how about Luka Dunchik? What a player? What a story?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
What a win?

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Uh? Luca was incredibly dominant twenty five in the first half.
Game felt over at halftime, and the Dallas Mavericks at
Dants to the NBA Finals. And this is actually kind
of interesting. It's a quick aside that kind of weird,
right that though here the Mavericks are. They've been in

(01:12):
the finals before, they won an NBA championship. Obviously with
Dirk they had some I don't know it's necessarily lean years,
but years with Dirk, even where they were upset in
the first round and now here they are back. And
like interestingly, Dallas and their best teams have had foreign
born players, right, just kind of clever, just kind of interesting.

(01:33):
Then you had the fact that Jason Kidd was the
point guard for the Mavericks when they last won at
NBA Championship. Here's Jason Kidd talking about Luca and Kyrie
last night.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
A lot of people have missed on it, but it's
it's all right because now they're right and about that.
It does fit. But those two worked at it. It
just didn't happen overnight. And that's a beautiful thing. And
so it's all right to be wrong, and we're not
always right, but it's a beautiful combination. Those two playoffs
of each other, and you can see that they care,

(02:05):
they care about one another. They're in competition right now.
It's who's playing the best defense, and that's kind of
cool to see because we need to look at Kai
and Luca a lot of times. They're not known for
our defensive, you know, guys, but they're competing and it's
fun to see internally and it's and it's a healthy
thing I do.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
I've told you for a good portion of this season,
I thought lucas the best player. Here's Jason Kidd, Lucas
places in the league.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
For Luca to make it to his first finals, you know,
what is it? What does it say about his place
in the league and this journey he's on to be
one of the greatest.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Well, we believe he is one of the greatest. I
think that's up to the media to write. I mean
that's you guys will will place him in a place
of great goat.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Debates.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
And so for us, what he's done this season of
you know, playing faster, playing defense, doing all the little things,
and then he's never shied from taking responsibility. And today
it's just another example of his maturity of being able
to end the series. And he did that, you know

(03:11):
after the jump ball.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Yeah, no, he was completely and thoroughly dominant. And and
it's one of those things where I have told people,
whether on this outlet or other radio shows, like I
have told him, Luca's gonna win a game, at least
a game in the series. And I have complete faith

(03:34):
that he's not rattled by the moment and I said
this previously, and I mean it. We made the mistake
of Anthony Edwards and the Michael Jordan comparison. I don't
I never thought there was a comparison, not just because
of you know, the audacity of comparing anyone to the goat, okay,

(03:55):
but also because I just didn't feel like their games
really alike. And this one is I do actually think
they're alike. But you have to understand the context of
the time. Luca's big, He's not as big as Larry Bird.
Luca dominates the ball, Larry did not dominate ball as
a different era, and I'm not sure if Larry played today,

(04:16):
if he'd ever be a ball dominant guard. Probably not.
I think I think Larry Bird even better today than
he was then. And you're like, wow, he's not crazy athletic. Well,
neither is Luka Doncik, neither was Paul Pierce, neither was
Dirk Noviski. And he's a He was a much better
rebounder pastor than Dirk. And he also had the type
of swagger, toughness, insability. Really, so yeah, I just I truly, truly, truly, believe,

(04:52):
truly believe that he is this era's Bird. This era's
Bird because Bird was wildly respected by his peers, although
there was some denial by fans. Bird had no problem

(05:12):
talking trash, had no problem with physicality and no and
also got away with the fact that he wasn't crazy
athletic by great footwork, great touch, unbelievable basketball IQ. I
don't think Lucas actually as good at as Bird, but
I do think Luca is currently the best player in
the NBA. So we have Bird or the new Bird

(05:35):
versus the Celtics. We have Kyrie or the new Kyrie
versus his old team, the Celtics. And then you have
the Celtics, who they keep winning and people keep questioning them.
And we'll see obviously if the time off we think
it helps Berzingis comes back, and of course Perzingis is
a former Dallas Paprick. The whole thing gives us some

(05:56):
even though you can't say no one woke up. You
know a month the go go, you know it would
be a good NBA Finals, the Mavericks versus the Celtics.
I don't think anybody envisioned that. I don't think anybody
envisioned that, but we have it. It's pretty good and
it could be a coronation of Luka Doncic. And how
do I know that he would perform well in these

