Speaker 3 (00:54):
We got a lot to get to today, a lot,
and I think some of it's gonna be looking back
at last night, some be looking forward to today. But man,
last night was fun. I just I enjoyed a great deal.
I'm sure Jay Stu is gonna pick it apart and
(01:14):
be a curmudgeon about it. And I'm guessing Dan is
laughing and smiling because you know, he has this fantasy pod.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
He knows all this stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Kind of cold and it's interesting on just how it's
always like you make predictions about things, and I wonder
how much of them came to play. But for me,
like I don't know to flip on a game, know
what time it's coming on. It's also different now I'm
Central time zone, just different than West Coast time zone.
Some of it good, some of it bad. But it
was here in northeastern Wisconsin. We had kind of a
(01:45):
front go through like a day and a half ago,
so it was windy and rainy.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
It just felt like football season.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
I was like, yeah, And then you had the familiarity
of not just Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
But they also played to.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Their sky report, right, Like mahomes first half interception was
just him being loose with the football. He gave the
Ravens another opportunity. And here's the like the frustration with
Collinsworth as a broadcaster. Collinsworth does calls a hell of
a game, but his lack of any sort of desire
(02:22):
to give very reasonable. Criticism of Mahomes is weird. Like
that last throw the Mahomes had that we crossed his body.
Had he simply planned his feet and felt pump faked
and thrown the football to the left, the Chiefs win
going away. Instead, he gets the ball deflected, great play
by the defenses. He's off balance, makes the throw, can't
(02:44):
stop himself, throws it into a deflection and ends up
catching his own football. And the Ravens give us everything
we wanted, which was you know, first, you know, last play,
four seconds to go, scramble round, throw it up back
of the end zone. Catch, looked like he was in
and then he just a tow out of bounds. Couldn't
have been at any better for the league. But if
(03:05):
you were to give a scattering report on Pat Mahomes,
you would have said, incredibly talented, finds a way to
win games. He'll drive you crazy because for whatever reason,
he'll just make a careless or don't give a you
know what mistake. But you want to be careful how
much you reel in those mistakes, because that creativity allows
him to be great. And the Chiefs as a team
(03:27):
last couple of years kind of play with their food right,
they have a big lead, should put them away. Don't
to drop touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Lamar Jackson, we were told
last year, whole new offense. This year added Derrick Henry.
Want to give him so he doesn't have to run.
He has somebody else who can run. But Dereck Henry
couldn't get going. And Lamar Jackson was spectacular. And when
people say Lamar can't throw, it doesn't mean he can't throw.
(03:48):
It just means that on the random second down when
he guys has a guy running wide open to the
end zone, sometimes he'll airmail it. And he does that
a higher percentage of time than anybody else who's a
quality starting quarterback in the NFL. On the other hand,
he's a freaker athlete than anybody who's ever started in
the NFL, and he can throw some unbelievable footballs. I
(04:09):
thought that game played right to its stereotype, including you know,
obviously some missed a miss. Uh, it's not off sides,
it's an illegal procedure with the with the Chiefs right
tackle being in the backfield. There's other thoughts where the
Chiefs get away with holding it home. They get away
with murder. Lamar Jackson spectacle, their best town in the field,
(04:31):
but he's just not a consistent thrower. Pat Mahomes plays
with his food, But at the end of the game,
you'd much rather have Pat Mahomes than anybody else. And
as as careless as he can be in the they
can be. You tell me who's going to actually beat
them when they come to the playoffs. I don't know
if anybody can. Did I miss anything? Dan Byer, Did
I miss anything? Jason Stewart? Did I miss anything?
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Chris Purpfett.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
I hope so, because it sicks after Okay, here's the
funny thing I thought of last night was there was
something that happened in the game that I thought that
we would surely talk about today. And I don't think
it was going to be the national talk, but I
thought that it definitely would be a topic of conversation.
