Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottli Show. Here's in
the bonus with Doug Gottli.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Dog Gottlieb Show, with the Bonus, Fox Sports Radio, I
Heart Radio. Welcome in. I hope you're doing well. You
know I was. I was looking, and no, I'm not
doing the snubbed list for Major League Baseball's All Stars.
That's of the things we do. They're dumb. That's that's
that's top ten dumb, top ten dumb, dumb things. But
(00:31):
what I will do is with the thirty thirty two
first time a Major League Baseball stars thirty two. So
here's what I want to do. I will well, I'll
tell you on equivocally, there's about thirty of those thirty two.
I have no idea who they are, but I'm not
I can't say I'm hardcore baseball guy. So what I
(00:51):
wanted to do was, I frankly wanted to just quiz
Jason and see if he knew how many of these
you know, how many these guys he actually knew? Right, Like,
you know who Bobby Witt Junior, you know who he is,
Eldie de la Cruz everybody fell in love with last year, right,
And I think it's Paul Skeans. Everybody knows pitches for
(01:13):
the Pittsburgh Pirates at pitching for LSU and winning a
national championship. I would also guess that Jackson Merrill and
Mason Miller, you know correct? Right? Okay, so those ones
aren't really aren't really that hard. But of the rest
(01:36):
of the younger guys, like now, it gets to be
super super interesting, like Jared Duran or Tanner Tanner Hawke.
Do you know Tanner Hawk or Janner Duran.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Well, they're both Red Sox. Yeah, outfielder and pitcher.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yep, Kirby Yates.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
He is the closer closer for the Rangers.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, let's see here. Garrett Crochete.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Garrett crochet is, Yeah, he's a White Sox starter.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Damn, that's good. You're really good. Isaac Paradas Paratas is
a Ray devil ray. Does he have his his lap,
his laptop? Hope up? What is what is going on here?
Chotta among Managa.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
He's one of the best pictures in the National League
right now for the for.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
The Cubs, yeah, uh, could tell? Marte, could tell.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Marte is the second basement of the d Backs. Good player.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, Ryan McMahon.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
McMahon, is that how you pronounce it? I don't know, Sam,
I know the third basement for the Rockies. McMahon just
sounds like a made up name.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
What is it? I don't know, McMahon.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
It's mc confirmation from mccope, that is McMahon.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Thank you, Nick cop McMahon. Okay, Uh, you know who
Clay Holmes is? Correct? Corbyn Burns, Adley Rashman, Rushman excuse me?
David Fried? You know David Fry is?
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (03:27):
I think this is our first miss. He must be
a middle reliever. Nope, David Fry base damn it missed?
What is d H?
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Cleveland Guardians?
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Wow, that's a deep one, man, I should know that one. Yeah.
Now he's leading the league and hitting. He's good. He's
an outfitter for the Guardians.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Uh, Josh Naylor.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
He's a d H for the Guardians or first.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Basement first baseman. Emmanuel Clase.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, he's their closer Clisse.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Class I say, Alec Brahm, Alec baumy Alec Bam. Excuse me?
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Is the Phillies third basement him?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Wow? This is pretty good. You've actually missed one.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
That's crazy and I'm pretty pissed off at that. I
thought Fry was like a middle reliever, but he's a
productive hitter and I don't know about him.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
That sucks close enough, close enough. Well, look, we'll talk
about this a little bit later on in the podcast.
I love Major League Baseball's also game. Why do we
have to expand to thirty two players? I mean enough, already,
just enough? Why do we have to expand to thirty
two players? And why do we have to continue having
(04:43):
every team have an All Star? I don't understand that.
It's like we're making the most select what's supposed to
be the most select all Star game in all of sports,
a lot less select.
Speaker 1 (04:54):

The Fox Safe.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Every day at this time the Doug Gotlib Show. In
the Bonus podcast, we played for you a previous portion
of this show, or of this show, or of any
show on the Fox Sports Radio networker on Fox Sports One.
In this case, we'll take it at Dan Patrick's show.
He said this about the Warriors dynasty.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
The Golden State Warriors, the artist formerly known as the
Dynasty no longer talk about how you build a dynasty.
