(00:52):
right after the show. Type in Doug Gottlieb or you
can download the podcast at any time, but we have
that podcast only our anyway. I want to start with
something that I actually really relate to in my current position.
And by position, I don't mean seated in my office. No,
(01:15):
that's not it. My current position is a head basketball
coach of a Division one men's team, and we have
what do we have currently on our roster? And we
got a lot of dudes. I think it's sixteen dudes,
and we're gonna end up with eighteen dudes. You can
have thirteen scholarships, you can have other non scholarships. We
(01:37):
come walk ons, non scholarship players. And I want to
relate it to something that is being said about USA
basketball that is both right and wrong at the same time.
So if you've watched it all in any of these games,
and by games, I mean exhibition games, you would know
(02:01):
that Joel Embiid looks like he hasn't played basketball maybe
ever in his life. Right. He's just it just does
not look like he's sharp, does not look like he's
in shape, does not look locked in with the rest
of the team. For a guy who's been an NBA
(02:21):
MVP and called by yours truly to be the most
talented big man the game has ever seen, he's looked
anything but so far. But I know this from coaching
in a similar and dissimilar tournament, and I know that
(02:42):
from preparing for an upcoming season. It's that everything you
see now looks like it's going to be international basketball
in the Olympics, smells, feels, The names on the jerseys
the way in which it's officiated. The basketball is the same.
It is not the same. And there have been many people,
(03:07):
many people who have said on social media whatever, and
on media and right here on Fox Sports Radio that
Anthony Davis is better with the starting group, should be
playing at center. He should be the starting center. He's
the guy, he moves better, he's in better shape, he
spaces out the floor bearer, YadA, YadA, YadA. Anthony Davis
(03:31):
should be the starting center with USA basketball. And based
upon how they've played, and I haven't seen practice, but
I'm guessing you're probably right. But this isn't about beaten
Serbia yesterday. It's not about beating Australia previously. It's not
about any of that. Not about beating Canada previous to that. Well,
they beat they could show up hungover, everyone plays left handed,
(03:55):
and they would beat Sudan. But to win a gold medal.
If you've watched when USA basketball has struggled, Hey, what
international competition and international rules allow is a much more
traditional center. You can play old school zone defense and
(04:17):
oftentimes we have big guys that just get worn out.
I mean, it's the whole reason, the whole reason that
we push for Joel Embiid to naturalize, so we have
a legit, legit NBA center who's fantastic when he's in shape,
and though you may not need him now, and though
(04:40):
he may not look like he belongs now, he will.
And Anthony Davis or Bam out of Bayo even go
back and look at the last Olympics, like bam out
of Bayo did not have a great Olympics. And one
of the things he struggled with is kind of old
school big old big men who lean into you. Because
the skill set of takes to play NBA basketball. You
(05:02):
got to play out on the pruiter. You gotta be
able to block shots. But coming from outside the lane,
your teams are playing five out, you're playing in the drop,
You're doing all these things. Whereas it's a different skill
set required to play in the Olympics. It's a it
looks the same, it feels the same, it sends the same,
(05:24):
but it's not the same. I mean, look, it's the
same reason, at least on a micro level, on somebody
that you don't want Jalen Brown, and you you do want,
you know, a Derek White, because you need guys that
can shoot that are bigger and can guard bigger guards,
and that can space and don't need the basketball. You
(05:46):
need big guys who can score and defend at the
block like it was nineteen ninety two, and it's pat ewing.
We weren't trying to wear you out down there. That's
the reality to it. So you're right if you say
that right now, by your own eyes, Anthony Davis is
(06:06):
is playing better. It looks like he's in better shape.
You're right, But you're wrong if you think that Steve
Kerr and the brain trust of USA basketball is making
a mistake by continuing to throw Joel Embiid out there.
They're not playing for this week, they're not playing for
(06:27):
next week. They're playing for three or three weeks from
now or so when they're playing for Olympic gold medal,
and they have to have a big guy who can
score at the block and stop somebody at the block.