(05:15):
And we fell so quickly back into football mode after
sixty minutes of Game one of the twenty twenty four season,
because we're talking about the greatness of the Chiefs, We're
talking about Lamar Jackson and his ability or inability to
make the throws when he needed But did you guys
notice the kickoffs the Chiefs. They just kicked it out
(05:37):
of the end zone, which is something that Sean Payton
brought up throughout the throughout the preseason. He did not
think that the thirty yard line advancement was going to
deter teams from doing so. And Andy Reid showed it
last night. Harrison Bucker just kicked it out of the
end zone in boom and Justin Tucker may not be
Justin Tucker anymore, but that would be for a different day.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
I think that, I know, I actually think today is
that day. And it's interesting because I was sitting with
my boss, with Josh Moon, and he was we were
talking about or he was on the phone with me
and he was doing a fantasy draft whatever and he
was drafting a kicker and I was like, tell me,
you're in the last round. He's like, oh, I'm in
the second last round. I'm to take Harrison Butcher. I
was like, well, that's a great pick.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
He's a good He's He's like, oh, wait, I got
Justin Tucker. I was like, I don't. Is Justin Tucker
still awesome? And last night he was not.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
And he's been the best kicker in the league up
until the past couple of years, and it did feel
like last night was a Hey, if you don't pay
attention to these things, you may not realize that Justin
Tucker still really good, but not what he used to be.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah, those are those are kind of my minor takeaways,
you know, from from what I thought could be a
topic of discussion, but it ends up just to me
just going back to Lamar, and I felt like I've
been a Lamar defender and I don't know how last
night it would be is a tough night for the
people in my camp. You take dump offs all the
(07:02):
way down the field, so it does appear that you're
moving down the field, but the Chiefs are kind of
letting him have it. They couldn't get after him. Lamar
looked great in eluding that pressure, but when he needed
to make the throw in the field was shrunk to
twenty yards and yeah, you don't have any timeout so
you can't run. It was Yeah, that was that was tough.
(07:25):
That was tough for my camp. That says, yeah, no, Lamar,
Lamar as he is is fine. You can win a
Super Bowl. You just have to have some things go
your way, and maybe you have to have you know
your token in bounds. But the first two throws in
that scenario one that was tough, you just weren't good enough.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
I mean, it's okay, and it's okay for people to say, hey,
that's not good enough. It's just not to be considered
one of the elites of the game, and he's an
elite as run like that in a nutshell was the biggest.
He's been better than anyone thought he could be. But
(08:04):
they weren't totally wrong with their perception of Lamar Jackson,
which is like, it's really good, but man, can you
win when it really matters? Last night they could not.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
I don't even think the thought process with the two
likely throws, like Isaiah likely is a tall receiver, a
tall tight end. He's going to have a size advantage. Yeah,
take advantage, throw it up to him. But the first
one where I think we thought that Isaiah likely was
going to miss six weeks because of his shoulder injury
and was in six seconds later after the next play.
(08:36):
But on that throw, there was so much of the
end zone that is wide open that I wondered if
Lamar was just throwing it away, and then he wasn't
because he was throwing it up to Likely. But in
that position, if you would have seen him, maybe just
throw to allow Likely to come back to the pylon.
There was so much room before him where he could
have curled in and had the touchdown. So instead of
(08:58):
just overthrowing him and throwing gonna hie, because I'm gonna
throw it up high because likely he's the only one
that can get it, it ends up going over his
head and he gets pushed out of bounds and almost gets hurt.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Correct.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Correct, you gotta throw it. It's the right throws to
throw it so only he can get it. He just
airmailed it. And you know, I continue to understand, and
I Dan and I were working together at the time
when he wasn't drafted you know, by any by, even
by the Ravens in the first round.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
You know, there's all this.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Talk about it, and like, look, if you watch the tape,
you remember him against Mississippi State in his last bowl game.
He was so inaccurate, and it was inaccurate and throws
like that. He actually throws a nice deepall you know,
throws a nice de ball. It's the short underneath the
intermediate stuff where he just hasn't had the adept touch
and you kind of got to play around it. It's okay, like, look,
(09:52):
not all these guys have flaws.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
You know.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Aaron Rodgers' flaw was always he just wanted to play
backyard for fotball.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
He get out of a play too quick. Tom Brady
couldn't move.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Now, if Tom Brady was on his spot and he
got rid of it quick, but he couldn't move.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
So if you if you could.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Get to his spot and make him move, he was
not the same player. Well, Mar Jackson, he's as electric
runner as we've ever seen. And it's not that they can't
throw a football, but he just has these bouts of
inaccuracies at untimely moments, which which which undo them. Here's
Lamar Jackson when he's asked if Kansas City is a Scryptodnite,
(10:27):
you call.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Kansas City or Kryptonite who passes.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
Any my Krypta KNIGHTE is not my Kriymin Knight is
not my Kriymin Knight.
Speaker 6 (10:33):
Okay, So is that last drive get you get encouragement.
Speaker 7 (10:36):
Or is it ye get frustrated that you were two
inches short the whole game?
