that tire buying should be. I try to do something
fun today and I am punished for it because I
get to the point where I hate everybody because some

(00:48):
guy what was the character's name in Jurassic Park who
tried to reset the computers. It was the guy who
played Newman who tried to reset and that's what happened
to everybody. But nonetheless, I am a brilliant, brilliant traveler,
and I found a way to get back to southern
California so I could surprise the guys on a Friday,

(01:08):
only to remember just how much stress and anxiety this
town breeds because I hate every single driver on the road.
And I'm telling you unequivocally, it had all been erased
in Green Bay. If you haven't been at Green Bay,
I know it's cold in winter. I got it, I understand.
But the roads are built for football games, not for

(01:30):
daily travel. So there's no traffic ever, ever, ever, ever,
And I honestly this is gonna be If you've lived
in southern California, you'll know this to be a fact.
I have encountered the first ever motorcycle driver that decided
to stay in the carpool lane, and not just you

(01:52):
don't even have to necessarily weave like some of those
psychos do, just get in the middle where you could
just go through traffic literally everything. But it's the whoever
plays Newman. What's that guy's name? Somebody Reese, what is it?

Speaker 2 (02:08):
In real life? It's Wayne Knight, Wayne Knight. His character's
name is something else will check.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
And you remember, do you remember remember when he was
trying to go and sell the DNA of the dinosaurs
and no one knew the code, and that's what happened.
So the entire world shut down, Like literally the entire
world shut down.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Dennis Nedrie is his character in Jurassic Park.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Thank you, Nick, And apparently it's like one company that
does like cybersecurity that hit a reset. It's like, ooh oops.
Imagine being that guy that pressed that button, is like, yeah,
we got this. Uh well, just pleasure this as refresh
Windows eighteen ninety three point zero. Anyway, good to be

(02:50):
with you. It's Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports
Radio Live in Los Angeles today at IRAQ dot com studios.
I get to see the smiling face of Jason Stewart,
Nick Cope, and of Iowa Sam other people I don't
even know who they are that apparently have invaded this
space since I've left. But it's fine, nonetheless, Okay, I

(03:11):
wanted to start today with the Yankees Believe or Not.
The Yankees Believe or Not. And it's one of those
things where you know, I've kind of taken on that
whole coach like, yeah, I'm a coach now, so I
take on the whole coaching thing, right and people, you know,
I tell guys all the time, like, well, we want
to be a leader. There's different leader stuff, right, different
leader stuff. Well, there's different Ace stuff. And if you

(03:35):
didn't know, the Yankees hit a bit of a rut
in the month of July, right, hit a bit of
a rut late in June and into July so much so,
and we talked about it that Brian Cashman's like, I'm
going on the road because you know that settles everything. Now,
they did take two of three from the Orioles, the
first place Orioles, the last series of the first half

(03:57):
of the season. But our can I call him our
guy because he was supposed to be an angel? Right, Remember,
everybody's like, Garrett Cole is going to be an angel
and he was like, nah, nope, no, nope. But Garrett
Cole who was He missed seventy five games. He wouldn't
have started all of them, but you do the math, right,

(04:18):
somewhere in the twenty five, you know, and the twenty
sort of variety. Anyway, he missed all those games due
to injury, slow to come back and since returning his
best start with his best velocity, his best stuff was
against the Orioles before the break. And what happens with baseball,

(04:38):
And I'm as guilty of it as anybody. I think
Jason is somebody who's the opposite. Jason takes every game
as some sort of sign as to whether his Dodgers
are going to succeed in the postseason or going to
fail miserably. Yet again, is that fair? Jason's had a
fair depiction?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Maybe not, Maybe it's an exaggeration, but I see what
you're saying, right, I put a lot of weight in
the week to week.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Most of us just go like it's baseball to work
itself out, Water finds this level. Dodgers, give me the playoffs.
Yankees going to be in the playoffs. It's fine, it's fine.
Whereas Jason and real hardcore fans are like, dude, what's
going on? Pitching injuries? We got to add somebody now now,
now can't have what we had last year, where we
kind of just sat in our hands and let it

(05:21):
be because we want to spend a bunch of money
on show. Hey, well, the Yankees are kind of in
a similar scenario, right. They clearly got to add some pieces,
but they were cruising along and then they hit a rut.
Now Garrett Cole's back, and so my point to it is,
it's we used to call it a cologne game in
the NBA, A Colonne game by you don't put on

(05:43):
Colone every day, you guys put on Colone every day.
Cologne every day, guys a lot. It's like, I get it.
You have Colone. You like my son's fifteen. When you're fifteen,
it's Colonne every day, okay, But most of us it's
once a week date night, you had dressed real nice,
maybe you got a meeting, maybe the night before you
ever had one of those days where you're like, you

(06:04):
come home from work like I stink? What did I
forget to yoder end? Is it this dry fit shirt?
What is it?

Speaker 4 (06:11):
Right?

