thousand recommended sellers tirat dot com. It's the way tire
buying should be. Well, what do we have here? A

(00:45):
bit of a plot twist. I woke up today from
a crazy number of uh of text messages, a crazy
number of text messages from friends in the basketball industry,

(01:06):
crazy number, and they're all like, is this real? Is
this real? Is this real? Like, I don't know what
you're talking about? And then I turned on the Twitter machine.
It was very early and I saw Woja's tweet and
I'm like, wait a second, didn't Shams just say JJ reddick?
And I had heard that JJ Reddick was or they
were the Lakers are trying to reach out to find staffing.

(01:28):
So for JJ, so what possibly could happen? Well, I
can tell you what I have a These are just
this is just guesses, maybe educated guesses. So the thing
about trying to get a head coaching job, and it
took me a long time. The first time I interviewed

(01:48):
for a head coaching job was two thousand and eight.
It's twenty twenty four I got a head coaching job.
So I can tell you unequivocally that if if you
are joined a discussion about becoming a head coach, do
you know what else you need? You need a plan
of execution, right first thirty days, first sixty days, first

(02:14):
nine days. Who are you gonna hire? And what I
had heard in regards in regards to JJ Reddick was
people around the Lakers were reaching out to see who
was interested in being on his staff. And you had
heard about the makeup potentially of the staff. So here's
my guess. Here's my guess is that there was a

(02:38):
good number of people that were like, you know, what
this might work? What's the plan? And JJ's plan was like,
I'll just we'll hire guys, We'll hire a staff. You know,
we'll put it together. And I'm sure you reach out
to a couple of coaches. You know, James Barrego, who's
up to being potentially being a head coach, maybe in Cleveland,

(03:00):
doesn't want to be the assistant at a place that
he wanted to be the head coach, and maybe he
said no thanks, and at some point they said, wait,
this is not really a plan. This is an idea.
The idea is great. You gotta have the plan. You
have to you have to give people the view of

(03:21):
what it's gonna look like. You do it in recruiting.
I have to do it in recruiting. And last night
I was at this amazing dinner and you know, I'm
constantly stepping out to make recruiting calls. And in recruiting,
I don't have I mean, I can show people film

(03:43):
of my AAU team's playing, or my team's in Israel playing,
but I don't have this long resume. So what I
have to do is let me paint the picture of
what it's going to look like for you. Here's the
guys on my staff, here's the guys on my team.
Here's how we're going to play. You have to project
this imaginary visual image of what it's going to be like.

(04:07):
And for JJ, he had an idea, of course, I
can coach. And the truth is that in coaching, I
have no doubt that JJ Reddick could coach tomorrow in
the NBA and he'd be fine. He'd probably be really good.
But it's all of the other parts of coaching that

(04:29):
is missing, because you have to take people from the
place of hey, that's an interesting idea to what it
actually looks like and feels like and what the how
it's gonna all work together. So while that's taking place,

(04:50):
I'm sure there's the like, guys, what are we doing here?
You know? What are we doing here? And hey, did
you you know Danny Hurley's new contract hasn't yet made.
Did you know that Lebron James supposedly this from Brian
Windhorse earlier today, told the Lakers don't pick a coach

(05:12):
because of me. Pick a coach for Anthony Davis and
for beyond. But Lebron wants to be coached. Anthony Davis
wants to be coached. And while you don't have an
NBA championship in your resume, the fact is that in
order to win in the NBA, you have to have
the respect to the locker room. To have the respect

(05:33):
to the locker room, you have to have won. And
while most college coaches haven't done well stepping up to
the NBA, Larry Brown has. There have been others, but
Danny has only been truly successful the last two or
three years. Danny is still not still he's over himself.

(05:56):
He's never been about him or about acting. Like his penness,
magic pen. He knows how to give credit to the
players and to the other coaches, and to just be
a facilitator for this great program and kind of be
the entertainer on the sidelines. Danny, you can sit with
and say what would it look like for you to

(06:17):
be the head coach? And he because he's recruited, because
he's done it, because he sold the vision before, that's
an easy vision to sell in the future. My guess,
and again just a guess, is that JJ hiring JJ
was an idea, but there wasn't a vision for what

(06:39):
it would look like provided with that idea, he didn't
have the plan a place. I'm gonna hire this coach
and that coach and this coach, and here's we're gonna
bring in personnel wise, and here's what we're gonna do
for that other other guy. JJ was like, I want
to coach Lebron likes me, He's got my respect. You
guys fill out that. You guys fill out the coaching
staff will make it work. Yeah, what's it going to

(06:59):
look like? Eh, just a guess. But my guess is
that this feels like there's something to it. And oh yeah,
by the way, that doesn't mean this is a done deal.

