welcome in. That's it, chief, Stink lines are awesome. Open
(00:51):
phone lines eight at eight. I'm kidding. It's eight seven
seven though, ninet nine on Fox Right, that is the
phone number. We never, well, we don't say never. We
rarely take phone calls. If you want to call, you can.
Maybe Jason answers, maybe he doesn't. I don't know, and
I don't care. What I do care about is we have.
We have at least a game in our back pocket,
(01:12):
which apparently apparently there's an asterisk by it, right, That's
what Tariko said. That was a weird one. Yes, you
heard from Dan Byer. Team USA lost in the semi
finals of the FOEBA World Cup. I'll tell you what
I think that means. I also there's this massive overreaction
and ridiculous reaction to a player named tz Walker from
(01:36):
North Carolina being ruled ineligible for this season to play
for the Heels. I'll tell you the reality of that
throughout the show. But let's dig in on the one
football game that we have Lions get to win. And look,
we can go through the things that didn't happen for
the Chiefs. The Kadarius Tony drops, not having Travis Kelce
(01:57):
in any conversation, the best tight end in football, not
having Chris Jones because he's in a holdout. We can
talk about all those are real things, But I mean
Juwan Taylor's lining up in the backfield. Interesting formation from
the Kansaity Chiefs. Apparently you can get four offensive linemen
and then kind of like a wing back there who's
twitching all the time. In Juwan Taylor. We've seen that
(02:18):
the Chiefs. It's pretty much known in the league that
the Chiefs at Arrowhead get away with grabbing and bear
hugging dudes. But last night was kind of embarrassing. So
there were some things that go in the Chiefs favor Lions,
win the game. Win the game. You're welcome on the picks.
By the way, although it was the under not the over,
and we told you when Kelsey went down and it
(02:40):
looked like Chris Jones wasn't gonna plays, it felt at
six it felt way too easy. Four and a half
still felt fairly easy. But man, it's hard to see
the Lions winning that game. Here's Dan Campbell addressing his
team after the game.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Because we built up way and everything we talk about
it was hot win down. We had to be patient. Man. Offense,
we go all the week out to score. Defense, we
need to take away. We come out at halftime we
get a huge takeaway. We told you, guys, we're built
for this. We can overcome anything as long as you
guys just hang with it. We got to sit on
(03:21):
the clean up when we get back, but until then,
enjoyed us.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Yea, and they should in fact enjoy it. Here's Dan
Campbell in his postgame press conference. I'm proud of.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Those guys and proud of the staff. I thought our
defense really showed up today and and what's encouraging is
in all three, Faise, we got so much to clean up.
You know that we'll only be better from But this
was step one. This is game one.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Here's Andy Reid when he was asked about playing without
Travis Kelce.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
That's something we talk about. It's closing games out. You know.
We we with our offensive line, uh and what we
have offensively, we need to be able to do that
and something that you know, we worked.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
A lot on situational football.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
But yeah, everybody knows the strength of our offense and
it's that old line.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Uh yeah. I mean like they don't actually have the
greatest skill position players in the world, but it still
kind of works for them. This is the Doug Gottlig
Show on Fox. Portrait. Here here's Andy Reid on coaching
without Travis Kelsey.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Just it just wasn't it wasn't feeling right. So I
wasn't gonna put him out there with that. And he
was honest with me, you know, we talked, so just
not enough time.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
There aw big a factor.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Do you think that was?
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yeah, And I wouldn't have no excuses at all. We've
got guys that can play. We're right there to take
care of business.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Okay, he offered it. He offered up no excuses, which
is fine. Off, you offer up no excuses, and uh,
none are in fact given. Pat Mahomes said, Uh, this
in regards to Cadarius Tony, who had three gigantic drops,
including one that led to a pick six. So you
say that Cadarius Tony after a game where it could
(05:04):
have swung a different way.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Yeah, I mean, I've I have trusted in Kat. He
missed a lot of training camp. Obviously he wanted to play,
and and five you have hard so he could play.
Stuff's not always gonna go your way. Obviously he wouldn't
want to catch a few of those in the game.
But I've trusted he's gonna be that guy that I
go to in those crucial moments and he's gonna make
the catch and and and and win us some seasons
like he did last year. So we're gonna continue to
(05:30):
work him in, get him more and more reps, and
I'm sure that those drops will kind of disappear.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Okay, so that that that's great leadership, and there is
some reality there where Kadarius Tony didn't play in the preseason.
He did rush back, so he probably hasn't had the reps.
And you know, all of a sudden, you get into
a spot where, you know, you get into a position
where that that ball is coming at your heart and heavy,
(05:56):
and you have a couple of bad drops. Bad drops.