(06:20):
type of really really really pressure field circumstances. You tell
me a place. Granted, Game four of the Oklahoma City Series.
You know, he missed a big free throw and he
wasn't as good as he needed to be last last
game in Game four either, But in pressure pack situations
in Europe and the European Championships. In so far in

(06:40):
the NBA, man has he been really good, really good?
So the challenge in Minnesota is going to be you know,
do they do they think they're as close as teams
think when they get to the Western Conference Finals the
Conference finals, or do they understand the reality of the

(07:01):
fact that they were good. They upset the Nuggets, and
they were built to beat the Nuggets, but they weren't
crazy competitive in this series and their flaws got wildly exposed,
wildly exposed. Jay stud My question to you is, are
you what is your level of intrigue in this series?

(07:23):
You're generally a curmudgeon or a hater as the kids say, uh,
what is your level of intrigue? Like, are you gonna
you've been doing the two weeks. I'm gonna watch Caitlin
Clark for two weeks. Do you have that same level
of interest with this NBA Finals?

Speaker 5 (07:39):
No, completely different. I love this NBA Final matchup. I
like NBA playoffs. I largely ignored the WNBA for my
entire life, so I'll give Caitlin another ten days or so. No.
I this is a great fun matchup to watch. I
think both teams play it up tempo, and they got

(07:59):
great scorers. You could probably go what four or five
deep with Hall of Famers? Is that being too exaggerative,
too hyperbolic?

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Probably a little hyperbolic. I mean, I mean you would
guess one of the two Celtics will probably be, but
I can't say definitely. And then the two you know,
Kyrie and Luca without question, without question. But yeah, I
mean you look, you had two Hall of Fames. I
also like that there's genuine dislike in this series. People

(08:31):
dislike Luca because he complained so much about the calls, right,
and then there's genuine dislike towards Kyrie from Boston. Remember
it's the same Kyrie Irving that grabbed the mic and
said I'll come coming back if you'll have me, oh
my god. And then Boston became everything was bad, racist,
nobody appreciated him, and he was on to Brooklyn. So

(08:54):
there's there was there's something there which gives you a
real sort of fan rivalry. And it's not like the
Celtic fans will be into it. And then, of course
for Jason Tatum, as poorly as he played last time,
they're in the NBA finals. Here's a second shot at
second shot byer, what's your level of interest in the
NBA finals?

Speaker 6 (09:16):
I am interested and I even was looking back and
I thought, okay, at the start of the playoffs, if
you had to pick a finals matchup, where would this
one rank?

Speaker 2 (09:26):
And I think it would be in.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
The top five, okay, over the other the other four be.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
I think, you know, Laker Celtics obviously would.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
Have a Lakers Knicks as well.

Speaker 6 (09:35):
Yeah, yeah, the Knicks actually were more part of the
equation than maybe some of the other Western Conference teams.
I think the Clippers Celtics would have been interesting, sure,
but I don't even know if i'd put that ahead
of what this is. So I think that this is
this is really really good. And I also I don't
know where the conversation is going to go. But I

(09:58):
am curious on outside of Luca, and it's a very
small storyline and one that you would have much more
insight too than I would. But the development of Jason
Kidd as a head coach, sure, that's fair, you know,
and just in in like if all of a sudden,
now he wins an NBA title. Obviously it helps to
have Luca and helps to have Kyrie, But is it
a different Jason Kidd? Where do we look at him

(10:20):
considering you know, that's that's my wheelhouse, that's your wheelhouse
of the guy that you know, we know his entire
career from high school all the way you know, through now,
and so I find that interesting. But just Celtics Mavericks
on the surface, I think is one of the best
things we could have asked for.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
I agree. I would tell you that if if you
were to ask me honestly before the playoffs began, I
would have said, Eh, that's that's kind of cute, clever,
I don't think it'll happen. I would have I probably
would have brushed it aside, more from the Mavericks standpoint
obviously than the Celtics standpoint. So I'm not sure I
would have taken it that seriously, but now that it's here,