It's not just getting those two or three players bringing
in a couple of guys in free agency. Golden State
did it, you know where, you do it the old
fashioned way. You draft, And if you look at who
(05:51):
they drafted and when they drafted them, anybody could have
had Klay Thompson. Anybody could have had Steph Curry, and
anybody could have had Draymond Green, especially Draymond and Clay.
But they take those players and the interesting part isfed.
They whiffed on James Wiseman number two pick overall, But
if you hit on the other ones where you get
(06:13):
Hall of Fame players, it makes up for golly. They
missed on James Wiseman with the second pick in the draft,
so they had opportunities to add to that roster. And
even with a whiff with the second pick overall, they
still held. And you know what, I give Golden State
a lot of credit because their ownership, they spent more money,
they went over the luxury tax, but they kept everybody
(06:35):
together even when Klay Thompson was out for pretty much
two years with injuries. They kept him, they paid him,
They were loyal to everybody.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yeah, I mean, like, look, the similar there are some
similarities there. There are some definite similarities in regards to
in regards to the Celtics, Steinydnasty and the Warriors, dynasties
coming to an end. You know, That's that's the reality
(07:06):
to it. There are there are some There are definitely
some similarities there, and the similarities are that they had
a great run. Injuries and some age ended up, you know,
diminishing some of it. They brought in great players from elsewhere,
and you know, with a second pick in the draft,
(07:28):
they whift you know, for the Celtics it was the
death of Len Bias. For them it was James Wiseman
who they who never really developed, and they also traded
away before they could ultimately see if it if it
worked out for what they were doing. But there's no
question they were first in with the ability to play small,
not just embracing the three point shot, going away from
(07:49):
pick and roll action. Uh, it was really really remarkable
to see exactly what that transformed itself into and how
it changed league forever. This is Rachel Nichols talking about
the lakers lack of trades or significant signings this offseason.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
Well, Clay was the one they were really close on, right,
and they made him a good offer, and he just
decided that he would rather go to Dallas, in part
because they are championship contenders, no state tex Is. There
a whole bunch of reasons. His father was actually the
most disappointed Laker fan of all that Clay didn't pick
the Lakers. But sometimes that's going to happen, right, You're
not going to get everyone, and you're not going to
(08:29):
be everyone's first choice. Normally, we see an active plan B,
Plan C, Plan D from a front office if Plan
A doesn't work.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
We didn't see that from the Lakers.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
Now, you don't have to make a lot of noise
to be an effective general manager. Sam Presty moves in
silence like Lasagna.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Right, he's that.
Speaker 5 (08:47):
Kind of g and we don't We don't see what
he's going to do until he does it, and then bam,
he pulls something off. So maybe Rob Link had all
kinds of discussions and we don't know about them, but
we didn't hear very much about other guys that other
teams did go after very aggressively that other teams did
work out complicated sign and trades for that sort of thing.
(09:09):
The Klay Thompson deal ended up being a sixteen deal
just to get all of the different factors right, and
the Lakers were not involved in those kinds of discussions.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Nothing Rachel said is inaccurate, But what she wasn't willing
to do is go underneath the surface. Why, you know,
why won't anybody go play for the Lakers? Why wouldn't
Klay Thompson A myriad of reasons in no state taxes,
get the fuck out of here with the state taxes, right,
Clay already lives in California. He's already paying state income
(09:39):
taxes or you know, and property taxes to some level
as well. So it's just again, it's it's a complete
non discussion. What what should be discussed is why would
a guy turn down what we think is his dream team. Now,
if you want to say, hey, it's because he's a warrior,
they're the Lakers. They've been rivals, Like, Okay, I'll buy that,
(09:59):
although the Maverick, you know, not really a rival, but
still in the in the Western Conference, I'm not really sure.
That that works. But the lack of telling us why
tells us why. The lack of telling us why tells
us why. This is Brady Quinn LeVar Arrington talking about
Browni's first Summer League game.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
I watched it.
Speaker 6 (10:21):
He struggled, which that's nothing new if you've seen his game.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
But look, he's a young player.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
He's got time to develop. He needs to be out
there playing, though it's tough when you're not healthy, you
can't be out there getting better. But it was exactly
what he was defined to be as a prospect.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
He struggles shooting.