Not the end of the world. Okay, not the end
of the world in any way for the Chiefs, but
it does put them a little bit behind the eight ball, right,
Let's just kind of call it like it is. The
Chiefs are gonna have some issues at left tackle. They
(06:18):
are still everybody's biggest game because they're the defending Super
Bowl champions. The next game they play and I know
they get some extra time and you'd assume Travis Kelcey
be back, and you think, Chris Jones, that's a pretty
strong negotiating tactic when your team doesn't put nearly as
much pressure in the quarterback as they want and their
best pass rusher is sitting over there. But they got
the Jags up coming next. The Jags nearly beat them
(06:40):
last year in the playoffs in Kansas City. It's going
to be a huge game for Jacksonville moving forward. Huge
Then the Bears, then the Jets on the road, then
the Vikings on the road. Three of the next four
on the road. And for a team that say what
you want about all their escapes on the in the playoffs,
you know they've in Kansas City because they keep winning
(07:01):
their division. Their division, They're gonna have a lot of
challenges with the Chargers. I learned a lot about as
I thought the Chiefs. They're not great outside of Kelsey
in terms of volume of quality wide receivers. Their offensive
line is an issue. Their defense is good, but let's
not act like it's not elite and that Jared Goff
(07:22):
is kind of picking you apart. He had some guys
open that he missed, and I walk away thinking, like
I thought previously, your faith and my faith in the
Chiefs really revolves around the fact that they have Andy Reid,
they have Pat Mahomes, and you don't. Otherwise It's not
an ordinary team, but it's a team made better because
(07:42):
of confidence, history, and coaching and quarterback than the actual
substance of the overall team. I'll also point out to
this to Dan Byer stug gottlieb Shaw on Fox Sports. Ready.
The show is brought to you by Progressive Insurance. Progressive

will point out that as much as I don't like
(08:04):
the Chiefs uniforms, they did that that Red Pops on TV.
I think my issue is with the pants. I think
the pants are just kind of average, but the red
and the red helmet stew pop on TV.
Speaker 6 (08:15):
Would be interesting to use your suggestion from yesterday and
use the yellow or the gold pants. I don't know
if that would be too much, too much of a shock.
Under the lights also helps.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
I think under the lights in late summer also helps.
It's a different look when it's you know, two degrees
out and the Chiefs are playing in the playoffs at
Arrowhead at night. So yeah, so it did work. TV
camera also helps it. And Doug the surprising thing, it
actually really helps contrasting with the Lions colors of blue
and gray. I think that also helped the red.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Pop Stug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports traw Yes, I
and you and I are complete agreement. You are the
the uh what's the term we should use from here?
You're the czar of the uniforms, and I'm just a
I'm just an opinion opinionated guy who digs him.
Speaker 6 (09:05):
They looked good in the in the uniforms, just not
so much on the field, but how much honestly though,
like in that aspect of it. Not to say that
their playoff run is has an asterisk by it, but
they played a close game against the Eagles, played a
close game against the Bengals. Jaguars gave them, you know,
a run for their money. It's you know, the Chiefs
(09:26):
are obviously defending the margins for.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Air, the margin for error is not great, and and
every team that wins has things that kind of go
in their favor. Right, It's like it's like the Bengals, right, Like, dude,
the Bengals were going to lose to the Ravens without
Lamar Jackson if not for fumble right before the goal line,
right like that was gonna happen. And you know, so
we could go round on but you're right, they that
margin for error has been made much slighter without Tyreek Hill,
(09:52):
and even with Tyreek Hill, like they were getting beaten
badly by the Niners, and you know, a couple of
Tyreek Hill plays and then a couple you know, bad
throws by Jimmy Garoppolo and they in that Super Bowl.
Speaker 7 (10:02):
This is the best of the Done dot Leaf Show
on Fox Sports Radio. What Up?
Speaker 3 (10:10):

get there. Unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free roadhouse protection,
over ten thousand recommended stallars tyract dot com. It's the
way tire buying should be. I'm gonna get to my
(10:41):
my five for five in a moment. That's our five
Picks College five Picks Pro getting you ready for this
weekend in the NFL, this weekend in college football, including
my DraftKings, same game parlay. Of course we'll get to
all of that. Plus Chris Filika is going to join
(11:01):
us this hour. If you know Chris Fahilik, you know
the bet college football, you know the bear. He used
to work at the old place. Now he's with us
at Fox. He also has his own betting podcast, and
you see him on Big Noon Kickoff, Big Noon Kickoff.
Before we get to that, though, I do want to
talk about a topic which is going to be discussed
(11:22):
a ton tomorrow on all the college football shows and
on your local radios it's discussed, and on the national shows,
all discussed and everyone and so many people come to
the same conclusion because it's the easiest possible conclusion. Is
a player named tes Walker, talented kid, played at Kent
(11:43):
State the last two years. He transferred in January to
North Carolina and he was because if he actually began
his career at North Carolina Central, which is an HBCU
right in Durham. North Carolina didn't play in twenty twenty
because there was no season because of COVID transfer to
(12:05):
Kent State. Played two years now transfers to North Carolina.
There's a new rule in college football where your second transfer.
And again remember this is if you haven't graduated. If
you graduate, you can transfer whatever you want without penalty,
play right away your second your second transfer, though you
(12:25):
only eligible if you pass a waiver. Now there's a
lot that goes into it, but the overall narrative is
always the NCAA is the worst. Right, that's the your opinion.