(11:00):
I think it's great. I just you know, we're late
adapters as fans, and I think it's going to take
people a while to realize how good Luca is. As
much as he has his own Nike shoe. You know,
everyone who knows the league falls league. Will you get
tick on a mainstream sports fan? Like last year Jokic,

(11:22):
people were introduced to Jokic based upon how he played
in the NBA Finals. I don't have any doubt that
a good portion, maybe even half, of the people who
watched the NBA Finals last year, had never watched Jokic
play an entire NBA game in his career, and they
did Soka the finals. I think slightly more people watch Luca,

(11:43):
but not a ton more. Not a ton more, And
so it's a different style and I'm going to be
fascinating to see what the numbers are on. But it
is definitely a series in which I'm interested in. You
adding the Kyrie factor, I think the Jason Kidd factor.
Also Missoula and his age right, Missoula in his age

(12:03):
is really really interesting. Remember how he got this job?
And the weird circumstances and what does he do and
can he make the adjustments and can he get Jason
Tanna to play up to his level. On the other side,
he got Anthony Edwards talking about losing the series.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
We never clicked all together as a team in the series,
not even one game.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
I think that was the main thing.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Like, no, like in the last two series we was
all clicking at one time making shots and stuff.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
We wasn't clicking at one time.

Speaker 6 (12:32):
What's your emotions as the season now comes to an end,
about what you accomplished and where it fell?

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Short said, we'll be back next year.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
Do you think this is something that you just have
to go through experience to kind of build on.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Unfortunately is going through it with a loss.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
But I guess so, yeah, I mean I understand the question.
I don't he basically led them. That's why you don't
lead somebody with that answer, you know. But Anthony Edwards
is immensely likable, and the fact that he wasn't nearly
as good as he had been in this series. It's

(13:09):
just a different level. Karl Anthony Towns with the exception
of one game wasn't good enough. It's a different level.
Can you level up an adjuster? Of course does everybody? No,
they do not.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show. Fox Sports Radio. I'll be
having a great day. Doug Gottlieb Show broadcast live with
the tyrag dot com studios. So the Bears were chosen
for Hard Knocks. I don't really understand the negativity towards
Hard Knocks, Like I get, you know, you don't want,

(13:52):
you know, guys like I can't be ourselves be whack
different in TV cameras. True, But I mean, has there
ever been a Hard Knocks that you didn't walk away
liking most of the team and most of the guys involved.
I just I don't understand.

Speaker 5 (14:07):
That I'm going to ask you. I'm going to ask
you in down this. Every year that I've worked here,
so I'm going on my third year, we talk about
who's going to be on Hard Knocks. We talk about
the personalities and the hard knocks, Hard Knocks, Hard Knocks.
Then the actual show comes and none of us watch it.
We just watched the clips.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
I disagree.

Speaker 6 (14:26):
I watch it every week, you do, yes, every single week,
well not during the season, and then the training camp
one there's usually f six episodes.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, I watch it. Yeah, I watched.

Speaker 5 (14:37):
Remember a lot of content about training camp hard knocks
on the show after it started as what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Mmm, it's a great question. It's a really good question.
I would say part of it is there's all kinds
of other stuff to talk about, right, but we did.
We write it's like once you get to football season
and you're into August, like there's a ton of other
stuff going on. But I do think we talked about
the Jets last year because that's that was that was who.

Speaker 6 (15:06):
Was was on it, right, Yeah. I I also think
that last year was a gosh because there were some
down years, but it was a little bit more interesting
with Rogers, but Rogers trying to sell you know, him
being the teammate and all the great things and taking
them to the opera or the player or whatever it

(15:28):
was and doing all that stuff. I felt like we
did talk about it, but I do watch definitely played because.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
We also, yeah, so what else are we supposed to do?
We're gonna play play the show in its entirety.

Speaker 5 (15:40):
No, no, no, I just don't. I don't remember talking about
it as if we've been watching it. You know, did
you see what happened last night? It's more of a
this is what Pro Football Talk put on their side,
and we're going to react to it.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
That's fair. That's probably more on us than it is
on I also think that not as many people have
HBO Max. I would love to see the numb.