Speaker 1 (06:11):
So then the next day you overcompensate your shower, you shave,
you wanna make sure you put on a little clone.
A cologne game is It's that special game. It's the
one where you get your neck cleaned up. Right, You're like, oh,
hold on, I gotta get my neck cleaned up before
I go out. Neck cleaned up Cologne. That's what the
Yankees have today, right. They're facing the Rays, a team

(06:33):
who has honestly dominated them over the past decade or so,
one of which Garrett Cole has not been good. Against
and you know, the principal, Brian Cashman, was on their
last trip, right, so it it felt like it was

(06:53):
getting serious and now's the time to kind of deliver
on it. The Yankees have been brutal. Garrett Cole pitches tonight.
True ace stuff is in this game, you do the
nuclear loose, You announce your presence with authority, don't you.
It's one of the things that and Jay, this is

(07:14):
where I will commiserate with people that say, you know Kershaw.
We used to when I was at one of the
other places, we would call him Clayton Manning, right, because
Clayton Kershaw was great in the regular season and not
particularly good, especially once he got beyond the sixth inning
in the postseason. Called Clayton Manning much like Peyton Manning,

(07:37):
who's one of the greatest, if not the greatest, regular
season quarterback of all time. But the thing that made
Clayton kershawer has made Clayton Kershaw an ace despite the
fact he's had some failings, a lot of failings in
the postseason, is you know what, every fifth day, when
the Dodgers really needed that, dude picked up the ball
and delivered. And I understand that postseason pitching is different,

(07:59):
and that to be one of the all time greats,
you gotta be better in the postseason than Clayton Kershaw was.
But the point of it is that Kershaw was a
machine in the regular season, a machine, and games like
today for the Yankees are the types of games that
made him the machine, that made him a legend, that
made him a first ballot Hall of Famer. I'm not

(08:22):
diminishing the importance of the playoffs, especially for pitchers, because
that's where they make themselves, you get legendary status. But
the fact is that Garrett Cole a guy who shunned
our Angels back when the Angels had some form of relevance,
and he went to the Yankees, and now he has
a good team that's floundering, and he's coming off his

(08:45):
best start of the entire season, and a lot of
them against the Rays who have dominated him and beaten
up on the Yankees, and the Yankees really needed. This
is a stuff. This is a stuff Stut Gottlieb Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. By the way, yeah, have

(09:07):
you guys, have you guys seen my new signee?

Speaker 2 (09:11):
I I did not play those sound effects live dog
that's a vicious vicious that's not a puppy, that's a
vicious guard dog. That's Snoopy in there.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
That's vicious guard This is Vince Lombardi or Vince LOMBARKI
very nice.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Ki.

Speaker 1 (09:30):

Welcome in you having a good dun. I'm in studio

(10:14):
with my boys, Nick Cope with the updates and all
the games. Jay stew Who Uh, that was an interesting
text you sent the other day about the comparison with
your ex girlfriend and Drake's baby Mama, I know you
hate this term. Did not have that in the Bengo card.

(10:35):
I looked at my phone. I was like, that was
left field coming up. And my guy, Iowa Sam, who's
got to be fired up at the WNBA Skills Competition.
Have you put down money on Caitlin Clark to win
the skills competition?

Speaker 2 (10:49):
No, she's not in it. She got left out again. Yeah,
she got left out of the Olympics and then now this.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
No, no, no, no, Hold on a second. You know it's
been reported that she turned down the event to do
the three point content. Okay, I'm hoping we could talk
about that with coach Dockets, who's on hold right now.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
That that's that's that's a producer's way of going, like
stop stalling and get to the guests, because the guest
is better than you. It's Doug Gotlib show here on
Fox Sports Trade. We talked about a lot of things.
Let's talk some hoop. My guy Dan Dockets. Of course,
he was a head coach in college at Bowling Green
and Indiana, longtime assistant have a player at Indiana as well,
and then a long time basketball analyst and has his

(11:28):
own show on OutKick called don't at me, don't at me.

Speaker 4 (11:33):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
Let let's start with Bronnie James. Now he's had back
to back solid games. What as from a guy who recruited,
a guy who analyzed, and now a guy who talks
about it for a living. What do you think of
Bronnie James the prospect?

Speaker 4 (11:48):
Thanks for having me on, Doug. You know more about
him than I do, but I would say this. You
know you you're the head coach. Now you're gonna have
to go evaluate. You're gonna have to figure out who
is good enough to win you championships, to win you
league titles, that kind of thing, And that's part of
being a coach. And I didn't see him in high school.

(12:09):
I certainly didn't watch him in the McDonald's game that
kind of thing. And when I watched him, it's pretty
simple to me. He's not an NBA player. He's probably
a very good Mac player, maybe maybe a you know,
player on a decent Power five team. But that's what
I've seen. A rooting for him. I want him to

(12:30):
do well. I kind of like him, I don't know him.
I kind of like your story, I think lebron James
said it. You know, well, the kid could have done
a lot of things, but he wants to bust it
being the public guy. But when I watched him, I
I just simply don't think he's an NBA. I think
he's gonna be. I think I don't know how you
feel about this, but I think this is all set
up for him to play on the court with his dad.