(07:20):
You know, coaches have gone all the way to the
finish line. Coaches have taken jobs before. The one difference
is for Danny is he did tell his Yukon team
today that he was talking with the Lakers, and when
you do that, you're opening up the potential for Pandora's
box because they got done with their workouts today and

(07:41):
I'm sure their phones are blowing up because you have
thirty days if your coach leeds to be in the portal,
and then they got to figure out who gets the job.
Probably somebody who's on staff, either Kamani Young or Luke Murray,
who gets to come with him, who stays, because those
are outside of those two, those are hard core Yukon
guys that probably stay, and then what's Danny's vision for

(08:06):
his own staff? What does that look like? But we
have said that college basketball is more reflective of the
NBA now than it ever has been. And you have
a former player who does I understand when you look
him in the sideline you think he's a crazy person.
He's not that way towards his players. Towards his players

(08:31):
players is very different, demanding, but very different. And I'm
guessing that the vision is far easier to sell than
the idea was for JJ Riddick. Thanks for listening to

We've all used different tools.

Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer and Mental Wealth podcast

Speaker 1 (09:36):
All right, this look, we'll get to Goodman in a second.
There's it's crazy on how this story has kind of
taken over the sports world because tonight is also the
first game of the NBA Finals, And what would I think,
here's the possibility the Celtics our favorite tonight, their favorites
to win the series. I think the Mavericks are going

(09:56):
to win tonight. I think they're going to win the series.
But let's what's really interesting is how I feel like
we give will give athletes a bit of a pass
on one poor run in the NBA Finals two, it
becomes the narrative becomes the narrative. Now Lebron is a

(10:20):
little bit different. He wasn't he was. There was nothing
bad with him when he first went to the finals
with the Cabs, and obviously he struggled at times against
the Mavericks. There were other issues with that with the
Heat team when they lost to the MAVs. But for

(10:41):
Jason Tatum, like that's what's in front of him. If
he wins, everything from the previous NBA finals has forgotten.
But if he doesn't, now of a sudden, it becomes
the narrative. Jason Tatum is not an NBA Finals caliber,
big time closing player. And you know, look, the matchups
are different. We don't know what prezingis brings to the table.

(11:01):
We don't know how healthy he'll be, how much he
can play, and even if he's healthy he can play,
how effective he'll be because he hasn't played in quite
a while. On the other hand, we do know about
Luca and Kyrie in big moments. And I know you
can't always carry over and usually shouldn't carry over big

(11:21):
moments from college or big moments from international competition Olympics,
but there is something to Luca and how he's played
in close out games, big moments in the playoffs this year,
and then you start to think, okay, we also run
European championship. He won a FOBA Championship with Real Madrid.
That guy's seen all of the toughest environments in the world.

(11:43):
Boston is going to do nothing to him that he
hasn't seen. I have full faith that in Luka Doncik
and his ability to perform when the lights are at
their brightest. I can't say I have that with Jason Tatum.
I can't because I just don't have anything tangible to
point to that goes, oh, yeah, this is where he

(12:05):
did it previously. That's where he did previously. So that's
where I am. On the NBA Finals, It's like, do
I get why the Do I get why the Celtics
are favorite? Of course, of course I get why the
Celtics are favorite. Doesn't mean I'm gonna pick him because

(12:26):
you gotta show me your you know, don't tell me
you're pregnant, show me the baby. That's that's really where
it is. Boy. The Chiefs have had a tough How
about the Chiefs off season with all the off the
field turmoil and then BJ Thompson has cardiac arrest and
a seizure. Ikes, yikes, But let's get back to the

(12:48):
story of the day. The story of the day is
that the Lakers are preparing a massive offer for Danny Hurley.
They had a preliminary contract primary contact with Hurley, and
both sides are playing to escalat discussions in the coming days.
This is from Adrian Warzonowski. Hurley has been the forefront
of the Lakers search for the beginning of the process,
even when the organization has done their due diligence interviewing

(13:09):
several other candidates. Rob Polinka and Jeanie Buss are eager
to formally discuss with Hurley their vision for marrying his
dominant program built upon tactic acumen and elite player development
with the Lakers brand. Now they want a legit coach

