The way tire buying should be. I'm gonna read you
(00:44):
a quote and then we'll talk about it. Lamar Jackson
told GQ when he was asked about his haters. I
always say this, people hated Jesus. Not to compare myself
to Jesus. But it's like, if he got hated and
he was still a good person and still did did
follow through with its purpose, why can't I So he
(01:07):
didn't compare himself to Jesus, but he kind of did.
But the bigger thing is this, we're going to have
to reassess a word which is often misused. There's lots
of words that are misused. Now, there's expressions and phrases
that are misset. I'm not going to sit here like
I'm an English professor because I'm terrible at spelling. But
(01:29):
i do know that it's a tough row to hoe.
You cannot hoe a road, you hoe a row. You
couldn't care less, you couldn't care less. Remember this is
important because if you could care less, that means you
care and the expression I couldn't care less means I
don't care at all. That's why I couldn't care less.
(01:54):
We've actually changed, or maybe it's gen Z has changed
the meeting of the word literal where they've added an
additional meaning where it's actually more figurative than literal. Literal
is literal, Figurative is figurative. But for whatever reason, we've
changed that because we want to. But it's literally when
(02:18):
it's not literally is figuratively and figuratively is listed in
the Dictionary as the definition of figuratively is one of
the definitions of literally. Because pop culture is misused word enough,
we've also misused this whole hater thing. What is a hater.
Now I'm guessing that in Lamar Jackson's mind, it's guys
(02:41):
that tell him he sucks. But there's not really people
that say Lamar Jackson sucks, or there's not any that
are in existence anymore. Let's say he sucks. They may
not think he's a superl champion level quarterback, maybe not
a Hall of Famer, or he's a regular season quarterback.
But that's analysis more than hatred. Hatred would be one
(03:03):
off fan saying something stupid that doesn't make any sense.
But for whatever reason, we've allowed the word hater to
become synonymous with any type of negative analysis. So either
we have to redefine what a hater is or we
(03:24):
have to stop using the word hater, because to say,
Lamar Jackson, and as great as he is in the
regular season, he still has not shown the ability to
pick apart defenses in the postseason, where you have to
throw more, it's colder, it's harder to run. We don't
want you to run, we don't want you to get hurt,
you want a more developed offense, whatever, all these things like,
(03:45):
there is a balance there, and I would say ninety
five percent of the people who have said anything negative
about Lamar throughout his career, but especially now in the NFL.
It's more analysis than it is hatred. Yet we use
anything that's not one hundred percent positive be seen as
hatred and that ain't right. Jay sdu Can you think
(04:08):
of a different way to say it? Am I the
one supposed to adjust to We just how how we
usere haters? What should we do here?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
I think, Yeah, it's all in the the eye of
the beholder. You know, how you take criticism, how you
take comments.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
But I don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, detractors, distractors what's the word detractor? Maybe that's distractors,
But it's not.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Even a detractor if you're just going like, hey, you know,
he still doesn't he still doesn't see it well enough
and pick a part well enough in doubs like a
doubter is fine.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah, it's not even how Lamar takes it as much
as it is how Lamar defenders take it. Like you
never see the reaction like you do when you when
you hear something negative about Lamar Jackson. There's all these
people on social media that just come to his defense
and call you a hater. I don't know why it's
(05:00):
him specifically because things said about him have been said
about other quarterbacks, but for whatever reason, it land's different
for him or with him. I don't know why that's so,
but you hear this all the time that he is.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Because of the one off story of a wide receiver
coach and I know who the coach was asked him
if he was going to run at the combine. That's why.
And people have taken that to take steps to thinking
that I guess there's some racial undertones to it or whatever,
and the whole world is racist and had to get
(05:34):
Lamar Jackson, and so when there's any part of analysis
which is negative about him, you're a racist. Like Russell
Wilson's been picked apart ten ways with sideways. It's not
because of his race. It's because he used to be
on path to being a Hall of Famer and then
he gets super weird and now he's been bad. But whatever.
(05:58):
I just the word hater is just such a weird thing.
