Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Doug Gottlieb Show, the Bonus on Fox Sports Trading, the
iHeart Radio app. Welcome in. I hope you're doing great.
Doug Gottlieb Show, broadcast every single day from the Tiraq
dot Com Studios. Okay, here's the question, Jase two, is
it better for the NBA? Now, look, it's really good
(00:33):
for the NBA if Team USA wins this game against
Serbia that while we're recording the pod it is taking place. Okay,
but is it better for the NBA for USA Basketball
to beat France in the Championship game or to lose
to France in the Championship game?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Discuss I think there would be a massive like windfall
for the NBA if Wemby was to upset Team USA
and the gold medal game. I know a lot's got
to happen until then, but if Wemby was to upset
the USA and the Gold Medal game and have a
bunch of highlights, because we have this this argument all
(01:17):
year about who the next face of the NBA is,
and there really isn't one that sticks out. But if
you could have your youngest star that's a freaking nature
upset USA. I'm guessing USA will be favored by twenty
points in that game. I just think that would be
like a great like a discussion point, like for the
(01:38):
NBA at the very least, like maybe this is the guy,
Like he's young enough, he's got the looks, he's got,
he's a freaking nature. I think it would be great
news for the NBA of France upsets Team USI.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well, if they're favored by twenty, lock me in. I
will take I will take France ten days, I mean
every day of the week, twice on Sunday. If that's
the If that's the line, that's.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
My true below is that generous. I have no idea.
I'm just I'm just gonna.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
They haven't covered. I don't think any of these spreads
and that's gonna be a that's that's a hard game,
Like that's a really really hard game, really hard game.
So I I would not I wouldn't take them. But
so you think if they win. I think the best
(02:26):
thing is if it's a great game in USA and
Team USA wins at the end, but if they lose yeah,
it's it is a How amazing would that passing of
the torch be considering you know, you have the last
wave of great players with Lebron, with Steph with KD
(02:48):
and then you have Victor webin Yam on the other side.
I think in terms of the future of the NBA,
he him playing well is incredibly important, But you still
want the American players winning in the end. I just
I'd be really interested to know what would it what
would it look like if France end up pulling the
(03:08):
upset at the end. That would just be interesting. How
many how much would people just jump ship on USA
basketball and like you don't want, you don't want. I
don't think you don't want a world where foreign players
are viewed to be better than ours. We're still supposed
(03:32):
to be the best, even if it's by a smaller
and smaller margin. Because once you get there, I think
you get to some of the hockey stuff, you're like, yeah,
it's not really our thing anymore. Let's go back to football.
I don't know, it's interesting. Tell me what you think
at Gottlieb Show. And again, remember USA basketball has to
beat Serbian or for that to happen.
Speaker 1 (03:50):

Speaker 2 (04:00):
All right, let's go to the Queen City of Cincinnati
where Kelsey Conway is waiting. She covers the Bengals for
The Inquirer, and that's the since thatn Inquirer and US
say today and she joins us now on the Doug
gatlig Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Kelsey, how would
you characterize the Bengals camp like in terms of expectations
(04:24):
internally of this Bengals team? How would you characterize it?
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Well, I feel like you can't start the conversation about
the Bengals training camp without pointing to the fact that
this is the longest that Joe Burrow has been able
to practice straight consecutively in his entire career. So I
think that's where the conversation starts to end. It's all
about how Joe has looked and the fact that they've
been able to get through so much of their install period.
(04:51):
It really work through parts of their offense that they
have never been able to in years past because Joe
has been injured or he's been coming back from an
ag CL recovery where they've had a monitor, you know,
is he practicing one day off two days on. So
I think that what the Bengals offense has been able
to get to at this point in the training camp
period is probably the biggest story for me. Yes, they
(05:14):
haven't had Jamar Chase because right now he is not practicing,
but they've gotten p Higgins involved in him and Joe
are you know, on the same page, and they've gotten
some some of their newer pieces on offense to be
able to get in sync with Joe, and I feel
like they probably feel a lot better about going into
this first preseason game knowing Joe has been able to
(05:36):
practice every single day and what that's done for their
offense as a whole.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Still gott leep. Sure. Here on Fox Sports Radio, Kelsey
Gonway joins us, Okay, he's looked different with the new haircut,
but he also hasn't had had Jamar Chase. What what
is the vibe like around the team with this elongated holdout.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Well, you know, it's it's an interesting situation here because
Jamar Chase has been at every single practice and he's
been you know, in the huddle, talking to the receivers
and they come off the field. Yesterday I saw him
chatting with Zach Taylor for a while. I saw him
pat the Bengals Director of personnel Doutobin on the back
the other day. Like there's not animosity here with the
(06:18):
Bengals and Jamar Chase. It's been kept very tight Lipps
in terms of what's really going on. And every time
I've asked Zach Taylor or someone else in the media
has asked Zach, he hasn't been willing to go on
the record and saying, you know, it's a contract holden.