(13:29):
and somebody to develop people. I don't think it's a
crazy idea. I just don't, Monsei. What do you think
the of the heel turn or the pivot from what
felt like it was gonna be JJ's job to now
maybe it's Danny Hurley's job.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
A little bit surprised surprise in the sense because it
seemed like it was a shoeing right, like it was
for sure going to be JJ.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
I think we all thought that.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
So I think I'm surprised of the because I really
thought it was gonna be JJ. But I'm not surprised
that they did look beyond JJ. You know what, I mean, yeah, yeah,
because JJ, he has no coaching experience and not that
he's not going to be a good coach or anything.
And obviously he has a relationship with Lebron that that's
what the Lakers want, or anybody who coaches Lebron. You

(14:17):
want the coach to have a relationship with Lebron that
he likes and he approves. So I think we all
just thought it was a shoe in and so I'm
surprised about it.

Speaker 5 (14:26):
And uh, you know, Dan Hurley.

Speaker 4 (14:28):
That's a that's a big, a big ask that you
that you're trying to take away from Yukon.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
Yeah, I mean, if the Lakers want to, you can.
There's no sour cap. You can pay him whatever he wants. Yes, yeah, yeah,
go ahead, right right.

Speaker 6 (14:45):
It's it's yeah, Hi, I'm just trying to make sense
of this and maybe you can help me, Doug or
Moncy whichever. But I I'm not sure how this makes
sense for either side other than it seems to be
a name attracted to another name.

Speaker 5 (14:59):
For Hurley, You've got a very good thing going at Yukon.

Speaker 6 (15:03):
And I know there's been people like Brad Stevens, but
usually for a college coach going to the NBA. You've
already got a deck stacked against you, and now you're
going to the Lakers, where any relationship you would have
with Lebron James is understood that it's going to be
in the short term and it's usually very volatile and
a lot of other coaches have kind of come through there.

(15:24):
If you're successful, then yeah, maybe you're set up to
be the Lakers coach for whatever the post Lebron future
looks like. But you're giving up a lot from Yukon
to go to and you've got a great thing going
at Yukon to go to the Lakers, a big thing.
But it's such a volatile situation. And on the other
side of it for the Lakers, is this really someone

(15:46):
who's going to mesh with Lebron James? This is really
going to be an arrangement that Lebron James is going
to really enjoy. I've got so many more questions about
this that I probably shouldn't. It should seem like a
really good race, but I've just got it just brings
up to Okay.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
So I can't help me out. What do they go
through the questions sequential order? So you have a bunch
of Yeah, you have a bunch of questions. I'll answer
him for what I think.

Speaker 6 (16:12):
Go ahead, So I guess why would Dan Hurley like
go into this kind of a volatile situation right now?

Speaker 1 (16:20):
Why is it volatile?

Speaker 5 (16:22):
Because this is Lebron's history? I think, like Lebron is
short term for this job?

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Sure?

Speaker 5 (16:28):
Yeah, sure?

Speaker 1 (16:29):
So. I mean again, if you get a five year deal,
you know, in the fifty sixty million dollar range, like whatever, Like,
I mean, how many chances did you get to coach
the Lakers?

Speaker 7 (16:42):
Right?

Speaker 1 (16:43):
And you have Anthony Davis and you have Austin Reeves,
you know, I mean, why would he Because it's the NBA,
It's because of the Lakers. And and I'll tell you
like that, what do you not have to worry about
when you're an NBA coach? You do? I mean, obviously
there's the academics, academic peace, which everybody will tell you
is not a not a factor, but it's still on

(17:05):
some level factor. But the massive turnover on your roster
every year. You don't have that in the NBA. You
just don't. You know, He'll have Alex Carabin I think,
is the only real rotation player who's going to come
back for next year. She're constantly constantly doing it. And
I also think that, like, I'm not at that level,

(17:26):
but if you're at this level where you're paying guys
that you don't think are really worth what you're paying them,
it just doesn't feel doesn't feel good. Whereas when you
get the NBA, it's just about basketball, you know, just
about just about basketball. What else? Give me one other question,
then I'll get to know.