Speaker 6 (16:00):
I would agree with that. I would also agree that
this stuff is while it aired last night, it would
have been you know, three or four days, like they
were at the I think the Hall of Fame game
that they played in last year, which was on the
on the Thursday, So then that those highlights of that
don't come out until Tuesday. And sure there may be

(16:21):
some behind the scenes stuff, but I don't know. I
just I watch it. I enjoyed it. I just don't.
I don't think that we ignored it or we just
took clips. I'd also hate that with TV shows like
have just like, oh, that was the show of the night,
let's talk about it the next day, you know, I
don't know.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
Yeah, i'd also and tell me if you agree with
this one. Dan every you know, a lot of teams
have their own kind of quasi hard knocks. So you
combine the fact that there's there's other options out there,
not as many people I think have HBO or HBO Max,
and then there's a bunch of other stories, and I
just I think it's one of those things. We act

(17:00):
like it's really important because it's been a signature kind
of reality show for the league, but the reality is
it is not nearly supported as it used to be.

Speaker 6 (17:07):
I'll also say one quick thing that I also think
that the training camp aspect of it comes at a
time where our lives aren't as busy as they normally
are in the fall, when kids are in school or
games are happening in college football. So when the NFL
has their end season hard Knocks, I haven't watched it,
but I always watch the training camp one more room.
I'm excited for the start of football. When football is here,

(17:29):
I don't need more of it because I've got it
four nights a week already.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
True. Also true, Yeah, are we going to have an
argument as Osterroriver's going to tell me how many wrestlers
can play? Can be in the NFL. Gable is unbelievable
as a wrestler. Mark Dominic joins us in Doug gotlib
show twenty years in front offices, most notably the general
manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What do you think

(17:53):
about one of the most accomplished wrestlers in the history
of the sport trying to play football?

Speaker 7 (18:00):
You know what I'm all for. You know, you've got
ninety man roster for a reason. It's a chance to
sit there and take one of the things. I guess, Doug.
The best thing I can say is when we do
interviews with players that they enter the National Football League
and we ask these guys what sports you've played before
and for like you know, the tight ends or the
DB's wide receivers. You know, you always like to hear
like basketball, right because your quicker feed or maybe the
bigger body doll, you know, the centers or something like that.

(18:22):
Their offensive line and wrestling is another one would love
to hear because we understand they understand legends. Football is
a big, large game. So that's great. You give him
a shassie what you can do understanding that you might
have to be patient with him, and that there's gonna
be a learning curve, but you see some natural flexibility,
natural bends and understanding any placement.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
It's a shot, yeah it is. It is worth it
or the shot. What do you think of Jalen Model's
new deal? Great?

Speaker 7 (18:49):
Happy for Kaal and certainly happy for the Dolls. I mean,
what a combination that got put together there with the
two guys in your contract, Big for two. He knows
he's got his weapons a round it now it's just
a matter of him. I think there's a pecking order
within the organization. Obviously getting Tyreek, then obviously doing Jalen Waddell.
Those players have proven themselves and being elite players in
Nation football. Tua has done a great job. They just

(19:11):
have to struggle to figure out how do we structure
that deal with Tua? And we don't have time on
our side because we have a franchise tag still in
front of Tua as well. So I think that they're
just again looking at the whole picture saying we know
we want these pieces around, We're going to see if
we can figure out them with two. If we can't,
what to go through the season and see what Tua

(19:32):
can do. It would be hard for Tua to want
to sit out of the season and not be there.
So I think they're just trying to find the right
deal for Tua. But a huge move for the Dolphins
in the speed they have on that offense, as you.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
Know, no question about it, and Jayleen lone is a
is a major major factor in that. We talked a
little bit about Hard Knocks and again outside looking in
and look, just be honestly, I've had people approach me
about a form of docuseries, the reality show with with

(20:03):
with with my team, and you know, the only thing
I have holding me back is, yeah, guys can act
a little bit differently when cameras are on them, and
there is there are some things which I don't want.
I don't want broadcasts, you know. So there's a creative
control aspect to it. But in your mind is how

(20:23):
big is the downside to Hard Knocks considering I don't
think as many people watch anymore. There's other options, you know,
teams have their own kind of hard Knocks with their
own groups. What are your thoughts on how how much
how relevant it actually is these days?