It's so off putting because you're like, Okay, well, I'm
not a hater. I'm just trying to give some real
football analysis, and yet any time you do, you're called
a hater, A hater, I think is the football or
the sports term for it's used as flippantly as racist
(06:20):
is used, And the truth is there's very few haters
and there's very few racists.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I think.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
I don't know, byer, can you think of a better way,
Like why do we use this the hater thing that
it's become so synonymous with any sort of what could
be constructive criticism or negative analysis.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (06:38):
I don't know if it's just the easy way out
or people just feel that their accomplishments aren't being viewed
and it's only a negative storyline. Maybe that's a portion
of it. It also just seems to be a lot
easier just to say that they're haters.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
It's a good call. They're haters, their haters. The other
part that's interesting about Lamar is he's remarkable. He's the
best running quarterback ever. He's been putting good systems run
but he's so elusive. He's amazing, and he does throw
a great ball downfield and he's a better version of
(07:18):
what he used to be. Clearly a much better pro
quarterback than Ay would have thought two MVPs. But I
don't know anybody who thinks he's one of the elite
actual quarterbacks in the NFL. I guess Tom Brady really
likes Simon, likes how he does what he does, but like,
if you have to go win a game and you
got eighty yards to go, are you taking him? Or
Josh Allen, are you taking him? Or Pat Mahomes are
you taking him? Or kind of go through some of
(07:40):
the quarterbacks and his skill set. You would think normally
you would take him because he can run and he
can throw it. But for whatever reason, he hasn't worked
out of such in the playoffs, and I think that
requires some amount of analysis, and not all analysis is
going to be, Hey, you're awesome, it's not you. Sometimes
it is you, sometimes it is you. Are we bothered
(08:04):
by the Jesus thing? He does? Specifically said not to
compare myself to Jesus, but that was that almost feels
like a hey, no disrespect something disrespectful is going to
come out him.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
I mean, he said he used the Jesus thing, and
I'm not offended by that, but but I think that
maybe where he goes a little too far is what
he says next, and that he's not going to let
this distract him from his purpose or whatever. So to
compare Lamar Jackson, quarterback of the Raven's purpose of winning
a Super Bowl to what Jesus's purpose was, I think
(08:38):
that's where the comparison gets a little murky.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
No, uh yeah, did anybody ever say that Lamar wasn't
a good person. That one's weird.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
That's the thing.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
The hate that he gets has nothing to do with
him as a person or what he does for the community.
It's all football related, right.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Yes, correct, comblity because he hasn't really given us anything
negative or we don't really follow him outside of it.
I don't I get it, but I don't get it.
I think it's a I know you love to pick
on gen zers. He's a gen zer, right.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
He is.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Remember like before he signed his new contract, if you
don't love Lamar to you know, five hundred and fifty
million dollars a year, you don't love Lamar, Like, well,
that's not actually how it works, dude. But he did
get his money. And it's the it's the mentality of
if you're not completely all in on everything I doing
being great, you're a hater. I just it just wears
(09:38):
all of us out. It's like, Okay, that's a guy
who doesn't actually want to get better. Rapid Radios official

and get six or sent off plus free shipping. Hey,
you know, it's really the whole thing is super super interesting,
super interesting with Lamar Jackson, super interesting with the use
of Jesus, Like I'm not comparing myself to Jesus, but
there is sort of a Jesus element to it, right,
And man, there's the expectations of how they're going to do.
(10:24):
And with all of this with the NFL, we have
the exact opposite opinion of Lamar as we do of
Pat Mahomes, which is Pat Mahomes, it's going to screw around.
And I think I think Buyer said this yesterday and
it was right, which is like Pat Mahomes didn't even
have a good year last year, like by his standards,
but when it was called upon, he delivered. Laura had
(10:45):
a great year last year, and then when called upon
they couldn't deliver. That's not hatred, that's just watching football
and giving thoughts on it.

you're a professional gambler and you're losing fingers, that means
what you owed some people some money at sometime. He's
got all his fingers, so that means he's good with me.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
He joined just twenty five after the hour. This hour
will we'll we'll have it just like an open talk
about Kansas City, Baltimore. The what do you call it?
The zu Rupa complex? Is that what it's called a
zoo Rupa complex zu ropa.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
Uh complex NFL is a zou ropa phase.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Zu Ropa Zu Ropa phase. We'll have Jason lay that
out for us upcoming, because I know you're very intrigued
about an album you didn't you forgot that you two
released years and years and years ago. Here's what I
want to do, Okay, we do. We do a lot
of kind of like in group con con uh to
talk on the show, right, not as much ensemble stuff
(12:05):
as some shows, more than other shows. But I do
value all of our opinions because we look at different
things and have different reasons in logic behind it. So
if we go back to last year as an example, right,
the Jets were a team that everybody kind of wondered about.
There were some other teams as well, and you know,
I think there were higher hopes for the for the Steelers,
(12:28):
then they end up end up playing out. The Giants
were obviously a massive disappointment after missing the playoffs the
year before. The Eagles fell apart. The Lions were surprised.
The Vikings were doing well until Kirk Cousins got hurt.
The Bears most people thought would be bad. The Panthers
were way worse than anybody could have thought. The NFC
(12:52):
West was about on par with what people thought, and
the AFC East it was about the Jets were better
considering they have their quarterback, better than you could have thought.
I think the Bengals because of injury that held them back,
but they still had a chance to win in the playoffs.
And of course the Colts, whatever you thought of them,
(13:14):
you didn't think that Gardner Minshew would be their quarterback,
and yet they still had a good, solid year with them.
The Titans, on the other hand, fired their head coach,
which was a head scratch to me. The point is
every year there's a team that we think is going
to be good that for whatever reason, usually injuries, sometimes dysfunction,
falls off the radar. It's like your favorite team that
(13:37):
you know is going to fail. Dan Byer, you got one.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
Go yeah, Doug, And I think when we look at this,
you could take the top ten in the NFL, But
when you really go ten, eleven, twelve deep, you're getting
into that Cowboys sort of range, and I would rather
just go top top. You know the two teams tonight,
I have the Lions in the Super Bowl, so it's
not going to be them. But I do think that
(14:04):
the off season of the San Francisco forty nine ers
is very intriguing in that, you know, Brandon Ayuk is
saying that he let this drag out a little bit longer.