Speaker 6 (17:42):
I just I guess, I guess it's it's I guess
I'm struggling with this, Like as a good like illustrator,
I think there was a good article out about how
a lot of bands have been trying to, you know,
sell out arenas and they're realizing it's too big for
them and going back to two smaller villars. Every time
every time I see and they're they're always happier with it.
And I always saw every time I see this kind
of jump where it feels kind of forced with this

(18:04):
big name who's big in college going to this pro
job that is volatile, but it has a lot of
good prestige to it. It just more often than not,
it just doesn't work out. And I do wonder how
many regrets there are, but those regrets won't happen until
the future.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Let's welcome in Jeff Goodman. He joins us here on
the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Of course
you can hear Field of sixty eight where every download podcast.
You can see him on Stadium Sports as well. Jeff,
what's your reaction to the news?

Speaker 7 (18:32):
I was shocked, like everybody. I mean, I just saw it.
Then a couple of weeksigo in India, I've been texted
with him and nothing, nothing, So I was I was
surprised because again, I mean, Jim's just put out the
three couple of days ago that and everybody kind of
thought it was just JJ Reddick and that's why nothing
had been done right. They had to wait for the
NBA Finals to finish, for JJ to finish doing his job,

(18:55):
and then they were going to announce JJ Redick is
the next head coach of the Lakers. And yeah, this
one's a little.

Speaker 8 (19:01):
Bit shocking, only because I've always said, Doug, I don't
know if Dan Hurley translates to the NBA and not
because of the ex's and oh's.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
I mean, he's terrific at that we know that, but
more because of the ego involved and the fact that
ken NBA guys handled Dan Hurley. You know, like again
the college game, it's all about the players in the
in the in the college game, it's all about the coaches.
In the NBA game, it's all about the players. I
just don't know, Like Brad Stevens worked right, no ego,

(19:35):
low key all that he worked for a while in
the NBA. I don't know if Dan, and again I
respect a hell out of Dan, I don't know if
he's gonna be able to change enough to whereas he's
gonna be able to coach these guys the way he
wants to coach them.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
See my perception of Dan at Yukon, especially recently, is yes,
he coaches some hard, but he's not a crazy person,
you know that Christ.

Speaker 7 (20:00):
For the the when the part Doug is the part
with the fans, in the in the in the officials
like that part of It's gonna have to calm down,
Like he can't be doing some of the stuff to
Tony Brothers. Tony Brothers will honestly toss him out of
the game in about three minutes.

Speaker 1 (20:21):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, look, I don't think there's
any doubt that he's gonna have to tone that down.
Can he can he handle a groom full of men?
Can he is Danny? Is Danny over himself enough to
where he can make it about them not about him?
That's the that's the biggest question. I think the answer

(20:41):
is yes.

Speaker 7 (20:42):
But I'm part man, he's part dude. And again, you
get him off the court, you know this, Doug Like,
is there a better guy to deal with like off
the court in terms of just having fun? Like like
Lebron will love him. They love Dan Hurley off the
court because you can, you can screw around him, you
can have fun with him. You can you know, you

(21:04):
can rip on them, He'll rip on on your back
all that, you know. I just think, you know, some
of that stick has the he's got to tone it down.
And the other part, for you know, the problem is
no matter who that is going to get that job,
Doug Like, I just don't know how how you can
succeed with a forty year old Lebron. But you're going
to worry about whether he's going to be healthy enough

(21:26):
to make it through the year. At some point, his
body's probably going to fail him and Anthony Davis, whose
body I know it's been better the last couple of years,
but whose body isn't exactly you know, it's failed him
plenty over the years. And then you've got a bunch
of just role players. So but but having said all that,
if I'm Dan Hurly, I take a shot off this thing.
I absolutely take a shot.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
I would two wish the Lakers. You've won two titles
and you have basically a whole new team for next year.
So it's not like he's leaving these kids. Adler's caravan
is the one kid he like man that would really
sell you. And I'm and I'm guessing though that they
probably keep it in that in that same family of
all those guys on the bench.

Speaker 7 (22:07):
I'm not so sure. I'm not so sure of that.
I was with you this morning on that. I'm not
so sure that they're going to keep it in the
family just to keep the players.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
Okay, I think would Kimani get it? Or who would
have the best shot?

Speaker 7 (22:25):
Come on here, I'm just telling you, I don't I
don't know.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
I understand, I understand. Who of those two do you
think would have the better shot?

Speaker 7 (22:31):
Come on? Hee would have the better shot for sure.
He's the associate. He's been with Dan longer. Kimani Young
would be to me, if you're going to keep it
in house, But listen, if I'm a betting man, I'm
saying that, I'm now thinking they're probably not going to
keep it in house. If I had to guess, who.

