Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug gottlie Show Years in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What Doug gotlib Show in the Bonus Fox Sports Radio,
I Heeart Radio app.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
What is good? What is up? How you doing? We
are coming off a night of college football, collage football.
Yummy you everyone that fun And it's one of those
things that the here's the part.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I started the radio show two days ago or yesterday whatever,
talk about how much I love college football, how american
it is.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
But part of it being American is like we.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Don't always make the best stuff, right, We got great ideas,
but really sometimes it's better when it's made somewhere else,
you know, and college football is the exact you know,
it's it's great in spirit.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
And then you're like.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Arizona State has like a two hour monsoon to lay
all right, stopping. You've heard this before, but Nebraska lose
a close game thirteen to ten, and you know, Utah
dominates Florida, but they did so a backup quarterback. So
it's just kind of you know, the quality of games
kind of eh. And I guess it doesn't catch up

(01:19):
to college football because people, you know, they do they
cheer for jerseys.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Let's gotta be honest about it, right.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
But.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
That was not the most esthetically pleasing night of football ever.
It's just fun to say we have college football because
there's nothing else on.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
I guess I would ask you there, Jay stew because
I watched both. I thought the Braves Dodger game was awesome.
I mean, big comeback from the Dodgers. They nearly pulled
it off. And I thought Mookie just missed, just missed
on a on a home run in the bottom of

(01:57):
the ninth inning. But it was much better play. But
and that in the side of the stadium had great energy.
But whether it's kickoff of college football or all of
our passion for the pageantry of it, there was really
good energy even if the quality of play wasn't great
last night.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
Yeah, I mean, if you're talking about last night's Dodger game,
that the that was a display at what of the
top four MVP candidates and the National League. They scored
fifteen total runs. Mookie and Akunya Acuna especially put on
a show. The energy in the ballpark for a Thursday night,

(02:38):
as always with the Dodgers, was incredible. So if that's uh,
the comparison you're making. Absolutely the energy was there.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
And the energy is there in college football. Just the
quality of play wasn't great. What wasn't great?

Speaker 2 (02:51):
But we got games last night, tonight, Saturday, Sunday, we
got some other games Monday, Like this is going to
be this is going to get some picks upcoming in it.
College football is back, and just remember you're going to
be overwhelmed by the pageantry and underwhelmed by the quality
of play, not just because they don't have preseason games,
not just because it's earlier and earlier in the year,

(03:12):
but also because most of these teams are adding in
guys that are playing right away that have never played
for their team, and so you don't have nearly the
vercipitous rate of guys repeating and playing at the same spot.
They're learning as they go, and it makes for a
kind of a clunky beginning.

Speaker 1 (03:28):

Let's Welcome in Jared Smith, Fox Sports Radio betting analyst
cost the show.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
This weekend. Fox Sports Traders countdown to Kickoff.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
It's Sam rich Orenberger Brian no Airs every Saturday nine
am to noon Eastern Time. Listen live on our Fox
Sports radio affiliates, the iHeartRadio app. It's all presented by
Bett MGM. Let's get to We'll get to the weekend
the second. We do have a decent slate tonight. Any
leans in tonight's games.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
Yeah, Hawaii was a big mover, especially after they played
last week and you know, looked pretty good covering against Sandy.
Don't really know what we're going to expect from Stanford offense,
their quarterback situation. Of course, the head coach Shaw's gone
and it's just a totally new regime now. But now
that the lines at three, Frankly, I would actually recommend
playing the other side at three. But I like the

(04:25):
Hawaii steam And if you've got a better number on
them earlier in the week, you're probably feeling pretty good
about yourself.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Okay, let's get to this weekend a ton of there's
like five big games, and I want to get all
your picks on.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
All of them. Let's start with the big noon game.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Okay, it's coach Prime, but he's got eighty six new players,
eighty six new dudes wild and they're taking on TCU, who,
of course played for National championship. But there's a lot
to replace there. Right the line is twenty and a half.
I'm looking at the over under is sixty three and
a half. What are your leans?

Speaker 4 (04:58):
Yeah, I mean this total is and bought up a
ton opened at fifty nine. I think at sixty fours
where we started to see a little bit of that
buyback to the under, and it makes sense. I think
it's really tough to price Colorado. We have no idea,
and the sportsbooks are in the same situation that a
lot of betters are because of all those transfers. It's
just really tough to quantify what their numbers should be.