(12:51):
I can't see the Lakers drafting him, signing his dad
to a big deal, and you know, letting this thing
go with just a G League season long appeer. But
I just don't think he's an NBA player. I think,
you know, I you know, we had a couple of
guards on our teament Bowling Green when we were good.
One played in the NBA for nine years. He's not
as nearly as good as you know, Keith McLeod or

(13:14):
some others. But you know he's going to be in
the NBA. I don't think there's any question about that.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
I agree with you, general Sudden, I you know, I,
I just I think it's it's more than a little
selfish of Lebron. I get it. You know, you want
to do something really cool, never been done. You play
this long in the NBA. You want to play with
your kid, but man, he could have had a really
good college career and could have grown. And I don't
know if he still would have been true an NBA
player on his own, but I think he could have

(13:41):
had something special, especially you play for you know, your
dad's best one of your dad's best friends in Dukane, Like,
I just didn't understand the rust year other than to
play with his dad, which is obviously going to happen.
Let's get to USA basketball. What's your assessment of what
they put together?

Speaker 4 (14:00):
Well, I'd be surprised. Somebody's gonna play him close, probably,
but there's just too much there. And you know what
I like about it. I think there's differences. I think
there's guys that are trying to prove, Like when you
go back and there was a really good team with
Marberry and Iver sending those guys back in the day,
and they were still trying to prove themselves, you know,
as people, you know, and this is just adults. These

(14:22):
are adults. These are guys that are above nonsense on
the USA team. And that's kind of how I look
at it. I think there's always guys trying to prove themselves,
guys that are unsure, and then there's a level above
all of that, and that's what you got on this team.
And you know, I was watching them play against you
kids the other day, and I understand it's a friendly

(14:43):
whatever you want to call it. And they just said,
screw this, We're going to go win. And that's just
what I see. I don't think that, you know, look,
somebody will play them well, they will not lose a game.
In my opinion, their average margin of victory will be
in the twenties. I just think they got adults and
I think, you know, even I understand this conversation about
Jalen Brown and certainly credential wise Jalen Brown to be

(15:05):
an Olympic team, but they went and got an adult.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Said I've said that. It's like, listen, it's not that
Jalen Brown, stop bright, It's not that he you know,
he doesn't have any issues, but Jalen Brown's got a
lot of interests. And yeah, like, look, you know, does
he one does he want to be the twelfth guy?

Speaker 4 (15:25):
You know?

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Is he okay with being a twelfth guy? And can
he get along with people? And does he is he
just there because he wants to win a gold medal
or is he there because he wants to make a
political statement. And like people can look at this as
anti side, it's not. I don't think they want anybody
making a political statement. I just think they want guys
who want to go play basketball, win games and and
and make money off of the endorsement deals that follow.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
I agree. And and when I again, you know, guys
grow up and you know, Doug, you've seen this more
than I've seen it. I mean, guys get in the
league and you know, they go through maybe they become
stars early, and then they had a decision to make
I'm gonna keep working on my game. Am I going
to continue to progress through USA Basketball? And these are
all guys that have and you know, what are you

(16:07):
gonna do? You think you're gonna shake shake up Lebron
James or Kevin Durant or Steph Curry. And then you
had guys on the a little bit younger, maybe Halliburton,
but you know, Derek White comes in and man, I
think I don't know if we talked about this, but
when I went to the two games here in Indianapolis,
the Celtics first, the Pacers and I sat pretty close.
I was. I was just shocked at how smart Derek

(16:31):
White is. I was shocked at wasn't shocked at how
smart Horford was, or how good Tatum or Brown were,
you know, but Derek White was like Jesus, does he
make all the plays? And you know, you mentioned something
that I go back, this a long time ago, but
when the Olympic team used to be picked, and in
eighty four, long again, long time ago, Bob Knight had

(16:52):
all the guys Jordan and Ewing and they were all
in college. And I remember going to those trials and
I remember having a pretty good handle on who guy
was going to pick, simply because who was going to
be coachable and who wasn't going to be coachable, who
was going to fit certain roles and who wasn't. Uh,
And it's kind of the same thing here again. This
is just I don't know how you feel. I'll ask you,

(17:12):
do you think they're going to have a You think
they'll lose a game? Do you think they're I don't.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
I don't. I think they'll have a couple of close games.
I actually think I think I think they're playing the
long game with EMBIID too. I think in Beiad's gonna
be important because he's the only like kind of traditional center.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
You know.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
It's a lot more physical game. Oh yeah, and so
I actually I like that they're playing embid a Ton
even though he's not playing well, he's clearly it feels
like he hasn't touch a basketball since since he got
hurt in the playoffs. But uh yeah, I think they'll win,
but I definitely think they'll be challenged.

