the way tire buying should be welcome. In congratulations to
the Boston Celtics. They are champions of the NBA. And
I find it clever or curious. Maybe what's happened to

(00:49):
broadcasting has happened to broadcasting because I saw it halftime
yesterday Steven A. Smith go off on the Dallas Mavericks
because it was ridiculous that the star for the Dallas
Mavericks can't come to play. That's, by the way, not analysis.
That's hot takey, which you're allowed to have. That take okay,
because the game was felt like it was relatively over

(01:13):
at the half. But I don't think that's analysis. Actually,
I know that's not analysis. On the other hand, maybe
a smarter take would be, hey, you know, when they
have all their players, the Celtics are the better team.
And so oftentimes we like to go and pick apart
champions and say, well, this team was injured and that

(01:34):
team was injured, and then this happened and that happened,
which is a reality. I'm not dismissing it. I do it,
everybody does it. It's it's but when they had christophs persingis,
they were better than everybody else, especially better than Dallas Mavericks.
And the Mavericks were the classic case of because of
well Oklahoma City not being ready for that level of competition,

(01:56):
or a good matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are
also hadn't been at that level of competition. Can we
just keep it one hundred, as the kids say, and
point out that the Celtics were the best team in
the NBA and the regular season, and they were the
best team in the NBA in the postseason, and that's
why they're the rightful NBA champions It's refreshing to have
a worthy championship team because the best team in the

(02:20):
West when healthy it was probably the Clippers, but one
the Clippers, and two they weren't healthy. So it's kind
of a moot point. But the reality to all of it,
reality to all of it is, here is a Celtic
team that has been dominant throughout the season and we
shouldn't be surprised that they were dominant the postseason. And yeah,

(02:43):
you can go into talking about how they struggled with
Cleveland until Donovan Mitchell was hurt fair they also didn't
have Christos Presingis. When they had Prazingis, it wasn't particularly close.
And the other thing we do a we do a
disservice to. We do disservice to to the rest of

(03:03):
the Celtics, like check out their roster. It's incredible, right
their roster. These pieces fit together so well. And we
talked about this a little bit earlier, maybe in this week,
I guess it was, or maybe it was last week.
Where the perfect example is Drew Holiday, who had fifteen

(03:23):
eleven rebounds and four assists. If Drew Holidays your third
or fourth best player, you have a great team. You
could make an argument that he's their fifth or sixth
best player. If he's your first or second best player,
you don't, so Yeah, Jason Tatum finally sort of went
off last night, although he didn't shoot the ball well.
With exception of one game in this series, Jalen Brown

(03:45):
had twenty one but took twenty three shots to do so.
And as we searched for an MVP, and you could
make the case that there should have been a dual MVP,
the point is that the reason that you could search
for it is it was really an ensemble cast doing it. True,
you have two bona fide scores, but you have a
damn good roster. And you combined Derek White and Drew Holiday,

(04:10):
add in Christos Frazingis and Peyton Pritchard and Sam Hauser
to go along with Al Horford, who's ancient but made
two threes last night, and you can see that their
overall roster isn't just very very good, it's well put together.
You have two stretch fives in Horford and Perzingis. That

(04:33):
opens up the lane for two dynamic downhill driving wings
in Tatum and Brown. All that works together and a
coach who thoroughly embraces the three point shot. They shot
thirty nine of them last night. And lastly, that's what
happens when you have an upset. You know, we say

(04:54):
this all the time when it comes to upsets in
the NCAA tournament. Everybody wants the upset. But then when
you have upsets, sometimes you have a disparity in the
next rounds matchup. You have teams that aren't that good.
That's what you have here with the Dallas Mavericks. I mean,

(05:15):
it's really easy to be critical of Luca, who does
end up with twenty eight, twelve and five, but you
simply got to point out what's he playing with. You know,
Steve and a can sit up there and rant all
he wants about. Hey, you know, Luca and Kyrie have
to be better. Kyrie's not as good as he used
to be and continues to struggle against the Celtics. Luca

(05:36):
is appears to be a little heavy, a little hurt
and oh yeah, by the way, are you scared of
Derek Jones? Are you scared of Daniel Caffert? Are you
scared of PJ. Washington? I think the answer is no,
he doesn't have the team, and how can I tell
he doesn't have the team. Go look at where they
were during the season. Fifty and thirty two is a

(05:59):
very very good record, but it is not one of
the top four records in the NBA. And we have
the best record in the NBA against the fifth best
record in the West. Sitting here and tell you that
the Boston Celtics, who were relatively dominant, especially when they
had christophs presingis this shouldn't be a surprise. And the
true story is they're a rightful champion. They're the best team,

(06:24):
and they played like the best team for the most
part in the finals. Here's Joe Mizoula, their head coach,
talk about his two superstars.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
I think the most important thing is something that's really
been really going through my mind throughout this process, is
you can't lose sight of the people that came before us.
And I want to make sure every person that's worked
for the Celtics, that's played for the Celtics that didn't win,
knows that their work and what they've done hasn't gone
un noticed or doesn't play apartment. Where we're at today

(06:50):
can be praise and criticism are both just as dangerous
if you don't handle them well. And I think we
talked about that as a team this year, like winning
is just as dangerous as losing if you don't handle
it well. Like you need that, you need criticism, you
need praise, you need expectations to all those things go
into making who you are as a person, making who
you are as people as an organization.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Here's Jason Tatum talk about his critics after the game.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
It's a real feeling. I still hasn't really kicked in yet.
Just try and I guess enjoyed the moment. I kept saying, Wow,
these last seven years have been a roller coaster up
and down. I had to listen to it about me
and tonight it was worth it.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Oh my god, Well I love that. I mean, I'm
not sure there was that much blank talked about you,
but it is definitely worth it when he ultimately win
a title. Here's Jalen Brown and his teammate Jason Tatum.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Yeah, we just take it one game at a time.
You know, we started this journey together.