I would guess that your opinion of the NCAA is
(12:48):
lower than that of used car dealers and maybe slightly
above that of drug dealers. Right, because there's the farius
like NCAA. Well, this is a new rule. Actually there's
a new series of rules, and the rules were pushed
(13:08):
by athletic directors and coaches, including the coach involved in
this Mac Brown. But because tes Walker didn't play at
North Carolina Central, and because it's an NCAA ruling, you know,
and by the way, it's North Carolina like North Carolina,
(13:29):
get over yourself, right, you had fake classes for a
long time. You suffered no punishment at all by the
NCAA won a national championship during that investigation, right, I mean, really,
we're now going to go at the NCAA when they
let us off easy because of the fake classes. Okay,
that's how it works. But the nca is always bad.
(13:51):
But I think that the troubling part is so many
people who cover the sport. I'm not talking about the reporters,
but a pinionist don't actually know the rules, the impetus
behind the rules and make bizarre correlations of the rules.
Here's Pat McAfee earlier today.
Speaker 8 (14:07):
But the NCAA is in an interesting situation. The NCAA
has less power than it's ever had in its entire being.
Now it used to be the heavy hand in every conversation.
And remember they would use the word that they made
up amateurism as the reason for why common sense things
couldn't happen for players and the NCAA divisions. So now
(14:28):
that NIL has taking place, it kind of kicks them out.
Even though they're digging back into the files to find
when NIL wasn't legal, did anybody do any NIL stuff?
Speaker 1 (14:37):
We will still punish them with what they're doing.
Speaker 8 (14:40):
In North Carolina, these fans are chanting it free tes
Walker for a reason. This is the dumbest thing that.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
The NCUBLEA has maybe ever done.
Speaker 8 (14:49):
I'm not saying it's the worst thing they've ever done,
but maybe it's the dumbest thing they've ever done. We
have players that are playing in college football for as
long as it would take to become a doctor. Eight
year seniors taking place with red shirt, blue shirt, gray shirt,
COVID year, COVID year, transfer year, bounce year, Oh, I'm
(15:09):
a doctor now and.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
I'm a senior.
Speaker 8 (15:12):
On the football field, there's people moving from school to school.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Yeah, here's the thing. What Pat McAfee just said is
one of the dumbest, least educated things ever said on radio. Okay, first,
let's take it in. The NIL thing doesn't really have
a lot to do with this. The players going from
school to school to school, which he said is a problem,
(15:37):
is the exact reason that this rule was put in place.
And the idea of playing in college football in your
eighth year, which really guys just throughout the eighth year.
I have seen seventh year, but tes Walker could be
that guy. They didn't take away any eligibility from tes Walker.
They didn't limit his ability to make NIL, which is
the real reason I would guess he left Kent State
(15:59):
doesn't have an IL for North Carolina. He has two
more years of eligibility remaining, even though he entered college
in two thousand and twenty. You're like, what, Yeah, he
enter college twenty and twenty. That's why he didn't play
no COVID year, right, So he gets to sit this
year beyond full scholarship if he can have an NIL deal.
If they can steal whatever. However, the ideal el deal works,
(16:20):
you know, based upon the contract that he signed, it applies, okay,
and then the next two years he can play college football.
And here's the kicker, right, he can play North Carolina
next year. And if he graduates on time, and he
probably should because he went to North Carolina Central, he
went to Kent State. North Carolina is a great education.
(16:40):
If he wants to go elsewhere post grad and he
still has a year left, by rule, he can. And
here is the most disingenuous part of the entire thing. Pat. Look,
he probably doesn't know it and is fine, right. Pat
even has tells people on air like, Hey, I'm playing
catch up on college football because i haven't covered it
(17:02):
in forever after having played it, and I'm mostly an
NFL and local you know, keep kind of talks local
talk a little bit, right, I got it right. But
Mac Brown was pushing for this. The coaches don't want
the two time transfers to be able to play right away.
And you're like, well, that is totally unfair to players. No,
(17:24):
it's not. There's actually a protection in place for the
players in terms of being run off because once you
transfer that second that once you transfer, okay, wherever your
second school is, right, they are kind of responsible for
you to graduate. It affects their Academic Progress Report, and
(17:45):
how you do in the APR can change whether you're
boy eligible or how many scholarships you get. There's protections
in place. This has all been vetted and voted upon.
And this, this one particular deal is important for the
NCAA because there's a bunch of other transfers and what
do they all say when they want to play right away?
Mental health issues. I don't know if tes Walker has
(18:06):
a legit mental health issue or do not. I'm not
going to ever question that. I can only tell you
that if you leave a school because you have a
mental health issue, two things are I believe are to
be true. One, you had the ability to go to
a counselor psychologist, psychiatrist while you're at your school. You
had a mental health issue, and he didn't tell anybody. Okay,
(18:27):
here's the second part. If you really have a mental
health issue, if it's really affecting your life, your ability
to be a student or ail be an athlete so
much so that you're moving home or whatever, and nobody's
taking away your eligibility or your ability to make money
in nil, which really is just paid for play. Shouldn't
you Why is taking a year off of football to
get your mind right, to get in a better place
(18:48):
for yourself. Why is that a bad thing? Of course,
it's a direct because it's not about anything more than
about being able to play and make money right away.
He could still play two more years of football, can
still become a doctor and pat quoting the old rules,
not realizing this is a rule that was voted upon,
(19:09):
vetted and oh yeah, by the way, the NCAA is
actually the member institutions, including schools like North Carolina, that
badly wanted this rule put in place for football and
for basketball. The dumbest things you say are the ones
in which you don't really really take a look at
(19:29):
and investigate when you don't know a ton about it. Instead,
you just take the low hanging fruit. NCAA is bad.
