, blocking off entrances
(14:52):
and exits in what university officials calledan unauthorized action. It has escalated from
there. There has been extend vandalism. From what has been published, camfies
owned Blake Trolley has information was onthe scene, Blake, how are you
doing this evening? What can youtell us at this point? Well,
I'm glad to know Abo that itis unauthorized to tip over golf carts on
(15:13):
cal State LA's campus just to createa barrier while you take over a building
on campus. I seen pictures ofthe graffiti. I've seen pictures of the
barricades, the trash, the campusfurniture which is being used. But what
did you see that may have notbeen publicized at this point. Oooh,
(15:35):
that's a really good question. Well, we publicized this earlier today, but
a lot of the material that wasused to create this barrier came from all
over campus, which you probably didn'tsee from the photos. Actually, i'll
pivot here for a second, whichyou probably didn't see from the photos was
that those umbrellas that were tipped over, those were not just umbrellas that they
(15:56):
used to create a barrier. Whatthose actually were were all one solid unit.
They were picnic tables that are scatteredacross campus, super heavy units.
By the way, those umbrellas aremade of metal, So there are these
metal umbrellas go that have a polethat goes down into a picnic bench that
has built in seats. That's whatthey were tipping over when they created those.
(16:22):
The portion of the barricade that wasmade with umbrellas. Otherwise, I
saw some takeout, some uneaten takeoutthat was that the front of the barrier.
And on top of that, wedid see some hard helmets and some
yellow and orange vests and we presumethat those came from a construction site that
we were told the protesters that stolensupply wood from on campus. But yeah,
(16:47):
what happened yesterday mo was there wasthere's a camp that's been on campus
for about six weeks now forty days, and so far it's just been a
small group of students, although itis a large camp. I did post
video of this if anybody wants tolook at it, it's on my Twitter
at Blake Trolley. But there's beena camp for about six weeks on this
campus, and yesterday school officials saythat people started joining the camp. People
(17:12):
who were not at the camp beforestarted heading over to the camp joining it,
and at that point things really startedto ramp up. These students made
their way across the quad. Itwas about a two hundred yard walk over
to the student services building. Theystarted developing this barricade. They then entered
the first two floors of that studentservices building, graefeeding the windows, damaging
(17:37):
the building. Meanwhile, fifty eightschool staff and administration were inside the building
and they were ordered to shelter inplace. Those students enter the building about
four pm. Police were able toescort most of these staff that administrators out
by six pm, but twelve didremain. And it sounds like they were
trying to negotiate with these pro Palestinianprotesters. We were told they were not
(18:03):
stuck in there, they stayed ontheir own accord, but that they were
trying to come to a peaceful resolution. I know that classes had been moved
online, but I'm not sure ofthe campus schedule. Are we postgraduation in
these are summer classes or are westill in the main school term. Yeah,
(18:23):
so they've had their graduation for thespring of twenty twenty four, so
these are summer classes. And therewere students showing up today. We actually
spoke with one student and he wasfirst and foremost. He was very confused
about the whole thing. He showedup only to have a bunch of the
local reporters of LA tell him thatclass had been moved online. He had
not gotten the memo yet. Thereare a few other students like that this
(18:45):
morning on campus, and you know, he was really frustrated with the whole
situation. He felt like these protesterswere being selfish and you know, disrupting
campus for everybody else. So hewas very unhappy to say the least.
Is this a coordinated effort? WhatI mean by that is is we know
(19:06):
that the demands include divestment, Weknow that there are are reticent to budge
on those demands, But do weknow if this is organized in any way
or is it just going day byday just being intransigent and seeing if that's
going to move the meter that makesany sense. My assessment of this whole
thing is that it is organized. If we walked back about a month,
(19:30):
these students were speaking, or thesestudents had some sort of meeting with campus
officials, and at that point intime, campus officials had green lit the
idea of becoming more transparent with howthe school invested its money. That said,
the school did not make any commitmentsto divest and it sounds like from
that period from at least what theprotesters are complaining about. They feel like
(19:51):
the school went quiet on them.Again, this is about a month ago.