Speaker 5 (07:45):
We were both.

Speaker 4 (07:45):
Drafted here and we both you know, have made Boston
our home.

Speaker 6 (07:50):
Man.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
We just love getting after it, loved growing, love getting
better tasting greatness. So I can't say enough about Jason Tatum. Man.
It sacrificed this year, his ability to just be selfless,
you know, really really showed in the finals, really showed
all playoffs, and I'm grateful, man, But I couldn't do
it without any of my teammates and JT how's my
brother for life?

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah? I mean like, look, I mean obviously, had they
rematched with the Nuggets, last year's champion, you would have
felt like that's a better series because it's a different
and unique matchup. But their bench was different and they
couldn't get past the Wolves. The Wolves end up losing
to the Mavericks. The Mavericks aren't an elite team, even
though they have a couple of elite players and a

(08:31):
team with very good starters in an outstanding ensemble cast.
Is the best team in the regular season, is the
best team in the postseason. It shouldn't be a surprise.
Was it a great watch? No? No, do I think
Dallas fought. I do I think they They're just a
disparity in talent and the Celtics are exceptionally well coached.
It's not that Dallas is poorly coached, but you know

(08:53):
what different How differently can they attack considering how much
their entire season is dependent upon Luca and how he plays.

Speaker 6 (09:00):
This is the best of the Done Dot Leap Show
on Fox Sports Radio, Doug Gottlieb Show.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Fox Sports Radio. So we talked a little bit about
Rory yesterday. Obviously the collapse at the US Open, then
the fact that he bailed right right after the US Open,
and I, look, I thought, I didn't think it was

(09:30):
a strong. Look, I just didn't. But then I saw
his post today and all right, so you guys help
me out on social media posts. He didn't post it
on his Instagram page. He posted on his story, which
means it disappears in twenty four hours. So twenty two
hours ago he posted yesterday, it was a tough day,

(09:50):
probably the toughest I've had in nearly seventeen years as
a professional golfer. First, I like to congratulate Bryson. He's
a worthy champion, exactly what professional golf needs right now.
I think we can all agree on that. As I
reflect on my week, I'll rue a few things over
the course of the tournament, mostly the two missbutts on
sixteen and eighteen. On the final day. But as I

(10:13):
always try and do, I look at the positives of
the week that far outway the negatives, and as I
said start the tournament, I feel closer to winning my
next major than I ever have before. The one word
I can I would use to describe my career is resilient.
I've shown my resilience over and over again in the
last seventeen years, and I will again. I'm going to
take a few weeks away from the game and process

(10:35):
everything and build myself back for my defense of the
Genesis Scottish Open and the Open at World True see
you in Scotland. What's missing? Like? Man, that sounded really good?
Oh yeah, my bad? On bailing on the postseason pleasantries
in the postseason press conference, the post round pleasantries in
the post round press conference, Like is it that hard

(10:59):
to say? Yeah, I was just I was. I was
a B word, right, I bailed early instead of answering
the tough questions. Or does simply trying to put a
positive note on it get you past that? Byer, what
do you think does this post get him past the
fact that he just bailed, didn't want to talk to anybody,

(11:19):
And as you point out, yesterday. The gravel did him
no good because you know, it feels more like Duke's Hazzard.
You're pulling out in the gravel when you're pressing.

Speaker 7 (11:28):
No apology to those rocks at all, by any means
are the people that may have gotten some of the
shrapnel from his burnout from the from the parking lot.
I do think that it is an enormous miss and
this does not make up for it. It's one of
the great things about Tiger Woods now, so we always
feel that Tiger always won. But the responsibility that Tiger
had to talk after every single round, even if things

(11:51):
didn't go well, was was something that very very few
and really no others have had to deal with. Well,
we're now in a different and I know Brooks Koepka
blew off the media on Thursday and didn't want to
didn't want to talk after his round, felt that the
media asked boring questions. I get all that, but this

(12:12):
is different. This is Phil Mickelson. You know, faced the
music when he blew his best chance at winning a
US Open at wing Foot in two thousand and six,
and from it came, you know, one of the great
quotes that we've had in Golf of Mickelson just admitting
that he said, I'm an idiot. You know that I
completely messed that up. But it also endeared Phil mickleson

(12:34):
Phil Micholson to so many as if he wasn't already
at that point. And this is just a bad look
from Rory. And and I'll also say this, Doug, I
feel like there's this, this this sense of shifting in
the in the tides, where Rory was thought of as
the hero for so long, and all of the Live
guys were bad guys, and now we see how Bryson

(12:55):
has looked at and it's different even before Live when
he was probably just like the most and he's now
a really, really well liked character. And I think some
people got a little tired of Rory, and I think
Rory even realized that. But now doing this doesn't help
his cause, like you would think, I think it's a
total miss him not playing that.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
Is it that hard to say my bad? Like, is
it that hard to say, hey, my bad? You know,
I was really really upset at myself, really upset at
how it finished. And instead of losing my cool, you know,
to the media. Sure, we don't even have to say
that you just go hey, like a simple apology is

(13:35):
usually accepted. I think everybody understands what was at stake,
no one more so than me. I felt terrible about it,
and I reacted poorly. Okay.