And that is not named Anthony Davis. He does not
want to play center. That is not named Bam out
of Bayo who he's just not big and thick enough.
And they cannot score at the low block. And it's
(06:47):
one of those things that you gotta understand you gotta
take my word for it that international basketball is different
and that you have to believe in at some point,
joelan BID's gonna win your game. Joel Ebid is going
to win you a game. And I know this because again,
I've coached an international competition. I've had these exact same
(07:09):
conversations with a basketball staff. It's different, but it's same,
and it's what it takes you to win some games
before you play in that tournament, because when you get there,
USA Basketball gets no calls. We're not used to playing
that style of officiating. Were everybody's biggest game. And oh yeah,
by the way, the one thing that they do that
(07:29):
we cannot do is they we just don't teach low
post play anymore because of the way it's officiating in
the NBA, the way it's officiating college, and we want
our big guys to be screeners rollers throw it to
the rim. That doesn't That's not how it's played international basketball.
So you can be right about how Anthony Davis looks
in comparison to Joel Embiid. You can be critical of
(07:51):
Joe Embiid. What you can't do is, I don't believe
you can use this make this critique and blow it
up to meaning something bigger in terms of his NBA career.
It's a different sport, a different style. Here's Colin Cowher
earlier today on Joel Embiid.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
My eyes did not tell me that Westbrook was an
MVP and Carmelo was an absolutely dominant player, or Derrick
Rose was going to run the league, And my eyes
are telling me the same for years with Joel Embiid.
I'm not denying he's got a Shack feel to him,
but Shaq won in the playoffs. Shack was dominant when
(08:29):
it mannered. I'm watching this Olympics stuff, and Beid gets
in the way of the offense. Anthony Davis doesn't.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Hell.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Anthony Davis took two shots yesterday and was the second
most dominating player in the game to Steph Curry. He
is literally jumps off the television set. And here's the
thing I like about AD and we've seen this for
years in Los Angeles. He can be a star and
dominated game, but he's also an incredibly complementary player. He
elevates Lebron. Lebron doesn't have to worry about defending the rim.
(08:57):
He can be a complimentary player on this Olympic team,
or he can dominate moments. With Embiid, there is no
complimentary to his game. He forces you to play his style,
and so does Steph Curry. But I get four titles,
and so did Lebron, But I got eight straight finals.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
With Embiid.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
He forces you to play his game, but I don't
get the payoff at the end of the season. He
gets in the way of the Olympic offense. And I
find sometimes watching Philadelphia. Yes, he's productive, so was Zach Levine,
and the Bulls can't give him away. If you're talking
about the greatest bigs of all time, Russell titles, Kareem titles,
(09:39):
Shack titles, a Geame titles. Embiid can't win a second
round playoff series in the weaker conference.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Well, a couple of lots to unpacked there. Again, Colin
is conflating what he's seeing in exhibition games with Team
USA to what's happened what happened with the Philadelphia seventy
six ers. It's a different sport, it's a different composition,
And frankly, my guess would be when Joel Embiid lost
(10:09):
in the playoffs and he had a bit of an
e issue. It feels like he didn't touch basketball for
a month or two, So what it feels like. And
by the way, Shaq would be like that. And just
so we're aware, if we remember, Okay, Shaquille O'Neill was
not on the Dream Team. He was on the second
and then the third like dream team whatever. That was
an abject disaster. He was actually an awful international player.
(10:34):
Go back and look, it was not good. And yeah,
Shaq won in the playoffs. He won when he had
Kobe Bryant. Kobe carried them and then oftentimes in the
finals Shaq would have a massive mismatch. But I'm not
trying to dimin a shack. He was dominating. But he's
different than Joel Embiid. Different And if the East is
a weaker conference, to why the Celtics just win going away?
(10:55):
Granted they didn't play the top team in the West,
but how good was the actual West at the top.