(05:20):
The weather will be a factor in this game. It's
going to be brutally hot down in Fort Worth, and
I think that could play a factor. Maybe the defenses
were out a little bit down the stretch, but the
weak spot on this Colorado roster, even with all the transfers,
are still the offensive line, and I think that's really
where TCU can get into Colorado a little bit. This
is year two of Joe Gillespie's defensive coordinator. He plays

(05:41):
this three three five. Last year they were still kind
of figuring it out, and a lot of the defensive
numbers for TCU were really poor last year. They turned
it up down the stretch and then they ran into
the bus off of Georgia and they probably want to
get that bad taste out of their mouth. That was
the last game they played, just getting absolutely blitched by
the Bulldogs. They will be much more up defensively in
this game. I like Schador Sanders, a quarterback for Colorado.

(06:04):
Keep an eye on their true freshman running back Bill
and Edwards. They flipped him from Notre Dame. He's going
to be a stud. But you're asking a lot of
Colorado with a bad offensive line to go up against
the really I would say well positioned TCU defense, So
I think I would lay twenty and a half with
the horn Frogs here in.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
This game, West Virginia taking on Penn State. Penn State
feels like this is a year they could win win
the Big Ten. West Virginia good offensive line, but just
struggling to keep their coach employed. The line is twenty
and a half for Penn State. It's in, It's in
state college. The over under is the total is forty nine?

Speaker 3 (06:39):
What do you like?

Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah, the total has been bought down considerably from fifty
three and a half, and I would still say there's
room to the under here. I could see this closing underneath.
You know that relatively key total of forty nine. I
really like Penn State's defense. Many ds did a fantastic
job last year. I think Penn State might have a
top five defense in the country. Everything I hear from
camp have deep, talented, competitive hungry, and I do think

(07:05):
West Virginia is going to struggle to move it. Garrett
Green's a dual threat quarterback for the Mountaineers. Not a
lot of help around him. Top four pass catchers gone
from last year. I think their best receiver this year
might be the tight end they got from LSU Cole Taylor,
but again, a heavy dose of the run game, I
think for West Virginia. And on the other side, for
Penn State, they haven't even really named their starting quarterback yet.

(07:26):
We expect it to be Drew Aller. I don't know
what we're going to get, though, and I know that
there's not an outfit in the receiver room as there's
been in prior years. There's two alphas in the backfield though,
Singleton and Allen. I think they're going to rely on
those two heavily, and I think you're going to see
a lot of run game and great defense on the
other side for Penn State. So to me, under forty
nine makes a ton of sense.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
North Carolina South Carolina. Who do you like?

Speaker 4 (07:49):
Yeah, this is a tough game to call because you
really have two of the best. This is probably the
best quarterback matchup of the weekend with Drake May going
up against a rattler. But when you look at May,
I think he's gonna have an advantage with his legs.
South Carolina defense only returns four starters, no experience up front,
but UNC is probably gonna be without their best weapon,
tes Walker. They're still a waiting approval he transferred to

(08:11):
from Keen State. They don't know if he's gonna be
eligible yet. I don't know, frankly, and I don't think
he's going to be because they haven't heard anything this week.
On the other side, South Carolina brings in a new
Ocdalla Loggins. You probably remember him from the NFL, had
no success in the NFL. Titans, Bears, Dolphins, Jets. Just
everyone underperformed the year after he arrived, and I just
don't know what impact he's gonna have on Spencer Rattler.

(08:32):
The defense needs to get better for UNC too. They
were lasting the conference points for game yards per game
last year. I think gene Chizik will have a positive impact.
But to me, if you can get South Carolina plus three, dog,
I think that's where I would bet the game comes.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Let's go to the Sunday slate, right, you got Northwestern Rutgers,
by the way, that one, that one, that one's interesting
to me. We got LSU Florida State, which is the
big one that's in Tallahassee. The Noles are two point dogs,
and this is a great game going back to last year.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
Who do you like?

