Speaker 2 (00:18):
Happy Monday to you. The All Star break is here.
The All Stars will shine tomorrow night on Fox, but
they're gonna hit some dingers tonight with the home run Derby.
Welcome in as we're broadcasting love from the Tirec dot
com studios. Tirec dot com will help you get there
at unmeant selection, fast free shipping, free road as a protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirec dot com the
(00:39):
way tire buying should be. Training camps in the NFL
will be getting underway within the next week or so.
Sec media days going on, but with no baseball, with
soccer done and now with the All Star break here,
the no baseball portion of it, it truly does feel
like summer. But again, Aaron, it's only gonna last for
about four days and then I feel like we transition
(01:00):
to fall because we'll be coming off of those SEC
media days. As I mentioned, the NFL training camps players
will start reporting as soon as next week. Like the
the summer, while it may feel like it just began,
also feels like it's about to end as we're getting
into a busy, busy time of year. But a little
lull in the action right now.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
I don't know if it's because we work in sports,
and I'd be curious for your perspective. I feel like
once the football stuff starts, even though the season itself
doesn't start till Labor Day for college football a week
later for the NFL, I kind of feel like this
the summer is over now. I'll still I still have
one other get little getaway, and it's not over over,
But it's like when I when I see those pads,
(01:39):
like I feel like, you know, the uh, the smell
of the ground, like it's just it.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
It kind of feels like it's over for us. And
the crazy thing Caleb Williams still not under contract, Like
how does this not happen? How does he not just
sign up? I didn't even know the ill and uh
and like that would be the easiest contract to do, right,
I mean, you would think so.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
But he suppose he doesn't have an agent for that
exact reason, right, because there's a rookie hay scale that
he knows that you know what the contract is, so
he's like, why would I hire an agent?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
So football on the horizon. But still there's some summer left.
I do also as well, have some other summer plans.
But yeah, five first round picks yet to be signed.
Roma Dunze also with the Bears, not signed, JJ McCarthy
hasn't signed with the Vikings, Dallas Turner, and then Amarius
Mims of the Bengals. The five players first round picks
(02:30):
yet to sign their rookie deals. If you're a Bears fan,
you probably hate it, which allows us to transition to
our favorite Monday segment at this time, a little bit
of love and hate from the weekend. What did you love? God,
I love you?
Speaker 4 (02:43):
And what did you hate?
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Meet these player hays. This is where we bring in
Jason Stewart, Papa Bear, Ryan McBain and Kevin Wired to
hang out with Aaron Torres and I and talk about
the weekend that was. The things we love, the things
we hated. Our executive producer is Jason Stewart who came
up with this idea. Jason, you get the start things off.
(03:06):
What you love about this past weekend. Hey guys, Hey Jason,
could I start with Caitlin Clark. Yes, Okay, So Dan
just said it was no big deal last hour. So
I guess that's what I will take issue with. I
like the fact that she went into this whatever the
Minnesota team's name is, and put it in the face
(03:27):
of the Minnesota Whigs head coach, who also is in
charge of the I guess she's the head coach of
the Olympic team. And she actually said this prior to
the game. On the expected pro fever crowd at the
Links game, she says, I don't give two s hs
about that, So she had she had a real big
(03:47):
attitude about it. Then she was asked about the future
of national the national team, and she says, why the
hell would I answer a national team question. I'm not
even in charge of the roster. So she's got a
road chip on her shoulder and I automatically can't stand her.
So Kaitlyn Clark winning the game, and she'd had a
couple of Kaitlyn Clark moments. I love those moments.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
Where she just hits like logo three and looks at
the crowd or looks at the other bench. That's the
Kaitlyn Clark that I fell in love with. That's the Trands.
What was it transend sendant uh Caitlin Clark that I
want to see more often. I loved that game.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Again, they play all home games because everybody cheers for
that was the thing. I didn't think it was as
huge of a deal because you had it as close.
That can maybe be my hate.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Moving on real quick, Dianae Troze a little bit banged up.