But if you read the Sea leaves behind what Joe
Burrow said and reiterating that, you know, he's been a
(06:41):
voice to Jamar after what he went through last year.
Every you know, he's a perfectly healthy, provow caliber wide receiver,
like there's no other reason he wouldn't be practicing. I
think we're twelve days in at this point, but there's
been no animosity, So I think that this deal will
get done. It's just a matter of if it gets
done before the first week of the season this year
(07:04):
or if it drags on into next off season. It's
hard to tell which way it's going to go. But
as far as how it's impacted the team, it hasn't
because Jamar hasn't made it about himself. He hasn't been
selfish with it, so it really hasn't been a distraction
at all.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Okay, tell me about the defense. What's the most important
aspect that this defense has needed to get cleaned up
in the offseason.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Well, I think you have to start with the changes
that they made in the secondary. I mean, last year
the Bengals were one of the worst defenses in the NFL,
you know, kind of from top to bottom. They didn't
get after the passer enough, and they let up far
too many explosive plays, and they weren't really stout against
the run. They made a couple of changes in the
off season, so I think the biggest takeaway me on
(07:51):
the defensive side of the ball is seeing how these
new pieces are fitting in. So they went out and
got Von Bell back from the Panthers. They went out
out and sign Genostone, another safety from the Ravens, and
free agency, they change up their safety room. They also
have a battle going on outside at cornerback opposite of
Cam Taylor. Brit So we're trying to still see who's
(08:12):
going to be the starting cornerback with Cam Taylor Britz.
There's a lot of moving pieces on the back end,
but they feel like that's going to make them a
lot better. And then up front, you know, it's been
really hard to see what changes they're making because Sam
Hubbard and Trey Hendrickson have been dealing with injuries through
the first part of camps. But I know that they're
(08:32):
excited about what Sheldon Rankins can bring from a past
rushing standpoint. So you won't really be able to gauge
with some of these veteran guys can do until week
one because most of them aren't going to participate much
in the preseason games and joint practices. You know, there's
no live tackling, so it's you know, kind of hard
to seed the line play. But as far as defensively,
(08:55):
I would say the biggest storyline has been how all
of those new pieces in the second barrier sitting together.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Sot Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Kelly Conway
is our guest. Kelly, what's the biggest position battle taking
place in camp?
Speaker 4 (09:09):
I would say, right now, the cornerback battle between DJ
Turner and Dac Hill, they have yet to solidify who's
going to be that number two starting outside cornerback. So
right now that's kind of the starting battle that we're
all focused on.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
It's it's one that that anything I've read, that's what
that's that's what we discuss as as well. Obviously, as
you pointed out right, this is the most they've had
Joe Burrow in camp, and I'm sure he's not going
to play in the preseason. You look at their their schedule,
you open up Patriots at home. That feels like a
(09:47):
like a gift, right Like a Patriots team that's starting
kind of all over feels like a gift. How important
is that second game in Kansas City for this roster?
Speaker 4 (09:57):
I think it's huge because you know, this year, the
expectation is to host a playoff game and win the division.
And in order to do that, the Bengals cannot afford
to go to another zero and two start or climb
out of a one in three hole like they've done
the last couple of years. And this game against Kansas
City really matters because I know the expectations inside the
(10:18):
locker room aren't just making the playoffs. You know, this
team really feels like they could be one of the
best teams in the AFP, and you know, if both
teams have similar records down the stretch, this Week two
game really matters in terms of you know, potentially talk
about it as a number one overall scene. And you
know that's not far fetched with this Bengals team because
when Joe Burrow has been healthy, they've gone to the
(10:39):
ANFC championship game. So this game, the week that Week
two game is really important, and I think that it's
going to get the Bengals moving faster at the start
of the season because they you know, with Zach Taylor,
they've really struggled to get off to a faster start
here in the season. And I think that having your
biggest rival of the game that you typically circle above
(11:01):
any other game on your calendar, having that in Week two,
I think they believe will bring out the best in them.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Kelly, You're the best. I love your working the Inquiry
in USA today. Thanks so much for joining us and
look forward to talking with you soon as we'll see
what the Bengals roll out with this year. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. And let's
welcome in Kelly Ford, who, of course, Kelly is our
college football analytics data ranking specialist. Is that Kelly you? Okay? Okay?