Speaker 5 (10:39):
Give me encouragement, you know, because I believe I got
was a fighting you know. Unfortunately, we had penalties every
time we had almost an explosive. Every time we had
an explosive, we had a penalty right after that. So
it was like it's hard to get into the groove,
you know, our offense battle and we bout a three
to four quarter. Unfortunately we don't these ugly games. We
got to overcome him, and I felt like we did
(10:59):
agree great job at that, you know, just coming down
in the red zone ten yard line wherever it was
to the last play.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
He was asked about the last catch of the game.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
I thought I was touched down, man, he was just opening,
you know what I'm saying. Thirty two and twenty was
like turning to like pursue him when he.
Speaker 7 (11:20):
Realized what the ball was going.
Speaker 5 (11:21):
So I threw out, threw what so he can like
make a play on it, just so I don't throw
it like a lone job at him to the face mask
and they turned around to pick the ball. So I
gave him give the balls so he can jump a
little bit. But I thought he did a great job
acrobatic catching. I believe it was two feet.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Down now that part, I just I can't get behind
right like then the replay was conclusive. His toe was
at the back. This is like a world's flat thing,
Like what are we actually doing here?
Speaker 2 (11:53):
All he has to say is, man.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
I mean we're like one centimeter from from going for two,
you know, and having a chance to win a game
on one play, but.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Instead, like I believe you got to like what do
you touch?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Video evidence that no one even was an Ardent Ravens
fan in their heart of hearts doesn't think was that
a bounce?
Speaker 4 (12:12):
I admit on Twitter, I had effect here, by the way,
Christophe joining the show go ahead, Chris, Yeah, I had.
Speaker 8 (12:18):
I had a moment of reaction where I'm like online
where I'm like, by rule of cool, that should be
a touchdown. But I think it's different when fans are
sitting around saying, oh that sucks that it's not a
touchdown to the players themselves afterwards, like complaining that it's
not a touchdowns, like you should know the rule. It's
clearly not a touchdown. I don't know why this is
(12:40):
up for debate at all.
Speaker 7 (12:42):
It's just they're deny it.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
Yeah, they don't want to admit they feel that they
were job by the officiating last night. Again, Lamar says,
they're not. They're kryptonite.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
What are we doing?
Speaker 3 (12:58):
You don't want to say kryptonite again? Fine, by the way,
if that's your kryptonite, somebody's calling you superman, right, sure,
yeah again, you can take any of these things and
make it a new positive. And oh yeah, by the
the numbers tell you they're your ryptonite. You're not the
same player against the Chiefs, you are against the rest.
Speaker 9 (13:17):
Of the league.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
This is and this I think their own mistakes are
what is catching up with them and make and make
them give the responses that they're giving again Zay Flowers
fumble at the goal line in allowing you know, the
Chiefs to help win that AFC championship game to last
(13:38):
night an inch away and not getting the foot in
bounds or a penalty here or a penalty there. It's
a much easier to point the finger and say, all right,
we've done all the work. It's just somebody else screwing us.
Then realizing that the last point two of that twenty
six point two marathon is probably the toughest and they
(13:59):
just aren't there yet, and there's and I don't know
if they can get there.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
There was a point when I thought that they did.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
But again, it's not a great day for my Lamar
Jackson can lead a team and win a Super Bowl
just for the that drive is everything to it. But
was that first and goal from the ten yard line
with no timeouts the kryptonite?
Speaker 7 (14:20):
Maybe? So I'll leave with much more questions than answers.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
But that that has always been my argument, and this
is you can go back to I can't remember if
we were I think we were talking about when I
was at ESPN a long time ago. It was the
I remember the two quarterbacks. It was would you rather
have Mike Vick or Carson Palmer? Mike vick er Carson
(14:46):
pomer And my argument this before Mike got in trouble,
Mark was no matter how And I love Mike Vick
like I know him as a guy. He's awesome as
a player. Like I was in college when he was
in college. There's zero human beings who were inc college
at that time who did think Mike Vick was awesome.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Right, he just jumped off the screen.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
But I said it then and I was just like, look,
end of the day, I take Carson Palmer six days
a week and twice on Sunday. Why the best thing
he does is from the pocket, and championships are one
from the pocket. And until that changes, I'm not changing.
And that's what's happened, so we can say, I mean,
they change offensive coordinators, they changed styles, they changed running backs,
(15:31):
they changed wide receivers, they've done everything, and Lamar is
still an unbelievable talent. And that's good enough against ninety
percent of the league, but not against the teams that
you need to beat to get the Super Bowl. Here's
Pat Mahomes talking about the final play of the game.