Let me show you why. And by the way, the
NCAA did not come up with the term amateurism. The
Olympics came up with amateurism. Let's get to our five
for five.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
I won't win it twel we got five NFL five
college five on three. It's five for five with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
Hi Dominie Promis last year on the five for five.
Killed it in college, killed it in pros. This is
the place you need to look to. You just do
we know what we're doing here, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox
Sports Radio. Uh, let's let's start with the college game.
Text A and M is traveling to Miami taking on.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
The you.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
Connor Wegman was great last weekend. It's a new text
A and M offense. It's year two of this massive,
this unbelievable recruiting class. They got transfers, they got dudes.
This is a mismatch from the time they got off
the bus. And you know, look, I don't how do
I say this? I hmmm. I don't think that anybody
(20:49):
would say that by Petrino is the world's greatest head
coach or dude maybe, but I mean he was the
head coach of a guy who's gone on to be
a was a Heisman Trophy winner and a League MVP
and Lamar Jackson. His offenses at at Arkansas were outstanding
(21:13):
and look at Texas A and M. As of now
he's getting to call the plays. I think by Petrina's
a massive upgrade to what they're doing. Offensively, A and
M goes in and smacks around Miami, Miami. They don't
draw well, they'll draw well for this game, but A
and M will bring a ton of fans. I like
the Ags, believe it or what I'm saying, I'm like
the Aggs on the road. I think they molly want Miami. Uh,
(21:36):
Texas takes on Albama. Albama Texas knows who they are. Offensively,
Quentin yours had not been gotten hurt last year, they
might have won that game. I just I don't think
Alabama knows who they are. I also like the under
in this game. And by the way, it's our same
(21:59):
game parlay. Yeah, that's right. Looking for a small bet
into a big payday. With DraftKings Sportsbook, you can pocket
more cash when you combine multiple bets from one game.
Download the app, sign up with the code gottlib, get
a special offer striction to apply. Seedraftkings dot Com slash
Sportsbook for details. Yeah, here's here's my parlay of the
(22:20):
week in my j stew team parlay. If you will. Yeah,
I like Texas and the under. The totals fifty four.
I think both teams have outstanding defenses. I think Texas
wins outright on the road. Texas under in Tuscaloosa, UH,
Oregon take it on Texas Tech. I like Texas Tech.
(22:42):
I think a massive overreaction to the fact that they
had the game won. Last weekend, Texas Tech did playing
up in Wyoming. They had a weather delay for a
couple hours. They come back out, altitude hits you, and
they get beaten. A crazy game in Wyoming. Tech and
Lubbock's hard to beat. I like Tech. I like Tech.
Good weekend, by the way for the big twelve and
(23:04):
one more pick. Usc is taking on Stanford the Cardinal.
Cardinal are trying to transition from their former offensive road
ways to where they're trying to open up the offense
a little bit. Scored. I think thirty seven points in
Miami last weekend, not only I like the over in
(23:26):
this one. Sixty nine and a half is the over under.
I think USC is going to continue to score every
time they get the football. That's a big time offensive team.
And the last pick of the weekend as my five
for five, Colorado taking on Nebraska. I just don't think
Nebraska has the offensive pop to keep up with CU.
I do think the Dion train keeps running, running station
(23:47):
to station. They go to two and oh they're now
at two and a half point favorite. If it was three,
I might stay away. Nebraska loses close games. I don't
think they win this one. Give me Colorado. That's my
college picks. Let's get to the n s L Do
do do do do do do do do do?
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (24:10):
Okay, let's start with the Jaguars taking on the Colts.
Jacks went to the playoffs, beat the Chargers. They're the
class of that division. Colts not gonna have their starting
running back and they have a rookie quarterback who didn't
play a ton of football. There'll be some spectacular Anthony
Richardson plays, but the Colts aren't a good football team.
(24:32):
Jaguars win. Jaguars cover in Indy plus five. It's okay.
I got Jacksonville Steelers at home against the Niners. Two
and a half point dog at home. We've heard all year,
about all off season about that the Steelers have massively
improved and fixed that offensive line. I think that to
be true. I think they got some good skilled position players.
(24:55):
I think they'll get rid of the football kind of quickly.
And I think the Niners offense, like, look, when you
don't have Rock Purty all off season, it's really hard.
I got the Steelers at home, Home Dogs, the Steelers, Yes, please.
The Patriots are taking on the Eagles. Everybody's all over
(25:15):
the Eagles. They're a four point favorite, home Dogs. Give
me the Pats this weekend. Packers are taking on the Bears. Now,
Romeo Dobbs will play. Christian Watson is list I believe
is out right. We'll get to Dan Byer maybe for
an update on that one. I want your Flexus' podcast.
(25:38):
But the Packers are better than the Bears. They just are.
I'm not buying into this Bears team as a one
and a half point favorite. Give me the pack Aaron Jones,
all of a sudden, we're gonna talk about Jordan love It,
how awesome he is. I don't know if he's awesome.
I think he's a good game manager in his first year.
I think they win the game. And the last pick,
last pick is going to be my same game, parlay,
(26:04):
my same game parlayy. Seattle's taking on the La rams Hey.