Speaker 3 (11:44):
With that?
Speaker 2 (11:45):
With I mean, if you were to intro what you
want to bring to the table, what would it be.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
Yeah, I think that's perfect, Doug. I need to put
that on a business card. But no anything college football
power rating, resume ranking, just college football analytics. I'm your
guy for that, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Okay. We talked a little bit two weeks ago when
you had you on just about how different it is,
and so I guess that's my biggest question, is I
please don't let me let you think that I'm disrespecting
your data. But so much of this predictive data is
built upon what we've seen in the past. This is
(12:26):
a whole different landscape. Not only do you factor in
the transfer portal and now we've had a couple of
years into it where people are sort of figuring out more,
but you also have new conferences, different travel, different approach
to scheduling. How different do you think the results are
with so many of the other parts to college football
being different.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
I think it's a really fair question, Doug. And where
I spent a lot of time this summer and the
past previous couple summers is looking at what is the
impact of the increased usage of the transfer portal, of
the extra COVID year of eligibility, which of course we're
still dealing with, of the one time and now unlimited
free transfers as we see as roster management, building is
much different than it's been in the past. So all
(13:09):
of those are fair questions. We have some really good
test cases, you know, with USD when Lincoln Riley took
over Colorado each of the past two years is providing
us really good data points now as to how we
can use this information moving forward. You talked about the
other things that are changing about the sport, the conference
realignment and what that landscape looks like, the twelve team
CFP and how that differs from the four team Some
(13:30):
of those things are not inherently going to impact a
projection model at this stage. Now, the thing that you
touched on that's really interesting is with the new conference realignment,
and let's just use the ACC for example. You know
you've got cal and Stanford traveling multiple times throughout the
year across the country to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
There are scheduling dynamics, the term that I use to
(13:53):
talk about things at play with rest advantages, disadvantages, playing
teams coming off of and off week you know, back
to back row games, weeknight games, whatever it is. Those
types of things certainly are going to play a larger
part in any singular game projection. However, as we build
the model in the preseason, those things aren't explicitly being
factored in because those aren't what we're looking at. That
(14:14):
becomes real for the game projections once we get going
into the season. And I'm very much looking forward to
learning as we go this year so that I can
best incorporate those learning into future seasons.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
With the ratings, Okay, with that in mind, you have
a bunch of different ratings things you put out on
your site, including watchability is how do you calculate watchability?
Speaker 5 (14:37):
So watchability for me has nothing to do with the
number of eyeballs that are going to be on the game.
What the TV ratings are going to be are how
big a fan base is? For me, watchability is a
weighted score of projected quality and by that I mean
the average K forward rating of the two teams involved
and projected competitiveness. So what's the kboard spread of the
two teams of that game? Using my model, I'm then
(14:59):
able to generate a score from those two weighted components
on a zero to ten scale for every single game
involving an FBS team. And using that then we can
look at, in any given week or in any given window,
what are the most highly watchable games? Using that criteria,
which team, over the course of the twelve game regular
season have the highest average watchability and all sorts of
(15:19):
things like that. So again not trying to predict what
TV numbers are going to be or what TV audiences
are going to be, but how good are the two
teams involved and how close do we project this game
to be? And if we look just at Week one,
kind of the games that score a nine or better.
Notre Dame at Texas A and M that's a nine
point eight. LSU and USC is a neutral site game
that's a nine point six for me, Penn State at
(15:41):
West Virginia a ninth rivalry game nine point four, Miami
at Florida, huge rivalry in the Sunshine State nine point three,
and then a neutral site Clems in Georgia is a
nine point zero. So again you're looking at those two factors,
they're weighted so they're not equal, and then we're able
to get that score on a zero to ten scale
for every single game that involves an FBS team.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Stut Gottlib Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, how
do you predict somebody like Alabama that I would say
lost a lot to the draft, but also you lose
Nick Saban? How do you how do you do any
sort of predictive analysis there?
