Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlie Show. Heres in
the bonus with Doug Gottlie.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What showing the bones welcome in. So tonight could be
the last NBA game of the season, I would say
the last basketball game we care about. But the men's
Olympic team's gonna plays what I did the Sammy, That's
that's what I did. So here's the thing. You know,
(00:32):
you know, not all sweeps are the same, but I
do think this is a It's a big This is
a big one for the Mavericks because as much as
no one has ever come back from three games to
none down in the NBA playoffs, and I don't expect
this team to do it either, I do expect them
to win a game, and I expect Luka Doncik to
(00:56):
play incredibly well. The thing we've talked about things we
don't like about him, but he has that competitive greatness
and he has that ability ability to win a game
on his own. And no, I don't think they they
win more than two games, probably just a game. And
(01:16):
I don't snub was it thumb my nose. I don't
thumb my nose at teams that have gotten swept because
sometimes guys are hurt, teams are banged up whatever, and
Luca's clearly banged up. But you kind of got to
win tonight, right. Getting swept not great for the league.
Getting swept makes you look like you laid down. Getting
(01:37):
swept makes you look like you're a far inferior foe
to what you actually are. Again, I know people have
been swept and it's happened to everybody, but for me,
my expectation of the Dallas Mavericks are to win tonight.
They're a point and a half dog and not even
talking from the betting angle, but that's just Vegas saying
(01:58):
they expect them to lose tonight in the series to
be over when they didn't practice yesterday. You know, I
kind of tweeted that it's one, two three Cancun. But
a lot of that is just you got to rest
your body. You're all beaten up and it's all what
you got inside yet, And I do think that Luke
has a lot inside of him like the MAVs tonight,
and I I would lose some respect for them if
(02:20):
they got swept.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
It's Doug Got Leave show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's welcome in Jared Smith. These are Fox Sports Radio
betting analysts to co host the Fox Sports Radio Saturday
with Brian no and Rich Ornberger each Saturday, nine am
to noon noon Pacific time on Fox Sports Radio and
also available on the iHeartRadio app. Jared, Let's let's start
(02:53):
with tonight. Okay, tonight we have Game four NBA Finals.
All right, you can be a sweep, it can be
a gentleman's We don't know if Perzingis plays, but the
Dallas Mavericks at home, down three games to none, are
a point and a half underdog. The total is two
hundred to ten and a half. What's your lean?
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, it feels like this is the night that Dallas
gets won. I mean, I know I thought that in
Game three. I think I've underestimated Boston's tenacity through this
entire postseason. You know, I think coming into the postseason,
we didn't know if they were as good as the
twenty sixteen Warriors in terms of the dominance that they
showed in the regular season. We thought that there was
maybe a missing link in the in the finishing kick
(03:35):
for this team. But they've proven everyone wrong and you
know they're gonna win the They're gonna win this series.
It's just a matter of how many games. Nobody wants
to bet Dallas tonight. So you know, the contrarian in
me says, this is the game Dallas gets the NBA.
I don't think they want to sweep in the finals.
So I don't know if Dallas is gonna get all
the calls tonight, but I'm willing to bet Luca doesn't
(03:57):
fall out tonight, and you're going to see a very
solid effort I think from this Dallas team getting embarrassed.
You know, getting swept in the final is a very
embarrassing thing on your home floor. So I'm not saying
they're going to dominate this game, but I don't think
they're going to roll over and die. And you're getting
a little bit of a discount compared to what we
saw in Game three. And let's be honest, besides the
(04:19):
fact that they're down three to zero in the series,
the parameters of this game have not changed. It's the
same personnel. Porzingis probably isn't going to play. If he does,
he won't play much. And Dallas is as healthy as
they've been I guess in the entire series so far.
So I would say Dallas would be my pick tonight.
But after what we saw in Game three and just
how good and almost relishing the fact that people keep
(04:41):
underrating this Boston team, I would not be surprised if
they swept, but I would take the Mats to night.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Okay, you take the Masks. What about the total? I
mean lean on the total?
Speaker 3 (04:51):
I think so, I thought Over in Game two was
a solid bet. And you know, we haven't seen a
whole lot of explosive Dallas offensive ormances, and I think
that's why we've seen a lot of unders in this series.