It's not out of the rum of possibility that the
Olympics might have a spot. If I was miss who what,
Miss thag whoever is in charge of you know, the
Minnesota links over there, I might check my ego at
the door a little about Kaitlin Clark because she might
be the twelfth young lady on your bench here going forward.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
So just you know, could you imagine if that went
pick team doesn't choose Caitlin Clark after this whole thing,
and they just go to some no name because she's
better defense or something.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
They needed that they needed that lockdown defender. Aaron Torres,
what did you love from this past weekend.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Well, he touched on in an hour one of the
Doug Gottliebs Show. I guess I'm a copa guy now.
I just I loved everything about the tournament. I know
the tournament extended well beyond this weekend, but again, just
like you said, Dan, the way it fit on the
calendar kind of really ramped up post NBA Finals and
even the NBA Finals. Remember we had ten days with
no games after the conference finals, and then the finals
(05:36):
were done pretty quickly, so there wasn't a lot of
basketball from the start of the Conference finals. On every
single night it delivered. The crowds were amazing. You know,
maybe a little bit too much so last night, but
crowds were amazing, quality of play was amazing, and I
just enjoyed every single thing about it. Was a great tournament,
(05:57):
a great end last night after midnight, Argentina scores that
goal in extra time. I'm not even a huge soccer guy,
but it just felt like every single night that tournament
was awesome.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
All right, Kevin Wyarts, what did you.
Speaker 6 (06:12):
Love watching Charles Barkley play golf as we do every year,
like Tahoe at the American Century Championship.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Goal mine, now, go ahead, keep going.
Speaker 6 (06:21):
He actually had his best finish ever at fifty eighth,
and apparently there are a lot of people who bet
on him to finish in the top seventy five, so
everyone was a winner all around. Watching Charles Barkley uses
beautiful golf swing that we all love so much.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
It has gotten significantly better than the herky jerky that
you had seen before. I was going to say this
that there are certain things in the summer that make
you know it summer, and the American Century Championship in
Tahoe is one of those. Golf fans, by the way,
really hate this event like they truly do. Like the
(06:56):
people who love golf, they hate everything about it because
it is just a bunch of celebrities, usually crappy celebrities
and former athletes, playing like there's a problem with it.
But I love it. You loved it for Barkley, Marty
Fish ended up winning it. I like to see the
guys who can actually play a little bit, and it
does get competitive, So Kevin, I'm right along with you.
(07:18):
That was gonna be my love for today.
Speaker 6 (07:19):
It matches the vibe because I'm not a huge golfer,
But I just like to go out, be outside and
hit the ball around. And that's what that tournament seems
more about, is just people having a good time. It's
not the buttoned up affair that you see in all
these major golf tournaments. So that's why I had a
lot of fun watching it. Plus seeing Barkley out there,
even if his swing has improved, is very amusing.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Sure there's a scoring system as well that is different.
Instead of under par, you give points, kind of like
the Stableford scoring system. I don't think it's exactly that,
but it at least Yeah it's Hey, a par Is
good A par Is good news with that, so I
will piggyback off of yours. That was gonna be my
Scottish Open is great. Robert McIntyre kind of got a
questionable drop on sixteen while the eagle to end up
(08:02):
allowing him to set up for his birdie on eighteen
to win it. But for the golf this weekend, I'm
with it. Ryan Babo bet, what did you love from
this weekend?
Speaker 7 (08:11):
Well this is not sports related, but Jason gave me permission,
so I'm gonna go with this. As you know, I'm
a huge nerd. You are always calling me a nerd,
and that's fine. I have no problem with that. I
love my TV shows and I love this show, House
of the Dragon, and the latest episode was great. I
hooked in. I know it's sci fi dragons, it's very nerdy,
but it has everything I want, violence, betrayal, It's one
(08:34):
of the very few shows that everyone on the show
is just a horrible person. I will say this fit
you very well, thank you.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
I will say this Number one, Ryan is the one
who calls himself a nerd. I said, there is no
such thing. Number two. I also watched the House of
the Dragon, but because of my vacation plans, I have
not seen the last two episodes so did not see
last night, so I ask for no spoilers. But it's okay.
Every time he starts to talk about anything, he says
it's nerd talk. And the only time that I'll call
(09:02):
you a nerd is if someone says that it isn't
just for the joke of it. I got a mini
helmet to add to my NFL mini helmet collection this weekend,
and I'm thinking about doing a full reveal on social media.