Speaker 7 (13:44):
There's also a little different I think like feel with golf,
which is actually a benefit to Rory. Where Like, if
you're in the NFL, there are sixteen games going on
on any weekend, maybe not all the insiders are at
your game, So Patrick Mahomes isn't seeing all of the
national reporters. Golf is the only show in like this
is the only show in town. The reporters that you

(14:06):
see here, there are very few people who are not
following the tour, not following the US Open. These are
also familiar faces that are asking you these questions. It's
not like you're going to get bombarded with something out
of the ordinary or some Johnny Come Lately who just
shows up and is gonna, you know, ask you a
random There are there, but it's it's a much more

(14:27):
insulated and people know people in that press conference setting.
So I'm not to say that it's it was a
safe place, but I don't think that Rory was going
to get blindsided by anything. It's just the fact that
he didn't want to face the music after missing two
awful pots that he did mention in the in the statement.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yeah, I agree. And look the other thing I think
he has going for him. I mean, in all honesty
is if you sit down to post, like we all
think we could play football at the level of NFL
players or basketball, but we like, you know, ninety nine
point nine percent of people, but golf fans especially play golf.
They understand, like, man, those last putts. I mean, it's

(15:07):
unbelievable the steadiness that these guys have. And so it's
not really facing the music as much as like, I
get it, it's golf. We choked. It happens. You know,
I'm out of if I'm making sense in my statement.
The point is that golf is such a humiliating sport
to so many, even really good golfers, that there's a

(15:30):
certain okay, I get it, you know it was. Yeah,
whereas when you act like you're a spoiled brats, that's
what translates. When you act like you were pouting, now
all of a sudden, you become a country clip kid. Sure,
and we have a lot less sympathy for you.

Speaker 7 (15:46):
I'll tell you another guy that had scar tissue for
so long was Dustin Johnson. You know the twenty ten
PGA that he lost that Whistling Straits when he grounded
the club, met the media afterwards. Then five years later
at the US Open, has a putt to win the
US Open, misses that and then misses the comebacker and
loses it to Jordan Speith. And then guess who he

(16:06):
did afterwards, met with reporters, spoke, and he won the
next year, right, Yes, Yeah, came back and you know
I was able to reap only one.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
The only one that looked bad after missing that one
was Greg Norman, who was Remember he was on Foxes
and they didn't ask him about it, and he didn't
want to share what it's like to gag away a
major like that.

Speaker 7 (16:25):
Yes, it was his only uh. I think US opened
he did with Fox.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Correct He it's Doug Gollip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Doug
gotlip shot here on Fox Sports Radio. I swear to you, Sam,
that song was rolling in my head last night. Good,
it was great. You guys coming out. What's what's the
story when when we When are you guys doing a
show road trip. I want to get to work on that.

(16:54):
We need to do Packers training camp this year as
well as UH. I guess we'll do Chargers. We could
do Raiders, and we love to do the Cowboys and
the Rams. Ryan Hollins joins us. Of course, Ryan's host
on Fox Sports RADO on weekends. He played ten years
in the NBA. He's the color analyst for the Houston
Rockets television network and he's an NBA analysts And Ryan,

(17:18):
that one just felt like a mismatch from the first game.
Why was there such a disparity between the Champion of
the West that's generally seen as the better conference in
the Champion of the East.

Speaker 8 (17:32):
I think everyone told us that in today's Arab basketball,
you didn't have the ability to defend. And the Celtics,
you know, everybody jumped a down sand. The Timberwolves are
one of the best defensive you've ever seen. That Celtics
team are both ends. That was impressive. And Doug, we

(17:54):
spoke about how prolific that the Mavericks were, they could
play in different speeds, how great Luca and Kyrie were,
and make no mistake, they're still great. They're still great.
Those guys are really good. But the fact that Boston
was able to defend them. I mean, Kyrie literally threw

(18:17):
the kitchen sink at Drew Holiday and he couldn't shake
them off. He couldn't get away from Drew Holiday to
save his life. I'm thinking about the Celtics defense, and
I think the surprise was because the road was so easy, Doug.
I mean, I mean it was gross how easy and

(18:38):
how many breaks that Boston gotten. Maybe you can say
they weren't battle tested. Maybe you consider legs were fresh.
Maybe you can say Brent Stevens di the heck of
a job making sure they had depth and they played
ten eleven deep through the year and Jason Tatum had
to sacrifice his numbers and didn't have to, you know,

(18:59):
go aftering you know, some type of champion or chasing
Lebron James or whatever it may be. They just they
just had strength in numbers. But they really just wore
out Dallas. And you're right, from the physical aspect, their
depth really sincerely showed. And they've got a mix up

(19:20):
youth an age, which is what a lot of teams
kind of shy away from doing. And it was something
special to watch.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Okay, let's let's do a little post wartum on the Mavericks. Obviously,
Lucas defense wasn't particularly good, but he was also the
kind of their lone offensive weapon. If you're reforming these
Mavericks and trying to make them another run towards the finals,
what do you do?

Speaker 8 (19:47):
And I think we saw the recipe from Boston in
also Oklahoma City that your strength has to be in numbers.
So I'm going and getting some more PJ. Washington's and
and you know, I'm trying to find anything that resembles
Derek White on the Boston side, and I'm getting I'm

(20:09):
getting the depths to go in there and match, and
I think if they can defend, if they can match
these small lineups, and it was almost like, you know,
Tim Hardaway Jr. Becomes unplayable. You know, he didn't have
the size to defend, and then you're just hoping he's
hitting the three. And if he's not hitting the shot,
he's probably more of a liability than Luca because he's

(20:31):
six to eight. But I'm I'm I'm doing everything, and
I think Hardaway Junior is in the heck of a player.
But I'm trying to get as tall and long and
as big as I can moving forward, and that's the
only way you kind of match Boston because they got
some firepower. Dude, they they are our stacks. And I

(20:54):
think you have something going good there. You know, PJ.
Washington is a keeper. Uh, Derek Jones Junior played career basketball.
I think he kind of hit some gears and really,
you know, kind of capitalized off his athleticism and you
know the gifts that he has. So I think you
just build upon what's there.