If I've always said in the series that Dallas playing
well correlates to the over.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Dallas a better offensive team.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
So I think if you if you like Dallas or
not even think they win the game, I think the
game goes over.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Do you mind if we do some golf today, I'll
just please? Okay, Well, the US Open continues on right now,
and like, how would you bet the Open right now?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
So I think when you look at what we see
on a Friday, and betting golf pre flop before the
tournament starts is if you're just betting the outright markets,
it's probably the highest hold.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Markets you can bet into.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
And when I say hold, meaning what the sportsbooks make
per every dollar, it's a percentage. The average in an
NFL side is like three four five percent for the
sportsbooks on in any given week. In these PGA markets,
these golf markets where there's you know, in this particular event,
the US Open was like one hundred and fifty golf.
Only one of them can win, so it's really hard
(06:02):
to pick the winner, and it's even harder to get
a fair price.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
So what I tend to do in these golf.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Markets is I'll sprinkle a few long shots because that's
always fun. But now that we're at Friday, you know,
and we kind of know where the cut line is,
and we know who's going to be in, and there's.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Only you know, I think it's the top sixty and.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Ties for the USGA, you can kind of eliminate a
lot of people that are in the top twenty that
don't have what I call win equity, which is guys
that may be put together eighteen thirty six holes of
really good golf, but when the pressure gets ratcheted up
on the weekends, they tend to fold, and the odds
obviously reflect this as well. But right now, the favorite,
(06:42):
and despite the fact that you guys got Bryson, de Chhamba, McIlroy,
Patrick Cantley near the top of the leaderboard, the favorite
is a guy that's never won a major before, Ludvig
Aberg and you might remember him from the Masters of course,
just an incredible career this kid has had.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
He played in the Ryder Cup before he ever competed
in a major. That is very rare. And he has
kind of the temperament.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
He's a European golfer, kind of has that calm, even
keel temperament was fantastic at Augusta. Didn't perform as well
at the PGA Championship at Valhalla, but I think he
deserves to be the favorite. I would not be upset
with putting a small wager on him. The other guy
like this weekend is Bryson. I thought what he's done
in the last two majors, especially at Balhalla at the
PGA was.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Just you could tell that his game is back to where.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
It was, you know before kind of the crazy stuff
that went on in his career, and I was looking at.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Some stuff too.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
The last time that he does perform well at majors
in terms of back to back rounds in the sixties,
he tends to win or at least finish in the
top five. That's the last time he won the US
Open back to back rounds in the sixties on Friday
and Saturday. It's actually the last time he's had back
to back rounds in the sixties at a major. The
time for that was at Augusta when he almost won
that one too. So I think Bryson kind of has
(07:55):
his game back to form. I would say those would
be my two picks for the weekend. Aberg the Youngster
and Bryson, who at this point I would I would
call more of a grizzled bet.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Mmm, Jared, you're the best man? What what did I like?
I got, I got all that golf, and I got hoops?
Anything else? You are like your ponies? Anything else?
Speaker 3 (08:12):
That we had a rough row on the ponies over
the week, So I only bet three horse races of year,
Doug and I think, and this is a good and
I know a lot of your audience too is you know,
they're not the gambling audience. They tend to like to
bet on these big events, which most Americans do. We
have these big, huge events us Open Belmont, we like
to bet. I think the key is just knowing the
(08:33):
people that are really good at handicapping this stuff and
just kind of gravitating towards that. When we get back
to football, it's it's more me and my work. But
a lot of this stuff with the golf, with the ponies,
you know, even college World Series. You want to talk
about a fun market that's really undervalued. Serious games are nutsos.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
They are nutsos. They are nutsos, and and fun. Yeah,
it's like fun to be anything everything but everything that
you miss about Major League based one. And look, major
baseball is a lot better watch than it used to
be with the with the elimination of the shift, and
with the with the pitch, with the pitch clock. But
college baseball just the energy is incredible.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
And and the markets are again the golf markets are
a little bit more bet into because it's a very
popular sport, especially offshore, is a really popular The golf
market's very popular, especially the matchups that's where the pros
tend to bet the most is the matchups in golf,
but in the college World Series and another market that's
very undervalue that I've been trying to pay more attention to.
(09:33):
It's just hard because you know, time only so much
time in the day. Right, I'm sure you can appreciate that.