But the bigger point is now, he's not wrong that
the ball everything flows better with Anthony Davis. He's not
wrong that Embiid feels a little clunky right now. Not wrong,
but you have to have a vision of what it's
going to look like when they get to the semi
(11:17):
finals and the gold medal game, and anyone who's watched
the Olympics and USA Basketball, they've done this things through
the embarrassment of the World Cup to the last Olympics
when they survive. Because Kevin Durant and I guarantee what
they're thinking right now is we got to have a legit,
big dude. We got to have Joel Embiid in shape,
(11:38):
and sitting him over there because Anthony Davis is playing
better now doesn't help us get him in game shape
for two three weeks from now. And we have the
same conversations in college basketball. What it looks like now
in the summer when we let him play is not
what it's going to look like when we get to
December eleventh and I play our rival UW Milwaukee in
(11:58):
our home arena. That's the challenge of coaching is understanding
what's ahead of you and that oftentimes, either in practice
or exhibition games, it's not going to look the same
once you get to the real heart of competition. People
saying that Joel Embiid should be pulled from Star Lamp
(12:20):
should barely be played. He looks like crap or whatever
aren't seeing the bigger picture. I think Steve Kurr and
Grant Hill are.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
App Snut Gottleeb Show. It's Fox Sports Radio. This was
an unplanned part of the show. But I do have
a question for you guys, just a little argument I've
had in the last five minutes. I think the sport
(12:56):
is one of the great inventions of our lifetime. But
I have Jordan McCabe, who's one of my assistant coaches,
just a legend here in Wisconsin, says one of the
dumbest inventions ever? Who uses a spork? And he did
point out and he's right. Have you noticed no one's
ever made a metal spork. It's always a temporary sport
(13:19):
that you get for a picnicker outside. Jase do where
are you on the spork?
Speaker 5 (13:23):
I agree with his opinion. I think a spork is
not a spoon or a fork. People try to point
out that it's both, it's neither. It's not efficient at
either task. The tool is was created by capitalists, so
that they can make something that is widely sold consumed,
(13:45):
but is a cheaper version of both things that they're
trying to imitate.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Well, it combines two things, so you don't have to
do a fork.
Speaker 5 (13:53):
No, it's neither a form or a spoon, which is
why they call it a sport.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Okay, your opinion has been heard. I validate your opinion
as your own. I disagree with it. I was saying,
where are you on the fork of the spork, quality,
invention or waste of time?
Speaker 6 (14:11):
I will say that the spork has a has a
presence in the camping community where you're trying to reduce
the amount of items that you're packing on your on
your back. So you will you will buy a metal
spork at RII or some kind of camping store, and
it comes in pretty handy in normal life just at home.
I never use a spork, but I think it has
(14:33):
a place for for use out there.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
All right, let's let's uh what will get monster's opinion
in a moment?
Speaker 7 (14:40):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Sorry, Nick cope? Nick? Nick, would you like to would
you like to give your opinion on spork?
Speaker 8 (14:46):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Useful or useless?
Speaker 3 (14:48):
I don't think I've thought about a spork since I
was in a cafeteria that that's where they live for me.
But they're fine. I'm not going to seek one out though,
So you're a new towards them. I'm pretty neutral. If
I had to use it, fine, but I'm not going
to seek it out either.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Okay, we'll get to Mark Mendena. Momentarily I did so.
Bronnie James had far and away's best game of Summer League.
My guess is just a guess that Bronnie will be
held out upcoming in summer league games. Possibility. It's one
of the things they were kind of and look, you
give credit where it's due. Okay, to miss was his
first fifteen or sixteen three point shots. He ended up
(15:28):
two of five from three last night. But you're not
getting anywhere in sports and in life without any without confidence.
And my biggest concern for him in his future growth
is how do you maintain your confidence when you haven't
(15:49):
really produced in a year and a half and then
you get out on an NBA floor in Summer League
and you don't play well and everybody sees you don't
play well, and the weight of the world appears on
your shoulders, and then guys like Jalen Brown, who says
I don't think he's a pro to maintain yourself comment
(16:10):
it takes irrational self confidence in order to be successful. Irrational, okay,
But I'd also point out that the Hawks had like
their top five guys not dressed for the Summer League game,
and we have to just consume it as it is.