A full reveal of it Okay, yeah, I would absolutely
love to do that. Okay, are you locked in the
(09:22):
love and hate Torres love and hate?
Speaker 3 (09:25):
I am.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
I am locked in a lot. I don't know if
you are, Like I mean, this is our staple here
on Monday, like this is where we are.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
I'm actually really pondering my hate because I haven't really
totally settled on anything yet.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
But anyway, all right, keep going, all right, there are
loves for the weekend. It's time for something by the way,
okay or second to last, all right, Yeah, I'm going
to start off. I hate that I don't have a
PS five because the EA Sports College Football Game is
out if you pre ordered it, and it is the
buzz around social media right now, and I feel completely
(10:02):
left out. My freshman year in college, which was almost
thirty years ago, I kid you not when I say
we had about twelve to fourteen guys on the floor
all in one college football EA Sports League on Sega Genesis,
where we had our buddies leave their dorm room unlocked
(10:23):
so someone could play their game, because everybody had to
play their game before you could advance the week. And
so now here we are, thirty years later with this
magnificent technology. This more than a decade wait for this
game to come out, and I don't have the system
to be able to play the game, and I just
I'm at an age where I don't know if I
should purchase it or not. I would probably buy the
(10:46):
golf game as well, and maybe the NHL game, And
I'm like, well, maybe my kid could get into it
at some times, but do I want him to have
a video game system that he can play right now?
He's only three, so he's not going to be playing it.
But I just feel I have this huge, huge piece
of fomo right now for everybody talking about the college
(11:07):
football game from EA Sports that will be fully released
later this week, but people are getting their heads up
on it today really quickly.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
This isn't my hate, but I was thinking. I was
even gonna ask you today, like are we talking about
the game, And I will say my thought process is
very similar to yours.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
I know I will get.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Addicted to it and my my life will crumble around me,
and the things that I need to get done to
keep a roof over my head will not get done
because I'll be playing so much.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
Allow me, allow me to talk you into those Dan,
let me give you one one thing that might sell
you on this. I have I think you're thinking about
cutting the court. If I'm not mistaken, Matt, you.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Thought about it, Yes, I half I have thought about it.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
The PS five is the transition from your cable or
satellite because you all the apps, all the streaming apps,
including your YouTube TV with with live TV is on
the PS five and you have a controller. It's it's
the functionality, it's the the best functionality just to do
the cut the cord. So I would say the PS
(12:04):
five would would be for the video game for sure,
but I think it would also work in your transition
away from your cable.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
And I know I'm a little older than Aaron. Jason
and I are similar in age, and I think we're
a little older than Kevin and Ryan are. I just
I grew up on TV. It is so difficult for
me to actually cut that cord. I feel like your
guys generation has an easier time. And Jason being able
to do it actually now makes me think, well, if
(12:31):
he could do it, because I consider you my generation, Jason,
that I actually can.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Do this, you won't miss it at all. Really, because
I haven't cut the cord eat it for that reason.
I just for the sports element of it. I like
flipping around, but flipping cheryls.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Honestly, I feel like I can get every sport that
I need, but I want to make sure that I
have my golf and my golf that I that I need,
and I think I can get that through Peacock. So
I don't know. It's something to think about. But of
course I also have to run up by the wife.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
All right, there my hate the EA sports fomo. I
came up with one. Okay, if you're ready, Okay, So
Friday Night Summer League began. First of all, I hate
that the narrative became Bronnie James sold out some league.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
No he didn't.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
The first day always sells out, especially when the Lakers play.