Speaker 9 (15:49):
Definitely nerve wracking. I mean just I mean, could it
look good from my angle on the sideline, But then
the first view you saw you could see the cleat.
So that's a great football team, and I'm sure we'll
see him again at some point in the playoffs. So
now we're happy with the win now and we're white
cleats next time. That's what that's my that's my advice
for him.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
That's a great line.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Here's Isaiah Likely talking about the Chiefs.
Speaker 7 (16:12):
This is probably the words the game.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
We don't play all year, so this is the best
that they got.
Speaker 7 (16:17):
A good look in the postseason.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
The Ravens do. They are bitter. Betty's about a lot
of stuff, right, Like if you ask them today, they
weren't beaten.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
They lost. They gave away the game.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
And that's to your point, Dan, that's like there there's
some accuracy to that should be pointing out. The Chiefs
drop two balls in the zone touchdown balls, but the
that's their best game. Like, I don't know. I understand
that Mahomes has the Super Bowls, so he can be
(16:52):
confident and he can give you the aw shucks and
he can give the respect to the other team. But
I also think there's something two into the mentality, and
this is why the Ravens, you know, they keep coming
up short, and they're in denial of why they keep
coming up short.
Speaker 10 (17:07):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on

DraftKings to Crown is yours? Got a little candle is
kennel box, kennle box?
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Right?
Speaker 8 (17:32):
This is three doors down, three doors down? Yeah, but
it's kryptonite. Just you know, I just knew that.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Yes, yes, I did know that that was the side.
I didn't know that. Yeah, three doors down.
Speaker 11 (17:42):
Yeah, I actually forgot this down myself.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
No, No, that's three doors down. Yeah, kryptonite is three doors down,
not this door.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
Three doors down? Do I count the first door and
I got I don't know it's three doors down.
Speaker 11 (17:51):
You're starting at door zero or door one?
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Yeah? Who did I see? I saw?
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Lincoln Park has a new lead singer. It's a chick
and she's really good. But it's just hard to tell
how to go, Like, okay, these are the same Lincoln
Park songs. It's almn they debuted last night, but with
a different lead singers.
Speaker 6 (18:08):
So odd they should call they should rename the band
of Pink and Park. It's a literation and there's a
female wead singers.
Speaker 7 (18:16):
Other controversies coming with that.
Speaker 11 (18:17):
It's just it's just hard to replace anyone.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
What are the other controversies I'm not aware of. I'm
just tell me.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
She is a scientologist and uh vouched for Danny Masterson
during his h rape trial. So there's some uh yes,
some some backlash from various people on social media.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Some other stuff.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Didn't know that Doug got THEB show here on Fox
Sports Radio. We won't get into scientology of today's show.
Speaker 6 (18:45):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
I think that'd probably be it.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
Hey, you asked for the backlash I did.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
I'm not yet.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
No, I'm not bringing backlas should you. I'm just saying
we're not going to dive in, dive in deep. That'll
be the podcast, right, we'll do the podcast. We'll do
that on the Saturday podcast.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
We don't have a Saturday podcast as you do.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
This is this is the new and improved Doug. Is
what I'm trying to point out, Dan Byer that normally
Dog I would go into the I would go into scientology.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
That's the deal with scientology. But instead I'll bringing Mark Dominick.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
You spent over twenty years in the NFL front offices
and scouting, former gentle manager of the Tampay Buccaneers.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
Okay, if we take.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
Off all of the armor and the reputation and we
just say, hey, Lamar Jackson, the player, the guy who's
done this his entire professional career. Is you you've evaluated,
you've assigned. Okay, he is a two time MVP. What
are your thoughts on Lamar the player last night?
Speaker 10 (19:42):
Well?
Speaker 12 (19:42):
I didn't expect him to run that much, right, I mean,
I think that's what everybody Vegas certainly didn't see that coming.
I didn't see that coming to lead the team in
rushing when you have Derrick Henry. I don't blame him.
I think he made good decision. Obviously, you don't get
over one hundred and twenty yards on the ground by
making forcisions in to tuck and run. Played well. I
thought he put them in a position to win. He
(20:03):
certainly went in different directions in terms of, you know,
the amount of throws, which is great to Isaiah likely
and what he was able to do as well as
putting the team unks back. There's no turnovers, which is
obviously a very big piece of the puzzle for him too.
I know he had to have the fumble, but no interceptions,
I should say so. I thought Lamar Jackson played fine.
I think they were good enough to win the game.