Speaker 4 (17:42):
Yeah, I think they'll be a couple of close games.
But I again, I you know, one thing that every
guy that you know, I've ever talked to you that's
played in the Olympics winner it's been as a swimmer,
track and field team, handball, They're like, man, you know,
you gotta be tough enough to overcome the pressure because
everybody talks about, well, it's great, I'm wearing Team USA

(18:04):
on my jersey. It's a lifetime dream. Well that is,
but there's also, you know, a lot of pressure when
things get tight. I just don't see any of these
guys or this particular group. Maybe one or two guys
having a bad night, but I just don't see this
this group faltering close game. Sure, there's a lot of
good players in this world and a lot of gotten

(18:25):
great MBA experience big time environments, but I just don't
see there being They'll be challenged once or twice, but
I'll be about it.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
Kaylen Clark obviously plays the Fever. Dan Dockets is our
guests here on the Doug Outlet Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Dan of course played Indiana, longtime radio host in Indiana
and in Indianapolis, and of course also has Don't at Me,
which is of course the streaming show you can watch
daily on OutKick. So what's changed with the Fever? Because

(18:53):
you know, she had a high turnover rate to start
the season. She's turned over less. But they're also winning
a lot more. What this team?

Speaker 4 (19:01):
You know, Doug, I went on Friday Night a week
ago and it was really interesting. They got up thirty.
Here's what changed for the good and here's what's not changed,
and it's bad. They get up thirty and you know,
Trotsy's not playing, Grinder gets hurt in the middle of
the game, and they go up and Kaitlyn Clark's best
player on the court. It's not close. I mean, she's

(19:23):
kind of like you. She looks for others first, but
then she can go get twenty, you know, and bang
in a bunch of three. So she's not like you.
No offense, No, we are who we are, but always
others first, and they get up and then and they're
playing great and everybody's together, and I mean, she's dropping
it off to Boston and others. And then here comes

(19:46):
I forget the team's name, the Arizona Mercury. Yeah, the Mercury.
And honest to god, Kayln Clark looked like a twenty
two year old young lady. She did not look like
a stud athlete. She's a sulking. She was bitching at
the ref, she was bitching at her coach, was bitching
at her teammates, and not in a good way. And
it was fascinating. It was kind of the reason I
like Caitlin Clark, because she got an edge, she got
an attitude. But we saw it. And my two buddies

(20:10):
in my book played in college and they were sitting
there behind the bench and my wife, whose coats were
all like man, we saw just greatness and now we've
seen crap. It was awesome. The greatness was the team
totally accepts that she is it you That was not
happening early. There was a little bit of a battle
Mitchell and Wheeler. These young point guards that have been

(20:32):
very good are good in the league. They're battling and everybody. Now,
I think you can feel a level of respect, you
can feel a level of Okay, she is it, but
I'm telling you, and it was fascinating as soon as
it went sound. I mean all of a sudden, literally
a thirty point lead became a four point lead. Man,
oh man. It was like five people on that court

(20:54):
and she couldn't get it together yet. It was just fascinating.
But the team knows how to play with her. They
respect her. There's no always showing who the person is,
who the guy is. But they got a long way
to go because you know, she's a rookie twenty years old,
twenty two years old, with all this heat on her
trying to lead, and when it goes bad, they're not great.
She's not great yet at bringing it all back.

Speaker 1 (21:17):
Can you believe she's on the Olympic team.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
I don't know the league well enough. I got two
thoughts that, yeah, the interest would be there, but I
also think you know, they just signed a two point
two billion dollar deal they're trying to grow the whole league.
If you have Caitlin Clark got there, the whole focus
is her, and maybe by the whole focus being on
her for the last year or so, maybe now I

(21:42):
don't know, maybe without her there the focus goes to
others and it lifts the league. I was asking Lynn Dunn,
the GM she's on my show today, that same thing,
and she kind of agreed with me. But you know,
you can't come out as the general manager of it
Indiana Fever and say, you know, Caitlin Clark and be
on the Olympic team. That's crazy. Yeah, I do. I

(22:02):
think it's a player. I'll tell you this, she's a
lot better in person than she is on TV. I
really believe she's a lot better. Like just the speed, quickness, uh,
being able to change direction shot looks a lot easier.
I think you mentioned this when she first came in
the league. She had a little bit of a was

(22:22):
it LaMelo Lorenzo ball.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
Kind of a thing, Yeah, Lonzo ball over the left
side of head.

Speaker 4 (22:28):
Yeah yeah, But when you're there in person, it's not
so dramatic. Weird is that sounds? And she just looked,
you know, she looked a lot better. Yeah, if she
was on the Olympic team would be great for everybody,
but probably for her. You know, she's been under a
hell of a lot of heat over the last one
year and a half. That probably good that she's not.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
Daniel the best man. Uh, look for having me. Look
forward to catch having person. Thanks for our guest.

Speaker 4 (22:52):
Thank you, my friend.