So then where's Brandon Nyuk's real interest? Is it in
the money? Is in the Super Bowl? Do you just
not want to be at training camp? You know, Trent
Williams is back with the team. I felt like him
sitting out wasn't that huge deal. But as I mentioned yesterday,
(14:27):
there were some social media blurbs coming out of saying,
you know what, ownership maybe isn't really too keen on
where the forty nine ers are set up and putting
all of their eggs in one basket. And I still
to your point, Doug, that we've done this exercise on
the show of who would you take over brock Purty.
It's not a question of is brock Purty great, It's
(14:50):
just a question of, all right, where is he truly
when we're talking about quarterbacks. So, in saying all of that,
and with a roster that is the seventh oldest in
the Nation Football League, I think that you could see
that dip with the San Francisco forty nine ers. And
maybe my biggest evidence is just the Super Bowl hangover
of what happens when you lose in overtime. But I'm
(15:11):
going with San Francisco as the team that I think
could could fall off because of just of what's transpired
over the last seven months or so.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
All Right, solid, solid thoughts and dissertation.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
If that happens, If the if the forty nine ers
do fall off, and God forbid that I don't like
to make the playoffs, right, doesn't the brock party conversation
completely change because right now it's let's let's try to
win now with him under that salary because we're going
to have to pay him after the season. But if
(15:41):
they fall off, don't you just start thinking about other
options at quarterback at that point, or maybe even drafting
another quarterback.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
I don't think there's any question you think about it.
You definitely think about it. But the only the problem
with drafting one is, man, you got to hit it right.
Speaker 4 (15:59):
Man.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
You gotta have a good supporting cast. And you know,
it's the same thing that Jerry's thinking, like, we're this close.
All we got to do is not play bad in
one important game. All right, let me get to Jay
stew give me your team that you feel like is
most likely to drop off the map.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
About the map, I mentioned it yesterday. I don't know
if this is a top layer team that Dan just
laid out. But remember a year ago, nobody was talking
about the Rams. We had gone to training camp and
even the Rams officials were like, we have no idea,
what's going to happen with this team?
Speaker 1 (16:33):
They had zero idea, and.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
They played really well, surprised everybody, and had a couple
of fantasy players that everyone adored, and it was a
really feel good season. And for the most part, I
think Matthew Stafford was on the field. He stayed healthy,
and that's a big key. I heard Greg Cosel today
say that Matthew Stafford is the best quarterback in the NFC,
and he said it matter of factly, like there was
(16:56):
no discussion, like wow, that's that's quite a proclamation. The
problem is he's such a glass Joe, and I do
think that the Rams are kind of that team that
everyone is choosing this year is a team that's gonna
be good, and for whatever reason, my gut tells me
that Stafford is going to struggle to stay healthy, and
(17:17):
I think at that point everything goes downhill. As we
discussed yesterday. I guess Jimmy G is their backup. I
remember last year he almost got DeVante Adams killed on
the football field a couple times. So I don't know
if I would rely on Jimmy G if that's the case,
But the Rams are my pick for a team that
could easily kind of fall off the cliff of shirt.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
And remember, Jimmy G's not available because of his ped suspension.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
And that's why I said Jimmy G is not even
available for the first two games.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
Yeah, Sammy, I'm sorry. Good, go ahead.
Speaker 5 (17:50):
Yeah, just a little bit more on the Rams as well,
because we touched on this yesterday. They are shuffling their
offensive line in the season without Aaron Donald. On defense,
I mean, I mean, it's it's much more. It feels
like they're losing like three players on the defensive line
without Aaron Donald, like truly, like you're losing Aaron Donald.
Then you're losing the guy that you would normally double team,
(18:12):
and then you're also losing the guy that you would
probably triple team if you could, so, so losing Aaron
Donald is a big deal. Darius Williams, a cornerback, was
just placed on injured reserve, So you're coming in shorthanded
on defense, and for as much as Puka Akua emerged,
you know, last season, and you have Cooper Cups now
(18:35):
thirty one, a red zone threat for them. Yeah, I
have I have some questions about the Rams.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
I think you have some legitimate questions about the Rooms.
I thought they could be a surprise team. And then
Jase two things the opposite of them. I Sam, do
you have a team you think of fall?
Speaker 3 (18:51):
If I had to pick a team, I guess this
is a tough one for me. I guess it'd go
with the Eagles for a number of reasons. They had
that you know that really lackadaisical end to their finish
last season where they were ten to one, they ended
up finishing I think like eleven and six or you know,
something like that. And you know, Jason Kelsey has retired.
Jalen Hurts has been banged up through his you know,
(19:13):
time in the NFL. You know, you never know if
he could suffer an injury. Fans are a little frustrated
with Nick Sirianni. They are in year two of both
their I believe if correct me If I'm wrong, here, guys,
their offensive and defensive coordinators are going to their second
year after that. Great, weren't they all like hired away?
Weren't they?
Speaker 5 (19:31):
The Eagles are new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Okay,
so okay, so yes, Kelly Moore and Fango Okay, so yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
There there you go. So who knows if those schemes
will translate. I'll go with the Eagles as my pick.