Unfortunately for Ravens fans, they did not. But he put
(20:25):
him in position to win against you know, a very
very talented as we see Kansas City team in Kansas City,
which is going to be hard to do for anybody.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
Okay, what about Kansas City? Where are they in comparison
to years past?
Speaker 12 (20:41):
So a couple of things. I think for the Ravens,
I think they messed up. Though, I will take a
step back on the Ravens and just say, you don't
have Derrick Henry touch the ball, you know, fourteen times
thirteen on the ground and just one catch up.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
But can we get into this discussion a little bit.
Here's the thing.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Okay, and I've I've noticed this because I'm not a
Titans fan, but I have. Maybe I'm glutton for punishment.
I've watched a lot of Titans football, and you're right,
it's not he's not your tradition running back. If you
hand it, you can't pro rate the thing like, well,
we'll give him fourteen carries to keep him fresh, whatever,
Like he needs thirty carries and what happens is usually
carry twenty one or twenty two. Now he breaks one right,
(21:19):
and it's a series of body blows, body blows, body blows,
body blows. But they have all these conflicting things, right,
Lamar is trying to prove to people he can throw.
You know, you have an offensive coordinator who's trying to prove, Okay,
like I can put Lamar in position to where he
can throw accurately. Lamar's competitive and so at the end
of it, he's just like, I want to win. I
don't trust it. He's not a great third four to
(21:41):
three sort of guy anyway. And he got Derrick Henry,
who he's kind of a one trick pony. In that
trick you got to go to the body blow action.
Like it does feel like they got a lot of
stuff and it may not all fit together.
Speaker 12 (21:51):
Yeah. I just think that they got caught up and
throwing the ball so much against Kansas City. Maybe they
looked at the secondary and said, well, you know, they're
not very good. They're going to struggle because it's La
Jerry Speed not there. So we believe that it's going
to be a battle for them. That's going to be
they're not gonna be able to handle us. But to
go into the game against Kansas City when you have
and I agree with one hundred percent on Dereck Henry,
he's got to I think he's got to have twenty
two to twenty five touches and he'll break one big one.
(22:14):
He says, that's what he does. It's what he's done
his whole career. And I think it's what he would
have done last night, and they didn't do that instead.
The way I looked at it, and again, I think
the Ravens are really good. I still think, as I've
said with you guys, I think they have a chance
to still you know, I was still Lombardi or at
least be at the game, and so I think they're
that talented of a team. But when you look at
the big picture, to your point, Doug, you throw the
(22:35):
ball forty one times and Lamar Jackson's run sixteen, which
really you would probably say thirteen of those were probably
designed pass plays. You're going to roll Lamar Jackson out
there fifty five times to throw the ball to beat
the Chiefs. I just don't think that's the right recipe.
I think you got to, you know, wear them out,
make those corners, tackles, get the ball outside of Derrick
Henry's tosses, and make those guys really have to work
(22:56):
for it. I think that's how you have to beat
the Kansas City Chiefs. He didn't work out for them night,
but uh, that's where I think that they messed up.
And if you're going to trade or if you're going
to add Derrick Henry, I think you need to see
twenty two touches next week.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Okay, what about the Chiefs. What's your session?
Speaker 7 (23:13):
Yeah, the Chiefs.
Speaker 10 (23:14):
You know.
Speaker 12 (23:14):
The interesting thing for me was when it was all
said and done and I looked at the line score
or the box score, you know, I'm looking at Isaiah Pacheco, going,
see he only averaged three yards to carry. It seems
so much better than that. Like, I felt like he
was such a And maybe it was the catches, but
I thought Pacheco looked better even though the average was
three yards per attempt. They felt like they were very good.
Attempts are very good, uh runs, you know, And I
(23:36):
think that that's Uh, that was interesting because I really
thought when I and I don't usually I never look
at the box score in the game. Usually I don't
look at it till the next day when I looked
opened up, I thought we was gonna be like four
point two four point four yards per carry. It was
only three zero three point zero, So that was surprising.
I mean, Rice looks fantastic, as I think everybody kind
of predicted or hoped to see that he would do
(23:57):
uh in Mahomes obviously, besides the interception, just keeps making plays.
The nice thing for them, I think that really stood
out was that they were able to spread the ball
around so much. You know it, two different guys make catches,
getting them involved. And there were a lot of plays
of those chunk plays, right, whether it was in the
run game with Worthy and his beautiful run. But then
you get your rights as over twenty yard play Kelsey did,
(24:19):
Worthy did, just you know, Watson did, Checko did. So
they all had twenty yard chunk plays and I think
that was the biggest difference of the two teams.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Trader. That's the
voice of Mark Dominic, who joins us here on the
Doug Gallam Show. Of course, Mark's former gentlem manager of
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All right, tonight we have the
Green Bay Packers taken on the Philadelphi Eagles. Okay, so
last year the Eagles New OC New DC start out
ten to zero, but didn't feel right and doesn't finish well.