Then you hear those reports, andwe heard this from school officials this
morning that a bunch of other protesters. So this camp has existed for forty
days, but a large number ofprotesters joined the camp yesterday and that's when
they headed to the building. Theychained themselves to each other and they said
(20:14):
that they would not budge until theschool president spoke with them. And keep
in mind that school president, theschool's president, her name is getting away
from me right now, but shewas on campus. The student services building
that they went into is the buildingshe works. And we're told she was
on campus and she left at aboutone am this morning, so she was
part of that contingent of school staffthat stayed on campus past one am trying
(20:41):
to speak with these with these protesters. President Benner and the STA jay ains
EANs. Is that yes, thatyeah, that was her. So she
was on campus, as was thepio actually the spokesperson for the school who
came out. He was actually partof the group that was there past one
am. So just speaking with himthis morning, it was it was he
(21:03):
had he had a long night becausehe was there till I don't know,
once fifteen one thirty in the morning. It sounds like he has some sort
of commute and he came back tocampus this morning and he was giving a
press conference at nine am. Weknow that the protesters are on a path
of escalation. They feel it's justified, but we know that they are on
a path of escalation, and weknow that this university, cal State LA
(21:26):
and other universities are treading lightly.I would say that they don't want to
have another UCLA situation. But dowe know how much time before Cal State
LA will resort to some sort oflaw enforcement solution and remove the protesters and
the encampments. Well, of coursethat was that question was lobbed at them
(21:47):
multiple times this morning during that pressconference, but they said that they were
not going to share any information onthat. On that front, that said,
I have to imagine that with thisescalation, the school's probably going to
move pretty quickly to remove this encampment. You know, we were there this
morning. I do want to pointthis out. We did try to speak
to people that were inside that encampmentwhen I showed up to the front of
(22:11):
this camp. It seems like therewas some sort of recruiting. There was
recruiting paperwork in the beginning, andit seems like they were open to speaking
with us when they didn't know Iwas a reporter. I'm a radio reporter,
so I don't look like a TVreporter. I showed up to the
front of it, and it lookedlike they were open to speaking with me.
Once I said I was with themedia, they essentially retreated in and
(22:33):
you know that was that they werenot open to speaking with the media.
I wouldn't necessarily say it was hostile, but it wasn't very friendly. And
I would imagine at this point, the you know, the campus is seeing
just the overall nature of the waythis camp is operating, that it's so
self contained. Now you've got thisescalation, I'd imagine the campus is going
to move pretty quickly to eradicate thiscamp. Well, late TROLLI thank you
(22:57):
so much for being there, gettingeyes on the scene, and giving us
a perspective that we did not alreadyhave. Blake be safe out there,
and I'm quite sure we will checkin with you again as this story continues
to evolve. Hi. Thanks Bob, It's Later with mo Kelly. We
have a Disneyland update when we comeback KFI AM six forty. We're live
everywhere on the iHeartRadio app, andbe sure to go to at Later with
(23:19):
mo Kelly or at mister mo Kellyon Instagram and you can see me acting
all sorts of unusual and trying torelive my breakdancing and pop locking past of
nineteen eighty four. You're listening toLater with mo Kelly on demand from KFI
AM six forty. And Disneyland iscutting back on entertainment during the peak summer
(23:41):
season. Say what, why wouldDisneyland be cutting back or even canceling shows
during peak summer season. Well, that's what's happening. Disney California Adventure,
Let's Start There, has canceled twoshows and cutback performance on two more.
As Atmosphere entertainment continues to shrink atthat theme park heading into the busy Fourth
(24:07):
of July weekend to speak of summer, Disney California Adventure is trimming schedules in
July for the Warriors of Wakanda andAvengers Campus and the citizens of Buena Vista
Street along the park's main entrance Promenade. Disney California Adventure continually evaluates entertainment offerings
and makes adjustments. That's according toDisneyland officials. Both Warriors of Wakanda and
(24:32):
Citizens of Winnivista Street performed daily inJune, but they'll cut back their performances
in July and going forward. Idon't know why they would do that.