They could fall off.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Kellen Moore, by the way, I two years ago or
maybe three years ago, wasn't he like the the next
the head coach in waiting? Yes, in Dallas.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
Yes, I thought they should have fired McCary dorothy after
the first year and hired him.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Yes, just so you wouldn't leave.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
It could turn out that the Cowboys and Jerry Jones,
who he spoke about earlier in the show, maybe they
were right about Kellen Moore. I mean, that season lasher
was a disaster. You can't really blame him completely because
Herbert was was banged up.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
But if he doesn't do great before he was banged up,
Herbert didn't he like lose a lung or something?
Speaker 2 (20:23):
No?
Speaker 1 (20:23):
No, yeah, but he broke a finger, right, he just
a finger. The Lung was lost as well. But they
but they weren't. They weren't killing it. The offense was
kind of clunky anyway, to be honest.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Can I just clarify something? So after the Eagles Super
Bowl run, didn't they get both their offensive coordinator and defense?
Speaker 5 (20:43):
They were hired away, right, Jonathan Gannon went to the Cardinals,
Shane Stikeen went.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
And then so then they had one year under the
new guys and then they were fired. Yeah, Brian Johnson
was did you watch their offense last year?
Speaker 2 (20:54):
No?
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Yeah, no, I mean listen, they were ten and one
then they fell off the map.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
So that was part of the disconnect on offerites was
Brian Johnson, Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
So they're starting over again with new coros and DC.
So yeah, so who knows they're unstable right now?
Speaker 1 (21:09):
I think, yeah, okay, I'm gonna give mine and this one.
I don't think it's going to happen, but I think
it very much could happen because they've been sitting there
teetering on getting too a Super Bowl for the last
couple of years and that's all of our expectations. But
what about the Buffalo Bills, right, mm hmm.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
You know, like.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Two of their top wide receivers gone from last year.
The defense isn't as good as it used to be,
They've never really figured out the running game. Still Josh
Allen running the football, and that division is really really good,
really good. Granted, I don't think the Patriots are particularly good,
but I do think the Jets are good, and I
do think the Dolphins are good, and the Bills they
(21:58):
just they're very depended upon Josh Allen and when he's
been great, they're great. When he's just below average there,
below average.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
Yes, And I think it's a good pick. I feel
it's going to be additioned by some subtraction without Steffan
Diggs there. But to your point, Doug, something I mentioned earlier,
Bills are also the oldest team in the NFL. And
there was a story that surfaced yesterday that was an
unbelievable feel good story yesterday, I believe it was yesterday.
(22:26):
DeMar Hamlin going to make his first start since suffering
cardiac arrest this week against the Cardinals. That is awesome.
But if we're sitting here talking football, Damar Hamlin was
available Week one of last year and was inactive. So
what you're saying is is you had a guy who
played sparingly last year and you actually had every reason
(22:47):
to play him because of the story that he was,
but you deemed him not good enough. Now you are
starting him at free safety for the season. So what
does that say about your safety position?
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Right?
Speaker 5 (23:00):
Like, if Damar Hamlin, if you would have started last
year in Week one, what an amazing story after what
we had seen transpire a year and a half ago.
But he didn't, and he was inactive for a lot
of games. I don't know, he played in like five
games last year, maybe give or take. But now he's
gonna be starting for them, and we get wrapped up
in the great story of it. But if you're a
(23:21):
Bills fan, last year, Sean McDermott and that defense kind
of determined you know what, Damar's not't even good enough
to be active on game days. Now he's going to
be starting in the secondary.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
That one strikes me as odd as well.
Speaker 5 (23:32):
Yeah, there's a lot their wide receiving corps. They drafted
Kean Coleman in the second round, but I mean it's
Matt Collins, Curtis Samuel and Khalil Shakir. Shakie's the one
with the rapport with with Alan Dalton Kin Cage should
have a huge year. But yeah, there are questions with Buffalo.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
Was Buffalo half of Motown to Showtown a Snowtown? It
was half of Motown to Snowtown last.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
Hour, Showtown would be the Raiders, always think, right, well,
Snowtom is also the Raiders because of Vegas and cocaine,
but that's completely different. I was just thinking it doesn't
really snow much in Vegas.
Speaker 1 (24:07):
I thought cocaine's more Miami.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
That could be as well.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
If you want to do that, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
Have you guys ever seen cocaine in person?
Speaker 7 (24:14):
No? Not me.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
I know, I know Sam every night. I never I'm
being completely honest here. I've never done cocaine in my life.
I think I've seen it before at a party you
saw the time ago. Yeah, I saw it, But why
does that mean party with you? Just I just I'm
just interested white powder.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
There was somebody somebody's trying to tell me. It's like, yeah,
I was at this party and everybody's doing cocaine, But
I don't do coke.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
Like, Okay, I swear I've never done it. I know,
I'm already tired enough. I don't need to be extra wired.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
I'm not attacking you.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
I'm just to put that on the record.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
But like, was it like a pile of cocon It
was notable and somebody somebody's cutting it up.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
It was not scarface. It was like residue sitting there.