Now we go another new new DC, new OC and
(24:49):
they add in Saquon Barkley. Okay, same question, right, Like,
you have a Derrick Henry Saquon Barkley a little different,
he catched out of the backfield.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
What do you feel like the Eagles offense should look
like tonight?
Speaker 12 (25:01):
Yeah? I think I think that this one feels like
it's going to be a little more bound. I think
that Barkley will get sixteen to eighteen touches because I
think he's different and they're going to want to try to,
you know, salag him through the season. I think Derrick
Henry just he just realized that it's a ramrod and
you just keeps throwing it against the wall. I think
in this one, I think with Sakwe Barkley, I think
it's gonna be more than fifteen to seventeen eighteen touches
(25:21):
or carries, and then I think you're going to see
them kind of blended together with this passing game and
be able to you know, the nice thing is we
all know what the Eagles is. They've got so many
options and that's going to be a really nice thing
for I think Jalen Hurst, and I think it's going
to be a tricky thing not to get caught up
in that because I think they just got to play
smart football. But when you've got DeVante Smith, obviously, I
don't know what John Dobson's going to do, but A J. Brown,
(25:42):
we know that those guys are going to get their touches.
With Goddard, I just think that the Barkley's probably going
to get again sixteen to eighteen touches. I think that's
the right thing in terms of carries and another four
or five catches. That's what I would want out of him,
and that's what I expect the Eagles to do. I
think it's going to be a great game because, like
I said last week and then what I said this week,
is the game we have on Thursday night and the
(26:03):
game we have on Friday, and that could end up
being the AFC and NFC championship teams. These teams are
that good. I'm very excited to see what the Packers
roll out on defense with Jeff Hapley at the new
defensive coordinator. I think that's going to be a tremendously
different feel and I think that's gonna be the one
thing I want to watch more out of Green Bay
than their offense is what if their defense look like
under a new coordinators Halfley.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
What's his reputation?
Speaker 12 (26:25):
Well, I had him in Tampa. He was our DV
coach back in the day before he went off and
obviously came the head coach of Boston College. He is
known for energy and he is known to he's a
very intelligent coach. You know, players are going to feel
like they're getting better and the Jeff Hapley, he's this,
He's got a really good charisma. He knows how to
(26:45):
interject to different players at different levels. And I think
that's really a key part of being a great head
coach or being a good positional coach. It's how do
you react to the different people within the building because
they're coming from different areas of life. Jeff is really
good at working through that and kind of figuring out
how to community with each level to make sure that
they're getting the best they can. And so that's going
to be interesting to see how do all these high picks,
(27:06):
these draft picks, these high picks on defense, how do
they perform tonight when they have a chance to be
on stage in this new system which I think is
going to be a much more aggressive system. It's going
to have some you know, you're gonna they're gonna be
much more aggressive. They're going to be you know, coming
downhill a lot more so. There's gonna be opportunities. It's
just that Jalen Hurts has to you know, be able
to cash in on them. But Zager McKenny I think
(27:27):
is big, Giret Vanderstein healthy, He's gonna be a big piece.
But again, I want to see uh this defense because
I think it's going to be a much better defense
than we saw last year.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
Jamar Chase told reporters today that he believes he's close
to reaching a long term agreement with the Bengals, but
he's also willing to play on his current contract if
one's not reached. He's been limited in practice, he's been
a hold in during training camp. Do you believe they
get this done before the first step, Doug.
Speaker 12 (27:56):
It's a great question. My gut is that he's questionable,
that he doesn't they're going to want to see no one.
I'm going to guess the Brown family isn't going to
give him the deal until he's you know, he shoots
up and plays in the game, maybe is what is
the right answer. I mean, we're seeing Pat Farremouth get
a deal today with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Spencer Brown got
a deal today with the Buffalo Bills. So we're seeing
(28:17):
clubs kind of good deals done at the club level,
Like Firemouth deals four years forty eight million less twelve
twelve and change a year. That's not blowing out the
market at all. And I think that's where you look
at it and say, all right, So then Firemouth wanted
to get a deal with the club, and that's usually
where the clubs take advantage these guys right before the
regular season starts. Can I get a player to take
a deal that's much more club friendly? I think those
(28:38):
two guys got one of those. I don't think Jamar
Chase is going to get that lucky, so I think
they're going to make him play another week.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
What do you think is that is the team that's
most interesting to you? Like, there's a lot of we
went through. There's so many different storylines. I have one
in mind.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
What's yours that the team's most interesting you?