Speaker 5 (16:18):
Yet, the ladder is more important there for Alabama specifically
because that's the program that we see the lost talent
to the draft, to the pro rank, even from transfers out.
We see that on that on a year in year
out basis.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
The how do you.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
Replace Nick Saban? That's the more intriguing question for me.
And as we're looking at things again in the preseason,
we're looking at three main things. Your returning production, how
well has your team performed in my rating system in
recent years, and how well have you recruited in recent years,
Alabama grades out very well in those areas. I do
have coaching rating coaching grades that has not been explicitly
factored into the model yet because I haven't had the
(16:52):
time to battest at the level that I feel comfortable
to incorporate. But what I would say from a coaching
standpoint is we can expect Alabama on the sideline take
a step back objectively because Nick Satan is for many people,
myself included, the greatest college football coach to ever do it.
But what I would tell Tide fans is you have
a proven winner coming in in Kaylen de bor Just
look at this man's resume. He has won at every
(17:15):
single stop he's been at, regardless of level, regardless of
the amount of resources. So is it going to be challenging. Absolutely,
any job in the SDC is. But I think Kaylen
de Boor is up for it. And my numbers right
now only make Alabama a projected underdog in one game
this year. That's Week five, coming off and off week Georgia.
My number one power of the team comes to Tuscaloosa,
and I give the Crimson Tide a thirty eight percent
(17:36):
chance to win.
Speaker 6 (17:37):
That game.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Stut Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. Kelly Ford
join us. You can check out his ranking system, follow
him on social media the traditional website as well. Okay,
I'm looking at Week one games and it's a hodgepodge, right,
a hodgepodge. Clemson's a fascinating one to me. Right. So
(17:58):
here's Clemson, who you know, years ago won a national championship.
They were humming along and when the transfer Boral came along,
they came along. They've shunned it, shunned it, but they
have maintained balance from within. They're taking on Georgia week
one of the season.
Speaker 4 (18:16):
Right.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
This is a game which we always look for, that
big game in the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia Clemson.
And remember, as much as you think it's a home
game for Georgia, and relatively is it's about two and
a half hours to Clemson from Atlanta, where as opposed,
it's an hour from Athens. But most of the fan base,
the alums are all in Atlanta as well. What's your
(18:38):
outlook on Clemson this season?
Speaker 5 (18:40):
Clemson is a very interesting team, Doug. And you're absolutely
right that Dabo's reluctance to embrace the transfer portal is
he's in the minority in that and he is one
of very few coaches to take that approach. We will
see if it pays off just looking at results, it
hasn't yet. That doesn't mean it can't work, but it
hasn't worked yet. If you look at clem since k
Forward Rating from twenty fifteen to twenty twenty, they were
(19:04):
never lower than number five year end in my Power
Ratings Tense twenty twenty. They finished ninth, tenth, and nineteenth
last year, So there has been a slide in recent years,
and I think a lot of that NP contributed to
Dabo's approach to the transfer portal. I'm projecting Clemson to
be number fourteen this year coming into the year them
in Florida State are the two favorites in the ACC
(19:25):
for me. Those two programs have the highest projected conference
win total. So right now my numbers favorite both those
teams to make it to Charlotte at the end of
the year. You asked explicitly about the Week one game
against Georgia, which I do believe that it's probably going
to be a crowd that favors Georgia, but because it
is technically at a neutral site, I'm not applying a
home field advantage here. I am treating it in the
(19:45):
model's viewpoint as a truly neutral game. Even though it's
treated as neutral, I still only have a fifteen percent
chance for Clemson to win that game. Like I said,
Clemson's the top fifteen team, but Georgia's number one for me,
and Georgia's number one by more than four points over
the number two team in my model, So I think
at this point Georgia is a really really good football team.