And by the way, they played up the street in
San Francisco, and there were like two hundred people in
those games, So that is.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Part of what I hate.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
But what I really hate is that the Houston Rockets
played the Los Angeles Clippers in those games and the
number three overall pick the or number four of riech
Ephard Well, he was the first American player. Yeah, he
was the first player. He played and he was awesome,
which is great. That's what you want to see from
(13:44):
the number three overall pick to the point that people
were like, just shut him down. Now he's already shown
everything he needs to do. And so it then became
this narrative. And you know, I'm a college hoops guy
of oh, caliperodids startup and then he's the worst.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
I hate Caliperry.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
You know why Kentucky lost the opening round of the
NCAA tournament. It was because Reach Shepherd, your savior. No
pun intended, because you know Shepherd's kind of the reason
they lost an opening round tournament game is because Ree
Shepherd played the worst game of his career three points
on one of five shooting. For comparison's sake, two games
before that, he had twenty seven points at Tennessee. The
(14:26):
reason they lost is not Cali Perry. It is because
your savior did not play well. Can we get over
the Calipery stuff. But every time Reached Shepherd plays well
from now until the end of time, it's going to
be an indictment on how terrible Calipari is.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
I also thought it was Gulky's ten threes, like that
didn't help at all either of them losing.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Yeah, exactly, No, it's just it's a dumb narrative. But
every time Reached Shepherd or Rob Dillingham plays well, it's
just going to be an indictment on how terrible Joht.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
By the way, is Gulky in Summer League? I think
I saw him. Okay, maybe we could track this down.
Kevin Wyre, do you have a hate from.
Speaker 6 (14:59):
The Oh, yes, that one's easy for me. The La
Dodgers blowing two leads in the ninth inning, and this
came after a kick in the groin earlier in the
week when they got swept by the Phillies, getting outscored
by double digits.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Then they went to Detroit.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
God it went on Friday, like, all right, the Detroit
Tigers are under five hundred, we can get a sweep,
Go get some positive momentum in the All Star break,
had a five run lead in the ninth inning on Saturday,
Evan Phillips blows it. They then cough up the lead
on a Sunday and the Dodgers, instead of looking like
they were turning in the right direction bouncing back from
that horrible sweep against the Phillies, now have a lot
(15:33):
of question marks considering the fact that they basically have
an all star lineup on the injured list.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
So the Dodgers really six of their last seven right yeses,
Jason Stewart, Does that go along your lines of hate
or are you going a different route as a Dodger fan?
Speaker 5 (15:49):
It wasn't on my list of hey, but I will
say they're they're finding new and exciting ways to lose,
which the Dodgers are not supposed to be doing because
last week was the offense and now this is the bullpen.
So that sucks. But what I do hate is that
I made one hundred dollars bet with Doug on whether
or not he would throw a strike when he did
the first pitch at the Brewers game on Friday night. Now,
(16:11):
I've seen photos and I've seen a video. The video
is of him just pitching the ball. I have yet
to see the result of the pitch. Now, the fact
that Doug has not sent me a DM or a
message saying give me my hundred bucks probably means that
it's not a strike. But I need somebody out there,
one of our listeners, if you have video of where
the ball went. I have yet to be given confirmation
(16:34):
whether or not it's a ball or strike. That's right
in limbo for one hundred dollars.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Yeah, no idea. I could see that. I didn't think
it was a strike. In seeing Doug's form, I didn't
think it was a strike.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
Okay, so just seeing his form, but you haven't seen
any results.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
Yeah, I thought I was. I didn't think it was
a strike. But he looked a little disappointed, right, Yeah, Yeah,
that's the feeling I got. All right, Papa Beart, wrap
up this time.
Speaker 7 (16:58):
Ten QB is a joke. I don't know why Joe
Burrow is number two. Talk about living off past success. Yes,
you beat Pats Mahomes two years ago, but the dude
is injury prone? Why is he number two? That's laughable? Also,
Dak Prescott not that great? Why is he number ten?
And have we forgotten about Jordan Love?
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Hello?
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Am I missing something great? That's what really ticks me off.
That's that's what really chaps my hide. It's funny that
Jordan Love wasn't in the top ten, but Stroud was.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Up to seven. It is a fact, totally fair, you
know of in that point? Maybe Love was eleven. Maybe
that's the point, we got a couple of dak caters here.
I think dadkn's a bad rap, but a little bit.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
It does speak credence to like. First of all, I
just totally whipped on Jordan Love. It gets really pretty
questionable after about number six. By the way, did confirm
Jack Golkie is playing Summer League for the Oklahoma City Thun.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
There we go perfect wraps up Love and Hate.
Speaker 4 (17:56):

(18:30):
the air on the air with us right now FS
one and FSR, NBA Insider and Analystripuker joints the program
as he does every Monday. Hello, Rick, how are you?