Speaker 7 (20:39):
Yeah, you know, I think you make a great point,
and I think it's very true I haven't watched Hard
Knocks now for two straight years, and it's not because
I don't love it. I think it's always fun and
fascinating to see the inside. But it's the way that
social media is the way with all these different Netflix
series or different series you can see on TV, of
different ways to watch these teams. It has kind of
lost its juice, and I think it's not as big
a deal as a work when it first came out

(21:01):
and you know, we're watching revis not the home when
they knock on his door and you're like, where's revis
as the Jets? Who knows? And it was always intrigued.
You're like, boy, no one's ever had access like this before,
and there's just so much more access to it, you know, Yes,
you do worry about like is something going to act
a little different? Is the GM going to be a
little bit, you know, try to be more moxie as
the head coach is suddenly going to want to meet

(21:22):
with every player when he used to not want to
all those little things, Or is the player going to,
you know, act a little differently outside the field And
you're like, that's not who I thought I knew. But
in the end. I don't think it's a distraction it
used to be. You do still have some control over
what's the content is put out there, but I feel
like you do. I think Hard Knocks is going to
come up with something different or something new because I
think we've seen it over and over again. It's kind

(21:43):
of losing its luster.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Stet Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio that said
they have let let their cameras in. If you know,
if you're the genle manager, you know, how do you
like what What are the conversations you have with your
coach or the conversations you have with your quarterback.

Speaker 7 (22:03):
Yeah, So I think number one, when you get close
to being you know, understanding your team, that's on the bubble.
I think that's where you sit with ownership and your
head coach and you come down with the plan if
we're selected, here's how we want to handle everything, Here's
what we're going to do, Here's how we're going to
do it. And I think once you get to that,
then I think what you do is you go in
front of your team and I think the head coach
and the GM both talk about, you know, we've got

(22:25):
a chance to be on a card knocks here or
you know, at the end of OTAs or something like
that and say, hey, look there's a possibility. You know,
I want this team to be you know, you're talking
about representing who they are and what they are, and
what this team is and what we're going to be
as a team. To quarterback you know certainly is going
to be the focus of the show for the most part,
and have that conversation I think one off number one
with the head coach, number one with the GM, and

(22:46):
then one together, all three of us sitting down just
making sure that we're all You're controlling the locker room,
I'm controlling the front office, he's controlling the coaching staff. Like,
let's all be leaders of this thing and make it
represent who we want to be. I remember one year
the Houston Texans we're on it, and that thought that
they really represented themselves well, and I was like, wow, Okay,
the Texans have really kind of put together, you know,
an organization that's you know, putting some nice stuff on tape,

(23:08):
and really the players seem to be doing a good job.
So I think it's it's a matter of just a
lot of communications prior to going into it. To make
sure that you want to be the team that you
think that you know the country can see that you're
proud of, instead of a team that seems like it's
a little bit disarray or too much character. Leads to
undisciplined football team, which may lead to a tough season,
which could lead to an ownership that's not very happy

(23:30):
with anybody.

Speaker 1 (23:32):
What do you make of some of the recent ought
the field troubles of a couple of the Chiefs.

Speaker 7 (23:38):
Yeah, I mean, obviously he had to turn himself in
in the blank, you know, with what he did in
terms of, you know, the problems. I think with Kansas City,
I think it's been one of those things where you watch,
you watch a head coach, you watch the team. There's
a lot of there's a lot of obviously positive things
going around the organization, so they get tons of notoriety,

(23:58):
tons of people looking at them and seeing what they're
doing and why they're kind of like the poster child
of the National Football League. I mean, Isaiah Bugs what
he got arrested because of the animal abuse. If I'm mistaken,
you know, and see I see that, and that's a
that's an ugly thing. But at least you've got himself,
you know, you know, talking through it or trying to
figure out what's going on in terms of what happened.

(24:18):
I think the best thing you can do is put
yourself forward and try to understand exactly what people are
saying about you and what you were about, and then
you just got them before. But I think it's just
an anomaly. I don't think it means Kansas City suddenly
has crossed the line in terms of like willing to
you know, step away from character as something that's important
to and I still think it is. It's just sometimes

(24:39):
it hits you. I remember one year as a GM
in Tampa Bay and we won ten games, lost six,
and we had guys that got you know, pulled over
because they didn't have the turn signal on, and suddenly
it was another player arrested, another player turned over. So
sometimes it just happened with bunches once you're not as
serious as maybe a couple of things that Chiefs had
just run into.