Speaker 4 (09:06):
Yeah, this is my favorite game of the week. And
what I'm seeing here in the market dog. Every time
this gets to three on Florida State, we are seeing
immediate buy and I don't think it will get back
to three. I think two to two and a half
is probably where this closes. Strength on strength in the trenches.
LSU's offensive line returns four starters last year, both starting

(09:26):
tackles Campbell and Jones were both true freshmen. That's the
first time LSU has had true freshman starting offensive tackles
bookends in the history of the program. So they get
all those guys back one hundred and two total career starts.
But or FSU's defense, I'll be honest, I think their
fs US defensive front might be a top five, top
ten county unit this year. They bring back two starters

(09:48):
and they had three impact transfers, all mac defensive lineman
Fiskey from Western Michigan. They brought in Jackson from Miami
and another kid from South Carolina. This is going to
be a really tough for jad and Daniels. Now last
year it was his first game against Florida State. Now
he's got a full season under his belt. I think
he's a lot more comfortable with Brian Kelly's offense. We're

(10:08):
hearing things in camp that he's being more aggressive and
he's not just going to take the low hanging fruit.
He's going to maybe push the ball down the field
a little more. And I think Daniel's run game is
really the X factor. On the other side, Jordan Travis
is a legit Heisman candidate, like top five, maybe even
top three quarterback in the country. The wide receiver group
is a lot deeper than bringing in a kid from

(10:29):
Michigan State kyok Holm, and he was all Big Ten.
Last year you got Johnny Wilson the Speeds. They're also back.
I think Mike Norvell is going to really, you know,
lick his chops with the weapons he has at his disposal.
For Florida State's offense this year, Alsi's defense lost a lot.
They've got a lot of talents and transfers coming in.
As you would expect, they're going to lie in the
linebackers States transfers in from Morgan State. I think he's

(10:49):
a you know, average in terms of what he brings,
but it's really the freshman. Last year it was an
all you know, basically an All American candidate, Harold Perkins,
who you know, graduates. Now he's a sophomore, you would
expect a lot more leadership out of him. I think
the LSU defense, especially in the secondary, is where Jordan
Travis I think can have an advantage in this game.
I'm betting Florida State. I would love to get three.

(11:10):
I'll probably still take two and a half and I
think I'll probably bet the money line.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
As well awesome stuff. It's Jared Smith in the case.
If you want to hear more of Jared and you can.
He's the co host of Fox Sports Radio's Countdown to
Kickoff with Rich Wrenberger and Brian nowadairs each Saturday between
nine and noon Eastern time. Listen live on our Fox
Sports Radio affiliates, the iHeartRadio app. It's presented by Bett MGM. Jared,
You're the best man. Appreciate you joining us.

Speaker 6 (11:33):
Go with Doug.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Be short to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Let's get to what the Fox says and now.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
Say.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
Here's Dan Patrick talking about the ACC's expansion.

Speaker 6 (11:52):
Sometimes less is more.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (11:56):
This might be a situation where more is actually less
for the AC. If you're Florida State or Clemson, are
you more likely to want to stay?

Speaker 7 (12:04):
Now?

Speaker 6 (12:05):
Certainly Florida State. Do you want to stay because Stanford
Call and SMU are here? Okay, SMU, I get now,
SMU is valuable. You want to be in Dallas, But
Stanford and Cow unless you love your Olympic sports, I
wouldn't have as much use for Stanford and cow Plus

(12:27):
you're talking about the West coast with the ACC. It
does go back to this game of geography. That's what
this is about. It's about geography. You want to have
schools in certain cities, certain states. That's why I still
think Florida state with the Big Ten is something that's
maybe on the back burner. You want to be in Florida,

(12:47):
you want to be in Texas, you want to be
in California. But if you're the ACC, being in California
in Palo Alto and Berkeley not the same as southern California.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
No, but it is the best in fact they can do.
There's pretty Quinn. He talked about the travel concerns cal
Stanford and the ACC.

Speaker 8 (13:04):
Given where they're located, their travel is going to be
greatly impacted, you know, having to go all the way
across the country all the time to be in that conference.
So it's it's really it's gonna be fascinating to see
how those schools and teams and players are impacted by
the travel. You know, Stanford Cal joining together all right,

(13:25):
that helps Solusia can play each other and you don't
have to travel for that one. And you hope acc
opponents will come out and be able to you know,
stay and play both of you, maybe for a series
of time. But it's that's the one thing when you
look at this sort of movement people were complaining about
the Big Ten. Look, the travel is not that bad.