Speaker 8 (18:40):
I'm good, gentlemen, how are we doing good?
Speaker 2 (18:43):
And I'll tell you what. There was some news in
the NBA over the last week that just just feel
good news, and it is if you're a Knicks fan.
Jalen Brunson gets his new deal. Whatever the money is
on the surface, the fact is it sure feels that
Jalen brunts In is taking less for the good of
the team. What do you think think about Jalen Brunton's
new deal that has him staying in New York on
(19:03):
the long term.
Speaker 8 (19:04):
I think it says two things. One, NBA players are
now getting paid more money than they know what to
do with. And as we go forward knowing the TV deal,
I mean, look, he is in a sense making a
sacrifice because it is sures that they're able to keep
all the Villanova guys together and it gives them some
(19:26):
flex and some short term flexibility in terms of what
they're doing. But it's not as if one that he's
going to miss out on that money short of having
a career ending injury, and career ending injuries just don't
seem to be part of the equation anymore. When you
have a Klay Thompson who comes back from a ruptured
achilles and a torn acl and still comes back in
(19:48):
plays and signs yet another contract after the fact, even
if it wasn't what he expected, that just doesn't happen.
So and meanwhile, it such a good will gesture in
a place like New York that has been starving for
a guy that doesn't seem to just be there to
(20:10):
make money off of New York, but instead to bring
a championship there. It checks a lot of boxes, and
it brings a lot of assets that aren't necessary necessarily monetary,
but can can easily translate into monetary revenue. So look,
(20:30):
I don't want to take any thing away from the
goodwill gesture or the gesture or the idea that that
Jalen Brunson is doing what needs to be done to
build a great team and being and having the awareness
that for him to become a champion, he's going to
need a great team. It's not like he's Lebron James
or Michael Jordan or some individually spectacular physical freak of
(20:53):
a player. But that awareness is what made Jalen Brunson
who he is, and and I can do nothing but
applaut it Rick.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
You know, obviously Team USA played its second game today
in Abudakah. Well I was gonna ask you, I you know,
obviously didn't get a chance to watch this one as closely,
but the first game it felt like, hey, we got
the older guys in the starting lineup, it's feel good,
first time Lebron and Steph are playing together, all that,
but the team really kind of took off and really
separated themselves in that game when Anthony Edwards and Jason
(21:25):
Tatum came off the bed, which just curious if you've
heard anything about dynamics on that team, and that's not
necessarily a negative thing, but just the dynamics with Lebron
and Steph are still the biggest brands, if you will,
in the NBA, but it's probably Anthony Edwards and Jason Tatum,
who are the players you know, at their peak of
the powers right now.
Speaker 8 (21:46):
Yeah, there's no question that this feels like a farewell
tour and a gesture to Steph and Lebron in terms
of where they are in their careers and having them
as starters. And yeah, they're still the headliners when it
comes to this team. But uh, this is the concern
that I have in terms of Team USA making good
(22:09):
on its uh being the prohibitive favorite to to win
the Gold, which is, uh, there's a lot of old
players on this team, and and Lebron and and Steph
in particular today, uh did not look good at all.
Uh So Uh, and it's not just Jason and Jason
and and and Anthony Edwards. I I Anthony Edwards still
(22:32):
is a phenomenal talent who doesn't really know what he's doing.
He's doing out there, which is amazing that he gets
done when he gets done when he's but but you're
asking him to orchestrate or be you look kind of
the floor general of your team. It's that's he's not
he's not ready for that yet. And that's where I
was all for starting Lebron in particular, because I thought,
(22:55):
you know, this team's a little short on playmakers. It's
it's Lebron, who is without question a great passer and playmaker,
and and Tyrese Haliburton and after that those guys who
can pass, but they're not they're not guys who are
are uniquely talented in creating shots for everybody, and you
(23:16):
need that orchestration when you're putting together a team on
such short notice, and it has such such a wealth
of talent, all of guys, all all these guys that
used to having the ball in their hands. So what
you really need is that one guy who says, Okay,
I'm going to get it. You're going to get the ball.