That's certainly going to be a big test for Clemson
(20:06):
if they win it. I think that's just, you know,
bonus a cherry on top to start the year here,
and now you kind of got some house money. I
don't think it's a must win for Clemson though, especially
in this expanded twelve team playoff era. They do have
to go to Florida State in Week six. That's going
to be a huge test. But I think Clemson, even
at ten and two, could make their way to Charlotte
and certainly have a good chance obviously to steal the
(20:27):
AQ or to get in the back door with an
at large if they finished the year ten and three
with their only losses presumably being the Georgia who we
expect to be in that playoff, and then also maybe
a couple losses to a Florida State team that many
expect to win the ACC So if not do or
die for Clemson, it's a good chance for them to
test themselves and they're doing it out of conference, which
I think is really important for a program like Clemson
(20:47):
that really needs to find this footing again if they
want to get back among the elite of college football.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
You can go to k d Ford kford rankings dot
com if you want to see more of Kelly Ford's rankings.
That you have Oklahoma as eighth in the country. And
it's fascinating right because last year they bounce back some.
Now they step up into the SEC higher level of competition.
I don't think anybody would would argue there, although they've
(21:13):
loaded up as well. Why do you believe Oklahoma, who
some believe will finish as low as eighth in the SEC,
is a top ten team hitting in the season.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
Oklahoma is such a good case study this year, Doug,
and it's a team that over the years I've really
tried to separate k Ford ratings the model from Kelly
Ford to person. I really try to separate and have
my own view of these teams. Yes, I like the model,
Yes I use the model, but the model is not
the end all be all, even for me. It has
blind spots, it has weaknesses, and I think Oklahoma might
(21:45):
be a team that's exploiting some of those blind spots
and weaknesses. This year, you said some people have Oklahoma
projected to finish the middle.
Speaker 7 (21:51):
Of the SEC.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
I'm among those people. I have Oklahoma projecting as four
and four in conference play, even though I have Oklahoma
as the number eight rated team in the country. The
schedule is that difficult for the Sooners this year. It's
the number six most difficult schedule in the entire country
by my numbers. It's the number three most difficult SEC
only slate by my numbers. So it's incredibly difficult for Oklahoma.
(22:15):
I'm projecting eight and four for a team that's top
ten power rated. Why does the model view it so highly?
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Though?
Speaker 5 (22:20):
For me, they're top fifteen on both offense and defense.
If you're looking at the returning production, the way that
this team has performed in the model in recent years
and how well they recruit the things that the model
is looking for. Oklahoma grades out very well, I will say.
Bret Benables has done a very good job of turning
around the defensive side of the ball there in Norman,
which of course was Lincoln Riley's Achille peel while he
(22:41):
was there. The offenses were always incredible, finishing number one
in my model three years in a row on the
offensive side of the ball from twenty sixteen to twenty eighteen,
but the defense I'd gotten as low as number eighty
nine during that time. The fact that this is now
a well balanced team top fifteen on both sides, the
model really really likes that. But because the schedule is
so difficult, it's very very possible, i'd say even likely,
(23:01):
that Oklahoma racks up the losses this year, even though
the model suggests it's a very very good football team.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Awesome stuff, Kelly, Thanks so much for joining us. Look
forward to talking to the season gets started. You're the best.
Remember k Ford Ratings Rankings dot Com if you want
to check that out. Thanks Kelly, great stuff.
Speaker 5 (23:19):
Awesome Thanks man.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Let's get to the.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Fox says and now say Patrick and Charles Barkley at
this exchange about Charles staying with Turner Sports after next season.
Speaker 8 (23:31):
And they're like, we're gonna keep doing the show. What
does that mean?
Speaker 2 (23:37):
That's what I said.
Speaker 8 (23:42):
Okay, So I said, hey, y'all know, y'all know, my
number one priority is to keep people working at Turner.
That's always been my number one priority. And Dan, they
say they're gonna keep doing the show, and I said,
(24:03):
do it. I'll take a pay cut. I said, I'll
take a pay cut. They said that's not necessary, and
they said, we're going to continue doing the show.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
I don't have any idea what that means.
Speaker 9 (24:17):
Wait, you had to ask them when they said that that,
what do you mean after this season we're going to
continue to do the show?
Speaker 1 (24:24):
And they said what.
Speaker 7 (24:25):
I think they're going to try to figure it out.