Of course, there's a monetary component. I'm sure they are making a calculation
that this saves money. But giveit. How often we hear about how
(24:52):
Disneyland has raised the price of this, the cost of that, the passes
and so forth. I didn't knowthat Disneyland the theme park had anything to
worry about in that regard. AndI know there has been this union fight
as of late with these performers, and maybe they are forecasting the financial impact
(25:14):
and so they are pulling back.I'm not saying that it's being done to
penalize performers, but I think theymight be making a calculation mathematically where they
don't want to put out more moneyover the summer months than they would have
before. That's just me on theoutside looking in, but someone who may
have a little more perspective than meis producer Keana who worked at Digitaland for
(25:38):
the past thirty four years. IfI'm not mistaken, If I'm not mistaken,
thirty four years more than I've beenalive. Well, you know,
he started in the womb plus tenyears. But when you saw this story,
was there anything which jumped out ofyou? Or is this just more
business as usual Disney the company justmaking adjustments and calculations for the summer.
(26:02):
It just feels like business as usual. I'm not surprised saying yeah, I'm
not surprised that they're doing more cuts, like they're coming back from what pre
COVID to that post COVID, likeso much has changed with from the cast
member's perspective of just you know, quality and everything, it felt cheaped out
(26:27):
and I would get yeah, andso it felt like we were cheaping off
the guests and the guests were noticingit. And you know, we're just
doing our job. We go towork, we go home it day to
day. But you know, we'rethere to make magic. We want to
see the guests happy. We wantto show the kids that, you know,
(26:51):
this is a magical place to havea great time. And so it's
it's not surprising that they're doing this, and it's really sad that they're doing
this for both the cast members andfor the guests that are paying so much
money to go to the parks forthe summer. When you see that they
are pulling back some twenty percent, does that mean that they wouldn't do a
night show or they would do fewershows. Are the cast members when you
(27:14):
were there, were they're being paidby the show or is it just a
six hour period in which they're supposedto be working. I think, from
what I can remember, and don'tlike super quote me on this, but
from what I can remember, thecharacter performers I think worked. They were
on a contract, so it wouldbe for whatever time that they were working.
(27:38):
Oh okay, But let's say they'resupposed to work six hours in a
given day. That could mean twoor three shows, yeah, throughout the
day. Okay, all right,I wanted so there has to be some
sort of cost benefit to doing fewershows. I don't know if it's a
saving of resources beyond the people performingnot. I was wonder if they were
(27:59):
paid by their performance or not.Was it just an hourly rate over the
period of time that they're supposed tobe at the park as far as I
could remember it, it's when theyare performing and in their costume that they
are getting paid. Again, don'ttotally quote me on that. I wasn't
an entertainment cast member at all.I was just one of the regular attractions,
(28:21):
hosts, costuming and quick service.I didn't really deal with that,
but from the areas that I workedand talking with other people, that's how
I saw it was working. Hey, Twala, you've were at Disneyland more
recently than any of us here. Was there anything that you noticed or felt
that Disneyland was pulling back on?One thing that I thought was interesting is
(28:45):
I felt the parade overall had fewerperformers. I think that the floats went
by, but all the performers thatwe usually see in between the floats,
there were fewer dancers and performers inbetween, and there were fewer performers on
the floats, Like there was justmain characters on floats, and in between
(29:06):
that you had just a few peopledancing, called people holding banners. But
it wasn't the grand spectacle that itwas before. So we saw it go
by, We're like, where arethe rest of the is this like any
parade is this like you know, just hey, we're just warm you up
for the parrey later on tonight.Because it just I didn't see as many
people in the parade. I wondermaybe because it was reported that we're paying
(29:30):
more attention to it. Maybe thisis something that they do most years,
and we're just more sensitive to itnow. But I think people are going
to be watching this, and sincewe're now aware of that, when we
do go to the park, goingto say, hey, this feels thinner,
this feels like we're not getting asmuch for our one hundred and twenty
dollars as we normally would. AndI currently have an annual pass, so
(29:51):
I go quite a few times myselfthroughout the year, and me and my
friend we love going during like thefestival seasons with food and wine and Christmas
and Halloween and everything or sorry, the holidays, the Festival of Holidays what