Speaker 1 (22:49):
Would it be? Who's the first call that that that
would make sense?

Speaker 7 (22:54):
So my first call is Bruce Pearl. That's my first call,
New England guy. I got the personality, got the fight. Now.
I don't know how old's Bruce?

Speaker 1 (23:04):
Now?

Speaker 7 (23:05):
What's Bruce six sixty three? That's the only the only worry, right,
the only worry is number one? How much does Bruce
have left in the tank to do this through David
bennettict the A D. You don't want to have to
make another higher in three years, you don't really And
I don't know if Bruce has got more than three
or five left to do this. And does Bruce really

(23:27):
want to come up to Yukon and and deal with that?
Like he's got a good thing going at Auburn, he's
got a son there. I don't know if you can
get Steven the job at Auburn yet. I'm not sure
the deal. He's not written in the contract is the
next head coach yet? Maybe he can use it as leverage.
Bruce would be one Sean Miller, one b for me.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
Okay, I don't know if they go to Sean Miller ut,
but okay, who else?

Speaker 7 (23:58):
I mean, I can't come up with a the names.
I don't know, Like there aren't a lot because most
of these guys they know it's a biot, a seventeen
million Scott. There is not going from Baylor to stores.
We know that there's no shot of that one. You know,
Billy Donovan. Last I checked, he's still employed, And uh,
what do you got?

Speaker 1 (24:19):
What about? What about Speedy Claxton?

Speaker 7 (24:22):
Oh, I mean it's a jump, like you're not winning. Yeah,
I mean I love Speedy, but that's a jump. That's
a I mean, you're gonna go speeding. You might as
well in Holloway.

Speaker 1 (24:31):
Yeah, that's the other one.

Speaker 7 (24:33):
Yeah. Like Shaheem would be good. I like Sheheen Jehan's
done a good job. He'd be solid.

Speaker 1 (24:38):
You know, again, it would be hard to leave your
alma mater and go in conference. I don't think it's
incredibly hard to leave your old water because they're not
as well funded. But in conference that could be.

Speaker 7 (24:49):
Yeah, harder, harder, but you're gonna be.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
My thought. My thought is though that that Danny and look,
Danny is a bit of a force of nature. But
Danny was it was like he was Key did well
at Rhode Island. It wasn't killing the world at Rhode Island,
but it was more here's a Northeast guy, he's got
that edge to him. Foim player in the Big East
gets it. Like I think Sahen and Speedy are those
two type of guys that that they that they could

(25:13):
circle in on. Obviously it would be completely different than
how Danny's done it, but they've both both been very
successful in their own right.

Speaker 7 (25:21):
Totally totally. I just think those are those are second
tier third.

Speaker 1 (25:25):
Sure, sure, but you're also doing the go after the
name thing, right, Bruce is a name, Bruce's a right
whereas don't.

Speaker 7 (25:33):
You have to don't you? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (25:35):
Did they go after her name when they hired Danny?

Speaker 7 (25:38):
They couldn't. There were the American that Funnic Association.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
I understand, I understand, I get I get that it's
different now, but you know, top.

Speaker 7 (25:46):
Five job again, it is now Dan Hurley has elevated
this thing where there probably aren't five more sought after
jobs in America right now. Now again follow now do
you want to? Now?

Speaker 1 (25:57):
Do you want to follow a guy who went back
to back national titles?

Speaker 7 (26:00):
I mean you got to find the right guy, right like,
the right personality as the guy who's been again at
Auburn at Tennessee.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
Oh no, no, if you get Bruce, you get Bruce because
he's gonna he's he gets everybody into it. I just
don't know if Bruce, if that's what he wants to do, well.

Speaker 7 (26:20):
You can win a title at you cut? Can you
win a title at Auburn? I mean you've got to
the final four?

Speaker 1 (26:24):
Why can't you win a title at Auburn?

Speaker 7 (26:26):
I'm asking you, I'm saying it's harder, it's harder to win.
Could you? Yes? This is always your thing? When I
asked you, right like, can can they? Yes? They can?
Will they? I don't think so?

Speaker 1 (26:41):
Fair? Fair, It's it's a it's a fair point, real
Quicklet's Celtics MAVs to and I. Jeff Goodman joined us
here on the Doug Otleb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
What's your level of faith that Jason Tatum can to
the top level of his game in.