Speaker 5 (22:53):
Fox Sports Radio had the best sports talk lineup in
the nation yet. Catch all of our shows at Fox
sports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
It's the Gottlaby Show Fox Sports Radio. Do you guys
remember it was like a year ago when somebody close
to Ryan Pols his dad, right, and his dad wanted
to rep him, and his dad was like, you know,
I don't know, I don't want to go to Chicago.
You know, he might go to school back for school
for another year. And because he's from DC, he went
to I think he went to Gonzagau. He went to

(23:26):
it's actually called it's this is a weird one in
the Poloue Okay, in the state of Washington. It's called
Gonzega Gownzega. Let me let me hear it, Sammy. Here's Gwenziega,
gon Gonziga, Gownzega. You're allowed to say Gonzaga. You're not
allowed to say Gonzaga, Okay, But I believe in d

(23:50):
C and one it's one of the best private school
leagues in basketball, and I think in football in the
country it's Gonzaga. Weird, right, super weird. Same word, same country,
same language, different pronunciation regardless. Anyway, So he's from the
DC area, probably wanted to go play for whether the

(24:13):
Commanders now it still does not. I feel like the
Commanders are going to be like the Brewers and Brewers
in the National League and Astros in American League. It's
just it's gonna take me a while because I was
about to say the Skins. I just was anyway, So
you remember all the stuff they said, I mean, there

(24:37):
was a there was a bunch.

Speaker 3 (24:38):
Well, they were also saying that he's gonna he's going
to ask for ownership in the team.

Speaker 1 (24:43):
That drops ownership in the team, yes.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
And the agency that he's a part of is going
to get a piece of the team as well.

Speaker 4 (24:50):
Sure.

Speaker 1 (24:51):
Sure, And then when they're like no, they're like, well,
we're not going to take offset offset language in the
contract and we want everything up front, signing bonus one
hundred percent paid out.

Speaker 4 (25:07):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
Caleb Williams got creative and imaginative. This is from an
article in his effort to secure a special terms and
his rookie deal with the Bears. In the end, he
was like Spalding at Caddyshack. God, that that's too data
reference for Nick Copan for ioa, Sam, isn't it? Sam?
Do you get that? What did Spalding get?

Speaker 4 (25:30):
I want a hamburger, No a cheese, I want a
hot dog, I want a milkshake, I want the tables.

Speaker 1 (25:38):
Here nothing and like it, there you go. I didn't
get nothing. He got a fully guaranteed five year contracts okay,
But the point is he did try. He was like
a Spalding there, I want a ham, I want to guarantee,
I want ownership, and I want to play for the commanders.
No cheese on all that? What was Judge Snails? What snails?

(26:04):
What's his real name? Night head?

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Night right?

Speaker 1 (26:09):
Nick? Do you like that movie?

Speaker 4 (26:12):
Like?

Speaker 1 (26:12):
I can already tell. He just he looked at me
and he's like, not really, No, it's been a while
since I've seen a long time. I understand we've discussed
this earlier this week. If you're just joining us on
the doug out, they show Nick has this great salt
and pepper hair. So you walk in and you're like, dude,
you have no idea how old Nick is. Zero, he's

(26:35):
probably seventeen. He's not even of age. But as I said,
you have that salt and pepper look. First, chicks dig
it because it's dignified and like regal. Secondly, no one
will ever know how old you are. You'd be like
sixty and you have salt pepper hair. They're like, dude,
you look like you still look the same. Look at
you thirty. So training camps do they all start Monday?
I know the packer starts Monday. Again when you live

(26:56):
in Green Bay, like that's that's a big thing. And
I don't I don't think I have a bike. I
don't have a bike. I get spent like a lifelong dream.
I'm wouldn't you love to just go and have one
of the bikes and give your bike to packer and
have them ride it from the locker room to the
Don Hudson Center to the field there right across from
the bar, which is a restaurant. Like no, I think

(27:18):
I gotta buy a bike? Am I too old? Are
they supposed to be? Like like little huffies, little kids bikes?
They're probably supposed to be. I could California up, California up.
I could go get my Super seventy three and like
we could eat bike it there. I mean I could
do that with Jordan Love, right. I mean Jordan Love
is a California guy. I'm Grant Bakersfield sort of California.

Speaker 4 (27:40):
Right.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
Well, I'm thinking about that. Think about doing that. Playing
a hookie Monday. If you don't see me Monday, That's
what I'm doing. Like, where's Gottley? He bought a bike?
He bought a huffy. Do they still make huffies? I
think they do? Think they do? What about a Shwin?
I actually have a great story I'm gonna share with you. Okay,

(28:03):
this is a real thing. So as as Jay Stu
knows and Iowa Sam, you know some like I have
a great memory for factoids, for conversations for people, But
there are times in which I'm moving in shake and
I forget things. When I was U twelve years old,

(28:23):
Easter break Easter break back then was always Las Vegas
basketball tournament rode my bike to school. Dad picked me
up from school. Immediately go to Vegas a week from
that Monday. Okay, two mondays later, come back to school.
But I go into my garage to look for my bike.
I'm like, mom, somebody stole my bike. Turns out I

(28:50):
left it locked up at Lavite Elementary Once.

Speaker 4 (28:52):
That's me.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
They do still make couffies. Okay. Good. Mark Dominic joinsus
here on the doug Otlab Show on Fox Sport Trade.
Of course, Mark most famously, I guess most famously he
joins us on the show. But next to that, he
was a gentle manager of the Tampay Buccaneers twenty years
in NFL free office, free agent, I mean NFL offices,
from scouting all the way up. Obviously to be in
the big boss. So Caleb Williams said, I might go

(29:16):
back to school for a year. Didn't want to play
for the Bears. Wanted an ownership stake. You know, he
wanted this, he wanted he didn't want you know, he
wanted some special terms in his contract. You know, he
basically got nothing but a standard rookie deal, granted number
one picks plenty of money, and they did load up
that offense. My question is does any of this does

(29:40):
any negative feelings after the contractor sign last.