(16:33):
He made some shots, he played better. It's really good
to a kid to not completely lose confidence. And you
have to just keep showing up and keep showing up,
keep showing up, and keep it in the work. But
we also got a process like what are we doing
here right? Like we're going crazy about one summer League game.
I think on the plus side, the maintenance, the maintaining
(16:55):
of self confidence, even irrational self confidence, is a good thing.
The downside, the downside to it is again you have
to take the stats in totality and it's not great.
Stut Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. We'll hear from Nick
upcoming with game time next about fifteen minutes. In the meantime,
(17:16):
I think it's time we cue the music because when
we talk NBA, we bring in our Fox Sports Radio
NBA insider. Just picture him in Vegas walking through the win,
pointing to people doing the point and to people you
know the point a little wink. Well, head nod comes
(17:38):
into Thomas and Mac same head nod. How Summer League.
Speaker 7 (17:46):
Been, Uh, to my disappointment, no, no music down the wind,
and I did not win any money, but I did
enjoy Summer League and you know all that comes with it.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
What what was What was the honest buzz and people
talk about about Bronnie? What were people saying?
Speaker 7 (18:06):
Well, a lot of things. I think that there was
some empathy, some scrutiny, and some I guess spin. So
the empathy was just the idea that you know, he's
got this bulls eyees back as of all the dynamics
with his father, the scrutiny he can't make a shot,
what's he going to be is even prepare for the NBA?
And then some of the spin positive silver lining is
(18:28):
that it's early and that if nothing else, because of
his work, ethic resiliency, he can still carve himself out
to be a role player. But I think, you know,
the really the biggest buzz about Brownie was just his
own admission and acceptance that if he's going to get
playing time. Most of it's in the JU League, And
you know you've said it, I've said that's the most
(18:50):
practical route for him to get better because he's not
ready to play regular season rotation minutes. And the fact
that he's accepting it at least it's a good step
in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
No question about it. Again, And for people who think
I'm like some Bronni hater, my point is was has
always been. I thought he should have gone to do Caine,
where Lebron's high school teammate, one of his best friends
is the head coach, and get those minutes, and you
could always go to the pros. But they didn't decide that.
They decided to go to the G League. Again, I
still think it makes it really really hard because the
(19:23):
G League's a super high level of competition, really high
level competition, and I don't know how that plays out.
It puts puts their coaching staff in a predicament, and like,
how much do I play him? Anyway? Let let's get
to some other stuff. Okay, So am I wrong? Isn't
this the second time that the Jazz have traded for
Russell Westbrook so that he can be bought out? I
felt like that happened with the Jab and he was
(19:44):
a Laker.
Speaker 7 (19:45):
I was part of the Lakers Steel and then they
they negotiate a buyout and then the Clippers scooped him
up on the buyout market.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
So this is the plan for Denver in terms of
a backup point guard.
Speaker 7 (20:00):
Yes, and you know we've hit on this obviously. The
Nuggets in the last two years, they've lost their depth
outside their championship corps, you know, with the contagious call
Will Pope this past offseason, last summer with Bruce Sprown
and Ish Smith. So yes, this is, you know, one
of the steps they're trying to do to provide reinforcements.
I think given the context of them losing that bench depth,
(20:20):
the cap restrictions are under because of the second apron,
it's a good move, but there's a lot of questions
moving forward. I think short term Russ can be a
positive influence because of who he is. He can come
off the bed, provide a lot of athletics as of
energy scoring. But there's always a feeling that I have
had that he's had this mindset since gaining Tray with
(20:41):
the Lakers that he'll accept a role just to get
his foot in the door. But once he's there, he
wants to have the role that he once had when
he was the Russell Westbrook of his all star prime years.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
Correct.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
I mean, like, look, let's let's get to brass tacks.