Speaker 12 (28:57):
I think the most interesting team to watch this year
year is going to be the Arizona Cardinals and find
out exactly what do they look like. There's been a
lot of good mojo coming out with Kyler Murray and
what he may be doing or be able to put
on tape. And then with the addition of a Marvin
Harrison with I think with the explosion of Trey McBride
last year, I think the most interesting team will be
what Arizona does in twenty twenty four.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Can I give you mine?
Speaker 12 (29:20):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (29:21):
I think the Steelers are a mess on offense. I
think I think they took up they took a bunch
of parts that weren't great, and then they reconfigured them.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
Me Like, who I might that might be worse?
Speaker 3 (29:35):
You know, Like there are people that think Justin Fields
is going to be the answer, and I don't think
he is. I mean, thirty one other teams don't think so.
And then Russell Wilson like he's got the cap, he's
never healthy. I don't think he's very good. He wants
to hold the ball, they want to get rid of
it quickly. I just I don't love it in any way.
Speaker 12 (29:55):
You know, I understand. It's amazing what Mike Tomlinson was
able to do last year with Kenny I understand. I
hear what you're saying. You know, it's a it's a
hard team to bet against just because of their consistency.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Sure, and I think their defense is good.
Speaker 12 (30:11):
Are banked up too, you know, there's there's that whole
division might be you know, a lot more depending on
the quarterback play and to be able to keep the
quarterbacks healthy will be everything. But I agree with you
that if, if, if it's Justin Fields becomes the quarterback
for the Pittsburgh Steelers, those Steelers will be in the
draft next year drafting the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
Mark you're the best.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
I would like you to assume the position on the
couch tonight, as most of America will as well, and
then report back after a Saturday and a Sunday and
a Monday on the couch as well.
Speaker 12 (30:42):
Okay, it's great, right, we got a lot of good
football in front of us. We're happy day back in
the twenty twenty four seasons, so enjoy it too, Doug.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Thanks.
Speaker 10 (30:49):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
Stug Gottleib Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from
the Tyraq dot Com Studios every day. This time we
hand is it conch or kunk.
Speaker 11 (31:10):
Conch?
Speaker 2 (31:11):
Conch from Lord of Flies?
Speaker 3 (31:13):
We hold that we hand the conch over or if
you were a big remember the movie Crimson Tide. Sorry,
Dan Byer, I know you're not a movie guy, but.
Speaker 7 (31:21):
Really movie I've seen. That's the submarine.
Speaker 3 (31:23):
Yeah, Gene Hackmand, Denzel Washington, who's got the con? I've
got the con We hand the con over to Dan Byer.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
Game.
Speaker 10 (31:35):
This is Game Tide on the Doug Gottlie Gene.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
Hackman in the rain given the speech before they get
on the sub and then ends with a Gobama and
they go, tid that's it.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
I mean, it's cheesy, but it's cool.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
I haven't seen it in a long long time, but
I did see it. I can guarantee you that. All right,
the game today on this Friday is, all right, our
favorite Week one matchup of the NFL season. Yeah, what
game are you most looking forward to? I got DIBs
actually on tonight's game. I'll just say that right now.
Speaker 7 (32:14):
Yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
Actually like that it's on a neutral field. We're actually
gonna find out a lot about these teams, or we're
gonna find out nothing about these teams because they're playing
on a different continent. But I think that it's more
interesting than playing at Lambeau or playing in Philadelphia, because
if the home team won, maybe we wouldn't get a
real sense. But I am really excited for tonight's game.
(32:36):
I'm much more excited for tonight's game than I was
last night's game.
Speaker 7 (32:39):
The only thing exciting last night was that it was
the first one game. Yep.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
It's like, oh, Pat mahomes doing crazy stuff, like, yeah,
I kind of seen it, kind of kind of seen it.
I got DIBs on a game which is it's gonna
be hard for me to watch, to be honest with you,
not just because I don't think either team is great,
because it's good rivalry, but because I mean normally i'd
be there, right Chargers, Yes, Rat is right.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
I mean he doesn't want to see it.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Like if Jim Harbaugh can't fix the Chargers, no one
can fix the Chargers.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
That's that's it, right pretty near.