Speaker 6 (29:45):
You know, Doug, thanks for having me on. And you know,
this is something everybody knew going into the process with
Caleb Williams. Agents were aware of this as Caleb Williams
was deciding who the agent was going to be, and
a lot of agents started to pass, even th he's
been one pick. The father and Caleb were looking for
things that were just never going to happen, especially for

(30:06):
a rookie. And so that was one of the things
that was a little bit of a flag for some
teams hearing that that was going to be a deal.
But here's the thing. The Bears aren't work going to buckle.
No club was going to buckle. And you kind of
knew that. And I think that's why the Bears went
head and obviously took Caleb Williams that they weren't going
to make this drastic change the context because you've realized
the ramifications going forward, what that could do or what

(30:28):
that could mean in terms of futuristic picks, especially guys
and the veterans of why we have the CBA, how
the veterans didn't like how much the rookies were making
before they had stepped on the field in terms of
like bad blood or anything like that. No, it should
not be at all. Rine Pole should still you know,
he made the pick. If this is his quarterback, this
is his identity. I don't think that the negotiations should

(30:50):
have changed anything. And thankfully if they got it done
and he's in camp and they'll be good to go.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Have you watched Hard Knocks off season within your giants?

Speaker 6 (31:01):
I've watched parts of it, Doug, I haven't seen it all,
but I've loved everything I've watched.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
What what have you what? What specifically have you liked
the most?

Speaker 6 (31:11):
I thought it was interesting with Sake. I mean, I
think that was probably the more public part, was the
Sake one Barkley, But I thought, you know, even they're
pick for Neighbors in terms of you know, when Dave
all came in and talked about howix you just got
done watching the Neighbors and what he thought of him
as a player, and you know, just the process that
a lot of people don't know. And I think the
unique thing about this Hard Knocks is it makes you

(31:31):
know Joe Chane a person that's that's trying to walk
through the decisions for a story franchise and the thing
for the fan. You're like, okay, so it's not just
some dummy sitting in a room to do a dart
and said let's try and see what happened. There was
more of like, you know, you're trying to build a consensus,
You're trying to understand whatever he's thinking. You're trying to
do it. You're coaching staff looking for but you also
listening to your front office and assignability factors and all

(31:53):
the different things that have happened as you walk through
the moves, whether it's free agency, draft, you know, post draft.

Speaker 4 (31:59):
But with Barkley, I.

Speaker 6 (32:00):
Thought it was interesting because I know you could since
that Saque felt good that you know there wasn't going
to be a franchise tag And I also felt like, Saque,
you know when you don't really get an offer and
the club and you should know this when the club's like,
go out and see what it is and then bring
it back to us and let us know. Well, if
I'm the club, if I'm Howie Roseman, Doug, here's the
thing I say. I'm going to present an offer to you,

(32:22):
and you have one hour to decide if you want
it or not, because I know what's going to happen.
You're going to turn around and try to shop it
back to the club you have, and so this hour's
this is a one hour offer. If you take it, great,
If you don't want it, great, but you have to decide.
And so this is where you've got to understand when
a player leaves an organization, you've got to put parameters
on how you're going to handle it. And that's how
Saquon Barkley became an ego because I think Hawie Roseven

(32:44):
did a really good job in terms of probably framing
it where saque maybe didn't want to come back, but
also maybe didn't have a lot.

Speaker 1 (32:50):
Of options there. I've talked about this for the last
couple of days. I'm glad you brought it up. The
first first thing is is the mistake not because they
were a million off at the end of it, right,
they're basically a million off. It's a very based upon reports,
a very similar deal at most Eagles will pay them
a million dollars. More So, the first thing is, and

(33:12):
I notice like in terms of media, this happens all
the time where you know, when you feel undervalued, even
when they come up to the number that you feel
really really good about, you still carry that with you.
And I think that's the point you're talking about with
the Eagles right where you still carry that well, like
they don't really want you, do, they don't worry want
me do? They don't really respect me? Is that that
what we were getting at?

Speaker 6 (33:33):
Absolutely? I think exactly right. And so the problem is
that tie goes to the new team because you feel
disrespected about how it's all gone down, and it took
somebody else to say they want you to make the
original place say well, no, no, we want you to.
I mean it happens to all of us in all
day life, right, everyday life. You know there might be
those kind of situations you're like, well, wait a second,
why don't you just offer that in the first place.