Speaker 6 (10:41):
I mean, he couldn't even make a couple of free throws,
but you saw, you know the way I lean at
least athletically, how he can attack, how well try to
play defense.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
The problem is the more time we see him.
Speaker 6 (10:52):
Especially in you know, defensively speaking, he's going to struggle,
Like he's going to struggle being able to switch on
screens because you can't match up with guys or going
to be seven eight nine ten inches taller in him,
and that's unfortunately the position that he's going to be
in often being what six one and a half or
whatever he was at the NBA combine.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
Yeah, he moved around pretty good. He just couldn't make
a shot. You know, maybe that's nerve.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yeah, I mean, listen, you guys heard some of my analysis.
You know, I don't care about the shot making. My
thing is he was fine, but he did not look
like a guy who you would draft. He did not
stick out in any sort of way. And you know this,
all this talk about he's really a point guard. There's
(11:37):
nothing about how he plays which tells me he's a
point guard. And yeah, I actually know this because I
was a point guard and I am a coach and
I talked to my point guards all the time about, hey,
point guard looks feels different. You want the ball, You
also want to pick up the ball ninety four feet,
but you don't go and stand in the corner and hide,
which is kind of what he does. Listen and listen.
(11:58):
Some of that is habits, but some of it is
that's kind of who he's always been, you know. So
I just I really feel like we're forcing something which
is not there. And as I told you what happened,
they're going to manage his minutes, his exposure. They want
them to look bad, and that I don't understand. We
(12:19):
want to develop him, and then he plays one game
and we shut him down to say his knees sore.
I mean I was told that he was being shut
down for game two, you know, thirty minutes after game one.
So I don't think his knee was sore. I just
think it was this was the plan all along. But
I don't understand the process of development if he's not
(12:39):
actually playing, because that's what he needs to do, is
to play in order to develop. So it's like you're
trying to please two different parts. You know, you're trying
to keep his confidence up and not expose him. On
the other hand, you're trying to develop him. That's really
hard to do. Just is that's what the Fox said?
Speaker 1 (12:57):
What does the food say? Short of catch live editions
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern
noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Let's find out who or what is annoying Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
And now it's your annoying.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
All right, Doug. The SoundBite of the of Sunday. SoundBite
of Sunday. I did find it interesting that even though
Anthony Edwards is holding a microphone, not one media outlet
picked up the actual sound of the microphone. So this
is a sound from somebody's cell phone of Anthony Edwards
on a microphone explaining his role on this current team
(13:45):
USA team.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
I'm getting number one, I said, I mean, yeah, I
might look at it different. I'll just go out myself
shoot my shops like defense. They got pity interfare around me.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
So this is what I think is annoying about this.
I don't know basketball like you do. Maybe he is
the number one option. Maybe there's no other choice. I
don't I don't know, but here's what I don't like
about it. I think we saw the immaturity of Anthony
Edwards throughout the past playoff season, you know, yucking it
up after losses and kind of bringing a grab ass
(14:22):
at the at and the press conferences, and it was
just like I think the immaturity in the end probably
was the end of the Tea Wolves. And then you
get into this position where you're supposed to be deferential.
I don't care if you are the number one option.
You're playing with a bunch of guys that are alphas,
and you just be deferential to the veterans. And I
(14:43):
think the annoying. Part of it is that he hasn't
matured anymore in recent weeks.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Is it differential or reverential?
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Deferential?
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Differential? Okay, I would agree with you, like what is
the win in it? And this feels like, you know,
it's like it's almost like you're talking to your buddies
and yet you're not. You're talking to the media. You know,
you talk about your buddies, you puff out your chest
and you say things that you know, I caught a
fish this big, when the reality is you didn't catch
(15:15):
a fish at all, you know, So I'm with you.
I don't know what the win is for Anthony Edwards.
It does feel like hop and bravado, and it feels
it screams immaturity. Actually, you nailed it. I would love
to say you missed on something, but you didn't. You
nailed it on that one.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Including deferential. By the way, Doug Gottlieb, I've told people
Doug has a way of making you second guess things
that you know are facts, Like if Doug has a knock,
I don't know what that is. But if you told me,
like Derek Jeeter didn't play for the Yankees, I'd be like, yeah,
he did, and then i'd have to google it because
you have that. So here's the definition of deferential, respectful,
(15:53):
mark by or showing proper regard for another's higher status.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
What is reverential?