(13:46):
You know where you're talking about going all the way
from San Francisco or San Jose, wherever you're flying from
all the way to Miami. All there's just some long,
long flights. That's where the majority of the AC is situated,
all on the East Coast, and that adds the extra
two to three hours to those flights. That becomes that
much more wearing, I think on the student athletes.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
Yeah, I mean like, look, honestly, the football and basketball teams.
Football teams are modestly affected. You're like no, like no,
I mean, like you got to get on a planet
lasts longer. And the one thing about the Northern California schools,
they were closer to everybody than you know, to La
to get to Seattle, LA, get to the Polue.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
It's a lot, but you know, pretty much pretty close.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
In terms of the Oregon schools, the LA schools, but
you're you're getting on a plane for any road game
in the Pac twelve outside of the Cow game. You're
at Stanford where it where it makes it impossible is
in the Olympic Sports. And that's, by the way, what
Stanford values as much as anything, which is their ability
to compete in volleyball, swimming, soccer, you name it. So

(14:54):
I'll be I'll be just see how it impacts that.
But you know, like you're just in survivor mode. And
in regards to Dan Pas, you're talking about Florida State
and Virginia Tech, like the money's just too great to
buy out.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Buy your way out of the media.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Deal just is And I don't know if you bring
these sixty million dollars.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
That you need to bring in order to so yeah,
I just you know, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
I just I kind of think this is one of
those deals where it really sucks. But at least Stanford
and Cal and now SMU, the big winners SMU big
winners SMU because they'd gotten left in the dust time
and again by the Big twelve. And you know, Baylor
and TCU didn't want them in and they basically bought

(15:40):
their way into the ACC and while you're sitting there
going wait a second. Now, they they they're not going
to collect any TV revenue for the first ten years.
It seems like that's a terrible loss. The problem is
they were just in the American Athletic Conference. They would
get like not even ten million dollars a year, which
is a lot of money to you and me to them,

(16:01):
as CMU is made of money, their boosters will make
it up and having accfos in their building will more
than make it up in terms of the attendance and
what they can charge for tickets. This is Keishawn Johnson
talking about Dion Sanders and is Colorado football team.

Speaker 9 (16:15):
He's already made the statement right by turning Colorado's program,
not all the way around, but again bringing the attention
to it.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
Now.

Speaker 9 (16:23):
The only thing you got to do at TCU is
keep it close. Now, obviously, he wants to win. We
know Dion very well. He wants to win the game,
and I'm not counting him out. But if you keep
it close, don't get run out of the building. Because
when you look at the makeup of the roster, and
I'm talking about the players, not the coaching staff, because
the coaching staff is probably, in my opinion just looking
at it, could be the best in the country.

Speaker 10 (16:43):
Man.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Like you know, now, the big thing is upfront. What's
going to be upfront?

Speaker 9 (16:48):
We know what they got on the perimeter and the
skilled position players. Do they have the beef, do they
have the defensive lineman? Do they have the offensive line
to be able to go up against TCU. They're going
to be motivated. I watched last night with Joe Klatt
his interview with Dion Sanders, and I'm sitting there and
I'm sitting there and I'm ready to run through a
wall for Primet because the motivation that he was speaking

(17:10):
of was just impeccable. It was at a whole nother
level about TCU. I'm not sitting there thinking I'm just
getting ready to run through them. And this is a
different team now, TCU is. It's not the same team
they played in the National Championship. They lost a lot
of players on that football team. So we'll see what happens.
I think Dion keeps it close, though.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
I do not think Deon keeps it close. And one
of the things that Kishan I don't think is taken
into account is TCU playing for a national championship. And
the way it works now in college football is they
were red hot across the board. They became an its
school and everybody's you know, the difference in fifteen twenty

(17:51):
years ago in transfers and now is you know, schools
that specialized in taking transfers, if they knew what they
were doing, could take the best ones. Now everybody takes transfers.
And when you're coming out playing for national championship and
you had, you know, you got a foothold way above
everybody else.

Speaker 3 (18:08):
I think TCU dominance dominates his game.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
And oh yeah, by the way, like Dion is gonna
make it or not make it at Colorado based.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
Upon whether or not Schadur can play. And if Shador
can't stay upright, that's not the fault of his own.
We may not know. That's what the FUX says. Say,
Let's find out who what's annoying Gaston.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
Stewart and now it's your annoy.