Speaker 1 (24:56):
No question about it. I do think, you know, you look,
it's a fifty three man roster, but really, you know,
you're talking about a ninety man roster. Granted, these are
guys that played and the percentage wise, but I also
would say, like, okay, when it starts to become a trend,
now you've got to start to kind of kind of
take a breath a little bit, take a breath a
little bit. Stug out Leaf Show here on Fox Sports Trade,

(25:18):
Mark Dominic's our guest, course, a long time Scout front
office executive of course, most famously the general manager of
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He joins us every week here
on the Doug Oatlib Show on Fox Sports Radio. How
would you negotiate Trevor Lawrence's new contract?

Speaker 7 (25:35):
Yeah, that's a great question, Doug, And I think I'm
at a point of I like Trevor Lawrence. I think
you obviously many of us feel like he's a good
football player who's who's had some success in the Nation
Football League, but it hasn't been to the level of toua.
It hasn't been the level of the guy that we've
seen get it done and is yet as good as
he can be and coming in the league with such
expectations when you go back and you just sit there

(25:57):
and look at the numbers historically of what he's done. Yeah,
they've had a couple winning seasons, but he's yet to
really break the mold of moving into a quarterback realm.
That's like, what is the thirty touchdown passes? I think
his career highs something like twenty five touchdown passes. And
that's just not going to sit there and make me
want to sit there and go, Okay, Now it's fifty
million dollars a year, and so I think I slow

(26:19):
play this and I couldn't deal with it internally if
I understand that, hey, look, I don't have to rush
into a contract. I think it's a wait and see.
I know that in twenty twenty two he had a
really strong season. In twenty twenty three, it was not
very good. I mean, you looked at the touchdowns interception ratio.
It just wasn't what you would expect out of Trevor Lawrence.
And so I think it's it's patience because he hasn't

(26:39):
really had his breakout year and I would be talking
to his agents this way. You go out and you
put down the three to one or at least four
to one touchdown touchdown interception ratio. You showed me you
can take this team into the postseason and maybe a
little bit further I know that they had the big
win against the Chargers, but I want to see more.
And I just feel like just because he's the number
one pick doesn't mean he tomatically get their contract because

(27:01):
he's still not losing. I need more than that. When
you're starting to talk about the forty five to fifty
five million dollar range, and I think, if you're Trevor Lawrence,
you've got good money in your pocket. I bet on
myself if I was Trevor Lawrence and say, look, I
think I can put a really nice season together here
and I can get myself to the fifty to fifty
five instead of you know, Jacksonville maybe talking about the
forties and forty five. And so I think it's a

(27:22):
process where you have a kind of can do conversation
with you agent saying, hey, I want to pay him,
but the resume isn't where the other guys are, and
I'm not going to go to that realm because he
hasn't been there yet. And so you know, if he
want some plan of the year, I'll pay for success
and i'll pay for production. If that means I have
to pay that much more, I'm willing to do it

(27:44):
as a GM because I want that too, and I'm
happy to pay a quarterback that throws thirty two touchdowns
and has ten interceptions and wins the playoff game let's go.
But he has yet to break twenty five touchdowns in
the pass in a single season. I just don't feel
like that's I don't think that's the number to sit there.
We've got the for you know, six more years. I
think it's let's see what he can do in one
more year.

Speaker 1 (28:04):
Mark Dominic joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Tradier last week, we talked about the nflpa's
desire to kind of slow roll into training camp but
do away essentially with these these OTAs from the front
office side. How does that land with you?