Is the w NBA again becoming more popular now obviously,
but from a betting perspective, doesn't get a lot of
that sharp handle. Big reason is the limits are relatively low,
so the real big big fish don't feel like they,
you know, have much to gain by really swimming in
(09:55):
these markets. But for the average joe like you and
me who bets hundred, you know, bucks a game like,
no big deal, and you're getting a fair number. Whereas
in the NFL on a Sunday, if you wake up
on Sunday morning and bet an NFL line, you're not
getting a fair number. Like that market's been beat to
hell the whole week and you're just kind of getting
what's left.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
So I think looking at some of.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
These more obscure sports like the Ponies, like the golf,
like the WNBA, like the college baseball, like yeah, it's
fun and it's entertaining their entertainment values high, but you're
also getting a better bang for your buck a lot
of times if you're putting money at the table.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
That's awesome stuff. He's Jared Smith. Of course, you can
hear him on Fox Sports Radio Saturday mornings, nine am
to noon Pacific. Coach Time. You're the best man. Thanks
for joining us.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Good luck this weekend.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Let's find out who or what is annoying Jason Stewart.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
And now it's your annoying.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Who what is annoying you? Today?
Speaker 5 (11:03):
I'm gonna start with what's annoying you? We had a
pre production meeting and I told you about these comments
by Cam Newton. This is what he's said on this
podcast about UH minorities being in high profile broadcast positions.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
I'm always gonna tell Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Greg Olsen,
Troy Aikman, Matt.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Ryan to go get the bad.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
What I am doing is.
Speaker 6 (11:28):
Saying, how in the world are they're the only ones
that's getting.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Access to these type of contracts Because somebody told me.
Speaker 6 (11:35):
They say, well, you don't get these contracts because you're
not polished yet. Who's this type of media training that
Tony Romo had before? He just popped up commentating the game,
and he does a damn good job. He does Tom
Brady same thing like he didn't. I ain't never seen
Tom Brady cover.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
No, they could be doing some stuff behind the shadows.
It's not understood though, but.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
They skipped the line of a lot of people.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
That is my point.
Speaker 6 (11:59):
How can we get other minorities to skip the line too,
because we all know ball.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Uh again, we're doing the thing again, right, We're doing
the like Tom Brady skipping the line. Tom Brady is
the greatest quarterback to ever play this sport, just like
Jerry Rice is the greatest wide receiver, just like some
people think Emmitt Smith. Guess what Emmitt Smith skipped all
(12:28):
the lines? Was that ESPN was terrible. Jerry Rice was
at ESPN was terrible. I guess the question is who
is the outside of Cam Newton. Outside of Cam Newton,
who is the former quarterback who desperately wants or who
would like to be a broadcaster who has not gotten
(12:50):
the opportunity to be a broadcaster. I'd love to know
that additionally, Right, like, if it's a if it's a
TV is racist thing? Right? Have you turned on the NBA? Yes,
JJ Reddick has been elevated to cover the NBA finals. Uh,
(13:11):
but I believe TNT. I don't think they have a
white analyst, do they? I don't believe so. ESPN does
not have a white analyst on their on their on
their dais either. So it's like, look, Matt Ryan got
(13:32):
an opportunity. Matt Ryan's a former MVP of the NBA,
of the NFL. Cam Newton is a guy who again,
is there is there some sort of what's the word
I'm looking for? Is there any push to have him
on TV? I think he's good in his podcast, he's good,
but like Cam Newton's one of those guys that you
don't know what he's going to say. He's very, very
(13:54):
opinionated and kind of sometimes in a sort of bizarre fashion. Now,
could he be a broadcaster? I think absolutely. He won
a Heisman Trophy, won a national championship, and was the
MVP of the of the of the NFL. But I
think that because of his podcast, people are afraid to
(14:14):
take a chance on him because they don't know what
he's going to say next. And that's Look, I've battled
against this during my career, which is I think that's
a strength. Barkley can get away with it. Most people cannot.