This is like, Uh, when I went to go visit
my sister, her and she took names. Yeah, she took
me to a party. I was in high school. Cocaine,
that's responsible. It was just it was just it was
an IVY League party, so.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
I was there was no crack, real cocaine.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Yeah, sure.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
Did you tie the sweater around your neck?
Speaker 2 (25:20):
No?
Speaker 3 (25:21):
No, no, none of that. No, just visiting and it
just happened to be there.
Speaker 5 (25:25):
I am curious of what Jason Stewart was saying before
we got on the cocaine train. What were you saying, Jason?
Speaker 2 (25:30):
You saying Snowtown Motown to Snowtown. Bear with me on
this one. So you know, Friday's game is going to
be on a streaming app in Brazil.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
And it's Motown versus Snowtown. Ye.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Dan said yesterday that they need to do a game
in Alaska, and you know he's kind of making fun
of why not just go to Alaska. I'm going to
take a couple of things. I'm going to take that
a step further. I'm not going to be a one
up guy like Sam. I'm just going to take it
a step further. It's it's an additional creative piece. How
about Motown to Snowtown at the North Pole on Christmas
(26:08):
and it could be on the Hallmark streaming out. Okay,
Oldtown to Snowtown.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Definitely not a one up, of course not. My whole
point was whole presentation.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
You know, there are people in Alaska that won't never
see an NFL game. Why not do it up right there? Right,
make it, make it a big deal. You're going to Brazil,
and I know why they aren't because there's not as
much money there. But that would be better to me
play a game out there.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
I think, what about what about if I found a
happy medium. You know they play some of these preseason
games in college stadiums. What if they played like one
NFL game in a college stadium per year. There's plenty
of places that don't have NFL. They go crazy for it.
Speaker 5 (26:50):
I no offense to Alaska, but they really have nothing.
So I feel like if you're like an LSU fan
and when the Saints had to play in Baton Rouge,
it just didn't have that same feel. I mean, are
you saying like they should go to a lot or
something like, Sure, maybe there's a bunch of brock those
fans pick out.
Speaker 1 (27:10):
I mean, it would be incredible, sell up, pick out
the you know, there's six at sixteen best sites, non
NFL sites that don't have go to the states, states
or areas that don't have an NFL team. Right, Why
can't the Texans play at Daryl Royal Stadium, you know,
but at der Royal Stadium at the University of Texas. Yeah,
(27:32):
that would be cool.
Speaker 5 (27:33):
If you had a rivalry with the Cowboys that you could,
you know, make it your own red River rival that.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
Would be amazing. NFL and play it there.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
Every year you play it there, that would be unique.
That would be something different. I don't know if I
would love it, but I would. I would definitely appreciate
the effort of the NFL doing something like that.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
I'm with you. I've often thought they should change the
divisions and get you know, get Baltimore in and Washington
the state division, et cetera, et cetera, Jets and the
Giants the same division. I still think that's the way.
The problem is the NFC East is so historic and
people just struggle to get away.
Speaker 5 (28:08):
Well yeah, well that's you want to talk about bending
over backwards for the Cowboys. There's no reason for the
Cowboys to be in the NFC East. But there's every
reason for the Cowboys to be in the NFC East.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
When they didn't.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
Realignment, it made no sense. Yeah, zero sense. But because
of the Cowboys, they get Yeah, they get that aspect.
They could just play with the extra game. You could
have played all these rivalries. You know, my whole thing about.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
But I'm with you. I don't know why they don't
do it. Unbelievab will run business, but this is a
this is a flaw. The flaw. Rapid Radios insta push

just pat of my liquid death here during the break
(29:42):
and just I was rushing and that's what happened. I rushed,
got hiccups, Ben bol in a second. First, so let's
talk about the cowboys.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
Let's talk about the cowboys. Why, Well, because they're the cowboys,
being a cowboy.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Not about the cowboys.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
Because they're the cowboys and we talk about the Cowboys,
is of the Cowboys? Got it good? So Stephen A. Smith?
Who Look, I don't throw around the word hater the
way others do, but I think we can all say
that Steven A. Smith is a Cowboys hater. You guys
all good with that. I don't think anybody's in denial there.
(30:29):
Here's Jerry Jones when he was asked on Steve A.
Smith's podcast what he thinks of the criticism of himself.
Speaker 7 (30:36):
I feel a lot better than some of the critiques
that maybe I'm getting more than they are, but I'm
sensitive to the frankly a little surprised. I'm surprised that
it isn't more apparent to fans that we put an
(30:56):
outstanding team together. I think the team is in better
shape to roll than it was last year. I am
a pleaser. It bothers the hell out of me to
really get critiqued and criticized, especially if they're getting there
the Red Maiden and they're getting in there where I'm
(31:17):
double sensitive about it. But there's not many things about
the Cowboys that I'm not sensitive about.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Yeah, So again, we all hear different things when people speak,
and Dan Byron, I'm interested in what you hear, because
what I hear is what I actually said earlier this week,
which is, hey, you know, I get that the Cowboys
choke every year in the playoffs. I enjoy it just
(31:45):
as much as anybody else. On the other hand, what
NFL people will all say, and we'll say mostly as
Fansas Cowboys have a really good team, they have really
good players. And Jerry's point is, and it's a pretty
good one, which is like, hey, we've gotten better and
better and better. I think we're a better team than
this year than last year. We have this consecutive streak
of double digit win seasons. We've built a consistent winner,
(32:09):
and nobody says we don't have good players. So in
terms of doing my job, I've done my job. I
continue to do my job. I'll continue to do my job.