(33:53):
You didn't want to put anything in front of me.
And so you know, for me, if I was the Giants,
it's easiest sit there and take a step back and say,
but when I know the character Sakuon Barkley is exceptional,
When I look at the play and the tape and
know how important it is to win this year and
to find out whether we've got this potential quarterback or

(34:14):
we don't have this quarterback. You know, I know Joe said,
I don't want my forty million dollar quarterback, you know,
handing off to a twelve million dollar running back. Well,
you know what, Philadelphia says that I got a fifty
million dollars quarterback and they got no problem handing it
off to that same guy. And so I think it's
that important to be able to establish that part of
your game. And I think it's going to hurt the
Giants this year.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Okay, Now, now I'll take the opposite side and say,
I think this is a mistake from sa Quon. From
this standpoint, you're no longer a giant like ever, you know,
and I don't know. And this is I know this
from college athletics. I'm sure most people know from high
school athletics as well. Like it's one thing to transfer,
it's another thing to go from OU to Texas, or

(34:54):
go from OSU to OU, or go from Arizona to UCLA,
or go from Notre Dame to sc or et cetera.
Like he was a giant, and as John Merraw said,
he arguably the most popular giant on the football team.
You go like you can leave anywhere. You go play
for the Eagles. You kind of first year, they'll they'll
be they'll, the fans will be nice. After that, you're

(35:16):
not a Giant anymore, and nobody even remember that you're
drafted by the Giants and all of that sweat equity
you had is gone. And I think there's a value
in that, even if the Eagles are a far better
football team in football better un franchise.

Speaker 6 (35:31):
Yeah, I think the hard part is the position he plays.
It's running back, and you have to treat this as
your business, as Sequon Barkley's business, And how do you
secure as much financial security you possibly can during the
small window of an NFL career when you you know,
you realize it was twenty one, twenty two years to

(35:52):
get to the window, and it's going to be forty
years outside the our fifty years after that window that
you got to, you know, hopefully a four to eight
your career where you can secure as many financial pieces
as you can. And I'm afraid I understand what you're saying.
There's one thing, like you know, Dallas uses it all
the time in negotiations there's you know, you understand the
value of the star and the helmet, like what that brings,

(36:13):
and you know other things that are around that from
marketing and promotions and all those different things. I think
Saquan has kind of played that game in the New
York market, and I think he looked at this and said,
I've got to run my business, and my business says
I'm going to make the most money I can on
the field, and I'll deal with that. And I know
what you mean in terms of like, boy, it's the
Eagles and the Giants, it's it's it's the same as

(36:37):
you know, the Chiefs and the Raiders. You know, that's
that kind of thing, like you don't really leave to
that team.

Speaker 4 (36:41):
But I think this is.

Speaker 6 (36:42):
One of those ones where I almost think that take
one took it to say I'll show you and.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
I'll I'm sure I'm sure he did.

Speaker 4 (36:48):
I'm sure.

Speaker 1 (36:49):
Okay, so let's get down to brass tacks. Which is
the real Eagles or maybe which is the real jail
and hurts. You know, you go back two years ago
and it was ye they got in the playoffs, like ye,
you go back or that's three years ago, right, you
go back two years ago and he's sentiually the best

(37:09):
player in the league. And then last year it's okay,
I know you have a new play caller on both sides,
but which one is the real Jalen Hurts.

Speaker 6 (37:19):
Yeah, I think it's a blend between last year and
the player of the year type of player. But the
thing is, when you look at Jalen Hurts, you've got
to always throw in the rushing touchdowns because that's such
a huge part of his game, and so that really
kind of skews the numbers more towards while a better
player than a lot when you sit there and say, well,
it's double digit touchdowns in terms of on the ground.

(37:40):
He just has to you know, clean up the interceptions
and can't turn.

Speaker 4 (37:43):
The ball over.

Speaker 6 (37:43):
This is a team that's got to be able to
win that way, and I think that's why they won
saque I think they wanted that for sure, guy that's
big enough that I can turn around hand to him
or run pass options, and that defensive coordinators have to
respect that that ball make go and hits the Saquan's hands,
either in the flats or just coming downhill at you.
And I think that's a big piece of what they
want to be, and I think they feel like that's

(38:05):
going to get the best of Jalen Hurts as well.
So I think I think with Jalen, I think you're
getting the blend, which I think is obviously good enough
to battle the Dallas Cowboys for the division title and
also battle the forty nine ers for or whichever team,
whether it's the Packers or whichever team you.

Speaker 4 (38:22):
See for the NFC.

Speaker 6 (38:24):
So I think I think you're still getting the good
Jalen Hurts. I don't think this turns into Carson Wentz
for the Eagles, do the does.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
It feels like Jordan Love is going to have a
new deal by the time camp starts. It just does
mean his there's a quiet confidence with when he's been
asked about it. Brian Goodencun is kind of the same
thing that there's no there's no panic or no freak
out there is the number is the yearly average going
to be a four, three or four or five for

(38:53):
the first number?