Speaker 1 (21:13):
Man stet Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Ryan
Hollins is our guest. Of course, you can you listen
to Ryan Holmes on weekends here in Fox Sports Radio,
or you may watch him when he's calling the Houston
Rockets games. All right, what about the Celtics? You know,
everybody fears the disease of me? What what? What's the
biggest things that can hamper them for becoming a bit

(21:36):
of a dynasty with their two young stars being just
that young and stars?

Speaker 8 (21:41):
Well, how does Drew Holliday, you know, Drew maybe you know,
on the decline after this, I don't know how much
longer you're going to have Al Horford so you're going
to kind of have to scour for Zingis injury. So
you know, you got to fill that middle ind you know,
and this this may end up being one of the
better bat Austin team that they've been able to have.

(22:02):
You know, hey, Drew and this time had his share
of injury. So I think you just really you fight
the injury bug. And I think there's a lot of
fine tuning. Doug correct me if I'm wrong. I don't
feel like their offense was lack luster. I think they
bumped into each other a lot. There are moments where
they just couldn't score the basketball. You know, we've always

(22:23):
spoken about them getting too reliant on the three. The
cohesion is still not there. So I think you try
to keep what you have in tact or you find
the replaceables that you know, the next up in that
line in terms of Holiday and possibly out Horford. But
I think, you know, you got to find a way

(22:44):
or a guy that kind of makes it work, you know,
when Ricky Rubio went to the Cavaliers to kind of
helped make those things work. When Darius Garland is good,
he gets they're too big with the Cavs going you know,
Rondo was that guy who saw Chris Paul in Oklahoma City.
You know, so maybe they find one of those gems
like a Tias Jones or somebody like that that kind

(23:08):
of makes that offense have a little bit more cohesion.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
Ryan Halan's our guest here on the Doug Gotlib Show
on Fox Sports Radio. If it's not the Mavericks next year,
and again there's going to be some player movement, who
are you most convinced come out of the West next season.

Speaker 8 (23:26):
I don't turn out the Nuggets. I think they understanding
free agency. They've got to really go out and address
that bench. I think, yo, kid to the stud I
think they can grind with you. They're tough, they have
the experience, and I think that you know, they're seeing
the pieces that they need to go out and add.
But I think as far as Jamal Murray being healthy

(23:49):
and Jokic, I don't think you take anything away from it.
Mike Malone's right, man, they were beat up, So I
think with them it's a matter of health and turn
up that bench. You have. You have poor pieces that
you can very much still work with, and I think
that's the big piece when you're trying to construct a
championship squad.

Speaker 1 (24:10):
Ryan hawns our guest here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio. JJ Reddick rumors are now starting
to get out there going to be the head coach
of the Lakers. What do you think of the fit?

Speaker 8 (24:23):
You know, we talked about this duck first and foremost.
When you're coaching the Lakers, you got to have fixed
in and you have to be able to deal with
the media, and JJ Reddick, with his media training and
you know, expertise, I think he should be just fine
with that. I think that's the biggest piece at this point.

(24:46):
Lebron James is still a heck of a player and
he means a lot to the organization. So he's going
to have to be a piece, and it looks like
JJ Reddick is that piece that is gonna pease of
Lebron James. So I think that's what you have to
go with at this point. And obviously you can afford
the swinging minster that. You know, It's kind of like

(25:06):
when you publicly put an offer out to the coach,
he comes around and he doesn't, you know, take an offer.
It's just flapping the face of the organization, so you know,
you don't want to play around with one more coach
that may turn it around. You know, it does. It's
rare that the Lakers really put offers out like they have.
And then at the same time, you know, adding on

(25:30):
the year. So I think they're going to go the
safe beck and then I think JJ would be more
than willing to take the job.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
I do too. I don't know if it's a safe bet,
but yes, you're talking about safe in terms of knowing
he's going to safe.

Speaker 8 (25:42):
In terms of him taking it, because again, for the Lakers,
you don't want to be in a negotiation. Time is
ticking and then you look up and you still don't
have a coach. That's the you know, that's the issue
that the Lakers are running up against. And again it's
it's embarrassing when someone turns down such a coveted job.

Speaker 1 (26:00):
It does, but it does happen, you know, and you know,
we act like it's the Lakers are the only team
to be turned down to try and hire a coach
that that couldn't be couldn't be further from the truth.
I just, in my opinion, Paul George kind of threatening
to walk out on the Clippers or force assigning trade
and Clay Thompson, you know, kind of tinkering with the

(26:23):
idea of playing in Orlando. Who's most likely to play
somewhere else next year?