And instead, we're very results oriented. And if you don't
win a Super Bowl or the Cowboys do come up short,
somehow Jerry's not doing the best he can, which I
don't think. I again, I actually think there's some unfair criticism.
(32:30):
Do I love Mike McCarthy as a coach. I don't,
But I also know that you know, like if you're
gonna fire him? Who are you gonna hire? I would
have hired Belichick. I'm not in love with with Dak Prescott,
but I know the reason they hold on Dak Prescott,
and Jerry Jones said it is man, there's a lot
of other guys out there that are just guys. So
(32:50):
what I heard was, Hey, like, what are you criticizing
me for? Like I put together a really good team.
Everybody says that. Everybody says we got good talent, get
to the playoffs and we lose, and suddenly I'm not
doing my job. That's what I heard.
Speaker 5 (33:04):
What did you say, Well, I'll just say this to
your point. And I think that's why Jerry is playing
this game with Dak Prescott because in a way, he's
putting the blame on him, and he's putting the blame
on Mike McCarthy, Like, what else do I have to
do to produce a winner? It's not for you guys
to perform in these situations, which actually makes sense if
(33:28):
that's what Jerry is thinking. I think what people look
at and say is, listen, we're not the Jacksonville Jaguars
where maybe you have a great season, then you come
back and you have a disappointment the last year. We're
not them, We're not the Tennessee Titans who are in
the middle of a rebuild. And he's right, but he
(33:48):
also has to realize, is that's why they're the Dallas Cowboys.
It's the you know, you know, this close to where
you grow up. They don't hang Final four banners, they
hang national championships. Comes with a territory.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (34:04):
So so that's the part that Jerry understands. Like in
his world, I think it all makes sense and his
comments make sense, but I just don't think that that's
the world that we live in as football fans and
NFL fans.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
I think it's really really good, very fair point. I
still think a little bit of his over the top
in that we blame him for things that you know,
it's like, what do you want.
Speaker 5 (34:28):
Me to do?
Speaker 1 (34:29):
Like I got but sure, but it's you're you're saying
it's like it's a completely different scaling. You of the Cowboys.
Can't say your America's team can't be worth ten billion dollars,
you know, can't talk about all these things control the
NFL and then you never show up big in the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (34:43):
I'll say this like as a Milwaukee Bucks fan, Okay,
something has been lost over the last couple of years
where you just are are throwing money at guys, signing
guys to ten days, waiting for a veteran to get
waived and then you'll sign them and and it looks
like you're doing a lot, but are you really doing
what is best for your organization. You can sign all
(35:04):
the players you want or make the trades all you want,
but if you don't have a cohesive unit, the GM says, look,
I've given you all of these great ingredients, you know,
but you know, do you really do you? You know, do
you really want marinera sauce on your steak? Like you
know you love Marinara, you love steak. And if it's
not working, goes back to I guess to the you know,
(35:26):
pick the groceries for Bill Parcells sort of thing. Like
I think Jerry Jones has this laundry list of success
of draft picks and signings and what they've done, but
if it's not translating to wins, he's kind of passing
the buck and saying, look, I've provided you with everything
that's your you know, your fault for not making you work,
Steck got leave show.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
You're on Fox Sports Radio, and let's talk some more
NFL as we're getting ready for kickoff. Man, it's finally here.
The NFL season upon us, and Ben Bullen joins us
as he has for the last couple of years. Of course,
rights for the Boston Globe covers not just the Patriots,
the entire National Football League. But it is really interesting
right the end of the Patriots dynasty and where we
(36:07):
are now with this team. Give me your sense of
Drowd Mayo and how he's been trying to fill those
unfillable shoes.
Speaker 4 (36:17):
Yeah, I get, I'll get Drawed Mayo a lot of credit.
And excuse my voice here, Doug dealing with a little
something here. But Drowd Mayo has definitely tried to be
his own man. He's not trying to be Bill Belichick.
One thing that's interesting is you assume that Drowd Mayo,
a thirty eight year old former player, he'll be like
a player's coach. He hates that label. He says, you
(36:40):
know that means the players are in the locker room,
and he Drowd Mayo wants to try to bring a
little more disciplined than maybe what people expect like I
thought the Patriots training camp. You know, there's a lot
of rules that the NFL puts on them for how
much contact they can have and how much they can practice,
but it's still I thought Drowd Mayo worked in pretty hard,
and it showed up towards the end of camp when
(37:00):
they actually had some injuries on the offensive line and
then the tight end room, and you're wondering if maybe
Trod Mayo worked them a little too hard. But look,
Drod Mayo, he's a rookie head coach, and this is
the first time that he's dealing with all kinds of issues,
most notably being the guy to speak to reporters every day.