Speaker 7 (28:21):
I don't like it at all. I mean, I understand
what they're trying to say. You know, we start to
get right rid of more and more things. I mean,
you got to remember some of these OTAs. That's some
of the ways that these young players actually make money.
Clubs pay players to show up at their facility and
actually earn money for working out. I mean, and in
some of these guys that are maybe that were of
the practice squad last year or even rookies. You know,

(28:42):
I think a lot of people look at NFL players
and just assume, well, they're all multimillionaires. There's a lot
of guys NFL clubs that made one hundred thousand dollars
or two hundre thousand dollars and maybe even five hundred thousands.
But Uncle Sam came in and said, they actually have
fifty hundred thousand or two fifty and then they have
to live for a year, and maybe they came from nothing,
so they don't have very much. So when you get
to these OTAs, it's a chance for these guys to
earn a couple hundred dollars a day by being in

(29:02):
the facility, they get paid to work out. You get
rid of OTAs. That's just another little olive branch to
young players that are trying to figure out how do
I make it in this league? And I think it's
still is. You know, we worry about the contact and
things like that. If we just take away the OTAs,
I just think that there's a little bit more danger
in terms of you know, maybe some of the work
guys are doing and also the preparedness that we're going

(29:25):
to see if we're really wanting to go to eighteen games,
or the NFL wants to go eighteen games two preseason
and try to knock down more preseaving games. You start
getting rid of OTA, I think you're get to slop
your product, and I don't think anybody wants that. And
I think you might see more injuries because the OTAs
as our fans probably know. But it's a slow process.
You go through phase one, Phase two, Phase three. Phase

(29:45):
one it's just working out. There's no on the field activity.
You're just getting your body to the NFL acclamation of
where it's got to be. Phase two it's kind of
more walkthroughs. In phase three you can throw on some
helmets and start moving. But it's a process also that
they've done a good job with it. I don't think it.
I don't. I think it'd be bad to get rid
of it. That's not because I'm old school NFL. It's
because I think it's good for the players to kind

(30:06):
of slowly get themselves in shaped together.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
That's Mark dominic On's he know he's only spent his
entire professional life for the Nation Football League, and he
joins us every week here on the Doug Gotlip Show.
Mark You're the best. Have a great summer weekend. We're
getting closer and closer to football. Thanks for being our guest.

the Caspa.

Speaker 6 (31:51):
It's like I'm watching MTV and it says the clash
and then in parentheses featuring Doug Gottlieb, it's like the
you know a special one. All right, it is a Friday,
time for our new game to take hold. Our game
today is I got DIBs, all right for four pieces

(32:16):
of information we're going to try to get through today.
And again, if you're just joining us, you're listening to
the show for the first time on a Friday. Maybe
I haven't listened on a Friday in a while. We
used to do Psychic, but we've moved away from Psychic
and we just basically we.

Speaker 1 (32:29):
Saw everything coming.

Speaker 6 (32:31):
Yes, there's also not a lot to look ahead to
right now because the finals is so far into the future.
But we are going to just take DIBs on certain things,
things that we like, things that are our favorite and
we open it up to not only Doug and myself
but also Jason Stewart and Iowa Sam.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
All Right, guys, I.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
Don't like them. Oh I'm sorry, Mike's on my bad.

Speaker 2 (32:51):
Okay, all right? Key player for the NBA Finals? Who's
that guy?

Speaker 1 (32:56):
Got?

Speaker 6 (32:59):
Doug's got Luka? Who's that player that we're going to
talk about? Because I'll got DIBs on Kyrie because of
all that comes around him and about him, and if
he doesn't perform, I do think it will be very
difficult for the for the Mavericks. So I think Kyrie
is gonna have to play up to his game.

Speaker 5 (33:17):
Can I Can I get DIBs on Jason Tatum?

Speaker 2 (33:19):
Jason Tatum?

Speaker 5 (33:20):
Yes, he's got to reverse the narrative, the narrative that
he can't win the big one. He's been here before,
but he can't lead his team to the championship.

Speaker 8 (33:33):
You got DIBs on anyone, Sam, I'll take dibbs on
Drew Holliday. That's good, good one for his defense? Right,
what's he going to do against this Mavericks team? Who
will he guard?

Speaker 2 (33:45):
Doug? Who will he be matched up against?

Speaker 1 (33:48):
I would say a lot of Kyrie Irving?

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Yeah, so that'll be interesting, true Holiday the best.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
Also, I think another reason is because he was part
of that trade with Damian Lillard, and you know, if
he wins another championship after leaving Good Point Milwaukee where
they won a championship with him, and here they are,
you know, kind of a mess right now. I think
his his overall value to the to most people will

(34:15):
go up.