Speaker 6 (38:54):
Oh, I think the first name that will be a
five if they get a deal done. I don't think
that Jordan. I think Jordan Loves now said last year,
you know, we kind of split the baby, and I
bet on me, and you guys bet on me and boom.
You know, I had the success early. I had a
little hiccup in between, but certainly towards the end of
the season we were running on full cylinders in Green Bay,

(39:15):
and you know, made a nice little run, and certainly
with all the skill guys around him that are so useful,
it's for a GM you're excited about doing that. I
personally would like to get into the season and get
the game eight and then pull the trigger on the
fifty to fifty five deal. And I would sit there
and say, now, if I was in the negotiation, I
might be a forty eight though, but I would tell them,

(39:38):
if you get me to game eight and you're doing
what you did last year, I'll take you to fifty
five year. I got no problem. So you've got to
decide do you want to bet on yourself or do
you want the deal right now? And if it's a
five year, you know, two hundred and thirty five million
dollar contract, I can do that. But if you want
to go for five years when you're sixty, give me
eight games. Let's see where we said stuck.

Speaker 1 (39:57):
Got leave show here on Fox sports. Okay, let's circle
back to Caleb Williams. Right, since we're talking Packers Tuck Bears.
I go through the airport in Chicago today and like
five different Bears fans like now it changes. Now, we're
going to get them now, right, I've just been complete
dominance in the last twenty five years coming out of

(40:19):
Green Bay. They've revamped that offense dramatically, and it started
to look different when they change the offensive line, and
look they changed the defense. I'm at the end of
last season with a trade. What are your thoughts on
Caleb Williams and his ability to compete immediately?

Speaker 6 (40:36):
Well, he's going to get the job. I think it's
gonna I personally, as much as Caleb Williams has lots
of pieces in his puzzle, I think it's going to
be a slower start than people realize. I think it's
going to be a harder journey than people expect. I
think that you know a lot of people have talked
up and that's true. They have absolutely improved the offensive
side of the ball with the skilled players and the

(40:58):
experience on that side of the ball, and to help
Caleb Williings be the best he can be. I still
think the process sceing is going to be harder than
Caleb thinks. And I think the beginning is going to
be a tougher journey than people say. So you know,
I'm not as I'm not as you know guns in
saying hey, look Caleb Wills can go in there and
just start to light things up. I think it's gonna
be a little bit harder a journey. I think you're

(41:18):
going to see a lot of interceptions early his career,
and I think you see a lot of frustrations, and
I think it's going to be very interesting to see
ken Caleb work himself out of that frustration into the
player he can be versus balls in that trap and
then kind of get sucked down a hole of you know,
angry Bears fans going, we did it again, we missed.
It's another Kate McNown We just got the wrong guy,

(41:39):
and it'll be she also watch the other quarterbacks around
with these all these players that were selected obviously five
or six of the top twelve, five of them are
going to play pretty quickly how they all compare. Because
I think that they're all going to be watching each
other stats too, and that's a very dangerous game to
play as a young quarterback in the National Football.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
League speaking of uh, speaking of young quarterbacks, and you
said you'd watch the Giants thing any cause for concern
with Jade Williams, where many people said his answers weren't correct,
he didn't have the processing of other quarterbacks. When you're
sitting down with whiteboard with Jad.

Speaker 6 (42:14):
And Daniels, yeah, I wasn't scared. I just think there's
something really special about him. I actually think he's going
to be the guy that edwin it's all said and done.
And this is very dangerous for me because you know,
you want to make a prediction and I'll hold to
it and we'll talk about it and if I'm.

Speaker 1 (42:30):
Wrong, hold on, are you doing a hot take?

Speaker 4 (42:33):
I just feel I'm just kidding me.

Speaker 1 (42:34):
I'm messing with you. That's not a hot take when
you've done this your whole life, and it's an educated
it's an educated guess on what his potential is. But
go ahead.

Speaker 6 (42:42):
I like Jayden Daniels. I like those fits at the
coaching with Cliff Kingsbury.

Speaker 4 (42:47):
I like his skill set.

Speaker 6 (42:48):
I think he's different and I bet you that he's
doing better than people think and I think he's going
to be the one that every going to look back
and look at the Bears and go, we took the
wrong guy.

Speaker 1 (42:56):
The only thing that people say about Cliff that's a
negative in the Nfellas you don't protect your pastor enough
that that Kyler was getting hit like crazy. I don't
know how much of that's Kyler with the protections or
how much of that is scheme. That's your only fear
there is if you don't get rid of that thing quick,
are you? Are you just getting killed back there?

Speaker 6 (43:15):
And I think the goal is and this is where
I think that's where Arizona struggled with Kyler is maybe
he wasn't putting in the time and he should be
in terms of like this is where the ball goes
right now, and that's where you just got to trust.
This is the spot you throw it to. This is
open boom. And that's where I think there was frustration
with Kyler because I think they felt like he's not
taking the reads, he's not doing what he's supposed to do,

(43:36):
and now he's looking bad because he's taken Zackson. Really,
as we go through this during the week, he must
you know, that's where the whole contract was written like
make sure you study your tape. You know, It's like, Wow,
what a insult that is. But I think that was
part of the reason why Kyler, and that's probably part
of the reason why I didn't work with Cliffs there either,
is that there was a frustration in terms of do
what the play says and get that ball out of

(43:57):
your hands.

Speaker 1 (43:58):
Mark Dominic, you spent twenty years and NFL front offices