Speaker 8 (26:31):
Godly damn, Doug, that's a good one, man. I'd want
to say Clay, because I really can't believe that the
Clippers would move on from Paul George. I think with
his health, he's by far their best player right now
and the real peace unless you know, we talked about it, Doug,

(26:52):
you're gonna move him. You got to get a bunch
of pieces back. I don't think Clay wants to lead
to Bay. I think Clay is pissed off. I think
he's frustrated. I think he's going through a lot of stuff,
and I think they're going to reach out to him
and find a deal that makes sense at the end
of the day. So I think Clay stays. But Paul

(27:13):
George I think maybe science I don't know. I think
obviously it's more. Really, I think for Clay it's just
about the money, and Orlando would be willing to pay him.
But I don't I don't think it's about the money
with Clay. You can make that up off the court.
So I'm intrigued to see man. But it's a different
territory that those guys are in. And again, I can't

(27:36):
see Paul George wanted to leave in LA you know.

Speaker 1 (27:40):
Again, you know, yeah, I can't either. But I wonder
where he goes. I'm just I'm fascinated to see where he.

Speaker 8 (27:46):
Goes when you see so many people publicly jumping out
and saying we'll take him, and I think if you're
a front office, you're diligence. All twenty nine other teams
are asking about Paul George and that I think the
organization goes, yeah, we might not mess this up. But again, Doug,
he is the piece that you can get a first rounder.

(28:08):
If Rudy Gobert went for what four first rounds, you
could get a king's ransom for Paul George.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
You know, one would think one would think Ryan.

Speaker 8 (28:17):
Maybe Oklahoma City might step up.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Yeah, they they might. I don't know. I mean, they
have the draft picks for it too, on a side
in trade, and they got they got the space. The
question with them is does does adding a piece And
they probably need to add a piece to win now,
but is that trying to cheat a step and does
that actually set them back as there? You know that
you got such a tight group there.

Speaker 8 (28:38):
You know, Paul George was wow And I spoke to
him when he had his time in Oklahoma City. As
soon as he signed, they came out to see him.
They welcomed him their first class organization. So it wasn't
like he was just clamoring to get out of there.
Now there's no place like home, But I don't think
he loved the way that he was treated there and

(28:59):
they respect and when he wanted to be moved, they
moved him. And for a player that speaks volumes, I
don't rule it out. It's becoming a place where you're
looking in chan I can go win the championship, So
I don't roll out play with Oklahoma City and Paul George.
There's nothing but good Viob still.

Speaker 1 (29:15):
There, all right. Ryan Hollands, of course hear him on weekends.
He's an NBA analyst. Matter of fact, he covers the
Houston Rockets for living during the year and he gives
us just great insight and information. Ryan, you're the best man.
Thanks for joining us.

Speaker 8 (29:27):
Appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
Dot. Let me get you to Dan byer get a
quick update Dan what he got.

Speaker 9 (29:31):
Doug a couple of things on tap.

Speaker 7 (29:32):
Stanley Cup Final game five tonight Oilers and panthersa eight
o'clock Eastern time from Sunrise. Florida Panthers try to close
it out again as they are up now three to
one in the best of seven series College World Series six,
thenning Florida State's up on North Carolina seven to five
in an elimination game in Omaha. Now storms are expected
in the area tonight, so the Kentucky Florida game that
was scheduled for this evening has already been postponed until tomorrow.

(29:56):
You're all twenty twenty four Portugal right now even We'll
check you at one apiece. In the eighty third minutes
earlier today, Turkey dropped Georgia three to one, while Francis
Killian and Bape is going to miss their match against
the Netherlands coming up on Friday because of the broken
nose that he suffered yesterday. Cowboys are signing former first
round pick cornerback Gary and Conley, who most recently played

(30:19):
in the UFL. Lakers will reportedly hire JJ Reddick as
their next head coach. That's according to multiple reports. Doug,
back to you.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
I mean, these people hiring coaches straight out of being
broadcasters and analysts that have no background in coaching. What
are they doing? Oh? Sorry, it is this, Mike on
my fault? About that.

Speaker 6 (30:37):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in

We get their unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road

way Tired buying used to be welcome in. You know
it's I was watching last night's game and it's kind

(31:12):
of a cool experience. I moved into my new house yesterday.
I had the team over. I like, how long you
had the house, coach? I was like ten hours? Ten hours.
So tried something a little different, Jays and I don't
know I have you ever done this. Basically, I bought
somebody's entire house. I mean they just took their clothes

(31:33):
and their pictures then, and I think it was probably
their second house because this is where I bought. It
is an area where people have a kind of lake
house sort of thing. So yeah, I mean, like the
whole thing was dialed and all set up, and it
was kind of awesome.

Speaker 5 (31:50):
A couple of things, a couple of items. I got
a couple of questions. So you went on the group
text yesterday with a selfie. Yeah, and there's a beautiful
lake in the back. Is that in or around your
new place?

Speaker 1 (32:04):
That is my twoth place, that's my new house.

Speaker 5 (32:06):
Unbelievable, unbelievable view. And then it's question number two.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
It is on the bay, Green Bay. So and maybe
this is more of a local question I can ask,
but you know, you always say on the bay and
they're like, well, what lake is that? Well that's Lake Michigan.
I know it's Green Bay. Well it's Lake Michigan. But
green Bay. It makes sense, like it's a bay, but
the water is Lake Michigan.

Speaker 5 (32:29):
Yeah, it makes sense to me. You know, the Hudson
Bay is the Atlantic Ocean.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
There you go, okay, and more questions go ahead, fire away.

Speaker 5 (32:38):
So about I don't know, four to six weeks ago,
Iowa Sam put on the group text a selfie with
his uh, Caitlin Clark t shirt slash jersey, jersey, whatever
it's called. And you your first response to his selfie
was you just violated a lot of guy codes with this.

(33:00):
Uh you were unclear on what guy codes he violated.
Was it because he sent a selfie on a group text?
And if so, did you violate that with your group
text yesterday?