I'm going to get the ball to you, and I'm
going to get the ball to you in the places
that you want and and where you're comfortable and when
(23:37):
you're hot, and and we're gonna I'm gonna. I'm gonna
make sure everybody's getting theirs. And the way Lebron looked today,
I don't it concerns me. He it just he couldn't
get anything done and other than he was shooting three
each and that's not the ideal role that I want
for him. They have plenty of shooters on this team,
(23:58):
so that that is my That is my concern about
this team is if they play a team that's going
to play with pace, and even though guys aren't playing
heavy minutes, uh, there's times where the game is going
to be really fast and you got to you got
to react and rotate quickly, and the lack of familiarity
and everything else that can put a Team USA at
(24:20):
a disadvantage. The talent is like they won today's game
just because the individual talent is crazy. But as far
as how the two teams played, Australia actually played a
more appealing team like game. And if you go to
Spain or France and those teams with their talent and
(24:43):
they're playing that type of game, that's where I think
we're going to be challenged.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Rick Buker joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. He's
here in Torres. I'm Dan Byer in for Doug Gottlieb.
Are we making too much of a deal? And al
Jason Tatum responding to the absence of Jalen Brown on
Team USA because it wasn't a a glowing endorsement of
why Brown should be on the team. I mean even
mentioned that, yeah, there are a lot of guys that
could be on the team. Are we reading too much
(25:08):
into that or is there is there still something there
between the two players in Boston.
Speaker 8 (25:12):
I am not I'm not going to read without knowing
per se, Like I think the most dangerous thing and
I've been guilty of it myself, as any time we
put something out on social media, or we only get
a snippet of what somebody has said, or even when
they answer and sold to a question, a lot of
times it can be it can it can be affected
(25:33):
by how the question is asked or what question is asked.
So I'm I'm not here to suggest that, yeah, you
know what, in spite of winning a championship, it's time
to break up Dateum and Brown. Again, I'm not going
to go there, but I do think that there is
like everybody feels that that that Jalen Brown got snubbed,
(25:54):
and it's he didn't get snubbed. I mean, if there
was a time where there was a complaint, it would
have in that he wasn't part of the original selection
of players, and he wasn't. But at this point, when
you're when you're adding a piece, then Derek White just
makes a whole lot more sense because he's a complimentary player.
(26:15):
And I also look at them, how this team's composed,
and what was Jalen Brown, I mean, why was he
Finals MVP? Why was he why was he considered arguably
their best player in the playoffs? Is because he's kind
of their go to guy. Yes, he played some great defense,
but it was really that he made big shots. Well,
(26:37):
you got Steph Curry, you got Anthony Edwards, you got
Kevin Durant, you got Joe l Embiid in certain situations
like you got to have so many guys that are
going to fill that role ahead of him. Is Jalen
Brown gonna be happy as a Finals MVP and a
reigning champion if he's not getting those shots or if
he's asked just to play defense. I think that that
(27:00):
was the bigger concern. It's what I was just talking
about previously, Like we can no longer pick our teams
based on a glorified All Star team. The pieces have
to work together, the pieces, and I'll be I'll be
interested to see, like finding our way to getting these
pieces to work together. But for what Jalen Brown is
(27:25):
is I look at him as an NBA player, and
I look at Derek White as a basketball player. I
saw both of these guys back in twenty nineteen with
the national team in the World Cup, and the international
game is just different. And I think that Derek White
and his ability to play any role you need him
(27:47):
to play is actually more at advantageous than Jalen Brown
needing to be sort of the centerpiece in order for
him to be at his best.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
I'll also just said, this is his teammate in Boston,
was his replacement.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
That's what I was going to say, like that, if
you go too hard in Jalen Brown's favor, it's gonna
look at it like a yeah, yeah.
Speaker 9 (28:10):
And here's the truth.
Speaker 8 (28:11):
Like I remember having this conversation in the midst of
the playoffs. In the finals, it was like Derek White
was in the mix of MVP conversation even and I
believe even in the Eastern Conference finals, like there were
times where Derek White looked like their best or most
impactful players. So it's not as if like it's not
(28:34):
as if they picked the scrub. It's not as if
they picked somebody who's never performed with the national team
before or or wasn't getting kudos. It really is, I
would say in in in one way, it's almost a compliment.