He wasn't making a lot of money for the Clippers, right, No, okay,
So the fact that they got rid of him, traded him,
got something better in return for a buyout tells you
all you need to know, right, Like if you get
a former MVP and Russell Westbrook who's from LA and
you're like, yeah, we're good, that tells you that he
(21:14):
was not happy with the role with them, And like,
why would he think his rule's going to I mean,
obviously he would think his role is going to be
bigger eventually with with with the Nuggets. But the reality
is Jamal Murray's their guy and they need people that
can shoot around Nikola.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
Yokitch, Yeah, you're onto something. I mean the Clippers they
really supported Russell a lot more publicly than the Lakers
and turn to say had a better roster so they
could shield his mistakes. But watch what they do, not
what they say. Right, his playoff time diminished a lot
because of his fouls, poor shooting, poor decision making. So
as it pertains to the Nuggets, I want to be
(21:49):
surprised it plays out this way similar to the Clippers.
You've got the immediate positive results, you know, everyone pumping
them up that he's embracing in a role, and then
as time goes on you'll see that hell want a
bigger role now. I think in credit to Nuggets coach
Michael Malone, he has a good quality in him and
knowing how to build guys up so he can a
mold them and hold them accountable and be they have,
(22:13):
you know, good a good championship corps. But to your point,
you want Jamal Murray to have the ball in his
hands because he's a great point guard. That two man
game with Nikole Jokich is great, and Jamal is a
better shooter with Russ. If he has a ball in
the sands, he's going to be looking to do his
own and not do as much playmaking.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Stu Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of Mark Medina. He joins this year on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. Also, you can download the podcast version
as well. Hey Jewel Embiid hasn't looked great with USA basketball. Now.
I started the show by talking about they're playing the
long game. By long game, I mean three weeks from now,
(22:52):
when they're playing for a gold medal, they're going to
need a big guy. But what's the buzzmand with USA
basketball is why Joel has been so slow to come around?
Speaker 7 (23:02):
Yeah, well, any any buzz about, Oh, he's not fully healthy.
I don't buy. You know, he's maintained, he's fully healthy,
and I think it may be a rhythm thing. But
I think the other thing is he's trying to get
used to FEBA Basketball rules. Hes the early foul trouble.
But I think, you know, the early buzz with team
USA and the messaging that Steve Currs said is that
(23:23):
they're patient with him. They're actually penciling him as one
of the starters alongside Lebron James and Steph Curry and
assuming Kevin Durant's back along with him. And I think
part of it is to build him up the long
game that you mentioned. But I think in a weird way,
it's almost like how in baseball they use relief pitchers
as anyings eaters. I wouldn't be surprised. That's the thought
(23:44):
process with Joel as well, that he can have a
physical presence even if he's committing early fouls. That takes
theoretically some fouls away from Anthony Davis and bam Adebayo,
and then when they come in, they can you know,
dominate their opponents with their back at unit. But yeah,
I love there's a change.
Speaker 1 (24:02):
Yeah, I looks and I think that I think you
need a dominant center defensively, body type wise to play
FEBA basketball. I think and I think they're playing him
into shape. I think he's bad. He looks like who
hadn't touched when he was hurt in the playoffs. I'm
guessing he shout it down, didn't touch basketball for a
month or two. And that's that's what it looks like.
It'll come back. The question is does it come back?
(24:24):
Does it come back in time? Around the league? Obviously
there's a ton of talk, or at least it was
about the New York Knicks. Right you have the Nova
guys start led by Jalen Brunson taking what amounts to
one hundred million dollar pay cut over the lifetime of
his contract. Now it won't actually be one hundred million
(24:46):
dollars because there'll be another contract on the back end
of it and whatever. But the point is, what's the
buzz about the New York Knicks in the NBA circuit.