But it just annoys me because he's leaving out a
whole heck of a lot. And maybe it's because he
(14:34):
doesn't know or whatever, He's just leaving out a lot,
a whole lot of guys who have gotten opportunities. The
Romo thing, like, look, Romo played for the Cowboys. Pretty
much anybody who's been good for the Cowboys, including Michael Irvin,
who I think, Mike Gorven did you get fired by
the NFL network? Like Mike Gorvan's gotten fifteen different lives
as a broadcaster, not because he's lacked, because he played
(14:56):
for the Cowboys and because he was an all time
great and he's got a good personality. So you know,
what he's doing is he's cherry picking a couple of
guys in order to help him with his argument, and
it's not not a great argument.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
What else Giselle bunching mates this segment today. I don't
know if you saw this, but reportedly her and her
boyfriend Joaquim Valente, some jiu jitsu trainer that she started
dating after the divorce with Tom Brady. I guess they've
broken up or they haven't been seen together. And according
(15:29):
to In Touch Weekly, which I love being able to
quote in Touch Weekly, the spotlight was too much in
the wake of the Tom Brady roast. According to a source,
Joaquem's a regular guy. He's not used to all the
attention he was getting. Now. If you remember, Giselle was
(15:50):
put off, reportedly by some of the humor used to
talk about their divorce, their family. She was put off,
and I guess by extension the stress of the roast
dog has led to her breakup with Joaquin Valente. I'm
annoyed by Giselle because I just have a feeling this
is one of these cases, and all of us have
(16:14):
known this woman grown up. It's the woman that has
never been told no, She's never been rejected once. And
I just have a feeling that old joaqum here got
sick of her shit and said, I'm good. We don't
need to see each other anymore. And now Gizelle is
blaming the roast of her ex husband because it can't
(16:35):
be her. It can't be her. Bullshit.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Yeah, here's the thing with Giselle. Okay, she sails a
colossal pain in the ass, colossal pain this. I don't
know what happened with the jiu jitsu guy. Were they
actually a couple? Is that? Do we do we know that?
Or was that?
Speaker 5 (16:56):
Yeah? I think that's pretty confirmed.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Yeah, no, it's pretty confirmed, is it it is?
Speaker 5 (17:00):
I mean it's in Touch Weekly, so as confirmed as
we can get.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Oh my goodness, the all time Jase Do quote. It's
in Touch weekly. So yeah, that's that's that. That, that's
what it is. Oh man, that's so funny. Yeah, I
I she's a pain in the ass. I honestly think.
Remember she was the one who said he's had a
my husband cannot tell the bottle cats in myself. And
(17:28):
she told the world that her husband had all these concussions,
obviously because she didn't want him to keep playing football.
I don't want to. I don't know. None of us
know what really went into the breakdown of their marriage.
I don't. I think that's private and personal and I
don't really want to get into that, you know. But
I do think that she shown herself to be a
pain in the ass, and this is what happens with
(17:48):
a this is what happens with a celebrity, and when
a celebrity goes through a breakup and she's a celebrity.
I think that what you got to though, is a
really good part. And I don't know if it's because
she's a supermodel or because she's a woman, but one
of the things that women struggle with is the fact that,
like God, we're criticized all the time, women are not.
(18:10):
And I truly believe this that because they're not criticized
all the time, when they are, it feels extra harsh
to them. Does that make sense?
Speaker 5 (18:19):
Of course we're seeing it play out in the WNBA.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Yeah, that's exactly what it is. And so that's why
you get the That's why you get the whole woe
is me? You guys are unfair. It's sexist sort of thing.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
Who else, So we'll touch on this. We got into
it heavy on the radio show, but I did want
to give kind of my angle on this. So Kayln
Clark had a Thursday yesterday, Kayln Clark and her win
her team's win last night over some team I don't
know about. That's the least of her. Thursday. Remember yesterday,
(19:01):
in this segment, we talked about Jim Trotter asking Caitlin
Clark what she thinks about her name being used in
this culture war, and she she kind of I don't
know if it's the high road or she took the
road of I have I don't see that. I'm not
on social media and I'm here to play basketball. Okay,
you and I really liked that answer. That's a great answer.
(19:24):
Don't get involved. There's only wrong things happen when you
get involved. Well, after Jim Trotter asked her that, and
after we did our segment on the show, there was
a tweet and Iowa, Sam could help me out with
this one. There is a guard on the Sun. Her
name is de john Ay de John A Carrington, Djon
(19:47):
A Carrington? Did you djon A Carrington. She's the one,
by the way the other day that mocked Caitlin when
she did that hedge fake thing and then got the
foul called and an she's a really good player, by
the way. She just ate up on Caitlin and just
shut her down like three times. Loves pestering. Kaitlyn got
that long blonde hair so.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
She quote natural blonde, I don't think.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
So, I dot it, and almost nothing about her presentation
I think is natural. But but I will say this.
She went on social media and posted this dog how
one cannot be bothered by their name being used to
justify racism, bigotry, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia and intersectionalities of them
(20:31):
all is nuts. We all see the shit. We all
have a platform, we all have a voice, and they
all hold weight. Silence is a luxury, So here we go.