It's like, Jalen you're almost a little too good for
the way this team is composed. We can't use you
the way you would be best used. And then the
(28:58):
other part is simply, this isn't about who the best
players are, It's about the best fit. How do we
get the twelve players who fit the best either as
opposed to the twelve players who are simply.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
The best rick last one for me obviously, Summer League underway.
Know that you know a lot of players are already
being pulled, But what is the Is there any early
buzz out of Vegas?
Speaker 2 (29:24):
And if so, what what is it?
Speaker 4 (29:26):
Well?
Speaker 8 (29:26):
I think probably Reed Shepherd being the like the most
impressive player that anybody has seen, and questions about what
Atlanta was doing because they're they're number one pick. I
believe it's I hope I'm pronouncing this correct.
Speaker 9 (29:44):
Resache, Yes, good work.
Speaker 8 (29:47):
Is is hasn't shown a whole lot, And this is
what comes with being the number one pick. Summer League
in the big picture doesn't really mean a whole lot.
But when you're the number one pick, you come in
and people expect you to be arguably the best player,
even if that's not why you were picked, And that
(30:12):
pressure and that expectation is only going to ratchet up
as we go forward. It goes without saying like people
are going to compare statistics and they're going to compare,
like who's doing what, and it doesn't matter what teams
they're with or the role and all of that has
an effect on their numbers. That's how people view it,
and the players hear it and they feel that pressure.
Speaker 9 (30:34):
And so.
Speaker 8 (30:37):
No one expected that this was going to be a
craft a great draft, or that we're going to get
a lot of franchise players or maybe any franchise players
out of it, and it's living up to that billing
at this point. But the kid plowed and with Golden
State has demonstrated that he might be able to contribute.
(30:57):
Shepherd to me has been without question, the most impressive
impressive player to this point. And then we have the whole.
We have the whole Bronnie James saga, which is just
I don't know about you guys, it's tough for me
to watch. It's tough for me to watch a kid
and hear all of the talk of like trying to
(31:21):
pump him up, like hey, you look really athletic on
that play, and it's and it's like, what are we
what are we doing here? It the one place where
it didn't matter who you knew, or what your name was,
or what school you went to, or where you came from,
or what your nationality was.
Speaker 9 (31:40):
It was you got on the floor.
Speaker 8 (31:43):
If you could play, you got on the floor, if
you could contribute in some way, or where they saw something,
A team saw something in new that they said, this
guy can give us this.
Speaker 9 (31:55):
And I have yet to see that.
Speaker 8 (31:59):
From Bronnie James. I don't know what he gives. You
all to talk about what a great defensive player he's
going to be, I'm seeing him getting torched on a
regular basis and knowing, not always knowing where he's supposed
to be, not always playing with energy, and for most
second round picks, fifty fifth picks, you could never ever, ever,
(32:20):
ever ever afford any of that and expect to still
be to still be playing. I think of Fred van Vliet,
undrafted four years at Wichita State, built himself into a player.
He got invited to the Toronto Raptors summer League team
and he was only guaranteed three games, three games after
(32:43):
the four year career he had, and he ended up
playing well enough that they gave him five games. And
then they invited him to camp and they had six
undrafted free agents in camp for one spot, and he
earned that spot, and he still spent half the year
in the G League and he won a G League championship,
and then he came back and he was still a
(33:05):
role player. This is another year into his NBA career.
Speaker 9 (33:09):
That's and he's six, He's he's Bronnie James. And every
step of the way he had to earn just to
get He had to spend essentially four years to get where.
Speaker 8 (33:24):
Bronnie James got immediately or in one and without having
done half or or a tenth of what bred Benslee did.
And that's where I just look at it and I go,
this just this feels it just feels wrong. It violates
something that I always felt was for all the politics,
(33:45):
for all the things that happened in the NBA, that
that jaundice you when it comes to the game and
the purity of the game. The purity of the game
always was, man, you're not on the floor unless you
can play and.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Were this is not that Well. We always bring Rick
Buker on because he does bring it every day every
time he comes on. Rick, we appreciate it. We know
it's come down now a little downtime in the NBA
when summer league goes away rest up, but the Olympics
will carry us for the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 8 (34:15):
Dan, I'm sitting in a gym right now with my
daughter to my right. I'm her designated rebounder. We're getting
the work in, all right.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
I love it.