Speaker 7 (24:56):
Well, there's a few things. One as far as like
Eastern Conference land escape. I think Celtics are number one,
But I think the Knicks can make a case that, uh,
they have a better chance than Philadelphia because they have
that continuity back. You know, even though Paul George is
a great talent, Uh, there's always questions on his durability,
certainly questions on Joan and being durability. I think from
(25:18):
a you know, through the collective bargaining players Union lens,
there's some mixed feelings because the players Union's philosophy has
always been about, hey, we want players to feel empowered
about doing what they do best, you know, doing what
they feel is best for them as a basketball fit,
personal fit, et cetera. But I think that there's some
(25:39):
concerns with him taking that pay cut, even though it's
all understandable that best now sets a precedent for teams
to hide behind second apron concerns, which are very valid,
like they restrict teams. It's almost like a hard cap.
But now that's going to be the precedent moving forward,
as opposed to maybe the NBA making tweaks on that
second apron. So games aren't feeling like we're hard capped.
(26:02):
We're going to not spend as much even if we
want to. But from a team basketball standpoint, the knickser
are there. And I am of the belief that even
though people like to say, oh, Tom Thibodeau does the
whole playing guys too many minutes and guys get hurt,
I think that's in the past and hogwash. I believe
that this core is going to stay healthy. And now
(26:24):
the only question moving forward is do they decide to
try Julius Randall keep them. My sense as they keep them.
But you know they have some flexibility with them. That's
partly because of the contract runs and took.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
Yeah, I mean Lebron took a two million dollar pay cut,
Bronson took a hundred million dollars pay cut. I think
there's a little bit of difference. Speaking of the Lakers,
I know they've been trying to make a move. Is
there one out there for them to make before the season.
Speaker 7 (26:51):
I don't think there is. I mean, they have a
full roster, so if they were to make a trade,
they would have to you know, send more than more
players back on there and then what they're getting. But
the problem is they don't have much interest with some
of the rotation guys. I mean, I think Austin Reeves
has gotten some interest. I think, you know, the Lakers
have drawn some lines in the sand where he's not untouchable,
(27:14):
but it has to be the right deal. Yeah, And
I think when you're looking at the fact that it's
understandable they couldn't get guys like Kway Thompson's, Jamar Garros
and Neonis valentiering. It's not just because of questions about
the roster, but when it comes to signing trades, they
didn't have the right assets. But with having a full roster,
they even missed out on vet minimum guys like I
(27:34):
think Gary Trent Junior is the perfect example of that. Now,
in fairness, maybe Gary just goes to Milwaukee anyway because
they have fewer question marks he has experienced with Damian Lillard.
But you know, that's really one of the short term
consequences that the Lakers might be dealing with that they
weren't even able to get some of those guys around
up the roster from But from the Lakers perspective, you know,
(27:56):
there's two things in play. It might be you know,
wishful thinking, but there is optimism that gave Vincent, Jared
van Fair built will be a lot healthier this season,
so that those were key role players that you know,
kind of tied the bridge together with their stars and
the rest of the world guys. And two, they still
have those three draft picks that they can use in
(28:17):
the trade deadline next February, but that opens up a
whole set of other questions on how good or bad
will the Lakers be at that point and will there
be the right market at that point to make a
significant move.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Yeah, listen, I love Gay Vincent, but you know, like
they waited on him all year to get healthy, and
then you start to ask yourself, like, Okay, is Gabe
Vincent really the answer to take them from a team
that was you know, whereas everybody else feels like outside
the Clippers is getting better in the West, I think
it's going to be fascinating, fascinating to see Mark. I
(28:49):
appreciate your work. Can't wait to talk more with you
as we get ready for the Olympics. In the meantime,
you could still walk and kind of Sasha through any
place in LA. Make sure you do the point the
head nod.
Speaker 7 (29:04):
Adding Green Bay as well. I got appreciate you as well.
And let me be clear here, you're a realist, not
a hater.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
There you I appreciate that's uh. Mark Medina, Fox Sports Radio,
NBA Insidner, the funkiest of the cold. Medina's all right.
Coming up next to The Dog Gotliep Show live on
the Tiret dot Com Studios. What are the top ten
wide receivers in the National Football League?
Speaker 4 (29:27):
We'll draft them next. Be sure to catch the live
edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm
Eastern noon Pacific.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
The Gottleib Show, Fox Sports Radio. You can't hear Jimmy.