Speaker 7 (27:02):
The series eleven of ten eleven of ten, I'm not
worried about him at all at all. Seriously, I'm not
worried about Jason Tatum at all. I'm more worried about
Jalen Brown. Although I will say this, It's going to
be really interesting to see who Derek Jones is going
to be on Who Because Derek Jones is an elite defender,
right elite. So do you throw him on you start

(27:24):
him on Tatum. I assume you start PJ. Washington on Tatum,
you start Derek Jones on Jalen Brown. Jalen Brown hasn't
seen anybody even bad in the postseason this year, so
that's going to be the interesting one to me is
Jalen Brown. Does he continue his play from last series?
If he does, this is a rap. There's no way

(27:46):
Dallas beats Boston if Jalen Brown plays the way he
did last series. I don't worry about Tatum. The thing
with Tatum that everybody needs to get over is the
dude just makes the right play so often now Boston
fans are never happy with what he does right and
a couple of years ago was ah, he took bad shots.

(28:06):
It didn't pass the ball enough, didn't find his teammates.
Now that's all he does, and they yelled at him
for not being as assertive. So he'll shoot the ball
better from three. But Jason Tana, I think the Celtics
win this in seven and Tatum wins MVP and showing
his all round game and condescending Kyrie. We'll see what happens.

Speaker 1 (28:24):
Well, you're just you're still better about Kyrie? Still better?

Speaker 7 (28:29):
Great he is, Hey, Doug, Doug, I'm gonna give him
the credit he deserves. He actually guards now. He looked
like for years he didn't guard anybody.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
No, no, but now he al, says Derek Lively and
Gafford behind him. So that that helps you, as that
helps you as well. Yeah, good, all right, Well we'll
probably touch basically again. If this happens, this becomes a
real thing, but right now it's just preliminary stages. Thanks
for our guest.

Speaker 7 (28:54):
That's good man, that's such.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
By the way, Jeff could have been not calling me, coach.
What's the deal? Did you good? Call our best guys?

Speaker 6 (30:01):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 4 (30:06):
Hello there, Hello, It's how I keep track of my week.
So it's Thursday. What are we plying, chrass.

Speaker 5 (30:16):
I feel a draft? That's yeah.

Speaker 7 (30:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (30:20):
I had to ask her because I could not, Like,
I was like, is it thursday? We must be in Berlin.

Speaker 4 (30:24):
He must be exactly exactly. This is coming down the
hills of the latest story with the Lakers trying to
pursue Yukon head coach Dan Hurley. So we are going
to draft which college coach doesn't have to be Basketball,
doesn't have to be Football, can be whatever. Which college
coach you would prefer to coach your pro team, so

(30:45):
we can go whatever whatever sport you want.

Speaker 5 (30:48):
Well, draft in a snake order. This is gonna be
the order.

Speaker 4 (30:50):
We're gonna start with you, Doug, then Chris, then Me,
then Ryan, back to Ryan, me Chris, and with you Doug.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Okay, ready, yeah that works for me. Like I gotta
think here, yeah, option pick. Yeah, you're the first pick
in the last one pick the first song. Let me
let me think of the first pick who I don't
think he works. I don't think he works.

Speaker 4 (31:17):
Okay, Okay, ahead, all right, Doug, who you got for
Bill Self. Okay, all right, why why is that your
first one off the board?

Speaker 1 (31:26):
Unbelievably unbelievably successful. He just has a great way about
him with the players, and that he coaches them hard,
but they still love him.

Speaker 7 (31:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
He's not like married to a set system where I
have to play this way. Uh. He's a confident guy,
but he does the aweshucks. You know, he's from Oklahoma
City thing. Just Bill Self? Was that guy?

Speaker 4 (31:51):
All right? All right?

Speaker 5 (31:51):
I like that one. All right, Chris, you are up. Okay,
Well let's see.

Speaker 6 (31:57):
So it is our proteins, right, yes, okay, So this
is a problem because I'm not replacing Dan Campbell now
right now, so that the most pressing would probably be
the pistons. So let's think about this. I really like
what Kelvin Samson's done at Houston. Ok yeah, I think
he's he's my pick to eventually place Monty Williams. They've
already cleared out the front office in Detroit. I would

(32:20):
like to see a I think, you know, with what
he's done there, just making Houston put him back on
the board and just the style they run down there,
like I could see that. Yeah, yeah, I could see
Kelvin's in Detroit.