Speaker 1 (33:11):
Well, I don't remember. I was Sam's selfie? Sam? What was?
What was your selfie?

Speaker 5 (33:15):
What?

Speaker 1 (33:17):
No, I'm serious, Like, I can't believe you're bringing this up.

Speaker 9 (33:21):
It was just it was when it was like April
when I got my Kaylen Clark shirsey and you wrote back,
You're like major guy code violation, and then yesterday you
sent us a selfie of you. I don't care at all.
I think it's great.

Speaker 7 (33:34):
I thought the violation was that you were wearing a
women's basketball Yes, I that.

Speaker 1 (33:39):
Was That was Actually the violation wasn't the selfie. You're
allowed to say sending selfie like why would? I just
don't know any dudes that would wear Kaylyn Clark jersey.

Speaker 9 (33:45):
Sorry, it's not a jersey, it's a suresey. It's a
shirt with numbers on it.

Speaker 1 (33:49):
Even worse.

Speaker 9 (33:49):
And what's even worse that is wrong with wearing a
women's athletes suresy jersey or shirt.

Speaker 1 (33:55):
Well, I'm anti shresey guy. It's like it's kind of
like going to Walmart and getting a jersey that's not authentic.
You're like a four doug Okay.

Speaker 5 (34:06):
Do you know?

Speaker 9 (34:07):
If again, like I don't make top dollar here, then
I'll buy a real Kaitlin Clark jersey, okay and send
you a selfie of it.

Speaker 1 (34:16):
I just it felt a little like a softball shirt.
That's what it felt like. Fine, good, you know, it
felt like a so a softball shirt working sports.

Speaker 9 (34:24):
Softball is a sport.

Speaker 1 (34:27):
Real softball is definitely a sport. Guys softball where they're
pounding beers and wearing jerseys.

Speaker 9 (34:32):
Love it.

Speaker 1 (34:34):
Yeah, I just that's really what Buyer kind of nailed it.
Mine was more I just I it was, Yes, it was.
It was not even a humble brag. It was just
a brag. But it was also just I had a
moment of zen, like you ever have you ever take
a chance on something and then you're like, Wow, this
is way better than I ever thought it would be.

(34:55):
That's what I had last night. I'm sitting on I
have a little a little dot that goes out into
the water, and I I was just I actually cracked open.
The guy left a bunch of beer in the basement
fridge that has this beautiful bar. I'm not much. I'm

(35:15):
not a huge beer guy. Although everybody tells me I
got to get this local beer. I don't know. So
I cranked cracked out. I had a really, really, really
long day yesterday. Not a bad day in anyway, just long.
And you know, in addition to closing in a house,
and you know, we started put guys through workouts, and

(35:37):
you know, we had two big commitments that were now
it's yesterday, and you got all kinds of other meetings,
and you had the radio show, and you had the podcast.
And I got done, and I'm sitting there looking out
the water and my entire life. I grew up in
Orange County, California, but I grew up Inland. I grew
up in the city of Orange, where you had to
drive to the beach. Even living in Newport Beach the

(35:59):
last seven years, I didn't live on the beach, on
the on the water, although the first home we moved
into you could see the back bay. But I mean,
haven't you ever thought what would it be like to
be able to walk out to look out at the
water every time you're in your house, or to walk
out and put your toes in the water. There's just

(36:21):
something very therapeutic about it, right. Reason it's expensive that way, right,
and you know, to walk out there. The weather was
absolutely perfect, and I just I was just taking a moment,
and then I just thought, I was you guys were texting,
You had the group text. I forget what. I don't
even know what the previous text was.

Speaker 5 (36:40):
Well, that was the thing because I had sent a
screenshot of a story where I don't know, some publication
was questioning whether or not Barkley's retirement was a negotiation
plot and we had just had the conversation or in
the show. You know, do you believe this retirement? And
you were full sale, yes, So I sent the screenshowtes hey,

(37:00):
you know this may have been a negotiation, And then
we all got the selfie of Doug in front of
the bay. So I didn't know if that was a response.

Speaker 1 (37:07):
It had nothing to do with it. I would just
be totally honest with you. I didn't open the story.

Speaker 5 (37:14):
There we go.

Speaker 1 (37:15):
I didn't know the story I was. I was watching
to be yeah, I mean, if we're really getting down
to it, I'm not allowed to mention names. But there's
a foreign player who was sending I have a couple
of scholarships still available, and a really good friend of
mine who I really respect, send me a foreign player yesterday.
And it's like one of those like I had a
couple of guys in mind, and then he sends to

(37:36):
this guy and we're all kind of freaking out, like
is this kid real? Can we do this? And so
I was I was completely distracted by the Barkley retirement.
I'm a bikerly discussion retirement.

Speaker 9 (37:49):
All right, Doug, I have a question for you.

Speaker 5 (37:50):
Go.

Speaker 9 (37:51):
So I was looking at Twitter and I saw two
pictures look very similar. It looked like your UW Green
Bay social media guy was hanging out with you. Was
he not at You're at your new spot? Because I
saw someone else drinking a Luke Combs beer It looked
very similar.

Speaker 1 (38:08):
No, no, no, that was that was what that was
was a reply? What did that tweet say? That guy's
not a So that's like a that's just a a
fan of the program.

Speaker 9 (38:19):
Okay. It was like it was like Green Bay Rising.
It was like that was the Twitter account and.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
No, it was something about like nothing like having a
you know something a summer a beer on a summer day.

Speaker 9 (38:29):
And like the same backset back.

Speaker 1 (38:31):
Well it's the same piece of body of water.