Speaker 7 (33:15):
Yes, Yes, I got DIBs.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
I got DIBs on Cowboys Browns, and it's it's not
for the reason you guys think, And it might even
not even jive with the uh with the sentiment of
your question, Dan, I'm going to tune into Cowboys Browns
because of Tom Brady.
Speaker 7 (33:32):
That's what I did think. Actually, that's what I thought
it was going to be.
Speaker 6 (33:35):
I really am looking forward to seeing how he does.
You guys all know I'm on record as being maybe
Tony Romo's most staunch what would you say, would you
say critic to beat to put it nicely, I want
to see the juxtaposition between him and Tom Brady. I
don't think Tom Brady's going to be the great announcer
that everyone kind of makes it out to be. So
(33:56):
I'm going to be very deciphering. I'm going to listen
with a with a professional ear so Cowboys Browns for
Tom Brady.
Speaker 8 (34:05):
I think I've got DIBs on Rams Lions, not just
because I'm a Lions guy, but that could be the
only reason.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Chris No, the former quarterback you know the GM, used
to work there, help build a team.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Like I'm with you, Cris, both teams.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
I do not believe you can give more than two
sports takes without one of the two involving Detroit.
Speaker 8 (34:26):
I can give plenty of those, but yeah, no, I
mean Sunday Football to kick it off. You've got two
quarterbacks on opposite teams and that's been you know, and
this is we're immediately flashing back to last year, to
the wildcard matchup where there was bad blood between these teams.
And the Rams already have their left tackle suspended, and
I think they just put another guy on injury report
who's not gonna be playing on their defense.
Speaker 11 (34:47):
This this will be interesting.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
Quick question just for Jason, how are you going to
listen to Tom Brady and listen to me and carry
Rhoades on Fox Sports Radio's Red Zone Radio at the
same time. You're going to be able to make that
work because we're on five eastern to eight eastern on Sunday.
Speaker 6 (35:03):
I usually record your show with my cassette tape perfect
and then I listened to it afterwards.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Thanks, it's going to be Tom Brady Live, all right, tweeting,
Thank you very much. All right, best part of week
one in the National Football League when football is back?
Speaker 7 (35:15):
What's your favorite part about it? All right?
Speaker 4 (35:18):
I got DIBs is just jumping in. I don't want
to be the first one every single time. You're fine,
I know, I know, I'm fine, but I'm telling all
you guys, like, let's have something freaking prepared. Okay, it's
week one, get your game face on.
Speaker 6 (35:31):
I have.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
I don't want I don't want.
Speaker 7 (35:34):
To cutting someone off. Let's do this, guys.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
That's that's your thing that you're you're most excited about
the season.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
No, I'm most excited seeing my fantasy score change. Like
it's because it's been eight or nine months, like to
the first moment when you're live scoring is like zero
point six to point zero. Like, just to see that
fantasy live scoring, I love it.
Speaker 6 (35:57):
I'm just gonna I had DIBs on something, fans.
Speaker 11 (36:00):
It's not necessarily that I have DIBs on.
Speaker 7 (36:03):
You know.
Speaker 6 (36:04):
I'm monitoring three different weeks. My favorite one is one
that Dan Bayer put on here at work. It's the
guillotine week. Oh man, different kind of leak. You're not
playing necessarily to beat up an opponent. You're playing to
not finish and last. And it's very fun to monitor that.
And we can make fun of co workers, which is
one of my one.
Speaker 8 (36:24):
We might have auto drafted very poorly. I chose U
perfets jamiir Gibbs. Yeah, so I got him thinking I
was getting sniped by everyone out of Lions player.
Speaker 11 (36:37):
It's not just you.
Speaker 8 (36:39):
I got DIBs on chicken wings, specials on chicken wings
back in season.
Speaker 11 (36:43):
Just the time for football, very very solid.
Speaker 3 (36:47):
That leads me with the whole kind of cornucopia thing. Yeah,
there's so many things I'm excited about and let's just
get down to it. I'm excited to see the Cowboys
ultimately lose when people think they I just I took
so much joy last year, not even know. When I
live in Green Bay. I remember sitting at a Buffalo
Wilwings watching that game, going this is the greatest thing ever.
(37:09):
My son Hayes is like, why are you smiling so much?
Like cause my show is written for the next week
and that's game Tach Stug Gottleib Show Here on Fox
Sports Radio. We have buried this segment for a while,
but it's back the Gambler. Get your singing voices ready
and listen to our picks next in The Doug Gotlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio,