You just can't hear Jimmy. You can't hear him. The
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. No one knows where that's from? Huh,
Jay Stew do you know where that line's from?
Speaker 5 (29:58):
I don't. Is it a movie?
Speaker 6 (30:00):
Can you hear me? That's also? Isn't that also Jimmy
Hendrick song?
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Yeah? But that's not what it's from. Oh, I was Sam.
You're too young, Nick, Cope, you can't hear.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
Jimmy, I got nothing. If Sam's too young, then I'm
definitely too young.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
You're younger than Sam.
Speaker 5 (30:17):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Yeah, you have a veteran presence about you.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
I appreciate that. No, I'm glad I could fool you.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
No. Nick is very mature and Sam was not. That's
what Nick is.
Speaker 6 (30:28):
Also prematurely kind of gray, gray haired, but it looks good.
It's like a Steve.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
It does. And I'll tell you this, Nick, Here's this
is a real thing. I've said this, that going gray
early look can be a bummer. Obviously. First of all, chicks,
I'm told dig the the salt and pepper deal, even
even when there's more salt than pepper. But you go
gray early and you look older than you actually are,
and then once you actually get to being old, nobody knows.
(30:54):
It's like when you go balderly. Yep, you go balderly,
you go bald, and you're like twenties or thirties to
be like, dude, that's okay, But then you get to
be like fifty and you've been bald the whole time,
and like no one knows like you can take care
of your face and you don't, you know, smoke or
drink too much. Like you look young and you can
look like you're you still look like you're thirty. Same
thing with the with the salt and pepper thing.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
Yeah, Steve Martin Anderson Cooper couple comes to Rich Hoornberger.
Rich Hornberger, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
Solid works for him.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Also proves that Sam has a little bit of a crush
on Rich Hornburger. That's just like, let's get to a game.
Speaker 5 (31:25):
What was the payoff?
Speaker 4 (31:27):
What is game time? On the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
White man can't jump, White Man can't jump?
Speaker 5 (31:37):
Remember Big Mic had that big mic sent me a
tucks good work?
Speaker 1 (31:42):
Who does who does do we have a big can
we get the big mic imitations?
Speaker 5 (31:47):
Only buyer. Buyer's imitation is perfect and he's not here.
Speaker 1 (31:51):
Oil, Oil. I can't do it.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
I can't do it, all right, Doug, Today's game is
I was doing new hosts.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
Yest night, and I was wouldn't about doing new horts
and nobody knew who the Hanks was. What you meant,
no dame when he went that KB kip and the
course they went on the head coach dout Gartlina, and
then you know, ESPN forever you want a legend. Literally,
no one knew who the Holts was. In his girl
(32:17):
was like, I feel like the oldest man on earth.
Speaker 5 (32:19):
Well ten years ago today the Dark Knight came out.
And I don't do impressions at all older than that,
but I do. I do an impression of bane from
the Dark Knight.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
Can I hear it?
Speaker 7 (32:32):
Problem?
Speaker 5 (32:32):
Rewarding war? A man wouldn't throw a man on a port.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
I don't know about the hawking of a loogi after it.
But all right, what's the game today?
Speaker 6 (32:45):
Now he's got that furnace a grill on his face, so.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
Yes, yes, all right, today's game is raft. I feel
a draft, all right. So ESPN just had all these
surveys of NFL executive coaches and scouts looking at the
top ten players at each position group. They did receivers yesterday,
and I thought this would be the most interesting group
(33:08):
for us to come up with the top ten. Their
market's been rising and Doug our show intern Dean he's
in for the summer from CEU Boulder, heading into his
senior year. He's gonna help us draft and fill out
that top ten. What's up, Dean, how's it going?
Speaker 5 (33:23):
Happy to be.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Here, thanks, Dean.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
Alright, man, all.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
Right, so Iowa Sam first back from Iowa. He'll go first,
Doug your second, Dean will go in the middle, Jay
Stewing them myself will snake it around. So I was
Sam first pick to you.