Speaker 5 (38:33):
Right yeah.

Speaker 9 (38:34):
But it was like it was like, I did you
see who.

Speaker 1 (38:38):
Replied to mine?

Speaker 9 (38:39):
No?

Speaker 1 (38:39):
AJ Dillon did.

Speaker 9 (38:41):
Okay, all right, there you go, mister Quadatron Yeah, Legatron, Quadzilla.

Speaker 1 (38:46):
Yeah, Quadzilla very notice Zilla got a whole network up there. Now.
He does not skip leg day. There's no question.

Speaker 9 (38:52):
Every day's like day fire.

Speaker 1 (38:53):
Did you have another one? I mean, just gie me,
Jay stud did you have another one? You had a
list of questions.

Speaker 5 (38:59):
No, Roger said those I thought we had. We needed
clarification on what guy code Sam was bricking.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
I mean he was laying the guy code of wearing
a wearing a women's professional sport.

Speaker 9 (39:11):
I'm a rule breaker every day all day.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
I mean we all like Kaitlyn Clark, I would I
wouldn't wear Caitlin Clark.

Speaker 9 (39:19):
You're not from Iowa City.

Speaker 1 (39:21):
I got it. Honestly, that probably gets you a normal pass.
But then when it becomes a suresy. You're like, yeah,
you lost the pass. Sorry, the Suresey feels like you
went into walmartin got it.

Speaker 9 (39:32):
Actually it was not cheap, it's from It was from
online and they do not discount those Kaitlyn Clark merchandise.

Speaker 1 (39:39):
Did Kaitlyn Clark get a piece of that action?

Speaker 9 (39:42):
I hope so, because I paid enough for her to
get a little piece of that.

Speaker 5 (39:45):
So, and he also gave the exact shirt and I'm
guessing a smaller size to Mansei I did, I mean
the three guys that work on the show with them
every day. He didn't get the suresey for well the thing, no, don't.
That's nothing new though. Back to the Cedar Rapids Colonel's.

Speaker 9 (40:01):
You got a hat though, did you not? Moncey got
a Caitlin Clark jersey because she gifted me with something else.
It was a little payback for that, a little little
payment back to her. So it was a little you know,
quid pro quo if you will. So there you go.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
I don't know quid pro quo is is the proper
for that?

Speaker 2 (40:23):
There?

Speaker 5 (40:23):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (40:23):
Well, you know it's been in the news in the
news a few years ago.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
Do you know what quid pro quo means it.

Speaker 9 (40:28):
Means you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.

Speaker 1 (40:30):
Yeah, so maybe, actually I guess it is. It's usually
used in a different way, but sure, nor.

Speaker 9 (40:35):
Of a negative sense.

Speaker 8 (40:36):
But no.

Speaker 9 (40:36):
Moncey was Verry jennerous to something earlier this year and
I was like, you know, let me hit you back,
and she's like, she picked out a style. She picked
up the same style I liked. So we both have
the same shirt.

Speaker 1 (40:46):
Said we're cute. Yeah, I think that's cute.

Speaker 9 (40:48):
It's adorable, it's really I hope we end up wearing
the shirts together in the same day by accident, Oh.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
My gosh, oh my god.

Speaker 7 (40:54):
Other people authentic jerseys and just gave her the jersey
and we got the exact same Nike allright, just making sure.

Speaker 1 (41:01):
Wait Nike makes that or does it have a Nike
swoosh on that somebody put on it, like the you know,
the local stream.

Speaker 9 (41:07):
Well, these were I either bought these jerseys. I think
I bought one from Shiels and I bought one from
Dick's Sporting Goods. So these are legit. So I think
they are in fact Nike brand.

Speaker 1 (41:20):
Here are they cotton yes? Or cotton? Bally blend, you know,
like I actually we just actually just had this discussion
during a break. Okay, so getting ready to have our
first like practice tomorrow, and I said, you know, I
think we probably should all wear the same stuff. And
our Adidas orders aren't said to come in until July first.

(41:44):
So my guy Caden, who goes by Maverick mav went,
I guess to the bookstore and picked up these matching
Green Bay basketball T shirts. But they're like a cotton blend,
and you know, I don't know how you guys feel
about it. Something about cotton. It feels like a camp
T shirt and they get itchy, and I was like,
really as opposed to you know, like the workout shirt

(42:06):
materials are more stretchy. And then I just didn't want
to have polos because I do think when coaches have
polos and they're coaching, you look like you just got
off a golf course. You don't look like you could
hop into a drill. I wanted to look like you
could hop into a drill.

Speaker 9 (42:19):
Yeah, these are definitely like the camp shirts. They're kind
of you know, like they don't form fit as much.
Yeah this is your typical T shirt.

Speaker 1 (42:26):
Sure, Yeah, not a huge fan of the of that,
of that that blend of fabrics. Just not a huge fan.
I want to do this. Okay, So the NBA Finals
are over and you get people saying that was the
worst NBA Finals ever? So was it? No, it's like

(42:48):
a legit question in your lifetime. What else was that
to that level of not really interesting? I mean, like, look,
last year's was a one versus eight. It was also
for one that wasn't a good finals. I thought Warriors
Celtics was pretty pretty good. Watch Bucks taking on the
Suns was not. That was in twenty one. That was

(43:10):
the post Covid year. Obviously, he kind of dismissed the
Lakers and the Heat just because it was in the bubble.
Warriors Raptors was actually really really interesting, even if it
wasn't great, because you know, the Warriors were just a
walking mass unit. That was the one that Kevin rant

(43:30):
tore his Achilles tenont In Warriors over the Calves when
they had KD was for for nothing, but it was
still was Lebron and the Calves. Like, I'm just interested
for you guys in what NBA Finals series would match
up to or surpass this NBA Final series in terms
of eh, not intend to watch buyer now you're more

(43:53):
the historical guy.