Seattle's a five point favorite. The over six and a
half give me and the under. I just don't per
cup and you're just you know, throwing Matt Stafford out
(26:25):
there with a makeshift team. I think Seattle wins, Seattle covers,
but I think the game is under the forty six
and a half. Those are my picks.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
Here.
Speaker 7 (26:35):
It is five NFL. Let's go five college five for
five with Doug Gottlie. Fox Sports Radio has the best
sports talk lineup in the nation yet. Catch all of
our shows at foxsports radio dot com and within the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
So yesterday, after the show, the Bengals agree to terms
with Joe Burrow in a five your two hundred and
seventy five million dollar extension, which includes two hundred and
nineteen point oh one million dollars in guarantees. Sources told
ESPN the deal makes him the highest paid player in
the history of the NFL. You go back to what
I said about Caleb Williams comments, and it's just so uh,
(27:17):
it's just so lost on the truth and the accuracy
of it, you know. And the point was when Burrow
came out, people said, don't go you I know you're
from Ohio, don't go to Cincinnati. They're cheap. Hey, they're
not good, they're not well coached. You don't have a
good offensive line, and you know it's you should make,
you know, do the Eli Manning and force them to
trade you elsewhere. In that time, Joe Burrow, though he
(27:41):
did tear his ACL in his first year, they've rebuilt
the offensive line. Pro Football Focus had them the eighth
best offensive line of football last year. They've been to
they've been to a Super Bowl and they won the
Super Bowl, been to an AFC Championship game, and now
Joe Burrow is the highest paid player in the history
of league. So yeah, but what you're hearing from some
(28:04):
people is, well, you know, Bengals only announced this right
before the Thursday night game, just a little tweak to
the Kancity Chiefs. The reality is that how about Burrow's
agent is actually the same agent as Nick Bosa. Talk
about a good week five hundred million dollars in contracts,
(28:24):
you know, you do the main you want you want
to do the math on that. The standard is three percent.
Even if it wasn't three percent, but three percent of
five hundred million dollars, And maybe if they only get
four hundred million dollars, but right. Three percent of one
hundred million dollars is three million dollars. Three percent of
(28:45):
you know, of four hundred million dollars is twelve million dollars.
So if they get all five hundred, which Burrow is
going to have another contract or whatever, if he stays
with the same agent, doesn't you know? I mean, now
you're talking about five hundred million dollars? Is he fifteen
million dollars? Again, that's in fees alone, and then remember
(29:09):
usually guys get twenty percent on endorsement fees. That's a
pretty good week for an agent. How was your week?
Pretty good? What'd you do? Well? You know, I got
Tesla Stockett went up, My Applestock went down. How'd you do?
Speaker 9 (29:19):
Ah?
Speaker 1 (29:19):
I made you know, hell, over the next five years
or so, I made it kind of guaranteed twelve potentially
fifteen million dollars on contracts alone. It's a good week.
But I think that's why the contracts are not easy
to draw up. It takes some creative bookwork, and I
(29:40):
I think that's why you had to wait until the
Bosa was done, until the borough would be done as well.
They were in the ballpark. Now they get it done,
that's my read on it. Well, that's Mark dominic in
a second. He's going to join us, of course, former
GM of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Okay, we'll get Mark
Dominick in a second. Quick shout out to John, who's
our Las Vegas Uber driver driving my boy Josh around.
(30:03):
Josh just hopped into Uber and he just popped into
McCarron Airport. He got in with John and they're listening
to the show. Shout out to you, John. Make sure
Josh you know listen. This is on the I know
the company you work for, it's on their account. Make
sure you tip John up right. He's listening to great
radio station in in Sin City. This show is brought
to you by Progressive Insurance. Progressive makes bundling easy and affordably.
(30:25):
Get a multi policy discount by combining your motorcycle, RV, BOWT,
ATV and more all your protection one place bundle. Lets
save it Progressive dot Com. Go ahead there, Jase.
Speaker 9 (30:34):
Too, Dan, I got a question for you. Is Alcarez
still in the US? Open?
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Yes?
Speaker 9 (30:42):
Okay, could somebody keep an eye on this, and maybe
maybe our Uber driver in Vegas could keep an eye
on this. If anybody uses.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
The phrase escape from Alcarez.
Speaker 9 (30:52):
Yeah, that this tennis player could not escape from Alcarez.
That you heard it here first, I've I.
Speaker 1 (30:59):
Went the first come up with that one.
Speaker 9 (31:00):
Yeah, he couldn't escape from Alcarez. I got that one.
And then yesterday I introduced caving for Caleb.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
Uh, well, you you caving in for Caleb, which I adjusted.
Speaker 9 (31:13):
You're right, right, So it's a Gottlieb Stewart production.
Speaker 1 (31:17):
By the way, Novak Djokovic is taking on Ben Shelton.
You are you familiar with Ben Shelton at all?
Speaker 9 (31:22):
I know he serves hard. I know his dad was
a tennis player and his mother was an All American
tennis player. And yes, I just did a deep dive
on him on Wikipedia about two days ago.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
A deep Wikipedia is a deep dive.
Speaker 9 (31:37):
Yeah, that's the deepest of dives.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
That is not the deepest of dives, right, that's actually
a shallow dive, I think. But it doesn't matter. Left
handed one hundred and forty seven mile an hour serve
and like he's the next great tennis hope in America.
He's taken on Novak Djokovic, which who I'm having to
watch on my computer because I can't watch on my
screen because of the obviously cable issues. Mark Dominic joints
(32:03):
us he spent twenty years in the NFL front offices
and scouting. Former gentle manager of the table Buccaneers. Let
me let me, let me ask you, Mark, let me
ask you. Let's start with the Bosa deal. Okay, the
Bosa deal was signed a couple of days ago. Biggest
deal in the history of football from a defensive player.
What do you I know, not all the details are out,
(32:25):
but your overall feel when you saw those numbers come out?
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Yeah, yeah, I thought he even did better than I
expected to do. I didn't think he'd get it all
the way up to possibly what's around thirty five million
a year or in new money, just almost thirty two
million dollars year, which is great. You know, I know
he's fighting for Aaron Donald Air. He took it and
grabbed it and ran with it. And you know, we
talked about this before, but I wasn't surprised that the
forty nine ers were able to strike this deal because
I know how important both it is that defense, and
(32:51):
I know how important the season is to the forty
nine ers. With some certain uncertainties kind of running around
the quarterback spot with help and things like that, and
they need a stability there. They got Bosa in and
he's going to play. And so happy for Bosa. I mean,
you have two sons that are crushing. They're gonna end
up making you know, three or four hundred million dollars
between the dad that you know played in nash football
for a cup of coffee. He's two boys that are
(33:13):
mopping it up now in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Yeah, no doubt about it. Okay, the Borrow deal numbers
came through again, we don't know the breakdown of it.
Reported as two hundred and nineteen point one million guaranteed.
That makes him the highest paid player in the history
of football. Does have injury history, obviously, What do you
think about that deal?
Speaker 4 (33:34):
Yeah, I think the injury history something we talked about
and something I thought that would make this negotiation maybe
slow down a little bit. But happy for him. I mean,
Joe Burrow is in that era of you know, Patrick
Mahomes and et cetera. You know a lot of people
have him one or two or two or one, and
so to see him be able to pull down that
kind of a contract with the Bengals is impressive to me.
(33:56):
Also from the Bengal standpoint, they've been a notoriously more
frugal organization, but they opened up the pocketbook here and
got one of the studs in the National Football League
under contract. So the only thing you can do is
have the next group of quarterbacks just keep staring at
these numbers going. I don't know how they're going to
get high, and I really don't think so. I think
we just saw them reset. I think the only player
that'll push Joe Burtle for another couple of years could
(34:18):
be if Patrick Mahomeey does his deal.
Speaker 1 (34:23):
Yeah, I mean the Patrick mahomes thing is interesting. I'm
looking at the Chiefs last night and obviously Kelsey being out.
Reportedly they're between ten and twelve million apart with Chris Jones.
But the overall talent that rosters I don't think is great.
I could be wrong. You tell which thing, and part
of it is Mahomes Even though it's a team friendly
deal this year, it's eighteen percent of the cap. What
(34:47):
do you think of how the Jones thing ends up
in Kansas City?
Speaker 4 (34:51):
Yeah? I think everybody deals with that right and once
you start paying that quarterback. You got to figure out
how you're going to build your football team. You can
go back to the Bengals last year, right That's why
they put their franchise tag on Jesse Bates, and when
it tech team times to pay him, they sit off
to Atlanta because I can't afford to pay all these positions,
and that's a position we don't see. You know, I
agree with you. You know, last night was painful to watch,
(35:11):
frustrating because if Patrick made enough throws in that game
where the chief should have won the game, but Detroit
made it, took advantage of it opportunities and scored with
the interception return and you know, made an early conversion
on that first drive to you know, go forward inside
their own twenty. They did aggressive things and it paid
off for Detroit. So I think that when we all,
(35:32):
when it's all said and done, I'm curious if Kansas
City doesn't look back and say, you know, we could
have added DeAndre Hopkins to this football team. So when
push comes to shove, we've got somebody else that's clutch
besides Kelsey, because right now I don't think they have that,
and they're gonna they're gonna want that now I'm not
Bailey on Kansas City. It's a loss in the NFC.
Kansas City is going to be just fine, all those
kind of things. I think it's a bigger win for
(35:53):
Detroit that it's a bigger loss for Kansas City. But
I do think it helps Chris Jones, and I do
think it'll move the needle where I think it won't
take all eight weeks at Chris Jones signed. I have
a feeling, well, he'll be signed the next two or
three weeks.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
Yeah, I agree, Juan Taylor is lying up. I talked
to somebody in the NFL today and they're like, that's
an interesting formation that the Chiefs use, where they have
four offensive linemen and then a wing back blocking on
that that right end. Yeah, he did this last year
in Jacksonville, and I was told that the Chargers in
the during the AFC wild Card game complained vociferously about it.
(36:29):
But I mean, he didn't get off the ball all
that well, there's a reason that he's back all that far,
and he's twitching now that it's been exposed to everybody
in the league because nothing else was on. I mean,
don't they don't they start calling that doesn't this dramatically
changed their off which the tackles are not strengths for
the Chiefs to begin with.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
No, they're not. And they paid Orlando or They played
Juwan Taylor more than Orlando Brown got to leave, you know,
to per Cincinnati. So I was kind of surprised that
the chief signed Johan Taylor, but I don't want to
disparage his game. But here's what's going to happen, and
this is what we would do every week now. Number One,
there's no doubt that clubs are calling up to the
league offs about that and saying, hey, wait, what's the
(37:10):
legal limits here, because all of my tackles want to
know if I can get away with that right. Number Two,
when they start in the next game, you know, you
meet with the officials about an hour hour and a
half before the games that come in. They kind of
walk through stuff with their head coach. And one of
the rules with the head coach. One of the rules
we talk about during the week is we kind of
look at the opponent's tape and kind of look at
you know, this corner is really aggressive with his hands,
this offensive lineman really likes to hold, you know, make
(37:32):
sure you're watching out for this guy because he trips
a lot of people. You don't pick up a lot
because if you start just picking apart too much, Doug,
it's like okay, okay, but if you pick up one thing,
like hey, that John Taylor, Now you've got to really
look at the way he's said it and if that's legal,
and I want you to keep an eye on us
just for the game, Can you do that for me? Fellas?
Speaker 2 (37:46):
Sure?
Speaker 4 (37:47):
And boom, they're going to close that down a little bit.
They're gonna give him a warning time to move up
a little bit, and then they'll start throwing the penalties
and he's going to have to move up. So it's
something you can control that way, where you talk to
the officials prior to the game. And you'll see clubs
do that, I think all season long, and they don't
have to if they don't start to actually do a correction.
In house in Kansas City.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
We're trying to figure out what Arizona's doing, and it
feels like, here's what it feels like. Okay, I know
everybody thinks they're tanking, and maybe maybe it's it really
is that simple, but kind of you look at it outside,
and you're like, well, Steve Kim, he was kind of
he was applying a bunch of band aid. Like everybody
has a band aid here or there that they hope,
you know, doesn't get peeled off. But he had a
(38:28):
lot of band aids in the past couple of years.
And you know, now he's gone new GM comes in
and you know he's got a Patriots Titans sort of background.
He's like, whoa, this is not how we build it.
And you don't have your quarterback? What what? What do
you make of what they're throwing out there in Arizona?
That's tough.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
I agree. I mean it's it's a situation where I
think that's seven what Caleb Williams out of the USC
the quarterback is a little concerned that he could go
number one.
Speaker 5 (38:56):
There.
Speaker 4 (38:57):
Look, to your point, this is a team that none
of these players are THEIRS. I mean, this draft class
is THEIRS. Maybe a couple of free agent moves are THEIRS,
but for the most part, ninety percent of this rosters
is from someone else, another coach, another general manager, and
so everybody's on call, including Kyler Murray. And I think
that's why you've seen them kind of clean out salary
and be able to handle Kyler Murray if they need
(39:18):
to do like what we saw in Philadelphia, like Carson
Wentz is like let's just eat this up and go
do the same thing with Jared Goff, like let's go
and go in a different direction. And I think that's
what Arizona's doing. And that's why I think, you know,
my Austin Forts, the general manager, did accumulate draft picks
all through the draft ands continue to try toccumulate more
picks early on in the season. I think he'll even
try to pick up a couple more before the trade deadline,
(39:39):
even if they're six and sevens, because I think they're
going to reset this whole franchise. And I think that's
what Caleb Williams and other people are a little concerned about,
because it's not it's hard to say this, but it's
not the franchise's fault. It's ownership. And ownership hasn't been
great there, as you can tell by all the different
things that have gone on with whether it's a one
year coach, a fire GM, a frustrated employees suing back
(40:02):
to the organization. There's been a lot of moving parts
in their organization you.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
Mentioned, and yeah, there's a former scout who's suing the
team and it is ug ugly. It is. It is fascinating.
Like you talk about the one year coach, how do
they let that Jonathan Gannon video come out? That was
that was released by the team's video production arm right
(40:28):
by the way one that's the edited best stuff they got.
But that that is not a great that's not like
one of those like Dion's motivational speeches. Put them out
as much as you can, that one not so much.
How does that get out?
Speaker 4 (40:42):
I agree? I mean I and when I was general manager,
you know, one of the things I wanted to do
was try to be able to see and I ran
into a problem with we put out a video, and
I was like, what are we doing sabotage in our
organization to understand why why we're put this video out?
So from now on, you have to show me everything.
So it's probably just one of the first lessons learned
from mine is where somebody thinks it's great content, but
(41:02):
the look is not. And so that was not very good.
And you know it's concerning a little bit, but you know,
we got to see what this Arizona team looks like
not only through these first few weeks about Kyler Murray,
but the next couple of weeks after it. But you know,
it certainly stares like a long season in airs.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
On them, it does feel like a long season in Arizona.
Mark Dominic joined us, of course, spent his entire professional
life in the National Football League, most notably is the
gentle manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He joins us
here on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Some really good matchups week one of the season. I mean,
the one that I would highlight in the in the
(41:40):
early games is San Francisco taking on taking on Pittsburgh,
and San franch is a favorite in Pittsburgh. I mean,
this is really a challenge Pittsburgh. Many people have said, hey,
they really rebuilt their offensive line. Is this a great
test to see if they have?
Speaker 4 (41:56):
I think it is. I mean, they drafted Roger Thomas
and number one overall the fourteen the draft trained up
to get him, and he didn't win the job back
over Dan Moore. I don't think.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
I think it.
Speaker 4 (42:04):
Looks like he's still so it shows you that even
the guy that they had in that organization. Has been
fighting a tailoff to kind of prove what he can
be and what they can do. I think the Steelers
offensive line is better. I think the skill position from Pittsburgh.
I think Kenny Pickett had a really nice preseason. They
look like they're firing in all cylinders and they're healthy
walking into Week one. You know, I think Brock Party
is going to be fine week one. Traveling across the country,
(42:26):
I don't have as much confidence. I think Pittsburgh's a
better team. Yes, there's pieces of San Francisco I do like,
but it's a new defensive coordinator, not a new defensive
counter in the National Football League, but just it's not
Demko Ryans, and that's that's something you have to consider.
And I like the stability that Pittsburgh has, and I
think it's going to be as fascinating.
Speaker 7 (42:45):
You know.
Speaker 4 (42:45):
It's interesting. We've got Kenny Pickett, was the first quarterback
drafted in the draft, and then we've got you know,
Brock Pratty was the last quarterback drafted in that draft,
and they get to go against each other. But I
like the Steelers in that one.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
The Dolphins travel to take on the Chargers. Last year,
Chargers dominated this game to Tyreek Hill kind of freak plays,
one repicks of a fumble, runs the back. We're really
the only offense for Miami, but new coordinators on both
sides and really rework teams. This is one of those Like,
I know they're not playing against each other, but I
(43:17):
feel like this is a gigantic game for the Chargers
considering you can actually start the season with a game
up on the Chiefs. What are your thoughts on the
Dolphins heading into so far?
Speaker 4 (43:27):
Yeah, it's I think that's very fair statement. You know,
when you've got an AFC game, you know, I have
both these teams that I think can make the postseason
this year in terms of seven teams, So it's going
to be a huge tiebreaker when it comes to Week
eighteen and we're at the end of the season. We
talk about that all the time, right Doug, You're like, well,
you got to be playing your best football in you know,
November December. You better play some good football in September
(43:48):
because some of those tie breakers will come back and
haunt you, and I think this is one of them.
I think, you know, it's going to be a huge
like not only in your division if you're the Chargers
and win because you are one over the Chiefs, but
now you're also one over the Dolphins. Are almost a
two game swapp over the Dolphins if you end up
tied with them at the end of the season. So
huge optionity for that. And then I think we're all
going to be watching the Tua and Kenny stay healthy?
(44:09):
Does he take some hits, does he get it a backup,
bounce up? Is he going to be fine? I'm sad
they were going to be doing that for seventeen games
for the Dolphins to see if you can do that.
Sometimes we watch that at different positions. Bryce Sannon is
going to be a guy that everybody's going to watch
the say, Kenny stay healthy for seventeen games. Ken Brock
pretty stay healthy for seventeen games, But can Tua? Because
we know that that's how the Dolphins are going to
live and die this year Monday night.
Speaker 1 (44:31):
We won't get a chance to talk to you before
Monday night. You know, so much of the talk is
about the Jets. What about Buffalo Right two years ago,
they're thirteen seconds away from beating Kansas City in Kansas
City last year, I would have to think that tomorrow.
Hamlin was part of what befell them. They had some
other issues and now there's talk of, hey, maybe Stefan
(44:53):
Diggs isn't in the Josh Allen because Josh Allen, it's
a work ethic question. But Buffalo has kind of, we
could say, a forgotten team, but they're definitely not the
flavor of the month they were the way they were
last year this time. What do you think about the
Money Night game in Jersey?
Speaker 4 (45:10):
I can't wait to watch it. I can't wait to
see Aaron Rodgers in a different uniform, Like everybody's just
sick because I see what that looks like. I can't
wait to see what Garrett Wilson can actually do in
the National football when he's targeted what I hope is
thirteen to fifteen times, and then see how many policy
comes down with. But I don't think it's going to
be enough. I do think people are sleeping on Buffalo's
years because it's so easy to talk about other teams
in the AFC, and yet I think Buffalo's even better
(45:34):
than they were a year ago. And I think, you know,
with the draft, with the free agency, a little bit
of moves Leonard Floyd bringing him in to be another
pass rusher while Mountain while von Miller gets right, I mean,
those are just little hidden moves that I think people
aren't paying attention to that I'm might be very curious
because I think Buffalo is a complete team. They're not
just good offensively, they're not good defensively. They're good on
(45:54):
special teams too, a consistent football team across the board,
and they are the team that I think is the
biggest sleeper, which seems kind of crazy to your point
that you know you're going to say, you know, are
they going to go to the super Bowl this year? It
seems like, you know, will they win the division? I
think they still will.
Speaker 1 (46:09):
Awesome stuff. Mark. Obviously, we love catching up with you,
but now that we get into the real stuff, we
can get the real stuff from you in regards to
what's happening and with teams around the league. Enjoy the
football and we'll talk to you next week. Thank you
so much for being our guest.
Speaker 4 (46:22):
Thanks for having me on Doug Ticket