And he's had some mixed messages. He's had a few
(37:21):
times already this year where he's had to stick his
foot in his mouth. Right after he was hired, he
went on the radio and said we're going to burn
some cash, and then the Patriots didn't go out and
spend that much money in free agency. At the end
of training camp, he's telling us this is a pure competition.
This is a pure competition, and Drake may has played better.
And then he names Jacoby Brissett the starting quarterback and
(37:42):
in the process doesn't show a whole lot of support
for Jacoby Brissett as his starter. So he's learning as
he goes along, no question. But you know, I guess
the Crafts and the Patriots have a lot of faith
in him being a former player, always one of the
smartest players on defense, being more of the new generation
(38:05):
kind of coach who can connect with players but also
get results on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
So why wouldn't he start Drake May? Is it just
he doesn't he wants to put him in. He doesn't
want to have to pull him out, you know, And
it's easier for a guy who's a veteran kind of
spot starter to be taken out. Like what's the logic
behind it?
Speaker 4 (38:26):
Yeah, I think that's some of it. You don't want
to have exactly. You don't want to see Drake May
potentially lose confidence and that have to take him out
of the lineup. To me, there's just too much risk,
not too much downside, not enough upside to starting Drake
May in the week one. You don't get any bonus
points for Drake May starting Week one or you know,
starting seventeen games this season. And it comes down to
(38:48):
the fact that the personnel around him is a mess.
I think Drake May could probably go out there right
now and hold his own and learn on the fly
and learn through mistakes and show some of that athleticism them.
You know, his scrambling ability is a big guy too.
But the Patriots are a mess, the offensive line especially.
We saw it in the last preseason game against Washington,
(39:09):
where guys were running into each other. Drake May was
getting stepped on, losing a shoe during his dropbacks. The
left tackle was flagged three times for a legal formation
for lining up too far off the line of scrimmage.
And you don't want Drake May going out there early
in the season and getting hurt and taking shots. And
(39:29):
you don't know what they have at receiver. You don't
know what they have on the offensive line. The Patriots
are just not ready for a rookie quarterback right now.
So you signed Jacoby Brissett for a reason. He's your caretaker,
he's your mentor. He's a guy who can start the season.
The offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt hand picked Jacoby Brissette.
That's his guy. Let Jacoby Brissett kind of play his
(39:50):
way out of the job before Drake May takes over.
I mean, there's there's little doubt that Drake May is
going to see the field a lot this year, but
Week one, the team around him is just not ready.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Let's talk some Jets. Interesting team. Aaron Rodgers back only
four plays last year? Right, they trade for a sound Reddick.
Don't have a sound Reddick playing? That one seems to
have gone sideways. We thought last year to check out
the roster. You just had a quarterback their playoff team. Okay,
so you bring in a quarterback. He's a Hall of Famer,
but coming off in Achilles, what happens with the Jets
(40:24):
this year?
Speaker 4 (40:25):
I like the Jets. I think they're going to bounce
back Aaron Rodgers. If he were a more mobile quarterback,
I'd be concerned about him returning to, you know, a
top level of play. But he's a guy who wins
with his arm strength and by diagnosing things before the snap,
and so I think he's gonna be as sharp as ever.
He might not be MVP vintage Aaron Rodgers, but I
(40:47):
think he's still gonna be pretty dark good. And with
Garrett Wilson brief Hall, they've got some good weapons there.
On the offense for Aaron Rodgers to work with, and
I've always liked that defense. I think Robert Sala even
you know, with the issues with Hasan Reddick, now, I
think the Jets defense is still going to be really,
really good this year. So assuming Aaron Rodgers Achilles doesn't
snap like a rubber band again and that he can
(41:08):
make it through the season, I've got the Jets coming
out of the AFC East. I think, you know, I
don't know if they're going to be super Bowl contenders,
but I think they're going to be a double digit
win team with Aaron Rodgers, and I think, you know,
he's a guy who's got to wants to prove that
he's not done yet, and he wants to, you know,
erase the sour case from last year obviously with that injury.
(41:29):
So I think the Jets and Aaron Rodgers are definitely
gonna be bouncing back this year.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
Okay, Dolphins, you have twa Tongue Bailoa on a massive
new contract. I don't think that actually hits the books
until next year. Bring back Tyreek Hill. They've been a
really good regular season team that when it gets cold, obviously,
they've looked very different. What's your projections and the Dolphins
this year.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
Yeah, I've got the Dolphins missing the playoffs, taking a
step back this year. And you say they're a good
regular season team, really good from September to November. They
beat up on everyone early in the season when the
weather's nice and the conditions are good, and then when
in December and January, they've fallen apart. The last two years,
they've been really soft. I believe they're four and ten
(42:13):
the last two years in those two months, and not
just the weather causes them to freeze up, but once
they start playing the better teams. And what was that
Ravens game last year, like fifty six to nineteen, And
I see a Dolphins team that didn't make a ton
of improvements over the offseason. I think they largely brought
the same team back and they you know, obviously made
(42:33):
some change that like defensive coordinator, and we'll have some
cosmetic changes. But to me, this is still kind of
the same team, and they've been soft the last couple
of years, and so I just I don't see this
being a great year for the Dolphins. I think they
might take a little bit of a step back. Part
of that because I think they play in such a
difficult division with the Jets and the Bills. They see
(42:54):
in general is I think very very competitive this year.