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Reverential showing reverence very close?
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Right?
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Right? Is containing a nature of reference?
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Now, wow, No, reverential is just about illusions or references,
haven't I've.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Been using that word wrong all the time? Referential reverential
interesting to have reverence.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Oh, reverential interesting, irreverence, reverence versus irreverent There it is
reverential rev you're using it right, Just don't say referential,
all right.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
So so so we're both right.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
Yep, Yeah, reverential and deferential are both the same meaning.
So it's awesome, yay. And I'm guessing people that are
learning English hate that about our language. Just fucking pick
a word, that's what they're they. So this pertains to
talk radio from like nineteen ninety to about ten years ago,
(17:10):
since nobody really talks about baseball anymore on a national
radio show. The annoying part of All Star Announcements was
that radio producers all around the country had a built
in segment the next day snub Radio. Oh, yeah, who's
the biggest snub I'll take your calls. And here's the thing, though,
(17:32):
there's always a rule. If you're gonna say somebody was snubbed,
you need to take somebody off. And that's the tricky part,
some poor guy. And the key to baseball too is
every team needs a representative. So you just can't take
Joe Schmoe off the Pirates if he's the only guy.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
So well, by the way, that rule is stupid, that
rual stupid. Every team does not have an All Star.
Why did the Chicago White Sox have to have an
All Star?
Speaker 3 (18:02):
It was it was d I before DEI. It's it's
really kind of it's equitable, you know.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
But looks I understood, I understand. The initial implementation of
it was, Hey, we don't get to say this chance
to see these guys play. That's not the case anymore.
If you want to see somebody play, you can literally
watch any team play any day of the week. So
why why do we do this? Now? The National League
sees the American League as well. I don't. I don't.
I don't need the Chicago White Sox, who are twenty
(18:31):
six and sixty six, do have an All Star. I don't.
I don't need the Oakland Athletics to have an All Star.
You know you don't. I don' don't have to have
the Florida Marlins, Miami Marlins, whatever. Why do they have
an All Star? Somebody explain that one to me. There
is no explanation for it.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
It's a town. Until you're annoying too. That's a good one.
That's an extra one.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
No question, why do we have why do we have
an arcane? And again, if the answer we say this
all the time, if the answer is because it's the
way it's always been done, that's not a good enough answer.
And for that baseball, why.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
Are we doing this because we can.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
This? This part of this specific SoundBite is getting a
lot of attention Doug, because I guess there are people
that interpret the phrase differently. You know, if I were
to say I fuck with me and I fuck with
Doug Gottlieb, like that could be taken certain ways by
a certain group of people. So this is Paul George
(19:44):
on his relationship with Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
Oh, Kawhi, that conversation. I called him up and was
just like, man, listen, you know, I think I'm gonna
go elsewhere. Like, conversations with the Clippers didn't go how
I wanted to. I kind of broke down on how
I told you guys how it all played out, you know,
And and we had that conversation and I was like, man,
(20:08):
like I got to do what's best. And uh, I
mean he understood. He like like, I mean, go get
your back, like Pete, go get your back. You know,
I can't even be mad at you, you know. So
you know, I thought, you know, and I look at
Kawhi as one of my best friends in this in
this league, you know, somebody that you know, I fuck with,
(20:29):
like you know, our families, you know, love each other,
you know. So it was tough to leave him just
with you know how much I enjoyed being out there
with him. It was it was that was one of
a big decision too. That weighed a lot on me.
Was just damn, I'm leaving my boy, Like leave it.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
Why? But I had to have that conversation with him.
Speaker 7 (20:51):
We talked, and you know, he he gave me his
blessing stuff like man, just you know, go do what's
best for you.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
That's a weird one. The whole situation is weird, but
yes in terms of why can we play for you
because we can? Yes? The the I fuck with what's eye?
Fuck with him is a is actually a positive. It's
it's the new bad was good, so okay, yeah, it's new.
Why do we play for you because we can? All Right,
(21:20):
that's it for the end of the Modes podcast. Check
out the radio show every day on the Doug Gottlieb
Show Fox Sports Radio.