Speaker 7 (43:54):
Yeah, And I take offense to the Bucks series because
I do think that Giannis is, if anything, the fifty
burger Yeah points, you know, does stand out, not to
go back aways. But I don't remember anything from the
two thousand and three NBA Finals between the Spurs and Nets.
I don't remember a single I.

Speaker 1 (44:11):
Can I tell you. I mean no, I'm not doing
it to I actually have to tell you. This is
how I got my first job at ESPN Radio. It's
a real story. So the Spurs are playing the Nets.
That was Tony Parker's rookie year. Okay, And if you
remember at mid season, there were rumors they were trying
to trade for Jason Kidd, who was a point guard

(44:32):
of the New Jersey That's who they played in the
NBA Finals And in game I think it was Game
five because they won in six, right, and Game five
it was two to two. It was two two in
Game five. I remember I was at the game, and
I'll tell you a little quick backstory. A Game five,

(44:52):
Steve Kerr and Steve Smith came out of locker room.
They hadn't played in the first half, and Steve Kerr
only played in the second half of Game five, and
I think he hit three threes and they end up
winning the game and then winning Game six and winning
the championship. And why that was important is a guy
named John Martin. He went by Chief and he used
to run all remote for ESPN Radio. Remote is games

(45:14):
and the draft basically, and he was producing that game.
And a gentleman who used to run Fox Sport Trader
used to run ESPN Radio now runs Westwood One, is
named Bruce Gilbert. And I was trying to get the
attention of whomever because I wanted to do the NBA
draft that year. That was the Lebron James Carmelo, Anthony,

(45:35):
Dwayne Wade, Darko Millicid's draft. I played against Darko twice
when I was in Israel in the previous year, so
I called my I had done TV for a year
at ESPN, just done a handful of games, and then
I had done local radio in Oklahoma City and when
I was done, I went and played in France for

(45:56):
like a month and a half. When I came back,
I called the guy who hired me at ESPN, and
I was like, hey, I heard you're producing the draft,
he said, I am. I said, I'm your guy. My
dad's an AU coach. We know the high school guys.
My brother's a college coach. I just got done doing
a season of college basketball and I played overseas, so
I know Michael petrisports te out and I played against Darko.
He said, that's great. Maybe radio could use you. I

(46:18):
couldn't and I couldn't get this guy on the phone.
So I flew to New York. I auditioned for a
movie that was produced by I was directed by Spike
Lee's brother. I kid you not, and I let them
pay for the flight to audition me. And then I
went across the river to the old Continental Airlines Arena,
bought a ticket for Game five, walked down to the
floor when both teams were warming up, introduced myself to

(46:41):
John Martin. He's like, yeah, I've heard you, and I
said I'd love to do the draft. He's like, yeah, sure,
we'll set up travel. Call this lady and we'll see
you next week. And I literally the next week went
to the Marriott Marquis. That's where they had all the
press conferences. Lebron, James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh and
Carmelo Anthony, et cetera, et cetera, And I did the

(47:01):
NBA draft in the next the rest of his history. But anyway,
as far as the game, I agree with you. It
was a pretty non descript series.

Speaker 7 (47:09):
People point out the seven Spurs Calves final because it
was a sweep as one that was pretty nondescript. I
it was the Calves actually put up quite a fight
in Game four. But the series is going to be
over with anyway.

Speaker 1 (47:23):
Which was the one where Lebron James was cramping? That
was one. There's no air conditioning.

Speaker 7 (47:29):
Yeah, I think that was twenty fourteen because that's when,
because the Heat won it in twenty twelve and twenty thirteen,
and then it was the next year in twenty fourteen.
Then the Warriors won it in twenty fifteen.

Speaker 5 (47:41):
There you go.

Speaker 1 (47:43):
So where does this rank in terms of worst period series,
period ever period?

Speaker 9 (47:48):
I'll say this, I didn't think it was entertaining at all.

Speaker 7 (47:51):
And I completely blamed the Dallas Mavericks like they are
the reason, Like it's not to rain on the Parade
of Boston at all. You laid out the case for
you know, the best team all season, was the best
team in the playoffs. No disrespect to them at all.
It just had no moments play, you know, stuff that

(48:11):
you'll go back and think about. None of that.

Speaker 9 (48:13):
And I blamed Dallas for that.

Speaker 7 (48:15):
So I don't think it's very memorable.

Speaker 9 (48:17):
But it's not the fault of the Boston Celtics.

Speaker 1 (48:19):
Wait, I understand when you blamed Dallas just because they're
not that good or they did something else wrong.

Speaker 7 (48:23):
Other No, just you know, like even last night, like
in the first quarter and you're just seeing like how
they're just it's the way that Boston could get easy baskets.
You're like, all right, this thing is over. So it
wasn't even even if it's a ten point game, which
then extended to twenty and then you have Peyton Pritchard
hitting some half court shots. But to me, there was
just there wasn't drama in it.

Speaker 1 (48:44):
No, there was no drama. That was drama US. That
was that was drama us. That was that series felt like,
what's the I think he's a comedian actor on Ferris
Bewer's day Off, Buehler Beuler, ben Stein, that's ben Stein,
and then didn't need to ben Stein's money that's that's
what that series was like. Buehler, Buehler, Buehler, Buehler, Buehler,