I mean because we won't have the NBA, So I
think they're going to try to figure it out. But
my number one concern Dan has always been the people
at Turner. So even if we do something, a lot
of people turn it going to keep their job. Like
(24:46):
I say, Dan, I have zero idea what.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
We're going to do. I think what they're going to
try and do is have somebody sub license it, like
Amazon sub license it. That would be what I would
do is then and then put it on both That'd
be my guess. But Charles is super loyal to Turner
(25:10):
and to the people around him. I also know that
he you know, part of the I'm going to retire
is all wrapped up in emotions, and some of it
is a negotiation topic, a notion negotiat employee. But I've
been friends with Charles Barkley for I don't know, fifteen years,
(25:30):
twenty years, and he's solid dude, So we need him
on TV. I don't know what that show looks like,
but they didn't talk that much about basketball anyway, so
I don't think it's that big of departure if they
do it about all sports. Here's Brady Quinn talk about
Michigan and the sign stealing scandal.
Speaker 10 (25:45):
As much as you want to make it about the
Cotter Stallion saga, the truth and the reality of it
is it doesn't have really anything to do with that
one thing. I mean, as we talked about before with Stallions,
he wasn't a part of this program at all. In
the second half of last year where they played their
most important games versus Penn State, versus Ohio State into
the College Football Playoffs to win a national championship that
(26:07):
had nothing to do with Connor Stallions. So I'm just
tired of this false narrative that's put out there about Michigan.
And I'm not surprised I'm defending Michigan in this case,
but it's just it's I'm so tired of hearing it.
It's like, look, take the ls folks, and if you
think your team wasn't doing something, whether it's through recruiting
or whether it's through you know, scouting and all this stuff,
(26:28):
You're probably wrong. Everyone's trying to bend the rules in
some way. That's just the life in college football right now.
It is a very very crazy world, the wild wide
West that we're all living in.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
This is true. We are living in a crazy world.
It is the wildwell West, and I do think people
are doing things wrong. I continue to believe and like,
look the COVID stuff, it was crazy, right, how much
things were shut down. And this is the second school.
Arizona State was the other one which clearly by violated
(27:01):
some of the COVID rules. And again I'm not putting
it past Jim Harbaugh to violate a rule that he
deemed to be a dumb rule. But I just again,
I'm of the belief, and I know it's supposed to change,
and I have to deal with these rules as Division
one coach and not violate them. The rules to me
(27:22):
that have always mattered is don't pay kids, don't change
their grades. You know, don't pay kids, don't change their grades.
Those are the ones that everyone agrees on. And now
you can pay kids legally through an nil whatever. I
still think that should be earned on some level. But again,
(27:45):
just you know, this stuff is such nickel and dime stuff.
It really feels like if it was anybody other than
Jim Harbaugh, would we ever give a damn. It's reality
to it.
Speaker 9 (27:58):
This is.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Colin Cowherd talking about Brandon Ayuk.
Speaker 9 (28:03):
So Brandon Aiyuk will never play in his career if
he leaves San Francisco with a better offensive coach. Mike
Tomlin is not a better coach at getting receivers open.
He'll never have more moderate weather, may never have a
better roster, may never win seventy two percent of his games.
He could go to worse weather, a tougher conference, a
(28:25):
worst roster, shakier ownership, don't have the same head, coach,
double team now on every possession.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
It's a choice.
Speaker 9 (28:33):
San Francisco would likely pay him twenty three million a year.
He wants twenty six and a half. Devonte Adams made
that choice from a Hall of Fame quarterback continuity winning
every Sunday to the Raiders. The opposite in all of them.
Tyreek Hill. Remember when he mattered in January and February, Hey,
(28:55):
but he got the bag. But he's irrelevant when it mattered.
Now he watches the games like all of us on television.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
I don't think Tabreek Hill is irrelevant. I do think
that that if you go to the Raiders, I understand
Collins point. I don't think he made it stronger with
with with Miami. And the point is that if you're
on a good team they trade you away, they're still
going to be good. They're not going to miss you.
I agree, and I think that's why Pittsburgh. That's why
Pittsburgh surprises me. I don't think there's a reality to
(29:30):
the Pittsburgh thing. I think that's from the agent side,
But I could be wrong. I can be wrong. My
guess is he stays because no one wants to be irrelevant.