Speaker 9 (34:22):
It is it is.
Speaker 8 (34:23):
It is not downtime for the kid. I'm probably more
sore now during the off season than i am during
the regular season.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
There is no off seasons. That's a Belichick. Appreciate it, man.
We'll talk to you later.
Speaker 4 (34:34):

We're gonna bring a different version of the usual press,
and we bring it to you right now here on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. The press. So usually I'd be
(35:54):
at the news desk and Doug is in this chair,
and I would throw headlines or stories at him and
we'd react to them. By it's the home run Derby tonight,
and it got my mind thinking and Jason Stewart's our
executive producer, Papa Bear. Royn mcmahin is here with us,
is our technical producer Aaron. You're hanging out home run Derby.
I've been to a couple. After a while, it gets
(36:15):
a little old. A week or two ago, I said,
right here on the network, I think you got to
figure out a way to do it. After you've seen
eighty home runs from a player, you don't need to
see another eighty more from someone else. It's just a
lot of home runs and at some point you gotta
make things more interesting. Well, how about if we make
the night more interesting? You ready for this one? Sure,
I'm curious. Fastest pitch, all right, just get just get
(36:39):
your five best pitchers who throw heat, just like you
would at a fair grounds or in a concourse of
a Major League baseball park, and have the speed gun,
and whoever throws the fastest fastball wins. You throw it
at one, one, one oh two. When that number pops up,
you're gonna get things buzzing. One of my recommendations to
(37:00):
spice up home run Derby night in Major League Baseball.
I thought of that.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
I worried would teams like, oh, they'd all hate it, Yes,
but it's okay.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
If we have guys not playing in the home run
derby or competing in the home run derby because they're
worried about their swings, then we've already lost the point
of it. Sure, Like, just have some guy throw some heat.
Maybe you need some armwork anyway.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
And it could be like a macmacle like the slam
Duck contest. It's like, yeah, we'd love to see lebron
or John Morant, but this mac McClung guy is still
pretty entertaining, you know, So it could be it wouldn't
always have to be the most high profile guys.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
Yeah, I think that that could be an option. Jason,
you have any ideas, Aaron, any ideas to spice up
I got a couple of more.
Speaker 5 (37:40):
I think the most exciting thing to watch in baseball
is a triple, no matter who's hit in it. And
you could like pump this up as the fastest man
in baseball, have team submit their fastest guys and you
time them from home to third, and that that probably
is not going to be a not gonna get like
(38:00):
the the extreme reaction that yours would get throwing your
arm off. I think that this would be just in
the normal course of somebody's working out running their fastest
around the base paths. But I would like to see that.
I'd pay to see it.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
Would a slide be required at third? I think so?
Speaker 5 (38:18):
I think so. And then there's there's that old if
you played enough baseball, there's that old like argument, if
you dive head first, does it pick up a step
or does it a step? And uh ye what people
would do?
Speaker 2 (38:29):
I'm game for that, you know what?
Speaker 3 (38:31):
That was Actually my idea, well not my idea, like
I like you stole it, but like that was what
I was thinking. But I like the idea of it
being a triple because I was trying to quantify. How
do you determine is it home to first? Is it
home to say? I like home to third because you
kind of pick up speed along the way.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
How about fastest double play? Combo? Who in Major League Baseball?
Who can turn the double play the quickest? So I
mean everything is everything is there, the the field, the toss,
the throw, all of it, and you can cheer you
want to you know, however, you want to do it
short to second second, you know, to short however you
want to do it third. I well, third would take
(39:07):
a little bit longer, but hey, like there's different ways
that that you can do it.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
I was thinking outfield relay, could you do something like that?
Did you say like someone got hurt once, like back
in the day.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
They did it one year in the nineties and I
think Tony Fernandez threw his arm out or something.
Speaker 2 (39:21):
Oh scratch that one off the back, one and done.
You and I are in for Commune and Rich tomorrow.
Doug will be back tomorrow and he can weigh in
on all that and so much more. Enjoy it. Doug