Speaker 6 (34:16):
I would change my nickname to the ring getter if
that happened, because that's what Drew Holliday is getting. Maybe
maybe a little too soon on that one, all right,
moving on.

Speaker 5 (34:26):
I don't know if I like that. I think lord
of the rings, Lord of the.

Speaker 6 (34:30):
All right, I just thought this guy goes out and
gets rings. But by the way, last night, did the
Fever play last night? Did the Indiana Fever play last night?

Speaker 2 (34:42):
Yes? They did. Hey, I have another nickname here. How
about this it rings? Drew? Okay, all right?

Speaker 6 (34:47):
Last night the Indiana Fever played Good and Mavericks Iowa.
Samlyn Clark playing for the Fever or Luca Garza in
garbage time for the Timberwolves.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
What are you watching?

Speaker 1 (35:02):
Ooh that is man, that's when world to collide.

Speaker 8 (35:05):
Yeah. I love seeing Luca gars that get in there.

Speaker 6 (35:09):
And it's rare. But he did play away jumper last night, Yeah,
he did play.

Speaker 8 (35:14):
He has played in a handful of playoff games this
year because they have had some big leads and he
is one of the most. I mean a bench guy
is he's very efficient.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Or Clark.

Speaker 8 (35:25):
I'm still gonna take Clark, all right, but love me
some Luca Garza.

Speaker 2 (35:28):
All right.

Speaker 6 (35:28):
Moving and I got DIBs this on the heels of
the college football matchups that were released for TV schedules
early on in the season. Guys, your favorite school to
see at a new conference in college football.

Speaker 8 (35:41):
I got DIBs on Oregon. I'll tell you why. A
lot expected of them next year. They're in the Big ten.
Them in Ohio State, I believe tied for was it
over under ten and a half wins from Vegas, So
a lot expected of the Ducks in a new conference.

Speaker 2 (35:56):
We'll see what they do.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
Yeah, they got a big quack problem going through their program.

Speaker 6 (36:01):
Just really full of I got dims on Oklahoma because
I think Texas that's a great one.

Speaker 2 (36:06):
I think Texas is.

Speaker 6 (36:07):
Primed to win next season, but it's what does happen
to Oklahoma?

Speaker 1 (36:11):
I completely agree that's a really really good one.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
They become Nebraska.

Speaker 1 (36:19):
Yep, yep, that'd be my guess.

Speaker 5 (36:21):
That's great. I got on USC by the way USC
It's the one team that I do follow closer than others.
I kind of want Lincoln Riley to get his come up,
and he needs to be humbled a little bit, so
I'm kind of looking forward to seeing him get beat up.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
Okay, so we said, we said football, right foot football. Ye, yeah,
I mean you guys took a lot of them. But
I'm gonna go to Texas, all right, you know, because
you know, Texas was a big trigger that all none
of this happens without Texas, and like they got to

(36:59):
a place to where they were the best team in
the Big twelve finally, which they should be. Now you know,
they're swinging, swing them swimming in a pool that is
the right size for all things Texas. Let's see how
they Let's see how they.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Handle it, all right? Final one?

Speaker 6 (37:15):
Now that much about past the Memorial Day weekend, Summer
vacation destination American version, staying in the States, summer vacation
destination all American road trip.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
What do you guys got DIBs on?

Speaker 5 (37:32):
I got I got DIBs on the the Eastern Seaboard Baseball.
I've never been to Fenway?

Speaker 1 (37:39):
Is that yeah?

Speaker 2 (37:40):
Is that gonna work then perfect. Yeah, I'm fine with that.

Speaker 5 (37:43):
Yeah, Fenway, Former Shay, New York, Philadelphia, you know all
those all those cities.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
I like that.

Speaker 1 (37:50):
I got DIBs on Door County never been right.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
You're gonna love it.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
It's right out my door into Door County.

Speaker 2 (37:56):
I got.

Speaker 8 (37:56):
I got DIBs on Mount Rushmore because you can also
a Black Hills bad Lands not apart Crazy Horse memorial.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
And we're at the time.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
Game.

Speaker 4 (38:06):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