Caitlin Clark is now racist for not addressing her name
being in the cultural war. So then a reporter caught
(20:51):
up tour before the game, which I think is curious
that they made her available before the game. This seems orchestrated.
It seems like the reporter was told, could you please
go and re ask her the question that Jim Trotter
asked her earlier today, And this is how it went. Jilen,
I you mentioned that you know you want to pocus
right on basketball.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Definitely respect that when just.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Asking rich people know you don't respect use your.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
Name racist usagem or whatever. What is the risks to best?
Speaker 7 (21:20):
Yeah, I think it's disappointing. I think, you know, everybody
in our world, you know, deserves them the same amount
of respect. The women in our league deserve the same
amount of respect. So people should not be using my names.
There's those agendas. Is disappointing, you know, it's not acceptable,
But yeah, I mean this league is the league I
grew up admiring and wanting to be a part of.
(21:41):
Like some of the women in this league were my
biggest idols and role models growing up and helped me
wanted to achieve this moment right here that I get
to plan every single night. So it's treating everything woman
league with the same amount of respect.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
I think it's just a basic.
Speaker 7 (21:56):
Human thing that everybody should do, like, you know, just
be a kind person and tree them you know how
you would want to be treated. And I think it's
been a very similar all right.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
If you miss that, it's uh now Caitlin Clark has
now weighed in on it. Uh. Using my name for
bigotry and misogyny is wrong.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
Who was used as her name for bigotry and massogynye?
Speaker 5 (22:16):
I need the examples.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
There's none of them. There's none of them. But there's
not a you know what I'm gonna do here, I'm
gonna I'm gonna do what I should have done a
long time ago. Jim Trotter, this is shitty what you've done,
which you've become. It's really shitty. And I'm sorry you
lost your job with the NFL network. I really am.
I don't want anybody. And you're a talented writer. Here's
the reality. You held onto your job several years too
(22:40):
long because nobody reads print print anymore. They just don't.
And so they found a different home for you and
they put you on TV. Jim Trotter was always a
good dude, but you you are a reputable person who
you flipped over to be one of these guys that
just wants to make everything out to be racist. It's
fucking shitty and everybody's tired of it. And I don't
even know who this person is. But the I was
(23:02):
a man or a woman whoever. The reporter is who
asked you said, you said you want to stick to
just basket want to respect that. No you don't, No,
you don't. She said she wanted to just stick to
basketball period. Stop. And by the way, the WNBA, you
fucking suck too, Okay, you suck because you should there
should be a pr person going that. No, no, no, She
(23:24):
answered the question previously, she said she just wanted to
keep it to basketball. That's your answer. No more time,
and this is what you've done, and now you make
people hate the WNBA. I don't like the WNBA. I'll
just tell you. And by the way, nobody watched the
(23:45):
WNBA previously because we don't like watching women's basketball. We
like and like. I like the NCAA tournament. I do.
I've never liked watching the WNBA. I just it's not
my flavor. It's not my taste. I also, I don't
watch hockey. Did we fail to mention that part? I
don't watch hockey. I don't know a single name of
(24:06):
a single uh no, no, wa wait, Connor McDavid. Sorry,
I know that name. Other than that, I know one
name of one hockey player on Earth who's playing in
the NHL right now. That's it. What does that make me?
I don't know. I don't know who's good at NASCAR anymore.
Don't know that either, don't watch that. Don't give a shit. Hey,
(24:30):
you're making something out to be something it's not and
you continue to do it, and I can't stand it. Anymore.
And the worst part about it is the Hey, if
you don't say something about this, if you don't say
something about these imaginary people that are using your name
in misogyny and racism, then you're a racist. Like, no,
(24:50):
you're not. Don't make Caitlin Clark out to be a
fucking racist, and don't do it to me either. I'm
just done with it. I'm done with all of it.
If you're a reporter and this starts with Jim Try,
you are no longer friend of anybody I know, because
everybody who talks to you knows, Like, dude, any sort
of comment you're worrying about being called some sort of
racist when you're not. It's stupid, it's dumb. Stop chasing
(25:13):
the boogeyman that doesn't exist. Hey, sorry, she's popular. Sorry,
people like her more. Everyone who's in business, everyone who's
in the business of women's basketball, who wants to grow