Players especially now don't want to be irrelevant. That's because
they live through social media, and social media is about relevance,
not actually about equity. That's what the Fox says. Say,
(29:51):
Let's find out who or what is annoying Jason Stewart,
and now it's your annoying it, Doug.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
The Kansas City Chiefs had a couple significant off field
occurrences this past off season. One of them includes a
kicker who said, in kind of all the wrong words
that women's most important job is for as a wife
and as a mother. And then there was a player
(30:25):
who chose to get behind the wheel and go one
hundred and twenty miles an hour to cause a major
pile up. No deaths, but they walked away from the
scene of the crime, and I think there were guns
allegedly in the vehicle. The latter has not had to
answer for his decision, but Harrison Butker's being his feat's
being put to the fire, and he defended his position yesterday.
Speaker 6 (30:50):
I've appreciated all the feedback I know when it comes
to football, I don't really look at the comments, good
or bad.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Towards me.
Speaker 6 (30:55):
But with it being the off season and stating a
lot of these things, I was really curious as to
what people would be saying back to me. And I
respected all the viewpoints, but in terms of what I said,
you know, I prayed about it, and I thought about it,
and I was very intentional with what I said, and
I stand behind what I said. And I really believe
if people knew me as a person and understood that
(31:17):
I was coming from a place of love and not
a place of trying to attack or put people down,
that I only want the best for people, and that's
what I was trying to say there. I think the
people that were in that gymnasium all understood what I
was saying.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
So what annoys me is that he has to explain himself.
But I think we could put a can we close
this loop, Doug? Because the chiefs the daughter to the Air,
came out on Fox News and says she supports Harrison Bucker,
the star quarterback, star tight end and head coach of
all said, I don't agree necessarily with everything he says,
but he's a good person, and then they paid him
(31:53):
a ton of money, So I think we can close
the loop on this controversy.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
Right, Yeah, I thought it was. It was a long
time ago. I just I just had, you know. And
and this is like the truest way you can say.
We're a country where freedom of speech is defended. Remember,
just because you're free to speak does not mean you're
free your ramifications. But in this particular case, he's simply
(32:19):
showing his viewpoint. You know, this is how I see
how I see the world, and I again, I can
see nothing sinister towards it. Again, I think the issue
is that there are some points he made which are
clearly designed to trigger and elicit a reaction. You can
(32:42):
say whatever you want about the initial place in which
he said what he said, which he you know it was.
I believe it was to a church, was not, I
think it was. It was a college culver. Yeah, I mean,
you don't need to embargo it, but it was. It
was said to get people's attention. So I'm not going
to act like he didn't know there would be some pushback,
and he didn't know. He's a bright enough dude to
(33:03):
know what he's saying. But again, it as long as
your desire for your rights doesn't impede upon mine, Like
I don't really know exactly what the nontroversy sort of
is like not everyone's lifestyle is going to be embraced
by somebody who views it differently. And again, as long
as you're not saying you can't live a different lifestyle
(33:24):
than mine, which I don't believe he ever said, he
said what he values. So yeah, I've been over this
for a long time, you know. And again it's going
to be received differently by different people. And there will
forever be people who women, who who work and try
and balance a family. There are people who work and
don't want to have children. And you're allowed to do
all these things, and you're allowed to voice your opinion
(33:47):
on what you think is best for your own life,
your own family, your own country. Doesn't mean we have
to abide by it. So yeah, I'm with it. It
is annoying though that he said what he said, and
I like the fact they didn't have to apologize for it.
I also think, though, that the people who agree with
you part of it. I thought the way in which
(34:07):
it was handled from others in Kancy, which is like, look,
I don't agree with everything he said, because I don't,
But if you're a good dude. You treat people with respect,
and you're not, again, not violating my civil rights. I
don't really understand what the controversy is over exactly.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
This was really annoying to me personally because I love baseball.
I played baseball, if coach baseball, and I still follow
it closely. But the manager of the White Sox, ironically,
after they broke a twenty one game losing streak, he
was fired.
Speaker 8 (34:40):
All right.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
That was strange timing, and I'm not sure what a
firing in the first week of August does for any team.
But the annoying thing is is that I didn't know
his name, and that tells you a lot because I
follow the game and I love the game, and I
have a feeling if you pulled one hundred people on
the street, they wouldn't they would not know who the
(35:01):
manager of the White Sox was who just got fired.
It's just a kind of a sad, annoying reminder that
baseball has become more and more a niche sport like
hockey that is going to have a place in our world.
It's a business, it'll make some money, but it's getting
less and less relevant.