Speaker 6 (33:38):
I'm actually gonna go. I'm not gonna go with statistically
one of the top five guys. I'm gonna go with
Nico Collins. I like his game a lot, catching balls
from and Nico Collins with the Texans man he's good. O. Yeah,
I'm taking him. He's catching passes from our guy. Who
am I thinking of? Former bucket?
Speaker 3 (33:57):
You're getting the rail immediately with this pick, c J.
Speaker 6 (34:01):
Stroud. He is catching balls from c J. Stroud buck
eye to a Wolverine. Nico Collins first pick.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
All right, Doug bord is yours?
Speaker 5 (34:10):
All right?
Speaker 1 (34:10):
There we go productive on and off the field.
Speaker 8 (34:15):
Dean, You're right, great value here at the third pick.
I'm gonna go with Justin Jefferson, best route runner in
the league.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
Great grade value with the three pick, that was obvious.
Speaker 5 (34:28):
I can't believe someone picked Nico Collins. He's eighth.
Speaker 6 (34:31):
He's eighth overall in receiving yards.
Speaker 5 (34:33):
Well, he's he's awesome.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
Good good for him. I like him. They liked them.
They liked him so much they went out and got
another Wider's here from the Buffalo Bills.
Speaker 6 (34:44):
He got some studs.
Speaker 5 (34:45):
The GMS and the Scouts put him as honorable mention.
He's not even in the top ten. That's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
Honorable is the honorable or honorable mention. We should all
pronounce our h is And anyway, go ahead.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
I'm gonna go with Ja March. Thank you at number four,
great value.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
All right, I'm gonna wrap it around here. This guy's
one of been one of my favorite receivers. I did
high school games for him back here in southern California
and he was instead.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
Then that's a that's actually not a humble brage that
you were doing high school games, but a little bit
of a humble brag. Anyway, go what you got.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
I'm monro Saint Brown is gonna be my pick here
with five yep, Modern Day they I did a game
Modern Day Bosco, two of the best programs in the country.
I mean, there were probably thirty plus future D one players. A.
Monroe was the best player on the field in that game, hands.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
Down, insight.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
So I'll take him five, and then coming back the
other way, I'll get my big body guy here. Give
me a J Brown of the Eagles.
Speaker 5 (35:44):
I like that. I like that. So you guys all
left me Cdee Lamb, which I can't pass up on Lamb.
Speaker 8 (35:52):
All right, my second pick, I'm going with old, reliable,
mister consistent DeVante Adams.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
I go Davantage, solid solid. Has he any wait against me?
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Right, it's back to you, Doug Yell, Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
Have any of these guys single handedly won a Super Bowl?
Speaker 4 (36:10):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (36:11):
That's right, Cooper Cooper Cup, did Cup?
Speaker 3 (36:16):
I think a big bounce back here upcoming for Copper Cup.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Cooper Cup.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
All right, Iowa Sam, who possesses Nico Collins. He's got
our last pick.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Wide receiving core.
Speaker 6 (36:29):
I'm taking a Pooka Nikouah. He's very resilient. You know
a place you're not.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Gonna tell me. I'm Pooka. He's awesome.
Speaker 6 (36:35):
He's a magnet, Pooka Nakula. He's a wet magnet, a
ball magnet.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Oh, I thought he says a blow magnet. I was like, man,
he go a dn up to see you boulder?
Speaker 3 (36:45):
All right, just real quick, couple of guys in the
Coaches Scouts Execs Top ten that we did not draft,
Mike Evans, Stefan Diggs, and Brandon Aiyuk. They were eight,
nine and ten respectively, not drafted by us.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
That's game time, game, This is game time on the
Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
Stut Gottlieb Show. You're on Fox Sports Trader. We live
at the tyreck dot Com studios. Is there. Here's my question.
Is there anything more Olympics than Olympic swimming? Well think
about that for a second. Okay, I'll help explain. There's
nothing more Olympics than Olympic swimming. That's next to Doug
Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio
