Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug gottlie Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug gottli.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
What Stugt Gottlieb Show in the Bonus on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
You know, I don't hate saying.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
I told you so, so I don't have to say
I told you so, but I told you so. Luca's amazing,
just completely and thoroughly dominant. And what's really impressive is,
you know we I've often been a defender of most
players in regards to the pressure of series. It's like, look,
(00:52):
if you can be clutch in the Eastern Conference finals,
why can't you be clutch in the NBA Finals. Now,
some of that is different because you know, like, look,
the NBA Finals is bigger, just is bigger stage. But
usually when you're playing, you're just playing. The point I'm
trying to get to is there's a I don't think
anybody's surprised by Luca. May be impressed by Luca, but
(01:13):
the reason you could see it coming was he's been
this guy since he was nineteen years old. He's nineteen
and he was the best player on Real Madrid and
won a FOBA Championship. I believe it's the same summer
that with Slovenia they won a European Championship. And while
the level of talent overall and athleticism is clearly better
(01:38):
in the NBA, in regards to handling pressure, you're not
going to get any more pressure than playing for your country,
especially when you don't have as good a talent as
other countries have. So yeah, I saw it coming. Yes,
I knew he's as good. I don't know how he
does it. I heard Colin cowhert and we'll talk about
(01:58):
this later. Equate him to Michael Jordan. No, pull your
heads out of your asses. That's Larry Bird. Not fast
than anybody, but it doesn't matter. Big, strong, tough, talks,
a lot of shit, rebounds, passes, does it all. If
Larry Bird was was, was alive, was playing today, I
(02:20):
don't think he'd handle the ball as much, but he'd
be incredibly effective. People forget how effective a reboundary was.
Everybody remembers how great a pastor he was and Chewy was.
But using your size, using your strength, using your pivot,
like all that shit, that's Larry fucking Bird. So to
people who wanted to diminish Bird, just remember Larry Bird
was better than Luca better than Luca, and he similarly
(02:45):
dominated like Luca did back in the eighties and into
the early nineties. And as for Luca, I just get
the last time we saw Jason Tainam in the finals,
he wasn't ready for it. And while Kyrie Irving isn't
you know, doesn't have the ability to do what he
did last night every night anymore.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
We have seen Kyrie.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Win an NBA championship, we have seen him step up
when everything's on the line, and we've seen it from
Luca even if we haven't seen it in the NBA.
The point is, and we'll talk a little gambling later
on the show. I like the Mavericks. Some of it
is the fact they can defend the rim with their
big guys. And I know that obviously I Brazingi's plays
(03:31):
and Horford plays they play him outside. But I kind
of like this Mavericks team, like the matchup, and I
like the fact that the two best players I know
what they'll play like when it gets a nut cutting time.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and The iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
App Let's get to the Fox.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Says and now.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
FU say every day of this time, and Doug Gotlieb
Show and Fox Sports Ready, we played for you a
previous portion of a Fox Sports Trader of Fox Sports
one show.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
We caught it.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
What does the Fox say? Here is Dan Patrick talk
about the t Wolves and Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
I know the Minnesota Timberwolves are going to get a
haul passed today because we're going to go ah. They
overachieved and there was no aggression. I wanted to see physicality.
I wanted you to come out and say you're not
going to win on our floor. And I never saw
it last night. But I was surprised, I don't want
to say disappointed. I was surprised that I didn't get
physicality out of Minnesota that they were going to I mean,
(04:32):
at some point you got to bump him, knock him
down something.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
You can't just let him go. I don't know where
do I want to score?
Speaker 5 (04:41):
You know, I haven't shot over here in a couple
of I'm gonna go over here and hit a three.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
I wanted to see something more.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
I wanted to see Anthony Edwards see this is what
drives me crazy about my business. We have to have
a declaration. It's got to be like today. Is Luca
the best player in the NBA?
Speaker 3 (04:58):
I don't know. Was he the best player week ago? Uh?
Probably not? But he is now?
Speaker 5 (05:05):
Okay, Anthony Edwards, he's the second coming of Michael Jordan.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
No, he's not.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Well, we could get into Anthony Edwards element of it
if you like. But I actually do think Luca is
the best player in the NBA. Now, where I would
also side with with dan Is, Yes, he's the second
he's the best player in the NBA. But it didn't
just happen because of last night. And I also would
tell you that I did see it coming with a
(05:33):
what I call a Luca game where he just decides
I'm not losing tonight, and they didn't. So yeah, I mean,
I everybody wanted Minnesota to stop the inevitable, but that
guy's amazing. It's really hard. You know, the spacing is
such now in the NBA, that double teaming, especially when
(05:55):
you have a big guy like Luka Doncik, he can
find the open shooter and when you bed the open shooter.
And what was actually also impressive was, you know, Kyrie
kind of played his role and then when need in
the second half, granted, game was kind of intact, but
then he took over some as well. I just it
was a tough matchup for Minnesota. It's completely different matchup
(06:16):
than Denver. Luca is the best player in the league,
was the best player on the floor. It shouldn't surprise
us what happened. And I that's not a new opinion though.
That's where I would side with Dan, which is it's
not a new opinion. It's been my opinion the entire time,
and last night it rang very very, very very true.
(06:38):
Here's Colin Coward also talking about Luca.
Speaker 6 (06:41):
What's really scary about Dallas? So they opened the playoffs
against old experience Della Clippers got rid of them. Next
it was as an underdog, the young, talented as sending
ok see thunder got rid of them. And then that
was the best defensive team in the league, the biggest
(07:04):
team in the league, Minnesota Nah got rid of them
three for three. Next up the Celtics. They take the
most threes, they make the most threes. But so far,
three different variations, the veterans, the talented kids, and the big,
intense defenders knocked them all out. The Mavericks, because of
(07:26):
those moves at the trade deadline, have been a very
good team in an era of a lot of very
good teams. We'll have our six different champion this year.
But unlike the Celtics, I actually see great not all
the time, but I see it. And that first half
for Dallas that was all time stuff. Luca did what
he did to Phoenix a couple of years ago into
Game seven.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Uh yeah, I mean, Colin is curiously forgetting the fact
that the Clippers, that the Clippers didn't have Kawhi Leonard.
It's a different playoff series. They don't have Kawhi Leonard,
you know. And yeah, Oklahoma City is good, young, inexperienced,
and they took advantage of that. And I think, you know,
we're a year away, maybe two away from Oklahoma City
(08:10):
being the dominant force in the West. And they didn't
have to play the Dallas Mavericks, I mean the Denver Nuggets,
and I don't think they match up particularly well with
the Denver Nuggets. So that being said, considering their road,
they're in the finals. And I also think that it's
kind of amazing they've been able to do this, you know,
(08:31):
with what we thought was the supporting cast, which is
okay and getting better but not necessarily good enough. That
speaks to Luca, can you raise the level of everyone
around you? And the answer is yes. Here's Petros babadakas
Brady Quinn, LeVar Arrington talking about the report that USC
tried to get out of their schedule game with LSU.
Speaker 7 (08:49):
I can understand why SC tried to get out of it.
I mean, Lincoln Riley didn't want to play in the
SEC and left Oklahoma for God's sakes, And it's a
different ad at USC, a different head coach USC from
when they book the game, and a different circumstance in
college football. But it's a bad look for them. And
by the way, I mean LeVar, from what I understand too,
(09:10):
maybe LSU came snooping around Lincoln Riley to go to LSU.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
In the first place.
Speaker 6 (09:14):
Not sure that has anything to do with it, but.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Like try to hire him.
Speaker 8 (09:17):
Yeah, yeah, Listen, when you get into these types of scenarios,
I think because of the way the playoff is set
up now, I mean, don't you have to be extra
cautious and how you're choosing your games? Do you want
to go out and play a big time game out
the gate. I think entertainment wise, I think is really dope.
Speaker 7 (09:41):
Well, that's what it's for, right, I mean, the whole
thing is for entertainment, and if you win, you got
to you know, it's a lot high risk, high reward.
Speaker 8 (09:49):
Yeah, but I don't know that it's worth as the
school either way LSU or USC. I don't know that
it's worth worth the risk.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Here's the reality to it. Okay, and I'm going through
this myself again. This is where you can get stuff
from me you can't get anywhere else. The reality is
that we as fans. Okay, we'll talk about oh, link
Abrad he's running from the SEC again, like or maybe
he saw his schedule and he knows he what he
has to replace and what his level of talent is
(10:22):
and since there and goes like LSU's got a payroll
that's twice ours. We have to go to Michigan. We've
got Penn State at home, we got to go to Washington,
to UCLA, we got Notre Dame like they have in
any conversation of the most ridiculous schedule there is. They're
the easiest game out of conference's Utah State and they
(10:44):
got one of them, right, Like their schedule is insane.
It's fucking schedule aside to play LSU and Notre Dame
and Michigan and the only guy team they avoid is
Ohio State to play Penn State as well. So I
get it. You're sitting there looking like you know they all.
No one ever says when you if you get fired, Hey,
(11:07):
you know, I know you got fired. But he did
play a tough schedule. Nobody says that shit, Okay, nobody,
And in your first year in the Big Ten, when
you have to adjust to completely new opponents, completely new
travel and oh yeah, by the way, the Big ten's good,
and you're trying to kind of figure out what's what,
and you lose Caleb Williams, I don't blame him at all.
And people who do you know, like, look, I was
(11:28):
talking about getting out of a game with an opponent
who you wouldn't even know who they are or where
they're from. But I respect them, and I don't I
have other games which which are designated as very likely losses,
will be substantial underdogs. I don't need a game where
I'm on the bus going home, going Why don't we
schedule that game.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
That was terrible.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
We had no shot. You know, they had three thousand
people going crazy, We got no calls. And our guys
who are a little bit better. That guy's a good coach,
you know. So I actually get it completely get that's
what the Fox said.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Say. Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Let's find out who's annoying Jason Stewart and now it's
your annoying.
Speaker 9 (12:28):
I remembered something that we played in because we can,
and I looked it up those four four weeks ago,
days before Darvin Ham was told he was no longer
the head coach of the Lakers, and I think, Doug,
I have found the exact minute that started the clock
(12:48):
on Darvin Ham's ending with the Lakers and on JJ
Rex JJ Reddick's potential hiring. Do you remember this exchange?
Speaker 10 (12:58):
Has any coach on office person analytics person like on
staff have they ever came to you and talked to
you about analytics and shot profile with you.
Speaker 6 (13:11):
No?
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Never had that discussion.
Speaker 9 (13:14):
Fuck no, no, JJ Reddick circumventing underhandedly throwing Darvin Ham
under the bus, and in an exchange that was that
was on the the podcast. That doesn't annoy me. What's
annoying is this farce that the Lakers are going to
hire anybody other than J. J. Reddick and that this
(13:36):
wasn't a what is it what's the word maya may
a compla whatever the front parted from from. I think
that exchange on that podcast, we're not going to hire
any of these candidates that are coming through. Lebron very
much chose this hire, which goes against the narrative that
Rich Paul wants us to believe that removes Lebron from
(13:56):
the coach search. The whole thing's a fucking farce and
this was going to happen regardless.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
I think all these things can be true, But I
don't necessarily think that the JJ thing was related. I
just don't. I just you know, it's one thing to
be uneducated, it's a whole other thing to push away education,
right or not be well read, and that refuse to read.
(14:28):
That's what Darvin Ham struck me as like Darvinham did
not work hard at his job. He was not on
time to meetings. You know, he didn't care about analytics.
He was just a hey, go out and play hard guy,
and you can't have that with Lebron. And do I
think Lebron was mentally kind of attracted to people who
sound very smart on what they say. Yes, of course,
(14:51):
But I don't necessarily know if it's that interview, but
I understood. I do think that interview exposed Darvinham for
what he tried to do.
Speaker 9 (14:59):
So now that Anthony Edwards is out of the playoffs
and he hasn't had a great didn't have a great
series against some ass overall, he had spectacular moments and
he filled a stat sheet. But I don't think anybody
walks away from this series comparing him to MJ anymore.
Are we are we officially going to put that to bed?
Can we officially call the MJ comparison annoying for this
(15:22):
this NBA season?
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Yes, good, Well, you know it's annoying because it happened
for like two weeks and then and then we started
making fun of the fact that it happened. When half
of the people were making fun of it, were the
people that were saying it to begin with?
Speaker 3 (15:39):
Super annoying.
Speaker 9 (15:40):
I heard Cowhard say today he actually used this phrase.
I don't throw the MJ comparison around lightly, but Luca
has a lot of MJ and it's like, oh my god,
now we're moving on.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
Okay, So he has a lot of Larry Birden.
Speaker 9 (16:00):
Becky Hammon, I think you've made it pretty clear that
you're annoyed with her in general. Yes, and you have
background to back it up. So Becky Hamon, remember she
stood a week ago in front of reporters with aj
Agia Wilson on her side, saying, what is all this
with Katon Clark. There's no hate, no hate. We love
(16:21):
Caitlyn Clark. She's done a lot for this game and
cut out the black and white stuff that doesn't even exist.
There's no resentment. And then she said this yesterday.
Speaker 11 (16:32):
I think there's a lot of good players in this league.
And here's if you haven't been, if you're just a
recent follower of women's basketball, this has been brewing for
a while. Women's basketball it's been like at this boiling point,
building building building. Our arena was sold out long before
Kaitlyn was coming into the league. So I think women's
basketball has just been on building now She's part of
(16:54):
the tipping point, right. She's coming in at this time
where it was ready to tip over, and she her
since has tips and things over. But there's been a
lot of good work going on behind the scenes to
get us to this point by a lot of other people.
I think Caitlyn is very gracious in mentioning those names
too and understanding the women that came before her to
pay the way for this tipping point in this kind
(17:16):
of great time to be a women's basketball player. But
it's a great time because the product is great, and
it's been great, and it's been building, and now that
we have more eyes.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
On it, freaking great.
Speaker 9 (17:25):
I think it's been building and it's been boiling can
be true. But somebody's got to show Becky the ratings
for the w NBA Draft. Somebody needs to show her
that number that came out this past week where the
six most watched w NBA games of all time have
happened this year and five of them were Caitlyn Clark games.
(17:48):
She needs to look at the contract that Nike gave her,
the contract that Wilson gave her. There's like slowly building
and then there's taking it to the entire next level,
and it's only because of Caitlyn Clark that can't be disputed.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Completely agree.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
I actually think both these things can be true. Right
it did. It was like you said, it was building,
and it was. It had a nice it had a
nice little following, seemed to be kind of stable, stabilized itself.
But this whole new level that wasn't building. That's Kaitlyn Clark.
Speaker 9 (18:23):
So we got the farce that is the Lakers coach
and search the MJ comparison to in Uh, Anthony Edwards
and Becky Hammond Hamon Hammon.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Uh, I think the MJ, the MJ deal with the
MJ comparison to Anthony Edwards, on how quickly that started,
how that went away, and how we moved on, and
how comical it actually was. People who compared Anthony Edwards
to Michael Jordan then suddenly made fun of the comparison
of Anthony Edwards to Michael Jordan.
Speaker 4 (18:53):
You're annoying.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Why are we doing this.
Speaker 9 (19:02):
Because we can, Hey, Doug, this is hot off the precess.
This just happened, I mean hot off the press. Joe
Mizoula was asked about this narrative that there is tension
between his two best players, Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown.
Speaker 12 (19:17):
The whole thing about that really pisses me off, and
I think it's unfair to both of them, and I
think it's stupid that people have to use those two guys'
names and use information that they don't know to create
clickbait so that they could stay relevant. And it's very
unfair that those two get compared. They're like two completely
different people. They're two completely different players. They're great teammates,
they love each other, and they go about winning and
(19:38):
they go about their process in a different way. So
why they have to always be lumped together, I think
is unfair and people just use it for their own relativity.
And at the end of the day, like those two guys,
their relationship is their relationship. They love each other, they
push each other every single day in practice, they communicate
with each other, but they go about winning differently, and
I think they're both getting unfair what's the word like,
(20:03):
being compared to each other. They're different and you see
other duos around the league don't have to go through that,
and it's because of the platform that they have. It's
because they've been so successful. Their entire careers. They've been
able to long stand success at a high, high level,
and so people need them in order to stay relevant.
And they should not talk on speculation, and they should
(20:24):
get to know them as people before they talk about
that stuff. They're two of the greatest teammates and players
that you could have, and it's been an honor to coach.
Speaker 9 (20:29):
Both of them.
Speaker 12 (20:30):
Doesn't mean they have to be the same, and so
it's bullshit, and I love both of them and they
deserve better.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
It was a pretty thorough answer. You know, it's a
pretty thorough answer and have an elephant in the room
sort of deal. I don't know if it actually clears
it up, but I do think it was a really
solid answer. Why could we play it for you? Because
we can. All right, let's welcome in Jared Smith, he
joins us. Of course, he's our Fox Sports Radio gambling expert,
(20:59):
and let's go to the NBA Finals. In terms of
early picks, who's the favorite.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
Yeah, Well, Boston's been the favorite pretty much the entire season. Doug.
Speaker 13 (21:11):
It's crazy to see their prices through the postseason. They
were odds on to win the Eastern Conference basically before
the semifinal round, and of course they I would say
had a fortunate path. But I also give them a
lot of credit because the Pacers, especially in the last round,
had like a ninety percent win probability in three out
of the four games, yet Boston was able to sweep. Now,
(21:33):
you could say that was bad Indiana, but I think
you give Boston.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
A little bit of credit.
Speaker 13 (21:36):
We've questioned their intestinal fortitude the entire postseason. I personally
have eaten some humble pie about questioning the fact that
Ken the Celtics really carry this through that killer instinct
that I feel that they've lacked at times throughout the
regular season. It's come out a little bit more in
the postseason. And I give them a lot of credit. Right,
you still got to go out there and play the games,
the professional players, even though no Jimmy Butler against Miami,
(22:00):
Donovan Mitchell for a couple games against Cleveland, and it
was Jared Allen out for the entire series, and then
of course the Tybers Haliburton injury against the Pacers.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Well, Boston stoats to.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
Go execute and win those games, and they did.
Speaker 13 (22:10):
So we're seeing them about oh about a minus two
to twenty favorite in the series against the Mavericks, and
that's implying about a sixty five.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
Percent win probability.
Speaker 13 (22:20):
So if you think Dallas in four out of ten
scenarios can beat Boston, then you should go bet the
Mavericks to win that series.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Okay, who's the favorite to win the series?
Speaker 3 (22:29):
MVP?
Speaker 13 (22:30):
Well, I think you've got to give it to Tatum first,
and that's what the odds are telling us right now.
Luka Doncik's going to be up there too, But you know,
you really just have to kind of handicap this series first.
Tatum's odds on right now minus won ten basically, and
then Luca's the next choice at two to one. If
you want to go a little bit further down the board,
I think Jalen Brown. I mean, listen, he just got
(22:51):
the notoriety in the Eastern Conference finals.
Speaker 4 (22:53):
We'll see how much the voters carry that through.
Speaker 13 (22:56):
I do think Jalen Brown's defense down the stretch of
those games was paramount. If you really want to go
down the board, if you think the MAVs are gonna
win this series, I think Kyrie Irving at twenty two
to one makes a little bit of sense. I mean,
you've got the Boston narrative angle that is going to
be played up through the media. You know, every single
time you hear someone talk about this series over the
(23:17):
next couple weeks. And by the way, we have a
whole week for this series to kind of crescendo until
we actually start playing games. So the media is going
to be hyping up the Kyrie Irving going back to
Boston scenario.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
I think that's going to play up to the voters.
Speaker 13 (23:29):
If he plays well and if Dallas is able to
pull out an upset. I think that's a bet I
would be willing to make at north of twenty to one.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
I like that north of twenty one. Stug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Traded. Jared Smith's are our Fox Sports Radio
betting analyst. Okay, give me some other quirky ones that
you liked from the series.
Speaker 13 (23:48):
Well, I think you can look at you know, and
this is why I love, you know, where the sports
betting landscape has evolved to because the prop market is
to me fascinating. You can also bet player props for
the series. For example, if you think Luka Doncik is
gonna lead the series in three point makes, you can
(24:08):
bet that you can bet who's gonna lead the series
and rebounds. You can bet who's gonna lead the series
in points per game average. For example, if you think
Jalen Brown's gonna have a great series, you can bet
over twenty three points per game average in the series.
So I recommend everyone formulate your own opinion. I mean
everyone has their own opinions on the NBA. Obviously, based
(24:29):
off of those opinions, then I would encourage you to
go to bet MGM, look at all the different offerings
that they have and try to sync up one of
those opinions to what we're seeing. I'll be honest, I
do think this is Boston's year. I think they showed
me something a little bit in this playoff run, and
I know it hasn't been that impressive, but I would
(24:50):
be interested in maybe taking the Celtics to win in
five games or six games. If you want to go
correct score props, you could bet Boston in six games
at five to one Austin in five games, which is
currently the favorite.
Speaker 4 (25:02):
That's about plus three point fifty.
Speaker 13 (25:04):
Again, these are bets that you make it now, and
you don't have to make another bet for the series.
You can watch the first few games play out, you
can reevaluate your opinion and then you can make another
bet later on that either contradicts that or continues to
reinforce that opinion. So I think the way that this
series is structured, maybe a more conservative bet I would
(25:25):
make now is for over five and a half games.
If you do think Dallas is gonna be competitive, you
can just bet the series is gonna go six or
seven games, and you're gonna lay juice for that. But again,
the way the gambi markets have kind of evolved in
the prop world, there's so many different ways to bet it.
You don't just have to bet oh Boston to win,
or oh Dallas to win, or cover over unders. I
(25:46):
like to go into the prop markets. I like to