Speaker 8 (35:20):
So that's annoying.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
It is getting less and less relevant. It's crazy, I
told you on the phone, like it wasn't until yesterday
when I was listening to an update that I realized
how many games did Chicago White Sox have lost in
a row? Like I, it's not, It's just I don't
pay attention to it, and I have paid attention to baseball,
just like the White Sox. Like I saw my team,
I don't care not my division, that I pay attention
(35:43):
to whatever, and then it jumps out at you the
crazy thing. I think it should allow us to remember
the criticism of a Mike Trout or you major League
Baseball into not making Mike Trout when he was healthy
a bigger star, and you're like, I don't really know
what you can do as a player. As a sport,
you know, they've sped up the sport. I like it better.
I think it's more watchable than it was in the past.
(36:04):
But people have come to their conclusions about Major League
Baseball and they don't see him becoming Offen anytime soon.
What else, all right? Three? Two one. I think that
the continuing drama over things that we had moved on
for from like Harrison butker is just not why are
(36:35):
we doing this?
Speaker 9 (36:36):
I do.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
Because we can. All right, let's every day here in
the Dug Gottlieb showing the bonus podcast we play for
you something no one else is allowed to play. Why, well,
no FCC regulations here with the podcast. Let's play a
little because we can't.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
I'm just gonna say it's plain and simple.
Speaker 11 (37:00):
I'm content, meaning I can generate viral while I'm on vacation.
You are a reporter, which means you report on people
who are going viral, which means, sir, in my line
of work, which is podcasting, there would be never one
(37:22):
time that you will be going viral for me to
talk about you.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
There's nothing you are gonna say, sir, in.
Speaker 11 (37:32):
Sports that would be so fucking intriguing that is gonna
come across my fucking desk, and I'm gonna be like, yeah,
we should touch.
Speaker 1 (37:42):
This topic never.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
So that was Gilbert Reinas and he was talking about
our very own Rob Parker. He stated at the end
there's nothing you're gonna do that's gonna come across my desk.
But then he has done several minutes of rant about
Rob Parker because it came across his desk. I guess, Gilbert,
this was just a sample of tens of minutes he
(38:08):
has spent on live social media.
Speaker 12 (38:10):
The two hours today Parker two hours today on Rob Parker.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
So two hours of Rob Parker on rtway explained to me,
the two hours of Rob Parker.
Speaker 12 (38:19):
Gilbert Arenas spent two hours of his like No Chill
live stream. It's just him the podcast, and he was
talking about Rob for two hours today and like playing
clips back from even a couple of years ago up
until the one that got them all erked from a
few weeks ago. And he's just been reacting to him
(38:42):
for several hours this morning. So to get very derivative
about this this because we can as a little light
on the details. Okay, So Rob called him a racist
for his South Sudan take, and somehow several weeks later
it came across Gilbert's desk, as he said, he'll never
have anything Rob says come across his desk. Gilbert went
(39:05):
off on him earlier in the week, and then he
just went off on him for two hours today. And
I guess he has grabbed clips from other things that
Rob has said. So it's Gilbert Arenas v Rob Parker
for because we can today, So.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Nothing would come across his desk, only something came across
his desk, and then nothing's.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
Going to come across my desk that you say, you
are that irrelevant, but I'm going to spend hours talking
about something that came across my desk.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
He also had some really strange rant with Kenyan Barton
about how what does who was it? Who is the
player who is added to USA basketball?
Speaker 12 (39:46):
Oh Man.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
The player?
Speaker 2 (39:50):
Yeah, Derek, Yeah, they're quite you know. They were like
they were like, you could add Gary Payton the second
if you want defense, he plays defense. Why is he
so special? You could add Jimmy Butler. Like the thing
about Gilbert is Gilbert's always been bright. He's always able
to articulate what he says. But he's a fucking crazy person,
(40:11):
right Like we do know this, right Like, it doesn't
make him dumb, He just he just has opinions that
there's opinions that people agree with, there's opinions of people
don't agree with, and it's one of those. Because he played,
and because he was a tremendous player, he values opinions
above that of guys who didn't play. I understand that
(40:32):
I'm in much the same way. But he says playing
is stupid shit, and he also can be a bit
of a bully, and that's what he's doing here. Why
can we play for you? Because we can. That's it
for the end the Bonus Podcast. Check out the radio
show every day three to five Eastern, twelve two Pacific,
Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app. I'm Doug Godlig