Speaker 4 (32:31):
All right, So I'm up next. I wasn't thinking of
my Clippers because I like TYLERU.

Speaker 5 (32:35):
But my pick could work for.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
The Clippers because I need somebody to light a fire
up there. You know what, I'm gonna take Bob Knight.
Only three titles in comparison to other teams, but I
like a.

Speaker 1 (32:45):
Little bit of a short fuse. I like a little
bit of a hothead.

Speaker 4 (32:48):
I like a little bit of a volatile, you know, personality.
So I'm gonna take Bob Knight with my third overall pick.

Speaker 5 (32:56):
Ryan, you are up, Okay.

Speaker 9 (32:58):
I did not realize ghosts were on the ballard, so.

Speaker 1 (33:03):
Going everywhere all over the place.

Speaker 9 (33:06):
Well, shoot, maybe maybe I should stake John Wooden. Then no,
it's okay, I will It's all right, it's I will
stick to active.

Speaker 5 (33:15):
It's fine.

Speaker 9 (33:17):
Let's go to football, okay, because it's because we've still
got football on the board here. I'll take Kirby Smart.

Speaker 4 (33:22):
Kirby Smart, all right, yeah.

Speaker 9 (33:25):
Bring in uh obviously you know great at developing talent. Sure,
so uh let's bring in Kirby Smart. And let's okay,
let's have fun and and stick with that. Go back
to basketball. Okay, I'll right, I'll take Rick Patino here
at five.

Speaker 1 (33:41):
All right, Now, you do know Rick Patino has coach
twice in the NBA.

Speaker 9 (33:46):
Correct, yes, yes, but given that he's an active college coach.

Speaker 6 (33:50):
All right, Bird walking through that door, fam.

Speaker 1 (33:56):
Not walking through that door. Kevin mchael is not walking through.

Speaker 5 (33:59):
That My favorite rants of all time.

Speaker 1 (34:03):
Right, so it's mine.

Speaker 4 (34:05):
Back to me, back to me, yes, all right. So
I won't pick a ghost here for Ryan's sake. You
know what I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna pick Don Staley.
She's a winner, she is a constant winner. So I'm
gonna throw a lady out there. Don Staley, please come
coach my team any day, any day.

Speaker 1 (34:23):
Coach a men's team.

Speaker 5 (34:25):
Yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 4 (34:27):
I feel like one of the most important things when
you would want a coach, whether it's a man or
a woman, is that they know how to win. I
think that's the one the most important thing. So I'm
gonna take Don Staley to come and coach my basketball team,
all right, Chris, back to you.

Speaker 5 (34:40):
All right.

Speaker 6 (34:42):
I'm gonna go a little unorthodox here. I'm thinking about
what I can fill out in Detroit.

Speaker 4 (34:46):
Just make sure they're alive, because Ryan.

Speaker 5 (34:48):
He's pretty much he's alive. He has in his sport.

Speaker 6 (34:52):
He is third time all third time all time, third
place all time, excuse me, in wins out of any
other college coach in this sport. He is a legend.
His name means something tremendously to one city. I am
going and I want Jack Parker from Boston University, Boston University,

(35:14):
one of the greatest college hockey coaches of all time,
come on up to the Detroit Red Wings.

Speaker 5 (35:19):
All right, Wow, we took a big swing on that
and I like it. I like it.

Speaker 1 (35:23):
Chris, all right, Doug, you get the final one. This
one is going to It's off, definitely off everybody's radar,
but not off mine. I'm gonna do. Josh Holliday, he's
the head baseball coach at Oklahoma State. Batter his all
batter as well. I'm just I'm fascinated by the fact
that baseball hasn't ever reached into the that doesn't feel

(35:46):
like it's ever reached into the the college ranks, right,
it just doesn't. And you know you have to develop there,
you know, in terms of the game planning and everything
like I don't know. And now, look, Pat Murphy was
a great head coach at Arizona State. Like he's the
one guy, so you know. And now Murph, it's a

(36:11):
long time since he left it Arizona State, right, he
left Arizona State, I think in nine. But if Pat
Murphy could be successful, which he has been with the Brewers,
there's no reason Josh Holiday can't be successful in the
bigs as well.

Speaker 4 (36:24):
All Right, I like all of our selections. We went
really all over the place.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
I was into it. That's game time.

Speaker 5 (36:33):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