Speaker 5 (18:36):
We got viral video. Now, the video is a key
component here, and I encourage our listeners to watch it
because the audience that the coach is talking to speaks,
speaks loudly. He's talking to players as Jonathan Gannon, new
head coach of the Cardinals. He's talking to his players
in a recent after a recent practice for some film

(19:02):
that they're doing, some kind of video series. So this
is Jonathan Gannon talking to his team with the Cardinals.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
Welcome back.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
Who drove over here?

Speaker 4 (19:12):
When your hands? Who took the bus?

Speaker 6 (19:15):
Did you have fire in your gut?

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Did you?

Speaker 8 (19:19):
We're here for a reason.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
Don't get that twisted.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
We're here for a reason to win games.

Speaker 6 (19:26):
So if you didn't have that fire in your gut,
you better light the fire pretty fast.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
Be who you are.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
Just understand I'm looking for killers.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (19:37):
So this is being made fun of online right now.
But maybe the most annoying part of this is a
show of hands for who drove or who took the bus?
Has nothing to do with the rest of the motivational speech.
What did you find particularly annoying, Doug.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
Don't get it twisted. It's like, yeah, this guy, you
know this guy right here? This is the guy.

Speaker 3 (20:09):
Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
There's a lot that is annoying, mostly just it was
so uncomfortable.

Speaker 3 (20:15):
I think I might know.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
What I might find most annoying is somebody from the
Arizona Cardinals digital media team thought this was going to
be something that everybody wants to see exactly like, this
is out there by choice. This is not like a
secret video. This is out there by choice.

Speaker 5 (20:35):
It's the cutaways. Again. I think it's supposed to put
the Cardinals in good waite. The cutaways are the players
being utterly bored by whatever the coach is saying. So
even the editors didn't do this thing any any favors. So, Doug,
we've been talking about the running back situation this entire offseason,

(20:57):
and I'm calling up the quote the I had from
Derrick Henry that doesn't exist in sound so let me
uh okay, So here it is. Derrick Henry aims to
show the value of a running back position this year.
He just wants wants their fair share. This is his quote.
Have y'all witnessed it. I'm pretty sure y'all have, so yes.

(21:20):
It's just trying to show that we are valuable as
any other position. They use us in commercials and all
over the place, and we just want our share. Do
It's tough right now. The annoying part about this is
I think Dereck Henry, if I'm not mistaken, is compensated
very well and probably above the market.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
So it strikes me as the second high.

Speaker 5 (21:45):
It strikes me as a bit disingenuous. It's like I've
got my money, but I'm going to try to fake
like I'm trying to be in for the rest of
the running backs. Being in commercials has nothing to do
with anything. It's all about being replaceable and supplying demand.
But I thought this was the latest half hearted attempt
by running back to try to gain sympathy in this

(22:06):
whole thing.

Speaker 2 (22:08):
Oh I I completely agree with you there, And it's
just like.

Speaker 3 (22:14):
Oh boy, are we still talking about this? H Are
I still talk about this? It's annoying. What else?

Speaker 5 (22:19):
But they put they put them in commercial stock. So now,
Kelly Stafford, I know you were doing the herd and
on vacation and whatnot. But like Kelly Stafford obviously came
out late was it late last week maybe early this
week and said that her her husband Matthew, is having
problems relating to the young players, how they go right

(22:39):
from practice to their phones and he can't relate to them. Well,
she took all that back on our podcast yesterday.

Speaker 7 (22:46):
I spoke on a topic that I think it's relatable
to the fact that it's hard to relate to someone
who is ten years younger was and.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
Actually about it was a very relatable.

Speaker 7 (22:57):
Thing and it's and I do think that's entirely true.
But I'm not in an NFL locker room. I'm not
spending every day with these teammates. Obviously there's relationships. He
spends more time with them than he does with me.
During the season.

Speaker 1 (23:11):
That was tough.

Speaker 7 (23:12):
I say all the time, even my podcast probably not
the best if your wife's names in the media when
it comes to if it's talking about sports. And I
feeled pretty bad last week, but we're going to move forward,
you know, hopefully.

Speaker 5 (23:30):
So she put her foot in her mouth, is what
she said. The one person that hasn't spoke this week,
Doug Sean McVeigh addressed these comments, and he really downplayed them.
He said, I took him as kind of a joke.
The one person we haven't heard is Matthew Stafford. So
her saying this and kind of taking back forwards means

(23:51):
that he probably wasn't happy with what she said in
our previous podcast. And then so that's confusing because Sean
McVay was saying it was all a joke, So what's
the truth there.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