So you know, proved me wrong. Dolphins go up. You
know you got to go out there and do it. Now,
we all know you can beat up on the teams
in the early months of the season, but to a
Tagabello Mike McDaniel, they've never proven that debt that they
can win the key games and win in when the
(43:14):
weather isn't always so perfect down to Miami.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
Okay, So help me help me out with this one.
If you're going to bet your savings, which are substantial,
then on one team to take down the Chiefs and THEFC.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
Who would be one team to take down the Chiefs? Nacy?
I mean, how do you not say the Cincinnati Bengals.
They've they've been the one foil for the Chiefs the
last few years they played him. They beat him in
that one AFC Championship game to go to the Super Bowl,
and then came to the next year in that rematch,
came right down to the end, and it's not for
that late hit out of bounds. Who knows if the
(43:47):
Chiefs would have even made it back to the Super Bowl.
I love Joe Burrow. I think he's tough as nails.
They've got t Higgins, They've got Jamar Chase. That's a
very motivated team this year, guys playing for contracts. Trey
interested in the pass rusher. Assuming Joe Burrow can stay healthy,
which unfortunately for him, he's now had two big injuries
in his short career. But I really like the Bengals
(44:09):
if they're one team to be able to take down
the Chiefs. And let's not forget the Houston Texans too.
I think they're loaded this year. Dj Stroud now in
a second year. They got Stefan Diggs. Will Anderson, last
year's defensive Rookie of the Year, is a fantastic player.
They got the pass rusher from Minnesota. Named this case
me right now. But I think the Houston has just
(44:29):
been loading up on talent, so I definitely think the
Chiefs are gonna have a very difficult time getting back
to that third straight Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
I think everyone loves Jordan Love and the fact that
he showed himself to be a viable starting quarterback, but
now he's the highest paid guy in the sport.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
That's a lot.
Speaker 1 (44:50):
And as much as he had some great performances in
his first year as a starter, there was also some duds.
What does Jordan Love do this year?
Speaker 4 (45:00):
Yeah, Jordan Love was a real Jekyll and Hyde player
last year. The first eight ten games of the season,
the general manager was kind of challenging him, saying, you
know this is this is a time now to make
it move. And sure enough he did, and his second
half of the season was phenomenal and they went in
the playoffs, they won a game, almost almost made it
to the NFC Championship game. So you gotta love how
(45:22):
Jordan Love part in the pun there, but you got
to love how he improved throughout the season and got
certainly after getting his speed established a little bit. I
like the Packers this year. Only problem is I think
their division is going to be very difficult. The Lions,
I think are coming back to, you know, with a
vengeance to try to make that Super Bowl. The Bears
are gonna be much better now with with Caleb Williams
(45:43):
and all the talent that they put around him, and
even the Vikings. I know they have Sam Darnold and
not JJ McCarthy, but I think Kevin O'Connell is a
terrific coach. They built a good team other than the quarterback,
and so the Vikings are going to be no pushovers either.
So I think that that's going to be a difficult
challenge for the Packers, just just having six games in
the division where it's going to be a real black
and blue division again in the NFC North. But certainly
(46:06):
I have the Packers as a playoff team, and you know,
you know, I talked about how the Dolphins they haven't
been there and done it. You know, Jordan Love went
there and did it last year. He won big games
in December, went on the road in the playoffs, won
a big game. So Jordan Love has certainly shown that
he's got some metal already.
Speaker 1 (46:23):
What happens to the Cowboys, Jerry Jones.
Speaker 4 (46:27):
Is certainly putting a lot of pressure on everyone down there.
Mike McCarthy's in his last season of his contract, Dak
Prescott is going into his contract here. Obviously, Michael Parsons
didn't get a deal. He's playing for a contract. Even
the defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer, they signed him on just
a one year deal. So to me, it could turn
out pretty well, and I think the Cowboys will win
(46:49):
double digit games and get back to the playoffs. But man,
the pressure of the situation could just force that team
to implode spectacularly, as things sometimes we'll do in Dallas
under Jerry Jones. But you know, with Dak Prescott thunder center,
with Ceedee Lamb at wide receiver, Michael Parsons, I mean,
they still have a lot of high end talent in Dallas.
So you know, that's a team that I think you
(47:12):
have to put in the playoff mix. But again, let's
see improve it. Let's see Dak Prescott win some games
in the playoffs. Now, you know, ultimately, that's still a
franchise that I don't think it's a you know, I
don't think it's an accident that they keep coming up
short in January. That's a team that needs to build
up some more mental toughness.
Speaker 1 (47:32):
So good, It's so good to have you back, Ben,
because you're scared of nothing. You tell it like it
is and you have a great wealth of knowledge. Really
appreciate you join us. I'll look forward to tonight, then
Friday night's game, then Sunday and then Monday. We'll talk
to you next week. Thanks for our guests on Fox
Sports Radio all right, thanks a lot, Doug
